This article explores the politics of digital protest and emergent forms of sociality in the #NoDAPL (No Dakota Access Pipeline) movement using Elizabeth Povinelli’s concept of geontopower. I begin by situating the concept of geontopower in relation to a range of biopolitical, decolonial, and ecocritical theory in order to show its importance in conceptualizing the interconnectedness of decolonial and environmental interests. I use this theoretical framework to analyze several instances of what I call ‘digital decoloniality’ in the #NoDAPL movement, cases where the particular affordances of social media technologies and the efforts of Indigenous activists and non-Indigenous allies disrupted normative assumptions regarding the boundaries of the digital and ‘analog’ worlds and resisted the geontopolitical structuring of life and nonlife. I argue that the #NoDAPL hashtag works to enact the prerogatives of Western science-based environmentalism and Indigenous epistemological tenets in common, performatively generating new possibilities for conceptualizing social struggle and shared history.

This Article studies the relationship between the three main lawsuits filed by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, and the Yankton Sioux Tribe against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DaPL) and the mass protests launched from the Sacred Stone and Oceti Sakowin protest camps. The use of environmental law as the primary legal mechanism to challenge the construction of the pipeline distorted the indigenous demand for justice as U.S. federal law is incapable of seeing the full depth of the indigenous worldview supporting their challenge. Indigenous activists constantly re-centered the direct actions and protests within indigenous culture to remind non-indigenous activists and the wider media audience that the protests were an indigenous protest, rather than a purely environmental protest, a distinction that was obscured as the litigation progressed. The NoDAPL protests, the litigation to prevent the completion and later operation of the pipeline, and the social movement that the protests engendered, were an explosive expression of indigenous resistance—resistance to systems that silence and ignore indigenous voices while attempting to extract resources from their lands and communities. As a case study, the protests demonstrate how the use of litigation, while often critical to achieving the goals of political protest, distorts the expression of politics not already recognized within the legal discourse.

To explore the role of contestation in mediatization processes, this article utilizes digital and visual methods to analyze instances of Indigenous digital survivance. Focusing on recent examples at the heart of the #NoDAPL movement allows us to flesh out and argue for a decolonizing approach to the study of mediatization, which we define, following Clark (2011), as the process by which collective uses of communication media (1) extend the development of independent media industries and their circulation of narratives, (2) contribute to new forms of action and interaction in the social world, and (3) give shape to how we think of humanity and our place in the world. The article therefore concludes with suggestions regarding the further development of methodological approaches to studying processes of mediatization in relation to contestations over normative claims and pragmatic concerns regarding the role of media systems in our collective future.

This article aims to explore the connection between drones and alternative journalistic narratives for local communities. Starting from the frame of digital technologies domestication, we explore how UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) could allow mediated practices of mobilization and resistance. By adopting an exploratory approach, we considered two case studies of drone journalism related to specific community issues that share similar characteristics of social inequalities and environmental risks and analyzed the journalistic work by Digital Smoking Signal, related to the #NoDAPL protests, and the African skyCAM reconstruction of the Dandora dumpsite in Kenya. As a result, we are able to show how the appropriation and use of drones can help communities to highlight some underinvestigated social issues. The analysis underlines two different ways of using drone technology to support the local community’s narrative, based on the level of involvement of the journalists in the community cause itself.

Indigenous dispossession and environmental devastation are intertwined outcomes of settler colonialism’s cycle of violence. However, indigenous people continue to draw from cultural and spiritual teachings to resist such forms of violence, and engage in what Leanne Simpson calls “radical resurgence.” Our paper analyzes the Yakama elders’ teachings about Tma’áakni (Respect), to examine principles and forms of indigenous resistance and resurgence, demonstrated by indigenous students in support of the NoDAPL(No Dakota Access PipeLine) movement. Elders’ teachings, which are rooted in spiritual traditions held by indigenous peoples since time immemorial, are useful for understanding and articulating the importance of the contemporary indigenous student activism. We assert that indigenous people, drawing from intergenerational forms of teaching and learning, provide systemic alternatives that can simultaneously protect the sacred, and heal social and ecological devastations by reclaiming indigenous cultural teachings and traditions that resist settler colonial paradigms.

