word for ‘nature.’ Th e lack of such terminology stems from the fact that the division between the human realm and the environment we live in has not been (historically or culturally) as separated as it is in the modern world. However, while there are no traditional words for ‘nature’ in Mayan languages, some of the languages use descriptive terms or neologisms that are oft en translated as ‘nature’ in dictionaries and other linguistic sources. The focus of this article is to understand the concept of nature in the Maya worldview based primarily on linguistic sources.

Resumo:

An experimental investigation was performed to ascertain the nature of turbulence in a narrow apex angle isosceles triangular duct. The study involved the design and construction of a low noise, low turbulence wind tunnel that had an isosceles triangular test section with an apex angle of 11.5[degrees]. Experiments involved the measurement of velocity fluctuations using hot wire anemometry and wall pressure fluctuations using a condenser microphone. Measurement of the velocity fluctuations reconfirms the coexistence of laminar and turbulent regions at a given cross section for a range of Reynolds numbers. The laminar region is concentrated closer to the apex while the turbulent region is found closer to the base. The point of transition is a function of the Reynolds number and moves closer to the apex as the flow rate is increased. Moreover, it was found in this investigation that traditional scaling of the turbulent statistical quantities do not hold good in this geometry. Although velocity fluctuations showed distinctive flow regimes, no such distinction could be seen in the dynamic wall pressure data. The nature of the dynamic wall pressure was uniform throughout the entire cross section suggesting that wall pressure fluctuations, unlike the velocity fluctuations, are able to travel from the base to the apex, without being damped. This implies that the relationship between the velocity and the pressure fluctuations applicable in the other systems does not hold well in a narrow apex angle isosceles triangular duct. Further, the typical scaling relationships applied to wall pressure spectra of other geometries doesn't apply in this scenario and the ratio of the RMS pressure fluctuation to the mean shear is much higher compared to a flat plate or pipe flow situation.

Este artículo discute los procesos de modernización minera que se han dado en Latinoamérica, particularmente en el contexto de una nueva geografía de industrialización tardía cuyo centro gravitacional ha girado hacia las economías del Este asiático. A través de la crítica marxista de la ecología, se pretende explicar la manera en que tanto el territorio como el ser humano se han visto despojados de su especificidad concreta para pasar a ser parte de los poderes enajenados del capital. La intensificación en el uso del suelo que se da tras la robotización y computarización de la actividad minera no solo ha convertido el entorno biogeofísico en un momento constitutivo de las fuerzas de producción: también ha implicado la transformación sistemática de campesinados en muchedumbres que se desempeñan como meros apéndices de los sistemas técnicos de la extracción, o como poblaciones sobrantes. El llamado superciclo de materias primas se inserta de esta manera en una nueva fase de acumulación mundial, cuya determinación concreta es el incremento en la productividad a través de la automatización de la maquinaria y la fragmentación de la subjetividad productiva de la clase obrera internacional.
This article addresses the processes of technological modernization that have taken place in Latin America’s mining industry, especially in the context of a new geography of late industrialization whose gravitational center has shifted towards East Asian economies. Through the Marxist critique of ecology, the paper explains the ways in which both human and nonhuman natures have been emptied of their concrete specificity in order to be transformed into the alienatedpowers of capital. The intensification in land use that has followed the robotization and computerization of large-scale mining has not only reconfigured the biogeophysical environment into a constitutive moment of the forces of production, but also entailed the systematic transformation of peasantries into dispossessed multitudes that act as mere appendages of technical systems of extraction, or as surplus populations. The reorganization of the mining industry into global supply chains requires rethinking extraction beyond primary commodity production, and interrogating its organic unity with the modern mode of production generally considered.

