Texto completo da fonteThis Thesis aims to help establish a complementary funding mechanism for health services in the context of the current socioeconomic crisis in the emerging Palestinian State. It focuses on the design of an efficient and equitable cost-recovery mechanism for primary health care services, based on the value of improving the quality of care from the patients' perspective. The study makes use of contingent valuation method to assess the value, for the patients, of improving the quality of care, by eliciting patients' willingness to pay values for the different quality improvements. A contingnent valuation questionnaire was designed based on a decomposed valuation scenario and the payment card elicitation technique, with user-based financial contributions at the point of consumption being the payment vehicle. The questionnaire was administered on a sample of patients seeking care in different primary health care centers in Ramallah district during summer 2001. The elicited values were used to inform decision-makers about the highest extra user fee patients would be willing to pay to benefit from specified improvements in the quality of care. The values were used to model the demand function for improved care and to estimate demand price-elasticity and the impact of changing the pricing structure on centers' revenues. The questionnaire was re-administered 19 months later to detect the impact of the explosion of the second Palestinian Intifada and the concomitent steep impoverishment of the Palestinian population on patients' willingness and ability to pay for health care. The results demonstrate the feasibility and the “good” validity of contingent valuation when applied to developing countries. Increasing user fees seems to have a negative impact on demand for health care with price-elasticity increasing with rising user fees. An optimal user fee level could be attained to maximize centers' revenues; however, this would be accompanied with catastrophic social consequences. The study recommends suspending and attempt to put more burden on the patients in the present context, where poverty could adversly affect patients' ability to properly express their prefereces

Texto completo da fonteThis research focuses on the socio-economic adaptation of the Palestinian olive oil sector in the face of Israeli control and separation schemes (1993-2013). This sector has benefited from a deep political rehabilitation, since olive trees have gradually become the icon of the Palestinian people and the symbol of their struggle against the occupation. While analyzing how the occupation devices deeply disrupt their environment, the study considers the Palestinians as active players who are learning to bypass Israeli restrictions by developing specific practices, formal and informal, and developing new networks. The analysis also focuses on the central role played by the growing number of foreigners in the West Bank (business people, tourists, pilgrims or activists). Palestinian olive trees are an opportune channel for both international aid and demonstrations of solidarity, generating many political and economic benefits. Various people have developed a wide range of development projects, tourist services and products sold in the name of solidarity with the Palestinians. By participating in these new markets, they undergo logistical and competitive constraints that force them to change their practices, their speeches and their networks. These interactions involve indeed a reorganization of economic practices but also a change in power, dependence and hierarchy relations between all the stakeholders. Based on the study of the transformations of olive practices as a result of the separation policy, this work opens more broadly into an analysis of "the separation of the economy" and the relationships between both the inhabitants and the visitors of Israeli-Palestinian lands

Texto completo da fonteOver the past centuries, industrialization has been playing a relevant role in the development of nations, especially through its worldwide contribution to the economic growth and thus increasing people’s well-being standards. However, industrial development and how it can be influenced by governmental decisions has only been slightly analyzed in the context of disputed or occupied territories with a sovereignty recognition problem. This research aims to contribute to overcome this gap, evaluating what could be the role of the Palestinian National Authority in the promotion of the industrial development in the West Bank. The main objective of this research is to debate the key challenges and obstacles faced by the West Bank industrial sector, in the perspective of the firms’ owners and managers. This research intends to give voice to those actors by analyzing the data reached thorough in-depth interviews, complemented by a survey to a statistically representative sample of the West Bank industry, in order to assure the validity of the presented results. The obstacles for the West Bank industry growth and development are various and encompass different magnitude, causes and nature. Many of them are caused by the influence of external forces, as a consequence of the limitations imposed by the Israeli occupation since 1967. A set of six major obstacles that should receive more attention and huge efforts from the Palestinian National Authority in order to overcome its negative influences to the local industries competitiveness were identified and discussed. Obstacles related with the lack of sovereignty and the non-control of the Palestinian Authority over its external and imposed internal borders. Obstacles related with unfair competition faced by local firms, motivated by the increase of the local production costs related with extra expenses that came from the occupation, and the fact that the West Bank economy is blockade and prevented from participate in the globalized economy. Obstacles caused by difficulties in fund raising and high taxation that limit the firms’ capability to face their difficulties and to grow by embracing new projects and investments. Obstacles that arose from the insecurity and political instability that caused the unattractiveness of the local economy for new investments (domestic and foreign). Obstacles related with several adversities and privations in the use of local infrastructures by the West Bank industries. And finally, obstacles that come from outdated production processes, associated with difficulties related with the technological modernization of local firms, as well as limitations and problems that derived from local management options.

Texto completo da fonteUnderperforming employees at an organization may exhibit costly negative behaviour that reduces both profits and productivity. For James, McKechnie, and Swanberg (2011) underperforming employees cost American businesses $300 billion a year in terms of lost productivity. For example, job performance for employees depends on many different factors including establishing a productive, accomplishing relationship between staff and management. The success of any organization is reliant on employees who enjoy doing their jobs and are rewarded for their work. The main purpose of this study is identifying non-monetary factors that influence the work performance of employees. This research aims to include in its exploration the key integral elements other than money, which have an impact on the performance of employees. The wide variety of results will be described and closely disseminated to produce a current comprehensive view and understanding into the non-monetary factors governing employee performance. Post result analysis of this study offered practical and relevant solutions and recommendations to creatively utilize and manipulate these factors to improve employee performance and raise their morale. The target industry in this case is the private telecommunications sector in Palestine. Specifically, the two major companies “Jawwal” and “Al-Wataniya”. The research methods are mainly quantitative with only a qualitative method being used to inspect the results from the open-ended questions. The key findings of the study show that in both companies the employees rated recognizing and appreciating their work is the most important factor affecting their performance. Furthermore, it is found that the strong employee-manager relationship with motivation does have a positive effect on employee performance of both companies. One resultant difference between the companies is discovered, where the office environment positively effects employee work performance in only Jawwal Company