There has been a wealth of research in Latin America on the most recent global intensification of extractivism, or the capitalist exploitation of natural resources. Some of this research has examined the resistance among front-line Indigenous and rural communities, and allied environmental groups, who are challenging the development of mega-scale mining, oil, gas, monoagricultural, and related infrastructural projects. Researchers have noted many similar tactical repertoires that can take multiple forms (through direct action, media representation, and in legal, political, and educational forums) and extend across geographic scales (local, national, regional, and transnational). Communications is key to much of their work; however there has been far less research examining the communications practices in any detail. This article focuses on the communications practices in use in three Indigenous led campaigns against extractivist projects in North America, the decade-old Unist’ot’en Camp in northwestern Canada, Idle No More, and the #NoDAPL of the Standing Rock Sioux. My findings indicate that a resurgent Indigenous movement, in concert with environmental and other settler allies, has adopted an array of communications practices that combine protective action on behalf of their lands and waters with the creation of new communities in place-based assemblies and social media and digital networks.

Our hypermediated societies affect the very nature of what a social movement is. This article identifies five core nodal points of what constitutes a social movement: Program claims, Identity construction, Connections, Actions, and Resolve (PICAR). Primarily using France’s yellow vest movement case, I assess the impact of social media on these nodal points. I find that social media afford opportunities as well as present challenges for contemporary movements which taken together amounts to a newly emerging ontology. This new-new social movement ontology is characterized by processes of discontinuity (open ideological positioning, fluid collective identities, weak ties, an online repertoire of action, and relative ephemerality) co-existing with continuity (the return of a class politics of redistribution, the continued importance of collective identity, offline repertoires, and cycles of protest). This analysis demonstrates the dynamic interplay between political and mediation opportunity structures, producing new emancipatory potentials and challenging constraints.

Abstract In this work, the complex structural response of the Francis-99 turbine runner is further investigated by decomposition of the output signal from previous Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) measurements into the motion of each nodal diameter. During the structural measurements, the non-rotating runner was installed in the turbine pit, submerged in a non-flowing water, and excited with piezoelectric patches mounted on the hub. The patches were excited with phase shifted sinusoidal voltage to create overall excitation of the runner with a desired number of nodal diameters. The deflection of selected locations on the trailing edges were scanned with LDV, one point at a time, and the global movement was reconstructed by combining the data for all points. The Francis-99 runner has its blades bolted to an over-dimensioned hub and shroud, where the hub is not fully axi-symmetrical and has several hollows in it. This, together with the fact that one patch was found to be non-functional, is believed to have excited other ND patterns in addition to the one that was intentionally excited, therefore contaminating the movement of the trailing edges with movements that does not belongs to the excited ND. To mitigate this and create a better representation of the movement of the trailing edge, which is not affected by the bleed from other ND, the LDV signal for each excited frequency of a particular ND is post-processed using discreet Fourier transformation to decompose the motion of each nodal diameter in the range ND0 to ND7. This unveils the contribution of each nodal diameter within the output signal where a spike is seen for the excited ND in all measurements. Influence from other nodal diameters were found, where the failed patched is believed to cause a ND1 like movement. In addition the clustering of multiple eigenmodes with differing nodal diameters previously found in narrow frequency bands were also found as interfering contribution when exciting at the relevant frequencies.

Effects of different nutrient media, vitamins and peptone on in vitro asymbiotic seed germination of Geodorum densiflorum (Lam.) Schltr. were studied. In vitro developed rhizomes were used to determine the influence of cytokinins on growth and morphogenesis. Seed germination and survival rate of protocorms were highest in MS medium compared to other basal media. The protocorms raised through seed germination directly proliferated into rhizomes in later phase of growth and development. Nodal portions of rhizomes further exhibited growth through formation of direct and callus mediated protocorm like bodies. In general, three types of rhizome movements were noticed; viz. positively geotropic, negatively geotropic and diagravitropic movements. In the PGR free control and in the presence of NAA alone rhizomes exhibited positively geotropic movements. On the contrary, presence of cytokinin either alone or in combination with NAA exhibited diagravitropic movements. Application of TDZ completely suppressed the positively geotropic movement and enhanced the frequency of negatively geotropic movement of rhizomes followed by shoot bud formation. BAP was most effective cytokinin for large scale rhizome mediated multiplication of Geodorum densiflorum and TDZ could be effectively employed for rapid leafy shoot regeneration. Abstract This article attempts to delineate the cartography of alternative cinematic productions in the region of Kolkata, which, being a nodal juncture that shapes the cultural milieu of Bengal, offers the technological and cultural infrastructures and the scope for cinephilic engagement crucial to the production of non-mainstream cinemas. To explore the gradual development of independent and amateur films in Kolkata, this article emphasizes the cinephilic tradition of the city that not only triggered cinematic movements (such as the film society movement and the Super-8 movement) but also ushered in the institution of film festivals in the region. Despite the mutations due to technological shifts, both film societies (in altered forms) and film festivals occupy central positions in the contemporary city's cinephilic culture. This article analyses the cinephilic legacies of the film society and the Super-8 movements that have historically fostered the contemporary cinephilic ecology of Kolkata, spurring peripheral media products.

