In the ridesourcing industry, drivers are often unable to quickly and accurately locate the waiting position of riders, but patrol or wait on the road, which will seriously affect the management of the road traffic order. It may be a good idea to provide an online virtual site for the taxi to facilitate convergence of the rider and driver. The concept of recommended pick-up point is presented in this paper. At present, ridesourcing service platforms on the market have similar functions, but they do not take into account whether the setting of the pick-up point is compatible with the actual traffic environment, resulting in some problems. We have invented a method to select the recommended pick-up point by integrating various traffic influencing factors, so as to ensure that the setting of the pick-up point is compatible with the actual traffic situation, which consists of three steps. Firstly, we studied the rider’s maximum tolerable waiting time and defined an attractive walking range for riders based on the huge amount of data. In the second step, we analyzed spatial distribution characteristics of the taxi demand hotspot and determined candidate pick-up locations. Lastly, the fuzzy analytic hierarchy method was used to select the recommended pick-up point that is most conducive to traffic management from multiple candidate points. A case study was conducted to validate the proposed approach and experimental evidence showed that recommended results based on the approach are in line with the actual situation of the road, and conducive to road traffic management. This recommendation method is based on real ridesourcing orders data.

The use of pick-up points by consumers is one of the most developed areas of research in the literature on last-mile logistics over the last decade. In this regard, several researchers have attempted to expose the factors that influence consumers’ online shopping behavior and their willingness to use pick-up points. However, no study has addressed this issue in African countries. The aim of this research is to examine the online shopping behavior of Moroccan consumers, focusing on their opinions about using pick-up points to receive/return goods purchased online. This research adopted a qualitative approach through focus group sessions with Moroccan consumers. The results indicate that temporal and spatial flexibility, competitive prices, and the quality of the retailer’s website are the main factors encouraging consumers to buy online. On the other hand, product risk, delivery risk, privacy, and security were identified as the factors that prevent consumers from buying online. In contrast, the location, density, security, and opening hours of pick-up points were considered to be the factors that influence the Moroccan consumer’s choice to use this delivery option when buying online. These findings are important both for parcel delivery companies that want to establish pick-up point networks in Casablanca and for public authorities and local communities that want to formulate policies and implement strategies leading to more sustainable urban environments.

Abstract. Residents’ activities have a significant interaction with urban socioeconomic environment. Taxi trajectory data has been widely used to mine human activity patterns to identify urban functional districts. However, previous studies merely chose several spatiotemporal statistics of taxi pick-up and drop-off points. This paper compares seven time series statistics of taxi pick-up and drop-off points, and selects the best combination to identify urban functional districts. The basic analysis units are not only constructed based on the OpenStreetMap data, but also optimized with the fine-grained clean rasterized pixels, generated from preprocessed taxi trajectory data through the improved head/tail breaks method. The experiment conducted in Wuchang District, Wuhan, shows that the combination of the average statistics of pick-up points, the average statistics of drop-off points, and the ratio statistics of pick-up and drop-off difference achieves the best identification precision of 83.65%, the F1-score of 82.2%, and the recall score of 81.48%. The proposed approach has good scalability and can be transplant to other identification applications.

Background:Traffic accidents, hazardous behaviors, and caretakers’ opinions have a strong effect on students’ safety during the drop-off and pick-up period. The present research about student drop-off and pick-up behaviors and spatial analysis will be helpful for better understanding school traffic incidents and related risk factors. Objective:To examine the risk factors associated with school drop-off and pick-up in three dimensions: 1) risk zones, 2) risk behaviors, and 3) risk periods.Method:A mixed method approach was employed using 4 sets of data, consisting of 1) the statistics of accidents occurring around primary schools, 2) the student drop-off and pick-up behaviors, 3) the opinions toward risk zones and risk periods, and 4) the data obtained from the survey and interview. The spatial analysis was conducted using kernel density estimation technique. The statistical data analysis was carried out to analyze and compare the questionnaire responses given by the teachers and parents from the primary schools with the highest accident rate in 5 regions of Thailand. Results:Pedestrian crossing points in front of the school gates and blind spots behind the school buildings were considered the risk zones. In the morning, the parents usually dropped the students off at the pavements in front of the school gate. Some of them walked the students to the classrooms. After school, the parents parked their cars and then walked to wait for the students at the meeting points scattered inside or outside the school. The opinions of the teachers and parents regarding the risk periods were found to be significantly different (p< 0.01), which affected the way the teachers and parents looked out for the students’ safety in the morning and after school period. Conclusion:The areas around pedestrian crossing points and school gates require effective transport planning in order to specifically prevent and monitor hazardous incidents. A scattering of drop-off and pick-up points are risk behaviors. Therefore, each school should clearly set up safe drop-off and pick-up points and pay close attention to the safety of students both in the morning and after school. Creating safety for students should start with improving the school environment in order to reduce anxiety and facilitate behavior change.

