Based on the available archaeological material, the article covers a number of issues related to the kurgans of nomads from the middle of the 1st millennium BC within the sub-mountain zone of the Bashkir Trans-Urals, embankments of which were built using stone. The author analyses the representativeness of archaeological records, provides typological and chronological attribution of the burial complexes. Previously these materials allowed to identify the “Irendyk-Kryktyn nomadic group” which existed in the considered landscape zone. According to the author, the investigated stone kurgans are divided into two groups. The first one might be dated back to the Saka Age (VII-VI centuries BC), the second one belongs to the Savromatian-Sarmatian period (not earlier that the mid of V-IV centuries BC). Within the existing chronology there is no explanation for the time gap between those periods. Hereby, this fact may indicate the presence of two culturally unrelated nomadic groups. The analysis of the archaeological material allows us to say that the signs of the burial rite, which are typical for the monuments of the foothill strip of the Bashkir Trans-Ural (Irendyk-Kryktyn group), are widespread far beyond this landscape zone, and are common for nomads who left stone kurgans in the steppe part of the region on both sides of the Ural Ridge. Furthermore, the author draws attention to the existing statement about the process of sedentarization of nomads of this region in the middle of the 1st millennium BC. The study of the source base on this issue shows that single finds of ceramic in “settlements” of nomads are their common locations. Settlement monuments in the mountainous Urals and steppe Trans-Urals, where few fragments of Kenotkel and Gafurian tableware were found, demonstrate the lack of dwellings, tools and remnants of handicraft production. This fact testifies to the temporary or episodic nature of the appearance of small groups of population at such monuments, and is not associated with nomads. Moreover, the sedentarization of nomads in the northern marginal zone is not confirmed by either historical or ethnographic sources. The article contains materials to supplement the archaeological records for studying issues related to stone kurgans.

The agrarian question is a very urgent problem in Kazakhstan. The following paper shows the history of struggle for land in 19-20 centuries. At those times Kazakhs were nomads. Tsarism carried some reforms and made the lands in the Kazakh steppe the property of the state. In Western Kazakhstan agriculture, cattle breeding, trade developed. In the Kazakh steppe agrarian transformation started. Nomads started to build permanent dwellings. These buildings were near the Russian peasants. Construction of railways led to the fact that the Kazakhs and Russian peasants sold bread at the markets near stations. Stolypin agrarian reform accelerated the process of agrarian transformation. Eventually, Western Kazakhstan entered into Russian market.

Abstract Livestock are an important component of rural livelihoods in developing countries, but data about this source of income and wealth are difficult to collect due to the nomadic and seminomadic nature of many pastoralist populations. Most household surveys exclude those without permanent dwellings, leading to undercoverage. In this study, we explore the use of a random geographic cluster sample (RGCS) as an alternative to the household-based sample. In this design, points are randomly selected and all eligible respondents found inside circles drawn around the selected points are interviewed. This approach should eliminate undercoverage of mobile populations. We present results of an RGCS survey with a total sample size of 784 households to measure livestock ownership in the Afar region of Ethiopia in 2012. We explore the RGCS data quality relative to a recent household survey, and discuss the implementation challenges.

In the training of specialists in the art education field, it is essential to know the continuity in the evolution of national art. In Kazakh folk art, the semantic content and structuring of ornamental forms and compositions are the result of a long historical development and spiritual experience of the nomadic people. In the decorative and applied art of the people, the mental processes of society are represented. The artist-nomad is a spokesman of the Kazakh nomadic mentality, which is characterized by the originality of spiritual experience and traditions and is formed as a result of the long development of historical eras and periods under the influence of geographical, social, cultural conditions of life. In the Kazakh arts and crafts, a system of expressive means and images has been formed, which reveal the specifics of the nomadic way of life. The ornaments are a historical source that sheds the light on the peculiarities of the beliefs, the way of life of the nomads. The artistic vision of the Kazakh people is manifested both in the forms and in the decorative decoration of the dwelling household items, military equipment, jewelry. In the products of decorative and applied creativity, the artistic picture of the world of their creators is reflected ideas about heavenly bodies, natural phenomena, animal and plant life. Ornament plays a role of a kind of tool for symbolic and sign thinking. A stable system of specific signs and combinations of units is recorded in the Kazakh ornamental language. Craftsmen and contemporary artists, using the language of ornaments as an important visual communication tool, have filled their artworks with non-verbal messages and mental information.

