Abstract Living Documents is a series of looped live installations developed between 2017 and 2019 based on five artist-choreographers and how they work. The project was initiated by Dominik Grünbühel and Charlotta Ruth as an artistic response to the following research question: What is liveness and what can it be? The research was directed towards the necessity—but also difficulty—of documenting live performances. This text reflects how the method of passing on (in Swedish, tradera) through the collaborative process with choreographer Anna Öberg, whose practice is based in Swedish folk dance, has come to influence the documentary approach. By resonating how passing on in the cosmology of Folk Traditions is different to other methods of physical and oral transfer, Öberg together with Ruth develop how passing on can be valuable beyond the realm of Folk Tradition. Specifically, they unfold the ways in which this multi-sensorial transfer of material and knowledge from person to person and context to context can inspire documentary and reflexive translations between media and different aesthetic realms and thereby contribute to creative ways of sharing knowledge in the field of artistic research.

This report presents results of research on the failure of the inflation accounting standard in New Zealand. Presentation of the results in three narratives highlights that any such research is a series of interlocking and overlapping events, and that narrative is a direct and efficient means of communicating both causal and transactional components which contributed towards the outcomes. Isolation of the three narratives was chosen to demonstrate that it is not useful to extol an explanatory or interpretative paradigm for accounting history if it is advocated at the expense of sequential accounts of events.

Background: Lasers have recently been discovered as effective treatment modalities in dentistry, offering benefits such as reduced bleeding, infection, treatment and healing durations, and significantly improving patient convenience. They have found a wide range of applications in dentistry, from periodontal therapy to post-extraction healing, allowing for surgical procedures without sutures and minimizing post-operative bleeding by sealing blood vessels. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of diode laser treatment for tissue ablation in the oral cavity, particularly focusing on cases of excessive gingival growth (gummy smile) and peri-implantitis. Methods: This case series involved two patients: a 19-year-old female undergoing orthodontic treatment with excessive gingival growth and a gummy smile, and a 50-year-old female with peri-implantitis. Both patients were treated using a 980 nm diode laser. Laser parameters included a pulsed operational mode with a frequency of 5 kHz, peak power of 3 W, average power of 1.5 W, and a fiber diameter of 200 µm, with a 50% duty cycle. Data collection involved pre-operative and post-operative clinical examinations, including intraoral photographs, to document gingival overgrowth and treatment outcomes. Post-operative assessments were conducted at regular intervals to evaluate healing, erythema, swelling, and signs of infection. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25. Results: In the first case, laser treatment reduced gingival overgrowth from 6-7 mm to 0 mm, with no erythema or swelling and minimal pain (VAS score from 4/10 to 1/10). Esthetic improvement was rated as excellent. In the second case, laser treatment resolved gingival overgrowth, eliminated bleeding on probing, and reduced pain (VAS score from 5/10 to 1/10). Implant abutments were clean, with no inflammation. Conclusion: Diode laser therapy is effective for tissue ablation in the oral cavity, ensuring the restoration of esthetics and function. It offers precise tissue removal, reduced post-operative bleeding, and accelerated healing, making it a valuable tool in modern dental practice.

The intense scholarly debate concerning the shift from orality to literacy has not often directly concerned African historians in spite of the fact that many work closely with oral sources. In the process of publishing a series of locally-written histories, I discovered that transforming oral tradition into written form is ultimately political. It raised a number of important ethical dilemmas for me as a scholar and brought to my attention the power relations inherent in these transactions. Oral knowledge and its transformation is not neutral or entirely benevolent. I found out that the change from an oral to a written knowledge base takes power out of the hands of community elders and puts it into the public domain, where literate men have the advantage and where community security may be vulnerable. As scholars we need to face our own involvement in these political processes, even if we cannot ultimately control them.

Abstract This review details the invention and clinical testing of a new power toothbrush designed to provide a low cost, effective toothbrush, which has a combination of a round oscillating head in conjunction with fixed bristles. The data demonstrate this power toothbrush (Crest® SpinBrush™) is an effective cleaning toothbrush with respect to plaque removal. Four independent 4-period crossover studies, where subjects used each brush twice, have demonstrated that brushing with this power toothbrush results in 10-40% greater plaque removal relative to a series of control manual toothbrushes. Separate research has confirmed that adults and children tend to brush longer, 35.8% and 38.3% respectively, when using this power toothbrush relative to manual toothbrushes. In addition, it has been shown to be superior to a battery-powered toothbrush (Colgate ActiBrush™) in two independent studies and has demonstrated comparable efficacy to a leading powered toothbrush (Oral-B Ultra Plaque Remover®). A series of destructive and tumefactive lesions of the oral cavity are increasingly recognized as part of the IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) spectrum. We herein examined the clinical, serological, radiological, and histological features of a series of patients referred to our clinic because of oral cavity lesions ultimately attributed to IgG4-RD. In particular, we studied 6 consecutive patients out of 200 patients referred to the immunology outpatient unit who presented with erosive and/or tumefactive lesions of the oral cavity. All patients underwent serum IgG4 measurement, nasal endoscopy, radiological studies, and histological evaluation of tissue specimens. The histological studies included immunostaining studies to assess the number of IgG4+ plasma cells/High-Power Field (HPF) for calculation of the IgG4+/IgG+ plasma cell ratio. Six patients (3% of the entire cohort) were diagnosed with IgG4-RD of the oral cavity based on histological evaluation. A major complaint at presentation was oral discomfort due to bulging mass. A mild to no increase in serum IgG4 was observed. Different patterns of organ involvement were associated with oral lesions. Five patients were treated with immunosuppressive therapy and two patients promptly responded to B-cell depletion with rituximab. Watchful waiting was decided in one patient with no major clinical symptoms. Involvement of the oral cavity is an infrequent manifestation of IgG4-RD but should be taken into consideration as a possible differential diagnosis of tumefactive or erosive lesions once neoplastic conditions are excluded. A histological examination of biopsy samples from the oral cavity represents the mainstay for diagnosis of IgG4-RD.

