We reported the first record of the rare species Trocheta subviridis Dutrochet, 1817 (Arhynchobdellida, Erpobdellidae) from north-eastern Spain (Suspiro stream at Señorio de Bértiz Natural Park, Navarra, Spain). The species was previously recorded in Spain by Cordero del Campillo (1980) and García Más and Jiménez (1981). However, the latter authors admitted (Garcia Más & Jiménez, 1984) that both citations could be considered erroneous due to a misinterpretation by Cordero del Campillo of Blanchard (1893) (Jueg, 2008). Thus, considering the limited and uncertain information about T. subviridis in Spain, we can argue that our specimen is the first valid record reported for the species in the Iberian Peninsula.

This article presents a study based on the outputs from the LUISA Territorial modelling platform (Joint Research Centre of the European Commission) focused on regional and local future projections of land abandonment between 2015 and 2030. Spain is taken as representative of one of the countries highly affected by agricultural land abandonment in the European Union. The most relevant factors driving land abandonment (biophysical, agroeconomics, farm structure and demographic) are described and mapped. Results from the analysis reveal that the Galicia region, northern Spain (Asturias, Cantabria, Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia), north-eastern Spain (Aragón region), central Pyrenees/Ebro basin (Huesca, Navarra, Lleida) and south-eastern Spain (Murcia, Almería, Alicante, Málaga) are expected to undergo important abandonment processes. The study also concludes that land abandonment within mountainous, high nature value farmland and Natura 2000 areas is lower compared to the outside area without conservation and protection measures.

South-eastern Spain is one of the driest regions in Europe and thus, prone to drought. Terrestrial climate records covering the late Glacial and Holocene from this area are sparse. Here, we present a flowstone record from Cueva Victoria, south-eastern Spain, which covers the late Glacial (15 ka) to the mid-Holocene (7 ka) including the Younger Dryas (YD). Between the onset of the Bølling/Allerød (B/A) and the early Holocene, flowstone δ18O values progressively decrease in accordance with sea-surface temperatures in the Alboran Sea, indicating an increase in precipitation in south-eastern Spain and a supra-regional signal of North Atlantic temperature change. At the same time, decreasing δ13C values suggest progressively increasing precipitation and vegetation density. This trend is interrupted by both colder and drier conditions during the YD. Between 9.7 ± 0.3 and 7.8 ± 0.2 ka, a large positive excursion of the δ13C values indicates a strong reduction in vegetation density, probably as a consequence of very dry spring/summer conditions. In combination with the continuously low speleothem δ18O values and a nearly unchanged growth rate, this suggests increased seasonality (i.e. drier spring/summer conditions, but not a strong reduction in annual precipitation). This is consistent with several other climate records from the Western Mediterranean region, showing that the Western Mediterranean realm (Spain, Italy) experienced pronounced spring/summer drought during this time interval. Interestingly, the timing of this dry period coincided with the African Humid Period. This may be part of a teleconnection with the North African Monsoon via the Hadley cell circulation.

In the present study we investigated variations in leaf respiration in darkness (RD) and light (RL), and associated traits in response to season, and along a gradient of soil moisture, in Mediterranean woodland dominated by holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) in central and north-eastern Spain respectively. On seven occasions during the year in the central Spain site, and along the soil moisture gradient in north-eastern Spain, we measured rates of leaf RD, RL (using the Kok method), light-saturated photosynthesis (A) and related light response characteristics, leaf mass per unit area (MA) and leaf nitrogen (N) content. At the central Spain site, significant seasonal changes in soil water content and ambient temperature (T) were associated with changes in MA, foliar N, A and stomatal conductance. RD measured at the prevailing daily T and in instantaneous R–T responses, displayed signs of partial acclimation and was not significantly affected by time of year. RL was always less than, and strongly related to, RD, and RL/RD did not vary significantly or systematically with seasonal changes in T or soil water content. Averaged over the year, RL/RD was 0.66 ± 0.05 s.e. (n = 14) at the central Spain site. At the north-eastern Spain site, the soil moisture gradient was characterised by increasing MA and RD, and reduced foliar N, A, and stomatal conductance as soil water availability decreased. Light inhibition of R occurred across all sites (mean RL/RD = 0.69 ± 0.01 s.e. (n = 18)), resulting in ratios of RL/A being lower than for RD/A. Importantly, the degree of light inhibition was largely insensitive to changes in soil water content. Our findings provide evidence for a relatively constrained degree of light inhibition of R (RL/RD ~ 0.7, or inhibition of ~30%) across gradients of water availability, although the combined impacts of seasonal changes in both T and soil water content increase the range of values expressed. The findings thus have implications in terms of the assumptions made by predictive models that seek to account for light inhibition of R, and for our understanding of how environmental gradients impact on leaf trait relationships in Mediterranean plant communities.

