The current surge of interest in studies on intonation, in areas ranging from L2 teaching to child language acquisition, finally mirrors the crucial role played by intonation in the whole of human communication through language. In studies on non-native linguistic proficiency, a ‘foreign intonation’ appears as the last stronghold of a non-native accent, consisting in the use, in a second language, of intonation patterns belonging to the first language of the learner. The use of a foreign intonation does not, however, only characterise an accent. Intonation patterns convey specific meanings in each language, and the correspondence between these meanings and specific pitch patterns is often as arbitrary as the correspondence between words and their meanings. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to provide a basis for the comparison of the intonation patterns of (European) Portuguese and (British) English, highlighting potential areas of difficulty for speakers of each of these languages in learning the other, and the reasons for these difficulties. Second, to give support to the view, current in L2 studies, that the learning of L2 intonation cannot be taken for granted, if breakdown in native to non-native spoken communication is to be avoided.

This paper examines the language choices and the process of academic writing of a group of 35 Portuguese graduate students in the fields of humanities and social sciences with the aim of illustrating their language preferences, as well as the aspects they take into consideration while writing either in Portuguese or in English.Results of this study indicate that the participants prefer to write their papers in Portuguese, their first language, and that they use similar approaches when writing in both languages. However, findings also reveal they are concerned with slightly different process aspects when composing and revising their texts in Portuguese and in English. These differences seem to be associated with acquired discourse traditions in Portuguese language, as well as with the participants’ lower competence in English language writing.

Timor-Leste is a nation where three exogenous languages (Portuguese, Bahasa Indonesia, English) and one of many endogenous languages (Tetun) compete to be heard in public spaces. The constitution names both Tetun and Portuguese as co-official languages, and English and Bahasa Indonesia as working languages in the civil service; but official and de facto language policy are not necessarily the same. One mechanism that can mediate between ideology and practice, both as a way of imposing and of resisting official policy, is language in the public space. This paper demonstrates the insights that examining language in the public space can provide on language policy debates. It reports on the investigation of a linguistic landscape in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, and finds considerable difference between official language policy and language practices.

This study investigates how speakers who speak Brazilian Portuguese as their first language and English as their second language perceive the English phonemes /h/ and /ɹ/, and how they and monolingual Brazilian Portuguese speakers map these phonemes onto Portuguese sound categories. Participants took part in three experiments: an AXB discrimination test, an identification test, and a cross-language assimilation test, which was also taken by monolinguals. Lower and higher proficiency groups were able to hear the distinction acoustically, but only the higher proficiency group used the distinction to identify English words. Monolingual Brazilian Portuguese speakers and the higher proficiency group assimilated English /h/ primarily to Portuguese /h/. However, the phonological environment had an effect for monolinguals, but not for the higher proficiency group. The lower proficiency group, which one might expect to fall in between these two groups, showed a failure to assimilate English sounds to the Portuguese categories.

This article fits into the topic “PL2 / PLE / PLH teaching-learning experiences”. The (re)construction of the identities of the Luso-descendants and other participants of the Intensive Summer Course for Luso-descendants (CIVLD), before and after attendance of the course, was studied through surveys and interviews to record the respective Life stories. For this, two surveys were developed, one for the students to complete at the beginning of the course and the other one, in the last class of the same, and the identity reconstruction was taking place throughout the teaching-learning experience. Data were collected on their motivation for attending the course, their expectations of the course and their learning of the Portuguese language (LP), their views of Madeira and its culture, before and after the course, as well as difficulties, both in language and social integration. Of these Luso-descendants, those who have Portuguese as a Heritage Language express themselves with many phonetic, lexical and morphosyntactic interferences of the Spanish of Venezuela or the English of South Africa. The course also includes six Venezuelans (non-Lusodescendants), married with Luso-descendants from Madeira.

This paper aims at contributing to the description of Portuguese from the point of view of Systemic Functional Grammar, particularly in relation to the description of the clause as an exchange. While assuming that the interpersonal organization of the Portuguese clause involves phenomena that are similar across different languages, such as Mood systems, for instance, the paper wants nevertheless to show that there are systemic options (and their structural realizations) that are specific to Portuguese, particularly if compared to the same options in English, a language whose descriptions have so often and too strongly been imposed on Portuguese. Starting with a general description of some aspects of the Portuguese language, the paper then proceeds to a description of Mood types and the system of choices associated with them. By raising some questions and doubts concerning the description of the elements that in Portuguese carry the negotiation forward, the paper ends up proposing a description that sees Portuguese as a Finite-less language, that is, a language that does not have Finite, a function that proved to be appropriate for the description of the English language but fails to be so when considered from the point of view of Portuguese.

