An international survey was conducted to assess theological higher education via distance learning as perceived by graduates of Trinity College and Theological Seminary's (Trinity) doctoral programs. The purpose of the study was to determine student-perceived strengths and weaknesses of Trinity's doctoral-level distance education theology programs. Also, the future of distance-learning mediated programs of theological higher education was speculated. A random sample of 400 doctoral recipients was selected from the population of 802 doctoral recipients who graduated from Trinity between the years of 1969 and March 1998. A mailed questionnaire was used to collect data. A total of 203 (50.0%) were returned. Frequency counts, percentage distributions, and chi-square tests of goodness-of-fit were employed to analyze the data. A profile of the modal type of student who would participate in theological distance education at the doctoral level was developed from the demographic variables queried. Responses to questions regarding respondents' educational experiences and coursework were solicited as well. Respondents identified five primary strengths of Trinity's distance education doctoral programs as: the convenience of the program; the immediate application of course content to personal and professional endeavors; the quality of education provided; the Biblical groundedness of the curricula, the materials, and the faculty; and the required reading and research. The three predominant weaknesses of Trinity's distance education doctoral programs as identified by program graduates include: the lack of interaction between students and faculty; the lack of regional accreditation; and course repetitiveness meaning that some courses offered repeated content from prior studies at a lower educational level. It was concluded that the future of theological higher education via distance learning is promising. Trinity has emerged as a dominant distance learning institution as a result of its continued exploration and advancements. However, Trinity and other similar distance education institutions must continually and consistently evaluate their programs and their students' expectations in an effort to transition theological distance education into the 21 st century.

"Organisation development is a planned, systematic process in which applied behavioral science principles and practices are introduced into ongoing organisations toward the goal of increasing individual and organisational effectiveness. " [French and Bell] This study describes and analyses the implementation of Organisation Development (OD) to an Anglican Church theological seminary, The College of the Transfiguration (Cott), in the Anglican Church of the Province of Southern Africa (ACSA). The origins of OD are business related, emerging in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Over the years, and recently in South Africa, OD has been applied in educational change initiatives. Unlike more traditional change strategies, OD promotes collaboration in organisational change processes through the inclusive participation of all stakeholders. This study is unique in the sense that OD is applied to an Anglican Church theological institution in Southern Africa. The goal of theological institutions, particularly Cot!, is to "form, inform and transform" (Cot! Prospectus, 2011) those who feel called to ordained ministry. Personal experience in this practice has confirmed that organisational emphasis is placed more on product than process; on results rather than the leadership and management of the organisation. This study was an attempt to introduce a process of planned change to such an organisational context. OD was introduced to The College of the Transfiguration in the form of action research using the Survey Data Feedback (SDF) strategy. Data gathered was interpreted and analysed, followed by action planning and implementation of agreed plans. The process had a positive impact on both stakeholders and the organisation despite the challenges associated with the unpredictable world of organisations. Ultimately, I propose tentative recommendations which could help Cott and other educational institutions to achieve long-term improvement in organisational leadership and management.

Theological training presupposes a mandate from God, and hence, a responsibility to him. The task of theological training is to nurture gifted leaders who are in turn to nurture other believers so that the church can effectively fulfil her missional mandate. The effectiveness of theological training must therefore be measured by how it enhances the practice of ministry in the work of its graduates. There exists a general concern about the way theological schools are preparing men and women for church ministry, with the church leadership feeling like graduates are not up to the task of ministering despite the theological training that they have been given in Bible Schools and Seminaries. This study begins by noting the limitations of the traditional training models of ministerial training. Then it examines the relationship between theological training and practical ministry with the purpose of addressing the fundamental problems that hinder theological training from becoming relevant. Ultimately the study establishes the need for a competent training program modelled after the New Testament discipleship model approach. This model integrates knowledge, being and practical training. The research focuses on the Pan Africa Christian College (PACC) alumni 1984-2004 as case study, with a view to establishing the relationship between training and practical ministry. At the same time, to establish the extent to which theological training at PACC has helped the graduates in their placement and practice of ministry. Finally, the study re-examines the scriptural basis for theological training and practical ministry and proposes a new model for that addresses common inadequacies in theological training. The research has established that there is a relationship between theological training and practice of ministry and that practical ministry can only be improved through enhancing theological training.

The purpose of this dissertation was to conduct an outcomes-based program evaluation for the Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola) campus of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. The study included one primary research question, with two subquestions. The primary research question asked to what extent students in the program developed moral judgment consistent with program goals of rehabilitating students and preparing them for effective ministry. The first subquestion asked whether statistically significant differences existed in the moral reasoning of students of different class years. The second subquestion asked whether statistically significant differences existed in the moral reasoning of students of different personality types. A cross-sectional study was conducted with students during the fall of 2005 using the Defining Issues Test 2 (DIT-2) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) instruments. All 101 program students were invited to participate in the study. To provide a benchmark for student scores, 30 Seminary faculty members were asked to complete the DIT-2. The student response rates were 94% for the DIT-2 instrument and 97% for the MBTI instrument. The response rate for faculty was 20%. After removing two outliers from the freshmen class, statistically significant differences were found in the principled moral reasoning scores (P scores) of freshmen (m = 22.146, sd = 12.002) and juniors (m = 30.274, sd = 13.165). No significant differences were found in moral reasoning based upon personality types. The mean P score among faculty members was 34.02 (sd = 15.25). In response to the primary research question, it was determined student scores did show moral reasoning differences consistent with the program goals. Conclusions reached in this study were limited because of the cross-sectional design. Further research is necessary before conclusions may be generalized beyond the sample.