Three species of the genus Asterina are known to inhabit the Mediterranean Sea and the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean: Asterina gibbosa (Pennant, 1777), A. pancerii (Gasco, 1870) and A. phylactica Emson & Crump, 1979. Differentiation of these species has primarily been based only on subtle characters (some highly debatable), such as colour or size. Therefore, this study aimed to review the morphological data characterising members of the genus, to incorporate new characters that may clarify morphological analyses and to couple morphological data with molecular evidence of differentiation based on the analysis of partial sequences of the cytochromec oxidase subunitI (COI) and 18S rDNA (18S) genes and two anonymous nuclear loci (AgX2 and AgX5). The different lineages and cryptic species identified from the molecular analysis were then morphologically characterised, which was challenging given the limited number of diagnostic characters. Two of the five monophyletic lineages obtained molecularly (COI divergence >4%), further supported by differences in morphological characters and reproductive behaviour, are proposed as new species: Asterina martinbarriosi, sp. nov. from the Canary Islands, Spain (eastern central Atlantic Ocean) and Asterina vicentae, sp. nov. from Tarragona, north-eastern Spain (western Mediterranean Sea).

Resumo:
A phytoclimatic homologation between Spain and Turkey is established with two main different objectives: the establishment of the degree of diffusion or originality of the Turkish phytoclimates, and facilitate the exchange of forest material and forest techniques. A search of homologous stations between 375 Turkish stations and more than 600 Spanish have been made, by a paired comparison method. Two affinities categories (loosens and strict) were used and incorporated to special cartographic bases. A 13.34 % of the Turkish surface, located in the maritime periphery of the country was defined as loose –homologous with Spain. The phytoclimatic subtypes better represented in these homologous areas were the Mediterranean (especially the Spanish IV4) and the nemoromediterranean (especially the Sapnish VI(IV)1). The homologous subtypes of predominantly nemoral component are located in north European Tracy and pontic shores, especially in their western half, less affected by the continental influence of asiactic origin. On the contrary, the homologous subtypes of predominantly Mediterranean component are located in the southern European Tracy and in the coastal Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. In the strict homologation process 143 Turkish stations were selected. The IVi Turkish subtypes represent 5/6 of the all the strict homologous stations. The rest (1/6) corresponds to nemoromediterranean Turkish subtypes VI(IV)i (20 stations) or Turkish nemoral VI and VI(V) (9 stations). In Turkey, the homologous regions are located in the margins of the Anatolian Peninsula close to the Mediterranean, Pontic and Aegean seas, and in the western-most parts of the circum–anatolian ring. In the Iberian Peninsula, the strict homologous stations are mainly located south-eastern and south-estern regions, and in a lesser extent the north-eastern region.

Resumo:
Tree plantations have been proposed as suitable carbon sinks to mitigate climate change. Drought may reduce their carbon uptake, increasing their vulnerability to stress and affecting their growth recovery and resilience. We investigated the recent growth rates and responses to the climate and drought in eight Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) plantations located along a wide climate gradient from wetter sites in south-eastern France and north Spain to dry sites in south-eastern Spain. The cedar growth increased in response to the elevated precipitation from the prior winter to the current summer, but the influence of winter precipitation on growth gained importance in the driest sites. The growth responsiveness to climate and drought peaked in those dry sites, but the growth resilience did not show a similar gradient. The Atlas cedar growth was driven by the total precipitation during the hydrological year and this association strengthened from the 1980s onwards, a pattern related to the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). High winter NAO indices and drier conditions were associated with lower growth. At the individual level, growth resilience was related to tree age, while growth recovery and year-to-year growth variability covaried. Plantations’ resilience to drought depends on both climate and tree-level features.

