Abstract: This article aims to discuss the relation between Philosophy and Literature. Based on supposed similarities and discrepancies, it is investigated if there is an essential distinction concerning them. For such, some arguments elaborated by Antonio Cicero, on his essay Poesia & Filosofia, are analyzed. Antonio Cicero sustains that philosophical ideas are secondary to the literary composition, whose aesthetic value is acquired by the way those ideas are expressed and not by the ideas themselves. Moreover, in Philosophy, the act of writing is no more than an instrument to convey the philosophical thought. This instrumental role of discourse in philosophical works allows us to shed new light into Pierre Hadot’s conception of Philosophy as essentially a way of life. Thus, it will be proposed that the distinction between Philosophy and Literature should be rethought at a level that is deeper than the discursive one, as suggested by Antonio Cicero. The representation of Philosophy as a way of life indicates that the distinction between Philosophy and Literature is not a case of how each one articulates their levels of content and expression. Actually, it concerns the peculiar role of discourse in both of them. Some ultimate considerations on the very nature of the philosopher and of the writer or poet as well follow that existential distinction. Keywords: philosophy; literature; philosophy as a way of life.

The author views the work of A.I. Solzhenitsyn through the prism of the Russian self-comprehension specific features, namely the triunique approach to solving the most fundamental and deep problems that people are concerned with. Such approach determined by Christianity and confession of the Holy Trinity envisages the existence of three fundamentals in a human being: personality, human nature (essence) and vitality. The author assumes that human creative work in general has this triunique structure and uses this approach when analyzing the creative legacy of the writer.

Philosophy
Ph.D.
My goal in this dissertation is to shed light on a practice in printed literature often overlooked in philosophy of literature. Contemporary works of literature such as Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves, Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad, and Irvine Welsh’s Filth each make artistic use of the features specific to printed literature such as font and formatting. I show that, far from being trivial aberrations, artistic use of font and formatting has a strong historical tradition going back to the Bucolic poets of ancient Greece. When these features deviate from traditional methods of inscription and perform some artistic function within the work, they are artistically significant features of the works themselves. The possibility of the artistic significance of these features is predicated on works of printed literature being visually mediated when one reads to oneself. All works of literature are mediated by some sense modality. When a work of printed literature is meant to be read to oneself, it is mediated by the modality of sight. Features specific to this method of mediation such as font and formatting can make artistic contributions to a text as well. Understanding the artistic significance of such features questions where we see literature with respect to other art forms. If these features are artistically significant, we can no longer claim that works of printed and oral literature are both the same performative art form. Instead, philosophy of literature must recognize that works of printed literature belong to a visually mediated, non-performative, multiple instance art form separate from the performative tradition of oral literature.

This dissertation presents an account of fictional discourse which is teleological. According to it, questions about what is said in fiction and how it ought to be said are answerable in terms of the goals and methods belonging specifically to fiction-making as a practice. Viewed in such a way, it is argued that the incompleteness of fictional discourse and its apparent tolerance of inconsistency are distinctive of it. Moreover, it is argued that there is a sense in which one can produce true statements in fiction without thereby committing one self to the thesis that words made use of in fiction are endowed with reference. Throughout the dissertation, the view espoused in it is contrasted with rival positions on the issues of what fiction is about, and whether it can be true. It is argued that a teleological account of fictional discourse can present a coherent alternative to these.

This thesis is an examination of transformative effects of literature on environmental identity. The work begins by examining and expanding the Deep Ecology concept of identification-with-nature. The potential problems with identification through direct encounters are used to argue for the relevance of the possibility of identification-through-literature. Identification-through-literature is then argued for using the hermeneutic and narrative theories of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur, as well as various examples of nature writing and fiction.

