The article studies a proposal of pastoral action in which is highlighted the kenotic character, that is, turning oneself towards meeting and service of persons. The objective of the article is to highlight that kenotic action is part of Pope Francis’ proposal in the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, and that this can be illustrated by the theology of Urs von Balthasar. The methodology relates the authors studied, starting by verifying the theme of kenosis in the theology of Urs von Balthasar and the presence of kenosis in the life of Jesus, especially highlighted in the Last Supper. The study of the theology of Urs von Balthasar refers to the trinitarian kenosis drawn out in the kenosis of Christ and in the ecclesial kenosis, among diverse traits in the realization of Church. The model of Jesus Is considered, in a life of service, and at the Supper with the washing of the feet. The article selects instructions from Pope Francis for the Church in our times, highlighting the neologism of making the Church “take the first step” and positioning itself as “a Church which goes forth”. It is implied that the mission is better developed in communities open to dialogue and to service in the world, in the line of synodality. It concludes that the kenotic character must stand out in the Church’s pastoral dimensio, valued by Urs Von Balthasar and translated in the pastoral orientations of Pope Francis.

The “Instructions for the Married Choir Helpers” were written guidelines for the helpers of the married people choir on what today would be called pastoral counseling. Tliey were drawn up by Bishop Spangenberg on consultation with the other members of the Unity Elders' Conference between the two synods of 1775 and 1785. In most European and North American congregations manuscript copies of these “Instructions” exist, to be read only by the choir helpers. The healthy conduct of marriage, according to the principles and concepts of the church was clearly considered to be crucial to the health of the whole church. To a modern reader, the frankness and simplicity with which the practice of marital relations is described and valorized is refreshing.

This article explores the role parish priests were expected to play in educating the populace of the Habsburg empire at the end of the eighteenth century, and especially how this was manifested in the form and content of their sermons. Emperor Joseph II took a keen interest in the education of future priests and expected them to be good shepherds (pastores boni) and educators to their parishioners. To this end, together with his mother, he carried out several reforms in their education (such as changing theology faculty curricula, introducing pastoral theology as a new subject and establishing general seminaries) and even issued a special decree on 4 February 1783, providing detailed instructions for preachers. The article outlines how future priests were taught to educate their parishioners through their sermons, concentrating on how they followed these instructions in their homiletic practice, which changed the form and content of sermons radically. It is based on archival material concerning the education of future priests (such as court decrees, governmental orders and university curricula), pastoral theology textbooks used at the Prague faculty of theology, and selected printed sermons.

Abstract In marked contrast to contemporary eighteenth-century cultural and political inscriptions of the body, the Moravians articulated a radical body dialectic in which the natural manifestations of manhood and womanhood were considered to be integral elements of manifested spiritual consciousness. However, the positive corporeality of eighteenth-century Moravian faith attracted fierce criticism to the group, as the hyper-realistic linguistic and artistic depictions of the significance of the crucified Christ gave rise to virulent attacks on the ethical practices of the Moravian Church. From Goethe's age until now, both the parties of reason and religion have been fundamentally threatened by the intertwining of faith and the body and the concomitant spiritual and religious enactment in the Moravian Church. Tire Principia and the Instructions that were compiled by the synods directly after Zinzendorf's death constitute unique examples of a codification of what had been a tradition and rite within the renewed church since its very inception in 1722. This article examines the implementation of the Instructions specifically within the older girls' choir, the content of the Instructions, and explores the memoirs of eighteenth-century Bethlehem sisters for evidence of their efficacy.

In the Pastoral Letters, the roles and practices of mothering in a domestic household serve as benchmarks for the general instructions on how “one ought to behave in the household of God” (1 Tim 3:15). This article examines several passages in 1–2 Timothy and Titus in which the author employs an idealized and stereotypical view of motherhood in order to persuade female believers to fulfill this socially-appropriate condition and to restrict them from leadership positions in the community.