Palavras-chave: Pick-up Points. Logística Urbana. Logística de Medicamentos. Cadeia de Suprimentos da Saúde. AbstractThe aim of this exploratory study is to analyze the willingness of Brazilian consumers to use the logistical solution through pick-up points for the withdrawal of medicines, items of recurrent consumption and essential, especially in the current context of the pandemic. Pick-up points are physical locations where consumers can collect products purchased over the internet or over the phone. This solution allows the use of a distribution network with storage at a manufacturer or distributor, resulting in lower logistics costs. In turn, consumers can benefit, as they do not have to wait for deliveries, being able to receive their orders in advance and find more affordable freight. To obtain data on the respondents' choices, a fully online form was applied showing hypothetical situations of delivery according to the declared preference technique. The research results showed that the proposed logistical solution can be viable, as long it presents extra benefits to consumers, when compared to conventional delivery. Keywords: Pick-up Points. In recent years, with the development of spatial crowdsourcing technology, online car-hailing, as a typical spatiotemporal crowdsourcing task application scenario, has attracted widespread attention. Existing researches on spatial crowdsourcing are mainly based on the coordinate positions of user and worker roles to achieve task allocation with the goal of maximum matching number or lowest cost. However, they ignores the problem of the selection of the pick-up point which needs to be solved in the actual scene of online car booking. This problem needs to take into account the four-dimensional coordinate positions of users, workers, pick-up point and destination. Based on this, this study designs a pick-up point recommendation strategy based on user incentive mechanism. Firstly, a new four-dimensional crowdsourcing model is established, which is closer to the practical application of crowdsourcing problem. Secondly, taking cost optimization as the index, a user incentive mechanism is designed to encourage users to walk to the appropriate pick-up point within a certain distance. Thirdly, a concept of forward rate is proposed to reduce the computation time. Some key factors, such as the maximum walking distance limit of users and task cost, are considered as the recommendation index for measuring the pick-up point. Then, an effective pick-up point recommendation strategy is designed based on this index. Experiments show that the strategy proposed in this article can achieve reasonable recommendation for pick-up points and improve the efficiency of drivers and reduce the total trip cost of orders to the greatest extent.

Online sales have steadily increased in recent years. Unlike the traditional retail shopping model, e-commerce must deliver custom orders to highly dispersed locations. Consequently, negative effects have been observed in large urban and densely populated areas, such as congestion and pollution. Pick-up points (PPs) are fast-growing solutions that provide parcel delivery and picking services at diverse locations throughout major city centers. This paper describes an optimization-based approach aimed to investigate the conditions in which a network of pick-up points can be more efficient than home deliveries from operational and environmental points of view in urban last-mile distribution. Differently from the related literature, in which analytical models were employed, we use optimization and algorithms to determine the economic and environmental benefits of packages destined for pick-up points instead of home deliveries. The framework was applied to the city of São Paulo, in Brazil. Several scenarios were evaluated, comprising different densities and percentages of deliveries destined for PPs. The results show that PPs can be a promising alternative for reducing the environmental externalities, as fleet and vehicle mileage can be reduced by more than 50%.

