Abstract This paper analyses the relationship between the German Kiel Institute of World Economics and the Rockefeller Foundation in the years 1925-1950. It focuses on the role of politics in the promotion of science and shows the great difficulties the foundation had in developing a strategy to react to the Nazi’s seizure of power in 1933. The Kiel Institute disguised itself as an unpolitical and “objective” institute and managed to regain support after 1934. During the Second World War, the Rockefeller Foundation abandoned the idea of science as an area detached from politics by definition. In the late 1940s, it carefully reassessed the German academic landscape and, in the case of the Kiel Institute, came to the conclusion not to resume a significant amount of support.

The Kakuma Refugee Camp (including the nearby Kalobeyei Camp) in the Turkana Desert of northwestern Kenya is home to approximately 200,000 refugees from 21 countries. The camp was established in 1992 to accommodate approximately 40,000 “Lost Boys” who walked there from their villages in Sudan. I have heard many experienced humanitarian aid workers describe Kakuma as the worst place in the world. In Dave Eggers book, What is the What, Lost Boy Achak Deng, after surviving for years as a child wandering across deserts and swamps in Sudan and eventually reaching Kakuma, describes it as “a place in which no one, simply no one but the most desperate, would ever consider spending a day” (Eggers, 2007).

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to make a critical analysis of the views put forward by Claudio Gnoli (2018) in this paper concerning philosophical problems in library and information science (LIS). Design/methodology/approach The paper presents the basic ideas in Gnoli (2018) and discusses the set of basic assumptions, concepts and conclusions put forward. Findings It is argued that the idea of the theory of levels is basically sound, but we do not need to consider the material world, the mental world (minds) and the world of mentefacts as three different worlds. They represent different levels with different kinds of emergent properties in the world. Further, although the concepts of artifacts and mentefacts are useful, there are other terms within LIS, such as document, work and object that have been influential and should be discussed in this context. It is also argued that subjective vs objective knowledge is often confused with private vs public knowledge, which is problematic. Finally, it is claimed that the cognitive view and the “sociological view” are not about two different levels of reality but are competing views about the same reality. Originality/value The paper clarifies some aspects of the analytical framework of domain analysis and adds to the developments of the philosophical dimensions of information within LIS.

Anthropological Foundation of Dialogue The dialogue of the society in the post-communist countries seems to be a problem. Both the post-communist countries and in the countries with a long democratic tradition are developing the postmodern individualistic mentality. On the orther hand, the world is becoming a unity, throug economic and productive processes. A man tries to solve his own problems, yet he is not prepared to share his own life and participate in the community. This is the one of the greatest problems of the so-called postmodern society. Present world is full of conflicts, not only in level of Islamic and the Christian world, but we, people of dialogue can solve them.

In his The Conduct of Inquiry in International Relations, Patrick Jackson identifies four distinct ways of studying world politics: ‘neopositivism’, ‘critical realism’, ‘analyticism’ and ‘reflexivity’. According to him, they all fall under the broad umbrella of ‘science’ but they each stem from a distinct philosophical foundation. In his view, which foundation one subscribes to is a matter of faith, which leads him to advocate pluralism. He classifies the underlying philosophical foundations in terms of two criteria: ‘mind–world dualism’ versus ‘mind–world monism’ and ‘phenomenalism’ versus ‘transfactualism’. Through a step-by-step analysis of his complex text, I show that what divides (1) neopositivism, (2) analyticism and (3) critical realism and reflexivity (classed together) is not in fact their philosophical foundations but the nature of the questions they ask, each reflecting distinct human interests. Accordingly, while praising Jackson’s philosophical vigilance against the dominance of neopositivism, I conclude by pointing to a need to consider the political underpinnings of different modes of knowledge production.

ABSTRACTThe rapid infrastructure development is one of the indicators on the country economic progress. Indonesia as one of the largest archipelagic countries in the world, should be prioritized the port infrastructure to support the maritime. One of the government’s solutions is infrastructure development of Kuala Tanjung port. This research analyzed bearing capacity and settlement of single and group pile foundation on port infrastructure of Kuala Tanjung so it is known that the port is safe to use. The data used are Standard Penetration Test data with soil stratigraphy that is clay and sand. The type of foundation used is Concrete Spun Pile 1000 mm and 600 mm with a pile length of 36 meters. The data are then analyzed by manual calculation and Allpile 6.5E program based on Reese method and methods such as Vesic and Converse-Labarre. The results showed that single pile foundations of 1000 mm and 600 mm each had allowable capacity (Qall) 492.78-538.81 ton and 110.65-128.31 ton, with vertical load (Q) of 330.90 ton, settlement 0.56-1.17 cm and 3.32-3.64 cm, lateral deflection 27.50 cm and 94.90 cm. While the 1000 mm and 600 mm pile group foundations respectively have Qall 8717.31-10796.29 tons and 2059.25-2566.32 tons, with Q of 6618 tons, settlement 0.56-1.68 cm and 3.32-3.64 cm, lateral deflection of 2.49 cm and 19.49 cm. The conclusion of the research indicates that the safe pile foundation used is 1000 mm group pile foundation. Keywords: Bearing Capacity; Foundations; Pile Foundation; Port Infrastructure; Settlement

