An investigation was carried out on incidence and pathology of fascioliasis in deer of Chittagong Zoo and some houses of Chittagong city during the period from January 2001 to June 2004. A total of 57 domesticated deer of various types were examined to diagnose the fascioliasis in Chittagong zoo and some house deer of Chittagong city. By faecal examination out of 44 cases 34 (77.3%) were positive for fascioliasis, of which, 15 (34.1%) cases were recorded in Chittra deer, 12 (27.3%) in Maya deer, 05 (11.4%) in Shambar deer and 02 (4.5%) in Nathrini deer. In post mortem examination, fascioliasis found in 13 (100%) cases, of which, 08 (61.5%) from Chittra deer and 05 (38.5%) from Maya deer. The overall incidence of fascioliasis in deer was 82.5%. In relation to sex the fasciolasis was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in female (82.6%) than male (71.4%) deer. The incidence of fascioliasis in various types of deer in relation to age was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in age group of above 2 years old than in age group below 2 years old. The gross examination revealed enlarged livers with round edges and thickened capsule with numerous haemorrhagic spots on the parietal surface (subacute form). In chronic form, the livers were cirrhotic and reduced in size. The affected intra-hepatic bile ducts were protruded and were engorged with flukes. Microscopically the migratory tracts were represented by the presence of haemorrhagic, oedema and infiltration with numerous eosinophils mixed with few lymphocytes. The wall of the bile ducts was thickened with fibrous tissue proliferation and the lining epithelium showed hyperplastic changes.

This study examined the effect of color on the naming process in children for pictures of increasing vocabulary difficulty levels. Picture-naming reaction times and accuracy rates were measured for both black and white line drawings and color drawings in 30 normally developing children, ages 4, 6, and 8 years, via a tachistoscopic viewing paradigm. Statistical analysis of reaction time data revealed that color affected speed of naming only when the vocabulary level of the picture was within the developmental range of the child. That is, for vocabulary within an emerging period for the child, colored drawings were named significantly faster than black and white line drawings. However, color did not significantly influence speed of naming for pictures either for vocabulary well established in the child’s lexicon or for vocabulary above the child’s developmental age. Statistical analysis of accuracy data revealed significant color by vocabulary interactions. Specifically, when the vocabulary level of the pictures exceeded chronological age level, children named color drawings with significantly higher accuracy rates than black and white line drawings.

This study offers a quantitative solution that automates the creation of a historical timeline starting with old drawings from the beginning of the 18th century and ending with present-day photographs of the Old City of Jerusalem. This is performed using GIScience approaches, computer vision, and deep learning. The motivation to select the Old City of Jerusalem is the substantial availability of old archival drawings and photographs, owing to the area’s significance throughout the years. This task is challenging, as drawings, old photographs, and new photographs exhibit distinct characteristics. Our method encompasses several key components for the analyses: a 2D location recommendation engine, which detects an approximate location in the image of 3D landmarks; 2D landmarks to 3D conversion; and 2D polygonal areas to 3D GIS polylines conversion. This is applied to the segmentation of built areas. To achieve more accurate results, Meta’s Segment Anything model was utilized, which eliminates the need for extensive data preparation, training, and validation, thus optimizing the process. Using such techniques enabled us to examine the landscape development throughout the last three centuries and gain deeper insights concerning the evolution of prominent landmarks and features such as built area over time.

In this qualitative exploratory study, 35 drawings of crawly things and their context from 18 pupils 7-8 years old were analysed. In addition, focus group interviews with 6 of the pupils about their drawings were conducted. The study shows that the students' personification of the small animals decreased considerably from drawing 1, which they drew before the science lesson, to drawing 2 which they drew after the lesson. The natural context of the drawings, on the other hand, increased after they had observed and examined the small crawlies in nature. In the interviews with the researcher did the students expressed processes and stories that were not contained in their drawings.