In recent years, customer pick-up at collection and delivery points has become a popular alternative to traditional home delivery, which is under great pressure. However, current service of pick-up facilities has seldom been geographically evaluated despite its general uneven distribution and diverse needs. In this paper, in order to interpret the differentiation in customers’ service demands toward reception alternatives and in facilities’ service excludability in different built environments, a two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method is improved to measure customers’ spatial accessibility to pick-up facilities, providing a methodology to evaluate the match relation between the differentiated supply and demand of pick-up service. A case study of widespread automated parcel stations (APSs) is conducted in Hangzhou, China and correlative factors to residents’ accessibility are discussed. From the results, residents’ accessibility to pick-up service shows significant spatial unevenness and social inequity in the study area, which is found to correlate most to residences’ maintenance management. As well-managed, gated communities generally hold effective access to exclusive services, most open communities and self-built, single houses are in need of improvement due to inadequate service stemming from a high aging rate, lack of property management, and low service availability of nonexclusive facilities in open areas.

As a crucial part of the urban system, road networks play a key role in the evolution of the urban structure. Therefore, studying the structural characteristics of urban road networks is pivotal for improving the efficiency of traffic network nodes and for relieving traffic pressure. This paper applies an urban road network analysis method to measure the centrality of the multiscale road network in Shenzhen, China. Taxi GPS data from October 17 to October 23, 2017, were selected for analysis of spatial distribution characteristics. This paper also established a regression model of taxi pick-up and drop-off frequency and road network centrality for further analysis. Several interesting observations were made. With respect to the increasing search radius, the closeness centrality indicator shifts from a multicentered distribution to a single-centered distribution, while the betweenness centrality indicator shifts from a patchy distribution to a distribution along the main roads. In addition, the straightness centrality indicator turns from a dispersed distribution to a point-axis distribution, concentrated in the southern part of the city. Second, there were variations between the centrality of the road network and the location of taxi pick-up and drop-off points. The regression model gets the highest value of R2, indicating a significant correlation in cases where the search radius is 3 km. Finally, the relationship exhibits a clear positive correlation between the betweenness centrality and taxi pick-up and drop-off points. On the other hand, closeness centrality is not correlated with these points. The straightness centrality has a negative correlation with the frequency of taxi pick-up and drop-off at 3 km and 8 km scale.

In view of the fact that the density-based clustering algorithm is sensitive to the input data, which results in the limitation of computing space and poor timeliness, a new method is proposed based on grid information entropy clustering algorithm for mining hotspots of taxi passengers. This paper selects representative geographical areas of Nanjing and Beijing as the research areas and uses information entropy and aggregation degree to analyze the distribution of passenger-carrying points. This algorithm uses a grid instead of original trajectory data to calculate and excavate taxi passenger hotspots. Through the comparison and analysis of the data of taxi loading points in Nanjing and Beijing, it is found that the experimental results are consistent with the actual urban passenger hotspots, which verifies the effectiveness of the algorithm. It overcomes the shortcomings of a density-based clustering algorithm that is limited by computing space and poor timeliness, reduces the size of data needed to be processed, and has greater flexibility to process and analyze massive data. The research results can provide an important scientific basis for urban traffic guidance and urban management.

Robotic bin-picking performance has been gaining attention in recent years with the development of increasingly advanced camera and machine vision systems, collaborative and industrial robots, and sophisticated robotic grippers. In the random bin-picking process, the wide variety of objects in terms of shape, weight, and surface require complex solutions for the objects to be reliably picked. The challenging part of robotic bin-picking is to determine object pick-points correctly. This paper presents a simulation model based on ADAMS/MATLAB cosimulation for robotic pick-point evaluation for a 2-F robotic gripper. It consists of a mechanical model constructed in ADAMS/View, MATLAB/Simulink force controller, several support functions, and the graphical user interface developed in MATLAB/App Designer. Its functionality can serve three different applications, such as: (1) determining the optimal pick-points of the object due to object complexity, (2) selecting the most appropriate robotic gripper, and (3) improving the existing configuration of the robotic gripper (finger width, depth, shape, stroke width, etc.). Additionally, based on this analysis, new variants of robotic grippers can be proposed. The simulation model has been verified on a selected object on a sample 2-F parallel robotic gripper, showing promising results, where up to 75% of pick-points were correctly determined in the initial testing phase.

