Resumo:
Human impact has led to degradation of different marine ecosystems, especially coastal, estuary and river environments, causing the decline of many marine fish populations. Among elasmobranchs one of the most threatened ones are sawfishes (Chondrichthyes, Pristidae), resulting extinct in many coastal areas around the world. In the Mediterranean Sea they occurred with two species, Pristis pristis and P. pectinata, until the second half of the last century. To better understand the baselines and the past distribution of sawfish populations, historical rostra available in the museum collections demonstrated to be value resource. This study aimed to identify new short genetic markers and a new functional amplification protocol suitable for the specific identification of ancient sawfish’s finds. A total of 78 rostra specimens, dated 1700-1900 and catalogued as unknown or Mediterranean origin, were collected from 10 European museums and were properly prepared for ancient DNA genetic analysis. Small fragments (118-266bp) of the mitochondrial COI and the NADH2 genes resulted to be useful for the taxonomic identification of 69 rostra at the species level. All the analyses computed in this study, NJ tree reconstruction, Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery, Characteristic Attribute analysis and P-distance computed between species, showed in full concordance the identification of four sawfish species: P. pristis, P. zijsron, P. pectinata and Anoxypristis cuspidata. A high frequency of mismatches was found between molecular identification and species museum cataloguing, especially between P. pectinata and P. zijsron (72%). Specimens were identified mostly as P. zijsron, even among Mediterranean samples and the presence of two sequence sub-clusters was highlighted in this poorly barcoded species. In conclusion, this new knowledge requires further investigations on the structure of sawfish populations and on their evolutionary dynamics to identify a suitable conservation policy.

This thesis has two aims equally significant: firstly to explore the potential of an instructional approach for developing museum-school partnerships that would empower the multiliteracies experiences of diverse students; second to reveal the fine details of the performances deriving from these experiences. The focus is on the experiences of 4 schoolteachers, 2 museum educators and 36 primary students aged 10-12 years old in the island of Cyprus. The conceptual backdrop draws from the field of New Literacy Studies, the proposed Museum Multiliteracies Practice (MMP) framework derived from the multiliteracies pedagogy of the New London Group, the Learning by Design Model adapted from Cope and Kalantzis and Schwartz’s museum based pedagogy. A design-based research (DBR) methodology was utilised to undertake the research using both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and analysis. The research unfolded in three phases: the preliminary stage, the prototyping stage and the assessment stage. The thesis presents the design, enactment and evaluation of the Living Museum Partnership (LMP), a programme unfolded in 13 weeks for the construction of a student-generated virtual museum to support environmental education curriculum. The study contributes to an underexplored area of theory, research and practice towards fulfilling the vision of designing, implementing and evaluating museum-school partnerships for the 21st-century. Also, the research contributes to a growing field of study on theory-based museum learning practice that draws on inclusive pedagogies, in particular for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Finally, the research contributes to developing multimodal tools for empirical research. Findings from classroom observations as a participant observer and action researcher as the museum educator implementing the programme, semi-structured and focus group interviews, and questionnaires indicated that the LMP unfolded in an effective manner. Students’ repertoires of literacy were enhanced as they engaged in the learning process as active designers and multimodal learners.

This essay researches institutional diversity in the unlikely combination of institution and feminist organization, Museum Anna Nordlander (MAN), a contemporary art museum with a gender and identity focus in Skellefteå, Sweden. Using mostly theories presented in Sara Ahmed’s work, On Being Included: Racism and Diversity in Institutional Life from 2012, this essay examines the museum’s preconditions for successful diversity work, how diversity is understood and made, and, finally, how diversity is expressed in its exhibitions. The essay finds that the museum’s biggest challenges to successful diversity work lie in the insufficient diversity displayed in its exhibitions and the homogenous internal representation, and that the key might lie in the selection process.