Crosslinguistic influence (CLI) refers to the phenomenon of how one language affects the acquisition and processing of another language by the same speaker. Bilinguals and multilinguals offer a good opportunity to study crosslinguistic phenomena since they have multiple language systems in interaction. Here we report the results of a study which investigated CLI in bilinguals and trilinguals. The objective of the study was twofold: (1) to analyze the influence of cognate words in the oral production of L2 and L3 English speakers in terms of quantity and type of cognates (English-Portuguese, English-German, English-German-Portuguese); (2) to investigate CLI in the production of English as L3. Participants were required to narrate a story on the basis of four pictures. The analysis of the narratives showed that bilinguals and trilinguals produced a similar number of cognate words of the type English- Portuguese and English- German- Portuguese. Regarding the cognate type English- German, trilinguals produced a significant higher number of these words as compared to the bilinguals. Since the bilinguals had no knowledge of German, these results indicate that the L2 (German) of the trilinguals facilitated the production of English-German cognates. We interpret these results as evidence of the coactivation of the trilinguals’ languages.

This paper reports on the research carried out by a Portuguese university in the scope of PESE – Professional English Language Skills for Employability Across EU project, which highlights the importance of appropriate English skills for the workplace. The present study focuses on the Portuguese labor market and identifies the English skills employers currently require from their employees based on the review of a job search website and the application of questionnaires to 22 Portuguese companies, as well as 6 experienced English trainers. The data collection is part of the project’s Handbook on the current Professional English requirements throughout partner countries, from which a framework for a curriculum can be established. The curriculum will then form the basis of an e-course on professional English skills targeted toward unemployed citizens in Europe.

This review article evaluates the intersection of the content of two recent anthologies in second language (L2) phonology. One of the books lays out both the methodological context and theoretical underpinnings of the field, whereas the other volume reports 11 empirical studies on the L2 acquisition of several aspects of pronunciation by adult learners of English whose native language is either Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese. The criteria applied for the evaluation lead to the conclusion that, for the most part, the studies are successful in presenting an interesting array of second-language pronunciation patterns, and that such an intersection of domains is a fruitful way to advance the field of interphonology.

Abstract The phenomenon of English ‘colonising’ academic publishing had been observed globally, so that English-speaking academics rarely need to venture into non-English texts in order to build new knowledge. In the case of research in the education and language fields in Timor-Leste, academic research and writing appears predominantly in Portuguese, with English as a significant second language of research. In this case, researchers need to engage across these dominant languages in order to draw on the accumulated research and knowledge about contexts where research is carried out. Not engaging with both these languages, and other local languages, risks building incomplete knowledge of the Timorese context. This paper presents the results of a citation analysis of academic research items written between 1999 and 2020. Findings indicate that working only within a particular language is frequent among researchers writing in either Portuguese or English, often ignoring research in the other dominant languages and in local languages. This study suggests that researchers within multilingual countries need to read widely, considering a range of languages and sources. It also suggests the ways in which technological tools might help alleviate some of the barriers to inter-language communication around research.