This study investigated the contributions of John Nelson Darby to selected institutions of contemporary theological higher education. A qualitative approach to the investigation was employed. Archival foraging occupied a greater part of the research data and yielded rich returns as evidenced in the literature review. Purposeful sampling was also utilized. The faculty and administration of three institutions, Moody Bible Institute, Dallas Theological Seminary, and Emmaus Bible College, were mailed questionnaires comprising 22 questions to ascertain their opinions of Darby's contributions to their institutions. Of the 22 questions, 21 were of a Likert type scale offering 5 options: Strongly agree, Agree, Not sure, Disagree, and Strongly disagree; and 1 open-ended question. A response rate of 45% (N=27) was achieved. All results were statistically significant at the p=.05 level utilizing chi-square goodness-of-fit tests.

The Tainan Theological College and Seminary (TTCS) was established in 1876. I was started with the aim of teaching Christianity, developing Christian expertise, talents, and engaging in research. Most of those who were to be trained were pastors to serve thePresbyterian churches in Taiwan after graduating. After World War II, there was a shift in emphasis from the traditional training as was done in the West and the emphasis was now placed on the contextualizing of Theology. This was the initiative of the then Principal Shoki Coe and faculty, a move that was supported by the whole church. It was felt that theology had an important part to play in the life of the local churches especially for a religion that had originated in the West in the late nineteen century to be rooted and promoted within the context of Taiwan. Therefore, it was felt that Contextualizing theology was crucial to the life of the church. Shoki Coe started implementing the initial phase through research into the local context. Choan-seng Song who succeeded Shoki Coe as second Taiwanese Principal took the initiative to great heights. He set the direction of TTCS education towards the local theology in Taiwan. Since his publication of “Model Out of Egypt” there have been streams of publications related to contextual theologizing, for instance, Wang Cian-chi’s “Localized theology of Taiwan”, Huang Po-ho’s “Self-Determination” and “From Galilee to Taiwan.”, Wang Chung-yao’s “Liberation Theology”. It is very often that the responsibilities and influences a Christian has for his/her society and country are examined critically in the construction of local theologies and are emphasized especially on social matters (care). The Presbyterian Church has been interacting with Taiwan politics and society quite frequently. In the 70’s, the Presbyterian churches issued their statement and declaration towards human rights and the government strongly conveying their recognition of this island as an entity that was a sovereign independent country. This outlook can be credited to the initiative that TTCS took to localize theology. The “TTCS Incident” that took place in 1991 caused great harm to the school when many of its teachers who were strong advocates of localized theology left. In spite of the frustration arising from the incident, the contribution of the concept of theological education in context to the spread of the gospel has been acknowledged by Christianity far afield. Keywords: Tainan Theological College and Seminary (TTCS), TTCS incident, local theological education, contextualizing, localized theology.

A religious Non-Profit Organization (hereinafter “NPO”), as suggested by its name, is integrated based on the acknowledgement of religious belief. For sustainable operation and development, an effective fundraising model is crucial. Obstacles might occur; however, with this model, not only can fundraising process be smooth, but the mission and objective of a NPO can be maintained. The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (hereinafter “PCT”), as a NPO, is organized and regulated. Churches are built and founded throughout Taiwan through medication, preaching, education and social services. The establishment of Presbytery , synod ( and general assembly have made PCT organized and self-governed. At the same time PCT tries to spread out the religion, PCT not only encourages followers on the enhancement of ecumenical and social concerns but also on the re-building of the spiritual life of Taiwanese people. Hopefully, the entire society will be blessed through the commitment and growing of Christians. This study will focus on Taiwan Theological College and Seminary (hereinafter “TTCS”) and the purposes are as follows: 1 The operation and activities of a religious NPO, especially fundraising; 2 The methods of fundraising to be adopted; and 3 An in-depth discussion on planning fundraising and increasing its efficiency from the perspective of marketing strategy. The following methods will be adopted in this study: documentary analysis, semi-structured in-depth interview in corporation with environmental analysis, market segmentation analysis, marketing mix, and flow analysis. Not only will this study discuss the history, characteristics and fundraising strategies of a NPO, the marketing strategy of it will also be introduced. “On earth peace this life and eternity afterlife”is the reason why the donation goes to a religious group, other than other groups-this is the best reward that other groups cannot offer. Furthermore, no other NPOs can promise this reward but only a religious one. Religious belief is an important factor for donation, especially the followers of PCT. Their will to support and to give is remarkably greater than non-religious people. The efficiency of fundraising of a NPO will be affected by the followings: regulation, mission and objective of the organization, spiritual life of a follower, obedience of a follower to the regulation, faith, mutual consent among fellow workers, and the relationship between church and its followers. All of the above have shown that religious belief can be effective as a method for a NPO in fundraising.

