Texto completo da fonteThe period of time which stretches between the two phases of violent iconoclastic destruction in Early Modern England also corresponds to the development of a new « metaphysical » poetics characteristically known for its striking conceits. The purpose of this study, which is devoted to George Herbert, will be to show how his poetry can become endowed with some of the properties usually ascribed to the religious image. The rhetorics of iconoclasm shape Herbert’s attempt to convert and purify poetry. Whereas past and future iconoclastic destruction testifies to a deeper crisis of the notion of image, George Herbert seeks to recreate it internally through a poetics of discordia concors whose model is the Incarnation. By distancing himself, as many other contemporary poets, from certain long-standing approaches to figurative language, he reclaims for poetry the power to body forth the divine. Such a recovery of resemblance is not only made possible through the « figure of transport », the metaphor, but aslo through an iconic use of writing. Thus Herbert is able to suggest the unspeakable and the transcendance of God

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis is concerned with reconstructing the movement or literary and artistic avant-garde of the early 20th century called Metaphysical Art through the figures of two poets: T.S. Eliot and Eugenio Montale and a painter: Giorgio de Chirico. The analysis of the philosophy and poetics of the authors in question has allowed us to identify a certain number of elements common to the three authors. This has made possible the reconstruction, or rather, the definition of the aforementioned avant-garde movement, which, in fact, without the present work, would not have found such a definition. Metaphysics as understood by T.S. Eliot, Montale and de Chirico rests, in particular, on the idea of the enigma that underpins reality, an enigma that is metaphysics itself, and on the idea of time as eternal present and eternal recurrence through the resurfacing of myth and literature as timeless voices. Thus, the Waste Land, for example, is the container in which the literary, poetic, mythical voices of other texts resonate, and the timelessness of the metaphysical atmospheres painted by de Chirico, (e.g. the statue of the abandoned Ariadne), represents also a return: the return of the mythical past of the Western culture into the present time

Texto completo da fonteJohn Donne is enrolled in the tradition of metaphysical poetry that emerged in the seventeenth century. This work proposes a study of the representation of woman in the poems of this metaphysical poet. The question was to examine about the atypical place that the woman represents in this poetry.In order to carry out this work, the author first sought to inscribe reflection more widely on the question of the place of women in society at the time of John Donne in the beginning of seventeenth century. Once the sociological context and the history studied, it is the place of the woman in the predecessors of John Donne which was studied.Thus are reviewed : Chaucer, Sidney and Shakespeare. Thirdly, the thesis proposes an analysis of the place of women in John Donne’s poetry. The poems include The Sun Rising , The Canonization , The Blossome. Song Goe, and catche, The Anniversarie, The Good-morrow, Loves Alchymie, The Extasie, A nocturnal upon S. Lucies day, The Flea, The Dreame, A Valediction : forbidding mourning and The Relique. The study highlighted the way in which the poet encourages the woman to free herself from traditions, both family and religious constraints. John Donne appeals to a modern woman for his time

Texto completo da fonteThe relationship between reality and dreams is the basis of art and thought of Savinio and the French surrealists: the Italian author is able to travel beyond the confines of this world reflecting theories of the French Movement. Breton and Savinio are two subversive “children” that love the present even if they converse with the past, two misfits who rise up against the constituted order: their arms are the writing and literature. It begins refusal of all the present and preceding literature in the name of a new and free art; a revolutionary art. But Savinio does not adapt to any label: convergences and affinities are possible thanks to the modern and highly alert sensibility. The position of Savinio and De Chirico is less radical regarding the programs of the surrealists, who take advantage of a literary and cultural tradition, more libertarian and one that has a more direct acquaintance of the psychoanalysis. The metaphysical art has placed conditions for the developments of surrealism and for its graft in Italian earth: Breton considers founders of surrealism the two siblings de Chirico