Previous studies have proposed various frameworks and algorithms to optimize routes to reduce total transportation cost, which accounts for over 29.4% of overall logistics costs. However, it is very hard to find cases in which mathematical models or algorithms are applied to practical business environment cases which require reusable packaging, especially daily operating logistics services like convenience store support systems. Most previous studies have considered developing an optimal algorithm which can solve the mathematical problem within a practical amount of time while satisfying all constraints, such as the capacity of delivery and pick-up, and hard or soft time windows. For daily delivery and pick-up services, like those supporting several convenience stores, it is required to consider the unit transporting the container, as well as the demand, capacity of trucks, travel distance, and traffic congestion. In particular, reusable transport containers and trays should be regarded as important assets of logistics centers. However, if the mathematical model focuses on only satisfying constraints related to delivery and not considering the cost of trays, it is often to leave the empty trays on the pick-up points when there is not enough space in the track. In this study, we propose a mathematical model for optimizing delivery and pick-up plans by extending the general vehicle routing problem of simultaneous delivery and pick-up with time windows, while considering left-over cost. With numerical experiments it has been proved that the proposed model may reduce the total delivery cost. Also, it seems possible to apply the proposed approach to the various logistics businesses which require reusable transport containers like shipping containers, refrigerating containers, trays, and pallets.

Carsharing practices are spreading across many cities in the world. This paper analyzes real-life data obtained from a private carsharing company operating in the city of Barcelona, Spain. After describing the main trends in the data, machine learning and time-series analysis methods are employed to better understand citizens’ needs and behavior, as well as to make predictions about the evolution of their demand for this service. In addition, an original proposal is made regarding the location of the pick-up points. This proposal is based on a capacitated dispersion algorithm, and aims at balancing two relevant factors, including scattering of pick-up points (so that most users can benefit from the service) and efficiency (so that areas with higher demand are well covered). Our aim is to gain a deeper understanding of citizens’ needs and behavior in relation to carsharing services. The analysis includes three main components: descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive, resulting in customer segmentation and forecast of service demand, as well as original concepts for optimizing parking station location.

With the emergence of dynamic passenger transport systems, such as demand-responsive transport (DRT) and ride-sharing without predetermined stop locations as used for static bus routes, accurate routing for these flexible door-to-door transport services is needed. Routing between two addresses requires the assignment of addresses to suitable, so-called snapping points as reference points on the road network. Therefore, many conventional routing machines use perpendicular distance to identify the nearest point on the road network. However, this technique tends to produce inaccurate results if the access to a building is not reachable from the road segment with the shortest perpendicular distance. We provide a novel approach to identify the access to buildings (paths) based on remote sensing data to obtain more reasonable stop locations for passenger transport. Multispectral images, OpenStreetMap data, and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data were used to perform a cost distance analysis based on vegetation cover, building footprints, and the slope of the terrain to identify such optimised stop locations. We assumed that the access to buildings on the shortest route to the building’s entrance consists of little vegetation cover and minimal slope of the terrain; furthermore, the calculated path should not cross building footprints. Thus, snapping points on the road network can be determined based on the most likely path between a building and the road network. We validated our results based on a predetermined ideal snapping area considering different weightings for the parameters slope, vegetation, and building footprints. The results were compared with a conventional routing machine that uses perpendicular distance. This routing machine shows a validation rate of 81.4%, whereas the validation rate of our presented approach is as high as 90.3%. This new approach provides increased accuracy and better comfort for flexible passenger transport systems.

A longitudinal dynamic cohort study was conducted on patients with median nerve injuries to evaluate the relative responsiveness of five sensibility tests: touch threshold using the WEST (monofilaments), static two-point discrimination, locognosia, a pick-up test and an object recognition test. Repeated assessments were performed starting at 6 months after surgery. In order to compare the relative responsiveness of each test, effect size and the standard response mean were calculated for sensibility changes occurring between 6 and 18 months after repair. Large effect sizes (>0.8) and standard response means (>0.8) were obtained for the WEST, locognosia, pick-up and object recognition tests. Two-point discrimination was hardly measurable at any time point and exhibited strong flooring effects. Further analysis of all time points was undertaken to assess the strength of the monotonic relationship between test scores and time elapsed since surgery. Comparison of monotonicity between the five tests indicated that the WEST performed best, whereas two-point discrimination performed worst. These results suggest that the monofilament test (WEST), locognosia test, Moberg pick-up test and tactile gnosis test capture sensibility changes over time well and should be considered for inclusion in the outcome assessment of patients with median nerve injury.

