Cultural values can be found through cultural traditions or oral literature that exist in society. One of the oral literatures is Nias folklore. Nias folklore has a main purpose and function in the social life of the community. The purpose of this study is to analyze the richness of the cultural values of the Nias tribe contained in 14 Nias folk tales. The method used is descriptive qualitative method with stages of data reduction, presenting data, and compiling research conclusions. The data obtained from the research stages were validated by triangulation. Based on the research method, it has been found that the cultural values contained in folklore are the value of the belief system, social system, knowledge system, language and communication symbol system, art, and the value of living equipment and technology systems. Based on the results of this study, the researcher suggests that every cultural wealth can be explored through various forms of oral literature. Because, every oral literature can be used as a source of value education, social institutions can even be used as local and national cultural wealth.

Abstract: Transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding is a joining process in which a liquid-forming interlayer is placed between the substrates to be joined. At the bonding temperature, the interlayer initially liquates. Subsequently, interdiffusion between the liquid interlayer and the adjacent substrates results in a change in the overall composition of the joint, such that isothermal resolidification of the joint takes place. Standard models of the TLP process assume the sequential occurrence of discrete dissolution, isothermal solidification, and homogenization processes. This study uses edge-on transmission electron microscopy investigations to challenge the general applicability of such standard models to the TLP bonding of a variety of systems involving the B2 type intermetallic compound NiAl as a substrate material. This article considers the formation of boride phases apparently at the bonding temperature in NiAl/Ni-Si-B/Ni bonds. The precipitation of repeating sequences of phases in NiAl/Cu/Ni joints and the reliquation of the NiTi substrate in NiAl/Cu/NiTi bonds after the completion of isothermal solidification are examined.

Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to investigate how free surfaces, as well as supporting substrates, affect phase separation in a NiAg alloy. Bulk samples, droplets, and droplets deposited on a graphene substrate were investigated at temperatures that spanned regions of interest in the bulk NiAg phase diagram, i.e., miscible and immiscible liquid, liquid-crystal, and crystal-crystal regions. Using MD simulations to cool down a bulk sample from 3000 K to 800 K, it was found that phase separation below 2400 K takes place in agreement with the phase diagram. When free surface effects were introduced, phase separation was accompanied by a core-shell transformation: spherical droplets created from the bulk samples became core-shell nanoparticles with a shell made mostly of Ag atoms and a core made of Ni atoms. When such droplets were deposited on a graphene substrate, the phase separation was accompanied by Ni layering at the graphene interface and Ag at the vacuum interface. Thus, it should be possible to create NiAg core-shell and layer-like nanostructures by quenching liquid NiAg samples on tailored substrates. Furthermore, interesting bimetallic nanoparticle morphologies might be tuned via control of the surface and interface energies and chemical instabilities of the system.

The oxidation in air of NiAl(110) was investigated in the temperature range from 870 °C–1200 °C by in situ x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Oxidation at 870 °C and 1 bar oxygen leads to the formation of an epitaxial layer of γ-alumina showing an R30° orientation relationship with respect to the underlying substrate. At oxidation temperatures between 950 °C and 1025 °C, we observed a coexistence of epitaxial γ- and polycrystalline δ-Al2O3. The α-Al2O3 starts to form at 1025 °C and the complete transformation of metastable phases to the stable α-alumina phase takes place at 1100 °C. The fcc-hcp martensitic-like transformation of the initial γ-Al2O3 to epitaxial α-Al2O3 was observed. X-ray diffraction and cross-section transmission electron microscopy proved the existence of a continuous epitaxial α-Al2O3 layer between the substrate and the polycrystalline oxide scale, having a thickness of about 150 nm. The relative orientation relationship between the epitaxial alumina and the underlying substrate was found to be NiAl(110) || α-Al2O3 (0001) and [110] NiAl || [1120].

