Texto completo da fonteIncludes bibliographical references (leaves 37-40).
The purpose of this study is to determine what type of preventative maintenance for a concrete parking structure will produce the maximum economic benefit. Existing models for concrete deterioration are analyzed for their accuracy in predicting the service lives of concrete structures and a model appropriate for concrete parking structures is selected. The selected model is modified to account for the unique microclimate that is created within a parking structure and used to create deterioration curves that quantify the fraction of a structure deteriorated at a given time. Several preventative maintenance programs that summarize current practice in the repair of concrete parking structures are created. The programs are analyzed using the selected concrete deterioration model and the method of preventative maintenance that maximizes the net present worth of a concrete parking structure is identified.

Wang, Lei. "Printed Circuit Board Design for Frequency Disturbance Recorder". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30917.
Texto completo da fonteThe FDR (Frequency Disturbance Recorder) is a data acquisition device for the power system. The device is portable and can be used with any residential wall outlet for frequency data collection. Furthermore, the FDR transmits calculated frequency data to the web for access by authorized users via Ethernet connection. As a result, Virginia Tech implemented Frequency Monitoring Network (FNET) with these FDR devices. FNET is a collection of identical FDRs placed in different measurement sites to allow for data integration and comparison. Frequency is an important factor for power system control and stabilization. With funding and support provided by ABB, TVA and NSF the FDRs are placed strategically all over the United States for frequency analysis, power system protection and monitoring.
The purpose of this study is to refine the current FDR hardware design and establish a new design that will physically fit all the components on one Printed Circuit Board (PCB). At the same time, the software that is to be implemented on the new board is to be kept similar if not the same as that of the current design. The current FDR uses the Axiom CME555 development board and it is interfaced to the external devices through its communication ports. Even through the CME555 board is able to meet the demands of the basic FDR operations, there are still several problems associated with this design. This paper will address some of those hardware problems, as well as propose a new board design that is specifically aimed for operations of FDR.

This thesis presents the design, development and initial implementation of a new commuter dashboard tool entitled AccessMyCommute for use by all MIT employees. This is the first in a series of new commuter benefit incentives that MIT will introduce during the 2015-2017 academic years to its employees in order to reduce parking demand and to increase campus sustainability. Previous research has suggested that both financial and non-monetary incentives can be effective at encouraging behavior change, and AccessMyCommute leverages that knowledge with the introduction of a number of non-monetary incentives including: real-time trip planning, carpool facilitation, and a leaderboard to exert social influence. The tool also provides a platform for introducing a variety of forms of financial incentives. Quality control and usability studies preceded implementation. Introduction of AccessMyCommute to the MIT community is documented, and a design for the first set of financial incentives is presented. The first set of financial incentives was conducted through the use of Point Programs in AccessMyCommute and all users were awarded points for their commutes based on levels of sustainability. Those points could then be redeemed for prizes including a small set-value or entries into lottery raffles for larger prizes. Initial results from the introduction of AccessMyCommute as well as the first point program suggest that in the absence of other incentives, particularly any disincentive to driving, commuters are unlikely to alter their mode. Point programs are effective as an incentive for commuters to log on to AccessMyCommute, but the number of employees participating is small and future work should aim to increase the number of participants. Finally, participation in the initial point program confirmed previous research that suggests that individuals exhibit riskseeking behavior in the face of uncertain gains. This information should be leveraged in future work with AccessMyCommute, particularly in conjunction with additional new commuter benefits and incentives to be offered by MIT in the next academic year.

For a long time, finding a parking lot always been a challenging task. After finding a parking lot, it still needs some pause steps to deal with parking fees, finding the parking space and other action to complete parking. There are some parking problems troubling drivers. There are many parking service apps on the market in response to these problems, but most of the apps are invented on a certain feature. It seems that no App can completely improve the process problems and inconveniences. In order to be able to design a parking service that can completely solve the problem and inconvenience, and is generally accepted, this study first investigates the potential problems of the existing parking service, and investigates the satisfaction of the parking lot users to the parking service through the questionnaire. And then improved parking service design by integrating questionnaires and representative parking services in the market. At last, using questionnaires to scale satisfaction and system usability of new parking service design. The results of the scale showed that users were generally satisfied with the new parking service designed in this study. The average SUS score of new parking service was 71.2, and the grade was C, indicating that the new design generally improved the original troubles and met the expectations of users.