The purpose of this essay is to examine the relationships between “the oral” and “the written” in a particular application of narrative research (life rendering research). First, we examine a functional and valuing contrast between oral and written language within oral history methods. Second, we present a critical examination of the use of these linguistic predispositions as they impact life history narratives. Next, we examine a particularly close analogy between oral history and psychiatric patient write-up. Finally, the historical oral/written tension located in oral history practice is located within the frameworks of newer, media-based literacies. The tensions that these intentions create are particularly acute in power-based relationships, such as those between interviewers and informants. Therefore, the organization of the paper is a series of issues that combine to form a critical look at the use of informants’ words in the written narratives of the oral history as a form of discourse synthesis (Spivey, 1997).

ABSTRACTBackground:The histologic appearance of esophageal eosinophils has been correlated with esophagitis and gastroesophageal reflux disease in children. Esophageal eosinophilia that persists despite traditional antireflux therapy may not represent treatment failure, but instead may portray early eosinophilic gastroenteritis or allergic esophagitis. In this study, a series of pediatric patients with severe esophageal eosinophilia who were unresponsive to aggressive antireflux therapy were examined and their clinical and histologic response to oral corticosteroid therapy assessed.Methods:Of 1809 patients evaluated prospectively over 2.5 years for symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux, 20 had persistent symptoms and esophageal eosinophilia, despite aggressive therapy with omeprazole and cisapride. These patients were treated with 1.5 mg/kg oral methylprednisolone per day, divided into twice‐daily doses for 4 weeks. All patients underwent clinical, laboratory, and histologic evaluation before and after treatment.Results:Histologic findings in examination of specimens obtained in pretreatment esophageal biopsies in children with primary eosinophilic esophagitis indicated significantly greater eosinophilia (34.2 ± 9.6 eosinophils/high‐power field [HPF]) compared with that in children with gastroesophageal reflux disease who responded to medical therapy (2.26± 1.16 eosinophils/HPF; p < 0.001). After corticosteroid therapy, all but one patient with primary eosinophilic esophagitis had dramatic clinical improvement, supported by histologic examination (1.5± 0.9 eosinophils/HPF, p < 0.0001).Conclusions:Pediatric patients in a series with marked esophageal eosinophilia and chronic symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease unresponsive to aggressive medical antire‐flux therapy had both clinical and histologic improvement after oral corticosteroid therapy.

Cette thèse se situe à l'intersection du calcul formel et de la combinatoire énumérative.À partir d'un problème d'énumération donné, une idée bien connue en combinatoire énumérative consiste à transformer le problème d'énumération en une équation fonctionnelle impliquant la fonction génératrice associée à l'énumération.Dans certains problèmes de dénombrement sophistiqués apparaissent également des systèmes d'équations fonctionnelles. L'objectif est d'étudier ces équations fonctionnelles afin d'en déduire des informations sur le problème de dénombrement initial.Un résultat célèbre de Bousquet-Mélou et Jehanne (2006) stipule que lorsque ces équations sont d'une forme particulière, ses solutions formelles sont annulées par des polynômes non nuls. De plus, ils fournissent un premier algorithme pour calculer de tels polynômes.Dans cette thèse, nous nous appuyons sur des résultats classiques de calcul formel afin d'analyser et de comparer (c'est-à-dire avec des estimations quantitatives) les algorithmes de l'état de l'art. Sur la base de ces analyses théoriques, nous concevons ensuite des algorithmes géométriques efficaces pour calculer ces polynômes.Les nouveaux algorithmes sont ensuite implémentés dans un logiciel: cela permet de résoudre des problèmes qui étaient auparavant hors de portée par des approches automatisées. This thesis lies at the intersection of computer algebra and enumerative combinatorics.From a given enumeration problem, a well known habit in enumerative combinatorics consists in turning the enumeration problem into a functional equation involving the generating function associated to the enumeration. In some sophisticated enumeration problems also appear systems of functional equations.The goal is to study these functional equations in order to deduce informations on the initial enumeration problem.A celebrated result of Bousquet-Mélou and Jehanne (2006) states that when these functional equations possess a particular shape, their solutions are unique and are annihilated by nonzero polynomials. They also provide a first algorithm for computing such polynomials.In this thesis, we rely on classical results from computer algebra in order to analyze and compare (i.e. with quantitative estimates) the state-of-the-art algorithms. Based on these theoretical analyses, we then design efficient geometry-driven algorithms for computing these annihilating polynomials. The new algorithms are then implemented in a software: this makes it possible to solve previously out-of-reach problems via automated approaches. Last but not least, we extend the state-of-the-art to the case of systems of functional equations, with some views in the direction of Artin's approximation theory

