In Spring of 2013, a group of students from the University of Michigan participated in the restaging of The Well of Horniness at the Graduate Center of the City of New York. Remounting the production in NYC some 30 years after its first production answered questions regarding the longevity of the play, but more importantly, generated a whole new set of questions.

ABSTRACT This essay sheds additional light on the biographies and fates of Ayn Rand’s closest relatives in the Soviet Union and abroad after young Alissa Rosenbaum left the “country of workers and peasants” in 1926 for the pursuit of a new life in the United States. Previously unknown facets of her relatives’ lives were intertwined with the complex and often tragic historical events of the first half of the twentieth century. Among these relatives are victims of the German blockade of Leningrad, a music teacher, a European bacteriologist, a doctor who was twice a refugee, and a Soviet Medical Service Corps officer.

Resumo:

The literatures that have emerged from post-war Turkish migration to Europe have become a topic of discussion since the 1980s. However, studies comparing the emergence of these literatures in different European contexts are rare. This article compares Sweden and West Germany, two contexts where migration from Turkey has a similar history, but where the resulting literatures differ massively due to different political and literary conditions. Multicultural, and in particular multilingual, public policies in Sweden have facilitated the emergence of a Kurdish diaspora literature; this then became a major impetus for the emergence of a Kurdish literature in Turkey when it was finally possible to write and publish in Kurdish there in the 1990s. The emergence of the New Left in West Germany, reflected in a re-awakened workers’ literature and new left-wing publishing houses in the German literary field, has provided publishing opportunities for Turkish migrant writers influenced by a socialist internationalist tradition in the 1970s. These works laid the foundation for a literary tradition that has since come to be regarded as having changed the understanding of what it means to be German.

Resumo:

Anomalous systemic arterial supply to the basal segments of the left lower lobe without coexisting pulmonary artery connection is a rare anomaly. Most feel treatment is necessary; however, the ideal strategy is unclear. Treatments described include embolization, pulmonary resection, or anastomosis to the native pulmonary artery. We recently encountered an infant with this anomaly and present a literature review summarizing all recent reports. Additionally, we describe a novel surgical technique to create a tension-free anastomosis utilizing segmental aortic translocation that we employed in our patient due to a large distance between the anomalous vessel and native left pulmonary artery.

Abstract The literary description of the movement, “New Methods of Midwifery,” during the 1950s is not only a historical record of the innovation of delivery techniques, but also a demonstration of the realization of bio-governance at the grassroots level, and of the reformation of traditional gender concepts. These works directly criticized outdated delivery methods and the traditional concept of life that traditional midwives observed and also documented the development of bio-politics in New China. The writers portrayed a series of images of traditional midwives and socialist midwives which left a traceable legacy of visions of Chinese professional women. This article aims to investigate the images of this special professional group and their cultural significance to the reformation of Chinese fertility culture, daily life and the development of bio-politics during the 1950s.

Resumo:

Abstract This essay introduces the German term “Druckerzeugnisse” to portray pamphlets as formats that are particularly useful for expressing political protest and demands due to their interwovenness into political action. By analyzing “Druckerzeugnisse” of central groups of the German New Left during the “long sixties” this essay follows two objectives. 1. It argues that “Druckerzeugnisse” allow for factoring in political contention into intellectual historical research in a manner that remains close to the intentions of activists. 2. In doing so, “Druckerzeugnisse” are useful sources for new impulses in the intellectual history of the New Left due to their capacity to determine conflicting changes in the self-perception of political subjects. Based on the selection of “Druckerzeugnisse” this essay argues that the intellectual history of the New Left is marked by deep conflicts that eventually resulted in a Post-New Left.