The present thesis explores the link between children's drawings and cognitive development. The aim of this study is to investigate the intellectual abilities of the child draughtsman with good depiction skills and to evaluate the merit of the drawing technique in the assessment of conceptual maturity. The standardised Goodenough-Harris Drawing Test (GHDT) of intellectual maturity was administered to 115 children between 4 to 8 years of age against criterion ability measures (Wechsler scales). Its psychometric properties are examined in respect to its norms and scales, its reliability and validity at different age levels and ranges of intelligence. Early theories in the area of pictorial representation were directed towards identifying features characteristic of different developmental periods (Kerschensteiner, 1905; Luquet, 1927/1977). At the same time Piaget and Inhelder (1948/1967) incorporated these stage theories into their model of spatial intelligence. Yet, the recent experimental study of children's drawings has disclosed a number of variables which interfere during the course of production, challenging the view that drawings can be seen as the royal route to access children's concepts. Stage theories are re-evaluated by means of fourteen experimental drawing tasks with various degree of difficulty. The tasks - administered to the same children tested with the standardised instruments -are spatial in nature and have been sampled from two widely researched areas related to the pictorial representation of partial occlusion and of spatial axes (horizontal/vertical). The acquisition of the pertinent spatial concepts by means of drawings is examined, considering competence-deficiency and competence-utilisation accounts of children's performance at different ages. Finally, overall perfomance on spatial tasks is compared with performance on conventional (Wechsler scales) and non-verbal (GHDT) measures of intellectual functioning, considering the optimum method to assess children's abilities by means of drawings. In general, drawing performance is reasonably sensitive to children's level of intelligence, yet the significance of drawing varies at different ages and ranges of IQ. Finally, the establishment of steadfast developmental trajectories falls short in the field of pictorial representation. The variable performance, particularly from the children at intermediate ages, suggests that the stages of intellectual or visual realism should be seen as relative and not as absolute.

This study explored and described the varying ways a group of 6-8-year-old children understood sustainability-related topics and issues. The findings of this study revealed children’s understandings were experienced across six increasingly complex and inclusive action-orientated categories: Providing; Regulating; Educating; Helping; Innovating; and Connecting. This study drew on the theory and methodology of phenomenography. The implications from this research are relevant to teaching practice and may shift the ways teachers, and educators think about the competence and capability of young children to be involved in addressing complex and multifaceted issues that are relevant to their lived world.

The research project we are presenting focuses on the study and the reconstruction of the personality and artworks of Giulio Benso, a Genoese painter, draftsman and architect between Mannerism and Baroque, a specialist in illusionist decoration. The dispersion of a third of his works, in particular altar paintings and some fresco decorations, combined with the large number of graphic projects of different quality which have been attributed to him in recent decades have generated a bad reputation for his work, too often considered as a second-rate one compared to his contemporaries. In this study, his artistic activity will therefore be analyzed and contextualized using archival documents and ancient sources, from his training at the Academy of Giovanni Battista Paggi, a Genoese cultural environment, to the numerous Ligurian and foreign orders - German and French - assigned to him during his life, in order to highlight the contacts, the relationships with certain artists such as Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo and Giovanni Battista Carlone, the inspirations according to the Lombard, Venetian, Bolognese and Roman schools. The experiences he had and that allowed him to evolve in his work and to communicate his style to the successive generations of painters will also be taken into account. This analysis has been conducted in a precise and rigorous manner, by highlighting the existing documents on the artist, on his life and his works. The in-depth study of all the modern contributions published so far on him, on Genoa and on the Genoese school of the 16th and 17th centuries, has been enriched by documentary research in the various archives establishments of the Liguria region and by the examination of ancient sources, such as guides and manuscripts on the artistic production of the territory, with the aim of establishing the complete artistic activity of the painter, including destroyed paintings and frescoes, in order to highlight its evolution and the relationships with its contemporaries. This work thus presents an introductory part concerning the critical fortune lived by the painter during his life and after his death. This is followed by the second, which is focused on the study of his training at the Paggi Academy and on commissions for paintings and trompe l'oeil decorations received in Liguria. Then, a third chapter is devoted to missions abroad: in Germany, in Weingarten, described through the epistolary relationship between the artist and the sponsor Gabriele Bucellino, thanks to the old documents that were found and the letters transcribed by the heir of Benso, father Lorenzo Sertorio, and in France, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, in Provence, for which the vast iconographic and iconological program of the decor, chosen by the family, with a strong political reference has been studied. This study then presents two catalogs. One devoted to painting and the other to graphic production. The first follows a chronological order by mission, including lost or destroyed orders, thereby seeking to offer a reading of the painter’s artistic investment in the social and cultural framework of Liguria, Germany and France. Long-term orders such as those from the Annunziata del Guastato in Genoa from 1638 to 1647 or those for Weingarten from 1627 to 1667 are processed in their unit to facilitate the analysis of their development. This is followed by the catalog of drawings presented chronologically. The study of Giulio Benso's graphic production requires a rigorous and scientific analysis based on stylistic as well as technical and documentary checks. Studies conducted in the past on the artist's drawings have revealed many attribution problems, which involve reordering. It is therefore proposed to try to establish the complete corpus of his graphic work by re-examining all the sheets attributed to him and those of the Genoese school kept in public and private collections