Xala (1974) by the pioneering Senegalese director Ousmane Sembene, was acclaimed on its release for its scorching critique of postcolonial African society, and it cemented Sembene’s status as a wholly new kind of politically engaged, pan-African, auteur film-maker. Centring on the story of businessman El Hadji and the impotence that afflicts him on his marriage to a young third wife, Xala vividly captures the cultural and political upheaval of 1970s Senegal, while suggesting the radical potential of dissent, solidarity and collective action, embodied by El Hadji’s student daughter Rama and the group of urban ‘undesirables’ who act as a kind of raw chorus to the affairs of the neocolonial elite. James S. Williams’s lucid study traces Xala’s difficult production history and analyses its daring combination of political and domestic drama, oral narrative, social realism, symbolism, satire, documentary, mysticism and Marxist analysis. Yet from its dazzling extended opening sequence of revolution as performance to its suspended climax of redemption through ritualised spitting, Xala presents a series of conceptual and formal challenges that resist a simple reading of the film as allegory. Highlighting often overlooked elements of Sembene’s intricate, experimental film-making, including provocative shifts in mood and poetic, even subversively erotic, moments, Williams reveals Xala as a visionary work of both African cinema and Third Cinema that extended the parameters of postcolonial film practice and still resounds today with its searing inventive power.

Against the backdrop of America’s urban rebellions in the 1960s, an unexpected cohort of New York radicals unleashed a series of urban guerrilla actions against the city’s racist policies and contempt for the poor. They occupied a hospital, took over a church, paralyzed traffic with uncollected garbage, tested children for lead poisoning, defended prisoners, fought the military police, and fed breakfast to poor children. Their dramatic flair, uncompromising vision for a new society, and skill in linking local problems to international crises riveted the media, alarmed New York’s political class, and challenged nationwide perceptions of civil rights and black power protest. The group called itself the Young Lords. Utilizing oral histories, archival records, and an enormous cache of police records released only after a decade-long Freedom of Information Law request and subsequent court battle, Johanna Fernández has written the definitive history of the Young Lords, from its roots as a Chicago street gang to its rise and fall as a political organization in New York. Led by working-class Puerto Rican youth and modelled after the Black Panther Party, the Young Lords confronted race and class inequality and questioned U.S. foreign policy. Their imaginative protests and media savvy tactics won reforms, popularized socialism, and exposed America’s imperial project in Puerto Rico. Fernández challenges what we think we know about the sixties. In riveting style, she demonstrates how the Young Lords redefined the character of protest, the color of politics, and the cadence of urban culture in the age of great dreams.

El libro se organiza en dos secciones. La primera consta de una serie de capítulos que pretenden proponer grandes líneas teóricas generales, que son el resultado de la experiencia docente y de las conclusiones del proyecto de investigación La enseñanza del Lenguaje Visual en los distintos niveles del sistema educativo nacional. Aportes teóricos, metodológicos y pedagógicos. No se trata de sustituir un modelo por otro, sino de poner a consideración propuestas alternativas que permitan construir las bases teóricas y los acuerdos epistemológicos primordiales para, luego, reconfigurar cuáles serían los contenidos específicos y las estrategias pedagógicas y didácticas. Por estas razones, los temas centrales que se abordan son aquellos que, habitualmente, no forman parte de los programas de estudio, mientras que se hará referencia a los contenidos tradicionales solo si de algún modo enriquecen o ejemplifican los lineamientos principales. La segunda parte ofrece un conjunto de glosarios de términos técnicos y sus correspondientes ejemplos visuales. Este libro reúne, entonces, reflexiones, ideas, propuestas, que atravesaron quince años intensos de actividad docente y de investigación. Haciendo nuestro el pensamiento de Gastón Bachelard (2011), sabemos que «Hay una gran distancia entre las palabras que se confían a un auditorio simpatizante y la disciplina necesaria para escribir un libro. En la enseñanza oral, animados por la alegría de enseñar, a veces la palabra piensa» (p. 32). Las páginas que siguen son, tal como consideramos la enseñanza de las artes, por definición transitorias, todavía parciales y de carácter general.