The success of implant-supported prostheses is related to the passive union between the prostheses’ connections and the implants, so it is necessary to obtain an accurate working cast. Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of the transfer impressions of implants performed with individual acrylic resin trays and conventional trays using polyvinyl siloxane. Material and methods: To carry out the transfer impressions, a master cast with four external hexagon implants parallel to each other was used. Five impressions were made with individual acrylic resin trays and five other impressions with modified conventional trays, opened in the region of the implants. The linear measurements between the implants were made with a digital caliper with an accuracy of 0.01 mm and the results were statistically evaluated (alpha = 5%). Results: For the points AB and BC, the measurements obtained with the individual trays were statistically similar to the master cast. For the points CD and DA no statistical differences among the three groups were observed. Conclusion: Given the obtained results and the methodology used, it can be concluded that the impressions performed with individual trays presented higher accuracy compared to the ones obtained with conventional trays.

LazisMu Umbulharjo has quite a number of social activities, including raising funds through charity boxes to several points, such as places of worship, community services, and Muhammadiyah residents in the Umbulharjo area and its surroundings. LazisMu Umbulharjo has managed at least 900 charity boxes spread across 7 sub-districts of the Umbulharjo area and also outside the Umbulharjo area. Currently, the courier who shuttles the charity box is guided by the address that is packaged in a printed sheet that comes from Excel data. Some of the difficulties experienced by couriers when picking up charity boxes at these 900 points, among others, the large number of points that must be visited by one courier. Couriers have difficulty memorizing the positions of the hundreds of charity boxes. Courier difficulties and often missed on the way to the points of the charity box. Problems occur if the staff replaces them with new ones so that adjustments are made from scratch again in learning the pick-up location. This research was conducted based on the stages in the User Centered Design (UCD) process. Plan the human centered process, specify the context of use, specify user and organizational requirements, product design solutions, and evaluate design against user requirements. Research has produced a prototype of the LazisMu Umbulharjo application with the main features of a dashboard for managing data and general information and managing a charity box. User management, charity box location management, and finally the determination of the pick-up route. The application prototype has been tested for usability and calculated using the System Usability Scale (SUS) with an average score of 82. Based on this score, the prototype of the LazisMu Umbulharjo application can be accepted by users (ACCEPTABLE) with grade A and gets an EXCELLENT level

The transportation of urban and rural primary and secondary schools leads to traffic congestion in some sections, and the traffic order is chaotic, which seriously affects the travel of surrounding residents and greatly increases the additional traffic delay of pickup. How to effectively manage and plan the transportation of urban and rural primary and secondary schools and rationally plan the channelization of transportation roads have become a topic of great concern to the society. This paper will take several primary and secondary schools with representative traffic environment as the research object, analyze the behavior mechanism of the pick-up process, propose coping strategies for the school pick-up congestion problem under different road conditions, and plan a reasonable road channelization scheme and intersection design scheme. Finally, through the VISSIM simulation software, the proposed scheme and the original traffic environment are simulated and analyzed, and the vehicle delay before and after the improvement is compared, so as to find out whether the traffic planning and management scheme given in response to the school address in different traffic environments is reasonable. Through the simulation results, it is found that it is beneficial to reduce vehicle delay and avoid traffic jam by changing bidirectional to unidirectional on road section. In the vicinity of the intersection, one-way is the main way, and planning multiple drop-off points is helpful to solve the traffic congestion caused by school pick-up.

Given two pick-up and delivery points, the best path chosen does not necessarily follow the criteria of minimum travel time or generalized minimum cost evaluated with a deterministic approach. Given a criterion, the perceived cost is not deterministic for many reasons (congestion, incomplete information on the state of the system, inexact prediction of the system state, etc.). The same consideration applies to the best-chosen route, assuming that the route is an ordered list of network nodes to visit. The paths and routes perceived and chosen (drivers or companies) could follow different criteria (i.e., minizmum congested travel time for the path and minimum monetary cost for the route). In this context, the paths chosen between two pick-up and delivery points, studied with the path choice problem (PCP), influence the best route, studied with the vehicle routing problem (VRP). This paper reports some considerations on the importance of modelling the path choice behavior in the VRP; the influence of the PCP on the VRP is studied. The considerations are supported by a numerical example in a small network in which the results obtained by adopting the deterministic or probabilistic models for the PCP are compared. To validate the reported thesis, the models are applied in a small test system, and it allows the reader to follow the numerical results step by step.