The common situation of Taiwan rural communities is population outflow. The communities hoped youngsters would return hometown through developing local culture or industry. While community empowerment had already been an important issue of national culture policy, many enthusiasts made great efforts to promote the work of communities vitalizing in all places of Taiwan by taking advantage of their own specialties. Colored drawing in communities is the common method of reconstructing communities in Taiwan in recent years. Colored drawings brought the communities crowds of visitors, which created job opportunities and made youngsters return to their hometown. Besides of owning local agricultural specialties, Jing-Pu community had built “the cat world of Jing-Pu community” in recent years. They made effective use of the old houses, walls and vacant lots in the community to serve as walls for colored drawings, planting flowers and grass and decorating arts etc., which regenerated the community and brought crowds of visitors. This research confirmed the basis of assessing analytic hierarchy structures on the key success factors of the colored drawings vitalizing old communities, which brings crowds of visitors after brainstorming with specialists and scholars through relevant theoretical literatures, and at the same time designed official questionnaires on the basis of the analytic hierarchy process to make an investigation in the mode of expert questionnaires, and made data analysis on the result of investigation to confirm the impact of 5 evaluation criteria of “visual arts”, “financial support”, human resource”, “environmental convenience” and “promotion” and 22 items of evaluation indexes, to discuss the factors of the colored drawings vitalizing the cat world of Jing-Pu communities bringing crowds of visitors.

Following old master drawings within the collections of selected Czech collectors Abstract This thesis is a contribution to the history of collecting in Bohemia. It deals with the collecting of drawings and tracks them within the selected collections and collectors. It focuses primarily on the old master drawings, defined as works from the 16th to the 18th century. Within the issue of collecting the attention is, even when studying specific personalities, often paid to the picture galleries rather than the print collections. Due to its fragile nature, drawing tends to fit into the background and, if it does not form the main part of the collection, is not reflected. Many of the collections and collectors have come to attention lately, but many still await their appreciation and introduction into new contexts. AbstractThe production of small batches to single parts has been increasing for many years and it burdens manufacturers with higher cost pressure. A significant proportion of the costs and processing time arise from indirect efforts such as understanding the manufacturing features of engineering drawings and the process planning based on the features. For this reason, the goal is to automate these indirect efforts. The basis for the process planning is information defined in the design department. The state of the art for information transfer between design and work preparation is the use of digital models enriched with additional information (e.g. STEP AP242). Until today, however, the use of 2D manufacturing drawings is widespread. In addition, a lot of knowledge is stored in old, already manufactured components that are only documented in 2D drawings. This paper provides an AI(Artificial Intelligence)-based methodology for extracting information from the 2D engineering and manufacturing drawings. Hereby, it combines and compiles object detection and text recognition methods to interpret the document systematically. Recognition rates for 2D drawings up to 70% are realized.

AbstractPast research on children’s concepts of God has suggested a developmental tendency moving from anthropomorphic to non-anthropomorphic representations. Besides replication, we tested a model of de-anthropomorphization. Methods. We collected drawings of God (N = 532) from 5- to 17-year-old children in French-speaking Switzerland and constructed a model of anthropomorphism and de-anthropomorphization. Age, gender, and religiosity (i.e., schooling) were utilized as predictor variables in logistic regression analyses. Results. Consistent with past research, both age and religious schooling facilitated the occurrence of non-anthropomorphic God representations. Analyses on de-anthropomorphization revealed that age had a positive effect on most strategies (with one exception), and that schooling did not play a significant role in that regard, neither did gender. Discussion. The current findings move beyond binary oppositions concerning anthropomorphic God figures, which appear to be conceptually much more complex than previously anticipated. Theoretical as well as practical implications are discussed.

Abstract The attribution of Old Master drawings is approached from the standpoint of a seasoned cataloguer working in an auction house whose responsibilities include the accurate description of works of art submitted by a third party for evaluation, together with an assessment of their likely range of value if offered at public sale. While I am frequently called upon to express opinions on, and sometimes to prepare catalogue entries for, categories such as Old Master and British pictures, British watercolors and drawings up to the beginning of the twentieth century, and original prints by old and modern masters, it may be more illuminating to concentrate on the process I follow with Old Master drawings of all schools, my first love and my main area of expertise.