Como será o lugar quando ninguém passa por ele? – pergunta o poeta. Será que “Existem coisas sem ser vistas?” E o mundo, mundo grande, como escreveu, pode existir “apenas pelo olhar que cria e lhe confere espacialidade?” O poeta parece querer nos dizer que “Aquilo que vemos vale – vive – apenas por aquilo que nos olha”, 1 que ver é experimentar ser visto, que ser visto é existir, e ainda que haja uma “cisão que separa dentro de nós o que vemos daquilo que nos olha”, 2 as coisas, os acontecimentos só têm existência na medida mesma de nossa presença, de nossa potência visual, de nosso corpo que toma e encorpa o espaço, o tempo e gera existência e resistência, presença e ausência, o antes e o depois, a perda e a insistência. Duas dimensões importantes de parte significativa da poética de Carlos Drummond de Andrade são a memória e a questão da finitude, que se manifestam em resíduos de memórias e de espaços familiares. A dimensão da finitude, em especial, faz com que o poeta some inúmeras questões em forma de perguntas à sua poética, como lemos na passagem do poema supracitado. Esse dado é importante porque denota a provisoriedade e a fragilidade das respostas possíveis elaboradas no corpo dos próprios poemas. O poeta não tem respostas para todas as perguntas que faz. Os historiadores também não têm respostas para todas as questões que levantam em suas pesquisas, em suas aulas, cursos, intervenções. Por isso, com relação a Drummond, parte de sua poesia é metapoesia. Nesse sentido, somos levados a nos perguntar se a escrita do Historiador não seria meta-história, ou seja, o “estudo referente à história enquanto historiografia; por exemplo, o estudo da linguagem, ou linguagens, da historiografia”? 3 Assim, dessa forma, elaboramos histórias que ajudam na construção de outras histórias? Cada um dos autores desta coletânea conhece o lugar por onde passam, porque sua prática é constituída por um demorar-se em suas temáticas, pela identificação e reflexão sobre problemas e questões, portanto, o desejo é que nada permaneça fora do alcance de sua vista, o que garante para cada um a criação e configuração de certa espacialidade e temporalidade fundamentais com relação às pesquisas abordadas. Evidentemente que demorar-se e conhecer-se, nas temáticas levantadas, não isenta todos, todas e cada um de certa estranheza e inquietação marcadas exatamente pelas respostas impossíveis de serem encontradas, assim é que a familiaridade com a temática não garante, e jamais garantirá, a tranquilidade de um “sentir-se em casa”, o que até certo ponto é bom, na medida em que nos coloca sempre em estado de alerta para o que até então não foi visto, alcançado, sentido como presença em variados tempos e espaços, e que esperam de nós inteligibilidade na busca, a um só tempo, pelo todo e as partes, como assevera Antoine Proust. Portanto, nada é suposto na existência, isso porque, como escreve o poeta, “Ou tudo vige planturosamente, à revelia/ de nossa judicial inquirição / e esta apenas existe consentida/ pelos elementos inquiridos?”, posto que o que vigora na existência, mesmo à revelia de nossa mais cuidadosa inquirição, o que garante as nossas questões, são as próprias questões, e não o que está fora, o que não faz parte das problemáticas levantadas, e é exatamente nessa “espantosa batalha/ entre o ser inventado/e o mundo inventor” que nos colocamos e nos demoramos. Somos “ficção rebelada/ contra a mente universa”, levantando a alvenaria de nosso lugar, de nosso estranho lugar, de nossa morada, lugar de uma certa permanência que nos ampara e nos sacode ao mesmo tempo. Assim, abrimos nossas trilhas em seu sétimo volume. Trilhas são caminhos ou estradas, existentes ou estabelecidos, com dimensões e formas, comprimento e largura diferentes, aptos a aproximar, juntar, estabelecer espaços de interação, indicar, duvidar, marcar, apontar direções, ligar, sinalizar, abrir passagens. Entre as inúmeras trilhas abertas sertões afora e cidades adentro, nós abrimos as nossas, dispomos nossos passos, medimos as dificuldades do terreno e nos lançamos nessa caminhada que já dura tantos anos, deixando fincados nas terras por onde passamos, marcos e marcas, impressões e signos, sinais e símbolos, partes de cada de um nós, como um olhar lançado, que confere e configura tempos e espacialidades. O presente volume divide-se em duas partes, respectivamente: “História, memória, autoritarismo e militância política no século XX” e “Experiências citadinas e sertanejas, oralidade e tradição nos sertões do Ceará nos séculos XIX e XX”. Na primeira parte do livro, abrimos nossos trabalhos com o capítulo de Jucelio Regis da Costa, “Da construção a celebração do golpe de 1964 no Ceará: usos políticos de elementos neomedievalizantes”, que faz uma análise de acontecimentos nacionais da década de 1960, com profundas repercussões no Ceará, como as Cruzadas do Rosário em Família, a Missa congratulatória às Forças Armadas e as Marchas da Vitória, com ampla mobilização política de grupos conservadores do estado, com a finalidade de combater o comunismo, servindo assim “na pavimentação do caminho ao golpe civil-militar de 1964”. O autor elege como objeto central de sua análise elementos neomedievalizantes, quando sentidos positivos foram atribuídos à Idade Média e os acontecimentos em questão foram medievalizados. Edvanir Maia da Silveira, em “Os partidos políticos e a experiência democrática na Zona Norte Cearense (1945-64)”, discute como as décadas de 1945 a 1964 consagraram-se na historiografia como tempo da experiência democrática, em que vigorava uma Constituição, partidos, eleições e participações sociais no debate político, sem, no entanto, descurar do fato de que muitas práticas autoritárias estavam presentes e ativas no cenário político, de modo que essas experiências e conflitos foram vivenciados e ressignificados pelas lideranças da Zona Norte do Ceará. O capítulo assinado por Viviane Prado Bezerra, “‘Quando a mulher sai do mundo da cozinha dela e começa a participar das coisas, então ela começa a ver o mundo diferente’: trabalho pastoral e atuação política das camponesas no Movimento do Dia do Senhor (1970-1990)”, aborda a militância religiosa e política de mulheres camponesas no Movimento do Dia do Senhor, uma iniciativa católica que tinha relação com as Comunidades Eclesiais de Base – CEBs e que teve intensa atuação entre as décadas de 1960 e 1990 alimentada pela dimensão da “fé e vida”, modificando “a visão de mundo e atuação dessas mulheres em suas comunidades”, tornando-as “protagonistas na luta pela libertação, posse da terra e pela igualdade de gênero”. No último capítulo da primeira parte, “Cem anos de comunismo no Brasil: onde Camocim entra nessa história?”, de Carlos Augusto Pereira dos Santos, o autor discute, dentro das comemorações dos cem anos do Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCdoB), agora em 2022, a participação da cidade de Camocim nessa longa história, utilizando como documento uma entrevista realizada com o “Sr. Nilo Cordeiro de Oliveira, comunista histórico em Camocim, filho de Pedro Teixeira de Oliveira (Pedro Rufino), um dos fundadores do Partido Comunista Brasileiro (PCB) em Camocim em 25 de março de 1928”. Voltando à trilha poética aberta por Carlos Drummond de Andrade, tomando o caminho dA suposta existência, pensamos se “A guerra sem mercê, indefinida, prossegue, feita de