A viable pedestrian movement has always been a challenging for the urban planners and designers. The modern perception is to create a mobility towards pedestrian environment and at the same time limiting the dependency on vehicular movement. Pedestrians plays an important key role on reshaping nodes and the streets. The mental mapping of a pedestrian guides him to mobilize from one point to another and creates a pattern of an individual. When hundreds of points are created by the pedestrians a new order of network has created and different functions are intervened often to support them. These changes are responsible for the urban fabric to create a certain dimension and a vibrant network of movement. Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh is thriving on vehicular dependency movement but majority of the population are still pedestrians and depends only on public transports. Pedestrian population is dramatically increased due to constant migration of labor incentive market, better employment and fast moving lifestyle. But although the pedestrians are responsible for the vibrant environment due to their mobility pattern, a major upheaval also occur for the unplanned and haphazard street functions on nodal points to serve the pedestrians. In this paper, evaluates the causes of pedestrian movement pattern, illustrate the problems and ineffective functions that creates a node. And finally on the basis of analysis, an outcome of urban node principle has been proposed, serving more effective movements and holistic kind of functional urbanism.

Narrow QRS complex tachycardias are either atrioventricular (AV) nodal passive or AV nodal active. AV nodal passive tachycardias do not require the participation of the AV node in maintenance of the tachycardia. Examples are atrial tachycardia, atrial flutter, and atrial fibrillation. Treatment is directed at ventricular rate control with calcium channel blockers or β-blockers. AV nodal active tachycardias require active participation of the AV node in maintaining the tachycardia. Examples include AV nodal reentry tachycardia and circus movement tachycardia using an accessory pathway. Treatment with a vagal maneuver or adenosine usually terminates the tachycardia. Recognition of these tachycardias is reviewed.

Motile cilia and homologous organelles, the flagella, are an early evolutionarily invention, enabling primitive eukaryotic cells to survive and reproduce. In animals, cilia have undergone functional and structural speciation giving raise to typical motile cilia, motile nodal cilia, and sensory immotile cilia. In contrast to other cilia types, typical motile cilia are able to beat in complex, two-phase movements. Moreover, they contain many additional structures, including central apparatus, composed of two single microtubules connected by a bridge-like structure and assembling numerous complexes called projections. A growing body of evidence supports the important role of the central apparatus in the generation and regulation of the motile cilia movement. Here we review data concerning the central apparatus structure, protein composition, and the significance of its components in ciliary beating regulation.

Previous studies of the motor cortex in behaving animals were focused on the relations between the activity of single cells, usually pyramidal tract neurons, and parameters of isometric contraction (e.g., intensity of force) or parameters of movement along one axis (e.g., flexion–extension) of a single joint (e.g., elbow or wrist). However, the commonly meaningful behavioral parameter is the trajectory of the hand in extrapersonal space, which is realized by simultaneous motions about two or three joints (e.g., elbow, shoulder, wrist) and concurrent engagement of several muscles. The spatial parameters of a straight trajectory are its direction and extent. We hypothesized that a major function of the motor cortex, among other possible roles, is the specification and control of the direction of the movement trajectory in space. This reference of motor cortical function to the control of spatial aspects of the trajectory differentiated our approach from the other approaches outlined above. We investigated the directional selectivity cells in the arm area of the motor cortex by recording their activity while monkeys moved their hands in various directions in space towards visual targets. There were two salient findings of these studies. First, the intensity of the discharge of single cells varies in an orderly fashion with the direction of movement in space, so that the discharge rate is highest with movements in a preferred direction, and decreases progressively with movements made in directions more and more away from the preferred one. Thus single cells are broadly tuned around a preferred direction which differs among different cells. The second finding of our studies is a code by which this neuronal population can represent uniquely the direction of the trajectory in space. The outcome of this population code can be visualized as a vector in space that points in the direction of the movement well before the movement begins, and even in the absence of immediate movement. These results establish the motor cortex as a nodal point in the construction of motor signals controlling the direction of hand trajectory in space. Moreover, the population coding of direction may be of more general significance concerning the representation of information in neuronal ensembles and has been applied successfully to other areas of neurophysiological research.

