Iracema is a Python library that aims to provide models for the extraction of meaningful informationfrom recordings of monophonic pieces of music, for purposes of research in music performance. With this objective in mind, we propose an architecture that will provide to users an abstraction level that simplifies the manipulation of different kinds of time series, as well as the extraction of segments from them. In this paper we: (1) introduce some key concepts at the core of the proposed architecture; (2) describe the current functionalities of the package; (3) give some examples of the application programming interface; and (4) give some brief examples of audio analysis using the system.

The organization of musical resources in a piece of music is opaque for everyone but for those with the highest levels of musical education. For the average listener, the specific vocabulary of musical organization is usually replaced by metaphorical language relating to inspiration and musical affect, or by a social perspective that rids the music of its specific theoretical language and provides a more relatable perspective of the music as a historical and communal event. We examine the ways in which information architecture and organizational theory can surface the inner workings of music in a relatable and approachable way. We consider music as a series of design resources that composers draw upon and organize according to a series of constraints that create a sense of musical structure to which the listener can relate. After a general introduction to the literature relating to constraints and creativity, we use two historical anecdotes that provide accessible demonstrations of how musicians in the seventeenth and twentieth centuries organized their musical resources both for their own compositional needs and for the purposes of didactic communication.

PurposeExtending documentation and analysis frameworks for acousmatic music to performance/interpretation, from an information science point of view, will benefit the transmission and preservation of a repertoire with an idiosyncratic relation to performance and technology. The purpose of this paper is to present the outcome of a qualitative research aiming at providing a conceptual model theorizing the intricate relationships between the multiple dimensions of acousmatic music interpretation.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology relies on the grounded theory. A total of 12 Interviews were conducted over a period of three years in France, Québec and Belgium, grounded in theoretical sampling.FindingsThe analysis outcome describes eight dimensions in acousmatic performance, namely, musical, technical, anthropological, psychological, social, cultural, linguistic and ontological. Discourse profiles are provided in relation to each participant. Theory development led to the distinction between documentation of interpretation as an expertise and as a profession.Research limitations/implicationsData collection is limited to French-speaking experts, for historical and methodological reasons.Practical implicationsThe model stemming from the analysis provides a framework for documentation which will benefit practitioners and organizations dedicated to the dissemination of acousmatic music. The model also provides this community with a tool for characterizing expert discourses about acousmatic performance and identifying content areas to further investigate. From a research point of view, the theorization leads to the specification of new directions and the identification of relevant epistemological frameworks.Originality/valueThis research brings a new vision of acousmatic interpretation, extending the literature on this repertoire’s performance with a more holistic perspective.

The more complex our cities become, the more difficult it is for designers to use traditional tools for understanding and analyzing the inner essence of an eco-system such as the contemporary urban environment. Even many of the recently crafted digital tools fail to address the necessity for a more holistic design approach which captures the virtual and the physical, the immaterial and the material. Handling of massive chunks of information and classification and assessment of diverse data are nowadays more crucial than ever before. We see a significant potential in combining the fields of composition in music and architecture through the use of information technology. Merging the two fields has the intense potential to release new, innovative tools for urban designers. This article describes an innovative tool developed at the Technical University of Crete, through which an urban designer can work on the music transcription of a specific urban environment applying music compositional rules and filters in order to identify discordant entities, highlight imbalanced parts, and make design corrections. Our cities can be tuned.

Music, it has been shown, has the potential to both create social cohesion and encourage conflict resolution (Koelsch, Offermanns, & Franzke, 2010). In a city with deep roots in slavery, music may be more powerful than language or the toppling of monuments to help create a cultural identity that every demographic can fit. Not only can music improve mood in an individual, but musical contagion affects large groups at once. Creating a space to equalize access to and share the experience of music—both making and appreciation—would give the city an opportunity for reconciliation and community bonding. While a universal quality of humanity, music is unfortunately not equally accessible to all races and ages. Children in low socioeconomic schools and aging adults are two populations that are less likely to engage in musical opportunities due to prohibitive costs, lack of resources, diminished support, reduced funding, insufficient skills for participating in organized groups, and no access to spaces for playing (Deisler, 2011; Hallam, Creech, Varvarigou, & McQueen, 2012). A public music library could remove many of the prohibitive factors for marginalized populations outlined in prior research. To ensure that these populations are being served, a team of community members who lead a bi-weekly music-workshops for musicians of any age or level will be interviewed. Literature reviews of acoustics and spatial organization will help to inform design choices and practical considerations. Researching methods to reduce attrition in musical settings as well as projects that have successfully encouraged community engagement will be important aspects for design development. Determining and analyzing case studies via research and site visits will reveal tested solutions and offer feedback for how to improve upon existing examples. Touring the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts would be useful, and an application for funding will be submitted for traveling to New York. In an independent study class, design details specific to music libraries are being investigated with the assistance of an internationally recognized library design firm, which in turn is applying this research into current projects utilizing similar acoustical and storage needs. To address the imbalance in musical engagement, the space will accommodate renting instruments, checking-out scores, listening to audio recordings, and collaborating with other musicians. There will be practice studios available for use by individuals and ensembles, stacks, a café and lounge space to encourage leisure, and a community concert hall for performances. Music is a shared human experience, and access to learning and creating music should be accessible to all.

