Abstract: Considering the importance of Tourism to Brazil, not merely as a commercial activity but as a Sociological and Anthropological instrument, this dissertation has as main purpose to investigate and to analyse the performance of EMBRATUR ¿¿ the governmental body responsible for the regulation of the national tourist sector ¿¿, as an entity devoted to the creation, supplying and divulgation of determined images concerning the Brazilian nation and culture. The present study surveys four decades of EMBRATUR history, emphasizing both the representations of Brazil that in the course of time the agency produced, fixed, reproduced and legitimated as well those which happened to be object of transformation in due time, placing them in the context along with the official policies for the sector. Taking in account fundamental concepts such as "culture", "nationality" and "national identity", this dissertation is pervaded with the intent to understand EMBRATUR as one of the pivotal agents in the establishment of a certain kind of debate on Brazil

Texto completo da fonteFootball fans from Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia started turning into soldiers from 1991. Football fans were on the frontline against police during Milosevic’s fall as well as in the opposition to Croatian president Tudjman. Football fans were able to mobilize in huge numbers with extreme violence against gay pride parades. Football fans assaulted and set the US embassy in Belgrade on fire in 2008. These facts are at the crossroads between football through the actors at stake, politics through their aims and meanings, and identity regarding the founding ideas upon which they rely. It is therefore throughout those facts that interactions between the football world and the political world are a legitimate question to raise. It shall be dealt with not only by taking into account a broad period from the end of communist Yugoslavia to nowadays, but also in a comparative approach between the different states born from Yugoslavia’s collapse. Thus, far from being a futile occupation and an illegitimate social science object, it is necessary to take football seriously regarding the two roles it plays, first as an observation window, second as a political agent of change. Therefore, not only through football but also by football will it be possible to draw a transversal political analysis, be it on the politicisation process from the bottom, on the persistence of an ethno-nationalist paradigm, on whether 2000 can be deemed a deep break in the period from 1991 to nowadays, and on authoritarian practices in the region regardless of the European integration process

Texto completo da fonteThe aim of the thesis is to present watering towns (spas, winter and sea side resorts) in the nineteenth century and to study their development bearing in mind the revolution in transport as well as the new mentalities linked to the phenomenon. Social life (both in its curatives and leisure aspects) and the social models that society responded to are some of the aspects considered in this thesis. Internal politics within the states, diplomatic relations, and international rivalries are especially studied in the context of thermal resorts and the episode of the franco-prussian war of 1870, and its consequences on franco-german relations are especially brought out. Finally, the international clientele of such resorts is observed and the cosmopolitan nature of the spas is considered in relation to the great international crises of the period

Texto completo da fonteDemocracy is predicated on the idea that governments are responsive to the publics which they are elected to represent. In order for elected representatives to govern effectively, they require reliable measures of public opinion. Traditional sources of public opinion research are increasingly complicated by the expanding modalities of communication and accompanying cultural shifts. Diversification of information and communication technologies as well as a steep decline in survey response rates is producing a crisis of confidence in conventional probability sampling. An increasingly rich, yet relatively untapped, source of public opinion takes the form of extraordinarily large, complex datasets commonly referred to as Big Data. These datasets present numerous challenges for statistical inference, not least of which is that they typically take the form of non-probability sample. By combining recent advances in social science, computer science, statistics, and information technology, this thesis, which combines three distinct articles, addresses some of these challenges by developing new and scalable approaches to facilitate the extraction of valuable insights from Big Data. In so doing, it introduces novel approaches to study public opinion and contributes to important theoretical debates within the literature on public opinion research by marshalling the empirical evidence necessary to test theories in political science that were previously unaddressed due to data scarcity. In our first article, Ideological scaling of social media users, we develop a model that predicts the ideology and vote intention of social media users by virtue of the vernacular that they employ in their interactions on social media platforms. In our second article, The symbolic mosaic, we draw from a large online panel survey in Canada to make inferences about the heterogeneous construction of national identities by exploring variance in the attachment to symbols among various publics. Finally, in our third article, Crowdsourcing the vote, we endeavour to draw on the wisdom of the crowd in large, non-random election studies as part of an effort to control for the selection bias inherent to such samples. Each of these studies makes a contribution to our collective understanding of how computational social science can advance theoretical knowledge of the dynamics of public opinion and political behaviour.