It is an important content of smart city research to study the activity track of urban residents, dig out the hot spot areas and spatial interaction patterns of different residents’ activities, and clearly understand the travel rules of urban residents' activities. This study used community detection to analyze taxi passengers’ travel hot spots based on taxi pick-up and drop-off data, combined with multisource information such as land use, in the main urban area of Nanjing. The study revealed that, for the purpose of travel, the modularity and anisotropy rate of the community where the passengers were picked up and dropped off were positively correlated during the morning and evening peak hours and negatively correlated at other times. Depending on the community structure, pick-up and drop-off points reached significant aggregation within the community, and interactions among the communities were also revealed. Based on the type of land use, as passengers' travel activity increased, travel hot spots formed clusters in urban spaces. After comparative verification, the results of this study were found to be accurate and reliable and can provide a reference for urban planning and traffic management.

Abstract. Taxi trajectory data contains the detailed spatial and temporal traveling information of urban residents. By using a clustering algorithm, the hotspots’ distributions of pick-up and drop-off points can be extracted to explore the patterns of taxi traveling behaviors and its relationship with urban environment. Comparing with traditional methods that determine hotspots at a relatively large scale, we propose an approach to detect small-scale hotspots, so called docking points, to represent the local clusters in both sparse and dense stops areas. In this method, we divide the research area into grids and extract the docking points by finding local maximums of a certain range. The extracted docking points are classified into five levels for the subsequent analysis. Finally, to uncover detail characteristics of taxi mobility patterns, we analyze the distributions of docking points from three aspects – the overall, by day of the week, and by time of the day.

This paper concentrates on modeling the vehicle routing to develop an evacuation plan for transit-dependent residents during emergency situation. Planning of transit route in the evacuation is formulated as a vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW). An intelligent algorithm, in which genetic algorithm is embedded with simulated annealing is developed to solve the optimization model. A real evacuation network on which 19 pick-up points and 4 shelters are distributed is used to study the proposed evacuation strategy. The relevant results show the feasibility of the mathematical model as well as the efficiency of the solving algorithm.

Introduction: One of the significant characteristics of schools in Vietnam is that almost all parents send their children to school and/or pick up their children from school using private vehicles (motorcycles). The parents usually stop and park their vehicle on streets outside the school gates, which can lead to serious congestion and increases the likelihood of traffic accidents. Methods: The objective of this study is to find out factors affecting the picking up of pupils at primary school by evaluating the typical primary schools in Hanoi city. A binary logistic regression model was used to determine factors that influence the decision of picking up pupils and the waiting duration of parents. The behavior of motorcyclists during the process of picking up pupils at the primary school gate has been identified and analyzed in detail by the Kinovea software. Results and Discussion: The study showed that, on the way back home, almost all parents use motorbikes (89.15%) to pick up their children. During their waiting time (8.48 minutes in average), they made a lot of illegal parking actions on the street there by, causing a lot of “cognitive” errors and “crash” points surrounding in front of the primary school entrance gate. Risky picking-up behaviors were significantly observed, i.e. picking-up on opposite side of the school, making a U-turn, backing-up dangerously, parking on the middle of street, and parking on the street next to sidewalk). Conclusion: Based on the analyzed results, several traffic management measures have been suggested to enhance traffic safety and reduce traffic congestion in front of school gates. In addition, the results of the study will provide a useful reference for policymakers and authorities.

A novel trip-chaining strategy for taxi booking based on a customized algorithm of Pickup and Delivery Problem with Time Window (PDPTW) was proposed. The idea is to chain several bookings with demand time points which are spread out within a reasonable period of time, and with each pick-up point coinciding with or being within close proximity to the previous drop-off location. Based on the simulation results, the proposed system has the potential to improve the taxi booking service currently operating in Singapore.

