Abundances of larval Chionoecetes bairdi and C. opilio in the southeastern Bering Sea are compared for springs of 1978 through 1981. Geographical subareas of the shelf were designated for statistical analysis of results to accommodate variations in hydrographic conditions and circulation, distribution of benthic populations, and distribution of planktonic sampling effort. Maximum observed abundances of first-stage zoeae were 1230 and 12 697∙m−2 for C. bairdi (during May) and C. opilio (during April), respectively. Numbers exceeding 10% of these values were common over some portions of the shelf during all years of study. Significant (P < 0.001) interannual differences in larval abundance were detected: in three subareas for C. opilio and in one for C. bairdi. The sharp decline in abundance of larval C. opilio after 1979 in two of the subareas could be accounted for by regional declines in numbers of adult female crabs. This was not true of the remaining subarea where two weak larval year-classes of C. opilio (1980 and 1981) and one of C. bairdi (1980) occurred despite an abundance of adult females. Vertical distribution of larval crabs is shown and the potential roles of advection, planktonic conditions, and reproductive output are evaluated with respect to observed patterns of larval abundance.

Resumo:

Opiliofauna of open biotopes in the Poloniny National Park is presented. The biotopes include the variably utilized or successively overgrowing grasslands. During the period 2011–2013, we found 21 species of harvestmen which represent 60% of the Slovak opiliofauna. The highly eudominant species was Phalangium opilio. The open and sunny biotopes as meadows and pastures proved to be typical habitats for P. opilio and Oligolophus tridens. Other dominant species were: Trogulus nepaeformis and Lacinius ephippiatus. The Carpathian endemics: Paranemastoma kochi and Ischyropsalis manicata as well as thermophilic species Egaenus convexus, Lacinius horridus and Zachaeus crista were also found in the study sites.

Abstract Recent research suggests that calcified eyestalks and gastric mill ossicles (stomach teeth) can be used to estimate the age of some crustacean species. Along with annual growth of the endocuticle, bipartite bands in the hard tissue are believed to reflect annual growth patterns (similar to fish scales or otoliths) that are retained through repeated molt cycles. Similar bands are observed in the zygocardiac ossicles of the gastric mill from the snow crab (Chionoecetes opilioFabricius 1788). If these bands reflect annual growth, they may be used to estimate age, which could enhance understanding growth, mortality, recruitment, and age composition and improve fishery management. While some studies show that the number of bands correlates to other estimates of age for C. opilio, little evidence suggests that bands accumulate annually as growth increments independent of molting. Male C. opilio terminally molt at maturity, after which they can survive for seven years or more. Shell condition, i.e., degree of wear and epibionts on their exoskeleton, is used here and by other carcinologists as a proxy for age subsequent to the terminal molt. We estimated band counts and endocuticle thickness from thin sections of the zygocardiac ossicle of terminally molted male C. opilio across a range of shell conditions from a wild, fished stock. We found no differences in band counts (P = 0.41) or endocuticle thickness (P = 0.13) across varying shell conditions and size. These results do not support the hypothesis that band counts can be used to estimate the age of this species after the terminal molt.

Chelicerate arthropods exhibit dynamic genome evolution, with ancient whole-genome duplication (WGD) events affecting several orders. Yet, genomes remain unavailable for a number of poorly studied orders, such as Opiliones (daddy-long-legs), which has hindered comparative study. We assembled the first harvestman draft genome for the species Phalangium opilio , which bears elongate, prehensile appendages, made possible by numerous distal articles called tarsomeres. Here, we show that the genome of P. opilio exhibits a single Hox cluster and no evidence of WGD. To investigate the developmental genetic basis for the quintessential trait of this group—the elongate legs—we interrogated the function of the Hox genes Deformed ( Dfd ) and Sex combs reduced ( Scr ), and a homologue of Epidermal growth factor receptor ( Egfr ). Knockdown of Dfd incurred homeotic transformation of two pairs of legs into pedipalps, with dramatic shortening of leg segments in the longest leg pair, whereas homeosis in L3 is only achieved upon double Dfd + Scr knockdown. Knockdown of Egfr incurred shortened appendages and the loss of tarsomeres. The similarity of Egfr loss-of-function phenotypic spectra in insects and this arachnid suggest that repeated cooption of EGFR signalling underlies the independent gains of supernumerary tarsomeres across the arthropod tree of life.