The EGF-CFC gene cripto governs anterior–posterior (A–P) axis specification in the vertebrate embryo. Existing models suggest that Cripto facilitates binding of Nodal to an ActRII–activin-like kinase (ALK) 4 receptor complex. Cripto also has a crucial function in cellular transformation that is independent of Nodal and ALK4. However, how ALK4-independent Cripto pathways function in vivo has remained unclear. We have generated cripto mutants carrying the amino acid substitution F78A, which blocks the Nodal–ALK4–Smad2 signaling both in embryonic stem cells and cell-based assays. In criptoF78A/F78A mouse embryos, Nodal fails to expand its own expression domain and that of cripto, indicating that F78 is essential in vivo to stimulate Smad-dependent Nodal autoinduction. In sharp contrast to cripto-null mutants, criptoF78A/F78A embryos establish an A–P axis and initiate gastrulation movements. Our findings provide in vivo evidence that Cripto is required in the Nodal–Smad2 pathway to activate an autoinductive feedback loop, whereas it can promote A–P axis formation and initiate gastrulation movements independently of its stimulatory effect on the canonical Nodal–ALK4–Smad2 signaling pathway.

The concept of a good death is central to contemporary discourses on death and dying; it is also frequently used in contexts of end-of-life decision-making. We argue that in and through the medical-revivalist discourse, which challenges the idea that curative treatment is necessary beneficial and constructs death as something familiar, a good death is discursively organised around two nodal clusters: control, autonomy and dignity, and awareness and heroism. Moreover, we also argue that — within this framework of the medical-revivalist discourse — political contestation exists over the articulation of these nodal points. Especially two social movements, the right to die movement and the palliative care movement, have been at the forefront of the political struggle over the good death. In this article, we use a discourse-theoretical approach to develop an analytical model of the construction of the good death and the present-day political struggles over these constructions. This model then allows us to identify and analyse the constructions of the good death in the North Belgian newspaper coverage on three 2008 euthanasia cases. Using discourse-theoretical analysis (DTA) (Carpentier & De Cleen, 2007), our analysis shows that the articulations of the right to die variation are privileged in the newspaper coverage. There is a celebration of the extraordinariness and heroism of the dying subject who autonomously chooses on how and when to die and who preferably dies in a state of full awareness so that he can die with dignity. This privileging is often accompanied by the symbolic annihilation of many other ways of dying. Consequentially, the richness of ways of dying that characterize contemporary social realities becomes curtailed in the analysed newspaper representations.

Two Dombai earthquakes were recorded on March 26, 2013, at 23h35m with КР=11.9 and on May 28, 2013, at 00h09m with КР=11.9 (Mw GCMT=4.9 and 5.2) in the focal area of two strong (I0=IX and I0=VII at MSK 64) Chkhalta of 1963 and Teberda of 1905 earthquakes. They were accompanied by aftershock pro-cesses. The estimates of dynamic parameters of foci (for March 26, 2013, then May 28, 2013): the rupture length is L=3.4, 3.8 km, the stress drop =55, 79 Pa, the apparent stress drop=1, 3 Pa, and the average displacement along the rupture u=0.25, 0.33 m, were obtained from the spectra of S-waves at “Anapa” and “Kislovodsk” stations. Earthquakes occurred under the action of near-horizontal (PL=12°, PL=18°) com-pressive stresses directed north-northeast (AZM=21°, AZM=30°). The nodal planes of both mechanisms have a similar strike. The type of movement in both foci is a reverse fault with some strike-slip components. The stretches of nodal planes and the types of movements in the foci are in good agreement with the geodynamic setting of the axial structures of the Greater Caucasus, and also are similar to the mechanism of the destructive Chkhalta earthquake of 1963.