This study investigates the practices of four museums in two countries in relation to the notion of social inclusion and how their museum professionals reflect about the topic. The aim is to provide an empirical grounding of Sandell’s theory about the three levels of impact within which museums can address social exclusion: with individuals, specific communities and wider society. The practices of four museums will be analysed and discussed: Västmanlands läns museum and Västerås Konstmuseum in Västerås, Sweden and Musei Civici and Fondazione Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia, Italy. To answer the research questions, nine qualitative semi-structured interviews were performed. The informants selected are museum professionals responsible for different public practices at their institutions. The interviews were taped and at a later stage transcribed. Additionally, documentation from different sources completes the empirical data. A qualitative analysis has been employed to analyse the data. Text analysis and thematic analysis were selected to scrutinize the data. I employed the deductive method to trace Sandell’s theory on the data. The findings show that the notion of social inclusion is a subjective concept. Nonetheless, all the informants’ ideas of social inclusion are consistent with Sandell’s definition. The practices enhanced by the museums to address social inclusion are different in nature but mirror the understanding of the concept expressed by the museum professionals and it is in line with Sandell's model. Therefore, his theory about the three levels of impact that museums can achieve implementing inclusive practices is verified by the empirical data. Moreover, my hypothesis about the link between the social inclusion enact by museums and the socio-cultural context is proved too. This is a two years master's thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.
Intervjuerna spelades in och transkriberades sedan.

How many museums are there in the world? Based on a numerical approach to the museum world, this question raises a number of issues about what museums represent, how they develop, and the knowledge and understanding we have of them. However, museums do not benefit from a satisfactory quantitative approach, and no research to date has addressed the issues involved in the construction and significance of these figures for a representation of the museum phenomenon. This work develops as the successive opening of several black boxes, exploring in turn the issues of the definition of the museum, the methods of census and observation, and the means of expressing its diversity. It is based in particular on fieldwork devoted to census strategies around museums in France, questioning the possibility of differentiated museum landscapes and perimeters and raising a constitutive tension between recognition and invisibilisation. This reflection is related to the challenges of European statistics in the formation of a Europe of museums, based on the analysis of its actors and their productions. Finally, the debates led by ICOM around the definition proposed in 2019 at the Kyoto Conference highlight the creation of an international consensus, confronted with specific visions of museums around the world. In this way, I hope to bring to light the dynamics of the structures of information systems dedicated to the museum, to objectify the different visions of the museum throughout the world, and to initiate new methods that can contribute to the development of museology

Our work concerns systems that help users during museum visits and access to cultural heritage. Our goal is to design recommender systems, implemented in mobile devices to improve the experience of the visitor, by recommending him the most relevant items and helping him to personalize the tour he makes. We consider two mainly domains of application : museum visits and tourism. We propose a context-aware hybrid recommender system which uses three different methods : demographic, semantic and collaborative. Every method is adapted to a specific step of the museum tour. First, the demographic approach is used to solve the problem of the cold start. The semantic approach is then activated to recommend to the user artworks that are semantically related to those that the user appreciated. Finally, the collaborative approach is used to recommend to the user artworks that users with similar preferences have appreciated. We used a contextual post filtering to generate personalized museum routes depending on artworks which were recommended and contextual information of the user namely : the physical environment, the location as well as the duration of the visit. In the tourism field, the items to be recommended can be of various types (monuments, parks, museums, etc.). Because of the heterogeneous nature of these points of interest, we proposed a composite recommender system. Every recommendation is a list of points of interest that are organized in a package, where each package may constitute a tour for the user. The objective is to recommend the Top-k packages among those who satisfy the constraints of the user (time, cost, etc.). We define a scoring function which estimates the quality of a package according to three criteria : the estimated appreciation of the user, the popularity of points of interest as well as the diversity of packages. We propose an algorithm inspired by composite retrieval to build the list of recommended packages. The experimental evaluation of the system we proposed using a real world data set crawled from Tripadvisor demonstrates its quality and its ability to improve both the relevance and the diversity of recommendations

This essay studies the Swedish museum debate during 2016–2017, regarding the display of history. The sources analysed here that represent the debate are the Swedish Govenment’s Proposition on Cultural Heritage Politics (Regeringens proposition 2016/17:116), the Museum Investigation (Ny Museipolitik 2015) and articles from Swedish daily newspapers. The essay uses Laurajane Smith’s work (Uses of Heritage 2006) on Authorized and Subaltern Heritage Discourses, as well as methods for argument analysis and construction of the Heritage node. The essay concludes that the Government’s Proposition is more closely tied to a Subaltern Heritage Discourse, while the Investigation lies somewhere in between both discourses, and the newspaper articles adhere to an Authorized Heritage Discourse. The Proposition construct the Heritage node in an open, multiculturalistic way that also focus on relevancy for today’s society and stresses the importance of the experience of the visit. The Investigation focus on the special role of the museum professionals, and also believes in a balance between traditional knowledge-based exhibitions and experience-based ones. The authors of the articles see the heritage as under threat from Government Politics, where knowledge and tradition is being replaced by norm criticism and multiculturalism.