Drawing different people with unique tastes into relationships with one another, the dinner table acts as an anchor for the human community. Though a daily practice for most, can we mark one meal as being more significant, or more influential, or more artistic than another? While we may not consciously realize the forces at work while attending a dinner ourselves, examining the retelling of the shared human experience with meals and meal preparation allow us to analyze more objectively the multi-faceted meanings behind the event. One way in which to do this is through examining the role that mealtime has played in literature. Virginia Woolf's novel, To the Lighthouse, Isak Dinesen's short story Babette's Feast, and Frances Osbourne's biography Lilla's Feast explore the unique human transformation present as their heroine hostesses go beyond simply feeding to truly cater to their guests. Although three very different narratives, the works share the same heart as their presentation of grandiose meals, creative spirit, mystical energy, and ultimate human transcendence express the unique power each hostess has to create warmth in even the coldest of homes.Yet, what about each hostess' artistic, culinary masterpieces, their mode of self-expression, allow those who partake in their creations to better themselves? Can the meal, like art, do anything for the soul? Our psyches can be affected by the ritual act of dining. Through reflection on the communal culinary experience, as presented to us in ready-to-analyze literature, we may almost spiritually experience the art and its encouragement of the perfectibility of our own human natures

Photographic picturebooks appear to have a special relationship to reality. In contrast to paintings and drawings, photos are often said to convey true and objective information about the world. Drawing on recent work in picture theory and the philosophy of pictures, the question is posed as to what extent this general picture is correct. This chapter contributes to the theoretical debate by analyzing The First Picture Book (1930) by Mary Steichen Calderone and Edward Steichen (phot.), viewed as a photographic archetype. Moreover, the differences to The Second Picture Book (1931) by the same authors are worked out. The main thesis of this chapter is that photographic early-concept books serve the purpose of implicitly teaching children about the representational nature of pictures. This is the basis for children’s understanding of picturebooks in general.

AbstractThis book chapter explores the utilization of an ontology of disaster images in the design of a decision support system for intervening in prevention or reconstruction efforts following events such as earthquakes, floods, and even fires. Grounded in philosophy, ontology in computer science relies on taxonomies, which are classifications of concepts used to facilitate object-oriented programming. To this end, existing collections of disaster images have been analyzed based on relevant literature. The objective here is to map the perception of disasters across different groups, including experts, the passive public, and actively affected individuals. These stakeholders play a crucial role in decision-making within a participatory planning framework, with the most advanced form being strategic planning. This approach offers an alternative to traditional urban regulatory and landscape planning. Urban planning and land use are essential considerations for non-structural disaster prevention interventions, particularly in areas where urban and wildland environments intersect. In such contexts, the coexistence of human settlements and forests in urban settings emphasizes the dual nature of forests as both natural heritage and a domain that calls for nature-based solutions.

Abstract The celebrated opposition between philosophy and poetry in the De rerum natura can to an extent be rephrased in terms of an opposition between the differing reading practices of two interpretative communities. The features that we find in the work are determined not by its supposed intrinsic nature, but by what we look for in it. The frontier between the ‘philosophical’ and ‘literary’ traditions is not itself, of course, timeless, and how close or distant they are from each other will depend on the nature of the philosophical or literary-critical positions adopted by readers as well as on the general intellectual climate.

On Nature is a poem as well as philosophy. The different parts of the poem deny motion, assert motion, offer abundant metaphorical motion. The prominent opposition between motion and immobility is both philosophical and poetic; it differs from, and relates to, verbal and philosophical clashing in Heraclitus. Parmenides’ language presents a further clash between the traditional and the new (Homeric poetry, not prose, but turned in startling directions). The image of the chariot ride has both mythological and contemporary resonance. Most of what remains from the poem is discussed in detail, including: the narrator’s ride towards the unnamed goddess, the two roads of inquiry, a third road wandered on by bewildered two-headed mortals, the revelation of unmoving reality with metaphors of motion, the wandering of the moon (in the world as seen by opinion). These present: arresting combinations of abrupt obscurity and speed, of intellectualism and mythology; a satirical vision of Heracliteans; multiple levels of motion and non-motion in challengingly opaque argument; inferior and superior modes of movement in heavenly bodies. The contrasts involving motion go beyond movement and immobility to wandering and firmly purposeful action. The narrator’s individual motion is enhanced by a group (goddesses) and opposed to groups (mortals and Heraclitean mortals). The treatment of motion is doubly vital to the philosophical poem.

