To expand understanding of imbricated journalism and high aestheticism at the fin de siècle, this essay examines Vernon Lee's journalism and slow essay serials, a form spread over space (viz., different periodicals) and marked by irregular temporal issue of installments before finding new cohesion when retroactively constructed as a book. Lee's prolific periodical publication, especially her aesthetic criticism, is rarely approached as journalism. Newly available letters and Lee's negotiations with editors clarify the occluded history of Lee's journalism and her slow essay serials, a distinctive serial form at the fin de siècle, which this article conceptualizes in closing.

In this study, three serials databases were used to identify core journals in rehabilitation and related areas. Simple strategies were used to search SERLINE (Serials Online, National Library of Medicine), Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory and SACHET (British Library serials database). Coverage of the journals identified by four secondary information services was then studied. These were Medline, Excerpta Medica, CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health) and CATS (Current Awareness Topics Services, British Library). The results confirmed and extended the findings of earlier work: the number of core journals in rehabilitation is very large and their coverage by information services is very selective. Of the services studied here, CATS seemed to be most comprehensive for the journals identified.

Serials are important sources of information to library users. This study examines the serials management in a Law library, the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS). Diverse resources aid research, learning and teaching, among these are serials. They feature as inaugural lectures, public briefings, reports, white papers, gazettes and other government publications, hazards, panels/commissions of inquiry, memoirs, findings, treaties, field trip’ reports, television or film series, body corporate statements of accounts, newspapers, conference proceedings. The role of UNESCO coupons in paying for foreign journals was briefly mentioned-though these are no longer sent to many Nigeria libraries. The compulsion for all serials editors to write to NLN for an ISSN to enhance the compilation of National Bibliographic Control, like the British Union Catalogue of Periodicals, and collective aim at ensuring a knowledge output consortia among all libraries to ‘save the bucks’ was also mentioned, this, so many of the knowledge industries do not comply with this statute, unfortunately. The paper discussed the management of serials which include: acquisitions, classification, storage and preservation. The study recommends the need for acquisitions policy reviews, staff skills, suggesting the employment of only possessors of library and information science qualifications in the libraries, preservation and conservation of serials via binding and pre-purchase quality assurance.

ARLIS/UK & Eire has developed a thorough and practical strategy regarding the national provision of art serials in libraries. The keystone of this strategy is the ARLIS Union List of Art Periodicals, shortly to appear in its fourth edition. Titles of new serials are noted in the ARLIS News-sheet. Data in the Union List facilitates co-operation between, and co-ordination of the holdings of, different libraries, and is used in particular to identify those libraries which are the only locations for specific titles. ARLIS is determined that all art journals covered by the major indexes and abstracts are accessible in the U.K. and Eire; at the same time, the attention of publishers of indexes will be drawn to serials which are not indexed. ARLIS is represented on the advisory boards of major indexing and abstracting services, and in addition has completed a survey of ‘in-house’ indexes maintained by different libraries. Further developments are likely to depend, not merely on the co-operative efforts of members and on co-operation with other bodies, but also on the availability of funds and, hopefully, of a researcher.

The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Library and Archives, founded in 1973, holds one of the largest collections of queer serials in the world. The more than 10,000 titles are mostly in paper, but formats have been evolving. Beginning in the 1980s, the ArQuives participated in small microfilming projects. Microfilming of the collection greatly increased in 2005, when Primary Source Microfilm (PSM) undertook a large project to film a portion of the collection, resulting in 211 reels devoted to international gay and lesbian periodicals and newsletters. The PSM project was later repurposed and expanded by Gale Cengage, beginning in 2015, and forms part of its Archives of Sexuality and Gender online product. This paper examines the evolution of the ArQuives’ serials holdings from paper to microform to digital formats and explores recent in-house digitization efforts and future prospects for expanding access to these materials.