Spain currently produces around 7000 million litres of mineral water a year, of which about 20% is produced in Catalonia, and there is a need for greater regulation and research into bottled waters and their impact on human health. A total of 29 samples were analysed from different brands of commercially bottled water, and 71 chemical elements were determined in each sample. The aim was to classify each brand based on composition, compare lithological origins, verify compliance with international standards for drinking water, and report benefits for human health. More than 60% of the samples were of the calcium bicarbonate type, had a low mineral content, and were associated with granitic aquifers, ranging from leucogranites to granodiorites. In contrast, 17% were of the sodium bicarbonate type, had harder waters, and were related to thermal springs. The thermal springs of the bottled waters from the Montseny-Guilleres massif (Vichy Catalán, Malavella, and San Narciso) emerge at a temperature of 60 °C with their own natural gas. Two samples exceeded European standards for As and Hg concentrations in water for human consumption, while one showed a concentration of U greater than that set out in international recommendations.

A further 69 recaptures are reported from a tagging study of pelagic sharks initiated in 1970 in the north-east Atlantic. Galeorhinus galeus tagged in England were recaptured in the eastern Atlantic from southern Spain to north-west of Iceland. Among the 42 G. galeus recaptured the longest time at liberty was about 12 years and the greatest distance travelled was 2461 km. Among the 21 Prionace glauca recaptured the l ongest time at liberty was 10.7 years, and seven sharks moved distances between 4362 and 7176 km. One shark tagged in south-west England was recaptured in the South Atlantic off South America. An Isurus oxyrinchus was at liberty for 4–6 years and a Lamna nasus for up to about 13 years. Lamna nasus were recaptured from northern Norway to northern Spain. The growth rates of the tagged sharks were close to the predicted values for G. galeus, were slower for P. glauca and faster for L. nasus.

In the north-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, the pleurobranchid genus Pleurobranchaea Leue, 1813 is represented by two species, Pleurobranchaea meckeli (Blainville, 1825) and Pleurobranchaea morosa (Bergh, 1892). The former is a well-known species distributed from northern Spain to Senegal and the Mediterranean Sea, while the second is a poorly-described species. In this contribution, species delimitation analyses (ABGD and COI/16S p-distances) identified a third undescribed Pleurobranchaea species from samples collected in south-western UK waters and the Gulf of Cadiz (SW Spain). This new species, Pleurobranchaea britannicasp. nov., is also supported by several morphological synapomorphies. The British specimens constitute the first occurrence of the genus Pleurobranchaea in UK waters.

Gull-billed Tern Gelochelidon nilotica is classed as Endangered in Europe (Tucker and Heath 1994, Hagemeijer and Blair, 1997), but there have been no detailed studies of the trends in the different populations occurring in Europe and Africa. Here we study the status and trends of the species in Europe and north and north-east Africa. We estimate the total population at 10,500–12,900 breeding pairs, and recognize two biogeographical populations in this region. The western population, comprising colonies in northern Europe (Denmark, Netherlands, Germany), France, Italy, Spain, and north and north-east Africa, consists of at most 6,200 pairs, 1,800 of which are in African colonies. The eastern population, comprising colonies in the Balkan Peninsula, Greece, shores of the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, and Turkey, consists of at most 6,800 pairs. Two trends were observed: a first phase from 1900 up to the mid-1970s in which the northern European populations practically disappeared; and a second phase of stabilization, or even increase, in some of the western colonies, while the eastern population continued to decline. There is a marked concentration of the species in just a few localities in the countries of the Mediterranean basin.