negação, armas de dúvida […]teima interrogante de saber/ se existe o inimigo, se existimos/ ou somos todos uma hipótese/ de luta/ ao sol do dia curto em que lutamos”, e se a nossa luta se faz e se refaz em cada página escrita, em cada aula debatida, em cada projeto realizado, uma vez que, se a pressa existe, é porque sabemos que um dia é muito curto para quem luta. Por isso a soma de todos nós, a multiplicação de nossas pesquisas, a publicização tão importante de nossas inquietações. Na segunda parte do livro, Francisco Dênis Melo, a partir do capítulo “Sobral e os seus altares: imaginária urbana e heróis civilizadores”, tem como objetivo “pensar a cidade de Sobral-CE a partir de alguns de seus habitantes de pedras, ou melhor, de sua imaginária urbana, no caso bustos, estátuas e monumentos destacados em variados espaços, notadamente em suas praças”, que funcionaram e ainda funcionam como anteparo para os campos políticos e religiosos na cidade, constituindo assim um poderoso mecanismo simbólico de construção do poder em Sobral. Thiago Braga Teles da Rocha, em “‘Sobral como cidade progressista’: entre planos, projetos e representações”, discute o processo de eletrificação em Sobral, estabelecendo uma relação com o conceito de progresso. O texto nos mostra que foi organizada uma “campanha em prol da eletrificação da cidade, realizada por setores da elite política da cidade, com destaque para a Igreja Católica a partir do jornal Correio da Semana”. Para isso, foi utilizado o “Projeto das Redes Primárias e Secundárias de Distribuição de Energia Elétrica da Cidade de Sobral”, documento resguardado no Núcleo de Documentação Histórica (NEDHIS), ligado ao curso de História da Universidade Estadual Vale do Acaraú. O capítulo assinado por Antônio Vitorino Farias Filho, “Imagens no espelho: mulher depravada e mulher ideal em Ipu-CE no início do século XX”, discute a questão da prostituição e sua relação tensa com a chamada Modernidade e com os valores do progresso, de modo que a prostituta no espaço público representou “uma imagem invertida da mulher ideal, buscada pelos grupos dominantes”. Chama atenção o autor para o importante fato de que “É somente no início do século XX, mais ainda na década de 1920, na cidade de Ipu, que a prostituta e a prostituição aparecem explicitamente nas fontes”. No capítulo “‘Isso é atestado de seu progresso. Sí Sobral, Camocim e outras cidades sertanejas têm o seu jornal, porque não poderíamos ter?’ a elite escritora e o ideário de controle e modernidade em Ipu-CE (1900-1920)”, Antonio Iramar Miranda Barros e Alexandre Almeida Barbalho discutem a questão da Modernização sob a ótica das lides jornalísticas, a partir das experiências e do “pensamento de três sujeitos, a partir dos grupos aos quais pertenciam: Abílio Martins, Herculano Rodrigues e Leonardo Mota”, entendendo que os jornais eram encarados como sinais claros de progresso, desenvolvimento e inovação. Raimundo Alves de Araújo e Emmanuel Teófilo Furtado Filho assinam o capítulo “O campo de concentração do Ipu no contexto da Revolução de 1930”. Os autores analisam a constituição do campo de concentração na cidade do Ipu no ano de 1932, no contexto de criação de outros campos, em cidades como Quixeramobim, Crato, Cariús, Senador Pompeu e Fortaleza. Os autores refletem que tal acontecimento não tem o reconhecimento e importância para os poderes locais, lamentando “que não haja um marco histórico identificando o local exato do campo de concentração do Ipu, nem um memorial preservando a memória e a história de tão trágico e lamentável acontecimento!” O campo de concentração da cidade do Ipu fazia parte de um projeto maior, que, entre outros objetivos, pretendia “fazer dele uma ‘parede de contenção’ para poupar a cidade de Sobral do assédio dos retirantes”. Nesse sentido, afirmam os autores que “Ignorar este passado horrível é o mesmo que ‘assassinar novamente’ aquelas vítimas”. Na sequência, Cid Morais Silveira, em “‘Os teus filhos, cidade encantada, escondidos no seu coração’: a vida e a morte do Centro Social Morrinhense (1952 – 1963)”, analisa a criação e o fim de uma instituição chamada Centro Social Morrinhense, em 1952, na cidade de Fortaleza, num contexto em que seus fundadores acreditavam que Morrinhos, “uma pequena vila encravada entre o litoral e o sertão, no interior cearense, composta de oito ruas, dois grandes quadriláteros que os moradores chamavam de ‘praça’ e com aproximadamente 1.097 habitantes”, estava “desamparada e abandonada pelo poder público”, objetivando “1º) proporcionar as melhores ocasiões de progresso àquela vila; 2º) levantar o nível social de seus habitantes; 3º) auxiliar os estudantes pobres do distrito; 4º) promover campanha sobre assuntos dos mais variados: educação, cultura, escolas, alfabetização de adultos, agricultura e outros problemas locais”. Joaquim dos Santos, no capítulo “‘Nas porteiras’ de outros mundos: a Pedra Branca na tradição oral”, encontrou uma pedra em seu caminho. Por isso reflete “sobre o lugar da Pedra Branca na tradição oral sobre os mortos na região do Cariri, dando destaque às memórias sobre a grande rocha e os significados que lhe são atribuídos pelos moradores das áreas próximas ao rochedo”. Aponta o autor que “a Pedra Branca está localizada no sítio Jatobá, na encosta da Chapada do Araripe, zona rural do município de Porteiras”. Ele enfatiza ainda que na “relação entre as pedras e as almas nos interiores do Brasil, é notório como seus laços são estreitos e porosos, tanto no que diz respeito às pedrinhas, quanto aos grandes rochedos”. Fechando a segunda parte e a obra, temos o capítulo de Reginaldo Alves de Araújo, “Vamos falar sobre um sertão? Do sertão dos párias incultos ao culto à pátria”, no qual o autor analisa “algumas variações de sentido da palavra sertão em diferentes momentos históricos”, atentando para o fato de que vai deixar “de lado a ideia de sertão como sinônimo de seca e de fome […] para nos concentrarmos em outras duas imagens: a de um espaço não civilizado no contexto colonial, ao sertão enquanto reservatório das raízes culturais da nacionalidade brasileira”. Entende o autor o sertão como um espaço plural e simbólico, material e sensível, sendo entendido também como um espaço de resistência renhida ao colonialismo. Voltando à trilha aberta por Carlos Drummond, no poema A suposta existência, nos diz o poeta: “[…] e tento construir-me de novo a cada instante, a cada cólica, na faina de traçar meu início […]”. O ser do poeta é parte remontada, refeita, ressignificada com a matéria da vida, com o espanto de todo dia. Ser reconstrução é sonhar ser outro a cada instante, apesar da cólica, do gemido. O que há, de fato, para se construir novo a cada instante, é uma multiplicidade de caminhos, de trilhas, de sendas abertas. O poeta nos mostra novos caminhos, assim como historiadores e historiadoras também apontam em seus trabalhos para o múltiplo das coisas, da vida, dos acontecimentos. E se uma das características da obra poética de Drummond é o “princípio-corrosão”, nas palavras de Luiz Costa Lima, nas obras dos historiadores temos, certamente, o “princípio-reflexão”, quem sabe, de forma mais ousada, o “princípio-coração”… Boa caminhada! It proposes that the tellers used their skills at entertaining their audiences to deal critically with issues like marriage, the family, domination, power, and the need for secrecy.

