Objective: Management of the distal ureter during radical nephroureterectomy remains a controversial issue. This article describes a simple endoscopic PolyLoop ligation technique for managing the distal ureter during radical nephroureterectomy. Technique: This endoscopic technique was used in 6 cases to manage the distal ureter during laparoscopic-assisted radical nephroureterectomy. The distal ureter with en bloc bladder cuff was managed endoscopically. The distal ureteric orifice with 1 cm bladder cuff was circumscribed using a Collins knife. Commercially available, Olympus detachable PolyLoop was used to ligate the ureteric stump to avoid urine spillage from the upper tract. Once ureteric stump was ligated with a PolyLoop, the distal ureter was mobilized by dividing the periureteric adhesions using a Collins knife. Results: Distal ureter was managed successfully in all 6 cases using commercially available detachable Polyloop from Olympus. There were no perioperative complications relating to this technique. Conclusion: The PolyLoop ligation technique offers a simple and safer alternative to manage the distal ureter during radical nephroureterectomy.

AbstractClustering is a fundamental tool for analyzing large data sets. A rich body of work has been devoted to designing data-stream algorithms for the relevant optimization problems such as k-center, k-median, and k-means. Such algorithms need to be both time and and space efficient. In this paper, we address the problem of correlation clustering in the dynamic data stream model. The stream consists of updates to the edge weights of a graph on n nodes and the goal is to find a node-partition such that the end-points of negative-weight edges are typically in different clusters whereas the end-points of positive-weight edges are typically in the same cluster. We present polynomial-time, $$O(n\cdot {{\,\mathrm{polylog}\,}}n)$$ O ( n · polylog n ) -space approximation algorithms for natural problems that arise. We first develop data structures based on linear sketches that allow the “quality” of a given node-partition to be measured. We then combine these data structures with convex programming and sampling techniques to solve the relevant approximation problem. Unfortunately, the standard LP and SDP formulations are not obviously solvable in $$O(n\cdot {{\,\mathrm{polylog}\,}}n)$$ O ( n · polylog n ) -space. Our work presents space-efficient algorithms for the convex programming required, as well as approaches to reduce the adaptivity of the sampling.

Factorization machine (FM) is a popular machine learning model to capture the second order feature interactions. The optimal learning guarantee of FM and its generalized version is not yet developed. For a rank k generalized FM of d dimensional input, the previous best known sampling complexity is O[k3d · polylog(kd)] under Gaussian distribution. This bound is sub-optimal comparing to the information theoretical lower bound O(kd). In this work, we aim to tighten this bound towards optimal and generalize the analysis to sub-gaussian distribution. We prove that when the input data satisfies the so-called τ-Moment Invertible Property, the sampling complexity of generalized FM can be improved to O[k2d · polylog(kd)/τ2]. When the second order self-interaction terms are excluded in the generalized FM, the bound can be improved to the optimal O[kd · polylog(kd)] up to the logarithmic factors. Our analysis also suggests that the positive semi-definite constraint in the conventional FM is redundant as it does not improve the sampling complexity while making the model difficult to optimize. We evaluate our improved FM model in real-time high precision GPS signal calibration task to validate its superiority.

Resumo:
An investigation into a family of definite integrals containing log-polylog functions will be undertaken in this paper. It will be shown that Euler sums play an important part in the solution of these integrals and may be represented as a BBP-type formula. In a special case we prove that the corresponding log integral can be represented as a linear combination of the product of zeta functions and the Dirichlet beta function.

Quantum computers have provided exponentially faster solutions to several physical and engineering problems over existing classical solutions. In this paper we present two quantum algorithms to analyze the forced vibration of a mechanical system with cyclic symmetry. Our main algorithm solves the equation of motion of an undamped and nonelastic rotating system with cyclic symmetry consisting of n sectors, by encoding the displacements of each sector at time t in a quantum state. The runtime of this algorithm is polylog in both n and t, thus exponentially faster than the analogous classical algorithm. Also we consider damped and elastic systems with cyclic symmetry and present another quantum algorithm to solve it in runtime polylog in n and polynomial in t.