Texto completo da fonteThe historical and sociological analysis of the setting up of digital libraries in three heritage institutions (Bibliothèque nationale de France, British Library, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek), from 1990 to 2011, shows how these organisations, which produce and preserve physical cultural heritage, have evolved to produce and preserve digital cultural heritage. The digital library has two aspects: it is a technological innovation and an organisation of its own. As a technological innovation, it is grounded on inventions such as digital photography, web servers, internet, optical character recognition, metadata…These inventions are combined by the action of reference groups (scholars, librarians, computer specialists, public administrations, sponsors, private companies). These groups are either marginal or included in a socio-technical network which creates the digital library. The latter is a technical artefact that evolves from a “suitcase-object” with great interpretive flexibility to a boundary object which satisfies the needs of reference groups taking part in the socio-technical network. A digital library is also an organisation, stemming from the physical library which creates specific departments in charge of controlling major uncertainty zones such as digital technologies and emerging online content providers. The latter compete with national libraries in the diffusion of cultural heritage. Controversies between actors are key moments when actors reveal their opinions concerning the technical artefact: translation is the means to enlist members of the socio-technical network to achieve the temporary closure of the artefact. The socio-technical network evolves with time to create new versions of the artefact

Our focus is to investigate how the process of constitution, metamorphosis and identity rearrangement is organized, from the perspective of liminality, a condition individuals encounter on their paths in the quest for greater financial autonomy. We also strive to understand the crisis inherent to their whereabouts while travelling between different living spaces, in different countries. Our subjects are Italian-Brazilians who work in ice-cream parlors in Germany. These are young people who have been encouraged to acquire an Italian passport through the network in place between the cities of Urussanga (State of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil) and Longarone, Italy, which enables them to be recruited, trained for jobs at these gelaterias, and then later sent to Germany. They develop relationships with these different countries, since they continue to visit their hometowns, where they buy property with the intent to come back permanently one day. We address issues related to the relationships that are built with these countries: inclusion/exclusion, the creation of subjectivities, forms of oppression and identity politics. In this thesis, we address how these individuals deal with living life between places and how this changes their identities. The methodology chosen for data collection was the life story narratives, which have been analyzed based on the identity-metamorphosis-emancipation phrase proposed by Antônio da Costa Ciampa, as well as multi-situated ethnographies and interviews. The past, the present, as well as identity politics all become intertwined in the projects of these ice-cream parlor workers creating a living space that lies between (no) places. These configurations arise due to a constant lack of definition regarding their status, triggered by the socioeconomic, historical and political relationship in which they were socialized and that they recreate, leading to permanent liminality

Texto completo da fonteThis dissertation offers a glimpse into early 20th century Beirut’s musical life by unveiling the type of music that prevailed at the time, the famous singers, the places of singing. It follows the ways in which the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the arrival of the French mandate changed and affected entertainment and leisure in Beirut, by focusing on its evolving musical scene, as it manifested in changing places of consumption, sociality and the distribution of music as a new form of commodity. It does that by studying expert, lay and intellectual debates on music and music criticism in this period, as they emerged in in the press. Moreover, this dissertation looks at how new developments in technologies affected music at the beginning of the 20th century by focusing on how the evolution of the record industry imposed and produced new forms of expressions, of music, and new places of entertainment. A reading of how the social and political transformations in early 20th century Beirut affected and created new forms of entertainment, leisure, musical expressions and commodities allows us to understand the role of music in making a national identity and discourse in the newly established State of Greater Lebanon