This chapter elaborates on the miraculous bird-like deity known to Tibetans as Khyung. Following a description of the creation of the universe from the Bon and Buddhist perspectives, this chapter covers the birth, appearance, food, form and power of the Khyung. Additionally, it tells the story of how the red Khyung was captured by the demon and subsequently rescued by a wise bat. The chapter offers deep insights into the matrix of Buddhist and non-Buddhist knowledge that together have nourished the Tibetan cultural world.

Chapter 2 benefits from a larger corpus collected over several years by Noël J. Gueunier and his collaborator Madjidhoubi Said. Numerous versions of Africa’s most widespread folktale, the defiant girl who marries a monster in human disguise, reinforce the importance of making a proper marriage. The popularity of the tale, in many versions in a small island, show performers varying it in tone and borrowing elements from other tales. One version is totally politicized. Other adaptations change the wife from victim into a potent folktale heroine. Narrators also tell about the trickster Bwanawasi (note his Swahili name), use semi-autobiography or familiar names and places to keep their hearers engaged, perform a classic French fairytale, or create stories of their own parodying traditional models or even cinema thrillers. In such a dominated society, parody is a prime tool for reappropriating inherited or borrowed materials. That is the style of creolization, the process whereby people in situations of unequal power renegotiate language and culture and create new art, music, and literature.

