A numerical approach is developed to solve differential equations on an infinite domain, when the solution is known to possess a slowly decaying tail. An unorthodox boundary condition relying on the existence of an asymptotic relation for |y| ≫ 1 is implemented, followed by an optimisation procedure, allowing to obtain an accurate solution over a truncated finite domain. The method is applied to −(−Δ)γ/2u − u + up = 0 in ℝ, a non-linear integro-differential equation containing the fractional Laplacian, and is easily expanded to asymmetric boundary conditions or domains of a higher dimension.

In this note we show that a subgradient multifunction of a locally compactly Lip-schitzian mapping satisfies a closure condition used extensively in optimisation theory. In addition we derive a chain rule applicable in either separable or reflexive Banach spaces for the class of locally compactly Lipschitzian mappings using a recently derived generalised Jacobian. We apply these results to the derivation of Karush-Kuhn-Tucker and Fritz John optimality conditions for general abstract cone-constrained programming problems. A discussion of constraint qualifications is undertaken in this setting.

Let X be a Riemannian manifold and xn a sequence of points in X. Assume that we know a priori some properties of the set A of cluster points of xn. The question is under what conditions that xn will converge. An answer to this question serves to understand the convergence behaviour for iterative algorithms for (constrained) optimisation problems, with many applications such as in Deep Learning. We will explore this question, and show by some examples that having X a submanifold (more generally, a metric subspace) of a good Riemannian manifold (even in infinite dimensions) can greatly help.

AbstractNowadays, hot rolled steel sections are used in practice. The cross‐sectional dimensions are therefore fixed and catalogued by the steel manufacturers. However, when the span of the members and/or the applied load becomes significant, such hot rolled steel sections can no longer meet the ultimate and/or service design criteria and the use of a built‐up welded I‐beam should be considered. They are typically made of three steel plates welded together to form a monolithic I‐beam. By varying the dimensions of these plates, an infinite amount of cross‐section geometries can be defined. But face to this high variability of solutions, the designers encounter difficulties in identifying the most appropriate combination of geometrical and mechanical properties for the constitutive plates. To study and optimise these profiles, a MATLAB® routine has been developed at the University of Liege. It allows, for different load cases, to find suitable cross‐sectional dimensions that minimise the weight and/or the total cost of the element. This routine follows the current recommendations prescribed in prEN1993‐1‐5 and evaluates the possibility of using transverse stiffeners along the web to further reduce the weight and cost of the element. The so‐developed routine is presented in the present paper. Also, the advantage of considering the use of high strength steels for such structural members is discussed to propose recommendations to the designers for the selection of the most appropriate steel grade.

Following a preceding paper showing how the introduction of a t.v.s. topology on quantum groups led to a remarkable unification and rigidification of the different definitions, we adapt here, in the same way, the definition of quantum double. This topological double is dualizable and reflexive (even for infinite dimensional algebras). In a simple case we show, considering the double as the "zero class" of an extension theory, the uniqueness of the double structure as a quasi-Hopf algebra.

Mutually unbiased bases correspond to highly useful pairs of measurements in quantum information theory. In the smallest composite dimension, six, it is known that between three and seven mutually unbiased bases exist, with a decades-old conjecture, known as Zauner's conjecture, stating that there exist at most three. Here we tackle Zauner's conjecture numerically through the construction of Bell inequalities for every pair of integers n,d≥2 that can be maximally violated in dimension d if and only if n MUBs exist in that dimension. Hence we turn Zauner's conjecture into an optimisation problem, which we address by means of three numerical methods: see-saw optimisation, non-linear semidefinite programming and Monte Carlo techniques. All three methods correctly identify the known cases in low dimensions and all suggest that there do not exist four mutually unbiased bases in dimension six, with all finding the same bases that numerically optimise the corresponding Bell inequality. Moreover, these numerical optimisers appear to coincide with the ``four most distant bases'' in dimension six, found through numerically optimising a distance measure in [P. Raynal, X. Lü, B.-G. Englert, {Phys. Rev. A}, { 83} 062303 (2011)]. Finally, the Monte Carlo results suggest that at most three MUBs exist in dimension ten.