Texto completo da fonteFrom 1980 to 2000, the education quality in sub-Saharan Africa decreased gradually under multiple influence. Already characterized by a low level of internal efficiency, schooling and learning outcomes, themselves dotted with regional disparities, gender and unequal access, the transformations of the education sector will be accentuated by the rise in school-age population. To deal with this situation, Governments adopt a curriculum reform at the beginning of 2000 through the Skills-Based Approach.Attached to social justice issues and learning quality, the Skills-Based Approach’ implementation has not always been conducive to rigorous evaluation in the economic literature. Due this situation, our thesis tempts to analyze its transfer and impact by comparing the Ivorian and Senegalese experiences. To achieve this goal, our work has been based on mix methods. In doing so, chapters 1 and 2 successively identify each system particularities and then the curriculum determinants and main objectives. Consecutively, chapter 3 analyzes its transfer, articulation and effectiveness in each educational system, whereas Chapter 4 assesses its impact on internal efficiency and learning quality by a multilevel model.By comparing the results from each methods, we observe that the Skills-based Approach does not explain internal efficiency improvement, which is rather the consequence of inter-cycle transition rules revision. Concerning learning quality, the econometric analysis corroborates the transfer assessment, and suggests a new approach to educational product quality: it insists to pay particular attention to the way in which educational policy is conceived and disseminated

Texto completo da fonteIn the United Kingdom, integration policies have undergone a constant process of redefinition since the urban riots in northern England in 2001. These events, and the London bombings of 2005, which were widely described as resulting from the ethnic segregation of British society, have led to a questioning of the multiculturalist policies implemented since the 1980s and to a review of integration policies. The objective of this research is to determine the ruptures and the continuities in the new political definitions of integration, both at the level of political discourse and of the actual implementation of policy guidelines, and to determine whether there has been indeed a break with multiculturalism between 2001 and 2014. Analysis of speeches and official reports, as well as a field survey on the reforms and on the new arrangements for naturalization lead to several conclusions: On the one hand, it is possible to observe the gradual crystallization of an assimilationist approach to integration that has become more visible since the Conservatives came to power in 2010. On the other hand, however, multiculturalist discourses and policies subsist in various guises; in fact, innovative visions of integration such as ‘community cohesion’ can be understood to have renewed this paradigm in new ways. Likewise, the increasing recognition of religious pluralism in public action suggests what we call a ‘confessionalisation’ of British multiculturalism

Texto completo da fonteThe fact that the PRC nationality policy has been influenced by the Soviet policy is well known and indeed various historic facts reveal different aspects of the influence, a direct, indirect, deliberate and developed or undergone influence. However, the speech of the "Chinese particularism" that appeared in the middle of 1980s implies not only the general policy of the CCP but also the nationality policy. Therefore we can wonder how the CCP in its discourse manage with this influence. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a lot of scholars in the PRC have been researching on nationalities attempting answer to the question of how China, as a "multiethnic socialist State", can avoid the same future as the Soviet Union ? The post-Soviet intellectual reflections in the PRC give us several elements to understand tendencies and concepts developed in PRC nationality policy since the faIl of the USSR and this, till the beginning of 2000s

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis analyzes the political and social function of football in Francoist Spain and during the democratic transition, focusing particularly on two clubs: Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. One is considered the best ambassador of Spain abroad. And the other is an instrument for the mobilization of the democratic opposition, and above all a hub for ethno-social identity related claims at that time. A study about football may at first seem to not to belong within the scientific approach. Yet, beyond sport and entertainment, football is a social phenomenon, the analysis of which is essential to the understanding of contemporary societies. It deserves attention, especially when one is interested in the history of Spain, which is extremely revealing of the socio-cultural and political stakes that football has in this country