Abstract Although there were elements of oral history work among environmental historians in the twentieth century, several factors have contributed to the increasing place the methodology holds in emerging studies of the environment in the twenty-first century. Oral history is being increasingly valued for the ways it can contribute questions and substance and bring added complexity to environmental history as an intellectual enterprise. This growth has also been influenced by the extension of environmental history beyond North America and Europe to the Global South. Oral history now is much more than a supplementary source, as suggested by earlier environmental historian; it increasingly serves an intellectually programmatic and enriching function for the field. It can expand environmental history in several ways, adding new dimensions of time, place, race, class, gender, power, and social conflict. It should be more seriously embraced by environmental historians for its great potential.

The power of community is at the center of a series of musical plays created by the Higher Ground Project, which is composed of students at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College and residents of Harlan County, Kentucky, and is spearheaded by Robert Gipe, director of the college’s Appalachian Program. The plays begin with oral histories gathered by Appalachian studies students and other Harlan County community members as part of grants awarded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Appalachian Regional Commission; from these interviews, Higher Ground participants create musical theater. This chapter delves into the revolutionary impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on detecting and managing dental caries. Dental professionals can now achieve enhanced diagnostic accuracy by harnessing the power of machine learning algorithms and image recognition technologies, even identifying early-stage caries that conventional methods might overlook. The integration of AI into dentistry not only promises improved patient outcomes by facilitating timely interventions and streamlining clinical workflows, potentially redefining the future of oral healthcare. While the prospects are promising, it is imperative to concurrently address the challenges and ethical considerations accompanying AI-driven diagnostics to ensure that the technology augments, rather than supplants, the expertise of dental professionals. The chapter serves as a comprehensive overview of the current state of AI in dental caries diagnosis, its potential benefits, and the road ahead.

This chapter looks more closely at a key narrative motif or character type as a way to explore similar questions about the relationship between visual and verbal narratives. Early Buddhist narratives use striking imagery to distinguish the divine from the human. This is particularly so where the divine is surrounded by beings that are human in more ways than one. The techniques of contrast used in early Buddhist paintings to define that which is divine and distinguish it from the human appear to be grounded in pictorial conventions shaped both by oral and textual traditions, with the oral probably contributing in significant measure. This human-divine distinction – be it in the visual image or in the text – does not stop with form and metaphor; rather, it goes well beyond to visualise complex philosophical concepts. This chapter draws upon examples from the 5th century paintings of Ajaṇṭā to illustrate this point. In doing so, it juxtaposes the visual image with the ‘visual text’ to probe an aesthetic that is philosophical and hence edifying. The chapter also explores the painted image as a distinct mode of communication to better understand how powerful visuals impact the images of the mind, through that transformative phenomenon we know as darśana. As such, it also serves as a bridge to the final part of the volume.

This chapter provides overview of a book that is neither a memoir nor fully a cultural, oral, social, or visual history, but a combination. Above all, this is a “photobiography” of a time and a place called Mississippi. For the first time, the book introduces photos by Otis Noel Pruitt, a white man working in the Jim Crow era of racial segregation of the early to mid-twentieth century. Images were selected after discovering an archive of 88,000 negatives, representing a range of categories: floods of biblical proportion, portraits of people in Sunday-go-to meeting clothes, traveling troupes of entertainers, family reunions, postmortem photographs, and more. Nonetheless, the selection is limited. “Expressive power,” to use photographic historian Deborah Willis’s concept, serves as the guiding principle—whether a photograph emanates an aesthetic beauty or the palpable shock of a lynching. The sequence is purposeful: sublime, perplexing, harsh and with the graces of everyday life.