The foundation as the form activation of the of disabled and elderly personsThe purpose of this article is to describe foundations, which are one of the most popular form of social activities next to associations. The author presents the foundation as a good way to the mobilization of disabled and elderly people. In the first part of the article the author presents a brief history of the development of foundations. The next section presents legal grounds of foundation in the Polish law. This ground is the Law of Foundation, dated 1984. Additionally, the article presents a comparison of the two forms of the social activities: foundations and associations. The most important differences are: Foundations — the main component of it are assets donated by the sponsor. Associations — people who create this form of social activity are the main component. Foundations — governing board holds the control over foundations; other organs are optional. Associations — authorities comprise of assembly of association members, governing board and an obligatory internal audit office. Foundation — directs its activities and represents it to the world; cannot direct its activities to the governing board. Associations — activities can be directed to the world but also to the members of the association. The article also presents a definition of economic activity and foundations’ possibilities to take such activities. The author describes his own experience at the foundation created by teachers and graduates from his former school for blind children. The article presents common challenges newly starting foundations have to face, the most important of which is the problem of vague evaluation criteria for applications in competitions organized by public authorities and problems with acquiring source of funds for their activity. In the last part of the article the author presented areas of activities performed by foundations working for disabled and elderly persons. The main scope is, of course, taking care of the elderly and disabled, but also facilitating the access to culture, art and the organization of tourist trips. The above mentioned activities are more and more needed and a lot of organizations are developing these areas.

It is obvious that contemporary design and construction of unique buildings and structures is unthinkable without mathematical (numerical) and computer modelling and advanced analysis ofload-bearing structures under various kinds ofloads and impacts. One of the most ambitious and important construction projects is the uniquelarge-span structures. These are, in particular, stadiums, sports palaces and water parks, shopping malls, pedestrian, road and railway bridges of various design solutions. The distinctive paper is devoted to theoretical foundations and results of mathematical (numerical) modeling of the state (in terms of the analysis of stress-strain state, strength and stability) of football stadiums built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Finite element method is used for approximation and high-precision numerical solution of corresponding boundary problems of structural mechanics. It is the most universal and powerful numerical method of mechanics. The paper, in particular, describes some features of development of finite element models and the main results of the analysis of the mechanical (structural) safety of three- dimensionallarge-span systems "soil foundation - reinforced concrete structures of foundations and stands - steel structures of the coating and facades" of these football stadiums with the basic and specialload combinations. In addition, the key procedures of scientific support during the corresponding expertise and assessments are outlined. Generally, socially significant and knowledge-intensive problem of providing mechanical (constructive) safety of unique combined objects of construction (three-dimensional systems "foundation - reinforced concrete structures of foundations and stands - steel structures of coating and facades") has been solved at a new level as a result of the performed complex of research works.

The proofs of God's existence is the subject matter of the article. Four main types of proofs are analyzed: cosmological, teleological, ontological and moral. It is argued that there is a general scheme of theistic reasoning present in all four types of proving. The principal feature of this scheme lies in recognizing a ground of everything existing which goes beyond the material (or natural) world. Possible naturalistic arguments excluding a non-material, super-natural foundation of the world are also analyzed. The objections to naturalistic arguments are formulated, making it possible to assert that the natural world cannot be explained from itself. Nor it can be explained from its physical (or natural) part. At the same time, the material world needs an explanation. To meet this need, the extended direct theistic arguments are formulated in the article. They begin with the fact of there being something and include two aspects of theistic argumentation: one is to establish the existence of immaterial foundation of the natural world; another is to demonstrate that this immaterial foundation may be identified with the world subject – omnipotent, omniscient, all-good, immaterial rational being which mainly corresponds to God of theistic religions. The conclusion is made that the thinkability and rationality of the idea of God is provable. One can argue that the idea of God more rationally explains the world. Moreover, it is evident that theism is rational, naturalism (as the principle of the general explanation of everything) is irrational. But the question remains how rational the world is.

Britain's emergence as one of Europe's major maritime powers has all too frequently been subsumed by nationalistic narratives that focus on operations and technology. This volume, by contrast, offers a daring new take on Britain's maritime past. It brings together scholars from a range of disciplines to explore the manifold ways in which the sea shaped British history, demonstrating the number of approaches that now have a stake in defining the discipline of maritime history. The chapters analyse the economic, social, and cultural contexts in which English maritime endeavour existed, as well as discussing representations of the sea. The contributors show how people from across the British Isles increasingly engaged with the maritime world, whether through their own lived experiences or through material culture. The volume also includes essays that investigate encounters between English voyagers and indigenous peoples in Africa, and the intellectual foundations of imperial ambition.