L'octroi de garanties bancaires à la couverture du risque de non remboursement des crédits obtenus, comporte un coût pour l'entreprise et, notamment, pour les petites et moyennes entreprises (P. M. E. ). Le cout global lié à la garantie des dettes comprend deux aspects : les couts directs (immédiat et futur) et les couts induits (permanent et potentiel). Ces deux aspects du cout de la garantie ont été mis en évidence à partir de données empiriques. Les couts directs sont, dans une certaine mesure, quantifiables. Le résultat de leur analyse montre la primauté du cout direct des suretés personnelles sur celui des suretés réelles. Mais, la garantie hypothécaire engendre le cout direct le plus important dans l'ordre des suretés réelles. En revanche, les couts induits ne sont pas quantifiables dans tous les cas envisageables. Ceux-ci ont donc été mis en évidence à partir de la perception "consciente" des risques générateurs, auprès d'un échantillon de 50 dirigeants de P. M. E. Ces couts peuvent être aussi importants que ceux dits directs. Par ailleurs, la perception des risques générateurs des couts induits, chez les dirigeants enquêtés, est fonction, plus fréquemment, de certaines caractéristiques de structure de leur entreprise que d'autres. Le cout global des différentes modalités de garantie étudiées demeure donc partiellement quantifiable. Le problème de mesure est lié à la difficulté de maitriser le caractère conditionnel et incertain de certaines sources de ce cout. Néanmoins, il a été proposé, dans une optique de prise de décision de financement assorti de garantie, un essai de formalisation donnant une vision synthétique du cout réel de la garantie de type sureté réelle. Des voies de prolongements souhaitables de cette recherche ont, également, été proposées
The need to provide collateral securities to cover risks of unpaid debts implies that some financial costs will be incurred by companies and particularly, small and medium-sized firms. The total cost linked to any guarantee comprises two aspects : direct costs involving the immediate and futur cost and, induced costs involving the permanent and potential cost. The nature of these two types of costs has been emphasized here empirically. Direct costs and, to a certain extent, be quantified. The result of their analysis shows that the direct cost of personal securities takes precedence over that of real securities. But mortgage gives rise to the highest level of direct costs when compared to all other real securities. On the other hand, induced costs can not be quantified in all possible cases. A survey involving 50 managers of small and medium-sized companies shows that induced costs are highlighted through the entrepreneur's awareness of the risks generating them. These costs may also be just as important as direct costs. Incidentally, in the case of those companies comprising the above sample, the manager's conception of risks generating induced costs is a function of certain structural characteristics of his firm rather than its other features. However, the total cost of the different types of guarantees studied remains only partially measurable. The measurement problem is linked to the difficulty in controlling the uncertain nature of some sources of this cost because the latter are subject to numerous conditions. Nevertheless, it has been suggested that a formal approach can be taken in order to determine the real cost of guarantees involved in corporate financial policies. Finally, some propositions, for further research, are also made

Au regard des débats actuels polarisés autour du concept de « personne », cette recherche se donne comme but d’explorer l’approche du théologien orthodoxe Dumitru Stăniloae relative à la personne dans son versant anthropologique. À cet effet, le présent travail tâche d’une part de repérer et de révéler les éléments qui édifient sa réflexion de la personne, à savoir les composantes de la personnéité humaine, et d’autre part, les sources à la fois théologiques et philosophiques ayant inspiré et influencé de manière déterminante notre auteur. Expression d’une jonction de la théologie patristique orientale (byzantine) et de la pensée moderne, la personne comporte ainsi, chez Staniloae, une structure ontologique-communautaire, dont le pôle ontologique plonge ses racines dans l’héritage des Pères et le pôle relationnel ou communautaire, dans les avancées de la réflexion moderne : associée à l’hypostase des anciens, la personne se définit comme mode de subsistance ou d’existence réelle de l’être, tandis qu’assimilée au sujet et au moi modernes, elle se présente comme facteur conscient et libre en relation d’amour avec autrui. Représentée donc comme subsistance en soi et existence en communion, la personne manifeste, chez notre auteur, l’aboutissement de toute une série de confluences : du passé et du présent, de l’Orient et de l’Occident, de la théologie et de la philosophie, de l’orthodoxie et des deux autres confessions chrétiennes
Considering the current debates polarized around the concept of "person", this research aims to explore the approach of the orthodox theologian Dumitru Staniloae relative to the person in its anthropological side. In this purpose, the present work tries on one hand to identify and to reveal the elements which compose his reflection of the person, namely the components of the human personhood, and on the other hand, the theological and philosophical sources having inspired and influenced our author. As a junction of the oriental patristic theology and the modern thought, the person contains, at Staniloae, an ontological-communitarian structure. The ontological pole plunges its roots into the inheritance of the Fathers and the relational or communitarian pole, in the progress of the modern reflection: associated with the hypostasis, the person is defined as mode of subsistence or real existence of the being, whereas likened to the subject and to the modern I, it appears as conscious and free factor in relation of love with others. Thus represented as subsistence in itself and existence in communion, the concept of person is the outcome of a whole series of confluences: of the past and of the present, of the East and of the West, of the theology and of the philosophy, of the orthodoxy and of two other Christian confessions