Abstract: The paper examines instructions of a legal nature contained in the pseudepigraphical Pastoral Epistles and in Paul, with the objective of exploring factors involved in legal education through a comparison of these texts. Since Paul leaves matters of order to be regulated by his communities, the difference between the two does not lie in an alleged dichotomy of charisma and law, but in an “institutionalization process” that has meanwhile advanced. By way of example, this paper examines the rules of “excommunication” (Tit 3,10; cf. 1Tim 1,20), the institution of widows (1Tim 5,3–16) and the remuneration of presbyters including further provisions regarding their office (1Tim 5,17–25). This results in hermeneutic insights regarding the understanding of the Pastoral Epistles, as well as the theological place of law in the church.

The 4th Synod of the Warsaw Archdioceses was debating during the five-year period, between 19th March 1998 and 19th March 2003 when the Warsaw Church had been run by the primate of Poland, cardinal Joseph Glemp. He proposed, summoned and carried out the synod and promulgated its resolutions. The initiative of summoning the synod was connected with the need for overall renewal of the religious and moral life of the Warsaw archdiocese. The synod’s deliberations and its resolutions were to cause the betterment of the organization and functioning of administrative and pastoral apparatus in the archdiocese, to normalize the many issues concerning the church and religious life, as well as to improve the laity and clergy’s religious, social and moral level. To achieve, a wide representation of clergy, catholic laity and monks were engaged. The synodical resolutions with its jurisdictional and pastoral nature are signified by strong setting in the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, the Canon Law, the documents of the Holy See and John Paul II, as well as by the resolutions of the Second Polish Plenary Second and the instructions of the Conference of the Polish Episcopate. At the same time they refer to the tradition of the Warsaw archdiocese and remain fully opened for the “tomorrow” of the Church, evangelizing and pastoral objective. Furthermore they undertake, organize and regulate many difficult pastoral issues. Thus the synodical legislator contributed to the renewal, revival and activation of the church and administrative structures of the archdioceses, so they could serve to various pastoral, church and administrative assignments.

St. Ambrose’s letters are a unique example of bishop’s concern for pastoral, social and political issues relating to the city, the diocese, the Empire and the Church. They have been a special way of his pastoral influence and work. He included in them a number of moral, legal and dogmatic instructions, among which he described a model of the Christian sage. It was based on the statements of the Stoic philosophy, but finally the Christian character arising from Scripture, and especially from the teaching of St. Paul the Apostle, was added to Ambrose’s model of a sage. According to Ambrose, the basic feature of the sage is freedom, but it also provides a number of other features – such as submission to God, love for the neighbours, the spirit of repentance, knowledge of God’s Law – which constitute the perfect sage, and ultimately – the perfect Christian.

The Vatican and United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) have issued official responses to the phenomenon of gender diversity, as well as instructions for the education and care of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people in America. However, have these authorities effectively utilized current sociological research to develop and implement contextually appropriate pastoral practices that are lifegiving and to the greatest benefit of this at-risk population? This article argues that they have not and that their recommendations have been linked to increased harm and marginalization. Utilizing Richard Osmer’s framework for practical theological interpretation, this article begins with an overview of the Magisterium’s guidance, followed by a summary of quantitative data gleaned from national surveys, population studies, and demographic analyses that reveals unique experiences of suffering and oppression. The middle sections bring in leading theories and findings from social, health, and medical fields, which illustrate TGD needs and vulnerabilities and expose the Magisterial offices’ dangerous failure to meet or even acknowledge them. The final sections call for a revised pastoral approach grounded in the concrete situations of TGD people and congruent with the Church’s commitment to love, service, and social justice. Good practice models and ethical norms are suggested for immediate incorporation into care and praxis.

Pastors are often called upon to counsel people troubled by what may be a diagnosable and treatable condition. Current research suggests that pastoral counselors (PC) are reluctant to provide a referral to a mental health professional (MHP) citing that only 10% of help seekers are referred, leaving millions of Americans to suffer with undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. The current literature indicates that PCs feel inadequately trained to counsel those with mental illnesses and the reluctance to refer is due to a distrust of MHPs. Currently, there is little qualitative research on pastors' counseling and referral experiences. In this study, social constructionism and the theory of planned behavior were used to address 3 research questions by describing PCs' experiences, describing PCs' opinions of MHPs, and examining PCs' referral decision criteria. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit 9 Southern Baptist Convention PCs from the Atlanta Metropolitan area. Giorgi's descriptive phenomenological method was used with a priori and emergent coding to analyze data collected from semistructured, face-to-face interviews. While feelings of inadequacy were confirmed by this research, it was discovered that PCs are motivated by a spiritual obligation to counsel and the reluctance to refer is not based on a distrust of MHPs, as cited by some research. Instead, PCs in this study prefer MHPs who offer Christian counseling. MHPs may want to consider incorporating spiritual sensitivity into their practice to increase PC collaboration. Increasing PC referrals may result in positive social change by decreasing the number of parishioners who suffer with undiagnosed and untreated mental illnesses.