Considering the fact that construction and exploitation of buildings have a significant impact on the pollution of the environment, one of the primary tasks of architectural and construction sector is to solve the increasingly evident ecological imbalance with their doctrine or at least to alleviate it. Biomimicry represents a retroinnovative architectural concept that bases its philosophy of adapting to modern living on imitation of natural phenomena and processes. This way, biomimicry becomes methodological approach to sustainable architecture and urbanism. Considering the fact that the design of many objects in architecture is often inspired by shapes from nature, the aim of this paper is to contribute through the analysis of available literature and case studies elucidating the imoprtance of biomimicry and its potential to initiate a regenerative approach in architecturally sustainable ecodesign. Both (un)known and innovative ideas aimed at creating sustainable facilities will be presented in this paper. The highlighted thing will be the importance of building in harmony with nature without disturbing its balance, as well as the fact that nature is the best guide to a sustainable future.

混 (hùn, “primordial chaos”) is one of the most complex and multi-aspect concepts in Chinese philosophy. This category was fully developed in the Taoist texts, dating back to the 4th–3th centuries BC. Taoist philosophers interpreted the concept not just as the core of cosmogony, but also as the basis of all ethical and socio-political concepts. In Taoist texts all the meanings are distinctly positive and opposed to the concept of 乱 (luàn, “disorder”), which means destruction of the original chaotic (i. e., holistic) nature of the universe. To determine how this concept transpire in traditional Chinese culture and to what extent it is still considered to be positive, the author analyzed the usage of the word in the four great classical novels: Water Margin, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West and Dream of the Red Chamber.

It is installed that the writer’s mythopoetics is characterized by a special attitude to a word as a philosophem accommodated a complex of ideas and views. The author’s Christian ideas, the mythologization of nature are reflected in the language, in the image of the word. Research methodology is a general research strategy that defines how research should be carried out. It includes a system of beliefs and philosophical assumptions that shape the understanding of the research questions and underpins the choice of research methods. Additionally, research methodology is an integral part of any research and helps to ensure consistency between chosen tools, techniques, and underlying philosophy. Therefore, this article shows the perspectives to choose the most effective methodology to increase the inclusion of marginalised communities during the post-disaster phase in Sri Lanka. A systematic literature review comprising of 61 articles adopted as the best-suited methodology for this research. The philosophical position of this research is interpretivism, whereas the abductive approach is utilised for theory development. Hence, more than one qualitative data collection method is used, and this research adopts a multi-method qualitative approach. Semiotics is the study of symbol systems, first proposed at the beginning of this century by the Swiss linguist Saussure, the American philosopher and founder of the philosophy of pragmatism Pierce. Semiotics is the study of the theory of symbols, and its scope of study involves the nature, characteristics, and meaning of the symbols of things, as well as the relationship between symbols and human beings. Design is a discipline closely related to "meaning", so the theory of semiotics is bound to have a strong guiding effect on design. Objectives This paper mainly researches the application of Semiotics in design by answering the following three questions: (1) Which countries and institutions are the application subjects of Semiotics in design? (2) What are the hotspot research topics of Semiotics in design? What are the future frontier trends? (3) What are the topics and paradigms of Semiotics in design high-impact literature research? Methods This paper uses the methods of bibliometrics and information visualization. To obtain more rigorous and comprehensive data indicators, VOS viewer and Cite Space (two pieces of bibliometric visualization software) were used to draw a map of scientific knowledge such as cooperative countries co-occurrence network, keywords co-occurrence clustering network and reference co-citation clustering network so as to conduct an empirical analysis on the retrieved data. In this paper, the Web of Science database is selected to retrieve the journal and paper data related to Design semiotics. In order to ensure the authority and research value of literature data, only SCI, SSCI and A&HCI were selected as the search source, with (Topic= (" semiotics ") AND Title= ("design")) as the search criteria and an unlimited time span. Finally, 407 retrieved papers published from 2000 to 2023 were exported as TXT files in the format of "fully recorded and cited references" to generate a visual knowledge map for quantitative analysis. Results (1) The output of papers related to design semiotics is generally on the rise, with the main output countries are China, Brazil, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Australia. Among them, China has the largest share of relevant research volume, indicating that China attaches great importance to research in this field and has a wide range of application areas. In addition, Research related to design semiotics is distributed, i.e. many schools and organizations are doing related research, but there are no very prominent institutions yet. (2) Nowadays, the research hotspots of Design semiotics include Computer Science, Engineering, Education Educational Research, Social Sciences, Business Economics, etc., which are mainly applied to "Provide a semiotic methodology primarily for problem solving", thus demonstrating its theoretical value. We can see that the combination of design semiotics with other approaches mainly involves sensory experience and cognitive science, user interface design, affective design and psychology, making design semiotics an interdisciplinary property.(3) At present, a bulk of influential and highly-cited literature on Design semiotics has been generated. For example, some literature has examined Gender and design cultures in information and communication technologies. Some literature has examined the Semiotic Approach to Information Systems Design. They constitute the classic cases and knowledge base of the application of Design semiotics and provide a research basis for the subsequent application of Design semiotics.

