Wireless communication systems have grown rapidly, moving towards being highly compact, intelligent, and flexible to adapt to changing operating requirements. Multifunctional and highly versatile antennas are key in this development to ensure system quality. Reconfigurable antennas, particularly regarding polarization, allow frequency reuse and enable the mitigation of fading effects. This work presents a square microstrip patch antenna operating in the ISM 5.8 GHz band with reconfigurable polarization by controlling its feeding. This antenna has four different states through the application of a symmetrical DC voltage that controls an RF circuit with PIN diodes. As a result, the microstrip patch can operate with three different polarizations: linear polarization and both circular polarizations (right-handed and left-handed). The antenna was fabricated to validate the proposed concept. The good agreement between the measurement and the simulation results was possible to observe regarding its polarization behaviour, impedance adaptation and radiation pattern.

This paper presented a new circular polarization reconfigurable antenna for 5G wireless communications. The antenna, containing a semicircular slot, was compact in size and had a good axial ratio and frequency response. Two PIN diode switches controlled the reconfiguration for both the right-hand and left-hand circular polarization. Reconfigurable orthogonal polarizations were achieved by changing the states of the two PIN diode switches, and the reflection coefficient |S11| was maintained, which is a strong benefit of this design. The proposed polarization-reconfigurable antenna was modeled using the Computer Simulation Technology (CST) software. It had a 3.4 GHz resonance frequency in both states of reconfiguration, with a good axial ratio below 1.8 dB, and good gain of 4.8 dBic for both modes of operation. The proposed microstrip antenna was fabricated on an FR-4 substrate with a loss tangent of 0.02, and relative dielectric constant of 4.3. The radiating layer had a maximum size of 18.3 × 18.3 mm2, with 50 Ω coaxial probe feeding.

In recent years, significant advances have been made in diversifying the capabilities of communication systems by using reconfigurable antennas. There are many types of reconfigurable antennas—to achieve pattern, frequency, or polarization reconfigurability. These antennas are reconfigured either by the mechanical rotation of surfaces or by enabling or disabling specific sections of the structure using electrical switches. This paper focuses on the concept of a polarization reconfigurable antenna based on an active reflector-backed metasurface. An antenna system based on an active reflector-backed metasurface combined with a planar dipole is designed to achieve reconfigurable polarization. The polarization of the designed antenna can be switched between linear and circular polarization states using positive-intrinsic-negative diodes located in the unit cell elements of the metasurface. The measured results correlate well with the simulated results. The antenna has a physical size of 308 × 162 × 35 mm3 with an impedance bandwidth of 4.5% in the linear state and 7% in the circular state, as well as an axial ratio bandwidth larger than 8.3%.

A wideband polarization-reconfigurable microstrip antenna based on a mode-fusion mechanism is proposed. This simple antenna structure consists of a rectangular radiation patch and a ground, both with crossed slots. The slots crossing the ground are connected by eight PIN diodes and four capacitors such that two orthogonal linear-polarization radiation modes can be realized. The radiation patch is slotted such that a transformed TM20 mode is excited, realizing broadside radiation that the traditional TM20 mode is unable to. With fusion of the fundamental TM10 mode and the transformed-TM20 (T-TM20) mode, a wide bandwidth of 30.1% is achieved in two reconfigurable polarizations. The measured results agree well with the simulation results. The total efficiency of the proposed antenna is more than 80.0% over the bandwidth.