An automated method for determining the internal points of the coordinate grid of the blasted rock mass is described. It is based on the method of determining the nodal points of the coordinate grid of the blasted rock mass, which is based on taking into account the dependencies that connect the initial parameters of the blasting rock mass with the final location of the fixed points of the blasted rock mass. The determining factors are the specific height and width of the collapse, the coefficient of loosening of the rocks. The method of analysis of experimental and industrial mass explosions in quarries, methods of analytical geometry, matrix theory and linear algebra are used. For the first time in mining, an analytical method has been developed for determining the internal points of the coordinate grid of an exploded block. It includes the established functions of the movement of nodal points, components of the vectors of movement of nodal and internal points of the coordinate grid. The established dependencies allow one to determine the displacements of any point inside the coordinate grid of the blasted block from the initial coordinates of the nodal and internal points.

We address with fluid-dynamical simulations using direct numerical techniques three important and fundamental questions with respect to fluid flow within the mouse node and left–right development. First, we consider the differences between what is experimentally observed when assessing cilium-induced fluid flow in the mouse node in vitro and what is to be expected in vivo . The distinction is that in vivo , the leftward fluid flow across the mouse node takes place within a closed system and is consequently confined, while this is no longer the case on removing the covering membrane and immersing the embryo in a fluid-filled volume to perform in vitro experiments. Although there is a central leftward flow in both instances, we elucidate some important distinctions about the closed in vivo situation. Second, we model the movement of the newly discovered nodal vesicular parcels (NVPs) across the node and demonstrate that the flow should indeed cause them to accumulate on the left side of the node, as required for symmetry breaking. Third, we discuss the rupture of NVPs. Based on the biophysical properties of these vesicles, we argue that the morphogens they contain are likely not delivered to the surrounding cells by their mechanical rupture either by the cilia or the flow, and rupture must instead be induced by an as yet undiscovered biochemical mechanism.

During planning the movement of an android robot arm in an organized space, there is a need in reducing calculation time of the trajectory in the space of generalized coordinates. The indicated time significantly depends on calculation time the vector of increments of the generalized coordinates at each step of calculations in the synthesis of movements along the velocity vector. In this paper, geometric studies were carried out based on the visualization of patterns of changes in the average displacement of the nodal points of the hand mechanism of an android robot while implementing instantaneous states. On the basis of the geometric analysis of the indicated displacements, a method is proposed which makes it possible to reduce the time of iterative search for the increment vector of generalized coordinates. Also images are shown of multiple positions of arm mechanism links on the frontal and horizontal projections when implementing instantaneous states. This images allows to make a graphic interpretation of manipulator mechanism maneuverability at each point of the configuration space. Hypersurfaces in four-dimensional space are used to establish the analytical dependencies reflecting the relationship of the average displacement of manipulator mechanism nodal points and the generalized coordinates that defining the positions of the manipulator configurations. For this purpose, the equations of interpolating polynomials located in three mutually perpendicular planes are used. Based on these three interpolating polynomials, a third-order hypersurface equation is obtained, which reflects the interrelation of geometric and kinematic parameters. The article also presents the results of virtual modeling of android robot hand mechanism movement, taking into account the position of the restricted area in the AutoCAD system. The results of calculations using the obtained analytical dependencies showed a reduction in the calculation time of test tasks. The conducted studies can be used in the development of intelligent motion control systems for autonomously functioning android robots in an organized environment without the participation of a human operator.

Research has been conducted on determining the type of fault in Lombok earthquake on July 1 to December 31 2018 using the focal mechanism method. The focal mechanism is a method of reviewing fault parameters that include strike, dip and rake based on the initial movement direction of P wave recorded by the station, which then projected into a focal ball. There are 246 stations are used in several countries. There were 139 earthquakes with M?4.0 on July 1 to December 31 2018, at coordinates 7.0? S-9.0? S and 115.5? E-117.5? E. The result of fault field parameters is at nodal 1 strike=52?-149?, dip=6?-75?, rake=39?-143? and at nodal 2, strike=233?-313?, dip=18?-84?, rake=58?-119?, then projected into focus ball. Based on these results shows that earthquakes occur as a result of thrust fault movement.