The efficiency of a turbine stage is impacted by a number of factors such as the component design philosophy, operating environment, leakage flow and its interaction with the main gas flow path. When looking at improving a turbine stage performance, there is a natural tendency amidst the designers to look into the factors listed above. Every engine manufacture has a unique style of component design philosophy and hence there are fewer opportunities to radically change the design. On the other hand, the operating environment or operating conditions are usually becoming more challenging. Hence, component designers typically look for opportunities to reduce the leakage or to reduce the losses due to interactive effect of the leakage with the gas path. The rim seal flow and its interaction with the gas path has been of interest for the past few decades and many studies have been carried out to understand the impact of cavity geometry, leakage flows and the ingestion of the hot gas into the rim seal cavities. The rim seal cavities functionally act as a buffer cavity to dilute and dampen the effect of the hot gas ingested into the secondary air flow path and to prevent the discs from being exposed to ingested hot gas. The successful function of the rim seal cavity depends on multiple factors like rotor-stator axial clearance, cavity volume, cavity shape, cavity approach to the gas path and its interface, in addition to the leakage flow into the main flow path. The present paper aims at providing a review of a typical rim seal cavity used in the High Pressure Turbine based on systematic CFD studies of the rim seal cavities. While the paper does not present validation data for the approach, the authors attempt to provide references to specific design aspects that are already available in the literature, which are usually less noticed.

The paper focuses on the interlacement of literary and iconographic elements by displaying an innovatory philological and stylistic approach, from a comparative perspective, in thematizing multilingual translational and adaptive aspects, ranging across Bernard Berenson's diaristic and epistolary corpus, in conjunction with his works on Italian visual culture. This interweaving gives occasion to the elaboration of multilinguistic textual influences and their verbo-visual artistic representations deduced from his innovative interpretative readings in the domain of world literature in modern times. Such analysis of the discourse of theoretical and literary nature, and of the pictoricity, refers to Bernard Berenson's multilingual considerations about canonical authors in English, Italian, French, German language, belonging to the Neoclassical and Romantic period, as well as to the contemporary era, as conceptualized in his autobiographical works, in correlation with his writings on Italian figurative art. The scope of this presentation is to discern and articulate Berenson's aesthetic ideas evoking literary and artistic modernity, that are infused with crucial notions of translational theory and conveyed through the methodology of close reading and comprising at the same time, in an omnicomprehensive manner, a plurality of tendencies intrinsic to social paradigms of cultural studies. Unexplored premises reflecting Berenson's vision of Italian culture, most notably of a visual stamp, will be analyzed through author's understandings of such adaptive translations or volumes to be subsequently translated in Italian, and through their intertwined intertextual applications, significantly contributing to further critical and hermeneutic reception thereof. Particular attention is drawn to its instancing in the field of Romantic literary production (Emerson, Byron), originally underscoring the specificities of each literary genre and expressive mode, of the narrative, lyric or theatrical nature, as well as concomitantly involving parallel notions as adapted variants within visual arts, and in such a way expressing theoretical views pertainable to Italian artworks too. Other analogous elements relevant to literary expression in the most varied cultural sectors such as philosophy, music, civilisational history (Goethe, Hegel, Kant, Wagner, Chateaubriand, Rousseau, Mme de Staël, Taine) are furnished, as well as the examples of the resonances of non-western cultures, with the objective of exploring the effect among readership bringing also to the renewal of Italian tradition.