Purpose. The article is devoted to the study of nominating the items of traditional Khakass housing in the Sayan-Altai region. We considered difficult issues of their genesis focusing on a number of poorly researched types of housings. Results. The study analyzes the use of the names of traditional Khakass dwellings that are well-known in Ethnography, including their rare dialect nominations recorded by domestic ethnographers. It is noted that some nominations studied are used to determine a house as an object of material culture, whereas other nominations demonstrate a clarifying characteristic, which ultimately determines the differences in the nominations. We considered interpretations of the names of a number of nomad dwellings, such as the name of an archaic housing of taiga Khakass “at ib”. Genesis of the dwellings names is shown in relation to log housings (tura) and frame-pillar constructions (at ib, otah / otag) of the Khakass, which represents a modern trend of studying the Khakass’ material culture. Conclusion. It is necessary to classify the names of Khakass dwellings known by describing their types. A number of issues relating to the genesis and origin of the types of dwellings studied in relation to otah / otag is still open and requires more additional data. In our opinion, the problem of the genesis of the Khakass dwelling tura, which features a log wooden construction, has been solved and shows its autochthonous character.

Abstract Census data from 8th-century Eastern Central Asian oases, combined with the measurements of the oases and data from archives discovered there, allow us to calculate estimates both of the individual oases’ populations and of their respective feeding capacities, which is to say the number of people who could be fed from the output of one hectare of agricultural land. These numbers in turn have parallels in Western Central Asia, where oasis sizes can also be calculated by examination of preserved archaeological landscapes and oasis walls. It is therefore possible to reach a rough idea of the populations dwelling in the main oases and valleys of sedentary Central Asia. As regards nomadic regions, the data are far more hypothetical, but references in certain sources to the sizes of nomad armies and rates of nomadic military levying can allow us to calculate at least the possible scales of magnitude for populations living to the north of the Tianshan.

Verbal restrictions common among the Turko-Mongol peoples of Inner Asia and Siberia are analyzed on the basis of folkloric and ethnographic sources. Their principal forms are silence, circumlocution, and whisper. The socio-cultural context of these restrictions is reconstructed. They are seen in various domains of culture, in particular relating to social norms, and are believed to refl ect fear of human life and the well-being of man and society in the communication with nature represented by deities and spirits. This is a natural reaction that has evolved under the harsh environmental and climatic conditions of Inner Asia. The sa me concerns, extending to social communication, have regulated interpersonal interactions. In a nomadic culture, verbal restrictions stem from the importance of the ritual function of language and a specifi c attitude toward spoken language, which, over the centuries, was the principal means of information storage and transfer, cognition and adaptation. This concept of speech affected the emergence of the principal behavioral stereotypes. The rigid norms of behavior account for the importance of the nonverbal context of the nomadic culture— the high informative potential of the entire space inhabited by the nomads, and the rich symbolism of their material culture, traditional outfi t, and dwelling.

Bibliography: leaves 138-149. This thesis investigates the theoretical and practical importance of nomadic ways of life for architecture. Nomadology is a construction of Deleuze and Gattari's 'counter-philosophy' challenging authenticity and propriety, in this case, in the context of architecture. It describes how nomadology may challenge static, permanent, heroically solitary ways of working and dwelling, and suggests strategies - diagramming, ephemerality, movement, and collaboration - as ways of reconciling nomadism and architecture.

This thesis in Visual Anthropology examines the Syrian Bedouins’ living space in terms of humanized space, i.e. built and functionally transformed by the persons living in it. The field research was anthropological, but used the camera as the main tool for investigation. For the first time, this research proposes a filmic investigation method for the study of the nomads’ dwellings. Through the observation and analysis of the habitation (tents and shelters) of a Bedouin family living in a camp near Palmyra (North-East Syria), it shows how the Bedouin way of life influences the structure and the functions of their living space. Ten films describing the camp and its different utilization complement the text