To reduce inertia of moving links into resultant force and moment vectors and to represent center of mass as node in finite element models are widely-used in mechanical calculations of linkage mechanisms. Considering distributed inertia of motion makes possible to create more precise finite element models in spatial linkage structures. By algebraically summing all the distributed inertial loads acting in both directions, perpendicular and along the axis of a constant cross section link, we can show that their intensity varies linearly along the length of link. Using this approach together with Chasles theorem for a point of free rigid body in projections onto the moving axes in the finite element method for rectilinear homogeneous rod, we reach to a more precise finite element model considering analytically distributed inertia of motion. Besides, we obtained subvectors in matrix relation which binds the generalized reaction forces acting at the contact points of the rod element with nodal generalized elastic movements. These subvectors includes the weight and inertia of a distributed spatial movement of link.

Prior to gastrulation the mouse embryo exists as a symmetrical cylinder consisting of three tissue layers. Positioning of the future anterior–posterior axis of the embryo occurs through coordinated cell movements that rotate a pre–existing proximal–distal (P–D) axis. Overt axis formation becomes evident when a discrete population of proximal epiblast cells become induced to form mesoderm, initiating primitive streak formation and marking the posterior side of the embryo. Over the next 12–24 h the primitive streak gradually elongates along the posterior side of the epiblast to reach the distal tip. The most anterior streak cells comprise the ‘organizer’ region and include the precursors of the so–called ‘axial mesendoderm’, namely the anterior definitive endoderm and prechordal plate mesoderm, as well as those cells that give rise to the morphologically patent node. Signalling pathways controlled by the transforming growth factor–β ligand nodal are involved in orchestrating the process of axis formation. Embryos lacking nodal activity arrest development before gastrulation, reflecting an essential role for nodal in establishing P–D polarity by generating and maintaining the molecular pattern within the epiblast, extraembryonic ectoderm and the visceral endoderm. Using a genetic strategy to manipulate temporal and spatial domains of nodal expression reveals that the nodal pathway is also instrumental in controlling both the morphogenetic movements required for orientation of the final axis and for specification of the axial mesendoderm progenitors.

The determining factor in the accelerated pace of informatization is the increase in the speed and reliability of data transmission networks. In this regard, new and existing standards are developed and modernized. A lot of organizations are constantly working on the development and implementation of new generation communication networks. This article provides an overview of available software solutions that allow us to investigate and evaluate the behavior of data networks. In particular, tools suitable for mobile communication systems were determined, having sufficient built-in functionality and allowing us to add our own implementations. NS3 has been chosen as a suitable network simulator. Apart from the review, a solution for this tool was developed. It allows estimating the reliability of data transmission from the start movement of a network node at all times during its removal from a base station.

Background and aims. The purpose of the study is to evaluate through a FEM (Finite Element Method) the effects of the rotation movement upon a complex structure (enamel– pulp -alveolar bone, PDL), for external load. Method. The progressive action of a fixed orthodontic device on three teeth: first molar, first and second premolar is modeled and simulated with the components placed on the buccal and palatal surfaces of the tooth. For the reproduction of a situation similar to the real one, the loading of the model was performed through a nodal force applied at a height of the crown, of various amplitudes, F = 1 N; 2, 3 and 4 N. The values of stress are: maximum stress of the whole structure and the shearing effect for the pulp. Results. The characteristics of the material are Young’s E modulus and Poisson’s ratio of the components of the modeled structure. The most stressed elements of the structure are the pulp and the ligament, revealed by von Mises stress. The elements of the structure are mainly stressed in fiber compression in the direction of the moment’s action given by the orthodontic forces and in fiber stretching in the opposite direction. Out of the orthodontic movements: translation, tipping, intrusion-extrusion , rotation is the most dangerous. Conclusions. The accumulated stress effect in the pulp becomes dangerous. The orthodontic movements given by dental force values higher than 1.5-2N are to be avoided.