In politics nothing seems possible without the mobilisation of a collective imagination. With the declaration of many countries of their multicultural character during the second half of the twentieth century, along with a wave of patrimonialization of new common multicultural referents, museums gradually integrated this discourse in their exhibitions and collections. This will especially be the case of the Ethnological Museums, created in the context of Modernity and resulting in the consolidation of Anthropology, the science of "the others". These museums integrated more than any other institutions that reflection in which they were supposed to play an important role through the implementation of new practices. As such, while they were plunged into a deep crisis in the years 1960-1970, this integration of multiculturalism in Europe begat the renovation of most of them between 2000 and 2010, through huge museum projects that aimed at boasting the modernity of cities and countries in which they were created, seen as open to the world and its cultural differences. From an anthropological conception of the museum as symbolically and culturally constructed having social effects on the conceptualization of the world, this thesis discusses the integration of multiculturalism in European ethnological museums focusing on its museological effects and on the development of their collections policies. This thesis is therefore based on a methodological approach composed of a double phase. The first consists of a deep bibliographic research, which established a quadruple theoretical framework while the second phase consists of a double empirical field research phase based on observation and a series of interviews, firstly in a large number of European museums and, secondly, an in- depth research in three national museums with clear and differentiated characteristics in terms of multicultural reflection.

This study establishes a comparative analysis between three museums with ethnographic collections: two of these museums are in the international museum scene (Museum of World Culture, in Gothenburg, and the World Museum Liverpool) and one museum in Lisbon, the National Museum of Ethnology. With globalization, multiculturalism and the preservation of cultural diversity represents new challenges for museums, especially ethnographic museums. It’s not just about knowing the “other”, which is at the center of traditional museums, it’s about a new perspective about diversity, which is being developed in our societies with the immigrant communities, meaning that the “other” is now part of “us”. Taking in consideration the emerging of new paradigms, this study reflects on the contemporary challenges of a more representative, inclusive and participatory museology. This research revealed that in spite of the differences between the case studies, the three museums recognized that their role is challenged by sociodemographic changes within the societies they operate, however different perspectives are developed.

The present study aimed, from the theoretical reflections on education and museum education, investigate the performance of the educational Afro Brazil Museum along to school groups scheduled for guided tours. With the purpose of acting for the recognition of African and Afro-descendant population as social subjects in Brazilian culture, taking them the stigma of slavery and valuing their ways of being and doing, the Afro Brazil Museum would be assuming the role of combating ethnic racial discrimination, seeking its visitors aware of the importance of African influence in the construction of Brazilian nationality. Therefore it was defined the research problem: the educational action of the Afro Brazil Museum fight ethnic racial discrimination through heritage education? Adopting the procedure ethnographic and empirical observation of guided visits, it was found not to confirm the initial hypothesis, which held that the Afro Brazil Museum hold a heritage education in the sense of celebrate the history of blacks in Brazil and Africa through the narrative perspective inaugurated by von Martius on the participation of the three races (white, black and indigenous) in the construction of Brazil. Among the results obtained from the research we observed characteristics of educational action that can be considered as a factor in teaching and learning, but not heritage education. On the other hand, there is concern in teaching students to read the exhibits and to recognize the African influence in Brazilian culture. It was also the discontinuity of visits, which involves not only the museum, but mostly the school in the preparation and finalization of the visit, this activity could modify the quality of education held at the museum.