Abstract Snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) has become an important species for the Norwegian seafood industry since its first commercial harvest in 2012. However, periodically catch rates can be low, causing a financial strain on the fishery. Thus, improving the catch rate of existing pot designs has the potential to significantly improve the profitability of fishing enterprises. In this study, we investigated whether the addition of low-powered purple and white light-emitting diode (LED) fishing lights inside the pots could improve catch rates of snow crab in the Barents Sea. Results showed that pots with purple lights harvested a 12.8% higher catch per unit effort (CPUE; number of crab per pot) of legal-sized crab, which was significantly more than the control pots (p = 0.035); pots with white lights did not catch significantly more crab (p > 0.05). Pots equipped with only light (no bait) caught very few crabs and were not considered a viable alternative. Although purple LEDs increased snow crab capture, the economic benefits of using underwater lights in pots remains unclear given the high capital investment required.

Abstract Winger, P. D., and Walsh, P. J. 2007. The feasibility of escape mechanisms in conical snow crab traps. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 64: 1587–1591. Laboratory observations and morphometric measurements of snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) were conducted to examine the feasibility of incorporating rigid escape mechanisms into conical snow crab traps to improve trap selectivity. Under laboratory conditions, undersized adolescent male snow crab (≤94 mm carapace width) were capable of detecting, approaching, and interacting with escape mechanisms, and the location of the mechanisms was important in determining the likelihood of escape success. Escape mechanisms mounted low on the exterior wall of the trap received more than three times the number of penetration attempts than those mounted higher, although successful escape rates were very low. There was no difference in behaviour or escape success between traditional mesh traps and experimental wire (Aquamesh®) traps fitted with escape mechanisms. Morphometric measurements suggest that an escape diameter of 95 mm would optimize the egress of small crab and prevent the loss of legal-sized crab.

The Hawke Box is an offshore area (8610 km2) of the boreal Northwest Atlantic that at the request of local fishers was closed to trawling and gillnetting in 2003, but remained open to seasonal snow crab (Chionocetes opilio) pot fishing. Closure was a precautionary management measure primarily to sustain the crab fishery and secondarily to conserve cod known to aggregate there. Fall (1996–2013) and spring (1996–2003, 2015) surveys indicated that biological community assemblages changed significantly before–after and inside–outside the closure (PERMANOVA P < 0.01). Crab fishery data (1996–2013) indicated that landings and relative production declined throughout the region after closure, but was significantly more outside than inside. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) increased inside and outside the closure, and several other demersal species increased significantly more inside. The Hawke Box provides a unique boreal area for the study of restrictions on trawling and gillnetting in an area with historically strong fisheries, restrictions that are strongly supported by local fishers. The overall evidence suggests that within a decade the Hawke Box has benefited fisheries communities, fisheries production, and biodiversity conservation.

Abstract The Sox family of transcription factors regulates many processes during metazoan development, including stem cell maintenance and nervous system specification. Characterizing the repertoires and roles of these genes can therefore provide important insights into animal evolution and development. We further characterized the Sox repertoires of several arachnid species with and without an ancestral whole-genome duplication and compared their expression between the spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum and the harvestman Phalangium opilio. We found that most Sox families have been retained as ohnologs after whole-genome duplication and evidence for potential subfunctionalization and/or neofunctionalization events. Our results also suggest that Sox21b-1 likely regulated segmentation ancestrally in arachnids, playing a similar role to the closely related SoxB gene, Dichaete, in insects. We previously showed that Sox21b-1 is required for the simultaneous formation of prosomal segments and sequential addition of opisthosomal segments in P. tepidariorum. We studied the expression and function of Sox21b-1 further in this spider and found that although this gene regulates the generation of both prosomal and opisthosomal segments, it plays different roles in the formation of these tagmata reflecting their contrasting modes of segmentation and deployment of gene regulatory networks with different architectures.

