This paper examines the electrostatic shielding in plasmas, and resolves inconsistencies about what the Debye length really is. Two different interpretations of the Debye length are currently used: (1) The potential energy approximately equals the thermal energy, and (2) the ratio of the shielded to the unshielded potential drops to 1/e. We examine these two interpretations of the Debye length for equilibrium plasmas described by the Boltzmann distribution, and non-equilibrium plasmas (e.g. space plasmas) described by kappa distributions. We study three dimensionalities of the electrostatic potential: 1-D potential of linear symmetry for planar charge density, 2-D potential of cylindrical symmetry for linear charge density, and 3-D potential of spherical symmetry for a point charge. We resolve critical inconsistencies of the two interpretations, including: independence of the Debye length on the dimensionality; requirement for small charge perturbations that is equivalent to weakly coupled plasmas; correlations between ions and electrons; existence of temperature for non-equilibrium plasmas; and isotropic Debye shielding. We introduce a third Debye length interpretation that naturally emerges from the second statistical moment of the particle position distribution; this is analogous to the kinetic definition of temperature, which is the second statistical moment of the velocity distribution. Finally, we compare the three interpretations, identifying what information is required for theoretical/experimental plasma-physics research: Interpretation 1 applies only to kappa distributions; Interpretation 2 is not restricted to any specific form of the ion/electron distributions, but these forms have to be known; Interpretation 3 needs only the second statistical moment of the positional distribution.

The notion of internalization put forth by Roger Shepard continues to be appealing and challenging. He suggests that we have internalized, during our evolutionary development, environmental regularities, or constraints. Internalization solves one of the hardest problems of perceptual psychology: the underspecification problem. That is the problem of how well-defined perceptual experience is generated from the often ambiguous and incomplete sensory stimulation. Yet, the notion of internalization creates new problems that may outweigh the solution of the underspecification problem. To support this claim, I first examine the concept of internalization, breaking it down into several distinct interpretations. These range from well-resolved dynamic regularities to ill-resolved statistical regularities. As a function of the interpretation the researcher selects, an empirical test of the internalization hypothesis may be straightforward or it may become virtually impossible. I then attempt to cover the range of interpretations by drawing on examples from different domains of visual event perception. Unfortunately, the experimental tests regarding most candidate regularities, such as gravitational acceleration, fail to support the concept of internalization. This suggests that narrow interpretations of the concept should be given up in favor of more abstract interpretations. However, the latter are not easily amenable to empirical testing. There is nonetheless a way to test these abstract interpretations by contrasting internalization with the opposite concept: externalization of body dynamics. I summarize evidence for such a projection of body constraints onto external objects. Based on the combined evidence of well-resolved and ill- resolved regularities, the value of the notion of internalization has to be reassessed.

This paper extends and illustrates a probabilistic interpretation of the fractional derivative operator proposed by Pr. José Tenreiro Machado. While his interpretation concerned the probability of finding samples of the derivate signal in the expression of the fractional derivative, the present paper proposes interpretations for other fractional models and more generally fractional behaviours (without using a model). It also proposes probabilistic interpretations in terms of time constants and time delay distributions. It shows that these probabilistic interpretations in terms of time delay distributions can be connected to the physical behaviour of real systems governed by adsorption or diffusion phenomena.

Abstract This article investigates the various ways in which Pentecostals read and interpreted the narrative of the woman whom Jesus healed of an “issue of blood.” It explores the manner in which she and her experience are described and explained by Pentecostals in articles and sermons from the beginning of the movement to the present day. The article attempts to survey and analyze the different interpretations and how they have changed over time. While early pentecostal literature used the narrative as an opportunity to engage in anti-physician rhetoric and to defend the doctrine of healing in the atonement, later literature expanded the interpretation of the woman’s issue beyond physical healing to include other “issues” a person might face. Present throughout the literature is an emphasis on the woman’s faith and her personal agency to bring about the miracle. However, also present are negative interpretations of the woman and her “issue of blood.” Finally, the article looks forward to other possible interpretive strategies.

Abstract: The question of how two agents—creaturely and divine—can bring about one action has been a theological conundrum for ages. This article explores Thomas Aquinas's view on God's involvement in creaturely action by looking specifically at his doctrine of divine application. What sort of action does God perform in creaturely action? After establishing a textual basis for a discussion of God's action in creaturely action in Aquinas, the article discusses and evaluates three interpretations: (1) Robert Matava's recent interpretation of divine application in terms of creation-conservation; (2) Reginald Garrigou-Langrange's traditional interpretation in terms of physical premotion ( praemotio physica ); and (3) Bernard Lonergan's interpretation in terms of Aristotelian premotion. The article then delineates the differences in the metaphysics of creaturely action. It argues that Aristotelian physical premotion provides a substantive alternative to the traditional account of physical premotion—an alternative that holds that divine application is motion and therefore does not reduce the divina applicatio to a dimension of creation-conservation.