Texto completo da fonteCan Catalonia be called a nation, or should it still be considered as a region ? Catalonia's geographical, economic, and above all historical features, together with age-old institutions, would rather confirm the first assumption. Catalonia can be characterized as a nation essentially because of its existing distinctive claim for home rule and the defense of its language. Catalonia has struggled to survive : thanks to its supportive civilian society, the real foundation of catalanism, thanks to the rallying power of its political bodies, in spite of vicissitudes under dictatorial regimes that were bent on destroying its identity, and thanks to what it cares for most: the catalan language. From the decret de Nova Planta to the return of the Generalitat with the transition, through the various statutes it adopted, it managed to mobilize its power to claim and to be heard, even in the darkest ages of decadence or the sombre franco days. This voice often took the form of poetry songs, from the Catalan troubadours to the cantautors of the nova canco. The language survived interdiction, oblivion, contempt thanks to learned creators whenever it could benefit by their talent; when this was not possible, thanks to the people who kept it alive by continuously handing it over orally, mostly by singing, a strong point of popular culture. Until a new revival dawned with other poets breathing new inspiration. Catalan has become the official language again. But it must still fight and resist in front of the threat of domination by worldwide languages. Will this struggle ever end to enable catalan to become, as it longs to be, the language of the six million people living in catalonia ? Will it survive into the second millenium ? That is the question for languages that have no state

Texto completo da fonteThe objective of this PhD project was to understand the deployment and development of publishing houses since 1980 in the French regions and in Brittany and Alsace in particular. One of the principal hypotheses was that this was linked to the quest for recognition of cultural difference. The research results show that the action of publishers and the books in Alsace and in Brittany are linked to different social dynamics. In Brittany, publishers act following a logic of production, whereas in the Alsace, the renaissance of publishing in the 1980ies is based on a logic of reproduction. These publishers draw upon the continuity and heritage of XlXth century Alsatian publishing and refer also to the rich regional printing tradition since 1450. The study not only underlines transformations that occur in the publishing sector, but gives also deeper insides in the social changes on the local level. More generally, these two cases show that the return to the past and to the roots seems to prepare local and social imaginaries for the emergent transnational condition of society

Texto completo da fonteBy using the automobile as a social object, this thesis provides a threefold answer to the problem of the role of material consumption in social stratification. Thanks to the very original nature of automobile, we aim at address the question of the homogenization of lifestyles in contemporary France in three differents aspects : the phenomenons of social diffusion, the distribution of the characteristics of the automobile in social space and the repartition of the internal and external costs of the car. How can we characterize the diffusion of a good symbolic of mass consumption ? Which limits does this diffusion assume ? How are distributed the characteristics of the material goods in social space ?How do the differents costs of the automobile vary among social groups ? We adress theses questions by using secondary analysis of two series of suveys conducted by the French institute of statistics : the National Travel Surveys realized in 1981, 1993 and 2007 and the French Household Expenditure Surveys conducted in 1985, 1989, 1995, 2001 and 2006

Texto completo da fonteThis dissertation apprehends the identity processes and sociocultural changes taking place through the appropriation of rap music in Gabon since the end of the 80s, as well as the entanglement in power relations of those identity categories produced by young people, in the field of hierarchies between elders and youngers, of gender relations, of musical network stratifications, or towards the political authorities. An investigation in the archives of Gabon firstly highlights how, while marking ruptures with the previous generation, rappers were enrolled in the continuity of several decades of urban musical practices and transnational dialogues with some cultural productions circulating in the Atlantic space. A second part is devoted to the description of gender relations and to the construction of masculinity, revealing the agency developed by some women into the urban worlds of the night and of music. Finally, the third part focuses on rappers’ identity and ideological claims, and on the nationalisms they reinvent in negotiation between ethnic, national, transnational and panafrican levels. It deals with the transformations of witchcraft in rap music’s networks and in African world music market, with the spectacle of the nation and with transnational mobilities through which some rappers form new hybrid identity categories

Texto completo da fonte1880-1910 : three decades in which images, and especially photographic images, acquired great importance inpublic life and inspired an ambitious project in the German liberal bourgeoisie : this bourgeoisie wanted liberal society to construct an enlightened visual culture on the basis of associative life, its deliberative practices and educative ideals. The bourgeoisie encouraged the spread of photography through the formation of amateur clubs, publishing journals and organizing major exhibitions which were not by any means limited to art photography. The public space that emerged around photographic practices facilitated the creation of a common culture inpost-Bismarckian Germany. Why were amateurs, and not the press, industry or even cultural institutions, situated at the heart of this project? What were the political aims of these images in a country deeply marked by the militaristic propaganda and Welpolitik of Wilhelm II? What part did images, and especially photographs of the land and folklore, play in the construction of a nation identity "from below"?