Dieser Beitrag bietet auf erfahrungsbasierter Grundlage eine Einschätzung dazu an, inwiefern sich Partizipative Konfliktforschung vor dem genannten Hintergrund als besonders geeignet für die Erforschung von Konfliktbearbeitung erweist. Er beruht auf Erfahrungen aus der Pilotphase des Projekts »Kommunale Konfliktberatung und Partizipative Konfliktforschung« (KomPa). Skizziert werden der Forschungskontext und zentrale Begriffe, bevor in einem polylogischen Gesprächsformat die Beteiligten des Forschungsprojektes in einen Austausch über ihre gewonnenen Einsichten und Erkenntnisse treten.

AbstractThe phenomenological conception of “life-world” lays the theoretical foundation for the openness of the world. The founding relationship between the individual and the world, the interactive relationship among different cultural worlds on the intersubjective level, the free nature of truth and its presence in the open world, the “ek-sistent” characteristics of the human-being, the structural constitution of the life-world – all these topics demonstrate the open nature of the world in a phenomenological way. Based on these ideas, “reflective judgment” as “phronesis” and “fear” as ethic sentiment based on family experience become the practical stance, which is consistent with the “life-world” conception of phenomenology; the characteristics of publicness and intersubjectivity of the open world are thus maintained. In the face of the multicultural world, this attitude presents as a brand-new practice of intercultural philosophy, which is different from the centralism found under the framework of monism and the comparative philosophy under the framework of dualism. Such a practice of intercultural philosophy is “polylog”, i.e. based on the principles of difference and equality and searching for the “overlapping consensus” in full multi-participatory discussion. Through polylog, a harmonious life of human community is constructed. This paper attempts to derive a set of practical principles for maintaining the openness of the world and intercultural polylog in the era of globalization from the theoretical view of the phenomenological life-world.

In this note, we shall study the Witten multiple zeta function associated with the exceptional Lie algebra 𝔤2. Our main result shows that its special values at nonnegative integers can always be expressed as rational linear combinations of the multi-polylogs evaluated at 12th roots of unity, except for two irregular cases.

We study how parallelism can speed up quantum simulation. A parallel quantum algorithm is proposed for simulating the dynamics of a large class of Hamiltonians with good sparse structures, called uniform-structured Hamiltonians, including various Hamiltonians of practical interest like local Hamiltonians and Pauli sums. Given the oracle access to the target sparse Hamiltonian, in both query and gate complexity, the running time of our parallel quantum simulation algorithm measured by the quantum circuit depth has a doubly (poly-)logarithmic dependence polylog⁡log⁡(1/ϵ) on the simulation precision ϵ. This presents an exponential improvement over the dependence polylog⁡(1/ϵ) of previous optimal sparse Hamiltonian simulation algorithm without parallelism. To obtain this result, we introduce a novel notion of parallel quantum walk, based on Childs' quantum walk. The target evolution unitary is approximated by a truncated Taylor series, which is obtained by combining these quantum walks in a parallel way. A lower bound Ω(log⁡log⁡(1/ϵ)) is established, showing that the ϵ-dependence of the gate depth achieved in this work cannot be significantly improved.Our algorithm is applied to simulating three physical models: the Heisenberg model, the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and a quantum chemistry model in second quantization. By explicitly calculating the gate complexity for implementing the oracles, we show that on all these models, the total gate depth of our algorithm has a polylog⁡log⁡(1/ϵ) dependence in the parallel setting.