This study focuses on the product design of an electronic parking brake (EPB) system. A complete product design procedure from market survey, quality function development (QFD) method, mechanical design, control design, system integration, and system test is provided. Market survey includes commercial products review and patent analyses. The EPB patent population increases year by year after 1996. In addition, there are many brands of commercial vehicles, such as Jaguar, Audi, Renault, BMW, and Volkswagen, installing the system as an essential requirement. As a result, the EPB system is expected to be bright in the vehicle industrial. However, there are many disadvantages needed to be improved, such as complexity, noise, high cost, and low efficiency. After the introduction and survey of EPB, design specifications of the system can be identified. The QFD method is used for the product development. QFD is used to transform the customers’ requirements to the measurable engineering requirements, compare the available products, and determine the design target. Then, three mechanism concepts are created and evaluated. The best one, including a operator, a reducer, a self-locker, a manual releaser, and a balancer, is selected to be embodied. FEA is used to help select materials and ensure the enough strength after the CAD model is developed Finally, PC-based method is used to integrate the mechanism and electronics. The LabVIEW program controls the EPB in the virtual environment with considerations of various driving conditions. In addition, the sensor switch signals are fed back to PC to ensure the parking success. Then, testing instrumentation is built to verify the pulling force and practicability. Furthermore, the relation between the input motor torque and the output brake force is found for the application to other vehicles. Finally, the system specifications are compared with the QFD targets to be the criterion for future designs.

This paper proposed the trajectory algorithm with the minimum turning radius for the automatic parking system. The automatic parking system makes parking more convenient. The automatic parking system is an extension of parking assist system. Parking assist system mainly uses image processing or infrared and ultrasonic sensor to sense obstacles and parking assist system needs a much more parking space. In order to fill up this gap, the study attempts to improve part of trajectory algorithm by combining the minimum turning radius in order to substantially reduce the parking space into 1.43 times the length of the automobile.

The techniques of image processing, fuzzy logic control, or path planning in automatic parking system need more complexity computation and fast real time response. Normally, using the hardware to implement the automatic parking system have higher performance than using software. In this work, we propose an automatic parking system to improve the parking computation time and implement this system into FPGA for a car-like vehicle. The detection of parking space unit, control unit and decision of vehicle position unit are implemented into a single FPGA device to reduce parking computation time. Experiment results show that the proposed car-like vehicle can reduce parking space and reduce the parking computation time.

It has been long recognized that magnificent demand for transportation in cities makes traffic and environmental problems. One of the problems is the parking issue. Because of the uncertainty of vacant parking spots, drivers cruise for parking spots on street, which does not only frustrate the drivers but also worsen the traffic and air quality. For the urban freight transportation, many vehicles load and unload cargos just in front of the shops, even illegally double parking on the busy lanes. This might fasten the delivery service, but is not acceptable and allowable by law. Therefore, this research develops a parking reservation system that considers the uncertain availability of parking spots, and the uncertain demand for parking. As a result, the proposed reservation system decreases the searching time for parking spots, while increasing the income for the parking facility operators, and thereby improves urban traffic and air quality. In practice, there is not yet a parking reservation system. Besides, the actual parking behaviors are influenced by complex factors. Hence we use simulation technique as our major research method. In the research, we develop two simulation-based parking reservation systems, which are first come-first serve (FCFS) reservation system and, DISTINCT reservation system. We simulate different conditions and calculate the performance measurements, namely the number of completed cars, the searching time savings, the number of rejected freight vehicles, the total income for the parking facility operators (including the parking fee and the reservation fee). Based on the simulation results of 20 replications and compared to the scenario without the reservation system, the FCFS reservation system reduces searching time by 85% on average ( by 94% in the best case and by 81.52% in the worst case). In terms of the total revenue, there is an increase of 30.37% on average, (44.92% the maximum and 12.34% the minimum). Between FCFS and DISTINCT, FCFS serves more reservations than DISTINCT does, because there is a restriction on number of reservation in DISTINCT. In more crowded parking environment, the situation is more obvious. Therefore using FCFS reservation system can not only reduce more searching time, but also increase more total revenue.

Recently, Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction have received much attention. A variety of executed construction projects aim at energy saving. In these projects, most energy is consumed for lighting which needs to be mainly improved. For instance, the lights in the parking lot are always turned on whether or not someone is there. Hence, it leads to energy wastage. This paper aims to design an embed-ded control module embedding Octopus X module. The designed control module can automatically control the lights and guide people to their parking space by following the light-path so that manpower and en-ergy consumption can be reduced. The designed module sends control signals through Zigbee network, hence the de-ployment cost can be reduced.