Abstract OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: We report the third case of an aneurysm of the lateral sacral artery (AnLSA). In all cases, because of an incorrect preoperative diagnosis, the surgeons were confronted with severe and unexpected hemorrhaging, and surgery was aborted without effective treatment. Our purpose is to present the preoperative features of AnLSA and its treatment modalities. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old man had a medical history of renal transplantation on his left external iliac artery. He complained of acute lumbar pain associated with cauda equina syndrome, which resolved within a few hours. At that time, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed an intracanal hematoma extending from S1 to T12. Six weeks later, a second MRI scan demonstrated an oval-shaped intracanal mass behind the vertebral body of S1 with intense gadolinium enhancement. INTERVENTION: An anterior epidural mass was found. An incision into this mass resulted in significant arterial hemorrhaging. Transparietal embolization with a cotton compress and closure of the aneurysm wall were performed. The postoperative clinical status was stable, and a delayed angiographic study suggested a diagnosis of aneurysm of the right LSA, a branch of the internal iliac artery. Its pathophysiology was explained by the development of a high-flow transpelvic shunt from the right iliac artery territory to the left, to maintain the renal graft blood flow that had initially been reduced by stenosis of the left common iliac artery. Six weeks later, a new MRI scan demonstrated that the AnLSA had increased in size. The lesion was then excluded endovascularly by injection of glue. CONCLUSION: A medical history of renal transplantation with MRI scans showing an anterior epidural mass behind S1 or a spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma are features that must evoke a diagnosis of AnLSA. Treatment is mandatory and is best achieved by embolization. Surgery based on angiographic findings is indicated if the lesion is responsible for a compressive hematoma.

Background: Angiocentric glioma (AG) is a rare, benign, and slow-growing tumor. First described in 2005, it is now gaining attention with respect to the possibility of being diagnosed. Even with no statistical differences between sex, it has been reported both in children and the elderly. A total of 120 cases have been described in the literature. The aim of this study is to provide new data for a new statistical assessment of the prevalence and incidence of AG in populations. Case report: An 8-year-old male patient with no history of epilepsy and no need for antiepileptic therapy underwent surgery for a left-parietal brain lesion, revealed through MRI. Imaging was acquired after his first absence episode. The lesion was completely resected. Histological findings indicated angiocentric glioma. No signs of recurrency after two years of follow-up. Conclusion: AG is usually an epilepsy-related low-grade glioma. Few cases exhibit disease progression and exitus. Surgical management should aim for a gross total resection to avoid recurrence and persisting epilepsy. Surgery represents the gold standard in diagnosis and treatment and must be performed as soon as possible in consideration of its healing properties and its useful diagnosis.

Doppler tissue imaging is a group of regimes based on the Doppler effect and the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the global and segmental myocardial function. Doppler tissue imaging enables to evaluate quantitatively the functional state of not only the left, but also the right ventricle. The using of Doppler tissue imaging is informative for assessing the global and regional function of the left heart ventricle. The Doppler tissue imaging made it possible to assess the systolic and diastolic function of the various segments of the left and right ventricles. The review presents the information about the principles and possibilities of Doppler tissue imaging, the new technology of ultrasound heart examination in assessment of myocardial function. The review also covers the history of myocardial Doppler tissue imaging. The main attention is focused on the characterization of Doppler myocardial tissue imaging regimes.

Ovarian vein thrombosis (OVT) was first described in 1956 and is well known for its association with gynecological malignancy, pregnancy, postpartum, pelvic diseases, surgeries, and other thrombophilic etiologies. Most commonly OVT presents on the right ovarian vein. We report a rare case of a 47-year-old Caucasian female G7P7 with no significant past medical history who presented to the emergency room for acute nonspecific back pain and left lower quadrant pain of 1 day. Imaging with a computed tomography with contrast demonstrated a new left OVT. After a thorough literature review, this is presumed to be the third reported case of idiopathic left OVT.

Abstract BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Cavernous malformations (CMs) arising intrinsically to the cisternal segment of the trochlear nerve are extremely rare. This case of a trochlear nerve cavernous angioma is the third to be reported in the neurosurgical literature and the first to be resected by a middle fossa approach. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The authors present a case of a 31-year-old woman with progressive left-sided headache and left hemisensory symptoms, whose magnetic resonance imaging showed a solid enhancing tumor in the left ambient cistern at the level of the midbrain-pontine junction causing significant brainstem compression. Intraoperatively, a left trochlear nerve cavernous angioma circumferentially enveloping the nerve was visualized. The angioma was microsurgically resected by a middle fossa approach under frameless stereotactic guidance. Gross total resection of the intrinsic trochlear nerve lesion was achieved, although the trochlear nerve could not be preserved intact. CONCLUSION: CMs should be considered in a possible differential diagnosis of cisternal trochlear nerve tumors. Surgical resection remains the standard of care, and is indicated for relief of compressive symptoms and prevention of future bleeds. Postoperative diplopia often persists; however, resolution of diplopia reported in the literature can be attributed to either regeneration after direct surgical repair of the sacrificed nerve or a spontaneous adaptation over time.