This study aims to contribute to the ongoing debate about the spread of English in Brazil. Brazilian Portuguese is the official and by far most spoken language in Brazil. In spite of being a multilingual country, several policies guided the country towards monolingualism. A bill has been recently proposed by the then congressman Aldo Rebelo, in 1999, and approved in 2007 that regards English as a threat to the Brazilian Po1tuguese language. Nonetheless, the bill has not yet been approved and still sits in the Senate's assembly due to strong opposition of the mainstream media, sociolinguists and marketing companies. English has spread quickly in Brazil, especially from the end of the 201h century to current days. According to several studies, the influence of English is specially noticed in brand naming, advertisements and people's names. Studies have also shown that English is also perceived as a prestigious language that attaches attributes of modernity, sophistication and connectivity with a globalized world to its speakers' identity. English is also the most studied foreign language in Brazilian schools. However, studies have shown that English teaching in Brazilian schools is perceived as weak and unsatisfactory mostly by students (Bernardo, 2007; Dias and Assis-Peterson, 2006), leading Brazilians to seek for English teaching in private English institutes. Another viable option for Brazilians has been the language programs to study English abroad. This study aims to understand how Brazilian Portuguese speakers who are studying English in Cape Town construct their language ideologies regarding English and Portuguese. The study uses two key concepts to guide the discussion, global Englishes and language ideologies. Overall, this study confirms findings of other studies, such as the perception of the participants towards Brazilian regular schools and English institutes. Moreover it contributes to the incipient literature concerning the perception of mobile students with regard to language programs to study English abroad. This study used a text to remind participants about the proposed bill by congressman Rebelo to elicit language ideologies around English and Portuguese. Most of the participants in this study positioned themselves as against the bill. Most of them claimed that language change is natural, and such attitude welcomes English borrowings which could be observed in the participants' interviews.

This study investigated the vocabulary abilities of bilingual Portuguese-English-speaking children compared to their monolingual peers. Parental Report Surveys were conducted using the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs), which are standardized norms for vocabulary assessment. Electronic versions of the “Words and Sentences CDI” in English and Brazilian-Portuguese were used in order to assess the vocabulary of children between the ages of 16 and 36 months. Parents answered the surveys online. Different vocabulary score types were used in order to evaluate the children’s lexicons: The Total Vocabulary score, the Conceptual Vocabulary scores, and the Total Modified Vocabulary. The analyses of the results showed that bilinguals had fewer words than the monolinguals in each language separately, but no significant differences between bilinguals and monolinguals when the two languages of the bilinguals were compared together to the monolinguals'. An analysis of cognates and translation equivalents showed that cognates help with the acquisition of words.

The process of reading in a second language is an under-studied area of research on second language processing. Researchers have found similarities and differences between first- and second-language reading (Koda, 2007; Artieda, 2017; Walter, 2007), and many believe that readers’ successful reading behaviors in their L1 reflect their reading patterns in the L2 (Yamashita, 2007; Cummings, 1991; Sparks & Ganschow, 1995). Others claim that a certain threshold level of L2 language proficiency is necessary before L1 reading ability transfers to L2 reading (Clark, 1978; Cummings, 1991). Eye tracking technology has enabled researchers to investigate early and late reading measures, the former associated with word recognition, and the latter with text integration (Rayner, 1998). However, research has not yet found much evidence for the effect of different proficiency levels in second-language reading behavior. This study builds from the aforementioned reading hypotheses and investigates whether multiple reading proficiency levels impacted reading behaviors of 37 Portuguese learners with native English backgrounds, with the use of eye-tracking technology. Participants read the same amount of passages in Portuguese (their L2), and in English (their L1), each of which ranged from Intermediate to Superior levels, and was followed by comprehension questions. Results indicate that, as expected, participants read faster in their first language and slower in their second language. Unexpectedly, proficiency level did not reveal significant effects on readers’ reading behaviors on their first or second languages.

This dissertation explores the potential differences in the acquisition of the sound system of a second language (L2) versus a third language (L3), building on recent research on adult L2 speech learning and testing the hypothesis that new category acquisition is available across the lifespan. On the one hand, recent influential theories of L2 speech learning predict that new sound categories will be difficult to acquire due to complex interactions among the phonetic categories residing in one same perceptual space. On the other, there exists the common assumption that the more sound categories one’s native language contains, the less difficult it will be to acquire new ones in a native-like fashion. My work provides additional evidence to this discussion, while providing speech data from the following five different speaker groups: (1) native speakers of American English; (2) native speakers of Mexican Spanish; (3) native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese; (4) native speakers of English learning Portuguese as their L2, and (5) native speakers of English learning Portuguese as their L3, who speak Spanish as their L2.The dissertation consists of three content chapters. The first of the content chapters describes the vowel systems of Mexican Spanish, American English and Brazilian Portuguese as informed by production data of the three native speaker groups above (1, 2 and 3). The second and third chapters describe and contrast the vowel system(s) of the two learner groups (4 and 5) as informed by their production and perception of Portuguese vowels respectively. The results from the analysis of the data from the various production and perception experiments performed as part of this dissertation provide evidence for (a) phonetic category assimilation and dissimilation processes in post-L1 speech learning and phonetic category interactions in general; (b) the relevance of quality and quantity of input in language learning; (c) the discussion on the relation between perception and production in post-L1 speech learning; and (d) the need for an extension of current models of L2 speech learning and cross-linguistic speech perception in order for these to address post-L2 speech learning processes, among other topics.