In this paper, on the basis of multifunctional reconfigurable pixel antenna (RPA) elements, a novel linear sparse array with an attractive compound reconfigurability is presented. It has the potential advantages of its beam scanning with low gain fluctuation, low sidelobe in two orthogonal planes, and polarization reconfigurable performance. Specifically, an RPA with simultaneous polarization and pattern reconstruction capabilities, consisting of the driven patch and the parasitic pixels on the same layer of dielectric substrate, is firstly designed, which can work in several operation modes corresponding to steerable beam directions θ=0°;θxoz=25°, 45°;θyoz=15° with two circular polarizations in X-band. Cross-slot coupling feed is used to improve polarization reconstruction capability and reduce the complexity of hybrid reconstruction topology optimization. Then, those RPAs are integrated into the 1×8 linear sparse array to realize the reconfiguration of two circular polarizations and beam steering in xoz- and yoz-plane. Simulation results show that the gain fluctuation and sidelobe level of the array during beam scanning have significant advantages over the previous phased array, and the generation of antenna grating lobes is avoided. Moreover, both RPA element and RPA array prototypes have been fabricated and measured to testify the efficiency. The measured results agree well with the simulated ones, which indicates the application potential in the field of modern wireless communication system of the proposed linear sparse array.

Abstract A novel dual-band rectangular slot antenna is presented for dual-sense reconfigurable polarization. A W-shaped microstrip feedline and two rectangular parasitic patches are used to obtain dual-band circular polarization. Further, the feedline is modified so that the senses of polarization at the two bands are opposite. By introducing PIN-diodes in the feed lines, polarization can be switched among left-hand circular polarization (LHCP), right-hand circular polarization (RHCP), and linear polarization (LP). A prototype dual-band dual-sense antenna with f01 = 1.9 GHz and f02 = 3.45 GHz is fabricated in a 1.6 mm thick FR4 substrate. The measured circular polarized bandwidths are more than 7.6 % for the lower band and 5 % for the upper band.

Time-domain characterization of a microstrip patch antenna with circular corner truncation to achieve polarization reconfigurability is presented. By applying zero bias, forward bias, and reverse bias to the four PIN diodes, the antenna can radiate with linear polarization (LP), right hand circular polarization (RHCP), and left hand circular polarization (LHCP). The circular cuts reduce centre-frequency shift from linear to circularly polarized states, compared with conventional straight cuts. Time-domain simulation and measurement are carried out to show the switching characteristics of the proposed antenna, and it is established that satisfactory switching speed can be obtained using a simple low-cost driver circuit.

With the increase in wireless applications, there is a need for compact antennas that adapt their behavior with changing system requirements or environmental conditions. Here adapt implies the antenna should be able to alter operating frequencies, impedance bandwidths, polarizations, radiation patterns. These all features are provided by the “Reconfigurable antenna”. The important feature of reconfigurable antenna is that, they provide the same throughput as a multi-antenna system. A compact frequency reconfigurable antenna is designed with the aid of Ansoft HFSS that provides multiple frequency bands. This is achieved by using electrical switches such as PIN diodes. Depending on state of switches different operating frequencies are obtained. The switches placed on the antenna elements are powered wirelessly by the antenna itself. The design, geometries and simulation results of a frequency reconfigurable antenna are presented in this report. Further advancements are to be done for this structure to achieve polarization and radiation pattern re-configurability.

AbstractThis research proposes a novel circularly polarized (CP) reconfigurable microstrip loop antenna for 2.4–2.5 GHz advanced wireless communication using two parasitic patches and two PIN diodes. The reconfigurable antenna can alternate between right hand circular polarization (RHCP) and left hand circular polarization (LHCP) at the main beam by manipulating the ON/OFF status of the PIN diodes. Simulations were carried out for the optimal antenna parameters, and an antenna prototype was fabricated and experiments were undertaken. The simulation and measured results are in good agreement. The antenna achieves an impedance bandwidth of 2.4–2.5 GHz and unidirectional radiation pattern with a maximum gain of 5 dBic and 3-dB axial ratio for both RHCP and LHCP. As a result, the proposed reconfigurable antenna could be utilized to improve wireless communication performance. In essence, the novelty of this research lies in the utilization of parasitic patches and shorted PIN diodes to transform linear to circular polarization; and the reconfigurability of polarization between RHCP and LHCP.