In the early 20thcentury, homosexual acts were illegal in Sweden. During this time, “homosexuality” did not exist as a concept. Instead, the Swedish law referred to homosexual acts as “unnatural fornication”. In 1907 a man named Nils Santesson was arrested and sentenced for committing unnatural fornication with another man. The case was brought to the attention of the press, which for the first time began to use the term “homosexual” in headings and articles.    The purpose of this study has been to analyse how homosexuality was considered and defined in Sweden during the early 20thcentury, by studying the reporting of Nils Santesson’s court case and his self-image. The analysis is based on the categories: crime, illness and morality, and to achieve the purpose of the study, a qualitative text analysis has been implemented as a method. Also, the study was based on the theory of a masculinity hierarchy that subordinated homosexuals, and one version of queer theory.   The result shows that homosexuality was considered as an act rather than an integral part of someone’s character or identity. The society regarded homosexuality as obnoxious, indecent and unnatural, which was a direct consequence of the Swedish criminal law 18 § 10. Homosexuals were portrayed as sickening from three aspects: as a morbidly deviant phenomenon from heterosexuality, as contribution to mental illness and as carriers of sexually transmitted diseases. Morally, homosexuals were considered sexually licentious and constantly in search of seduction. Heterosexuality was upheld as a dominant system which placed homosexual men in a masculine subordination as homosexuality was regarded as a criminal act, immoral and were associated with disease.

Iodide in excess exerts the Wolff-Chaikoff effect. It is described that some minerals can regulate the expression of proteins. This study aimed to investigate if the iodide could modify the expression of NIS mRNA, in short periods of time. Rats and cells, divided in time-groups of 30 min up to 24h, were used in studies of expression, poly-A tale length and polysomal profile of NIS mRNA. Both in vivo and in vitro studies showed that the iodide treatment promoted a reduction in the expression and the poly-A length of NIS mRNA, in all time-groups, and decreased its recruitment to the polysomes. It is possible that the reduction of NIS mRNA poly-A tale length has increased the instability/degradation of this transcript, and impaired the translation efficiency of it. Concluding: a) the iodine exerts a post-transcriptional regulation of NIS mRNA expression, being essencial in the processes that guide the Wollf-Chaikoff effect; b) the oligoelements have an extremely important role in the expression regulation of proteins related to their transport.

Abstract Negative indefinites (NIs) in languages such as Dutch and German may give rise to so-called split-scope readings. Sentences like German Du musst keine Krawatte anziehen (‘you must wear no tie’) have a reading where the modal takes scope in between the negation and the indefinite. That suggests that NIs are not negative quantifiers (NQs) in a straightforward sense, as appeared from the discussion thus far. This chapter argues that West Germanic NIs are not NQs in the Montegovian sense, but complex syntactic structures that spell out a negation and an indefinite as a single word. Split-scope effects result from application of the Copy Theory of Movement; the chapter further argues that, in split-scope constructions, after QR, the negation is interpreted in a higher copy and the indefinite in a lower copy of the NI.

The Nebraska Innovation Studio (NIS) is a university-based makerspace built on a membership model open to the faculty staff and students from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL) and community members at large. The space is located in the newly developed Innovation Campus that sits between the two established university campuses of UNL. Consisting of 17,000 ft2 (1580 m2), the space is large and modern with idea strips consisting of TV monitors, peg boards, and white boards running throughout much of the space. NIS has received a number of donations to enable the purchasing of equipment including laser cutters, 3D printers, a long arm quilter, as well as a number of work tables and computers. Overall, the space is very welcoming to new members, with few rules and policies to distract from the making experience. Learning communities are formed through the hard work of NIS staff, which keep track of individual members' projects and interests and work to ensure they connect with like-minded makers in the space. NIS has impacted the community by opening a shared university space, with the community focused on innovation and entrepreneurship. This chapter explores the Nebraska Innovation Studio.

Abstract Most lethal violence now occurs outside of war zones. In Latin America, countries like Brazil, Mexico, El Salvador, and Colombia have often had yearly homicide rates far exceeding those in Afghanistan or Syria. The use of military force or militarized police has become widespread in such contexts, although they do not meet the international humanitarian law (IHL) thresholds for non-international armed conflict (NIAC) and formally fall under a law enforcement paradigm, where international human rights law (IHRL) applies in full. Through a case of study of Mexico’s ‘war on organized crime’, Pablo Kalmanovitz and Miriam Bradley show how the qualification of a situation of organized violence as NIAC or as below the NIAC threshold has major implications for how individualization processes operate. Starting from an IHRL baseline, processes of collectivization are identified and analysed in reverse analogy with processes of individualization in armed conflicts. The authors find that, while collectivization takes place in contexts of organized criminal violence, there is no international legal framework to underpin it, and consequently not the same level of protection as there is in war. Their analysis sheds light on the structure of processes of individualization in contexts of armed conflict, as it shows how much of the individualization process in armed conflicts is not a move towards peacetime regulation of violence under IHRL.