Commercial harvesting of snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) in the Barents Sea started in 2012 by Norwegian fishing vessels. This new fishery has significant bait requirements, representing an emerging conservation challenge. In this study, we evaluate the performance of five alternative (natural) baits manufactured from the waste stream of existing and sustainably managed harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) and minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) capture. Five different types of new bait were evaluated, including seal fat (SF), seal fat with skin (SFS), seal meat with bone (SMB), whale fat with skin (WFS), and whale meat with fat (WMF). A comparative fishing experiment was conducted onboard a commercial snow crab fishing vessel in the Barents Sea (May–June, 2016) to evaluate the performance of traditional bait (squid, Illexs spp.) and alternative baits at catching snow crabs. Performance of the different baits were compared on the basis of the number of commercial crab caught per trap haul catch per unit effort (CPUE) and carapace width (CW). Our results showed that SF and SFS performed equally well to traditional bait, with no statistical difference in CPUE (p-value = 0.325 and 0.069, respectively). All of the other experimental baits significantly decreased CPUE, when compared to squid. No significant effect of bait treatment on CW was detected and the cumulative distribution of CW was the same between control traps and each of the bait treatments. Overall the results indicated that SF and SFS represent a viable alternative to replace traditional bait, addressing a key conservation challenge in this bait intensive snow crab fishery.

This study investigated commensal feeding interactions between the European harvestman (P. opilio L.) and the predatory mites Balaustium spp. and Anystis baccarum L. It also investigated the feeding behaviour of P. opilio. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory using standardised temperature, humidity, photoperiod and experimental arenas, with eggs of the brown blowfly (Calliphora stygia F.) as prey facsimiles. Due to initial difficulties in obtaining enough predatory mites, mite feeding was manually simulated piercing blowfly eggs with a minuten pin. P. opilio consumed significantly more freeze-killed than live blowfly eggs, indicating that freezing induced chemical and/or physical changes to blowfly eggs that are detected by P. opilio. Significantly more manually pierced eggs were consumed by P. opilio compared with unpierced ones, demonstrating that piercing caused a chemical and/or physical to the egg and increased the feeding rates of P. opilio. Different densities of eggs had no effect on the numbers eaten by P. opilio and placing single pierced eggs next to groups of unpierced eggs also had no effect on the numbers of unpierced eggs eaten. These results suggest that P. opilio does not exhibit klinokinesis or orthokinesis to intensify its search for prey around the area where previous prey were located. P. opilio ate significantly more brown blowfly eggs that had previously been fed on by mites, demonstrating that a short term commensal interaction existed. However, further work is required to demonstrate if the relationship is commensal in the longer term. A comparison between hand-pierced and mite-pierced eggs showed that P. opilio ate significantly more of the former indicating that mite and hand piercing were quantitatively different. The potential for, and importance of, other commensal or mutual relationships between predators in agroecosystems is discussed. The lack of klinokinesis and orthokinesis in P. opilio is compared with other predators and parasitoids that do exhibit these behaviours. The means by which prey are detected by P. opilio are discussed in relation to interpreting behaviours such as prey inspection. Concerns about the effect of pre-treatment and handling of sentinel prey and the problems of using prey facsimiles are raised.

Chronic pain affects approximately 100 million Americans. Opioids are the mainstay therapy for the treatment of chronic pain. While physicians and patients alike are apprehensive about using opioids due to their side effects including respiratory depression and addiction, 259 million opioid prescriptions were written in 2012. Although opioids are the most efficacious available analgesics, they increase both positive and negative reinforcement, ultimately leading to addiction. The pro-nociceptive neurotransmitter, Substance P (SP) and its corresponding receptor (NK₁R), are not only found on pain pathways to promote pain but also found in the ventral tegmental area associated with dopamine neurons. Studies have shown that Substance P can potentiate positive reinforcement of opiates and may play a role in opioid reward. Here using in vivo microdialysis, we show that systemic morphine significantly increases SP release in the VTA, an effect mediated by ventral midbrain GABAergic neurons. Substance P administered to the VTA results in a significant increase in dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Using CRISPR-Cas9 knockdown of NK₁R in the VTA we prevent the induction of opiate reward as tested using a conditioned place preference paradigm (CPP). Finally, we developed a novel opioid agonist/NK₁R antagonist bifunctional compound, TY032, which inhibits acute and chronic pain in male rats. Importantly, TY032 microinjection into the VTA did not increase extracellular dopamine release in the NAc and did not produce a positive CPP score. These data indicate dual targeting of the dopamine reward circuitry and pain pathways with multifunctional opioid-NK₁R compounds may be an effective strategy in developing future analgesics that lack the potential for abuse.