AbstractThis paper is concerned with the maximisation of the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Laplacian amongst flat tori of unit volume in dimension $d$ as $k$ goes to infinity. We show that in any dimension maximisers exist for any given $k$, but that any sequence of maximisers degenerates as $k$ goes to infinity when the dimension is at most 10. Furthermore, we obtain specific upper and lower bounds for the injectivity radius of any sequence of maximisers. We also prove that flat Klein bottles maximising the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Laplacian exhibit the same behaviour. These results contrast with those obtained recently by Gittins and Larson, stating that sequences of optimal cuboids for either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions converge to the cube no matter the dimension. We obtain these results via Weyl asymptotics with explicit control of the remainder in terms of the injectivity radius. We reduce the problem at hand to counting lattice points inside anisotropically expanding domains, where we generalise methods of Yu. Kordyukov and A. Yakovlev by considering domains that expand at different rates in various directions.

In the proposed optimisation model two modules (i.e. low fidelity and high fidelity) are incorporated and the basic geometric definition of computer aided design (CAD) is integrated with computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis. The hydrodynamic drag is considered as single objective with constraints on the geometric parameters of dimension, space and volume. The CAD model is implemented in MATLAB*TM and CFD model is implemented in Shipflow**TM. A real-world design example of an existing underwater vehicles is presented. The advanced of Information Technology has resulting in the generation of numerous datasets with different dimensions. However, dealing with multi-dimensional datasets which typically contain large number of attributes, p has cause problems to classification process. Classifying different dimensional numerical data is a difficult problem as dealing with various feature spaces, could cause the performance of supervised learning method to suffer from the curse of dimensionality. This condition eventually degrades both classification accuracy and efficiency. In a nutshell, not all attributes in the dataset can be used in the classification process since some features may lead to low performance of classifier. Feature selection (FS) is a good mechanism that minimises the dimensions of high-dimensional datasets and solve classification problems. This paper proposed Bat Algorithm (BA) for FS that were trained using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The proposed algorithm was tested on six public datasets with different sizes and compared with other benchmark algorithms, such as Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). The experimental results indicated that the BA has outperformed the other two algorithms. In addition, the comparison details showed that binary BA is more competitive in terms of accuracy and the number of features when assessed on datasets with different sizes.

Road traffic safety is a complex system which combines movement of entities in precisely determined space and time dimension. Each of the entities, with their different properties, sets different requirements to road traffic system, including also other entities. Due to the large number of entities and their characteristic requirements, their interaction results in extremely complex relations which determine the behaviour of the road traffic system. The entities are combined according to their common features into certain groups, the movements of which usually result in conflicts. In such situations it is necessary to ensure the movement of a group of entities. This method of insurance necessarily creates negative consequences for all the entities that participate in road traffic system. In order to mitigate as much as possible these consequences, it is necessary to find an adequate method of optimising road traffic system according to a given criterion. The paper uses the results of the analysis of more than 100 road traffic system models and presents the methodology of determining the level of their interconnection. The level of influence of the basic traffic values on the final effect, i.e. the possibility of optimising signal-controlled intersections has been found and described. KEYWORDS: traffic flow, signalized intersection, pretimedsystem, optimization, 2-phase system, 4-phase system, volume-to-capacity, lost time

Future service robots mass-produced for practical applications may benefit from having personalities. To engineer robot personalities in significant quantities for practical applications, we need first to identify the personality dimensions on which personality traits can be effectively optimised by minimising the distances between engineering targets and the corresponding robots under construction, since not all personality dimensions are applicable and equally prominent. Whether optimisation is possible on a personality dimension depends on how specific users consider the personalities of a type of robot, especially whether they can provide effective feedback to guide the optimisation of certain traits on a personality dimension. The dimensions may vary from user group to user group since not all people consider a type of trait to be relevant to a type of robot, which our results corroborate. Therefore, we had proposed a test procedure as an engineering tool to identify, with the help of a user group, personality dimensions for engineering robot personalities out of a type of robot knowing its typical usage. It applies to robots that can imitate human behaviour and small user groups with at least eight people. We confirmed its effectiveness in limited-scope tests.

This paper proposes a method for solving optimisation problems involving piecewise quadratic functions. The method provides a solution in a finite number of iterations, and the computational complexity of the proposed method is locally polynomial of the problem dimension, i.e., if the initial point belongs to the sufficiently small neighbourhood of the solution set. Proposed method could be applied for solving large systems of linear inequalities.

The idea of hybrid approaches have become a powerful strategy for tackling several complex optimisation problems. In this regard, the present work is concerned with contributing with a novel optimisation framework, named learning-based linear balancer (LB2). A regression model is designed, with the objective to predict better movements for the approach and improve the performance. The main idea is to balance the intensification and diversification performed by the hybrid model in an online-fashion. In this paper, we employ movement operators of a spotted hyena optimiser, a modern algorithm which has proved to yield good results in the literature. In order to test the performance of our hybrid approach, we solve 15 benchmark functions, composed of unimodal, multimodal, and mutimodal functions with fixed dimension. Additionally, regarding the competitiveness, we carry out a comparison against state-of-the-art algorithms, and the sequential parameter optimisation procedure, which is part of multiple successful tuning methods proposed in the literature. Finally, we compare against the traditional implementation of a spotted hyena optimiser and a neural network approach, the respective statistical analysis is carried out. We illustrate experimental results, where we obtain interesting performance and robustness, which allows us to conclude that our hybrid approach is a competitive alternative in the optimisation field.

