Texto completo da fonteSmells are at the center of social, scientific and literary concerns in France during the second half of the 19th century. Under the influence of an intellectual context torn between empiricism and neo-Platonic idealism, cultural representations of olfaction reflect both ancient concerns associated with a negative view of corporeality and epistemological practices that consider sensory input as the basis for all thought. Cultural and literary productions of the time reflect these ambivalent beliefs surrounding olfaction: while still deeply linked to corporeality, smells are often used to represent mysterious phenomena and complex scientific notions. As such, the construction of knowledge is no longer necessarily separated from the most common, even trivial, functions of the body. This study will therefore explore the immaterial, abstract, and even spiritual or metaphysical connotations associated with olfaction in French texts published from 1857 to 1914. Thanks to the theoretical input of cognitive studies, epistemocritics, poetics, the history of science and the history of perfumery, the thesis analyzes the rich olfactory culture of late 19th century France to show how odors and perfumes can be thought of as both objects and sources of complex, and even abstract, knowledge