The Bibliographie Bildende Kunst has come out annually since 1973. It records literature of various kinds about painting, graphic art, plastic art, architecture, applied art, book art, design, folk art, artistic photography as well as theory and history of art. The compilation comprises monographs, periodical essays and important contributions from the daily press. Every yearly volume contains an index of authors and an index of subjects. Every five years a cumulated index is published. Since 1973 the Bibliographie Illustrierte Bucher der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik has come out. It lists GDR publications containing artistic illustrations. Every yearly volume is made accessible by means of an index of authors and subject titles. Index cumulations are published every five years. In 1984 a list concerning the location of periodicals and serials about Fine Arts in libraries of the German Democratic Republic was published. It contains titles from the 18th mid-century onward up to the present, including information on the particular ownership of GDR libraries. In autumn 2000 funding was obtained to allow for greater progress on this critical research tool, extending the coverage of participating libraries and enhancing the bibliographical records. However the work of increasing the level of participation in the Union list has largely been taken forward by direct approaches to individual institutions and by July 2002 there will be over 60 participating libraries as well as fuller bibliographic citations.

The author discusses the findings of the bibliometric study of the national document flow (as presented in the RISC database) on the issues of open access to scientific and research information. The general volume of microflow made 1,076 publications of various types, including articles in periodicals and serials, as well as books, conference proceedings, reports, theses, and deposited manuscripts. The journal articles made the main bulk (74%) followed by the proceedings (20%). The dynamics demonstrates the upward trend though the growth rate is rather low.The publication dispersion in periodicals is characterized. In general, it can be described by Bradford – Vickery law. The most productive (core) journals with the greatest number of relevant publications are defined. All of them are not specialized publications. The subject areas are defined. The analysis of the first and second zone journals demonstrates that they belong to 19 subject headings of the State Rubricator of Sci-tech Information which evidences on the interdisciplinary character of the problem under study.

Purpose – The paper aims to demonstrate a method for creating an electronic resource management system (ERMS) from freely available open source tools. This system will help manage bibliographic data, holdings and statistical and financial data for electronic databases and periodicals. Design/methodology/approach – The paper demonstrates how to create a database and interface for managing serials and electronic resources using PHP and MySQL within a *AMP framework. Findings – By following this approach, libraries can maintain structured data regarding their electronic and print holdings with minimal expense and with flexibility that is not necessarily possible through large commercial products, while avoiding the burden of implementing a large, open source solution. Originality/value – While many products exist on the market, either commercial or large open source solutions, there is little documentation on how to create a small scalable ERMS. This paper attempts to demonstrate a method.

The current study focuses on the presence of the Italian classic authors Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio in the period from the National Liberation to the end of World War I. The reception scope after the National Liberation is actually hard to trace and some surprising findings might appear on the horizon, especially regarding the scattered in periodicals texts. The published translated books are not indicative of the reception range during the analyzed period and they constitute only a small part of it. A large number of works by the most popular authors reached the Bulgarian audience through translations published in periodicals, textbooks and anthologies. Moreover, a lot of translated works did not appear in specialized philological publications, but in the literary sections and serials of daily newspapers. As early as the first decade after the Liberation, the classics missing from the Revival catalogue of translated literature started to appear. The Bulgarian reader became acquainted with the sporadic works of authors studied at school like Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Torquato Tasso, Ludovico Ariosto, Carlo Goldoni, Vittorio Alfieri, Giacomo Leopardi and Ugo Foscolo. In the defined period, the classic authors were not among the most influential translated Italian writers for the Bulgarian audience during the epoch. This is evidenced by the limited distribution of Konstantin Velichkov’s translation of Inferno, which managed to attract the interest of only a small circle of intellectuals. A main reception factor is the taste of the reading audience, which predominantly in the postliberation conditions still lacked structured esthetic criteria and preferred more common and comprehensible literature.