This chapter begins with Nils Gilman's seminal essay “The Twin Insurgency,” stating that gangs aim to carve out de facto zones of autonomy for themselves by crippling the state's ability to constrain their freedom of economic action. It talks about gangsters in Latin America that took advantage of the vulnerability of the states they operated in to such a degree that they frequently became shadow powers. It also details how gangs terrorized their host societies, using corruption, extortion, and bullets as their weapons of choice. The chapter cites the statistics that emphasized that the most violent cities in the world were in Latin America, clarifying that the statistics were a result of the impunity enjoyed by the region's criminal organizations, primarily those with ties to the illicit drug trade. It discusses how drug gangs often served as the de facto administrator of social services in slums, where the state failed to provide much of anything.

Following Mabel Moraña’s (2012) approaches to the affective turn, which takes up what was proposed by Spinoza and Foucault, this work traces the bodies of girls as literary characters in works written by women writers from Caldas, based on their violence, fears and deficiencies. The chapter presents some theoretical references on the affective turn in contemporary literary theory, traces the background on the affects in girls that appear in novels and stories in Colombia, with an emphasis on the Great Caldas, and finally contrasts the treatment of the body of girls in works published by women writers from Caldas with almost a century of difference: the stories of Chila Molina-Salazar The Little Sisters of the Poor (1923), Mother’s Love (1923) and If I Were the Breeze (1923), and the novel by Natalia Mejía-Echeverry 11 bombs before the ashes (2017). The analysis identifies from a gender perspective the socioaffective contexts that serve as cultural references to unveil aspects related to the sentimental education of girls in this Colombian region.

Abstract When Germany Conquered Poland in September 1939, the consensus of prominent Americans was that the event should not alter U.S. neutrality. Liberals and conservatives alike preached this position. Liberals worried the war would divert attention and money from domestic problems; conservatives feared the repetition of higher taxes and government expansion of the Great War. Pacifists advocating mediation made strange bedfellows with the America First Committee, arguing that there was no danger of invasion if Germany won in Europe. Behind this public ratio-nale was a fundamental pride, a right of America to avoid entanglement in another “Old World war.” The attitude vexed the European ecumenical leaders. Visser ‘t Hooft wrote to Cavert, “[T]here is very great disappointment among all those who are working in international movements” because “America is giving so little response to the demands for help.” World Council headquarters in Geneva, like the city itself, became the hub of a maze of wartime dealings. Diplomats, resistance movement agents, influential refugees, and church leaders from many nations congregated at the office, so information about Europe at war was available there as nowhere else. The World Council staff had a German, Hans Schonfeld, and a Swede, Nils Ehrenstrom, whose contacts in the German diplomatic corps supplied news from the German-occupied countries and inside the reich itself.

Abstract The influence of the particle velocity on the formation intermetallic of coatings is discussed. The primary phases of detonation sprayed NiAl coatings are NiAl and Ni3Al, and also a solid solution of Ni in NiAl. The lamellar and homogeneous distribution of Al may be due to the oxidation of the powder particles during their flight in the pulsating high temperature, high velocity jet of the gas detonation process. During heating and melting of the powder particles, an aluminum oxide film is formed. This film takes part in the coating formation and affects the Al distribution. Another important observation is the presence of NiAl and Ni3Al phases in the coating structure. The transition zone between the coating and substrate has a thickness of 10-15 µm. The character of the distribution curves of Al and Ni confirms the lamellar distribution of NiAl and Ni3Al phases in the coating.