This paper proposes a method for evaluating forced and self-excited vibrations at the design stage of machine-tool structural systems. Cross modal flexibilities between the forced excited and the displacement pick-up points are analyzed. The relationships between the highest allowable values of receptance and vibrational displacement, and the static compliance and modal flexibility are clarified. Then the algorithms of the evaluative methods which use those analyses are given. Using the proposed method, natural modes which must be disregarded in the evaluation of the characteristics can be determined, (1) even when directional orientations of the excited force at points in regard change greatly as a result of states of operations or cannot be definitely determined, and (2) even if damping properties are not clearly known. Designers can judge whether or not a given structural design has vibrational defects. The procedures of the evaluative method are exemplified with numerical examples.

Problems in urban areas at present are caused by the high traffic volumes of motor vehicles. Changing commercial behaviour into e-commerce reduces the need for individual customers to visit shopping centres and increases the need for freight transport to geographically dispersed consumers. In this case, one solution to reduce the number of lorry journeys may be collection points, such as a network of parcel lockers. However, the use of collection points has only a limited impact on reducing the number of cars on the streets because half of the journeys to parcel lockers are still made by car. This study assumes that consumers’ choice of how to collect their parcels depends on the available infrastructure and the time needed to reach the pick-up point, which depends on the distance from the place of residence/work/school. The purpose of this research was to analyse the location of collection points in relation to the alternative infrastructure and places of residence/work/school using Gdańsk, Poland, as an example. The analysis showed that collection points are usually easily accessible by car, are not always accessible by foot, and in only a few cases are easily accessible by bicycle.

A qualitative theory of two-dimensional quadratic-polynomial integrable dynamical systems (DSs) is constructed on the basis of a discriminant criterion elaborated in the paper. This criterion enables one to pick up a single parameter that makes it possible to identify all feasible solution classes as well as the DS critical and singular points and solutions. The integrability of the considered DS family is established. Nine specific solution classes are identified. In each class, clear types of symmetry are determined and visualized and it is discussed how transformations between the solution classes create new types of symmetries. Visualization is performed as series of phase portraits revealing all possible catastrophic scenarios that result from the transition between the solution classes.

SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) resulted in school closures and contingencies across the U.S. that limited access to school meals for students. While some schools attempted to provide alternative meal access points where students or parents could pick up meals, many students—especially those in low-income households—lacked adequate transportation to these access points. Thus, physical proximity to meal access points was particularly important during the pandemic. In this study, we explore how school meal access changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially as it relates to race/ethnicity and socio-economic status. Taking into account both the “supply” (meal access points) and the “demand” (low-income students) for free meals, we employed a two-step floating catchment area analysis to compare meal accessibility in St. Louis, Missouri before and during the pandemic in the spring and summer of 2019 and 2020. Overall, while school meal access decreased during the spring of 2020 during the early months of the pandemic, it increased during the summer of 2020. Moreover, increased access was greatest in low-income areas and areas with a higher proportion of Black residents. Thus, continuing new policies that expanded access to school meals—especially for summer meal programs—could lead to positive long-term impacts on children’s health and well-being.

Purpose – Earlier research on “Hole-in-the-Wall (HiWEL)” conclusively indicated groups of children pick up computer literacy on their own and are adept at performing basic functions such as cut, copy, paste, surf the internet to answer high-end questions. Research also indicates that children self-organize themselves to figure out things which they find difficult and thus learning is a continuous process for them. The studies have also indicated that HiWEL pedagogy is child centric and is at the discretion of the child. Children organize themselves and become self-regulated learners. However, so far no study has been undertaken to determine whether children accessing Hole-in-the-Wall learning stations (HiWEL LSs) can improve in mathematics and English. The intent of the present study is to examine whether groups of children are able to pick up mathematics and English on their own using the learning station. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – In order to study the impact of HiWEL LS on mathematics and English, the authors took two groups; experimental group and control group from six states. Experimental group – 31 children from each site (except for two sites, where experimental group consisted of 30 children) were randomly selected to be a part of the study. 16 children from class 6th and 15 children from class 7th were identified. For this study, the experimental group consisted of a total of 277 children from nine locations. Mathematics and English tests were administered at two time points, pre and post within a gap of six months of installing the learning station. Control group – children that formed the control group were selected from nearby villages with similar socioeconomic background as the experimental group. A total of 135 children (15 children per location) were selected for this study. This group did not have access to HiWEL LS or to any other computers. These children were also tested on the same two tests at two time points, pre and post within a gap of six months. Findings – Children exposed and using HiWEL LSs pick up academic English and mathematics on their own for grade 6th and 7th. These are government school going children. Qualitatively, the teachers and parents feel that they too have seen the benefits in the academic achievement of these children. Research limitations/implications – The study was done for a six-month period across seven sites. This study should be replicated over across entire India and a bigger sample should be taken for results to be conclusive. Practical implications – The actual quantity of schooling that underprivileged children experience and the quality of teaching they receive are extremely insufficient. This seems to be true of both the educationally more advanced states and the educationally backward states. These findings suggest a new pedagogy for enabling children to improve their academic performance which in turn leads to improvement in school performance. Thus, for the current educational system, it is important to have alternatives. Originality/value – So far, no study has been undertaken to determine whether children accessing HiWEL LSs can improve in mathematics and English. The intent of the present study is to examine whether groups of children are able to pick up mathematics and English on their own using the learning station. And, the findings have been positive.