Digital Victorian studies, as thefield might be called, has entered a new generation of endeavor. Of course, many older digital Victorian projects remain online and continue to be important resources for scholars working in a variety of areas. In the pantheon of the older projects we might include: The Victorian Web (Landow; 1987–2012), a long-standing project that presents an array of images and texts linked to the Victorian era as nodes in a complex network; the Rossetti Archive (McGann; 1993–2008), a comprehensive digital collection of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's poetry, prose, and visual art as well as diverse contextual materials; NINES (2003-present), a nineteenth-century digital resource aggregator that facilitates integrated searching across a variety of sites and that provides peer review for relevant scholarly projects; the Old Bailey Online (Hitchcock; 2003–15), a large-scale venture that, among other things, makes available digital images and fully searchable, structured text of the 190,000 pages that constitute the Old Bailey Proceedings; and Nineteenth-Century Serials Edition (ncse) (Brake; 2005–08), a rigorous edition of six nineteenth-century periodicals and newspapers that explores the issue of modeling nineteenth-century serials in digital form. Many other such projects might also be added. However, the rapid advance of web-based technologies has recently propelled the development of digital Victorian studies in multiple directions at once. The concurrent rise of digital humanities has also ensured that Victorian scholars now have ever more exciting options for creating and analyzing digital Victorian materials and ever more sophisticated questions for interrogating the process by which those materials are created.

The author discusses the results of scientometric assessment of Russian agricultural and forestry academic journals included into the RSCI database, HAC List and RCSI as of 2022. The essential bibliometrical data were obtained from the RSCI database. The serials selected for the analysis fall under the 68.00.00 index of the State Rubricator of Sci-tech Information (SRSTI).The author substantiates the validity of bibliometrical indicator of publication importance, namely the 5-year impact factor without self citation. He investigates into the journal information capabilities from the perspective of published articles and open access to RSCI database. The level-structured values accepted for ranging the impact factor (from minimum to maximum) included in RSCI, HAC, and RCSI, are provided; the average values make, correspondingly, 0.381, 0.470, and 0.623. The most significant scientific journals are revealed by their impact factor and SI, and by the number of published articles and accessibility via RSCI. The author emphasizes the drawbacks of HAC and RCSI resources, among them inclusion of low-cited and low SI journals. He also favors the proposal to develop the integrated method for journal ranging and, on this foundation, to build the national database of scientific periodicals.

What links the existing international surrealist movement—a network of groups who publish their essays and collective experiments in an array of print and online periodicals—to the 20th-century Surrealism of art history textbooks is, to a large extent, its periodical publishing practices. This article pays particular attention to the periodical rubric (defined as a heading or category under which a certain kind of text or image serially appears) and contextualizes its surrealist use within a broader poetics of “objectivation.” In Surrealism, objectivation is the creation of a “thing,” which is to say a form of doing or thinking that acquires a name and locus around which a social collectivity can coalesce. The article explores this process as it becomes manifest in the various rubrics used in surrealist periodicals past and present.

AbstractEpistolary periodicals associated with English coffee house culture have often been associated with Jürgen Habermas' model for the rise of the ‘bourgeois public sphere’. Habermas proposed this ultimately gave rise to the free articulation of public opinion and the emergence of democratic values. Written at a time of socio‐political upheaval, John Dunton's serial publications relied upon anonymous authorship, particularly his most famous periodical, the Athenian Mercury (1691–97), which pioneered the question‐and‐answer format and gave rise to many imitations. In the present era, we are witnessing democracy imperilled by the proliferation of AI‐driven ‘fake news’. This paper proposes that the origins of this phenomenon may be found in epistolary periodicals which normalized giving and receiving offence in print. The pernicious quality of anonymous print, free from personal accountability or consequences, embedded from its inception a fatal flaw in the project of constituting a democratic public sphere.

The article presents the main stages of the development of library and information education in the Republic of Kazakhstan in the second half of the 20th — beginning of the 21st century. The sources for this study were collections of archival documents, monographs, publications in periodicals and serials, conference materials and Internet resources, official documents, including regulatory documents. The author considers evolution of library education taking into account the principle of linking its development and theory and practice of librarianship with the socio-political and economic life of the country. The paper identifies socio-economic conditions and state policy in the field of library construction as the main factors determining the directions and specifics of transformation of the library education system. Much attention is paid to the work of higher educational institutions and their role in the formation of personnel potential of the library sector of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The author characterizes the system of advanced training of librarians, developed in the republic in the second half of the 20th century, and describes its goals, objectives, structure and the main ways and forms of advanced training. The paper presents the historical facts reflecting the achievements and problems in the field of staffing of libraries of the republic. The modern stage is distinguished by the rapid pace of development of science and technology, the increase in the volume of information produced and consumed by people, and raised requirements for the quality of qualification of library and information specialists. Currently, the number of state educational grants has increased in the country; libraries maintain link between science, education and practical activities; the decision has been made to develop the Concept for the development of librarianship in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The author concludes that changes in the society are the main stimulus for optimizing library and information education; and the development of education, the training of highly qualified library specialists contribute to the effective implementation of socio-cultural policy, the solution of urgent socio-economic problems and facilitate the increase in the intellectual and cultural level of society.