Tainan Theological College and Seminary(TTCS) was established in 1869, which is the first Western-style university in Taiwan. Since the founding of the school, the purpose of education intention was to nurture ministers and engage talented staff who works in the church. The school which was not register by the Ministry of Education(MOE) until June 22, 2017, and also after the 149th anniversary of the school establishment, the numbers of alumni has reached more than 3,000 people today. In nowadays, “educational background” is still one of the necessary selection criteria for finding a job or further education, what is the status of the careers development and factors of affecting their employment of the alumni among Tainan Theological College and Seminary(TTCS) which is under non-recognition record of formal schooling in the country could be an important issue. This study aims at the in-depth interviews with nine alumni for each departments work in three different workplaces, and also invites two teachers from different departments who is currently teaching at Tainan Theological College and Seminary(TTCS) to participate in focus group interviews to collect qualitative datas. After text interpretation and analysis, the main propositions of alumni's career development and factors of affecting their employment are summarized as follows: (1)The alumni graduated from different departments have those different needs for recognition; (2)The original intention of dedication is the same, however the job application after graduation is the beginning of ordeal; (3)Even though the alumni get professional skills, but without educational background could be difficult to extend; (4)The support of religious beliefs could make most alumni optimistic to face the difficulties. So that, this study proposes three specific management recommendations: (1)The alma mater could adjust the curriculum according to the trend and different situations; (2)To establish a multiple pathway to facilitate alumni to return to the campus for extra credits; (3)To tutor the alumni have become cooperative partners in the workplace.

This research investigates the teaching and practice of moral formation at three theological education institutions in South Africa. The theological institutions, while acknowledging moral formation in their aims and teaching ethical theory, have difficulty developing and implementing a moral formation programme. Among the reasons for this are the complex nature of moral formation and the numerous and wide ranging expectations placed on the institutions. In this research, morality is described in terms of relationship with God, with self, with others in the Church and society and with the environment. The findings of the research suggest that the teaching and practice at the institutions that involve relationships are most effective for moral formation. Hence it is recommended that the institutions find ways to foster the students‟ relationship with God, with themselves, with others and with the environment. Modes of moral formation that involve thinking and knowledge are important, but so are those modes that encourage emotional development and character and spiritual formation. Through projects and assignments, students can be exposed to the harsh realities of life and opportunities created to reflect on these experiences in the light of faith. Practical suggestions such as encouraging students to pray, meditate, reflect, journal and study are made. Other suggestions are that lecturing staff make more use of participative teaching methods such as discussions, case studies and stories, including the stories of the students. The mentoring role of staff and the importance of the faith community are affirmed. These relational teaching methods and activities are easier to implement in a residential seminary than in a distance learning situation. In order to fully implement the relational aspects of a programme for moral formation, it would be helpful for the theological institutions to explore various forms of blended education and to develop partnerships and work with local churches.

The development of architectural styles for Christianity worship spaces began in the Middle Ages in Europe, and the Basilica church that has axial and central plans represents the style at the time. The activities of preaching and congregational singing were constantly performed in the churches, so the quality of indoor acoustics became an important design consideration. There were many corresponding studies exploring church acoustics in Europe. However, in Taiwan, only a few studies focused on the acoustical condition of the church. Therefore, this research studies the architectural styles of Tainan Theological College and Seminary Chapel (TTCSC), Wanchin Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (WBIC), and Holy Rosary Cathedral Minor Basilica (HRCMB) and obtains and documents the measured and simulated acoustical parameters of in the TTCSC and the WBIC. In fact, the measured and simulated acoustic conditions were used to study how the architecture features affect the sound quality distribution in the TTCSC and the WBIC. ISO 3382-1 has been used as the on-site acoustical measurement standard for background noise level and reverberation time, and Odeon acoustics software has been used to simulate the sound pressure level, the speech and music clarity, and the speech transmission index. The reverberation time between the on-site measurement and the simulated model was validated by using linear regression and correlation methods. These three churches in Taiwan were built based on Basilica style with an axial floor plan, because their chancels with the apses, altars, naves and side aisles separated by columns were identified as the early Basilica style. Only the TTCSC has the narthex, while balconies were found in these three churches, while they were not often used in the Middle Ages in Europe. Local elements such as Qing Dynasty sacred stone with “Imperial Edict Memorial” symbol, the special lion-head doorknocker, Chinese couplets, and the fish-head water drainage Gargoyle in these church designs, and these unique influences can be considered as the precious Taiwanese tangible cultural heritage. The acoustical characteristics and quality of these churches due to the room volume, local materials, styles of columns, apses and domes also comprise the unique intangible cultural heritage. This work studies and documents the architectural styles of the three earliest worship spaces and the acoustic characteristics of the two earliest worship spaces in Taiwan. The tangible and intangible cultural heritages of these worship spaces can be preserved, and hopefully it can be expanded in the future as the basis for the Taiwanese worship space database.