Functionality is one of the key aspects of artifact models for design. A function of a device, however, can be captured in different ways in different domains or by different model-authors. Much research on functions has been conducted in the areas of engineering design, functional representation and philosophy, although there are several definitions and notions of functions. We view conceptualization of function is multiplicative in nature: different functions can be captured simultaneously from an objective behavior of an artifact under different teleological contexts of users/designers, or from different viewpoints (perspectives) of a model-author. Such differences become problematic for sharing functional knowledge among engineers. In this article, we attempt to clarify the differences of such perspectives for capturing functions on the basis of the ontological engineering. On the basis of a generalized model of the standard input-output model in the well-known systematic design methodology, we show descriptive categorization of some upper-level types (classes) of functions with references to some definitions of functions in the literature. Such upper-level ontological categories of functions are intended to be used as a reference ontology for functional knowledge interoperability. One of the two usages here is to convert functional models between different functional taxonomies. A functional term in a taxonomy is (ideally) categorized into a generic type defined in the reference ontology. It is widely recognized in the literature that such an upper-level ontology helps automatic “mapping discovery” which is to find similarities between two ontologies and determine which concepts represent similar notion. The reference ontology of function might have such an effect. Another usage of the reference ontology is to integrate fault knowledge into functional knowledge and automatic transformation of FMEA sheets. The designer can describe an integrated model of both functional knowledge and fault knowledge. Based on ontology mappings, automatic transformations of FMEA sheets can be realized. In this article, we discuss the detail of the definitions of the upper-level categories of functions ontologically. Then, we give an overview of usages and effects of the upper-level categories as a reference ontology for functional knowledge interoperability.

The article deals with the technology of visualizing fictional text (poetry) with the help of emoji symbols in the Emoji Maker platform that not only activates students’ thinking, but also develops creative attention, makes it possible to reproduce the meaning of poetry in a succinct way. The application of this technology has yielded the significance of introducing a computer being emoji in the study and mastering of literature is absolutely logical: an emoji, phenomenologically, logically and eidologically installed in the digital continuum, is separated from the natural language provided by (ethno)logy, and is implicitly embedded into (cosmo)logy. The technology application object is the text of the twentieth century Cuban poet José Ángel Buesa. The choice of poetry was dictated by the appeal to the most important function of emoji – the expression of feelings, emotions, and mood. It has been discovered that sensuality can reconstructed with the help of this type of meta-linguistic digital continuum. It is noted that during the emoji design in the Emoji Maker program, due to the technical limitations of the platform, it is possible to phenomenologize one’s own essential-empirical reconstruction of the lyrical image. Creating the image of the lyrical protagonist sign, it was sensible to apply knowledge in linguistics, philosophy of language, psychology, psycholinguistics, literary criticism. By constructing the sign, a special emphasis was placed on the facial emogram, which also plays an essential role in the transmission of a wide range of emotions, moods, feelings of the lyrical protagonist. Consequently, the Emoji Maker digital platform allowed to create a new model of digital presentation of fiction, especially considering the psychophysiological characteristics of the lyrical protagonist. Thus, the interpreting reader, using a specific digital toolkit – a visual iconic sign (smile) – reproduces the polylaterial metalinguistic multimodality of the sign meaning in fiction. The effectiveness of this approach is verified by the poly-functional emoji ousia, tested on texts of fiction.