This study aimed to describe the probabilistic structure of the annual series of extreme daily rainfall (Preabs), available from the weather station of Ubatuba, State of São Paulo, Brazil (1935-2009), by using the general distribution of extreme value (GEV). The autocorrelation function, the Mann-Kendall test, and the wavelet analysis were used in order to evaluate the presence of serial correlations, trends, and periodical components. Considering the results obtained using these three statistical methods, it was possible to assume the hypothesis that this temporal series is free from persistence, trends, and periodicals components. Based on quantitative and qualitative adhesion tests, it was found that the GEV may be used in order to quantify the probabilities of the Preabs data. The best results of GEV were obtained when the parameters of this function were estimated using the method of maximum likelihood. The method of L-moments has also shown satisfactory results.

This paper analyzes the way in which women's interpretive communities are formed and the methodology of production of (feminist) knowledge. The analysis connects the results of contemporary studies of feminist periodicals/feminist studies of periodicals, and the project Srpkinja (Serbian woman) from 1913. The interpretation of the book Srpkinja starts from the assumption that it is a (serial) publication which contains autopoetic statements and hypotheses about magazines. This is, probably, the first case in the history of Serbian/Yugoslav periodicals of a serial publication that (systematically) describes the basic categories which are necessary for interpreting, creating and editing women/feminist periodicals. In this paper Srpkinja is analyzed as the first carefully conceived project based on the construction of women's networks, thanks to which one of the first women's interpretive community was formed.

The social, economic, intellectual, cultural, and material relations that comprise periodical encounters have been attended to in analyses that invoke the concept of the network, what Nathan Hensley has described as a ‘chain of visible or material interactions among human and nonhuman entities’. The affective dimensions of these relations, however, are neither material nor always visible, yet they are fundamental to all such interactions. This article argues that the periodical’s capacity to communicate, the contours, scope, and effects of that capacity, and in particular its genre traction, are everywhere underscored by a relationality that is charged with affect and emotions, shaped by what Raymond Williams famously described as ‘structures of feeling’. My focus on the haptic currents that drive periodical exchanges (taking examples from George Eliot at the <em>Cornhill Magazine</em>, Joseph Conrad in <em>Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine</em>, and James Joyce in the <em>Irish Homestead</em>) follows from important theorizations of the unique affordances of this ‘most time-oriented of print forms’ (Beetham). Affect, feelings, and emotive responses are messy and cannot be pressed into a discrete methodology, but when considering the open-ended, multi-textured, serial form that is the periodical, there is something to be gained, I suggest, from trying to understand the operations of affect, its openness, its aleatoric potential, and its emotion-based effects.