Three-dimensional fine point cloud has gradually become a key data source of three-dimensional model. The large scale point cloud interactive quick pick up is a kind of important operation in the point cloud data processing and applications. Since the point cloud model is composed of massive points, the speed of ordinary picking method is limited. A GPU-based point cloud picking algorithm was thus presented to solve the problem. The basic idea of the algorithm is that by spatial transformation converting the point cloud to screen space, and then, the point was calculated which is the nearest to the mouse click point in screen space. The GPU's parallel computing capabilities were used to achieve spatial transformation and distance comparison by compute shader in this algorithm. So the speed of the pickup has been increased. The results show that compared with the CPU, the pickup method based on GPU has greater speed advantage. Especially for the point cloud over 4 million points, the speed of the pickup has been increased 2-3 times faster.

This article explores the way social actors organize their engagements in real time. The term “narrative” points to the subjectively understood practical projects that people structure with beginnings, middles, and ends. All projects may be interrupted, and if social actors are to continue the narrative engagement they must treat the stoppage as a mere suspension. The work of suspending a game of informal pick-up basketball is examined in three phases: interrupting the game, treating the game as suspended, and resuming play. In each phase, players collectively resist the possibility of abandonment as an alternative to game resumption. While narrative structuring is a powerful locus of meaning across diverse social contexts, informal basketball games offer a particularly good setting for the study of narrative organization in social life.

Garbage pick-ups performed by two or more people must have a route in their pickup. However, it is not easy to model the route of the pickup that each point must be passed and each point is only passed once. Now, the method to create a route has been done a lot, one of the most commonly used methods is the creation of routes using the Traveling Salesman Problem method. Traveling Salesman Problem is a method to determine the route of a series of cities where each city is only traversed once. In this study, the shortest route modeling was conducted using Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem and Genetic Algorithm to find out the shortest route model that can be passed in garbage pickup. In this study, datasets will be used as pick-up points to then be programmed to model the shortest routes that can be traveled. The application of Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem method using Genetic Algorithm shows success to model garbage pickup route based on existing dataset, by setting the parameters of 100 generations and 100 population and 4 salesmen obtained 90% of the best individual opportunities obtained with the best individual fitness value of 0.05209. The test was conducted using BlackBox testing and the results of this test that the functionality on the system is 100% appropriate.

Microtransit is a shared mobility service that operates between fixed-route transit and ride-hailing. It operates with a fleet of vans or minibuses within a service zone that is usually located in a rural or suburban car-oriented area with a transport demand that is temporally and spatially dispersed. Microtransit often expects customers to walk a short distance to pick-up/drop-off (PUDO) locations. The PUDO points need to be quickly, easily, and safely reachable by pedestrians. Thus, PUDO locations must be chosen after analyzing the walkability of the suburban area served by microtransit. This paper presents a comparison of macroscale and microscale indicators to assess the walkability of suburban neighborhoods where microtransit has to be introduced. We chose three suburban neighborhoods (Partanna Mondello, Tommaso Natale, and Mondello) in Palermo, Italy, as a study area, aiming to identify the best places to locate PUDO stops for a microtransit service. A GIS database has been built associating each link with a series of qualitative and quantitative attributes. Finally, we developed a walkability index that indicates the attractiveness of specific locations in terms of intermodal walkability. We also identified the critical pedestrian links that need actions to improve their walkability.