The University of Groningen has been an international university since its foundation in 1614. The first professors formed a rich international community, and many students came from outside the Netherlands, especially from areas now belonging to Germany. Internationalization, a popular slogan nowadays, is therefore nothing new, but its meaning has changed over time. How did the University of Groningen grow from a provincial institution established for religious reasons into a top-100 university with 36,000 students, of whom 25% come from abroad and almost half of the academic staff is of foreign descent? What is the identity of this four-century-old university that is still strongly anchored in the northern part of the Netherlands but that also has a mind that is open to the world? The history of the university, as told by Klaas van Berkel and Guus Termeer, ends with a short paragraph on the impact of the corona crisis.

This book presents the bold and original proposal to replace the general appellation of ‘world cinema’ with the more substantive concept of ‘realist cinema’. Veering away from the usual focus on modes of reception and spectatorship, it locates instead cinematic realism in the way films are made. The volume is structured across three innovative categories of realist modes of production: ‘noncinema’, or a cinema that aspires to be life itself; ‘intermedial passages’, or films that incorporate other artforms as a channel to historical and political reality; and ‘total cinema’, or films moved by a totalising impulse, be it towards the total artwork, total history or universalising landscapes. Though mostly devoted to recent productions, each part starts with the analysis of foundational classics, which have paved the way for future realist endeavours, proving that realism is timeless and inherent in cinema from its origin.

Even during the artist's lifetime, contemporary art lovers considered Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) to be an exceptional artist. In this revelatory sequel to the acclaimed Rembrandt: The Painter at Work, renowned Rembrandt authority Ernst van de Wetering investigates the painter's considerations that determined the striking changes in his development from an early age onwards. This gorgeously illustrated book explores how Rembrandt achieved mastery by systematic exploration of the 'foundations of the art of painting'. According to written sources from the seventeenth century, which were largely misinterpreted until now, these 'foundations' were considered essential at that time. From his first endeavours in painting, Rembrandt embarked on a journey past these foundations, thus becoming the 'pittore famoso', whom Count Cosimo the Medici visited at the end of his life. Rembrandt never stopped searching for solutions to the pictorial problems that confronted him; this led over time to radical changes that cannot simply be attributed to stylistic evolution or natural development. In a quest as rigorous and novel as the artist's, Van de Wetering reveals how Rembrandt became the revolutionary painter that would continue to fascinate the art world. This ground breaking exploration reconstructs Rembrandt's theories and methods, shedding new light both on the artist's exceptional accomplishments and on the theory and practice of painting in the Dutch Golden Age.

AbstractThis chapter explores the structure, practises and methods of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a legitimate scientific institution and its interplay with the global political decision-making forum of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). By examining the successes and shortfalls of the IPCC process and comparing these with Technology Assessment (TA) theory and practice, we investigate whether such an institutionalised process of co-design between governments and researchers could serve as a potential global TA model. We identified four central challenges including: (a) a lack of impact through initiating action based on current government commitments, (b) the pursuit of consensus-based and situated knowledge, (c) reporting inaccuracies leading to mistrust, and (d) accessibility of information across different scales. We suggest there is potential for each of these deficiencies to be addressed using existing analytical and impact TA frameworks, resulting in more authentic and accepted outcomes from a global governance perspective. Highlighting that this may also help to build trust in science advice at the country and community level. By applying a critical lens to the IPCC process as one potential global TA model, we argue that with the addition of grassroots participatory TA, alongside traditional governance and reporting frameworks, there is potential to deliver holistic solutions on a range of global challenges.

AbstractWhy are some people in the Arab region more likely than others to vote in elections? Why do some countries but not others have higher levels of satisfaction with their healthcare systems? Why is domestic violence more prevalent in some communities or neighborhoods than others? What causes some people but not others to become more politically engaged, or less politically engaged, over time? Every day, we come across various phenomena that make us question how, why, and with what implications do they vary across people, countries, communities, and/or time. These phenomena—e.g. voting, satisfaction with health care, domestic violence, and political engagement—are variables, and the variance they express is the foundation and the point of departure for positivist social science research. The present chapter considers variables one at a time and focuses on descriptions of variance.