Due to some limitations of current heuristics and evolutionary algorithms, this paper proposed a new swarm based algorithm for feature selection method called Social Spider Optimization (SSO-FS). In this research, SSO-FS is used in the EEG-based emotion recognition model as searching method to find optimal feature set to maximize classification performance and mimics the cooperative behaviour and mechanism of social spiders in nature. This proposed feature selection method has been tested on DEAP EEG dataset with six subjects and compared with the most popular heuristic algorithms such as GA, PSO and ABC. The results show that the SSO-FS provides a remarkable and comparable performance compared to other existing methods. Whereby, the max accuracy obtained is 66.66% and 70.83%, the mean accuracy obtained is 55.51 7.17 and 60.97 8.38 for 3-level of valence emotions and 3-level of arousal emotions classification respectively.

One of the biggest challenge in the field of deep learning is the parameter selection and optimization process. In recent years different algorithms have been proposed including bio-inspired solutions to solve this problem, however, there are many challenges including local minima, saddle points, and vanishing gradients. In this paper, we introduce the Whale Optimisation Algorithm (WOA) based on the swarm foraging behavior of humpback whales to optimise neural network hyperparameters. We wish to stress that to the best of our knowledge this is the first attempt that uses Whale Optimisation Algorithm for the optimisation task of hyperparameters. After a detailed description of the WOA algorithm we formulate and explain the application in deep learning, present the implementation, and compare the proposed algorithm with other well-known algorithms including widely used Grid and Random Search methods. Additionally, we have implemented a third dimension feature analysis to the original WOA algorithm to utilize 3D search space (3D-WOA). Simulations show that the proposed algorithm can be successfully used for hyperparameters optimization, achieving accuracy of 89.85% and 80.60% for Fashion MNIST and Reuters datasets, respectively.

Standard methods for computing the fractal dimensions of time series are usually tested with continuous nowhere differentiable functions, but not benchmarked with actual signals. Therefore they can produce opposite results in extreme signals. These methods also use different scaling methods, that is, different amplitude multipliers, which makes it difficult to compare fractal dimensions obtained from different methods. The purpose of this research was to develop an optimisation method that computes the fractal dimension of a normalised (dimensionless) and modified time series signal with a robust algorithm and a running average method, and that maximises the difference between two fractal dimensions, for example, a minimum and a maximum one. The signal is modified by transforming its amplitude by a multiplier, which has a non-linear effect on the signal’s time derivative. The optimisation method identifies the optimal multiplier of the normalised amplitude for targeted decision making based on fractal dimensions. The optimisation method provides an additional filter effect and makes the fractal dimensions less noisy. The method is exemplified by, and explained with, different signals, such as human movement, EEG, and acoustic signals.

In this paper, we consider the NP-hard problem of finding the minimum resolving set of graphs. A vertex set B of a connected graph G resolves G if every vertex of G is uniquely identified by its vector of distances to the vertices in B. The cardinality of the minimal resolving set is the metric dimension of G. The metric dimension appears in various fields such as network discovery and verification, robot navigation, combinatorial optimization and pharmaceutical chemistry, etc. In this study, we introduce a hybrid approach (WCA_WOA) for computing the metric dimension of graphs that combines the water cycle algorithm and a whale optimisation algorithm. The WOA algorithm hybridises the WCA in order to obtain the optimal result and manage the optimization process. The results of the experiments show that the WCA_WOA hybrid algorithm outperforms the WCA, WOA, and particle swarm optimization methods

Over the past decades, the rising energy prices and imposing environmental regulations have motivated manufacturers to improve the energy efficiency of their manufacturing processes. Manufacturers need to also consider energy efficiency in addition to classical performance measures. The additional performance dimension (energy-related indicators) significantly increases the complexity of classical production planning problems (e.g. scheduling), already known as NP-hard problem). To overcome the inherited complexity, an integrated simulation-optimization framework is proposed. The proposed approach tackles scheduling problem in a multi-product/multi-machine manufacturing environment and optimizes several production objectives simultaneously. A case study is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach in a real-life industrial facility.