Sous l'effet de l'utilisation répétée de la notion de propriété des créances par le législateur et par les juridictions, l'urgence de l'élaboration d'une théorie de la propriété des créances apparaît. Or ce sujet suscite encore controverses, réserves, interrogations et incertitudes. L'alliance de la propriété et des créances apparaît souvent comme une hérésie. En effet, la notion de propriété des créances est généralement condamnée, non seulement parce que la propriété des biens corporels est considérée comme la seule propriété authentique, mais aussi parce qu'elle semble s'intégrer difficilement dans la distinction traditionnelle des droits réels et des droits personnels. Pourtant n'est-il pas logique de se poser la question de savoir si cet usage réitéré de l'expression « propriété des créances » ne constitue qu'un dérapage linguistique sans portée réelle, ou s'il s'agit de l'expression d'une réalité qui se serait manifestée par le vecteur du langage ? La condamnation doctr inale de la propriété des créances ne repose-t-elle pas sur des présupposés théoriques ? Le principal enjeu de cette thèse consiste à se prononcer sur la possibilité théorique de la notion de propriété des créances. Peut-on juridiquement employer le terme propriété, dans son sens technique, pour désigner la relation qui unit le créancier à sa créance, ou bien s'il faut s'en tenir à la notion de titularité ? Au vrai, cette question de l'existence du concept de propriété des créances est primordiale car elle est aussi préjudicielle à celle de la protection de la créance par le biais du droit de propriété. Une fois l'adaptation du droit de propriété aux créances réalisée, ces biens incorporels n'auront effectivement plus qu'à se glisser dans le moule de la propriété et qu'à se nourrir de l'intérêt fondamental de cette notion, le bénéfice de sa protection assurément très efficace. Au fil de ces travaux, l'on découvre néanmoins que seul l'assouplissement de la rigueur de la défin ition classique de la propriété concilié à l'affermissement de celle des créances rend possible la compatibilité des deux notions
Under the effect of repeated use of the concept of ownership of receivables by the legislature and the courts, the urgency of developing a theory of property claims appears. This subject still arouses controversy, reservations, questions and uncertainties. The combination of property and debt is often seen as a heresy. Indeed, the notion of ownership of the claims is generally condemned, not only because the ownership of tangible property is considered the only real property, but also because it seems to fit easily into the traditional distinction between real rights and personal rights. Yet is it not logical to ask whether the repeated use of the phrase "property claims" only a linguistic slippage without real significance, or whether the expression a reality which would have emerged by the vector of language? The doctrinal condemnation of property claims is not she pa on theoretical assumptions? The main goal of this thesis is to decide on the theoretical possibility of the concept of property claims. Can we legally use the term ownership in its technical sense, to designate the relation between the creditor's claim, or whether to stick to the notion of authorship? In truth, this question of the existence of the concept of ownership of receivables is important because it is also referred to the protection of the debt through property rights. Once the adjustment of property rights claims made, these intangible assets will effectively more than slipping into the mold of the property and that feed on the fundamental interest of this notion, the benefit of its certainly very effective protection. Throughout this work, however, one discovers that only the relaxation of the rigor of the classical definition of property reconciled to the consolidation of claims that makes possible the compatibility of both concepts

Resumo:

The anxiety provoked by acknowledgement of the imminent end of existence or death is probably the one which agitates a human being most deeply. The attempt of this paper is not to give an answer as to how to reach immortality, but to explore the author's assumption that for acknowledgement of the mystery of death it is necessary first to discover a being's authentic identity. That is to discover her/his real essence which is hidden under the 'artificial' identity, where this identity is considered the being's ego, an identity formed upon the relative truth of life. The truths of life are relative because they are established by the people, thus they are based upon the changeable and contradictory nature of human beings. The focus of the paper is on researching the establishment of a being's identity, which is formed through she/he having two contradictory relationships with other human beings. The first one is negation and the other one is of acknowledgement of the identity of the other. The examination deals with art works of several contemporary artists, where most of them have experienced war. The philosophical framework of this examination uses the texts of French philosopher Emmanual Levinas, amongst others

Resumo:

A socio-natural history assumes the space of human definition. "Man" is defined through two points: "Homo sapiens" described in terms of science and "everyday man" represented in everyday experience. "Homo oeconomicus" becomes the intersection of scientific discourse and everyday knowledge. He fully coincides with the definable "man". "Man consuming" appropriates the social meanings of man so that every interaction and relationship concerns economic meanings. Society in the process of self-description produces social constructs including the construct of "man". Thus, economic discourse collapses with the production of the social. Economy is hermeticized and becomes the standard of social meanings. However, the production of social constructs is preceded by the production of their consumption as a possibility of their existence as social. This production of production (through consumption) closes in on itself. It becomes clear that "consumer society" is constructible. It is possible to reach the limits of economic discourse by "reading" consumption as non-social, i.e., meaningless, production. The non-social turns out to be a null construct as well as a potential possibility of new meanings. Thus "Homo oeconomicus" turns out to be precisely the construct that produces consumption, and thus the production of new social constructs. Abstract We study the S𝒪(2) symmetric deformation of circular rings. The equations of motion are based on general partial differential equations governing the elastodynamics of geometrically exact rings, which have been formulated by Dempsey [2], based on the work of Libai and Simmonds [6]. Thus, the formulation is valid for arbitrary pressure forcing, large deformations, and finite strains, although the results are tempered by a linear constitutive relation and an assumption of plane strain. With the assumption that the deformation retains S𝒪(2) symmetry, the partial differential equations are reduced to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations. Within this restricted space of solutions, we study the existence and stability of relative equilibria and discuss the effects of constant hydrostatic pressure on the dynamical response. Specifically, we find that interaction between inertial effects arising from rotational motion and the combined elastic and external pressure forces can produce unexpected behavior, including the existence of a “buckled” state which retains the symmetry, yet physically implies that material planes do not lie in the radial direction. Such a state is shown to effect the large-amplitude response of the system in a singular limit of the governing equations.

Resumo:

Biodiversity can be defined as the diversity of ecosystems, expressed as symbioses, habitats, landscapes, species diversity and genetic diversity within species, i.e. the totality of the gene pool that constitutes nature at the global level. In the current period, but especially in the last half century, there has been a steady loss of biodiversity with major consequences for the living world and severe impacts on human society. Biodiversity is a fundamental basis for human existence and humanity is itself a part of biodiversity and our existence in the world would be impossible without it. Quality of life, economic competitiveness, workforce and security all rely on this biodiversity, which can be seen as natural capital. Through this prism, biodiversity can be sustainably exploited through certain types of tourism. Initially, its exploitation started with rural tourism, ecotourism. The expansion of these types of tourism beyond certain limits has led to unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, despite claims of minor impact on nature. In this context, it can be said that in the near future, the most recommended type of tourism will be nature tourism, which excludes the construction of tourist structures near or within all protected areas so as not to damage the integrity of the natural environment and not to degrade the natural capital resources on which economic and social development is based.

My contribution, rooted in functional and systemic grammar, is based on the assumption that though discourse as a social behaviour and verbal interaction has been studied by great minds for decades, the dynamism of human evolution and the consequent changes in communicative strategies can hardly leave discourse analysts immune to a whole spectrum of new challenges. These are evoked by changes in the scope of items considered to be relevant for present-day research, by blurring the traditional borderlines between categories (written manifestation of spoken discourse in chatting), but before all by the existence of language corpora offering the immensity of data across genres, language varieties and language interfaces. A brief introduction (Part 1) will be followed by three main parts, focusing on reasons for multifacetedness in discourse (Part 2), whimsical nature of discourse (Part 3), and hands-on experience with overt language manifestations of vagueness, as exemplified by English placeholders (Mrs Thingy, John Whatsisname, whatchamacallit, so-and-so) emergent from the BNC and COCA corpora (Part 4). The aim is twofold: to map the facets which contribute to patterning and variation in discourse shaping, and by using authentic language data amplify the role of peripheral language devices in interaction.

"The ecological environment has been an issue of concern in the world, because it directly and persistently affects the lives of humans and creatures. Human history has shown that some civilizations in the world declined due to the deterioration of the ecological environment. Facing the challenge of environmental pollution and ecological imbalance, the goal is to find the most natural way to help people survive in a natural environment, and develop sustainably. The article examines the villagers’ behavior in Northern Thailand with the forest in which they have long lived, showing a close, friendly and harmonious connection between humans and nature here. To serve the research, field survey and philosophical abstraction methods are used in combination. From this specific case, the article discusses a suitable and comprehensive approach to the relationship between humans and nature, based on understanding and respecting nature, considering humans as a component of nature, aiming to both protect the environment, preserve cultural identity, and link the interests of local residents with sustainable development. In addition, the article also overviews a number of other approaches to ecological environmental issues, to provide diverse perspectives. And finally, green growth is the motto that the article offers as a proposal for sustainable existence and development on Earth."

