This book explores a novel interpretation of Nietzsche’s philosophy as phenomenological. It unpacks Nietzsche's phenomenological method, a 'wild phenomenology', to elucidate his understanding of the human being as an intentional embodied consciousness, as a being-in-the-world and as a being-with-others. Establishing this phenomenological conception of the human prepares the ground to revisit the Nietzschean notions of free spirit and the Overhuman and how they express the ethical and cultural-political flourishing Nietzsche envisions for human beings.

Nietzsche and Architecture explores Nietzsche’s relationship to the architects, buildings, and modern architectural movements he went on to inspire, and situates his philosophy more appropriately and comprehensively within the field of architectural studies, architectural history, and theory. Divided into two parts, the book first examines Nietzsche’s philosophy of architecture, exploring his notions of rhythm, ornament, style, and power. It then goes on to examine Nietzsche’s ambiguous architectural legacy, scrutinising iconic architects, thinkers, designs, and cultural movements to ascertain their relationship with Nietzschean ideas, from the crystal architecture of Bruno Taut and Peter Behrens, to the ‘new styles’ of the Bauhaus and Le Corbusier, Louis H. Sullivan’s desire for the heights, and the cultural propaganda of ‘Nazi architecture’. Clearly explaining the subtleties and complexities of Nietzsche’s architectural thought, Nietzsche and Architecture provides an accessible insight into Nietzsche’s philosophy and its significance to the development of modern architecture in the 19th and early 20th centuries, shedding vital light on the continued relevance of Nietzsche to architecture today.

Readers of Giorgio Agamben would agree that the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) is not one of his primary interlocutors. As such, Agamben’s engagement with Nietzsche is different from the French reception of Nietzsche’s philosophy in Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Georges Bataille, as well as in his contemporary Italian colleague Roberto Esposito, for whom Nietzsche’s philosophy is a key point of reference in their thinking of politics beyond sovereignty. Agamben’s stance towards the thought of Nietzsche may seem ambiguous to some readers, in particular with regard to his shifting position on Nietzsche’s much-debated vision of the eternal recurrence of the same.

This chapter sets out to establish that Nietzsche’s other commitments do not preclude his having been an expressivist. This needs to be done because commentators often attribute to Nietzsche sceptical views about the very existence or possibility of agency—views which, if he held them and they were true, would undercut any substantive approach to the philosophy of agency (empiricism just as much as expressivism). The chapter considers a variety of these sceptical views and argues that Nietzsche held none of them; it then addresses some preliminary evidence for the conclusion that he was not just not a sceptic about agency, but that he may in fact have been an expressivist. The remainder of the book is devoted to testing this hypothesis in the context of Nietzsche’s conceptions of freedom, autonomy, morality, and the self.