Anxiety disorders and social anxiety disorder in particular, are common in childhood and associated with negative short and long term consequences. Psychophysiological theories suggest that anxiety disorders are associated with chronic dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system, as indexed by respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and heart rate (HR). Findings to date regarding autonomic arousal at rest and in response to stress, among children with (social) anxiety disorder(s) have been inconsistent however, and/or subject to a range of methodological limitations. The first study presented in this thesis aimed to investigate whether children with social anxiety disorder, other anxiety disorders and nonanxious children differ in terms of their autonomic arousal at rest and in response to stress, taking account of various methodological shortcomings of previous studies. Results showed limited evidence for autonomic dysregulation in anxious versus nonanxious children. These findings were contrary to expectations on the basis of psychophysiological models. This may suggest however, that it is how children interpret their physical symptoms that is particularly important in relation to childhood anxiety disorders, and social anxiety disorder in particular. Past research has suggested that negative interpretation of physical symptoms and/or inferring threat from a situation on the basis of one's own physical experience, is associated with high levels of anxiety in children. Furthermore, theories of social anxiety disorder suggest that socially anxious individuals in particular interpret their internal physical symptoms in a negative way which influences their view of themselves as a social object. The second study presented in this thesis investigated these hypotheses among children with social anxiety disorder, other anxiety disorders and nonanxious children, again taking into account methodological limitations of previous studies. Children with social anxiety disorder were more likely than both other groups to assume that physical symptoms are associated with negative consequences, and to view ambiguous situations as anxiety provoking, whether physical information was present or not. The findings highlight that cognitive characteristics may be particular pertinent in the context of social anxiety disorder in childhood, and may be a potential target for treatment.

Narrative analysis, a form of narrative inquiry, uses stories to frame and describe how people interpret and construct the meanings of their lives. Stories connect us with our past, help us to understand our present, and offer vision of possible futures. People live and create their lives through the stories they see, hear, tell, internalize, and hope for. The interpretation of narrative is not about certainties or standards, but rather about the multiplicity of perspectives and possibilities that can be constructed to make experience understandable. Critical interpretation of narrative can thus be a transformative process; a process being so crucial to the health of adolescent girls in Western culture. This study explores how four adolescent girls, and one researcher, together, interpreted and constructed the meanings of their bodies. The journey connects the researcher's struggle to find more democratic and empowering forms of inquiry, with the stories four eighth grade girls, diverse in race, social class, religion, and skin color, tell about how they experience and see their bodies in culture, in relation to others, and as them selves. All four girls are learning to create and desire an "image" of an ideal woman, and thus are beginning to objectify their bodies to be "looked at" by others. Image was a predominant interpretive frame for constructing meaning of the body for all four girls. Yet race, particularly visual racial representations, was also a predominant interpretive frame for the two African American, and one African American-Indian girls.

One of the main reasons that students struggle as they transition from arithmetic to algebra in the middle grades is that they fail to develop the appropriate understanding of the equal sign. Previous research has suggested that students need to move past an operational understanding and develop a relational understanding of the equal sign in order to work with algebraic equations successfully. Other research has suggested that the way that we interpret and utilize the equal sign is based on three main factors: multiple meanings of the equal sign, equation types, and structural conventions. This study extends both areas of research by analyzing two middle grade curricula and looking for what meanings, equation types, and structural conventions appear in both teacher and student materials. The study confirms that students are exposed to three main meanings of the equal sign in the middle grades. The study also describes which meanings of the equal sign are associated with particular equation types and the frequency with which these equation types appear throughout the 7th and 8th grade curricula. Study findings can be used to inform instruction, as they delineate the factors that are attended to while making sense of the equal sign in the middle grades.