Recently, the progress of wireless communication technology has brought the rapid popularity of smart phones. Therefore, diverse smart phone-based applications (App) have been developed. To provide drivers the useful traffic and parking information, this thesis designs and develops a system to reserve parking spaces. The proposed system consists of three subsystems: a cellular phone-based reservation subsystem, a parking ticket recognition subsystem, and a parking management subsystem. The proposed system not only provides drivers the available parking lots in the vicinity, but also supports the reservation of parking spaces. All the functions of the proposed system are validated via experimental tests, and the results show that the proposed system can work correctly. Overall, the proposed system achieves the concept of online to offline (O2O). It can provide the real-time and convenient information about parking spaces and save the time cost of drivers for searching the available parking lots.

In recent years, with the rapid changes in science and technology, economic development in various countries has also depended on the use of energy and technology. Under the dual parallel of science and technology and economy, environmental pollution has become an issue that needs urgent attention. On the other hand, Taiwan’s economy has grown. Driven by the increase in the number of small cars held each year, and the signs of migration from rural areas to urban areas, the density of urban population has risen rapidly. The traditional process of searching for parking spaces is inefficient, and the repeated search caused by delayed information has caused serious air pollution. Based on these two factors, the establishment of a comprehensive parking lot search system is an important issue. We hope to reduce the time and cost of repetitive search. Therefore, this study provides a choice of parking lots optimized for users with multiple destinations, taking into account the time window of the charging period, with the minimum total distance as the goal. Combine the governments open and real-time data, and use the gene algorithm to perform cloud computing to find an optimal parking lot for destinations.

Great medical technology achievements were made in the last century, hence seniors have reached to 11% of total population in Taiwan, nearly 14% as “aging society”defined by World Health Organization, WHO. In aging, with multiple physiological degeneration, seniors become reluctant or fear to go out, affects their social activities directly. By literature review and observation, designer can hardly find recreations suitable for seniors. TV programs and sleep fill up their daily life. Physical degeneration and diseases interfere with mental status, and lacking of physical exercise makes aging even faster. Designer found this issue urgent to be addressed, hence ambitious to design games especially for the seniors. Analysis indicates games bring energy to seniors and slow down aging process, brain-storming game helps to blood circulation, prevent from Alzheimer''s and memory loss. In Taiwan, the games sold to the seniors are most derived from children’s, not suitable for the seniors of strong self-esteem. To facilitate the design of seniors’ board game, the designer volunteered in nursing home, to observe and chat with seniors to understand better their requirement and preference. Thorough explore to the seniors’growth backgrounds, political and economic changes, life style and culture difference was done to establish the base, then introduce new elements to their experience. According to vision principle and social workers’ comments, 5 sets of games are designed with large scale, vivid colors and easy carry out, namely “Old Street Millionaire”, “Smart-Quick drawer”, “Domino”, “Fast Chief”, “Number Winner”. Each board games was test-run in nursing house with social workers and caregivers and their recommendations to the designs well received. In this thesis, we develop a guiding system for parking lot based on image processing and database. In traditional parking lot, drivers know the count of the empty parking spaces, but have no idea where the available parking space is. Consequently, we hope to get vehicle’s position in image processing way, further provide guiding information to drivers then guide vehicles to their chosen parking space. The main functions of the system are multiple-object tracking and guidance. In the tracking work, we predict the object’s position by image’s continuity, detect the occurrence of bump condition as well as develop wide area monitoring with the aid of multiple-camera cooperation mechanism. In guiding work, we are able to obtain the guide direction by searching guiding data in database according to vehicle’s position, moving direction and destination.

This thesis presents the design and implementation of the intelligent automatic parking controller and accomplishes it in a smart car. This car possesses the function to accept the command from the personal digital assistant (PDA), and estimates the environment by integration of infrared and ultrasonic sensors. All calculation and control rules are achieved by field programmable gate array (FPGA). This controller can not only achieve PDA’s commands, but also decide the space of garages and park well. On the unable parking condition, the controller will transmit the warning signal to PDA. In the thesis, we first describe the system architecture that includes the FPGA unit, the PDA unit, the wireless unit, the infrared sensors and the ultrasonic sensors. Secondly, we present control rules of parallel parking, garage parking and self parking. The very high hardware description language (VHDL) is used to design the circuits of the controller. Finally, it is perceived that our intelligent autonomous parking controller is feasible from the computer simulations and the practical experiments.