This paper proposes a reconfigurable microstrip patch antenna design for wireless ISM band applications. The antenna simultaneously uses PIN Diodes to switch between linear and circular polarization at 2.45 GHz and uses Varactor Diode to continuously tune the operating frequency from 1.73 GHz to 2.45 GHz. The antenna performance is characterized as a combination of ON/OFF state of PIN Diode and a bias voltage of Varactor Diode varying from 0.8V to 10V. A good agreement between simulation and measurement is obtained which validates the proposed method. The proposed frequency/polarization reconfigurable antenna is promising for various applications in wireless ISM band such as DCS (1710 – 1880 MHz), PCS (1850 – 1990 MHz), GSM 1800, GSM 1900, UMTS (1920 – 2170 MHz) and WiFi/Bluetooth (2.4 – 2.5 GHz).

In this paper, a coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed dual-band uniplanar tri-polarization reconfigurable antenna based on the PIN diode switch is proposed. The proposed antenna can be reconfigured between the linear polarization (LP) and the circular polarization (CP) mode, including both the right-handed circular polarization and left-handed circular polarization simultaneously within the dual operating bands. The central frequencies of the bands are 2.63 and 4.42 GHz, respectively, and the overlapped operating bandwidth is 17.8 and 3.40%. The proposed reconfigurable antenna is a closed-slot antenna fed by the CPW transmission line and the reconfigurable mechanism is to regulate the T-shaped driven stub through switching the PIN diodes on and off. The scattering parameters, axial ratio, radiation pattern, gain, and the radiation efficiency of the proposed antenna are all investigated in the following. The optimized antenna has been fabricated to experimental test, the simulated and the measured results agree well with each other. The lower frequency band of the proposed antenna covers the 2.40 GHz WLAN specification and the upper band can be used for the 5 G communication (4.40–4.50 GHz); therefore it is suitable to be applied in the mobile wireless communication.

A dual-polarized continuous transverse stub (CTS) K-band antenna with reconfigurable four beams and low profile is proposed based on substrate-integrated-waveguide (SIW) design. It consists of a line source generator (LSG) on the bottom surface, a spherical-wave to plane-wave transforming part on the middle layer, and CTS radiators on the top surface. Particularly, the LSG has four SIW-based H-plane horns, and a chip is integrated to switch among the two pairs of horns, so as to transfer the quasi-TEM waves on the bottom surface by a ±10° deflection angle to the middle layer for the CTS radiators on the top surface, resulting in four reconfigurable scanning beams with 10° for two polarizations. The measurements show that it realizes four reconfigurable beams with a 25.8 dBi gain at 24 GHz, verifying the design. The proposed antenna takes into account the advantages of reconfigurable multi-beam, dual polarization, low side lobes, low profile, and high gain, which can be applied to K-band sensing, especially for wind profile radars.

To meet the demands of maritime transportation on ships, including satellite positioning, wireless communication, and radio frequency identification (RFID) for cargo handling management, a function reconfigurable antenna based on liquid metal is proposed in this paper. The antenna is composed of 3-D-printed hollow cavities, a two-step impedance feeding sheet, and two feeding probes. The 3-D-printed hollow cavities contain a big hollow helix cavity, a hollow cone loaded cylinder cavity, four hollow cylinder cavities, and four small hollow helix cavities. By filling the liquid metal into different hollow cavities, reconfigurable functions are generated, including right-handed circular polarization (RHCP), omnidirectional linear polarization (O-LP), pattern reconfigurable circular polarization, and omnidirectional left-handed circular polarization (O-LHCP). To illustrate this, a prototype is fabricated using 3-D-printed photopolymer resin and etching technology. The measurement results agree well with the simulated ones in terms of return loss, radiation pattern, gain, and axial ratio (AR). For the five reconfigurable states, the measured relative bandwidths for |S11| < −10 dB are 44.7%, 41.7%, 30.4%, 28.1%, and 10.8%, respectively, which covers the bands of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS), wireless communication system, and RFID communication system. Attributing to the advantages of its compact structure, flexible conversion, and good performance, the proposed antenna is a good candidate for maritime transportation applications.