Purpose. The reputation of the satirical weekly Iskra is traditionally determined by the political context of the Russian Empire in 1860s. Despite the fact that in the first years of its existence, the publication attracted writers of various fractions, views, and convictions, Iskra was perceived as a radical magazine, “…another department of Sovremennik”. Moreover, Iskra’s defamations and attacks against provincial and capital officials, and writers have become an inte gral part of the everyday life of the 1860s. Individual articles and whole issues have been banned and censored, though this policy only promoted and strengthened the reputation of weekly. Later, reflecting the importance of the magazine, the Soviet literary criticism established a typological relationship between Iskra by Kurochkines brothers and the left-wing newspaper of the same name published by V. I. Lenin at the beginning of the 20th century. This article attempts to reinterpret Iskra, implying a “weakening” of the sociological and political aspects of interpretation in favor of the aesthetic ones.Results. The article put forward a hypothesis that publications such as Charivari, Punch, and Iskra can be considered from perspective of modern discursive practices: post-folklore (the phenomenon of variable text and multiple authorship), post-modernity (discrediting the classical heritage or its carnival rethinking) and post-irony (deconstruction of modern leaders of opinion, self-exposure). Based on the study of prosaic and poetic parodies and satire, graphic texts - cartoons and serials (comics), the author analyzes the specificity of the construction and presentation of Russian reality as an anti-world. The article contains fragments of prose and poetic feuilletons by D. D. Minaev, V. P. Burenin, and M. Stopanovsky, many of which are published for the first time.Conclusion. Iskra as a product of the polemical journalism of the Russian Empire in 1860s displayedan experience of a new aesthetics (a kind of anti-aesthetics), synthesizing schoolchildren (cartoons) and decadent subcultures (Baudelaire translations). Apparently, the 8000 subscribers included not only a radical and democratic reader but also a general audience, equally tired of the official tone of government periodicals and the moralizing of the progressive camp. Demonstrating Russian life as the so-called ‘antiworld’, Iskra proposed a version of “carnival liberation”, which was probably reflected in the poetics of many contemporaries: M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, N. S. Leskov, F. M. Dostoevsky. In this regard, the issue of post-folklore, post-modernism, post-truth, and post-irony on the pages of Iskra rather remained unresolved. However, the change in perspective, it seems to us, enables reinterpretation of the previously collected data, allowing us to give a new interpretation.

RESEARCH INTO OCCASIONAL DAILIES IN POLAND AFTER 2008In recent years scholars have become increasingly drawn to publications documenting the life of society. Manifestations of this growing interest include an international conference devoted to such publications and organised in October 2004 by the Institute of Library and Information Science, University of Wrocław. The participants discussed the subject of occasional dailies, unique documents somewhere between non-periodical and serial publications. Numerous papers devoted to such publications were written by Małgorzata Korczyńska-Derkacz, who in 2008 presented the state of research into occasional dailies and carried out their multifaceted assessment as source materials, using the data from the Central Catalogue of Polish Periodicals. The present paper complements and continues the research carried out earlier. The topics most frequently tackled by scholars include those devoted to specific titles, historical periods occasional dailies in the inter-war period, places of publication Lviv, Kraków, publishing institution or milieu firefighters, students, scouts, ethnic groups Jewish dailies. Few scholars have tackled dailies from the point of view of their untypical editorial and formal features periodical or non-periodical publication and the related problems with their formal and substantive description. The fact that occasional dailies have been incorporated into the collections of digital libraries and the growing number of bibliographic compilations, including Volume 16 of the Polish Bibliography 1901–1939 devoted entirely to such publications, stimulate the interest of historians of the press, linguists, sociologists, ethnographers, culture scholars, historians of social movements, politics and economy, historians studying the customs and traditions of various ethnic and professional groups, localities and education. They appreciate such publications as a unique source of historical and factual information lists of people, tables and plates, photographs, statutes etc..

Serials being important to students and researchers as they contain the most current and relevant information that can be used for academic and research purposes needs to be assessed periodically to determine if they are still relevant to the users. This study therefore examines the analysis of serials citations in graduate-students’ theses as a functional tool for effective management of serials in university libraries using theses submitted from 2013 to 2021 in Library and information Science of four government owned universities in eastern region of Nigeria as case in point. The study was meant to provide answers to three research questions which formed the guide while a descriptive survey design was applied with a population of 203 which stood as the total number of masters’ degree theses produced by the four universities within the period under study. The main instruments used in collecting data for this study were the researcher-designed checklists with which 8445 serials citations were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics of mode, mean and range and data presented in tables, charts and graphs using frequencies and percentile. The outcome of the study revealed that journals with 76% citations were the most cited against conference proceedings/reports with 20% and the least cited being government publications with only .5% citations. It was further established that multi authorship is the most cited authorship pattern in the graduates’ theses whereas the average age of serials cited were within the age bracket of 0 - 18. The conclusion drawn is that with the most cited type(s) of serials, serials titles, ages of serials and preferred authorship pattern known through citations analysis of serials in research reports, the university librarian is better placed as to knowing which serials to select, acquire and how to have them organized for easy accessibility and retrieval by users as well as the amount of money to be earmarked for their acquisitions which invariably will bring about prudent management of the library budget in this period of shrinking budget for academic libraries. The study therefore recommended among other things that for effective application of serials citations analysis as a functional tool for effective serial management, staff of serials unit most partner documentation unit as to ensuring proper citations analysis of serials submitted to the library by every department as this can be used as a guide for the unit to identify the core serials for selections, acquisitions and also as a guide for total serials collections maintenance.