AbstractThis chapter discusses some contributions that Mexican and Latinx phenomenologists have made to the critical phenomenology of home, i.e., the experience of “being at home in the world”—an experience that has always been both deeply cherished and bitterly contested. Tracing a line of thought that runs from the work of two Mexican phenomenologists in the 1940s and 1950s (Jorge Portilla and Emilio Uranga) to the work of two contemporary Latinx phenomenologists in the U.S. (Gloria Anzaldúa and Mariana Ortega), we find a shared view that the Mexican and Latinx experience has been marked by zozobra, an anxious condition characterized by the inability to be at home in the world. However, these philosophers disagree about the source of this zozobra, and even whether zozobra is something that should overcome or embraced and celebrated. Reading these thinkers together, we learn that home is several things simultaneously: an essential foundation for human existence; an illusory ideal whose pursuit leads us to exclude vulnerable others and vulnerable parts of ourselves; and a site for the negotiation of the circumstances in which one finds oneself, in the tragic and beautiful hope of creating a life to call one’s own.

AbstractEast German foreign trade was one of the least productive sectors of the economy. Its institutional organization, based on the foreign trade monopoly, isolated the economy from the international markets. East German firms traded with their foreign trade firms, but not with their suppliers and clients. Its theoretical foundation was weak. Ricardian comparative cost was its starting point. The insistence on the labor theory of value, from which Ricardo deviated in this context, made it difficult to calculate comparative cost advantage and the gains from trade. In addition, a price equalization scheme obscured specialization possibilities and thus inhibited rational foreign trade planning. Trade was executed on two separate markets, with the socialist world and with the non-socialist world. Pricing idiosyncrasies with multiple effective exchange rates made it impossible to obtain consistent aggregate statistics. Finally, foreign trade performance was camouflaged and kept secret in order to hide the true situation from the outside world.

Chapter 4 draws on ethnographic fieldwork at the educational program of one of the Nike Foundation’s NGO grantees in Brazil to illuminate how the Girl Effect is predicated on finding adolescent girls with an imaginedthird world potential to end poverty. The chapter uses the NGO’s search for adolescent girls with this “unique potential” as a lived and embodied way of understanding how the category of the adolescent girl is constructed through the logic of the Girl Effect. The analysis elucidates how the Nike Foundation understands this potential, who embodies it, and the consequences of who is excluded from it.

If both the external and the internal world turn out to be less solid than we initially thought, one thing we can still hold on to is the certainty that something is real, even if the external world is not, and even if we and our internal world are not. This, of course, is the belief in the existence of an ultimate foundation that grounds all existence. This chapter considers a series of challenges to this idea. It begins by evaluating possible arguments for the existence of such a foundation, and then describes attempts to establish its opposite, a non-foundational view of reality, also considering what role this non-foundational view plays in particular sciences, such as mathematics, physics, and cognitive science.

Abstract The 1920s laid the foundation for the Great Depression. The Treaty of Versailles and the peace settlement after World War I imposed an excessive and politically unpalatable level of debt on Germany. Between 1922 and 1924, Germany’s hyperinflation created uncertainty and drove the economy to collapse. By the late 1920s, international stability had been achieved as many counties rejoined the gold standard and international trade and capital flows accelerated. The gold standard was now a “gold-exchange standard” meaning countries backed their currencies with international reserves. Capital flows were “recycled” through Europe and back to the United States. A fragile and fraught international economic environment prevailed. The credit boom of the 1920s, along with a number of institutional and economics weaknesses, heightened the chances of global financial crisis. The crisis began in 1928, after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates.

The concept presented in this report makes a summary of the author’s attempts to find a solution to the problem of compatibility of determinism and the freedom of human choice. This problem becomes apparently an isoluble paradox if one admits that the notion of freedom of human choice includes negation of the predetermination of decisions taken. Denial of such an "inclusion" is based on an analysis of the reasons that have led to the notion of freedom of human choice. Basically, this notion is intimately linked with the actual mechanism of decision-making. However, the concept of freedom of human choice is not identical to this mechanism and should be regarded as a perception and self-interpretation of this mechanism by humans.

The design and construction of foundation systems for metro rail projects require effective planning and performing analysis over various alternatives in achieving a suitable cost-effective solution. Often the foundation system is selected based on the Soil Bearing Capacity (SBC) and other onsite constraints are left unconsidered. This results in costly design changes during the execution stages and incurs severe delays in the project. This demands the application of advanced managerial techniques to select costeffective solutions during the design stages of metro rail projects. Value Engineering is one such function-oriented approach used in analyzing the functions of a product or a process and selecting a suitable solution that achieves all the required functions at the lowest possible cost. The application of the value engineering concept in metro rail projects would enable identifying suitable solutions while considering different alternatives over several criteria. Hence, this paper applies value engineering technique for selecting the suitable foundation type for the construction of metro rail projects. A case study of an ongoing metro rail project was considered and three foundation alternative types and nine significant selection criteria were identified. The foundation alternatives were quantitatively analyzed using the weighted evaluation technique. The results indicate that for limited availability of Right of Way (ROW), the foundation with Controlled Low Strength Mortar (CLSM) is highly suitable. In scenarios of limited ROW with less SBC use of pile foundation is identified as a suitable cost-effective foundation type.