Sweden is experiencing a national housing shortage. The housing market has created a financial inequality between generations and as a result, homeownership has become unachievable for many. Citizens who have become tired of the situation have found their solution in the mobile dwelling. With the main motivation of freedom this thesis examines the role of the mobile dwelling and those who strive for mobile lifestyles, while discussing whether it is a viable way of living as it is constantly challenged.   The focus has been on investigating the challenges of living mobile, as the dwelling does not address the broader challenge of long-term financial security. Also, as the long-term residency is constantly challenged by its location through legislation it contributes to the already vulnerable situation.   The project concentrates on mobile living on water in the context of Stockholm, where I argue that its water as an asset has not yet been fully explored. The covered case studies have demonstrated the challenges of long-term residency for mobile dwellers have been overcome through different steps of actions, which in turn has contributed to the freedom of mobility.   This project proposes that in keeping the benefits of mobile living and re-imagining a framework, mobile residents using their own assets and know-how, can through a collective action become developers themselves. Focus is given to the achievement of long-term financial and residential security and as a result, the mobile dwelling becomes more than a temporary solution.

Over the last few years we have seen an increasingly participation of digital technologies in performing daily activities and an expandingly accessibility to information, thereby also increasing the number of possible choices. The cities, assisted by communication systems - informational and of people - are now dispersing their specialized cores, labor attraction poles , and strengthening their status as \"spaces of flow\" spaces in/of transformation and on/of displacement , enabling the production of differential urban space morphologies. The fluidity becomes synonymous with instability when the individuals, due to socioeconomic and cultural pressures, marked by movement, adapt their habits to increasingly flexible conditions on personal and professional levels, but also in their relationship with this space. New forms of urban appropriation, more individualized and ephemeralized, become typical in a society now marked by the movement and the speed in informational perception. Small itinerant social groups with common characteristics and behaviors, the so-called post-modern or global nomads, are guided primarily by professional demands of a worldwide economy, facilitated by the development of communication technologies. Revisited morphologies in the conception of city and building design, like the mobile spaces, turn possible by technological advance, but also with a sociocultural basis on these groups, creating original means of temporal apprehension and new forms of urban space appropriation that argue the limits that a highly mobilized society must overcome in order to exploit its temporal and spatial freedom. This study aims to better understand the possibilities for current urban and housing mobile types in the formation of cities\' morphologies, analyzing if there is a noteworthy increase on the temporary attribute of the object when in relation to its surroundings (urban), and a detachment between both forms of space production

Presently, 190 million people live outside of their countries of origin. Almost all have moved in search of a better life: higher wages, or an escape from war or persecution. However, a small but growing demographic is merely seizing opportunities to feed its curiosity and satisfy its sense of pursuit. London is a Mecca for such migrants that choose to fulfill career aspirations and to embark on the global adventure. These New Nomads are of both genders, young, skilled, and have an ease of mobility afforded by the virtual permanence of the Internet. They come to the city alone, leaving friends and family behind, and they often leave again in the same way. But during their stay, they build relationships, accumulate belongings, make homes. Here are some of their stories. This thesis predicts a changing of the notion of 'dwelling' in this, our market-driven, resource-limited, technology-fluent world. New efficient ways to negotiate the exchange and sharing of space and commodities are needed. The proposed Living Marketplace is designed for the passing individual with an undetermined itinerary. It is a communal hub for nomads, migrants, transients—minorities navigating amidst uncertainty and impermanence, as they each make the journey of their lives via London.

As architecture is an important outcome from culture and science in its age, the design thinking of architecture could mostly be originated from the consequences of contemporary environment and technology. Inevitably, modern architects still pursue the steps of previous generation of architects to obtain the inspiration for their designs. Modern architecture of the 20th century is influenced by industrialization, presented mechanical characteristics internally and industrial symbols externally, which becomes the principal feature and style of today’s artificial environment. Since the breakthrough of the computer technology in the 1980s, the lightening form replaced the monstrous body required by traditional mechanical, which broke the restrictions brought by the design rules established since the 1960s — “form follows function”. The contemporary industrial design works fully reflect our media culture and modern trends, in a design method that is more delicate and user-friendly. The result consequently encourages the following industrial products to be more forward-looking and creative in the originality of design concept than architectural design. This research discusses the features, the physical design concepts, and techniques of industry-product in our age: portable, decomposable and menu-selection. The exploration of contemporary industrial products and the ideology of modern architecture is the basis for the follow-up design studies. Besides, the analogy between programmable space and the “key frame” concept in computer animations is carried out to investigate the major issues of non-permanent dwelling. Furthermore, through the applications of computer-aided design software, the kinetic designs of space are generated and simulated. This study attempts to employ a non-traditional definition of a “home” as the basis for design. In digital age, due to the transformations of lifestyle and artificial environment, human beings have new interpretations for their space - the concept of non-permanent living. The objective of this investigation on nomadic and programmable space is to re-explore and re-examine the new opportunities of contemporary architecture.