This thesis examines the difficulties that beginning and advanced American learners of Portuguese have correctly perceiving and producing the Portuguese mid-vowels {o} and {e}. The beginning learners were enrolled in their second semester of Portuguese and had rudimentary knowledge of Portuguese. The advanced learners had all lived in Brazil for nearly two years and were enrolled in a more advanced Portuguese course. To test for production, informants were asked to read a group of sentences that contained one hundred occurrences of the Portuguese mid-vowels. Each production occurrence was evaluated as being correct or incorrect by linguistically trained native Brazilians. To test for perception, informants were evaluated on their ability to distinguish between tokens (individual vowel sounds) spoken in context by native Brazilian speakers. These tokens used to test perception were recorded in a professional recording studio in Brazil. The study found that beginning and advanced learners had difficulty perceiving and correctly producing the Portuguese mid-vowels. In the perception study, beginners scored 70% on the {o} section and 68% on the {e} section, for a combined score of 69%. The advanced learners scored 78% on the {o} section and 78% on {e} section, for an average score of 78%. In the production study, the advanced learners scored an average of 42% on the open vowels and 84% on the closed vowels. The beginners scored 23% on the open vowels and 97% on the closed vowels. The most striking finding in the study was that advanced learners scored lower on the closed vowel production section than did the beginners. This was due to a hypercorrection phenomenon in the advanced learners. The advanced learners, once they learned that open vowels exist in Portuguese, seemed to produce them sporadically in their speech. They tended to open many vowels that should have been closed. Beginners, however, rarely used any open vowels in their speech. Beginners showed a strong correlation between perception and production capabilities. This chapter investigates R. John Andree’s A vocabulary, in six languages (London, 1725). This work was not conceived solely as a reference tool but with a pedagogical purpose as well; it was based on a comparative method to ease English native speakers’ acquisition of vocabulary in four living Romance languages (Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese) by showing their etymological similarity to their Latin ancestor – the fifth language in the Vocabulary – and between them, with English as the language of the entry words. Indeed, by viewing and memorizing Latin and Romance words together, the learner was expected to acquire them more easily. This chapter focuses on the dictionary, its method and the author’s language learning ideas and concludes with considerations relating to its contribution to innovation in language learning and teaching.

AbstractThis chapter delves into the project’s evolution after the successful publication of books on the Escazú Agreement in English and Portuguese. The initiative shifted focus towards disseminating the knowledge contained in these works to the Chiquitano communities in Mato Grosso and sharing project results in academic fora and international conferences. The reception of these books was enthusiastic among both indigenous and scientific communities, garnering positive feedback. One notable suggestion emerged prominently: the urgent need to develop a Spanish version. This recommendation was driven by the widespread prevalence of Spanish as a major language in Latin American and Caribbean countries, including Bolivia, where the majority of Chiquitano communities reside. Therefore, this chapter explores the process of expanding the initiative to include a Spanish version, emphasizing its significance and implications for promoting indigenous rights and environmental protection. Adapting the project to this crucial language aims to ensure broader and more effective access to information about the Escazú Agreement, thereby strengthening indigenous community participation and fostering environmental protection in the region.

The Winograd Schema Challenge has become a common benchmark for question answering and natural language processing. The original set of Winograd Schemas was created in English; in order to stimulate the development of Natural Language Processing in Portuguese, we have developed a set of Winograd Schemas in Portuguese. We have also adapted solutions proposed for the English-based version of the challenge so as to have an initial baseline for its Portuguese-based version; to do so, we created a language model for Portuguese based on a set of Wikipedia documents.