Lake Tikvara is the most significant hydrological unit of the "Tikvara" Nature Park. The paper presents the results of hydrobiological research with the aim of monitoring the fish fauna and relevant ecological factors of the "Tikvara" hydroecosystem from 2018 to 2023. The association of selected abiotic parameters, including changes in the water level of the Danube, with changes in the structure of the phytoplankton, benthic, and nektonic communities of Tikvara was analyzed. The results indicated the existence of a connection between the period of high and low water levels and the structure of the investigated communities, which was also reflected, indirectly, by the association of changes in biotic communities with the variation of certain abiotic (temperature, transparency) and biotic components (intraspecies relationships) of this unique hydroecosystem

The Commercial Agriculture for Smallholders and Agribusiness (CASA) Programme aims to drive global investment towards inclusive climate-resilient agri-food systems that increase smallholder incomes. CASA's research component has recently identified the challenges faced in mobilizing climate finance in agriculture, and particularly in climate adaptation, as well as the existence of a funding gap for small and medium-sized agriculture enterprises (agri-SMEs) of around $106 billion (ISF Advisors, 2022). Of particular concern is the minimal funding that would be needed to help smallholder farmers adapt to the challenge of climate change and increase their resilience. Adaptation for smallholder farmers might include investment in drought-resistant seeds, technologies and practices that enable climate-smart agriculture, investment in improved water management, and investment in improved management of food waste, including facilities for storage of crops. Smallholder farmers may also benefit from interventions that protect the natural environment on which they depend (e.g. interventions relating to water supplies, soil quality or soil stabilization), or from activities that augment their incomes through payments for the protection of natural capital. Investment in these nature-based solutions (NbS) can potentially contribute to capital flows to smallholder farmers, even though they are often primarily designed to deliver carbon sequestration benefits to companies or investors seeking a 'net zero' position. This report seeks to answer the following questions, which were explored through interviews with key sectoral stakeholders (principally in Asia): What types of investments in agricultural adaptation and NbS are being made by different categories of investors? What are the barriers to investment in climate adaptation in agriculture and in NbS? What opportunities are emerging for these types of investment? What partnerships are required to help drive capital towards these areas of investment? What evidence is needed to drive capital towards these areas of investment?

Using data from the latest edition of the Italian Time Use Survey (ITUS, 2013–2014), we analyse 31,309 childcare episodes to investigate the relationship betweenmultitasking (i.e., the combination of childcare with housework tasks) and parents’enjoyment of the time they spent on childcare, with a gender perspective. To this end,we rely on information from the episode enjoyment scores the respondents used toevaluate the degree of (un)pleasantness associated with the different activities theyrecorded in a daily diary. These episode enjoyment scores are a novelty in the ITUS,and provide a unique measure of the respondents’ momentary assessments of theirsubjective well-being. Our results highlight the existence of a negative relationshipbetween multitasking and parental well-being when spending time on childcare forboth mothers and fathers, regardless of the nature of the childcare activity theywere performing (i.e., routine or recreational childcare). Our findings add to priorresearch by shedding new light on the role of multitasking as a relevant contextualcharacteristic of care that affects the well-being of fathers, as well as of mothers.

A further five activities were thematic in nature. Bulletin 612 presents results from 12 of these endeavours, including integrated regional bedrock geoscience studies, geophysical surveys, and basin analyses, as well as thematic thermochronology, geochemistry and large igneous province syntheses. The results highlight that GEM has contributed to new era of understanding of the northern Canadian Shield, expanding its framework substantially and developing an increasingly complex model of Archean cratons, Archean/Proterozoic microcontinents, and juvenile Paleoproterozoic crust that highlights the existence of a dozen new pericratonic to exotic ribbon microcontinents within a mosaic once considered as mostly large cratonic masses welded by Paleoproterozoic orogens. This emerging picture brings additional questions for future northern studies - particularly in the granularity of subdivision of the largest blocks, the impact of enigmatic earliest Paleoproterozoic orogens, and dynamics of assembly of exotic and little-known terranes.