In this study, a new inverse analysis framework for estimation of myocardium constitutive parameters is established. In this framework, by using cardiac magnetic resonance image of realistic human left ventricular, a more realistic, finite element analysis model for analyzing the deformation of left ventricle during diastole is introduced. The anisotropic nonlinear Holzapfel-Ogden constitutive model is used to describe the material behavior of myocardium. Estimating the parameters as for the inverse problem of left ventricle deformation, a novel hybrid simplex and particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to estimate the parameters of myocardium’s constitutive model. Numerical examples presents that finite element analysis results and the estimated parameters are in good agreement with the experimental data reported in literature, comparing with current optimization algorithm, the presented hybrid optimal algorithm can estimate the constitutive parameters more efficient. The efficiency and validity of the proposed parameter estimation framework is demonstrated.

Abstract OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE A unique case of delayed ischemic deficit after resection of a large intracranial dermoid is presented. CLINICAL PRESENTATION A 23-year-old woman, 36 hours after the uneventful gross total resection of a large intracranial dermoid cyst, slowly developed a progressive mixed aphasia and right hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography revealed small infarcts of the left putamen and temporal-occipital junction and a vasospastic tapering of the left M1 segment. INTERVENTION Angiography confirmed severe vasospastic tapering of the left M1 and M2 segments. Endovascular treatment successfully restored flow in the left superior division. However, the initial attempt at low-pressure dilation of the inferior division led to vessel rupture. Seven months after reoperation for emergent trapping of the M1 segment, the patient made an excellent recovery, with only mild right-hand incoordination. CONCLUSION Ruptured dermoid cysts are a risk for early and delayed cerebral ischemia, and endovascular treatment of dermoid-encased vessels may carry a higher risk for rupture.

More than a decade after the proposal to “broaden our conceptual understanding” to incorporate cultural practices and transnational approaches to interpretations of the New Left, Mexican historians continue to stake out diverging positions with respect to what constitutes a New Left framework. By comparison to Southern Cone scholarship, a palpable disconnect has existed within Mexican literature between those focusing on a narrower interpretation of political history and those focusing on a more expansive one. This article reviews the literature on New Left scholarship in comparative perspective and proposes several interpretations for why Southern Cone research has achieved more integration of cultural and political history than Mexican scholarship has. The article concludes with a discussion of recent research that points in the direction of a potential convergence both within Mexican historiography and between Mexican and Southern Cone historians investigating the Long 1960s.

We propose a new distance measure for the space of all trapezoidal fuzzy numbers using centroid point and left/right spread of trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Moreover, the metric properties of suggested distance measure are investigated. Indeed, we show that for two arbitrary trapezoidal fuzzy numbers if the distance between centroid points and also the distance between left spreads and right spreads go to zero, then two given fuzzy numbers are equal. Consequently, we complete discussion about the relation between fuzzy number and its centroid which is the firstly discussed by Hadi-Vencheh and Allame (2010). To the best of our knowledge, this is first time in the literature that such metric is applied by centroid point.

Immediately, by dint of reference to an early journal article written by Roger Harrocks, the editorial 'voice' of the introduction is concisous of this critical genealogy. The journal AND university based cultural/literature studies journal produced in the early 1980s, and as both a university professor and a cultural activist, Harrocks is one commentator who continues to be particulary alive to the coexistence of a politics of culture and political economy.

Populism has become the subject of a large and growing literature but little is written about non-Western movements, and feminist scholars have yet to grapple with its gender dynamics, including its appeal to many women voters, and its gendered social consequences. In this research note, I briefly survey the literature and show how right-wing populist nationalism – a reaction to the ills of neoliberal capitalist globalization – is also found in Islamist movements. I call for an inclusive, progressive agenda that can appeal to and mobilize those who have been left behind.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Intrinsic oculomotor nerve hematoma is an exceptional cause of third nerve palsy. This case report illustrates the clinical, radiological, and intraoperative relevance of this rare pathological finding. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old woman with a 12-year history of gross total resection of cerebellar medulloblastoma and posterior whole-brain radiotherapy presented with complete left oculomotor palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a left-sided, perimesencephalic cistern, small, round lesion with a fluid level. Digital subtraction angiography demonstrated no evidence of vascular abnormalities. INTERVENTION: A pterional craniotomy was performed, and the left oculomotor nerve was exposed. A blackish intrinsic lesion was detected in its cisternal segment near the uncus. The lesion was incised, and liquid compatible with a subacute noncoagulated hematoma was drained. Three months after surgery, the patient had partial recovery from diplopia and extraocular muscle function. CONCLUSION: We reviewed the literature and found four cases of oculomotor nerve intrinsic hematoma. These cases were all associated with hematological diseases, trauma, or solid tumors, and, as a group, these patients had poor outcomes. In the present report, the possibility of radiotherapy-induced vasculopathy as a predisposing factor is discussed. Surgical removal of an intrinsic nerve hematoma is probably helpful in the functional recovery of these patients.