The rates of opioid prescription and use have continued to increase over the last few decades. In turn, a greater number of patients suffer from opioid tolerance. Treatment of acute pain is a clinical challenge for these patients. Acute pain can arise from common occurrences like surgical pain and pain resulting from the injury. P-glycoprotein (p-gp) is a transporter at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) associated with a decrease in the analgesic efficacy of morphine. Peripheral inflammatory pain (PIP) is a pain state known to cause a change in p-gp trafficking at the BBB. P-gp traffics from the nucleus to the luminal surface of endothelial cells making up the BBB. This surface where circulating blood interfaces with the endothelial cell is where p-gp will efflux morphine back into circulation. Osmotic minipumps were used as a long-term delivery method in this model of opioid tolerance in female rats. PIP induced p-gp trafficking away from nuclear stores showed a 2-fold increase when animals were exposed to opioids for 6 days. This observation presents a possible relationship between p-gp trafficking and the challenges of treating post-surgical pain in opioid tolerant patients. This could reveal potential strategies for improving pain management in these patients.

In order to succeed in Higher Education, students need to be able to argue effectively in writing. This thesis focuses on the argumentational skills of international students as manifested in short essays, similar to the written English proficiency tests for university admission. The study compared these essays to opinion pieces produced by expert academic writers. First, insights from the field of rhetoric were used to compare how the writers argued. An analytical tool was designed to deconstruct arguments into their essential parts to determine the number and distribution of these components in the texts. The results from this analysis then informed an investigation into selected types of cohesive markers and their role in managing writer-reader dialogues. The study found differences in both the argumentational and linguistic strategies used by the writers to persuade their readers, especially with regard to the integration of other voices. The thesis discusses implications for the teaching of argument in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) curriculum and beyond, and advocates a more rhetorical approach. Recommendations include the use of a new generative model of argument in the classroom and the use of the analytical tool for further research across different argumentational genres and academic disciplines.

Eight cyclic analogues of Substance P were made in order to investigate the conformation of the C-terminal end of the peptide. These analogues were designed to test three literature models describing the active conformation of substance P. Although the potencies of the analogues were low (in the micromolar range), our results support Cotrait's and Hospital's model (1986). Several substance P antagonists were synthesized. These compounds did not demonstrate agonistic activity nor anatagonistic activity. The tryptophan side chain is contributing to the antagonistic activity of these analogues, and not just the chirality of the α-carbon. Highly potent and selective photoaffinity ligands of H-Tyr-D-Pen-Gly-Phe-D-Pen-OH (DPDPE) and D-Phe-Cys-Tyr-D-Trp-Lys-Thr-Pen-Thr-NH₂ (CTP) were synthesized. These compounds will be useful in the isolation of δ and μ opioid receptors. Several new amino acids designed and synthesized to contain both the natural amino acid side chain and a thiol group which can be used to make disulfide constraints. The racemic amino acids made were as follows: (1) 2-amino-4-methyl-2- [(p-methylbenzyl)thiomethyl] pentanoic acid; (2) 2-amino-2- [(p-methylbenzyl)thiomethyl] -3-phenylpropanoic acid; (3) 2-amino-e- [(p-methylbenzyl)thio] pentanoic acid; and (4) 2-amino-3- [(p-methylbenzyl)-thio] -3-phenyl-pentanoic acid. These amino acids will be useful in the conformational restriction of peptides. To investigate the δ-opioid receptor conformation proposed for DPDPE by Hruby et al. (1988) and the μ-opioid receptor conformation proposed for Tyr-c [Abu₂,Gly,Phe,Leu] by Mierke et al. (1988), constrained phenylalanine amino acids were incorporated into H-Try-D-Pen-Gly-Phe-D-Pen-OH (DPDPE) in the four position. Our results indicate that these models are correct. And in an investigation into the physical-chemical properties of the delta opioid receptor, our results suggest that the δ receptor topochemical site for the Phe⁴ residue contains a partial positive charge on its surface and has specific steric requirements.