Dwelling is both an activity and a location in which that activity takes place. ‘Dwelling and dwellings’ considers some of the many types of abodes in which dwelling has occurred or does so today, and reflects further on the deep significance that may be attached to dwelling. It looks at the shape and function of areas of the home and how previous dwellers of a home may affect the dwelling for future inhabitants. It also discusses the transient accommodation of nomadic peoples. It concludes that homes provide ways of connecting with one another, with our surroundings, and with the history of the place we are in.

This chapter examines the responses of three important medieval Maghribī dynasties to the dilemmas posed by nomadic populations dwelling in their midst. These dynasties include the Almoravids in al-Andalus in the twelfth century, the Almohads in the Maghrib in the thirteenth century, and the Ḥafṣids, successors to the Almohads in Ifrīqiya, during the fourteenth century. The aim is to shed light on the challenges that nomadic populations posed to political legitimacy, and to suggest, paradoxically perhaps, that the presence of unruly nomads in the medieval Islamic west, and the effort to contain them, served an important role in each dynasty's attempt to gain political legitimacy in the eyes of the Muslim community.

To compensate for the traditional lack of centralized authority in the desert, Bedouin society developed a conventionalized legal system that included an individual’s right to use private might to deter and rectify violations perpetrated against him or his clan, whether homicide, the violation of women, or many lesser offenses. In keeping with the biblical portrayal of the earliest Israelites as desert-dwelling nomads, some of the laws ascribed to them are consistent with those of the nomadic Bedouin. This chapter identifies these laws, which mainly reflect the same absence of governmental law enforcement that always obliged Middle Eastern nomads to fend for themselves. To further appreciate the similarities between Bedouin and biblical law, this chapter explores the rationale and workings of the institutions of vengeance, the protection of the weak, and the peaceful resolution of conflict.

‘Encounters’ travels to the outermost limits of Hellenistic civilization, where Graeco-Macedonian societies of the Mediterranean and western Asia interacted with sophisticated and powerful non-Greek neighbours. In the Far East, it visits the Greek city of Aï Khanoum, on the banks of the Oxus in north-east Afghanistan. To the south, it follows Eudoxus of Cyzicus on his explorative journey across the Southern Ocean, forging the first direct link between Ptolemaic Egypt and the Indian subcontinent. To the north, it visits Olbia in southern Ukraine, a Greek city under constant pressure from Scythian steppe nomads, and in the far west, it examines the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum, the dwelling of a mid-1st-century bc Roman aristocrat.

Dwelling in dispersion and far from any governmental law enforcement agencies that could provide them security, nomadic desert dwellers needed ways to protect themselves from violations such as murder, assault, insult, and theft. They achieved this security mainly by forming groups based on blood kin, or people of common descent, people whom they believed would honor claims of common loyalty and cooperation when problems with others arose. Each group they organized had a specific security function. The tribal structure of the Israelites as randomly noted in the Bible bears several similarities to that of the Bedouin. This chapter explores these similarities as well as their impact on the status and roles of the genders and on the institution of matrimony in both societies.

Covering vast geographical and cultural areas, the wingspan of Kenneth White’s poetic programme covers a cross-cultural, transdisciplinary field of study. The chapter examines White’s work, focusing on the interconnectedness and intertwining of the poetic subject with the natural world. It analyses White’s concepts of intellectual nomadism and the open world by means of tracing the main philosophical influences that inform his writing. It examines the poet’s explorations of landscape and mindscape, stemming from philosophical contemplation and spiritual realisation. The analysis attempts to follow the poet’s mapping of extensive territories of the globe in the context of the problem of proper dwelling, investigating the ways in which it mediates place in a phenomenological relationship. It explores the poetic subject’s self-identification with its surroundings, which stresses the interfolding of a mind with the natural world. Finally, the chapter also considers the syncretism of poetic forms employed by White, ranging from haiku to ‘diamond’ poems, to polyphonic itinerary poems.