Background/Aims: Nodal cilia that rotate in the ventral node play an important role in establishing left-right asymmetry during embryogenesis; however, inv mutant cilia present abnormal movement and induce laterality defects. The mechanism of their motility, which is regulated by dynein activation and microtubule arrangement, has not been fully understood. This study analyzed the dynein-triggered ciliary motion in the abnormal ultrastructure of the inv mutant, aiming to quantitatively evaluate the influence of microtubule mislocalization on the movement of the cilium. Methods: We established a realistic 3-D model of an inv mutant cilium with an ultrastructure based on tomographic datasets generated by ultra-high voltage electron microscopy. The time-variant activation of the axonemal dynein force was simulated by pairs of point loads and embedded at dynein-mounted positions between adjacent microtubule doublets in this mathematical model. Utilizing the finite element method and deformable grid, the motility of the mutant cilium that is induced by various dynein activation hypotheses was investigated and compared to experimental observation. Results: The results indicate that for the inv mutant, simulations of the ciliary movement with the engagement of dyneins based on the distance-controlled pattern in the partially activation scenario are broadly consistent with the observation; the shortening of the microtubules induces smaller movement amplitudes, while the angles of the mislocalized microtubules affect the pattern of the ciliary movement, and during the ciliary movement, the microtubules swing and twist in the mutant ciliary body. Conclusion: More generally, this study implies that dynein engagement is sensitive to subtle geometric changes in the axoneme, and thus, this geometry greatly influences the integrity of a well-formed ciliary rotation.

The article looks at Ikhwanweb, the English website of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood (MB), from its early days and through the years before the 25th January revolution. The archive is used as a theoretical concept to capture both the symbolic and material struggles that the MB faced while trying to articulate its political vision. As a nodal point where power and knowledge intersect, the concept of the archive was first theorized by Foucault and Derrida. Ikhwanweb is examined as a digital archive, a site for both knowledge and memory production. The first section deals with the main analytical concept; the second tells the troubled history of the material infrastructure required to run the website. Then two main threads are identified and examined. The need to distantiate the organization from political violence and that of reaching out ‘the West’ shaped the content of Ikhwanweb. The website also allowed the group to interact directly with policy-making circles and research institutions. Can this be said to be part of that process Bayat calls post-Islamism? The concluding section reflects on this question and suggests a more ambivalent picture.

A method for calculating the rods on elastic foundation under the inertial load action when it moves at a variable speed is proposed. Test problems about a force or load movement with variable speeds along a hinged beam and about the movement with a high-speed railway car deceleration along a track section modeled by a hinged supported beam of great length on an elastic foundation are considered. The selection of the elastic foundation material of the rail track determines the dynamics of the high-speed railway car in different modes of its movement. To construct the methodology, the previously proposed by the author of the article solutions are used: a step-by-step procedure for solving the problems of unsteady dynamics of structures and the method of “nodal accelerations” to take into account the action on structures of a moving inertial load.

The article presents the results of the development of a robotic complex for providing additive technologies based on a spatial manipulator. The quality of volumetric printing is ensured by the continuous movement of the working body - the extruder along a trajectory specified in the space of generalized coordinates or in Cartesian space. A method is proposed for forming program trajectories of the manipulator's working body by specifying a set of nodal points, the movement between which is carried out along rectilinear trajectories. To do this, the inverse kinematics problem of position is solved at each moment of time. The developed algorithm, implemented in the Matlab environment, made it possible to determine the values of generalized coordinates, velocities, accelerations and forces during the movement of links corresponding to the configurations of the spatial manipulator at specified points of the trajectory.

Genetic and embryological experiments have demonstrated an essential role for the visceral endoderm in the formation of the forebrain; however, the precise molecular and cellular mechanisms of this requirement are poorly understood. We have performed lineage tracing in combination with molecular marker studies to follow morphogenetic movements and cell fates before and during gastrulation in embryos mutant for the homeobox gene Otx2. Our results show, first, that Otx2 is not required for proliferation of the visceral endoderm, but is essential for anteriorly directed morphogenetic movement. Second, molecules that are normally expressed in the anterior visceral endoderm, such as Lefty1 and Mdkk1, are not expressed in Otx2 mutants. These secreted proteins have been reported to antagonise, respectively, the activities of Nodal and Wnt signals, which have a role in regulating primitive streak formation. The visceral endoderm defects of the Otx2 mutants are associated with abnormal expression of primitive streak markers in the epiblast, suggesting that anterior epiblast cells acquire primitive streak characteristics. Taken together, our data support a model whereby Otx2 functions in the anterior visceral endoderm to influence the ability of the adjacent epiblast cells to differentiate into anterior neurectoderm, indirectly, by preventing them from coming under the influence of posterior signals that regulate primitive streak formation.