The opinion issued by consumers of products and services has become increasingly valued, both by other consumers and by companies. The automatic interpretation of review texts to generate information is of paramount importance. With opinion mining at the aspect level, it is possible to extract and summarize opinions about different components of a product or service. This paper evaluates the behavior of a method for extracting aspects using natural language processing tools for the Portuguese language. The aim is to investigate the maturity of the tools for Portuguese compared to the already consolidated tools for the English language. The evaluation was carried out in three datasets from two different domains with original texts in Portuguese and their translations into English, and vice versa, and the results indicate that there is no difference between languages.

Resumo:
Combining human expertise with book-consumers data may generate what is needed to sustain constant changes experienced in the book publishing market. Then, building and making available datasets that entirely comprise the essential elements of the book industry ecosystem is essential. However, little has been done in such a context for non-English languages, such as Portuguese. Hence, we introduce PPORTAL, a public domain Portuguese-language literature dataset composed of books-related metadata. After an overview of its building process and content, we discuss a brief exploratory data analysis to summarize its main characteristics. We also highlight potential applications, showing how PPORTAL is useful as a resource on different research domains.

Advances in Natural Language Processing have generated new models that push forward the state of the art. This reached new heights in complex tasks in handling unstructured texts. Most of the new architectures and models focus on the English language. There is a lack of available datasets that can be used during the training of new models. This investigation presents four new textual datasets for language modeling in Brazilian Portuguese. Our datasets were generated from several specific methodologies that aimed to obtain data of different natures. Two of our sets were originally built from data in online web forums. We also distribute a translated version of MultiWOZ, and a clean version of BrWaC. The original datasets are made available in a structured way to facilitate their use during the training of NLP models, with questions, answers and conversations already identified.

Textual production is a key activity at different levels of education. The analysis of essays encompasses several criteria, such as lexical and syntactic errors, cohesion, and coherence. Within these criteria, how the students include punctuation (i.e., final mark and comma) could influence the quality of the final production. Thus, the literature has proposed several approaches to verifying punctuation correction in students’ essays for English. However, despite the advancements in natural language processing models for other languages, there is a significant gap concerning punctuation verification. Therefore, this paper proposed a new approach based on state-of-the-art language models to develop a punctuation prediction method for Portuguese. The proposed model was applied to evaluate the textual productions of students in Brazilian public schools. Finally, the results of this study and its practical implications for educational settings are further discussed.

Automatic Text Classification represents a great improvement in law area workflow, mainly in the migration of physical to electronic lawsuits. A systematic review of studies on text classification in law area from January 2017 up to February 2020 was conducted. The search strategy identified 20 studies, that were analyzed and compared. The review investigates from research questions: what are the state-of-art language models, its application of text classification in English and Brazilian Portuguese datasets from legal area, if there are available language models trained on Brazilian Portuguese, and datasets in Brazilian law area. It concludes that there are applications of automatic text classification in Brazil, although there is a gap on the use of language models when compared with English language dataset studies, also the importance of language model in domain pre-training to improve results, as well as there are two studies making available Brazilian Portuguese language models, and one introducing a dataset in Brazilian law area.

Context: With the largest number of bilingual individuals in the world, there is a growing need for understanding and studying language in different populations. In cases of bilingual aphasia, patterns of language recovery can vary. Parallel, or simultaneous, recovery in both languages is the most common type of language recovery, followed by differential recovery, where there is an improvement in one language compared to another. This case report was approved by the Ethics Committee of Universidade Metropolitana de Santos. Case Report: The present case refers to a male patient, 52 years old, righthanded, born in Arkansas-United States of America and resident for 20 years in the city of Santos, São Paulo. The patient is bilingual fluent in English and Portuguese and had a sudden deficit in strength and sensitivity in the right hemibody, associated with language disorders. Imaging exams showed a hemorrhagic lesion in the topography of the left lenticular nucleus. In the neurological evaluation, hemiparesis and proportioned and complete hemiparesis were shown on the right. In the language assessment, he presented an important impairment of fluency, compression and repetition in the Portuguese language and relative preservation, with slight dysfunction in fluency in the English language. Conclusions: Symptomatic treatment was instituted and after 12 months he had partial improvement of motor symptoms and complete aphasia.