The CP reconfigurable antenna is divided into three layers, composed of an annular radiating patch, ring slot, and reconfigurable orthogonal network (RON). The designed antenna is fed by dual vertical branches at the output port of the RON. By adjusting the bias voltage of the PIN switch loaded on the reconfigurable orthogonal network, the output phase can be changed, which means that the polarization direction of CP antenna is switchable. Simulation results show that the proposed feeding network provides constant phase difference and lower insertion loss for both states in the operating frequency band, thereby achieving good match and axial ratio characteristics either LHCP or RHCP state. Measured results show that the proposed antenna exhibits operational bandwidth of 1.2% with axial ratio below 3 dB and return loss above 10 dB in both polarized states. Good agreement between simulated and measured results is obtained.

Wind profile radar systems require antennas with multiple radiation beams for detecting wind velocity, as well as with a low sidelobe and dual polarization for enhancing the sensitivity for the weak signal reflected from the turbulence. This paper proposes a lens antenna operating at 24 GHz with four reconfigurable beams for wind profile radars. This lens antenna includes 2 × 2 corrugated horn antennas for radiating 24 GHz waves in two polarizations, and the dielectric lens for modulating four radiation beams with a high gain and low sidelobe. Experiments demonstrate that this lens antenna can realize reconfigurable beams with deflections of ±15° in dual polarizations, meanwhile with the gain of 30.58 dBi and the sidelobe of −20 dB. This proposed lens antenna can be applied to mmWave wind profile radars of wind turbines for enhancing wind power efficiency.

In this paper, a novel low cost, single-feed, and circular polarization reconfigurable antenna is designed and fabricated for future mid-band 5G applications. An innovative technique is used in this approach, which combines three techniques, namely: polygon U-slot, switchable vertical or horizontal slots, and shorting posts. The proposed antenna can alter its polarization sense between RHCP and LHCP with the ability to adjust the axial ratio position with respect to frequency along the impedance bandwidth of the antenna. The antenna is built on RT/duroid 5880 substrate with a maximum size of (31*31*3.15) .Two real diodes are integrated across the slot to change polarization sense. CST commercial software is used to simulate the antenna, and then it is fabricated and measured practically. Good agreements between the two results are achieved. However, The antenna has impedance bandwidth starting from 3.4995GHz to 3.73GHz with overlapped axial ratio bandwidth of 2.1% for both operation senses. Also, the antenna has good gain, and it has one resonant frequency at 3.6GHz for both operating states.

In this paper, a single fed polarization reconfigurable antenna is proposed. The antenna consists of a radiating patch incorporated with a diagonal-shaped slot at its center. Four p-i-n diodes are used for polarization reconfiguration. The p-i-n diodes are placed in diagonal slot region. The proposed antenna is designed to operate in three states – linear polarization (LP), left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) by biasing corresponding p-i-n diodes. The antenna gives measured peak gain of 6.2 dBi for LP state and 5.82 dBic for both RHCP and LHCP states. It also achieves 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth of 5.95% for both RHCP and LHCP configurations. The antenna finds application in areas of modern wireless communication.

This paper presents two polarization reconfigurable patch antennas using semiconductor distributed doped areas (ScDDAs) as active components. One proposed antenna has a switching polarization between two linear ones, while the other one has a polarization able to commute from a linear to a circular one. The antennas are designed on a silicon substrate in order to have the ScDDAs integrated in the substrate, overcoming the needs of classical PIN diodes. Therefore, the proposed co-design method between the antenna and the ScDDAs permits us to optimize the global reconfigurable function, designing both parts in the same process flow. Both demonstrators have a resonant frequency of around 5 GHz. The simulated results fit well with the measured ones.