In this analysis the author discusses the interplay between late nineteenth century readers and the first Lithuanian periodicals, proposing that the history of the Lithuanian press be seen as the writing of a single text. To interpret the reader-text relationship, the author draws on the concepts of Paul Ricoeur (who sees the text as offering a project for a possible world) and Rita Felski (who argues that recognition is a significant mark of the reader-text relationship) – their description of the interaction with the text and its restructuring of the reader’s world. The author posits that in this situation the collective authors of a text create a projection of the world and propose a way of being in it; as a result, the plots lived out by early readers who gradually became “heavy-handed scribes” become part of press history.Recovery of voice and the need for a sequel emerge as the most important motifs in the reader’s inscription into press history. Recovery of voice is related to melodramatic expression, whose characteristics are manifest in translations of the Polish author Maria Rodziewiczówna’s novels. The promise of a sequel is guaranteed by the means of the texts’ distribution – their serialization in magazines. This writer’s work appears as a modification of positivist attitudes and a recognition-based invitation to the reader to inscribe herself/himself into the text. Rodziewiczówna’s melodramatic narrative establishes the most common kind of recognition structure – rituals of moral address appear as narratives of self-discovery, encouraging the reader to become part of the sequel.

Abstract The article draws on recent conceptualizations of ›eventfulness‹ and ›narrativeness‹ in order to argue that the significance of a particular event during the Thirty Years’ War may be not only a product of historiographical narrativization, but the collective effort of contemporary news media. The battle of Lutzen (1632) illustrates how the weekly periodicals established a set of factual data from which broadsheets, pamphlets and serial chronicles could select and arrange information to construct the eventfulness of the battle.

This article introduces a rediscovered 1938 serial by Elizabeth Bowen ‘specially written’ for Home and Country, the monthly organ of the National Federation of Women's Institutes. It situates ‘Mystery at the Lilacs’ within the periodical culture of ‘ Home and Country’, paying particular attention to Bowen's engagement with the social and cultural debates that played out across its pages, and considers how Bowen's serial compares with her other contemporary literary projects. Far from being an aberration or curiosity, this serial overlaps thematically with Bowen's other interwar short stories. Self-reflexively concerned with the status of the writer in the community and preoccupied with the relationship between ‘high’ and popular culture, ‘Mystery at the Lilacs’ has much to tell us about Bowen's thinking about politics and culture in the interwar period.

The first stage in developing a task planning language for redundant manipulators is that of constructing an algorithm to produce a schedule of joint displacements for the specified task. This algorithm may be based upon the use of an inverse infinitesimal kinematic analysis for the majority of the path with a finite inverse analysis used to provide an initial joint configuration and periodically to correct for any joint errors that may have accumulated. Here, it is assumed that there is complete correlation and coherence of solutions between these analyses, otherwise problems, such as a lack of repeatability may occur. This may be accomplished by modelling the manipulator as an elastic system which permits the development of a task planning method by using analyses which are all mutually coherent. In this paper, the method is developed and demonstrated using a redundant manipulator that simultaneously avoids obstables, singularities and joint motion limitations. The task planning method and associated analyses are applicable to the general serial redundant manipulator with an arbitrary degree of redundancy.