After attending a National Insulation Association (NIA) presentation on Insulation, The Forgotten Technology at ASME’s 2007 Citrus Engineering Conference, a major citrus processing facility in central Florida decided to examine the condition of their insulation systems and determine the potential energy savings that could be achieved by replacing or repairing their existing insulation. Facility management had previously examined abbreviated energy assessments for above and below ambient systems but had not commissioned an extensive below ambient assessment. Due to the age, complexity, and recent weather history of the facility (i.e. hurricanes), management wanted to examine the condition of the thermal insulation systems and any effect its condition may have on the refrigerant piping and overall system operating costs. The assessment process was more complex than originally anticipated and yielded a wealth of meaningful information. The facility covers about 50 acres and consists of a variety of production, warehousing, and shipping/receiving facilities. It is estimated that the facility processes roughly one billion pounds of oranges and grapefruits each year into juice and juice products. Refrigeration for the site is provided by a large and complex ammonia refrigeration system. A total of eight “engine rooms” house electric driven compressors and associated vessels and equipment. Installed capacity is roughly 3,000 tons of refrigeration with an estimated energy cost on the order of $2 million per year. The ammonia refrigerant is distributed throughout the site via a complex and interconnected refrigerant piping system. The total refrigerant charge in the system is roughly 300,000 lbs of ammonia. Since 1980, the Agency is responsible by law for the safe management of all radioactive waste produced in Belgium, including decommissioning wastes. By the law of 11 January 1991 and the implementing Royal Decree of 16/10/1991, ONDRAF/NIRAS has been entrusted with a mission concerning the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. This mission involves the collection and assessment of data concerning decommissioning forecasts for nuclear facilities, the approval of facilities’ decommissioning programmes, the establishment — in consultation with operators — of financing conditions for decommissioning, as well as the implementation of these programmes on request by the operator, or in the case of its failure to do so. This is the case for the company Best Medical Belgium SA located at Fleurus (MDS Nordion SA, till April 2011), which produced radioisotopes for medical applications and went bankrupt in 2012. These installations have been entrusted to ONDRAF/NIRAS. A plan of action was developed for taking-over the operations in the framework of remediation and decommissioning. Steps have been taken to integrate his new role as a nuclear operator. The installations of Best Medical Belgium SA are now referred to as the “O/N - Site Fleurus.” Nuclear facility operators, or any person requesting to operate a nuclear facility, are obliged to provide ONDRAF/NIRAS, under their responsibility and in due time, with all the necessary information concerning these facilities’ decommissioning forecasts, the nature, quantities and dates of transfer of the resulting waste, and the financing conditions for these facilities’ decommissioning. In order to make the necessary funds available for decommissioning a nuclear facility when it will be shut down, operators are obliged to establish provisions during the facility’s active life. These provisions are calculated in such a way that the total amount established at the time of the final shutdown covers all costs resulting from the facility’s final phase, namely the preparation of decommissioning, decontamination, more or less long-term maintenance, dismantling, treatment, conditioning and disposal of waste produced during this phase. In order to face to multiple and repeated evaluation processes, the Agency, already in the early 90’s, started with the implementation of its own integrated data processing system, recording the physical and radiological inventories of nuclear facilities, and allowing the evaluation of the quantities of decommissioning materials and wastes as well as of the decommissioning costs of these facilities. The cost evaluations cover all decommissioning activities from final shutdown of the facility until final release from nuclear control, as well as conventional demolition and site restoration if required. Beside the information related to the inventories, the database involves so called auxiliary tables integrating unit prices of the various decontamination and dismantling techniques, unit rates for radioactive waste processing, interim storage and final disposal.

Decommissioning of nuclear facilities is a complex process involving operations such as detailed surveys, decontamination and dismantling of equipment’s, demolition of buildings and management of resulting waste and nuclear materials if any. This process takes place in a well-developed legal framework and is controlled and followed-up by stakeholders like the Safety Authority, the Radwaste management Agency and the Safeguards Organism. In the framework of its nuclear waste and decommissioning program and more specifically the decommissioning of the BR3 reactor, SCK•CEN has developed different software tools to secure the waste and material traceability, to support the sound management of the decommissioning project and to facilitate the control and the follow-up by the stakeholders. In the case of Belgium, it concerns the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control, the National Agency for radioactive waste management and fissile material and EURATOM and IAEA. In 2005, BELGONUCLEAIRE decided to shutdown her Dessel MOX fuel fabrication plant and the production stopped in 2006. According to the final decommissioning plan (“PDF”) approved by NIRAS, the decommissioning works should start in 2008 at the earliest. In 2006, the management of BELGONUCLEAIRE identified the need for an integrated database and decided to entrust SCK•CEN with its development, because SCK•CEN relies on previous experience in comparable applications namely already approved by authorities such as NIRAS, FANC and EURATOM. The main objectives of this integrated software tool are: • simplified and updated safeguards • waste & material traceability • computerized documentation • support to project management • periodic & final reporting to waste and safety authorities. The software called DASAO (Database for Safeguards, Waste and Decommissioning) was successfully commissioned in 2008 and extensively used from 2009 to the satisfaction of BELGONUCLEAIRE and the stakeholders. SCK•CEN is now implementing a simplified release of the software for the management of the decommissioning of the THETIS reactor. Its decommissioning will start in March 2013 and will be completed by the end of 2014.