Research on antenna reconfiguration is important in antenna applications. We present design of a multi-polarized plasma antenna with 40.68 MHz radio frequency (RF) power supplies and several discharge tubes filled with argon (neon) and mercury. Furthermore, self-made regulating circuits among the vibrators are introduced for the antenna array system. It can not only make the length of the dipole controllable but also improve the antenna gain and circular polarization (CP) performance under different lengths. Antenna arrays can be classified into linear and circular polarization by quickly adjusting the phase difference between vibrators. Both the experimental and simulation results indicate that the plasma antenna can realize impedance, pattern, and polarization reconstruction expediently. In addition, the linear polarization (LP) and CP can be transformed into each other quickly by adjusting the discharge conditions and regulating circuits. Moreover, compared with a symmetrical cross vibrator plasma antenna and a metal antenna of the same size, the proposed antenna array shows a certain gain and good reconfigurable performance within the frequency band of 150–250 MHz.

This paper proposes a dual-band reconfigurable square-ring antenna with a polarization diversity property. The proposed antenna consists of a square-ring resonator, two stubs with a shorting via, and two PIN diodes. The stub is positioned symmetrically to the left and right of the square-ring resonator, and the square-ring antenna connected to one of two stubs has a dual-band resonance. In this case, both resonant frequencies exhibit linear polarization (LP), and the two polarized waves are perpendicular to each other. The PIN diode selectively connects only one of the two stubs to the square-ring resonator. Thus, the polarization of the proposed antenna changes electrically at the two resonant frequencies. In addition, the frequency ratio (f2/f1) can be easily controlled by changing the length or width of the stub.

This article presented a compact and high gain antenna with reconfigurable polarization based on two inverted-V dipoles fabricated in a crossed configuration, and with a common planar reflector. The proposed antenna could generate four different types of polarizations, such as vertical polarization (VP), horizontal polarization (HP), right-hand circular polarization (RHCP), and left-hand circular polarization (LHCP). A pair of inverted-V dipoles drove the polarization diversity, where each dipole had an integrated matching circuit and a microstrip balun. Using a crossed inverted-V configuration with a ground plane as the common reflector, we could achieve compactness in size, high directivity, and a wider beamwidth than a normal dipole antenna. To verify the performance of the proposed antenna, we fabricated a sub-6GHz antenna with a Taconic TLX-9 substrate, which had a relative permittivity of 2.5. The proposed antenna showed a measured 10-dB impedance bandwidth of 752 MHz (5.376 GHz to 6.128 GHz). The peak gains for the VP, HP, RHCP and LHCP operations at 5.8 GHz were about 5.2 dBi, 4.61 dBi, 5.25 dBic, and 5.51 dBic, respectively. In addition, the half-power beamwidth (HPBW) for all the polarizations were greater than 78° in the operation band.

Besides the intensity and wavelength, the ability to analyze the optical polarization of detected light can provide a new degree of freedom for numerous applications, such as object recognition, biomedical applications, environmental monitoring, and remote sensing imaging. However, conventional filter-integrated polarimetric sensing systems require complex optical components and a complicated fabrication process, severely limiting their on-chip miniaturization and functionalities. Herein, the reconfigurable polarimetric photodetection with photovoltaic mode is developed based on a few-layer MoS2/PdSe2 heterostructure channel and a charge-trap structure composed of Al2O3/HfO2/Al2O3 (AHA)-stacked dielectrics. Because of the remarkable charge-trapping ability of carriers in the AHA stack, the MoS2/PdSe2 channel exhibits a high program/erase current ratio of 105 and a memory window exceeding 20 V. Moreover, the photovoltaic mode of the MoS2/PdSe2 Schottky diode can be operated and manipulable, resulting in high and distinct responsivities in the visible broadband. Interestingly, the linear polarization of the device can be modulated under program/erase states, enabling the reconfigurable capability of linearly polarized photodetection. This study demonstrates a new prototype heterostructure-based photodetector with the capability of both tunable responsivity and linear polarization, demonstrating great potential application toward reconfigurable photosensing and polarization-resolved imaging applications.