The purpose of this dissertation study was to explore the professional preparation of students in online classes at a Christian theological seminary. Concerns of theological education involve the capacity or incapacity of community development and somatic or embodied learning in online education. Using a theoretical framework drawn from communities of practice (Wenger, 1998), professional clergical preparation (Foster, Dahill, Golemon, & Tolentino, 2005), and Gee’s (2000-2001) dimensions of identity development, the researcher focused the analyses on students’ written texts located in the discussion board fora of the online courses. These records were examined for indications of formation of the professional identity of the developing clergy, interpretation skills necessary for the clergy, performance development for activities entailed in the profession, and contextualization proficiencies for the situated enactment of the local church ministry essential in the practice of the professional clergy. The study concludes that students’ discussions evince dimensions of the development of professional identity and pastoral imagination as described in Foster, Dahill, Golemon, & Tolentino (2005). In addition, stories shared on the discussion fora, told both by the instructors and the classmates who had a range of experience in first careers or in pastoral ministry, built a shared repertoire of professional practice as inherent in a Community of Practice (Wenger,1998). The dissertation study confirms if and then identifies how graduate students in online ministerial preparation use discursive and interactive participation to identify with the professional Community of Practice of the clergy The structures of the discussion board fora, the roles of the instructor, and implications for instructional designs that may support the development of pastoral professional identity are also included. Findings demonstrated that less structured discussion prompts as well as more frequent postings stimulated more student-student interaction that built relationships. Courses that focused more on student-content interactions had less relationship building. A non-evaluative facilitation tone of the discussion fora generated a more collaborative environment. In classes that utilized a learn-by-doing approach, collaborative student discursive activity in the discussion fora supported and enhanced learning. Creative discursive activities such as case studies and role plays provided simulated experiences and spurred narrative development of shared repertoire.

Throughout the history of Western Music, composers have written works on rural and agricultural subjects. The first half of this dissertation examines a number of important works from the Baroque era through the present day and the composers who have chosen this specialized subject matter. Rural communities are underserved where the arts are concerned. Yet, rural audiences have perhaps the best chance at identifying with the subjects of this particular subset of vocal art music. The second half of this dissertation examines reasons why it is important to reach rural communities with vocal art music. Four sample recital programs appropriate for rural audiences are included.

The Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 promoted regular and effective religious instruction for the parish laity. This was facilitated by the development of preaching and instructional texts – works known as pastoralia – which proliferated throughout Europe. This dissertation explores the phenomenon of vernacular pastoralia written in rhymed verse, works intended for oral performance to a lay audience. My focus is on the work of four writers of sacramental instruction in Anglo-Norman and Middle English. The earliest text considered is the Anglo-Norman Corset, written circa 1240-50 by Robert the Chaplain. The other three authors were more or less contemporary, all writing in the late-thirteenth or early-fourteenth centuries. I examine three penitential poems by the Franciscan friar, Nicholas Bozon: Pus ke homme deit morir, Tretys de la Passion and Le char d’Orgueil, and then Handlyng Synne by the Gilbertine, Robert Mannyng. I finally consider the religious poems of William of Shoreham, a vicar in rural Kent, concentrating on De septem sacramentis and On the Trinity, Creation, the Existence of Evil, Devils, Adam and Eve. While all these writers confronted the challenges of providing religious instruction for the laity, their efforts also reflected a concern with social issues and an awareness of the literary nature of their verse enterprises. The texts frequently employed poetic or fictive devices found in popular literary genres and, whilst these illuminated and entertained listeners, they sometimes rendered the teaching obscure. The meeting of sacramental exposition, social discourse and literary invention resulted in complex textual interplay and tension, as well as in memorable formulations of faith. This dissertation considers the content of verse pastoralia in their historical context and aims to assess how the texts may have been received and understood by parishioners in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century England.