Microtechnology-based Energy and Chemical Systems (MECS) offer opportunities for portable power generation, distributed heat pumps, hydrogen separation for automotive fuel cells, on-site waste remediation and point-of-use chemical synthesis. In order to realize many of these applications, it is recognized that new techniques must be developed for producing microchannels within refractory materials. Material requirements include high-temperature resistance, chemical inertness and low-cost microfabrication. Advances in multilayer ceramics have allowed the microlamination of microreactor structures from ceramic tape. The tapes are formed in the green state and subsequently bonded through a sintering process. Problems include sagging, porosity, and volumetric shrinkage which can lead to dimensional instability. Intermetallics are another class of refractory materials which may hold some promise for high-temperature microchannel development. In this paper, several proposed methods of forming microchannel arrays in aluminide intermetallics are evaluated. These methods have the advantage of eliminating volumetric shrinkage due to binder removal. Results show that some NiAl systems may be suitable for microchannel designs. Issues to be addressed include cost, volumetric shrinkage due to phase changes or other creep-related phenomena incurred during phase changes.

The correlation between the creep deformation parameters and creep life has been investigated for Gr.91 by analyzing creep strain data at 450 to 725 °C, 40 to 450 MPa and tr = 11.4 to 68,755 h in the NIMS Creep Data Sheet. The creep life tr is correlated with the time to minimum creep rate tm as t r = 3.7 t m . Taking the stress dependence of tm / tr into account, the creep life could be predicted more reliably. The minimum creep rate ε̇min depends on both the tm and the strain to minimum creep rate εm as ε . min = 0.54 ε m / t m . The εm is evaluated to be 0.02 to 0.03 at high stresses at each temperature but it decreases with decreasing stress at temperatures above 550 °C, suggesting that the creep deformation in the transient region becomes more inhomogeneous with decreasing stress probably due to localized creep deformation within 1 μm in the vicinity of prior austenite grain boundaries. The downward deviation takes place in the the tr versus ε̇min curves (Monkman-Grant plot). At the same ε̇min, both the εm and tm change upon the condition of tm ∝ εm as can be seen from the above equation. The decrease in εm with decreasing stress, corresponding to decreasing ε̇min, causes a decrease in tm, indicating the downward deviation of the tr versus ε̇min curves.

For the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) Demonstration Power Plant (DPP) several neutron flux measurements are made, both within the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) and outside the RPV. The measurements within the RPV are performed by the Core Structures Instrumentation (CSI) system. While those outside the RPV are performed by the Nuclear Instrumentation System (NIS). The PBMR has a long annular core with a relative low power density, requiring flux monitoring over the full 11 M of the active core region. The core structures instrumentation measures the neutron flux in the graphite reflector. Two measurement techniques are used; Fission Chamber based channels with high sensitivity for initial fuel load and low power testing and SPND channels for measurements at full and near full power operation. The CSI flux monitoring supports data acquisition for design Verification and Validation (V&V), and the data will also be used for the characterization of the NIS for normal reactor start-ups and low power operation. The CSI flux measurement channels are only required for the first few years of operation; the sensors are not replaceable. The Nuclear Instrumentation System is an ex core system that includes the Post Event Instrumentation. Due to the long length of the PBMR core, the flux is measured at several axial positions. This is a fission chamber based system; full advantage is taken of all the operating modes for fission chambers (pulse counting, mean square voltage (MSV), and linear current). The CSI flux monitoring channels have many technical and integration challenges. The environment where the sensors and their associated signal cables are required to operate is extremely harsh; temperature and radiation levels are very high. The selection and protection of the fission chambers warranted special attention. The selection criteria for sensors and cables takes cognizance of the fact that the assemblies are built in during the assembly of the reactor internal structures, and that they are not replaceable. This paper describes the challenges in the development of the monitoring systems for the measurement of neutron flux both within the RPV and the ex core region. The selection of detector configuration and the associated signal processing will be discussed. The use of only analogue signal processing techniques will also be elaborated on.