Abstract In this book (a work in which memory is also imaginative reinvention the garden was actually nearer 20 acres), Mary Butts recalls woods, an orchard, terraces, kitchen gardens and the customary retinue of attendants: maids, cooks, gardeners, a coachman who wore the livery colours of the family. There was a room full of drawings and watercolours by William Blake which had come into the family through Thomas Butts, friend and patron of Blake. It was, as Butts claims with the grieving hindsight of the 1930s, a ‘profoundly English life; in the very last years of the old Queen, little had been changed since her accession.

Abstract Most fossils of what I refer to here as ‘early vertebrates’ are about 470 to 250 million years old. They are unattractive, often fragmentary or crushed, and are pre¬ served in very hard rocks. Amateur palaeontologists therefore prefer them when reconstructed, as museum dis¬ plays, drawings, or paintings, and scientists like to see them in textbooks as line drawings illustrating transformation series. Such reconstructions are the ultimate result of a lengthy process of collection, preparation, comparison, and interpretation. One of the purposes of this book is to show how this work was—and still—is done, and how scientists have struggled with these miserable remains over more than a century and a half to integrate them into the classification of the vertebrates and into the evolutionary history of life.

Abstract A large number of engineering drawings which are being used in the industry today are old drawings which were created manually on paper using conventional drafting methods. The benefits of the existing CAD/CAM systems are not available to these drawings since these drawings were created on paper. Hence, an automated system which will scan and convert these drawings into CAD files recognizable by the existing CAD/CAM systems is very desirable. An important element in the conversion process is the automatic recognition of dimensional information which is used to denote the exact size and location of the various entities in the drawing. This paper discusses a system which has been developed to recognize the dimension sets from the vectorized image. The recognized dimension sets are then integrated with the geometry of the object using a variational geometry approach to rectify the errors which are introduced during scanning and initial vectorization of the drawing. The drawing obtained after processing consists of an accurate vectorized representation of the geometry in terms of lines, arcs, and circles and a vectorized representation of the dimension sets.

At the same time, there is a lack of common methodology for condition assessment of existing bridges (road, railway, pedestrian). Another issue is that there is no Bridge Management Data System, where the information from visual inspections, condition assessments and as-built drawings could be uploaded and used for further operations like regular maintenance activities, prioritization of repair works, planning budget and costs of the relevant authorities. Different structural types of bridge structures in Sofia are described in the paper. The advantages and disadvantages of the considered bridge types with respect to reliability and maintenance are analysed. Several bridges of different types are chosen in order to evaluate their condition based on visual inspection. Possibilities and advantages for implementation of condition assessment rating system based on numerical estimation are discussed.</p>

Graphical communication has traditionally been a basic part of the mechanical engineer’s education. The production and reading of drawings have long been considered an attribute of ‘literate’ engineers. Today, that assumption is under attack, as is the very definition of a drafting course. Typical questions include “Why should we teach pencil/paper drawing in an AutoCAD age?” “Why not just teach solids modeling and forget the old-fashioned stuff?” At Mercer University we teach in the sophomore year a single two-semester-hour laboratory course containing three modules: pencil-and-paper drawing, computer-aided drawing, and solids modeling. The course attempts to balance the presentation and mastery of traditional descriptive geometry principles and skills with the need to prepare engineers for practice. The goal in each module is to teach enough skill to provide a base for experience and future learning in both course work and professional practice. The approach in each module is to start with the basic skills of that particular method, and progress to the production of working and assembly drawings. Rationale and learning objectives for the course are presented, as well as representative examples of assignments and projects.

The church of Taxiarches is one of the most important monuments of the Paleologan era in Thessaloniki. During its long life, it underwent several modifications, that blurred its original dedication and func- tion. The present study investigates the building phases of the monument and attempts their dating. It bases the research on architectural drawings, old and updated, morphological and constructional observations, Byzan- tine and modern written sources, painting analysis and dating, and urban location evidence. The study argues that Taxiarches should have been the Hilandar metochion in Thessaloniki founded by St. Savas Nemanjić at the dawn of the thirteen century and dedicated to St. George. The church itself was built on a pre-existing structure. The Nemanjić church was burnt and collapsed. In 1316−17 it was restored and decorated by King Milutin.

