Most current theories and models of second language speech perception are grounded in the notion that learners acquire speech sound categories in their target language. In this paper, this classic idea in speech perception is revisited, given that clear evidence for formation of such categories is lacking in previous research. To understand the debate on the nature of speech sound representations in a second language, an operational definition of “category” is presented, and the issues of categorical perception and current theories of second language learning are reviewed. Following this, behavioral and neuroimaging evidence for and against acquisition of categorical representations is described. Finally, recommendations for future work are discussed. The paper concludes with a recommendation for integration of behavioral and neuroimaging work and theory in this area.

Resumo:
The problem of popularization of scientific knowledge about the nature of the native land among students in higher and secondary schools is considered in connection with the requirements of the state for the formation of a holistic scientific picture of the world among graduates of educational institutions. The purpose of the article is to clear options for popularizing geographical knowledge in a regional context and their implementation into audience of schoolchildren, college and university students. Method of generalization of both options for popularizing scientific knowledge and information on global changes of temperature on the planet, their manifestation within the Novosibirsk Region and the role of human in these changes is used as the main one. The Interfaculty Technopark of Universal Pedagogical Competencies is an effective integrative platform where it is possible to combine the pedagogical efforts by school teachers, college and university lecturers, and experts in the field of geographical education. These activities help to educate the young generation and form information literacy on local history and tourism by providing the reliable facts on the natural environment. An example of science popularization on nature of the native land on the changes of global temperature in the Novosibirsk Region has been shown. Options for the application of the topic of temperature fluctuations in the thesis statement as one of the current issues in the educational process are proposed.

Resumo:
In order to identify alien plant species on the territory of the Yuganskiy Nature Reserve (Western Siberia), cordons, stations and the adjacent territory were examined where in total 44 species from 40 genera, 18 families, 14 orders, 2 classes were identified. 26 species are new for the Yuganskiy Nature Reserve. The largest number of species is represented in the families Poaceae (8), Rosaceae (7) and Asteraceae (6). Of these, 17 species were introduced during the use of the research station. Dispersal of introduced species was not revealed. However, the habit, regular flowering and fruiting of most of the examined plants indicate their high vitality in the new ecological condition. Perennial garden plants such as strawberries, spring onions, raspberries reduce their area under the pressure of local meadow species. An annotated list of species is given, containing information about the place of discovery, ecological conditions of growth, date of observation, observer or collector, and the collection number of the specimen in the herbarium of the Yuganskiy Nature Reserve.

Resumo:
The article has selected Henry Rider Haggard's adventure fiction, King Solomon's Mines, for its eco-feminist critical scrutiny. In so doing, it usurps the working definition of the term "ecofeminism" as a tool of inquiry. Then it demonstrates how the rhetoric of empire constructs and mirrors the African continent in general and people and animals in particular. The article primarily exposes the sinister colonial rhetoric of equating nature - land and animals - with women, thus site for exploration and exploitation opens up. The rhetoric becomes an instrument in defining and understanding them for achieving its political ends which leads to unbridled exploitation of both. The analysis further understands the discursive technique of equating nature and natives to establish the European legitimacy for exploitation of native people and nature.