As COP26 approaches, governments are facing calls to increase the ambition of their climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. The mobilization of climate finance will be key to meeting these goals, prompting the need for renewed attention on how to enhance the coordination of existing funds and thus increase their effectiveness, efficiency and equity. The climate finance landscape is fragmented due to the variety of actors involved at different levels. Coordination difficulties emerge in multiple arenas and reflect the diversity of funding sources, implementation channels, and sectors relevant for climate action (Lundsgaarde, Dupuy and Persson, 2018). The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development has identified over 90 climate-specific funds. Most of them are multilateral. While bilateral climate finance remains significant, growth in multilateral funding has been the main driver of recent funding increases and remains a focus of international negotiations. Practitioners often highlight organizational resource constraints – such as staffing levels, the continuity of personnel, or the availability of adequate information management systems – as factors limiting coordination. In this brief, we argue that improving climate finance coordination requires considering coordination challenges in a political context where both fund secretariats and external stakeholders play an important role in shaping collaboration prospects. To illustrate this point, we highlight the political nature of global-level coordination challenges between the multilateral Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and Green Climate Fund (GCF), as well as national-level challenges in Kenya and Zambia. Key challenges influencing coordination relate to the governance of climate funds, domestic bureaucratic politics in recipient countries, and the existence of multiple coordination frameworks at the country level.

To achieve the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 7 “Clean and Affordable Energy”, the most economically viable option for servicing the part of the population that is too remote or for which the national grid extension is too expensive are distributed renewable energy solutions (DREs), that is, standalone solar home systems (SHSs), mini grids, and swarm gridsi. By 2030, more than 290 million people could be connected to mini grids. Following a top-down approach to electricity access, countries of the Global South, with support of international aid and development funding, are accelerating their national grid expansion. As the national grid reaches their customers, the private sector (DRE companies) is put at danger of having to either relocate their assets or abandon them. At the same time, the DRE end-user, reached by the national grid, faces several challenges due to being exposed to a double infrastructure. These challenges can be of technical and financial nature and are caused by the assets becoming abundant or needing additional equipment to be suitable for national grid and DREs. In our new paper we investigate a technically and economically viable solution for the co-existence of the national grid−a centralized infrastructure−with mostly decentralized, renewable energy infrastructure in Global South countries. At the intersection of these two electrification pathways the question arises if the two approaches can be integrated to the benefit of society by maintaining existing assets. We assume the technical link to be a bidirectional inverter and a battery representing the point of common coupling (PCC) between national grid and currently off-grid systems. We then suggest to apply a cost recovery approach to calculate the economic value of a community power purchase agreement (C-PPA) that allows the community to enter into a trade agreement with the national grid to export at a specified rate.

É necessário um novo paradigma para adaptar a infraestrutura existente, visando o planejamento e a construção de uma nova infraestrutura, nacional e regionalmente. Esse novo paradigma deve se basear no conceito de uma configuração espacial e considerar as soluções baseadas na natureza e o conhecimento dos povos Indígenas e das comunidades locais. A infraestrutura de transporte existente aumentou o desmatamento na região. Por isso, é fundamental que qualquer investimento em transporte seja acompanhado de uma forte regulamentação e fiscalização para evitar novas perdas florestais. Um sistema de transporte mais eficiente considera todas as opções de transporte (aquático, aéreo, ferroviário, rodoviário) de maneira integrada.

This study estimates the effects of the 1970 Ancash earthquake on human capital accumulation on the affected and subsequent generation, 37 years after the shock, using the Peruvian censuses of 1993 and 2007. The main finding is that males affected by the earthquake in utero completed on average 0. 5 years less schooling while females affected by the earthquake completed 0. 8 years less schooling. Surprisingly, those whose mothers were affected at birth by the earthquake have 0. 4 less years of education, while those whose fathers were affected by the earthquake at birth have no effects on their education. The evaluation of other outcomes also suggests that the level of welfare of the affected individuals has been negatively impacted in the long run. The present investigation supports previous literature on shocks in early childhood, providing evidence of the existence of intergenerational transmission of shocks.

Resumo:

This paper tests the existence of capital-skill complementarity in the manufacturing sector using quasi-experimental increases in the relative price of low-skill labor induced by the US shale boom. I find that in response to the shale boom, local manufacturing firms decreased their relative usage of low-skill labor while increasing their capital expenditures. These endogenous changes in the input mix allowed manufacturers to maintain the value added despite the increase in the price of low-skill labor, avoiding the potential short-term crowding-out effects of the natural resource boom. Combined with the findings of previous work, my results indicate that the degree of skill substitutable with capital in manufacturing has increased over the last several decades.