The Lord of the Rings, which had a significant impact all over the world, attracted great attention both by literary assemblies and by the written and visual media. The Lord of the Rings, a literary adaptation about which a lot has been written, has become a matter of world public opinion. The interest first started with the curiosity of marginal youth circles, then gradually formed the agenda of all mainstream literature, before and after adaptations, film, film music, inspirational music albums, computer games, and philosophy that occupied the whole world for many years. In the article, inferences will be made by focusing on the architectural references and perceptions of this artistic phenomenon.

The author of The Lord of the Rings novels is a respected Oxford professor, J. R. R. Tolkien. The books were also published while the author was alive and compiled interest. However, towards the end of the 20th century, that is, long after the death of the author, the prestige, fame, and interest he had reached an unbelievable level. Almost all over the world, a Lord of the Rings and Middle-earth fashion has emerged. This extraordinary interest was quick to attract the attention of Hollywood. Thus, under the leadership of Peter Jackson, inhabiting the unspoiled nature of New Zealand, perhaps the most comprehensive film plateau in history was established to revive Tolkien's fantastic universe. And this plateau was used throughout the trilogy and even later for film sequels like The Hobbit.

The reason behind the stories of The Lord of the Rings and Middle-earth having attracted so much attention years later and having received so much interest from almost all of humanity is that they have a highly indirect and sophisticated architectural perception, an understanding of space, and a philosophy of life. While filming the places that are told by Tolkien in this story, Peter Jackson also succeeded in splendidly recreating the places and making us see the malicious messages as well as giving beautiful references to architecture.

Tolkien set out with his vision of a holistic and fantastic space called Middle-earth in The Lord of the Rings series, and with his metaphors, he gave us unique philosophical ideas about the ways, methods, and models in which people's perceptions and choices of life would lead them. Peter Jackson, on the other hand, adapted this work to the cinema with great success in the famous Lord of the Rings trilogy and gave competent new inspirations about both the perception of space and the understanding of life.

Holistic Architecture for Music Education (HAME) arises as a Design-Based Research, that is, it is an interdisciplinary research approach based on mixed research methods, which attempts understanding empirical phenomena from music education complexity. The HAME’ structural design poses a preliminary study of phenomena, the formulation of a research hypothesis, fieldwork in real-world situations and, finally, an analysis of data collected during the fieldwork with the intention of contrasting the hypothesis. This study aims to explore the technical suitability of the HAME in music education’s empirical research. Results demonstrate consistency between four phases of the structural design, in addition to prove the empirical complexity of organisational structures in music classrooms. In conclusion, the HAME is understood as an interdisciplinary educational research approach, which is holistically described as it connects theoretical currents of the social sciences and humanities with actual educational situations of music education. As a consequence, the HAME provides theoretical and practical knowledge about music education.

Bendigo, where the traditional owners are the Dja Dja Wurrung people, has capitalised on its European historical roots. Its striking architecture owes much to its Gold Rush past which has also given it a diverse cultural heritage. The creative industries, while not well recognised as such, contribute well to the local economy. The many festivals, museums and library exhibitions attract visitors from the metropolitan centre of Victoria especially. The Bendigo Creative Industries Hub was a local council initiative while the Ulumbarra Theatre is located within the City’s 1860’s Sandhurst Gaol. Many festivals keep the city culturally active and are supported by organisations such as Bendigo Bank. The Bendigo Writers Festival, the Bendigo Queer Film Festival, The Bendigo Invention & Innovation Festival, Groovin the Moo and the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival are well established within the community. A regional accelerator and Tech School at La Trobe University are touted as models for other regional Victorian cities. The city has a range of high quality design agencies, while the software and digital content sector is growing with embeddeds working in agriculture and information management systems. Employment in Film, TV and Radio and Visual Arts has remained steady in Bendigo for a decade while the Music and Performing Arts sector grew quite well over the same period.