<div><table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="left"><tbody><tr><td align="left" valign="top"><p class="AbstractText">Malaysia is likely to introduce new laws on social enterprises of taxation. However, the important questions are whether the said laws are adequate. This study explores previous research on social enterprises and taxation to gain a further understanding through a systematic literature review on social enterprises and taxation from the Malaysian perspective. This is normative legal research. The data was gathered through library research which consisted of numerous publications. This study concludes that tax and social enterprises, perhaps due to the different economic structures in each country, result in taxation being slightly discussed by previous scholars. Nevertheless, we clearly define social enterprises from different perspectives, including the characteristics present in social enterprises. Moreover, the perspective regarding tax relief for social enterprises in Malaysia has been highlighted. Although Malaysia has introduced a new policy to support its social enterprises with Social Enterprise Accreditation, a more significant regulatory or tax incentives approach is needed to support social enterprises in Malaysia.</p></td></tr></tbody></table></div>

AbstractPopular and prize-winning writer Norman Mailer has advanced a view of American politics and society that he calls “left conservatism.” This paper analyzes elements of Mailer's critique and describes how the parts fit together. Special attention is given to his interpretation of economic history and social psychology, his vision of moral health that he associates with the term “hipster,” and his fear of a new political mentality in the United States that he conveys through a neologism, the “wad.” The paper closes with a sketch of the ways Mailer's left conservatism both dovetails with and departs from the concerns and arguments of other contemporary American conservative thinkers.

A case of hypervitaminosis A with secondary entrapment and compression of the left brachial plexus nerve roots is described. A 9-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair, fed a home-made diet based on raw pork liver, was submitted for examination for a left forelimb lameness that evolved to paralysis over a 2-month period. Clinical examination revealed a flaccid paralysis and atrophy of all left forelimb muscles. An ipsilateral Horner's syndrome was also noted. Radiological examination of the cervical and thoracic spine showed massive new bone formation at the ventral aspect of the second cervical to sixth thoracic vertebra. The diagnosis of hypervitaminosis A was made, based on the clinical and radiographic findings, as well as the determination of serum vitamin A concentration, which was 630 μg/dl, three times above the upper normal limit for this species. Despite the unfavourable initial prognosis, the cat progressively regained function of the affected limb approximately 6 months after the diet was changed to a commercial canned food.

E.P. Thompson was nursed on a mother's milk of transatlantic missionary work and writings on the Middle East that reached back to the last half of the nineteenth century. Fathered on Bengali literature, the poetry of the Great War, cricket with the likes of Nehru, and the struggle for Indian independence, Thompson was born into a highly literate and deeply politicized global village. Small wonder that at seventeen he was an anti-fascist and a soldier. But he took a wide Left turn, following in a brother's footsteps, to become a Marxist and a Communist in his twenties, only to find himself, by 1956, donning dissident dress, leading an exodus from the Communist Party of Great Britain, building a revolutionary New Left in the seemingly unpropitious climate of the late 1950s.

Abstract In this study, we establish some new Hermite-Hadamard type inequalities for s-convex functions in the second sense using the post-quantum calculus. Moreover, we prove a new ( p , q ) \left(p,q) -integral identity to prove some new Ostrowski type inequalities for ( p , q ) \left(p,q) -differentiable functions. We also show that the newly discovered results are generalizations of comparable results in the literature. Finally, we give application to special means of real numbers using the newly proved inequalities.

The popliteal pterygium syndrome is very rare, and is characterized by a congenital popliteal web accompanying the genitourinary, craniofacial, and musculoskeletal anomalies. We described a case of presumably popliteal pterygium syndrome with severe right popliteal web, right renal agenesis, left bifurcated ninth rib, urethral orifice in the vagina, right presacral discoloration resembling A-V malformation, imperforate anus, skin dimple in the left gluteal region, right calcaneovalgus foot with supernumerary digits and aberrant profunda femoris artery. This is the first report of this combination in the pertinent literature.