ABSTRACT: Recalling the UNESCO's work towards the protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), in particular the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage adopted in 2003, I took this opportunity to reflect upon the implications that this recognition brings to museums. The overwhelming success of this document has raised the importance of ICH at international level, motivating a growing number of initiatives towards its safeguard. Accordingly, to the 2003 Convention, there are many agents involved in the preservation of this heritage, yet the International Council of Museums (ICOM) recognizes a central role for museums. Nevertheless, to face this challenge, museums will have to rethink their relationship with ICH in opposition to their deep rooted tradition in material culture. The present study reflects upon the possibilities that museums have to answer the changeling 2003 Convention, recognizing that it’s possible through museum activities to find ways to study and give visibility to ICH. According to each museum specificities, it seems clear that strategies can be engaged in order to promote the safeguard of ICH, including inventory and documentation (audiovisual, audio, text and image), research, promotion through exhibitions, publications, dissemination trough internet and other means, informal education, among other activities. Many museums have already started exploring integrated approaches towards the safeguard of ICH and some of these examples are presented in this study. This theme is challenging, implying innovative museum practices which reflect on museums role towards the promotion of cultural diversity and creativity.

The aim with this study is to shed light on the relationship between ideals and practises at the National Museum of Finland (the NMF) and at the Swedish History Museum (the SHM). The focus is on the museums’ role in society regarding integration and cultural diversity. In order to fulfil this aim, I have studied the two museums’ pedagogical programmes for immigrants learning Finnish or Swedish. Through an ethnographic field study (including interviews and observations) and text analysis, I have studied ideals and practices connected to these programmes. My hypothesis is that intercultural dialogue opens up for museums to combine aims concerning cultural diversity with aims of supporting integration. My study shows that there is a problematic relationship between cultural diversity and integration within the ideals and practices at the two museums. At the SHM, the staff’s aims of supporting integration as a mutual process are contradictory to that they are toning down the importance of mutual learning to the programme. At the NMF, the approach to communication within ideals and practices and the shortage of dialogue within the programme makes it difficult to fulfil the aim of representing a diverse society. At both museums, intercultural dialogue is seen as something very positive when it occurs at the learning sessions. It is, however, rather seen as a bonus than as an aim within today’s versions of the pedagogical programmes. This master thesis is written within a two years master programme in Archive, Library and Museum Studies.

This research was designed to explore the ways that Muslim schools are dealing with the tensions arising from the diversity presented to them within their own religious group and how this then shapes individual schools as they operate within a post 9/11 and 7/7 social context. The work was carried out in six case study schools located within four different geographical contexts in England. Giddens’ notion of “double hermeneutics” informed the theoretical and conceptual frameworks driving the research in its aim to analyse the relationships between structure and agency operating within these schools and to understand them as social phenomena. To a lesser extent, these frameworks were also influenced by Gadamer’s interpretation of the “practical wisdom” concept which is used as a conceptual tool for data analysis. In setting out to provide a nuanced picture of these schools and explore their trajectories, four traditional theoretical typologies of Islamic education underpinned the analysis. These typologies were identified as important in understanding the dilemmas presented to Muslim schools in constructing themselves as “academically successful institutions” without compromising on their “Islamic ethos”. More so, as these schools deal with the tensions arising from maintaining an Islamic ethos while competing in an era where consumerist parental attitudes and academic achievement in the league tables are important to their future. The critical question that these schools’ leaders are facing is: How can the right balance be struck between “Islamic ethos” and the market dynamics of quality schooling? In resolving this dilemma, the concept of “what constitutes being a good/practising Muslim” was found to be key to how the case study schools managed this balance. This thesis argues that Muslim schools in Britain are being diversified by a continuously changing process that is shaped by internal factors as they try to balance the everyday dilemmas presented to them with the external factors that impact on them as they compete and operate within a wider educational context. As they grow in experience and confidence in their educational achievements Muslim schools are less influenced by “imported” factors. This then frees them to work on “tailoring” the education they offer more specifically to their own needs and challenges while taking into account and balancing this with their wider British influences. This has implications for those social debates such as multiculturalism, inclusion and exclusion and community cohesion that are now necessarily being influenced by a late modern social context.