We construct a 1-round delegation scheme (i.e., argument-system) for every language computable in time t = t ( n ), where the running time of the prover is poly ( t ) and the running time of the verifier is n · polylog ( t ). In particular, for every language in P we obtain a delegation scheme with almost linear time verification. Our construction relies on the existence of a computational sub-exponentially secure private information retrieval ( PIR ) scheme. The proof exploits a curious connection between the problem of computation delegation and the model of multi-prover interactive proofs that are sound against no-signaling (cheating) strategies , a model that was studied in the context of multi-prover interactive proofs with provers that share quantum entanglement, and is motivated by the physical principle that information cannot travel faster than light. For any language computable in time t = t ( n ), we construct a multi-prover interactive proof ( MIP ), that is, sound against no-signaling strategies, where the running time of the provers is poly ( t ), the number of provers is polylog ( t ), and the running time of the verifier is n · polylog ( t ). In particular, this shows that the class of languages that have polynomial-time MIP s that are sound against no-signaling strategies, is exactly EXP . Previously, this class was only known to contain PSPACE . To convert our MIP into a 1-round delegation scheme, we use the method suggested by Aiello et al. (ICALP, 2000), which makes use of a PIR scheme. This method lacked a proof of security. We prove that this method is secure assuming the underlying MIP is secure against no-signaling provers.

Histogram indexing , also known as jumbled pattern indexing and permutation indexing is one of the important current open problems in pattern matching. It was introduced about 6 years ago and has seen active research since. Yet, to date there is no algorithm that can preprocess a text T in time o (| T | 2 /polylog| T |) and achieve histogram indexing, even over a binary alphabet, in time independent of the text length. The pattern matching version of this problem has a simple linear-time solution. Block-mass pattern matching problem is a recently introduced problem, motivated by issues in mass-spectrometry. It is also an example of a pattern matching problem that has an efficient, almost linear-time solution but whose indexing version is daunting. However, for fixed finite alphabets, there has been progress made. In this paper, a strong connection between the histogram indexing problem and the block-mass pattern indexing problem is shown. The reduction we show between the two problems is amazingly simple. Its value lies in recognizing the connection between these two apparently disparate problems, rather than the complexity of the reduction. In addition, we show that for both these problems, even over unbounded alphabets, there are algorithms that preprocess a text T in time o (| T | 2 /polylog| T |) and enable answering indexing queries in time polynomial in the query length. The contributions of this paper are twofold: (i) we introduce the idea of allowing a trade-off between the preprocessing time and query time of various indexing problems that have been stumbling blocks in the literature. (ii) We take the first step in introducing a class of indexing problems that, we believe, cannot be pre-processed in time o (| T | 2 /polylog| T |) and enable linear-time query processing.

This paper gives a QMA (Quantum Merlin-Arthur) protocol for 3-SAT with two logarithmic-size quantum proofs (that are not entangled with each other) such that the gap between the completeness and the soundness is $\Omega(\frac{1}{n\polylog{n}})$. This improves the best completeness/soundness gaps known for NP-complete problems in this setting.

While it is known that the threshold probability of the appearance of a loose Hamilton cycle inHkn,pis$p=\Theta\biggl(\frac{\log n}{n^{k-1}}\biggr),$the best known bounds for the packing problem are aroundp= polylog(n)/n. Here we make substantial progress and prove the following asymptotically (up to a polylog(n) factor) best possible result: forp≥ logCn/nk−1, a randomk-uniform hypergraphHkn,pwith high probability contains$N:=(1-o(1))\frac{\binom{n}{k}p}{n/(k-1)}$edge-disjoint loose Hamilton cycles.Our proof utilizes and modifies the idea of ‘online sprinkling’ recently introduced by Vu and the first author.

Resumo:
The article continues the research of the principles of museum design, which was devoted to such phenomenon as “protomuseum – immersion – spectator” and the visual nature of immersiveness and the spatial and sensory experience of its living. At this stage, attention is paid to the following typology of museumified environments: museum-at-the-crossroads (Modern times/ museum-theater, museum without walls, virtual museum, etc.) through the transition from “museum – techno-immersiveness – spectator” to “postmuseum – immersiveness – non-spectator”. The evolution of digital surfing and the construction of interactive strategies, the conflict of technological immersiveness and the cognitive properties of the viewer’s psyche are considered: what happens to him inside and outside the digital environment? Particular attention is paid to the narrative immersiveness and the role of the museum in the implementation of new “ritual” and “game” practices that can compete with the philosophy of downshifting in an attempt to get out of digital reality, return to the viewer the most important sense of “proprioception” and presence in the moment.