This thesis has studied how the decision of the Church of Sweden to introduce Child Impact Assessments has changed the way children and adolescents are mentioned in Pastoral instructions. Using quantitative and qualitative content analysis and the theory of implementation, it has studied how often children and adolescents are mentioned and how the rights of the child are concretized in the latest versions of the Pastoral instructions in the 13 Cathedral Parishes. Central to this study are the three foundational perspectives on the rights of the child: a Child’s-rights perspective, a Children’s perspective, and A Child’s perspective.   The thesis concludes that while the overall frequency of references to children and adolescents in the Pastoral instructions has doubled since the introduction of Child Impact Assessments, the parishes have not satisfactorily considered the rights of the child, since only a few instructions have made use of the three perspectives. The thesis argues that, in order for the parishes to fully implement the Church’s decision, and to better consider the rights of the child in their future work, there is a need for educative efforts towards staff in the parishes.

The Catholic Reform stressed the importance of the homily as indispensable part of the pastoral care of souls. This chapter outlines the pastoral and rhetorical instructions priests received for their preaching and what the role of the homily was in the liturgy (usually after a Mass). The homily increased the public stature of a priest, who now appeared prophet- or apostle-like. While some homilies focused on the biblical reading for the day, others were about catechetical issues. Most often an hour long, a homily was considered successful if it engaged its audience and kindled not only their imagination but also feelings of remorse as well as love for God.

The chapter examines the earliest set of instructions in the vernacular for meditating on death and the afterlife. First included in a handbook of practical and pastoral theology dating from the 1270s called the Miroir du Monde, these instructions achieved widespread diffusion through all classes of laypeople and clergy in the revised version of the Miroir by Friar Laurent d’Orléans, the Somme le Roi (1279). The instructions exhort readers to “go out of this world” once a day by imagining that they have died and their souls have gone first to hell, then to purgatory and paradise, in order to see what punishments and rewards await human beings in the next life. The chapter discusses the epistemology of meditative vision, and its background in Augustine’s theory of corporeal, spiritual, and intellectual vision; it examines how readers’ meditative visualization of the afterlife is facilitated by key metaphors of the text, sometimes accompanied by manuscript illustrations; it also describes the linguistic consequences of a daily implementation of the exercise.

The chapter is a reflection on my own knowledge development work as both a nursing teacher and project manager for a collaborative project at a nursing home in a different cultural context than my own. The basic perspective is an understanding that knowledge is situated, and therefore different understandings of knowledge practice will come into play when meeting each other. The focal point of the reflection is my own bodily resistance and emotional touchiness when observing wound care performed by local nursing students according to instructions from the local wound nurse. This bodily resistance as a form of counter-conduct is understood based on phenomenological insights about the body and emotions, and their possible influence on knowledge and learning practice. Furthermore, the view of learning is discussed with Foucault’s concept of pastoral power as both a disciplining power and a caring power, and possible opportunities to change practice.

This chapter evaluates William Shakespeare’s As You Like It. If critics of As You Like It agree on one thing, it is that the play is pastoral-romantic by genre. However, there are some problematic features of As You Like It, which have been called antipastoral. Shakespeare by no means flouts or satirizes pastoral convention, but merely selects a particular shade of mixed, realistic pastoral, in the interests of a particular strategy. A complex departure from pastoral is made by the prominent introduction of hunting. A fundamental characteristic of pastoral was its apparent artlessness: pastoralists went to great lengths to avoid the implication of knowledge in their shepherds. Shakespeare uses this convention to amusing effect when he makes the ultrapastoralist Jaques pretend that he is innocent of even the most ordinary technical terms of poetry. In the mixed pastoral romance, a very limited instructional element entered, in that the temporary shepherds were initiated into the value of stoicism and heard idealistic speeches about love. But in As You Like It, the educational element bulks so large as to become the main activity. The chapter then considers how As You Like It contains many references to time and objective measures.