Cancer metastasis and recurrence are the leading causes of cancer-related death. Tumor cells which leave the primary or secondary tumors and shed into the bloodstream are called circulating tumor cells (CTC). These cells are the key drivers of cancer dissemination to surrounding tissues and to distant organs. The use of CTC in clinical practice necessitates the deep insight into their biology, as well as into their role in cancer evasion of immune surveillance, tumor resistance to chemo- radio- and immunotherapies and metastatic dormancy. Aim. The purpose of the work was to review the current knowledge on the CTC biology, as well as the prospects for their use for the diagnosis and targeted treatment of metastatic disease. Methods. The work proposed the integrative literature review using MEDLINE, Biological Abstracts and EMBASE databases. Results. This review summarizes and discusses historical milestones and current data concerning СTС biology, the main stages of their life cycle, their role in metastatic cascade, clinical prospects for their use as markers for the diagnosis and prognostication of the disease course, as well as targets for cancer treatment. Conclusions. Significant progress in the area of CTC biology and their use in cancer theranostics convincingly proved the attractiveness of these cells as targets for cancer prognosis and therapy. The effective use of liquid biopsy with quantitative and phenotypic characteristics of CTCs is impeded by the imperfection of the methodology for taking biological material and by the lack of reliable markers for assessing the metastatic potential of CTCs of various origins. The variety of mechanisms of tumor cells migration and invasion requires the development of complex therapeutic approaches for anti-metastatic therapy targeting CTCs. Efforts to address these key issues could help developing new and effective cancer treatment strategies.

Abstract A new scenario is proposed regarding the origin of the Ninus: the text may have been written in Parthia halfway through the 1st century BC. This article offers a proposal for the plot of the first part of this work, and speculation on whether the motifs of the Ninus have left their mark on Persian literature. The existence of another Greek lost novel, where the main character would be Semiramis, is suggested.

Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party has allowed age to emerge as a dramatic new axis of political division. This article treats the political generation gap as, in part, a transformation in class composition. Most notably, starting with the political age divide makes recognition of a shift toward an asset-based economy hard to avoid. The economic crisis of 2008, and the British government responses to it, have provoked a contradiction between the two main avenues through which neoliberal subjectivities are trained. While neoliberal institutional reform and the styles of management that accompany it continue to train the young in line with theories of human capital, the specific nature of their entrainment in bonds of debt increasingly undermine the notions of meritocracy on which the human capital metaphor implicitly depends. This contradiction opens up possibilities for constructing more open conceptions of the future which can, in turn, be embedded within institutions yet to be created.

One cannot be responsible for a generic truth, argues Badiou in his critical rejoinder to Sartre; one can only be its militant. Challenging Badiou’s formulation, I propose that his plea for a new stage of the communist hypothesis, which unfolds in the wake of subjective decomposition of the Left, must draw upon the Sartrean notion of collective responsibility to affirm interminable inscription of the egalitarian axiom in a novel political sequence without forcing a violent realisation of equality. Encapsulated in an enigmatic formula, ‘one and one make one,’ Sartrean ethics of the Same compel the Badiouian militant subject to heed the excluded demands of the new proletariat insofar as the latter occupies ‘a point of exile where it is possible that something, finally, might happen.’

We herein present our patient with left MCDK, the associated symptoms were the left flank pain and left flank mass. Though conservative management is proven to have some favourable outcomes, a nephrectomy was done for our patient due to the increasing intensity of pain and abdominal mass which was affecting the patient’s quality of life. Left sub-costal extraperitoneal nephrectomy was performed successfully at the CJ Oppong theatre of Sunyani Teaching Hospital in Ghana which gave a new life full of joy to our patient. We, therefore, recommend nephrectomy for a patient with increasing symptoms that reduce quality of life and early childhood screening for MCDK.

Abstract This article explores and analyses several remarkable parallels between two unique cultural spaces, namely, that of the Korčula Summer School and that of the Kurorte – the Grand Spas of Central Europe. Though distinct from one another with respect to their historical as well as topographical locations within Europe, it is as cultural spaces that the two share their least apparent – but perhaps most significant – points of affinity. Just as Baden-Baden had served as the ‘summer capital of Europe’ for one set of cultural elites across political, linguistic and national boundaries, so did Korčula offer a space for cultural and intellectual exchange for philosophers from both sides of the Cold War. The article demonstrates how both of these spaces were marked by their shared internationalism, their political engagement, their privilege, their respective distance from daily social orders, and their intellectual intensity. Thus, it is suggested that Central-European Kurort culture – commonly considered a belle-époque phenomenon – did indeed survive the Great Wars, and found new expressions in a post-war, socialist context.