Stock market prices are intrinsically dynamic, volatile, highly sensitive, nonparametric, nonlinear, and chaotic in nature, as they are influenced by a myriad of interrelated factors. As such, stock market time series prediction is complex and challenging. Many researchers have been attempting to predict stock market price movements using various techniques and different methodological approaches. Recent literature confirms that hybrid models, integrating linear and non-linear functions or statistical and learning models, are better suited for training, prediction, and generalisation performance of stock market prices. The purpose of this review is to investigate different techniques applied in stock market price prediction with special emphasis on hybrid models.

Muqtedar Khan’s Islam and Good Governance: A Political Philosophy of Ihsan is, above all, an expression of faith.[1] This does not mean that we should engage it as a confessional text — although it certainly is one at some level — or that it necessitates or assumes a particular faith positionality on the part of its reader. Rather, Khan seeks here to build a vision and conception of Islamic governance that does not depend on compliance with or fidelity to some outward standard — whether that be European political liberalism or madhhabi requirements. Instead, he draws on concepts, values, and virtues commonly associated with Islam’s more inward dimensions to propose a strikingly original political philosophy: one that makes worldly that which has traditionally been kept apart from the world. More specifically, Khan locates the basis of a new kind of Islamic politics within the Qur’anic and Prophetic injunction of ihsan, which implies beautification, excellence, or perfection — conventionally understood as primarily spiritual in nature. However, this is not a politics that concerns itself with domination (the pursuit, retention, and maximization of power); it is neither narrowly focused on building governmental structures that supposedly correspond with divine diktat nor understood as contestation or competition. This is, as the book’s subtitle suggests, a pathway to a philosophy of the political which defines the latter in terms of searching for the Good.

China is the subject of Western criticism for its supposed disregard of the rules-based international order. Such a charge implies that China is unilateralist. The aim in this study is to explain how China does in fact have a multilateral approach to international relations. China’s core idea of a community of shared future of humanity shows that it is aware of the need for a universal foundation for world order. The Research Report focuses on explaining the Chinese approach to multilateralism from its own internal perspective, with Chinese philosophy and history shaping its view of the nature of rules, rights, law, and of institutions which should shape relationships. A number of case studies show how the Chinese perspectives are implemented, such as with regards to development finance, infrastructure projects (especially the Belt and Road Initiative), shaping new international organisations (such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank), climate change, cyber-regulation and Chinese participation in the United Nations in the field of human rights and peacekeeping. Looking at critical Western opinion of this activity, we find speculation around Chinese motives. This is why a major emphasis is placed on a hermeneutic approach to China which explains how it sees its intentions. The heart of the Research Report is an exploration of the underlying Chinese philosophy of rulemaking, undertaken in a comparative perspective to show how far it resembles or differs from the Western philosophy of rulemaking.

This rapid review examines literature around Nature-based Solutions (NbS), what are NbS, the pros and cons of NbS, design and implementation issues (including governance, indigenous knowledge), finance and the enabling environment. The breadth of NbS and the evidence base means that this rapid review only provides a snapshot of the information available, and therefore does not consider all types of NbS, nor all sectors that they have been used in. Considering this limited scope, this report highlights many issues, some of which are that Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of NbS, Pros of NbS include the low cost compared to infrastructure alternatives; the flexibility in addressing multiple climate challenges; potential co-benefits such as better water quality, improved health, cultural benefits, biodiversity conservation. The literature also notes the cons of NbS including slow adaptation or co-benefits, very context specific making effectiveness difficult to measure and many of the benefits are non-monetary and hard to measure. The literature consulted suggest a number of knowledge gaps in the evidence base for NbS effectiveness including lack of: robust and impartial assessments of current NbS experiences; site specific knowledge of field deployment of NbS; timescales over which benefits are seen and experienced; cost-effectiveness of interventions compared to or in conjunction with alternative solutions; and integrated assessments considering broader social and ecological outcomes