Heat exchangers (HXs) play a critical role in various energy systems, which can largely influence their overall efficiency. Most recently, the interest in the topology optimization (TO) for heat transfer problems is growing rapidly, which can derive innovative thermal designs. Therefore, the present thesis investigates the utility of the density-based TO for dual-flow HX unit with narrow design domain, along with CFD (computational fluid dynamics) and experimental verifications. A convergent-divergent (C-D) design of fins is acquired using a topology generator (TG), of which efficacy can be proven by the CFD simulations, despite an identified deficiency in the velocity field of the TG-derived topology. Furthermore, upon the resolution of this deficiency, a new topology has been acquired by allocating the generated solids in proximity to the adiabatic boundaries for maximizing the thermo-hydraulic performance of the HX unit with moderate conductive material. High fidelity numerical approaches are employed to examine the efficacy of this new design through a comparative analysis with a benchmark case, and experiments are conducted to validate the numerical results. Both numerical and experimental approaches demonstrate that the TO-derived HX unit has the best thermohydraulic performance, reflecting its feasibility in practice. Furthermore, detailed physical interpretations are delivered to analyze the underlying physics behind the obtained topologies

Deng, Xinping. "Texture analysis and physical interpretation of polarimetric SAR data". Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/396607.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
This thesis is dedicated to the study of texture analysis and physical interpretation of PolSAR data. As the starting point, a complete survey of the statistical models for PolSAR data is conducted. All the models are classified into three categories: Gaussian distributions, texture models, and finite mixture models. The texture models, which assume that the randomness of the SAR data is due to two unrelated factors, texture and speckle, are the main subject of this study. The PDFs of the scattering vector and the sample covariance matrix in different models are reviewed. Since many models have been proposed, how to choose the most accurate one for a test data is a big challenge. Methods which analyze different polarimetric channels separately or require a filtering of the data are limited in many cases, especially when it comes to high resolution data. In this thesis, the L2-norms of the scattering vectors are studied, and they are found to be advantageous to extract statistical information from PolSAR data. Statistics based on the L2-norms can be utilized to determine what distribution the data actually follow. A number of models are suggested to model the texture of PolSAR data, and some are very complex. But most of them lack a physical explanation. The random walk model, which can be interpreted as a discrete analog of the SAR data focusing process, is studied with the objective to understand the data statistics from the point of view of scattering process. A simulator based on the random walk model is developed, where different variations in the scatterer types and scatterer numbers are considered. It builds a bridge between the mathematical models and underlying physical mechanisms. It is found that both the mixture and the texture could give the same statistics such as log-cumulants of the second order and the third order. The two concepts, texture and mixture, represent two quite different scenarios. A further study was carried on to see if it is possible to distinguish them. And higher order statistics are demonstrated to be favorable in this task. They can be physically interpreted to distinguish the scattering from a single type of target from a mixture of targets.

The author analyzes a number of key problems of modern physics and cosmology, offers original interpretations and solutions, and also discusses the prospects for the development of science in the context of attempts to create a "theory of everything". The monograph pays special attention to the physical theories of the multiverse, the new principles of scientific knowledge resulting from these theories, and the connection between consciousness and concrete physical reality. It is intended both for those who are just discovering the world of philosophy of science in the most fundamental field — physics, and for specialists who are professionally engaged in the topic and are interested in the most relevant research.

Unsteady aerodynamics is becoming more and more important for future compressor improvements. It has to be taken into account to reduce the amount of uncertainties for increasing the performance. Uncertainties regarding unsteady blade row interaction are difficult to approximate due to the complex flow phenomena and the high computational effort to evaluate these phenomena. The optimal axial gapping for transonic compressors is particularly difficult to define. A wide range of axial gappings for two different state of the art compressor front stages (F-class and DLR Rig250) have been simulated to understand the underlying physics and to derive design rules for the optimal axial gapping. The incidence angle reduction due to shock induced vortices has not jet been fully investigated. Predicting the exact vortex trajectory in the rotor passage would be a critical step in assessing this reduction in incidence angle. A function to predict the deviation compared to the steady state compressor performance is usefull for future design processes.

The presented study demonstrates the enormous potentials of translating mathematical expressions into their relevant physical meanings. In the past, such translations have proven capable of explaining the cause(s) of phenomena, which seemed to defy all principles of common sense. In other cases, they were able to rectify deeply rooted misconceptions, which haunted the engineers for many decades. Among others, they have revealed the need for revising everything what has been done in the last eight decades in relation to the head developed by an impeller. All the above conclusions are here supported by actual case histories from past experience. The discussions presented in this study relate directly to the design of centrifugal and other rotodynamic pumps. However, there exist strong indications, that such translations may prove equally useful also in other fields of engineering.