To evaluate numerically the vibration behaviour (stability and unbalance response) of rotor bearing foundation (RBF) systems such as turbomachinery which incorporate rotors running in several flexibly mounted hydrodynamic bearings, one needs input data parameters which adequately describe the bearings, the rotor, the foundation, the unbalance state and the system configuration state (the relative transverse alignment of the bearings). Adequate parameters for the last three are particularly hard to obtain for existing installations; and worldwide effort has been devoted to trying to identify these parameters, using field obtainable measurements of the instantaneous relative displacements between the rotor journals and their respective bearing housings. These measurements are then processed using Reynolds equation to determine the instantaneous bearing reaction forces acting on the rotor and foundation, which forces are then an essential ingredient of the desired parameter identification procedures [1]. The problem is in the accuracy to which one can reliably calculate these forces, even if it be assumed that Reynolds equation is otherwise a perfect model. This is felt to be particularly problematical because of the nonlinearity introduced into the RBF system by the hydrodynamic bearings.

These past few years have challenged and altered every one of us. To recollect the innumerable racial and social injustices, the rise of devastating natural disasters from climate change, and the Covid-19 pandemic with the ensuing economic recession is to recognize how much we—as a collective society—have endured and continue to endure in the struggles and hardships issued upon us each day. Nearly every city has taken the brunt of upheavals or revolutions, with episodes continually exploding in local townships and municipalities across the country and around the world. Whether one lives in a booming metropolis or a small town, it is evident that communities that implement creative and empathetic interventions—in response to these events and transformations—can catalyze profound effects to the built environment and the human experience. Students in an urban design studio at Cornell University were asked to take a stand – a stand on their work and position of manifesting ideas from concept development to design intervention, from position to proposition. The studio asked students to answer what is the value of design and what is the role of the designer? Alongside conversations on climate change, social equity and design empathy, how does conjuring the unknown, speculating upon possibilities, and imagining constructed futures all occur without a voice? How can one hold onto their values and position, while engaging others through the intricate, and sometimes elusive, design process?

This study aims to examine the informal statistical reasoning processes students perform to sense and comprehend the distribution. In two activities that we applied to eight students in the 11-13 age range, we examined students’ statistical reasoning skills throughout their modeling processes to help them develop a foundation. We observed that students were able to create distribution displays in the activities that we applied, to express some statistical concepts, and to elaborate and analyze distribution representations. We explained the modeling process that students experienced during the activities, according to the RISM framework. One of the significant results that we have obtained is that when students can see the distribution as a whole, they realize the spread of the distribution, the center of the distribution, the variability of the distribution, and their probabilistic thinking increases when they express it through various samples.

The Gülen movement’s educational mission is, at its core and in its praxis, remarkably simi- lar to the centuries-old Jesuit educational tradition. It can be argued that both educational movements are united in a shared mission today –a deep concern for the spiritual freedom of the individual and a commitment to the betterment of the world. Both movements seek to instil values such as honesty, dedication, compassion and tolerance. To achieve this goal, students are offered a narrative of the past as a foundation on which to build an understanding of the modern world. Furthermore, they are educated holistically – in ethics and social justice as well as the sciences – what Gülen calls a ‘marriage of mind and heart’. This paper focuses on four shared values of education: commitment, responsibility, virtue and service. Within this framework, themes found in the Gülen educational movement, such as the Golden Generation and the concept of hizmet, are compared to similar Jesuit notions such as A.M.D.G., cura personalis, and ‘Men and Women for Others’. Differences and nu- ances are also addressed in the paper. The discussion aims to highlight the importance of values-oriented education in the modern world. The Gülen–Jesuit educational nexus is one positive bridge to inter-religious understanding and, importantly, collaborative action. The educational endeavors associated with the Turkish-Muslim Gülen movement have popu- larized, possibly more than any other facet of the group, Fethullah Gülen’s mission to prom- ulgate and cultivate an individually transformative Islam in the modern world. As the teach- ers and business partners of the Gülen movement continue to work to form conscientious, open-minded and just students in different cultures across the world, they will continue to be challenged and influenced by a myriad of different perspectives, religions, and socio-political groups; and, in turn, they will succeed in positively influencing those same cultures, as they have in many cases already. Of the many groups with which the Gülen movement has inter- acted in its ever-expanding intercultural milieu, this paper will focus on one: the educational charge of a Roman Catholic religious order called the Society of Jesus, a group more com- monly known as the Jesuits. This paper shows that the educational mission of the Gülen movement is, at its core, remark- ably similar to the mission of the centuries-old Jesuit Catholic educational tradition. In fact, it can be argued that the Gülen and Jesuit educational missions are, in theory and in praxis, united in a shared mission today; one that is rooted in a deep concern for the spiritual free- dom of the individual and dedicated to the betterment of the world. In analyzing this shared mission, this paper aims to discuss the importance of values-oriented education; particularly by addressing how the Gülen-Jesuit educational nexus can act as one positive bridge to inter- religious understanding and, importantly, cooperation and action in our transitioning world. In order to achieve this end, this paper begins with a short analysis of each movement’s back- ground with regard to education. Afterwards, the each movement’s notion of religious educa- tion is discussed. Finally, the focus turns to the mission themes the educational movements have in common. While there is a plethora of shared mission traits from which one could choose, for practical purposes this paper uses as its foundation for comparison four themes distilled by William J. Byron, S.J., from a mission statement from Georgetown University, the Jesuit university in Washington, D.C., which reads: Georgetown seeks to be a place where understanding is joined to commitment; where the search for truth is informed by a sense of responsibility for the life of society; where academic excellence in teaching...is joined with the cultivation of virtue; and where a community is formed which sustains men and women in their education and their conviction that life is only lived well when it is lived generously in the service of others (Byron 1997, 653). The first of these themes is a commitment to the understanding that God works in the world through people. The second is a responsibility to raise individual students to act justly in and for the world. The third is virtue, with the understanding that the way to achieve the mission of these schools is through educating students to be morally upright. Finally, the fourth theme is the need to be actively engaged in service to make the world a more peaceful, tolerant and just place to live. Commitment, responsibility, virtue, and service are, significantly, foundational for not only Jesuit schools, but Gülen schools as well.