Resumo:
Three questions command even greater attention today, as over forty countries, including many Muslim-majority states, unite against Daesh (the so-called ‘Islamic State'): How do Muslims relate to the Muslim ‘other'? How do Muslims relate to the religious ‘other'? What role can Muslim religious education play in fostering peace? Islam and Muslim education are suspected of promoting intolerance. This thesis investigates a group of Shia Ismaili Muslim trainee-teachers' attitudes to plurality in their religious education programme. The Secondary Teacher Education Programme (STEP) is a two-year postgraduate course of the Ismaili Muslim community to train religious education teachers. STEP, a novel development in Muslim education, experiments with an innovative pedagogical approach to plurality. The research spanning over three years involved in-depth interviews, focus group, observations and textual analysis. 21 trainee-teachers from 13 different countries participated in the study. Alan Race's (1983) typology ‘inclusivismexclusivism- pluralism' serves as a key theoretical lens through which to examine attitudes to religious others. The thesis argues that a ‘rooted religious pluralisation' is taking place in the Ismaili community facilitating the emergence of the ‘tradition' of pluralism in the community. The study shows that initially, the participants were inclusive of other religious communities and worldviews on ‘theological', ‘humanistic' and ‘instrumental' grounds, but were selective about how they embraced it. Many of them believed that their religious perspective exceptionally equipped them over their religious ‘other'. Gradually, STEP's ‘civilizational, normative and humanistic' approach cultivated an ‘academically informed pluralism' in most trainee-teachers. It strengthened their Ismaili Muslim identity on the one hand and generated an appreciation for diversity on the other. The individuals developed not only greater socio-cultural and historical awareness of religion, but also their ability to make a space for faith academically. It cultivated in the participants a degree of ‘inter-tradition competence' and ‘intra-Islam competence'. The individuals were not ‘pluralist angels', but they discursively participated in pluralism. The present study makes three key contributions. Firstly, this is the first study to propose the thesis of ‘rooted religious pluralisation'. It identifies the key features and tendencies inherent in a religious community's engagement with diversity through a five-dimensional working framework. Moreover, as a study of the socio-cultural process of ‘intra-faith pluralisation' in Muslim religious education setting, it is unique. It is about making sense of the everyday experiences of the Muslims who encounter diversity within their own faith. The thesis identifies various stages involved in the process of developing intra-faith competence and provides tools and vocabulary to discuss them meaningfully. Moreover, the study suggests the possibility of a Muslim education that can play a vital role in combating extremism and sectarianism. Current scholarship does not sufficiently take account of new and thought-provoking pedagogical developments in Muslim education. There is a dearth of studies on Muslim faith communities' efforts to build ‘intra-Islam competency' in their followers through faith-based education. The literature is also silent about how Ismaili Muslims handle differences among themselves regarding matters of faith, how they view differences within Islam and relate to wider religious plurality. Thus, the study contributes to a niche in the existing literature on religious pluralism.

This thesis explores the desirability of Australia???s State museums to be inclusive of diverse cultures. In keeping with a cultural studies approach, and a commitment to social action, emphasis is placed upon enhancing the ability of State museums to fulfil obligations and expectations imposed upon them as modern collecting institutions in a culturally diverse nation. By relating the desirability and ability of State museums to attaining social justice in a multicultural Australia through broadening the concept of Australia???s heritage, the thesis is firmly situated within post-colonial discourse. The thesis analyses State multicultural, heritage, and museum legislation, in New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, with regard to State museums as agents of cultural policy. Results from a survey, Greeks and Museums, conducted amongst Australia???s Greeks in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, reveal an anomaly between their museum-going habits and the perception of those habits as expressed by government policies promoting the inclusion of Australians of a non-English speaking background in the nation???s cultural programmes. In exploring the issue of inclusiveness, the thesis highlights the need for cultural institutions to shift the emphasis away from audience development, towards greater audience participation. The thesis outlines an initiative-derived Queensland Model for establishing an inclusive relationship between museums and communities, resulting in permanent, affordable, and authoritative collections, while simultaneously improving the museums??? international reputation and networking capabilities. By using the example of one of the nation???s non-indigenous communities, and drawing upon material obtained through the survey, and a catalogue containing photographs and lists of Greek textile collections found in the Powerhouse Museum (MAAS), Sydney, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Immigration Museum, Melbourne, the Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Museum, Brisbane, as well as collections owned by private individuals, the thesis focuses on the role played by museums in constructing social cohesion and inclusiveness.