The Old Solvent Tanks (OST), located at the Savannah River Site (SRS) Old Radioactive Waster Burial Ground (ORWBG), are comprised of 22 underground storage tanks that were used to store spent radioactive solvent and aqueous wastes generated from the plutonium-uranium extraction (PUREX) process. The OSTs were installed at various dates between 1955 and 1968 and used to store the spent solvents until 1974. The spent solvents stored in the OSTs were transferred out from 1976 through 1981 leaving only residual liquids and sludges that could not be pumped out. Final remediation goals for the ORWBG include an overlying infiltration control system. If the tanks were to structurally fail, they would collapse causing potential for onsite worker exposure and release of tank contents to the environment. Therefore, as an interim action, methods for stabilizing the tanks were evaluated. The preferred remedial action was “Grouting of the Tank Wastes In-situ.” The primary function of the grout is to provide structural stability of the tanks by filling void space with material that prevents tank collapse. Incidental to any mixing that may occur, residual material in the tanks will be incorporated into the grouting mixture. The incidental grouting will ultimately improve environmental protection by rendering the residual material immobile. To accomplish this task, the SRS Environmental Restoration Division (ERD) teamed with the Savannah River Technology Center (SRTC) to determine a remedial design strategy and to translate this strategy into a construction specification and drawings for implementation. The OST remedial design strategy contained the following key aspects for performance requirements and acceptance criteria: • Grout mix; • Tank atmosphere testing; • Grout delivery system and camera monitoring system; • Off-Gas HEPA filter system and environmental monitoring; • OST Sealing and labeling. From November 2001 through February 2003 all 22 Old Solvent Tanks were successfully stabilized. This paper will discuss the systems designed to perform and monitor the grouting operation, the grouting process, and the radiological controls and wastes associated with grouting the Old Solvent Tanks.

Abstract The use of the tethered BOP at Petrobras intends to enable the operation of Dynamically Positioned Rigs in shallow waters, allowing drilling or workover in wells in congested areas or subject to environmental restrictions due to corals or marine fauna. The BOP tethering technology also allows the use of newer generation rigs, whose BOPs are larger and heavier, in old wells not designed for such loads. ROV and surface images of the critical moments for the BOP tethering show the lessons learned in this operation, such as schematics and drawings of improvements implemented or suggested for future opportunities. During the operations, many opportunities for improvement were identified, such as: the ideal drilling schedule to launch the anchors with the Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessel (AHTS); the imprisonment of the cables by the cement of the surface casing in the mud line; the knots that occurred in the cable after replacing the tensioner system; the feasibility to use the rig drill string instead of an RSV to replace the tensioner; and the need of unlatching the BOP to replace the tensioner system, with suggestions to avoid this in the future. The challenges overcome in this operation allowed the development of new solutions and procedures for tethering the BOP, dispensing with the use of a RSV, and improving the contractor's initial procedure. The success of this system enables rig operations in several locations that are currently unfeasible, whether for plug & abandonment of old wells or for drilling new locations in shallow water. The first use of tethered BOP in association with real-time Riser Analysis in Brazil resulted in the reduction of the risk associated with an emergency disconnection, providing a larger operational window and a more accurate analysis of well structure fatigue.

The authors of the paper represent two firms that have completed hundreds of challenging subgrade and foundation projects for the rail industry. The intent of this paper is to educate the railroad business in general about alternative approaches to common geotechnical problems facing the railroad industry. Projects have been completed across the country in nearly all geological conditions, on all of the Class I carriers, Shortlines and Mass Transit systems. Successful remediation projects associated with challenging subsurface conditions across the United States, Canada and Mexico are covered. Case histories include jet grouting for low headroom earth retention and tunnel support, stone columns for embankment support, micropiles for low headroom bridge replacement, micropiles and soil nails for earth retention, compaction, and urethane grouting for settlement of existing structures. Projects discussed include background information such as project layout, drawings and test results. Each project is completed and has a positive track record, indicating success. Projects have been specially selected to demonstrate the ability of specialty foundation solutions applicable throughout North America. Each topic provides technically sound approaches to age-old Rail road subsurface challenges. Many of these topics are not addressed in the AREMA manual; however, one of the authors, is currently addressing these topics through a proposed section of AREMA chapter 8.

The Burgess-Capps Cabin is located on the US Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1975 under the name of “Pioneer Cabin.” The building is currently not occupied but used as a history interpretive site. It is one of the few log cabins that remain in this part of Colorado from the time of European settlement. All buildings, especially historic ones, require regular planned maintenance and repair. The most notable cause of historic build-ing element failure or decay is not the fact that the historic building is old, but rather, it is caused by incorrect or inappropriate repair or basic neglect of the historic building fabric. This document is a maintenance manual compiled with as-is conditions of construction materials of the cabin. The secretary of interior’s guidelines on rehabilitation and repair per material are discussed to provide the cultural resources manager at USAFA a guide to maintain this historic building. Additional chapters include information regarding the historic materials and a structural analysis. This report satisfies Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966 as amended and will help USAFA’s Cultural Resources Management Office to manage this historic building.