On July 11, 1978, a truck with a tank loaded with liquid propylene crashed into a camping ground, Los Alfaques, on the Eastern coast of Spain, giving rise to a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion (BLEVE) with a large number of casualties. The Swedish Organizing Committee for Disaster Medicine initiated a study of the events by sending the authors to Spain to make all possible observations at the scene. We were in the camp 48 hours after the explosion. The CampThe camping ground Los Alfaques is situated about 190 kilometers south of Barcelona and 165 kilometers north of Valenica. There are hospitals of varying sizes on the route to these big cities, both of which have large hospitals equipped with burn units of high standards, Francisco Franco Hospital in Barcelona and La Fe Hospital in Valencia.

Seasonal changes in the diet of the Atlantic mackerel from the north-east Atlantic in ICES Division VIIIc during the period 1988–1999. The diet of juvenile (21–29 cm) and adult mackerel (30–45 cm) in this area in spring (the spawning season) and autumn varied in composition and size of prey. In spring, the average prey weight was 0·009 g and the number of prey was 180 individuals per stomach, with the average stomach content volume being 1·62 g (0·60% BW [body weight]), and 1·50 g (0·51% BW) when considering the empty stomachs. In autumn, the average prey weight was 0·28 g, the average number of prey per stomach was 17, and the average stomach weight that contained food was three times higher than in spring, and 2·3 times when considering the empty stomachs. In spring, the diet of the juveniles consisted of euphausiids, crustacean larvae and other zooplankton, whereas euphausiids formed 90% of the diet in the adults. In addition, during this period mackerel were cannibalistic, feeding on their own eggs. In autumn, the juveniles ate hyperiids and other, mainly gelatinous zooplankton, whereas for the adults blue whiting were clearly important, since they comprised 90% of the stomach weight.

The role of the ommastrephid squids Illex coindetii and Todaropsis eblanae (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) collected from two areas in the north-eastern Atlantic waters (north-west Spain) as hosts for larval ascaridoid nematodes was examined from November 1992 to November 1993. The morphology, morphometric growth, population dynamics and electrophoretic identification of the anisakid nematodes was described. The correspondence of Anisakis type I larvae recovered from both squid species within the sibling species Anisakis simplex B is confirmed by comparative data on morphology, morphometry, and genetic evidences. Almost all somatic structures showed progressive and continuous allometric growth corresponding with increase in worm length. Seasonal changes in parasite population levels were evident in both sampling areas.

Abstract. In this study air masses are characterized in terms of their total OH reactivity which is a robust measure of the "reactive air pollutant loading". The measurements were performed during the DOMINO campaign (Diel Oxidant Mechanisms In relation to Nitrogen Oxides) held from 21 November 2008 to 8 December 2008 at the Atmospheric Sounding Station – El Arenosillo (37.1° N–6.7° W, 40 m a.s.l.). The site was frequently impacted by marine air masses (arriving at the site from the southerly sector) and air masses from the cities of Huelva (located NW of the site), Seville and Madrid (located NNE of the site). OH reactivity values showed strong wind sector dependence. North eastern "continental" air masses were characterized by the highest OH reactivities (average: 31.4 ± 4.5 s−1; range of average diel values: 21.3–40.5 −1), followed by north western "industrial" air masses (average: 13.8 ± 4.4 s−1; range of average diel values: 7–23.4 s−1) and marine air masses (average: 6.3 ± 6.6 s−1; range of average diel values: below detection limit −21.7 s−1), respectively. The average OH reactivity for the entire campaign period was ~18 s−1 and no pronounced variation was discernible in the diel profiles with the exception of relatively high values from 09:00 to 11:00 UTC on occasions when air masses arrived from the north western and southern wind sectors. The measured OH reactivity was used to constrain both diel instantaneous ozone production potential rates and regimes. Gross ozone production rates at the site were generally limited by the availability of NOx with peak values of around 20 ppbV O3 h−1. Using the OH reactivity based approach, derived ozone production rates indicate that if NOx would no longer be the limiting factor in air masses arriving from the continental north eastern sector, peak ozone production rates could double. We suggest that the new combined approach of in-situ fast measurements of OH reactivity, nitrogen oxides and peroxy radicals for constraining instantaneous ozone production rates, could significantly improve analyses of upwind point sources and their impact on regional ozone levels.