Introduction. Today, jet-grouting of soils has proven itself as an effective technology capable of solving various geotechnical problems. One of the areas of jet-grouting technology is to create soil-cement elements with specified strength and deformation parameters. Example of consolidating the foundation of tunnel lining of the operated track tunnels illustrates the possibility of successful use of jet-grouting technology in the space restricted by tunnel lining dimensions and limited by working hours during the so-called “night windows”. Aim. Determining the possibility of carrying out works using jet-grouting technology restricted by limited time conditions and tunnel lining dimensions. Materials and methods. To solve the set task and test the initial theoretical principles, empirical work was carried out on a trial site, with further analysis and adjustment of the results obtained. Results. A highly effective step-by-step scheme for the installation of soil-cement reinforced elements was developed, which for the first time in the world practice made it possible to carry out works to strengthen the tunnel lining in the operated metro tunnels. Conclusions. As part of the project to consolidate the foundation of the tunnel using jet-grouting technology, for the first time in the world practice, 1,120 soil-cement piles were installed in the operated metro track tunnels. This allowed to abandon the permanent water reduction system, as well as to operate tunnels in a standard mode, without any limitations of train speed.

<p>Sustained excessive deflection is a widespread problem of long-span prestressed concrete box girder bridges. Meanwhile, various cracks are widely present in such bridges. However, some cracks are not interpretable according to traditional beam element model. In this paper, a refined finite element model called the spatial lattice grid model (SLGM), developed by the authors, which fully considers the three-dimensional effects of the box girder, is used to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the cracking causes of a long-span bridge having detailed inspection data. The analysis includes cracks that cannot be accurately or even cannot be explained by traditional beam element model. For this research, a unified identification and explanation of all structural cracks discovered during bridge inspection is achieved only using one model. The methodology presented in this paper will lay the foundation for subsequent research on the sustained excessive deflection problem.</p>

In the last two years, the United States has reversed the post-World War II trend toward the lowering of trade barriers and a commitment towards multilateral free trade. Citing a need to “level the playing field” and hold trading partners accountable to their commitments, the current Administration has moved towards a more protectionist and perhaps mercantilist position vis-à-vis trade policy. One of the Administration’s first actions in this regard was the decision to leave the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, followed thereafter by raising tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The Administration’s actions on trade are likely to have significant implications for U.S. farmers as these actions target three of the largest markets for U.S. agricultural exports – Canada, China and Mexico – accounting for some 44%, and representing an average of $63 billion, of U.S. agricultural exports 2013 to 2015. <em>Commissioned by the <a href="https://www.farmfoundation.org/">Farm Foundation</a></em> <strong><a href="https://www.farmfoundation.org/forums/2019-farm-foundation-forums/u-s-and-canadian-perspectives-on-trans-pacific-trade/">Farm Foundation Forum</a></strong> (March 4, 2019) <ul> <li><a href="https://soundcloud.com/user-254829763/us-canadian-perspectives-on-trans-pacific-trade">Forum audio</a></li> <li><a href="https://www.farmfoundation.org/trade/">Food and Agricultural Trade Resource Center</a></li> </ul> <strong><a href="https://www.farmfoundation.org/forums/2018-farm-foundation-forums/oct-31-2018-farm-foundation-forum/">Farm Foundation Forum</a></strong> (October 31, 2018) <ul> <li><a href="https://brianallmerradionetwork.wordpress.com/2018/10/31/10-31-18-a-closer-look-at-the-purdue-universitys-global-trade-analysis-project-regarding-usmca-with-purdue-ag-economist-dominique-y-van-der-mensbrugghe-ph-d/">van der Mensbrugghe Interview</a></li> </ul>