Abstract Accurate prediction of the fatigue strength of steels is vital, due to the extremely high cost (and time) of fatigue testing and the often fatal consequences of fatigue failures. The work presented in this paper is an extension of the previous paper submitted to OMAE 2019. The main objective of this manuscript is to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict fatigue strength, based on composition and process parameters, using the fatigue dataset for carbon and low alloy steel available from the National Institute of Material Science (NIMS) database, MatNavi. A deep learning framework Keras is used to build a Neural Network (NN), which is trained and tested on the data set obtained from MatNavi. The fatigue strength values estimated using NN are compared to the values predicted by the gradient boosting algorithm, which was the most accurate model in the OMAE 2019 paper. The comparison is done using metrics such as root mean square error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Coefficient of Determination (R2) and Explained Variance Score (EVS). Thereafter, the trained NN model is used to make predictions of fatigue strength for the simulated data (1 million samples) of input parameters, which is then used to generate conditional probability tables for the Bayesian Network (BN). The main advantage of using BN over previously used machine learning algorithms is that BN can be used to make both forward and backward propagation during the Bayesian inference. A case study illustrating the applicability of the proposed approach is also presented. Furthermore, a dashboard is developed using PowerBI, which can be used by practicing engineers to estimate fatigue strength based on composition and process parameters.

Resumo:
Background. Brush encroachment constitutes a serious problem in both Texas and Israel. We addressed the issue of efficacy of livestock herbivory - in the form of goat browsing - to change the ecological balance to the detriment of the shrub vegetation. Shrub consumption by goats is kept low by plant chemical defenses such as tannins and terpenes. Scientists at TAES and ARO have developed an innovative, cost-effective methodology using fecal Near Infrared Spectrometry to elucidate the dietary percentage of targeted, browse species (terpene-richredberry and blueberry juniper in the US, and tannin-rich Pistacialentiscus in Israel) for a large number of animals. The original research objectives of this project were: 1. to clarify the relative preference of goat breeds and the individual variation of goats within breeds, when consuming targeted brush species; 2. to assess the heritability of browse intake and validate the concept of breeding goat lines that exhibit high preference for chemically defended brush, using juniper as a model; 3. to clarify the relative contributions of genetics and learning on the preference for target species; 4. to identify mechanisms that are associated with greater intake of brush from the two target species; 5. to establish when the target species are the most vulnerable to grazing. (Issue no.5 was addressed only partly.) Major conclusions, solutions, achievements: Both the Israel and US scientists put significant efforts into improving and validating the technique of Fecal NIRS for predicting the botanical composition of goat diets. Israeli scientists validated the use of observational data for calibrating fecal NIRS, while US scientists established that calibrations could be used across animals differing in breed and age but that caution should be used in making comparisons between different sexes. These findings are important because the ability to select goat breeds or individuals within a breed for maximal efficiency of brush control is dependent upon accurate measurement of the botanical composition of the diet. In Israel it was found that Damascus goats consume diets more than twice richer in P. lentiscus than Mamber or Boer goats. In the US no differences were found between Angora and Boer cross goats but significant differences were found between individuals within breeds in juniper dietary percentage. In both countries, intervention strategies were found that further increased the consumption of the chemically defended plant. In Israel feeding polyethylene glycol (PEG, MW 4,000) that forms high-affinity complexes with tannins increased P. lentiscus dietary percentage an average of 7 percentage units. In the US feeding a protein supplement, which enhances rates of P450-catalyzed oxidations and therefore the rate of oxidation of monoterpenes, increased juniper consumption 5 percentage units. However, the effects of these interventions were not as large as breed or individual animal effects. Also, in a wide array of competitive tannin-binding assays in Israel with trypsin, salivary proteins did not bind more tannic acid or quebracho tannin than non-specific bovine serum albumin, parotid saliva did not bind more tannins than mixed saliva, no response of tannin-binding was found to levels of dietary tannins, and the breed effect was of minor importance, if any. These fundings strongly suggest that salivary proteins are not the first line of defense from tannin astringency in goats. In the US relatively low values for heritability and repeatability for juniper consumption were found (13% and 30%, respectively), possibly resulting from sampling error or non-genetic transfer of foraging behavior, i.e., social learning. Both alternatives seem to be true as significant variation between sequential observations were noted on the same animal and cross fostering studies conducted in Israel demonstrated that kids raised by Mamber goats showed lower propensity to consume P. lentiscus than counterparts raised by Damascus goats.