Road design is a complex, time-consuming, and very responsible process. To develop a high-quality and viable road project, it is very important to start with an accurate geological investigation. In situ tests can provide a number of advantages over the traditional drilling, sampling and laboratory testing approach used in many geotechnical projects. However, like all tests, in situ tests also have a number of limitations. Although all probing methods are similar, each of them gives slightly different results. The aim of this work was to analyse and compare the interpretation results of soil layer physical-mechanical properties obtained with different in-situ test methods and to find out how the obtained results affect the development of constructive solutions from the safety point of view.

Resumo:
The Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) covers a large part of southern Saskatchewan and hosts many resources such as critical mineral deposits (i.e. potash, helium and lithium) as well as oil and gas reservoirs and is also targeted for deep CO2 storage projects. There is also growing interest in the groundwater resources, the geothermal potential and hydrogen recovery potential. These applications require knowledge of the subsurface geology such as formation thickness and depth, relationships with adjacent formations or unconformities and ultimately, distribution of physical properties within the basin. 3D geological models can provide this knowledge since they characterize the geometry of subsurface geological features. In addition, they can be used as a framework for fluid flow simulation and estimating the distribution a variety of properties. The 3D geological model presented in this report consists of 51 geological units of which, 49 are stratigraphic units spanning from Cambrian Deadwood Formation at the base of the sequence to Upper Cretaceous Belly River Formation at the top, plus the undivided Precambrian and a preliminary Quaternary unit. The model is cut by 7 major regional unconformities, including the base of the Quaternary sediments. The regional model was constrained using oil and gas well data interpretations, provincial scale bedrock geology maps and knowledge from the previously interpreted areal extent of the Phanerozoic strata. A hybrid explicit-implicit modelling approach was employed to produce the 3D geological model of the WCSB in Saskatchewan using Gocad/SKUATM geomodelling software.

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New Orleans District (MVN), tasked the US Army Engineer and Research Development Center (ERDC) with assessing the condition of a grouted scour hole located at the southeast wall of the Old River Low Sill Structure (ORLSS) at the Old River Control Complex (ORCC) using noninvasive techniques, such as geophysical surveys and physical models. This special report (SR) combines a scientific literature synthesis of previous research with further geologic interpretation as a first step in the overall task assigned by MVN. The results discussed in this SR will be used to inform the interpretation of geophysical surveys, construction of physical models, and input for the slope stability analyses.

Oct. 07 2019 – Oct. 10, 2019 Kiel (Germany) – Kiel (Germany) MNF-Pher-110The main purpose of the ALKOR cruise AL529 was the training of students in observational techniques applied by physical oceanographers. The students who participated in the trip attend the module "Measurement Methods of Oceanography" which is offered in the Bachelor program "Physics of the Earth System" at CAU Kiel. During the AL529 the students were instructed in instrument calibration and in the interpretation of measurement data at sea. In addition, the students had the opportunity to learn about working and living at sea and to explore and study the impact of physical processes in the western Baltic Sea, the sea at their doorstep. The observations show a quasi-synoptic picture of the hydrography and currents in the western Baltic Sea. Twice-repeated hydrographic and current sections across the Fehmarn Belt show well the short time scales where significant changes occur. A zonal section along the deepest topography, from about 10°40'E to 014°21'E, shows very nicely the two-layer system of outflowing low salinity and inflowing North Sea water. A bottom shield anchorage shows the currents in the water column and the near-bottom temperature and salinity variations in the Fehmarnbelt area.

The article discusses the possibility of using the technological advantages that appear in connection with the discovery of the physical essence of Time and new interpretation of the structure of space in the form of space-time quanta. One of the problems that can be successfully solved on the basis of the new physical model is the problem of establishing the true nature of gravity. The solution to this problem is directly related to the implementation of the idea of unsupported motion based on the interaction in a certain way of the created asymmetric interference structure of longitudinal waves with the natural structure of spatial frequencies.

The Heisenberg uncertainty principle is one of the cornerstones of quantum mechanics. The modern version of the uncertainty principle, deals not with the precision of a measurement and the disturbance it introduces, but with the intrinsic uncertainty any quantum state must possess, regardless of what measurement is performed. Recently, the study of uncertainty relations in general has been a topic of growing interest, specifically in the setting of quantum information and quantum cryptography, where it is fundamental to the security of certain protocols. The aim of this study is to analyze the concepts and fundamental physical constants in terms of achievements of modern theoretical physics, they search for adequate and useful analogues in the socio-economic phenomena and processes, and their possible use in early warning of adverse crisis in financial markets. The instability of global financial systems depending on ordinary and natural disturbances in modern markets and highly undesirable financial crises are the evidence of methodological crisis in modelling, predicting and interpretation of current socio-economic conditions.