In the aftermath of Japanese occupation and the Korean war, South Korea built a schooling system that today is consistently ranked among the top five countries worldwide for reading and mathematics, and in the top ten for science in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) (OECD, 2014). Its consistent high ranking against wealthier countries, as well as the role of education in transforming Korea’s economy while retaining a relatively low (4.3 percent) level of spending as a portion of GDP (World Bank, 2022), has cemented its reputation among low- and middle-income countries as a model to emulate. As a result, South Korea has transformed itself in a few decades from one of the world’s poorest countries at independence, to the world’s fifteenth largest economy (Ministry of Education, 2015) with much of this attributed to an educational system which first prioritised a consistent, quality foundation of reading and basic maths for students regardless of gender, wealth, or region.

Horizontality is a salient social phenomenon of the last decade. It asserts itself against hierarchies in social movements and countless other collective practices around the world. It constitutes a characteristic of an emergent sociality that demands the attention of the social sciences. The 2010s are a moment as important as “the Sixties”, a time when Ivan Illich called for the development of tools of conviviality, and horizontality may be categorized as one of them. Today’s horizontality may be related to that of populations that have been the focus of anthropologists interested in their longstanding propensity to work against the affirmation of the authority of commanding. Public squares, roundabouts, and the courtyards of apartment buildings welcome the early symptoms of democratic experimentation that circulates also among groups, collectivities, and associations with varied purposes. In all these places, equality asserts itself and cuts across differences. The Yellow Vests and an educational cooperative in São Paulo are the empirical foundation of this study.

Tomato yellow leaf curl geminivirus (TYLCV) is a major pathogen of cultivated tomato, causing up to 100% crop loss in many parts of the world. In Israel the disease is well known and has an economic significance. In recent years viral symptoms were found in countries of the "New World" and since 1997, in Florida. Surprisingly, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of TYLCV interaction with the host plant cells. This proposal was aimed at expanding our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which TYLCV enters the host cell nucleus. The main objective was to elucidate the TYLCV protein(s) involved in transport of the viral genomic DNA into the host cell nucleus. This goal was best served by collaboration between our laboratories one of which (V.C.) was already investigating the nuclear import of the T-DNA ofAgrobacterium tumefaciens, and the other (Y.G.) was studying the effect of TYLCV capsid protein (CP) in transgenic plants, hypothesizing its involvement in the viral nuclear entry. Three years of our collaborative work have provided signifcant data that strongly support our original hypothesis of the involvement of TYLCtr CP in viral nuclear import. Furthermore, our results have laid a foundation to study fundamental, but as yet practically unresolved, questions about the role ofthe host cell factors in the nuclear import of geminiviruses within their host plant. As a result, this research may lead to development of new approaches for plant protection based on control of TYLCV import to the host plant cell nucleus.

This is the final report on a three-year QUT-led research project that was conducted for The Puuya Foundation (2019-2023). Our brief was to: Assist the Puuya Foundation to develop and implement a Social Impact Evaluation Strategy (the Strategy) to strengthen the Foundation’s evaluation approach and build on the outcomes of the Foundation’s education and health projects in the Lockhart River region. The strategy will develop a robust approach with practical tools to measure the social impact of the Foundation’s programs, and the outcomes and learnings that emerge from these findings will inform the design, implementation and evaluation of all projects and programs delivered by the Foundation. As a practical outcome a social impact assessment framework has been co-created and tested in partnership with the Puuya Foundation and the Lockhart River community. The co-creative and codesign process is grounded in respect, reciprocity, and self-determination. Co-creation consciously seeks to have low barriers for participation across all aspects of the research, experiment with culturally meaningful modes of place-based communication and are suited to shared decision-making (Hancox, 2021). This process also aims to ‘address power differences, level hierarchies and connect hearts and minds of participants and stakeholders’ (Langley, Wolstenholme & Cooke 2018, 6). This has been made possible through the facilitative leadership of Board Director, Kirsty Davis and CEO Emily Schuh in these final years. This report details the methods or steps we have taken together from February 2021 to October 2023 and provides detail of our collaboration. The research team were initially informed by the foundational ‘Puuya Approach’: holistic thinking; shared learning; connectivity; partnerships and collaboration; opportunities for action; skills and knowledge; personal motivation, confidence, and commitment; valuing others; hope and determination; and authentic relationships to ensure our evaluation strategy aligned with, as well as collaborated and respected Puuya Foundation and Lockhart River community ways. The outcome has exceeded our hopes in that the co-designed evaluation framework has already been adopted beyond the use of just the Puuya Foundation and taken up by the community more broadly as their own for determining and designing new initiatives, to provide a methodology in grant applications, through to gauging the success of projects and programs. The framework is rightfully known in Lockhart River as ‘their’ (social impact) framework. Our aim that an active, meaningful framework for and by community would be co-created through this project.