We present a method for the read-out of five serially arranged SOI ring resonator-based biosensors at a speed of 3 Hz/sensor and a fixed wavelength of 1550 nm. The system uses the high thermo-optical coefficient of silicon by applying AC voltages to periodically heat up electrodes adjacent to each sensor. A time-division multiplex scheme allows the allocation of the measured optical output from the mutual spectrum to each specific resonator. We demonstrate our system by immobilizing two different antibodies (biotin and a hexa-His-peptide) at the surface of selected resonators and successfully showing the selective binding characteristics of analyte probing in a microfluidics supported experiments.

This paper will be concerned with the special affordances of periodical writing, taking the modernist little magazine The Masses as its example. This magazine was instrumentally involved in promoting sexual liberation and ‘sex radicalism’ in the United States of the 1910s, and I argue that the – contracted, serial, and contingent – structure of periodical publishing had an incisive impact on the ways in which the magazine responded to and transfigured the contemporary rhetoric of sexology. Focusing on the enactment of non-normative sexualities in the little magazine, I aim to show that the iterative and kaleidoscopic form of presentation yields effects that are different from the aesthetics of queer modernism as manifest in the ‘closed’ literary forms of the episodic novel or the short story collection. I will cast a close look at Floyd Dell's writing in the magazine to argue my case, and end with a reflection on (the publication history of) Sherwood Anderson's ‘Hands’.

A review of: Gallagher, John, Kathleen Bauer, Daniel M. Dollar. “Evidence-Based Librarianship: Utilizing Data From All Available Sources to Make Judicious Print Cancellation Decisions.” Library Collections, Acquisitions & Technical Services 29.2 (2005): 169-79. Objective – To apply the principles of evidence-based librarianship to the decision-making process regarding the cancellation of print serials. Design – Quantitative analysis of local and national data from various sources. Subjects – Data sources included 1249 current unbound print journals, 3465 Medline-indexed electronic journals, statistics from the Association of Research Libraries and American Association of Health Sciences Libraries, as well as traditional library statistics. Setting – The study was conducted in the Yale University’s Cushing/Whitney Medical Library located in New Haven, Connecticut U.S.A. Methods – Several sources were targeted for data. A three-month periodical usage study of the current issues of the library’s 1249 actively received print titles was undertaken. Excel-generated alphabetical listings of titles were used by shelvers to indicate, with a check mark, which issues were shelved during a specified week. The workflow was adjusted to ensure only items under study were counted. Signs asking patrons not to re-shelve journal issues were posted. Usage data were collected weekly and entered into an Excel spreadsheet where the total use of the journals was tracked. In-house circulation, photocopy, and gate count statistics were also used. In addition to the survey, SFX statistics for the library’s electronic journals indexed in MEDLINE (3465) were gathered during the same 3 month period covered by the print usage survey. MEDLINE was chosen as the delineating factor to ensure consistent subject coverage with the print journal collection. For perspective and trends, statistics from the Association of Research Libraries and the American Association of Health Sciences Libraries were considered. Main Results – Based on the study’s findings, 53% of the print collection (657 titles) received no use during the study period; 7.1 % (89 titles) were used more than once per month; and 1.28% were used one or more times per week. Further, only 10% (125 titles) of the collection represented 60.7% of the total print collection use. There was also a direct correlation between the drop in patrons coming to the library and the decrease in print periodical use. SFX statistics revealed that of the 3465 MEDLINE indexed titles 14.8% (513 titles) were not accessed at all and 10% of the journals represented 56.8% of all SFX usage. These results were consistent with statistics from the Association of Research Libraries and the American Association of Health Sciences Libraries. Conclusion – Titles that were used the most in print were also used the most electronically. Further, the study revealed that print journals are used only a fraction as often as their electronic counterparts. Indeed, in both the case of print and electronic journals the largest use came from a small number of subscribed titles. Print collection maintenance is more labour intensive and costly than electronic. Consequently, resources spent supporting 53% of the print collection that is not used seriously impacts efficiency. With constraints on acquisitions budgets, funding unused collections does not make sense. Examination of the print serial collection is only part of ensuring effective collections. As this study has indicated, unused electronic titles are also a drain on resources and further analysis of electronic packages is warranted.