Resumo:
The cultural determinism summoned in the discourse on the ‘war on terror’ embraces gender frames that invigorate the Islam and the West divide. In a vacuum of historical, geo-political and economic contexts, such frames conjure a Muslim woman archetype in opposition to Western conceptualizations of modernity. Ignoring the social milieu, as well as the current global transformations affecting people’s lives globally, conjectures in singular co-optations that isolate traits from religious dispositions have implications in how Muslim gender issues are perceived and addressed. This thesis intends to reconceptualize the Muslim woman image in an attempt to move beyond the gender polemics of cultural determinism and divide. Using narrative enquiry, the study makes a comparative analysis to discover how Muslim women in two disparate societies – Australia and Kenya are responding to the dynamics of change accelerated by globalization. Through primary research, it captures the narratives of 40 women along the axis of the two major influences on their lives - modernization and Islamization enhanced by globalization. In tracing the way global paradigms and policy changes at the macro-level have affected Muslim women and the responses produced, it provides an unconventional frame to view the lives of contemporary Muslim women. The study contends that in general, the issues facing Muslim women in the rapidly changing environment can be understood as challenges internal and external to faith orientation. On the one hand, the forces of a modern global culture offer opportunities and channels to redefine aspects of daily living and lifestyles. On the other, a resurgence of Islam manifests itself in an assertion of religious observance, cultural identity, values and morality that increasingly question these settings. The challenges are not confined to minorities in the West, but also borne by many in non-Western societies. Through its research findings, the study proposes that culture in itself is not immutable or a constant, but cultural expression is a vital part of utilizing opportunities availed by development and central to the process of development itself. As the means of comprehension without which life, lifestyles, objectives, aspirations and much more cannot be expressed, given meaning or be implemented, cultural expression is a vital aspect of human development. Accommodating these in the multicultural settings of contemporary environments is evermore salient in the globalized world. As the world becomes more interdependent, the challenges for a global society manifest in how societies organize themselves; how citizens participate and how decisions on collective issues can be more congruent to facilitate a more socially sustainable development. Through its schedule, the study attempts to provide an insight into the issues and challenges facing Muslim women in contemporary times and in the course of its findings makes a case for the value of diversity, cultural expression and a sustained representation of Muslim women within development issues.

There is an abundance of research concerning diversity issues in American classrooms. However, researchers have not provided enough attention to religious goals of Muslim parents and their experiences with educational institutions. For this qualitative study, the researcher interviewed 15 Muslim parents, eight females and seven males, to explore how participants’ experiences and expectations influence the way they negotiate their religious needs with schools/preschool in Southern California. The results showed that cooperation and negotiations were key strategies adopted by Muslim parents to maintain relationships with educational organizations. Schools accommodated religious practices when requested and parents negotiated their needs when necessary. Findings also showed that participants connected the school’s role with academic learning and that teachers lacked accurate knowledge of Islam. There was a sense of restraint among participants. Participants did not want to share the name of their child’s school/preschool or materials shared by the school.

This thesis offers a critical historical analysis of the discourses on sexual and gender diversity related to international human rights law and Islamic law, as well as an ethnographic account of contemporary Muslims in Lahore, Pakistan whose pluralist sexual and gender experience defies the punitive gaze of state law. The central hypothesis of this project is that critical - and parallel - examinations of the legal, social and political genealogies of human rights law and the Islamic legal tradition, as they relate to human sexual and gender difference, can reveal some salient patterns of insurrectionary vernacular discursive practices. It is, moreover, posited that sexually diverse and gender-variant Muslims already engage in such practices, which help them to negotiate their legal, political and social positions. The ethnographic part of this thesis, then, documents and interrogates those practices, while the concomitantly pursued historical analysis provides a broader background for understanding their invaluable role. Thereby compiled and recounted, a history - of sexual and gender plurality amidst the umma (1) past and present - is always already in the making. Whilst its roots - and rites run deep into the idiosyncratic forms of Muslim sociality, that narrative is now increasingly seen as a part of larger human rights and sexual/gender reforms. This thesis, thus, also endeavours to contextualise and historicise the treatment of sexual/gender diversity in international law- epitomised in the (legal) ascendance of the notions of sexual orientation and gender identity - by retracing, inter alia, the making of the sexual and gendered subject of Christian and European law. Ultimately, this thesis is an interdisciplinary account of Muslim sexual and gender diversity, and of the attempts of historical and contemporary legal systems at its regulation.