Currently, keyboards are the most common means of communicating with computers. Despite being the most commonly used keyboard layout, QWERTY has had various issues raised concerning its effectiveness, as it is not efficient in English (target language) or in fact other languages. Therefore, this paper presents the development process of a Genetic Algorithm with the intention of generating a more adequate and coherent layout proposal for Brazilian Portuguese, which has its focus on ergonomics and user productivity. Using five ergonomic criteria and a statistical analysis of the characters and sequences of most frequently used pairs in Brazilian Portuguese, a layout approximately 53% better than QWERTY was obtained.

Eligibility criteria: s inclusion criteria it was established that only original peer-reviewed articles would be included, whose: 1) object of study are active workers; 2) concept of family-work relationship under study is effectively the work-family balance (and not only the absence of work-family conflict); 3) language used is English, Spanish and Portuguese. Review question / Objective: Identify and synthesize the most significant literature addressing talent identification and development in futsal. Condition being studied: Talent identification and development constraints associated to: (1) the athlete; (2) the environment; (3) the task. Eligibility criteria: The publications included in the first search round met the following criteria: (1) contained relevant data concerning talent identification and/or development; (2) were performed on male futsal players; (3) were empirical studies, and; (4) were written in the English, Spanish and Portuguese language. Studies were excluded if they: (1) included practitioners from other sports; (2) did not contain any relevant data on talent development and/or identification, and; (3) were reviews or conference proceedings.

The objective of the study is to outline the vision of the Russian-Ukrainian war in Renmin Ribao, the main newspaper of the People’s Republic of China. The source base of the research is the content of the Renmin Ribao website during 2022 in English, Spanish, French, Russian, German, Italian, and Portuguese languages. The material was selected using the keywords «Ukraine», «Russia» (and other derivatives), analyzed using induction, vocabulary analysis, classification analysis, and content analysis. Renmin Ribao rarely uses the term “war” to refer to events in Ukraine, resorting to streamlined formulations such as “situation”, “issue”, “crisis”, “conflict” and even “Russian military operation”. The newspaper sees the United States, not Russia, as responsible for the events in Ukraine. Rather, Moscow is a victim of many years of intrigues on the part of the United States, which manifested itself in efforts to restrain and weaken Russia, in particular with the help of Ukraine. The newspaper often reproduces Russian narratives and Russian fakes, disseminates messages typical of Russian propaganda (for example, about biological laboratories in Ukraine), reports on referendums in the occupied Ukrainian territories from the evidence of the Russian RT television channel, about the annexation of four Ukrainian regions from the testimony of Chairman State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin, about the attack on the Crimean bridge from the evidence of the FSB. Renmin Ribao is inclined to the opinion of the harmfulness of anti-Russian sanctions and the impracticality of supplying weapons to Ukraine, sees a priority way out of the Russian-Ukrainian war in an abstract “peace”, and not the victory of Ukraine. The issue in which Renmin Ribao sharply diverges from the position of official Moscow is the identification of the situation in Ukraine and the situation in Taiwan. Drawing parallels between Taiwan and Ukraine is popular in both the Russian and the Western press. However, when the war began to look less and less victorious for Russia, these parallels became unacceptable to both Renmin Ribao and official Beijing. A novelty is that all of them are also available in English language (Portuguese versions are also available on page 101). We remind you that the reviews are written in an abbreviated and concise way to summarize the content of the books (on subjects related to the various sciences involving acoustics, vibrations, and audio) and to bring information about the authors (to further contextualize the works). Brennan | Wiley, 2022 Eric Brandão, professor of the Acoustical Engineering Program (EAC) at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM, Brazil), presents his book on Room Acoustics (a subject he teaches in the program) — the book was technically revised by William D’Andrea Fonseca (who is an EAC professor as well). The work won the Jabuti Prize (2017) and is in its first revised edition. Next, we have a classic, “Array Signal Processing”, by American professors Don H. Johnson and Dan E. Dudgeon, a must-read for studies on the subject that deal with mechanical or electromagnetic waves. The third book is authored by Jorge Patrício (professor in Portugal), who is a reference in Building Acoustics. Finally, we have the book “Virtual Experiments in Mechanical Vibrations: Structural Dynamics and Signal Processing”, by Bin Tang and Michael J. Brennan, who write the review of their own book (an international collaboration). We hope that reading the reviews offers an initial understanding and good impression about the studies and awakens the desire to know them in their entirety: an excellent way to expand knowledge and keep up to date in the field.