Texto completo da fonteWhat do Don Quixote and Madame Bovary have in common? Indeed, they both believe themselves to be charactersfrom the novels they voraciously read. These examples, although heightened, highlight the novel’s ability to imposemodels of behaviour, to transform the reader’s personality, and in summary, to trigger a reconstruction of identity. In this thesis, I have set out to study this ability and to prove it through case studies of novels written in the firstdecade of the Republic of Turkey. The Ottoman model of society, based on religious affiliation, has collapsed andseveral currents of thought have been disputing for years a claim on the new identity of the Turks. They all convergein this period, between 1923 and 1933, under the rule of Mustafa Kemal, giving birth to a new form of identityreconstruction. Therefore, what role does the novel of this period play, especially as it has been dealing for decadeswith the social transformation of the country? In order to answer this question, I study the plots, recurring themesand characters of nearly eighty novels; I seek to determine the model(s) of society they defend and the linkconnecting them to the reality of the country. In addition, I analyse the symbolism of the places associated with theidentity referents at stake: Fatih, the traditional world, Beyoğlu, the Westernised Istanbul, and Anatolia, the sourceof national inspiration. The essay concludes with a study of the novel’s view on the social conditions of women, anindicator of the level of progress achieved by society, and of the female prototype that these novels encourage

Texto completo da fonteOur research work falls within the field of both translation studies and sociolinguistics. The sociolinguistic environment in which it is carried out is particularly characterized by a great diversity of languages that are unequal in terms of status and use. This study focuses on two languages, french and wolof, and covers the entire postcolonial period (from the independance in 1960 to now) during which the main concern of the different linguistic policies is about the promotion of the national languages. The aim is to study translation as a means that contributes to the recognition of of Senegalese languages and also as a tool that favours exchanges between these languages and French that represents the only official language of the country. This thesis attempts to show the important place of translation in restoring linguistic and socio-cultural balances and the role it plays and has to plays in the devolopment of national languages and their written literature. Therefore, we will put emphasis on the notions of tranfer and mediation between the languages and cultures that coexist. Finally, this study is based on a parallel corpus of legal and health texts translated from French to Wolof

Texto completo da fonteThis study calls for a historical and political science analysis of a classical category in anthropology, « joking relationships ». By focusing on joking relationships in Senegal it explores the fabrics of inter-community relations, the vernacular language of politics and the imagination of nationhood. It shows how the so-called pacifying function of joking relationships is questionable but also how these practices craft a culture of sociability and reveal the historicity of a common political culture in West Africa. The political instrumentalization of joking kinships in the context of the Casamance conflict in Senegal, and in some state-sponsored cultural nationalisms in West-Africa, are studied as neo-traditionalist endeavours that have succeeded in imposing this category in the public space and turning it into the cornerstone of national identities in the making

From the first years of colonization, culinary and eating practices have been one of the principal mechanisms of socialization and an important social marker that created fundamental identity referents. Three key moments allow us to observe cuisine-related transformations and their connection to changes in the political sphere. First, the affirmation of the colonial categories of « Indian » and « Spanish » through culinary practices and discourses; next, the reclaiming of foods native to the American continent and the emerging patriotism among Spanish descendents in the Americas; and finally, the invention of Mexican cuisine in the early 19th century in the context of constructing the Mexican nation

Memoirs of a conquest and pacification laborious, without means, which gives players who are willing to mobilize (missions, factories, companies, dealers) care to the city. Memoirs of a fragmented urban starts, reads still in the city and then continues in other forms with the policy of segregation creating black Brazzaville, and later, once independence was achieved, with the development progressive ethno-regional areas. Memories of great moments that make history and suggest a great destiny (capital of the AEF, France free of the Brazzaville conference, carefully orchestrated celebrations of. . . ) but also memories of the tragedies resulting from violence latent explodes suddenly left to destroy everything in civil wars, leaving some people a sense of abandonment and fate. Rebuilding the city, in the aftermath of these wars is first confrontation with this story, join in a truly urban project away from those who made up this city ignoring its identity and bolstering its inhabitants in a tradition of resistance. Is to understand the specificity of a complex colonial society that has survived in the urban setting and participated in the development of a hybrid city does not meet market rules. This is not to be locked in the ease of the great works and great expectations too modeled on a Western way of thinking, but to ensure that the urban project is finally the opportunity of a real communion between politics and city