Mazama bororo was recently described in 1996 and is considered the most threatened species of Brazilian deer. Due to this, basic aspects of its biology are still unknown. Thus, this research project aims to use DNA extracted from recent specimens and from natural history collections to review the taxonomy, to describe historical distribution and to investigate the existence of phylogeographic patterns on M. bororo. For this purpose, we extracted DNA from 200 samples of turbinate bones obtained from natural history collections and 78 of these were identified from cytochrome b initiator (224bp). We obtained a total of 22 specimens identified as M. bororo. This result allowed identify unpublished areas on historical and perhaps current distribution of M. bororo in states such as Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Espírito Santo and Bahia. Moreover, the comparison among the DNA from holotype of M. bororo and Mazama americana jucunda indicates that M. bororo corresponds to the subspecies M. americana jucunda, described in 1913, highlighting the need to raise this subspecies to full species status. Our results also demonstrates that M. bororo did not show a genetic structuration of their populations and that their genetic diversity is lower than other species, highlighting the need to increase conservation and environment policy efforts to maintenance of this species. Finally, when we compare the morphological identification available on natural history collections with the identification obtained from molecular markers we found that the error rate resulting from the classification based on morphological characters was 26%. Nevertheless, we expect with the help of DNA from natural history collections will be possible to select non-convergent morphological characters for this group, allowing thus correct morphological identifications.

What are grassroots “Canadian Muslims” and why not use the descriptor “Muslims in Canada”? This thesis examines the novel concept of locale specific grassroots Canadian Muslim identity of second and 1.5 generation Muslims in the prairie city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The project focuses on a generation of Muslims that are settled, embedded, and active in a medium sized Canadian metropolis. Locale plays a powerful part in the way people navigate identities, form attachments, find belonging, and negotiate communities and society. In order to explore this unique identity a case study was conducted in Winnipeg. Interviews with 1.5 and second generation Muslims explored the experience of grassroots Canadian Muslim identity. The project does not focus on religious doxy or praxis but rather tries to understand a lived Canadian Muslim identity by exploring discourse and space as well as strategies, social perceptions and expectations. Participant observation, community resources and literature also aid in the understanding of the grassroots Canadian Muslim experience. This study found that the attachments, networks, and experiences in the locale give room for an embedded Canadian Muslim experience and more negotiable identities than most studies on Muslims in Canada describe. These individuals are not foreigners living in Canada. Their worldviews develop out of this particular and embedded grassroots experience. They navigate a new kind of hybrid Canadian Muslim identity that is unique and flexible. This is the Canadian Muslim experience of 2nd and 1.5 generation Winnipeg Muslims.

Interest in Muslim and Arab societies has been on the rise in South Korea, especially since 2001, with many books and various documentaries being published on the subject. Since 2005 there have been a number of television shows and documentaries that include Muslim, and sometimes Arab characters. This study will examine how images of Muslims and Arabs are presented in Korean popular culture through the analysis of various dramas and variety shows, as well as how these images fit into the context of Korean ethno-nationalism and the history of Islam in East Asia. In addition to this analysis this study will also be exploring how these images have been changing from negative to a more sympathetic or realistic depiction of Muslims and Arabs, as well as explore which groups are responsible for this change.