Introdução: O rambutão (Nephelium lappaceum L.) é um fruto tropical pertencente à família Sapindaceae, amplamente cultivado nos países do sudeste asiático. Este fruto tem um elevado teor de proteínas, antioxidantes e compostos fenólicos. Como o processamento produz uma quantidade significativa de resíduos de casca/semente, é essencial a utilização destes resíduos em aplicações industriais e em suplementos, a fim de combater o desperdício e maximizar a utilização. Objetivo: Analisar a dosagem do fruto de rambutão, bem como os benefícios/malefícios para verificar se deve ser recomendado. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica utilizando as bases científicas PubMed e o ScienceDirect, nos últimos cinco anos, na qual foram inseridas as seguintes palavras-chave: “effects”; “Nephelium lappaceum”; “powder"; “rambutan”; “supplement”. Obtivemos 3079 artigos e 25 foram 16 selecionados após a leitura do título, resumo e texto integral. Resultados: Os compostos fenólicos são responsáveis pela atividade anticancerígena e apoptótica. O teste de toxicidade aguda, durante 14 dias, mostrou que a DL50 do extrato fenólico de casca de rambutão (RPP) é superior a 5000 mg/kg peso corporal (pc) in vivo, sendo que após a administração oral de 5000 mg/kg pc, não se evidenciou qualquer sinal tóxico ou mortalidade. Já no estudo de toxicidade subaguda, durante 28 dias, após administração oral diária de 312 e 625 mg/kg pc, o extrato de RPP não apresentou sinais de toxicidade óbvia. A administração de 2500 mg/kg de pb de extrato de RPP em ratos pode ser tóxica para o tecido hepático e causar danos hepáticos. Conclusão: O rambutão tem grande potencial para ser utilizado em várias áreas, como a farmacêutica, cosmética e alimentar. No entanto, uma das limitações deste estudo é a falta de estudos em seres humanos. Por conseguinte, o desenvolvimento de novas investigações pode contribuir para a melhoria dos conhecimentos neste campo.

The paper examines the perception of time in the Old Icelandic ‘chronicle’ Hungrvaka ‘Awakening hunger’ (13th century) in the aspect of the correlation of local and foreign traditions of time counting and time markers. The paper discusses the specifics of usage of natural temporal names (winter and summer, day and night, etc.), indications of the time of power and death of foreign and Icelandic leaders, the role of genealogies and chronology ‘from the Birth of Christ’, as well as that of church holidays. The author comes to the conclusion about the combination in this work of the old local tradition, dating back to oral literary activity, and a new foreign tradition that came from Latin sources along with the introduction of Christianity. It is argued that the temporal characteristic of Hungrvaka is not reducible to a chronical list of years. A significant place is occupied in it by the ‘natural’ (often specific) and ‘genealogical’ perception of time (characteristic of the tribal community, which did not know the state and royal power), which brings this work closer to the family sagas. At the same time, the correlation of the time of power and death of the Icelandic bishops (and also that of the secular leaders of Iceland) with the time of the power and death of foreign leaders, as well as with the chronology ‘from the Birth of Christ’ serves to elevate Icelanders and Iceland in a world-historical perspective.

Los elementos sonoros son una constante en el trabajo de Marina Abramović. No obstante, su presencia ha sido objeto de escuetos comentarios en la bibliografía especializada. Los pocos textos que se refieren al tema, abordan principalmente su obra temprana de la década de 1970. Autoras como Iles (1995) y Biesenbach (2010), solo se refieren al sonido como temporalidad en las instalaciones y performances realizadas en Belgrado. LaBelle (2006-2014) y Hegarty por su parte, se refieren de manera muy breve al uso de la voz en piezas de video performance como Freeing The Voice y Art Must Be Beautiful, sin aportar mayor información contextual al respecto. Pocos escritos abordan obras posteriores. Richards (2010) menciona la presencia de canciones populares en las obras de la década de 1990, pero las referencias suelen ser tan imprecisas que en ocasiones resulta imposible determinar qué músicas fueron empleadas. A la fecha no se ha realizado ningún estudio en profundidad sobre lo sonoro en la obra de Abramović. Cómo se relacionan el sonido, la escucha y el cuerpo, y qué rol cumple la música en el desarrollo conceptual de sus acciones, constituyen interrogantes aún por explorar. En esta ponencia intento ofrecer una panorámica general sobre el rol de lo sonoro en la obra en solitario de Marina Abramović. A través de un análisis comparado entre la serie Rhythm (1973-74) y las performances Delusional (1994) y Balkan Baroque (1997), intento poner en evidencia el paso del sonido a la música que opera en la artista y cómo ello llega a influir en su concepción de la performance.