Today, with the maturity of the Internet of Things technology, the information generated by parking activities in several counties and cities of Taiwan has become an important resource for traffic management systems.Currently, the wisdom of off-road parking lots in Taiwan, such as license plate recognition, RFID reading, parking space detection, parking space guidance, parking fund management and connection in series of payment of flow of gold, have reached their expiration and have been replaced gradually The parking administration staff invested in the project; however, road parking in Taiwan is still in the manual billing stage. Today, when the Internet of Things technology is maturing, the intelligent technology of related applications in off-street parking lots should also be applied to the on-street parking bill. In this way, when the management of the street parking bill is smart, it can improve the parking charges on the street, the administration efficiency, also solve the shortage of current labor in Taiwan. In this study, an integrated automatic parking billing system is completed with a photo surveillance lens combined with image motion detection combined with license plate image recognition. The recommendation for the parking space is to use the instant vacancy data to integrate the owner's parking space to the parking destination radius, to help him find the parking space that meets the owner's time and location, and to actively allocate parking space informations. Besides, the system will not provide a paper of parking ticket after the system opens automatically, so the system will provide a multiple payment mechanism for the owner can pay through different forms such as electronic payment, mobile payment, automatic deduction , payment through the supermarkets etc., after leaving the parking space.

Rapid development of the economy and population explosion result in traffic congestion. The air quality is worse than before, which is caused by the emission from the majority of vehicles stopping on the road inevitably. Thus, in order to solve environmental pollution and reduce the cost that people made on the road, such as money and time, the Intelligent Transport System was proposed. The Intelligent Transport System contains nine subsystems, and Intelligent Traffic is a part of it. Intelligent Traffic is composed of data collection system, transmission system and path algorithm. However, if people could get information about destination in advance, they could avoid drive toward congested road. Therefore, this paper chooses Intelligent Parking Lot as the goal of the Intelligent traffic. Intelligent Traffic which providing a important decision reference to decide path for people, is a part of Intelligent Transport System. But there are no system to fully manage informations about parking lots in Taiwan. Besides, the equipments of parking lot cost too much, and the characteristics of parking place sensor are mostly fixed-based, in other words, poor portability. In trend of the era of information explosion, because there are no contaction among parking lot, cloud server and business district, leading to informations are not immediately, and parking cost opaque. Based on above description, this paper proposed three designing characteristics about the parking lot: 1. Design cloud server to manage the parking lot and the business district and that provides people reserve parking place, inquire about information, and discount parking cost. 2. The parking equipment, with higher portability, results in quickly installation and dismount, and higher beneficial usage of land. 3. System calculate optimal path to help people avoid drive toward congested road, based on Taichung Dynamic Road Open Data.

Control strategy design of autonomous parallel parking using a self-organizing fuzzy controller (SOFC) is proposed in this paper. Ultrasonic radars are used to establish the parking space relative to the vehicle. Trajectory planning can be applied to obtain the reference trajectory and steering angle. The reference steering angle is used for feed-forward compensation. Trajectory estimation is used to obtain the lateral position error and orientation error with respect to the reference trajectory. These two errors are inputs to the SOFC and the control output is the steering angle correction. Preliminary simulation and experimental results show that the proposed SOFC with feed-forward compensation can achieve better trajectory following and reduce the length requirement of parking space.

Nowadays in Taiwan there are lots of job opportunity focus on big city, therefore the architectural type is going to high or even super high buildings to solve the rising residential demand. In the meanwhile, it’s inevitable trendy of planning and design the basement to parking lot to solve the parking issue of high or even high buildings. The parking lot is a confined space, if the emission from vehicle can’t be exhausted efficiently, the air quality in parking lot will be bad. Currently in Taiwan, the regulations and researches for air quality in parking lot in high or super high buildings are still lacking. This study case is chosen from a new building in Taichung city to research parking lot ventilation by FDS which can simulate the emission of CO, CO2 and temperature from vehicle to estimate the air quality pattern in underground parking lot. Therefore it could understand which kind of ventilation design in underground parking lot is related to emission concentration from vehicle. According to different ventilation design pattern, air flow, emission concentration and temperature, this study simulate the situation of the maximum vehicle engine on at same time in the underground parking lot by FDS to approach the authenticity. Meanwhile it can also review the regulations for underground parking lot is suitable. In the simulation result of different ventilation design, the best way to control emission concentration and emission temperature is mechanical air intake plus mechanical exhaust. The second way to control it is natural air inlet plus mechanical exhaust without split-type air, but this way will cause the whole flow field split in half; the emission concentration and temperature in exhaust is extremely high. If it is natural air plus mechanical exhaust with split-type air, the emission concentration and temperature will spread to whole underground parking lot and the environment is worsen. At last the worst environment is without any ventilation design in underground parking lot. In the future according to the back-parking habit to design the ventilation of underground parking lot in high or super high buildings, it should design Induced Flow Jet Fan above each parking space to increase the air flow of emission. Nowadays the parking lot ventilation equipment is always launch on by time meter, so there is not any ventilation system on during the time meter which is off. The suggestion of this study is to set up air quality monitoring system which is 24 hours automatically start to achieve good air quality in underground parking lot.