A presente disserta??o tem como objetivo analisar a conex?o entre a opini?o p?blica constru?da procedimentalmente, atrav?s do discurso, com a legitimidade e racionalidade da jurisdi??o constitucional. O exame ? feito com m?todo dedutivo, atrav?s de pesquisa qualitativa e vi?s normativo, com apoio bibliogr?fico na obra de J?rgen Habermas, tendo na teoria do agir comunicativo um ponto de partida. No decorrer do estudo s?o feitas considera??es sobre a forma??o da opini?o p?blica no contexto da democracia deliberativa e os seus reflexos na judicatura, tendo no instituto do amicus curiae um canal comunicativo entre sociedade civil e poder judici?rio. Compreende, ainda, que a jurisdi??o tem sua legitimidade condicionada a um modelo procedimental, cuja viga mestra ? a coopera??o dial?gica entre todos os atores processuais envolvidos, sendo esta uma das t?nicas adotadas pelo C?digo de Processo Civil. Ao fim, conclui que o modelo procedimental baseado em J?rgen Habermas ? aplic?vel ao Brasil.
This dissertation aims to analyze the connection between procedurally constructed public opinion, through discourse, with the legitimacy and rationality of constitutional jurisdiction. The study is carried from a deductive method, through qualitative research and normative bias, and bibliographical support on the work of J?rgen Habermas, being the theory of communicative action the starting point. In the course of the study, considerations about the formation of public opinion in the context of deliberative democracy and its reflexes in judicature, being amicus curiae the communicative channel between civil society and the judiciary branch. Comprehends, moreover, that jurisdiction has its legitimacy conditioned to a procedural model, whose crossbeam is the dialogical cooperation between all procedural actors involved, being this one of the tones adopted by the Civil Procedural Law. In the end, it is concluded that the procedural model based in J?rgen Habermas is applied in Brazil.

Resumo:

Plato’s dialogues make abundant use of the verb homologein, invariably translated ‘to agree’. Plato makes extensive use of the verb in its declarative use both in narrative reports of what Socrates and/or his interlocutors said and in direct discourse, as when Socrates invites an interlocutor to homologein that such and such, reminds him that a short while ago he agreed that such and such, and so on. We misunderstand the dialectical situation represented in Socratic discussions if we translate homologein as ‘to agree’. Socrates is interested in whether an interlocutor gives it as his opinion that p, in other words whether he maintains that p. He should not be construed as inviting the interlocutor to agree with himself that p, even when he uses the verb homologein. This thesis has implications for understanding the nature of Socratic examinations and undermines some arguments for a so-called constructive reading. Many Socratic examinations are more confrontational and less co-operative than has been supposed.

Esse estudo buscou explorar a percepção de docentes de instituições públicas e privadas acerca da sua percepção da liberdade de cátedra em programas da pós-graduação stricto sensu (mestrado e doutorado), da área de Administração. Para tanto, realizou-se uma comparação entre a liberdade na pós-graduação stricto sensu com a lato sensu e a graduação. Para isso, foi utilizada uma abordagem qualitativa do tipo de estudo de caso, tendo como fonte principal de dados entrevistas semiestruturadas com os docentes. A análise de dados foi realizada por meio da técnica de análise de conteúdo, a partir da criação de categorias de análise provenientes da literatura e da própria transcrição das entrevistas. Os resultados demonstram que os docentes entrevistados possuem ciência de sua liberdade de ensinar, sendo o conhecimento dessa liberdade proveniente, em sua grande maioria, de sua própria experiência em sala de aula. O conhecimento dessa liberdade resultou em flexibilidade para gerar discussões, que contribuíram para a pluralidade de ideias e diversidade de opinião. Mesmo assim, casos de restrições à liberdade de cátedra, ainda que de maneira isolada, foram mencionados por quase todos os entrevistados, com uma descrição bem detalhada do ocorrido, sendo considerados assim situações que marcaram suas carreiras. Com essa análise, esse estudo contribui para a ampliação do debate sobre a liberdade de cátedra, direito previsto na Constituição Federal Brasileira para docentes, do ensino público e privado, em todas as esferas de ensino.