This work examines the speech of nationalist military engineers. I take as a starting point the understanding that the nation, reaching as the default community of modern civilization in the last two centuries, boosted the scientific and technological development, taking the figure of military ahead in these advances. Military Engineering incorporates technical and intellectual elite, historically involved in building a modern and sovereign nation. I focus the Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME) and the institutions before it, which since the 19th century formed engineers and high level technicians in Brazil. I look at the perception of Brazilian nation revealed in the speeches of commanders and generals of this institution.

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis studies the Carnival of Salvador de Bahia (Brazil) and the Independence Day Festivities in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) in order to understand how different ways of celebrating give rise to political, economic, and cultural tensions in these two Latin American cities. This thesis argues that these festivities involve an antagonist relationship between an hegemonic form of celebration— associated with the practices and discourses of the urban elites— and other diverse, dissident, and often marginalized forms of participating. In this way, the carnival and festivities in Salvador and Cartagena are not only spaces of cultural encounter through symbols, dance, and music, but also political spaces in which identities, and racial and class relations are contested and reconfigured. Furthermore, these celebrations create an opportunity for different groups to raise harsh criticism to their own economic and political position in a broader urban context that is highly shaped by the global tourism industry and the interventions of the multicultural state

Texto completo da fonteThe aim of this study has been to understand the nature of the alliance that was forged at the beginning of the 20th century between an important fraction of French Catholics and the nationalist school formed by the Action française. If the very special historical circumstances at the beginning of the century--the Dreyfus affair, anticlericalism, the separation of church and state, the religious crisis over modernism (1907) and the condemnation of the sillon (1910)--explain the favor enjoyed by the Action française in church circles, it is also clear that the positivist and pagan doctrine of the movement's chief leader and ideologue, Charles Maurras, provided ample scope for criticism to its opponents. The latter exploited this vulnerability, which resulted, on January 29, 1914, in a first condemnation of seven works of Maurras by the congregation of the index. Pope Pius X approved and signed this condemnation, but he deemed it preferable to suspend its promulgation so as not to appear to lend support to adversaries of his pontificate. Twelve years later, in very different historical circumstances, marked by the course of events following the first world war, Pope Pius XI reviewed the whole case and concluded that it was imperative to issue a severe warming to French Catholics against the paganism of the principal leaders of the Action française. This warming was very badly received. Few bishops gave active support to the pope. The leaders of the Action française revolted (non possumus). .

Texto completo da fonteBetween 1890 and 1910, most prizes awarded in Spain by official art exhibits went to depictions of the hardships faced by the poorest subjects of the Restoration. Destitutes and vagrants, migrants and the unemployed, beggars and prostitutes, day laborers and poor peasants were the icons of a new repertoire of pictorial forms which not only superseded history painting but also proved immensely popular both with critics and the public. This thesis aims to write the history of this art of social destitution, by elucidating how it could triumph in the Salons of a Regime which was certainly not inclined to consider poverty as outrageous or as a legitimate political concern. This task has entailed melding two distinct historiographic traditions together: whereas the methods of art history were used to rediscover this body of work and explain why, shortly after having been officially sanctioned and showered with praise, it could be spurned by critics; those of cultural history were mustered to identify the different social constructs fashioned or promoted by these pieces. Moreover, the study of how these depictions of social destitution were perceived might help to determine how the feelings towards poverty evolved and what shared beliefs and preconceptions were used to legitimize inequality. By bringing these approaches together, this thesis hopes to offer the first synthetic study of a neglected chapter of Spanish, 19th century, cultural history