This paper formed part of a Conference "Mercosur: In Search of a New Agenda"; held in the Getulio Vargas Foundation in Rio de Janeiro in June 2003. The purpose of the Conference was to was to examine future directions for Mercosur in light of emerging political dynamics pointing to renewed interest in deepening the initiative after a turbulent 1999-2002. The papers and the conference were supported by the Integration and Regional Programs Department of the Inter-American Development Bank through its Special Initiative on Trade and Integration. The Department is grateful for the collaboration of the Foundation and in particular to Professor Renato Flores. Mr. García Pelufo¿s thesis states that Mercosur will recover under stable conditions simply because its originating reasons and motivations are still current. In view of similar regional and global conditions it is to be expected that the Southern Cone countries will generate the same responses from the previous decade vis à vis similar facts. However, the trauma of recession will leave its consequences. It will probably stimulate the reformulation of an integration model that will contemplate the need to coordinate Mercosur international insertion on a compatible basis, and will take into account the size asymmetry among Mercosur members and the fact that the larger country lacks a currency solid enough to become the reference for the bloc.

While there are multiple discussions regarding what HSS is, the most popular and cited definition is that of the World Health Organization (WHO). It says: “HSS is the process of identifying and implementing the changes in policy and practice in a country’s health system, so that the country can respond better to its health and health system challenges. Additionally, it is also an array of initiatives and strategies that improves one or more of the functions of the health system and that leads to better health through improvements in access, coverage, quality, or efficiency” (WHO, 2019, p. 11). Scope of this rapid review: The aim of this rapid review is to provide a rapid synthesis of the different frameworks and approaches that have been designed and proposed for HSS. The synthesis includes frameworks conceptualised by international development and health agencies as well as those proposed by individual researchers and smaller organisations. While there are multiple frameworks, many of these frameworks build upon the WHO (2007) HSS framework and adapt this as per their needs and perspectives. Furthermore, considering the shake-up of health systems due to the COVID 19 pandemic, this review also includes frameworks which have reconceptualised HSS in response to the pandemic’s impact on health systems. Key findings: The rapid review found that a multitude of HSS frameworks exist in the public health literature. Some of these frameworks are modified from the WHO (2007) building blocks frameworks or use this framework as a basic conceptual foundation to propose new frameworks. Furthermore, there is some conflation of health systems frameworks and HSS frameworks in the literature. This review, however, has focused specifically on HSS frameworks. Evidence base: The frameworks and approaches were extracted from agency documents, journal articles and grey literature.

Eamer, J. B. R., C. Greaves e E. L. King. The science questions underpinning the potential for offshore wind turbines on Atlantic Canada's continental shelves. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/331697.

Offshore wind farms typically host tens to hundreds of turbines that are individually sited on foundations or anchored if floating. These are connected by inter-farm cables which feed into one or more marine-based substations, further feeding one or more shore-connected high-voltage cables - all infrastructure that requires knowledge of water depth, metocean conditions, and seabed/subsurface geology. With this industry set to establish itself on the continental shelf of Atlantic Canada, knowledge of the geological conditions from the seabed to tens of metres below will be essential for farm layout and foundation design. Thus, geoscience questions addressing regional geomorphology, Pleistocene glacial retreat and sea-level change, the characteristics of key individual stratigraphic layers, and the magnitude and patterns of sediment mobility are important. In Atlantic Canada, ongoing efforts to address these questions are using legacy data, but new data is required to further our understanding of the shallower portions of the shelf. Examples include: what is the distribution of buried tunnel valleys under offshore banks, and might their complex facies infill affect foundation conditions? How and where would the organic sediments, left by a coastal suite of landforms drowned during transgression, affect foundation or landfalling cable stability? How active is salt diapirism, and could it be considered a geohazard? Are demonstrated sediment mass failures also a risk? What is the current understanding of sediment mobility in shallow waters, and how does that affect infrastructure armouring/depth of burial? What is the variability of the geotechnical properties of our offshore sediments? What is the foundation suitability of offshore Tertiary semi-consolidated bedrock? To conclude, the initial scope of a developing regional foundation suitability model will be presented for the Eastern Scotian Shelf.