When half of all of the cases decided by the Supreme Court have a single substantive opinion, it matters a great deal who writes that lead opinion. This chapter looks at lead opinion authorship. It finds that specialization in the relevant area of law is the single most important factor, but that this effect is dampened down in more important cases. Judges with greater workloads are slightly less likely to write lead opinions. In the most important cases, small-p politics does matters: judges who have in the past agreed more with other judges are more likely to write the lead opinion

Resumo:

Speaking is challenging in EFL students living in a Spanish-speaking country. It was the case of the participants of this study. They were teenagers of a public high school located in Ecuador. An action research was implemented. The design was quasi-experimental. Data was collected with through pre- and posttests and pre- and post-surveys. Cohen's d=3.34 indicates a large impact for improving speaking with the use of peer feedback and Voki; a p=0.000 shows statistically significant results that were due to the intervention. The instruments also collected information regarding students' perspectives towards fluency, pronunciation, peer feedback, and register. Results indicated a large change of students' opinion favoring peer feedback and register, as well as a slight change in their opinion related to fluency and pronunciation. The findings also show that this research study has implications for educators, directors, and principals of institutions who are interested in improving the English-speaking skills of their students.

Parenthetical constructions with verbs of opinion (as I think) are considered as the result of the reduction of the main clause: Ja dumaju, chto priglashenie prislal professor Wiler → Priglashenie, kak ja dumaju, prislal professor Wiler. The meaning of the mental verb tense affects the interpretation of the sentence. In the present tense, construction as I think introduces an assumption with a neutral status: Eto proizojdet, kak ja dumaju, v samom blizhajshem budushchem [Ju. Semenov]—‘no one knows, P or non-P’. In the past tense, construction as I thought introduces a wrong assumption: Djadja, kotoryj, kak ja dumal, davno zabyl o podarennykh chasakh, vosprinjal etu novost’ boleznenno.

Increasingly, the notion of manager is confronted with that of leader. The literature written on this subject is considerable (John P. Kotter and Abraham Zaleznik being only two of the sound names that can be mentioned in this endeavor). Zaleznik proposed that managers were results driven and leaders were creative artists. Kotter proposed that leaders navigated change and managers navigated complexity. John P. Kotter says that today's managers need to know how to lead, be managers and leaders. The differences are: 1. Management is more formal and scientific than leadership. Management is an explicit set of tools and techniques, based on reason and testing, that can be used in a variety of situations; 2. Leadership involves having a vision of where the organization should go; 3. Leadership demands cooperation, teamwork. Researcher Warren Bennis said, “Managers are people who do things right, and leaders are people who do right things.” Organizations need both. So what does leader mean, what does manager mean? Why are these concepts being put so often face to face? A management specialist, P. Drucker (1954) draws a first distinction: management means doing the right thing, and leadership means doing the right thing. Such an opinion is continued by S. R. Covey (1990): "management is efficient in ascending on the scale of success, and management determines whether the ladder is placed on the right wall". In other words, the manager manages, organizes, the leader has a vision. Such a direction of analysis is illustratively supported by the metaphor of the road through the jungle: in organizing and conducting this expedition - often similar to the activity of organizations to achieve the proposed objectives - the manager prepares the tools, distributes them to the participants, writes and debates procedural manuals, in time what the driver looks for the direction, the path, has a certain sense for finding the best way. Thus, while the manager generates orders, organization, the leader creates and causes change, draws directions not only objectives, sets directions not only agendas, seeks new resources does not rationally allocate only existing ones. Assuring quality management inevitably brings multiple changes of substance and size in terms of philosophy and management practice at the level of the Romanian school. The concept of quality management necessarily includes the notion of leadership. The multiple researches carried out over time on quality management in education have consistently nominated among the factors that generate and feed this efficiency, the idea of leadership. Thus, the quality of leader of the manager is considered fundamental for ensuring quality management in the school, and the school is considered effective.