This thesis examines the genesis of the National Museums Policy in Brazil in the 2000s. The Brazilian model consolidated memory spaces as objects of public policy and served as a starting point for the development of similar initiatives elsewhere in South America, influenced by the theories of social museology. In order to explain the emergence of this museum policy, which encompassed all state actions towards museums and their collections, this research analyzes a combination of political, social, and cultural factors in the light of the cognitive approach. It draws on data from interviews with policy makers and members of the museum community, and analysis of primary and secondary sources related to the activities of national institutions of museum management, including speeches, legislation, and strategic plans. This thesis demonstrates that efforts towards the development of local solutions to memorial governance – under the influence of the movement of the "new museology," and as part of the rise of a process of recognition of cultural diversity – found its place on the political agenda due to a change of administration that led to the country’s first leftist government. The museum policy marked a major symbolic resignification of memorial discourses and practices in Brazil, and served as a means to legitimate the new government, which had been elected on a platform of democratizing public structures in the name of "social justice"

The following paper represents the internship report corresponding to the Master Degree in Municipal Cultural Policy of The Faculty of Letters of University of Coimbra developed, between December 2016 and May 2017, on Coimbra’s Municipal Museum. This internship report integrates within a socially responsible museology and aims to contribute to a more inclusive, representative and participative practice in the Municipal Museum. Sustained by a theory-based work and research on the social role of a museum and its responsibility on nowadays important matters, the main goal is to bring awareness to significant subjects such as multiculturalism and cultural diversity and what they represent to the future of museums. It argues that the museum of the XXI century should be completely open to the public, free of the common elitisms and any physical, social, financial and cultural barrier that often drive people away. The current paradigm of museum should not stop at a mere sanctuary of relics and stories of the past and museums should face the challenges of a contemporary society in constant metamorphosis, where discrimination and social exclusion are a reality. Coimbra’s Municipal Museum is in a strategic and unique position to establish itself as a cornerstone when it comes to socially responsible museology. In a multicultural society and community, due mainly to the strong presence of students from all around the world, Coimbra must assume interculturality as part of its identity. This paper challenges itself in presenting a series of guidelines, strategies and proposals of activities that, if applied, will make of Coimbra’s Municipal Museum, a much more inclusive place, aware of the dimension of its mission and the service of its community.

Many researchers say that the multiculturalism in Russia has emerged recently, but this term started to dеvеlop few dеcades ago. During this time period we have seen its significant change and improvement. Russian sociеty culturally is very divеrse. There are many different nаtions, culturеs, religions, and even civilizations living in Russia. The uniqueness of Russia consists in the fact that those different culturеs are its indigenous people. There is probably no other stаte in the world with such a high number of different culturеs living together relatively peacefully for centuries. Also, culturally diverse population of Russia is not composed of migrаnts as in the case of Europe or the USA. For this purpose the beginning of the thesis is dedicated to understanding of the term multiculturalism, cultural diversity, minority groups and similar. Multiculturalism developed significantly especially in the phase of last events which took place in the Wеst. The 9/11 has brought several changes. Also, the latest incidents (and the speeches of the several lеadеrs) in Europe have shown Europeans and the rest of the world that the situation in immigrаnt welcoming rеgions is not positive as before. This makes the policy of multiculturalism even more complicated in the light of present developments. The...

Nowadays, the constant movement of people, nationally and internationally, which has been facilitated by the development of transports, has multiplied the migration flows. These flows have been growing in complexity and scale, increasing cultural diversity within States. Contemporary societies are a reflection of a vast plurality of individuals with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, languages and religions. Similarly, also the social, cultural and political structures of the societies that receive them are varied. This cultural diversity present in today’s societies poses a number of challenges to local, regional, national and international authorities in terms of management policies of it. A key issue is to find a formula that allows the integration of "others" in the receiving society, and at the same time maintaining the social cohesion and the general welfare of the population. In this context, the cultural measures assume a new importance. Culture at the service of politics can become an instrument of transmutation that allows the flourishing of new individual and collective identities, contributing to cultural diversity to take place in a socially just and respectful environment. Culture has the ability to promote intercultural dialogue between individuals of different origins giving rise to new spaces for dialogue, that museums are part of. This paper aims to address the relevance of the activities of these cultural institutions in the management of cultural diversity for the achievement of social cohesion in societies whose cultural diversity results from migration.

In 1947, India became a secular democratic republic proposing a new organization of society. Family laws, established according to religious affiliation and affirmative action policies, were recognized by the state without unanimity. In the political climate of the nineties, such secularism and group rights were questioned. From a socio-historical perspective, this research focuses on the practices & representations of Indian secularism and its potential relationship with laws differentiated by religious affiliation. Based on the notion of equality, the present research explores the rights and obligations associated with the just approach to religious diversity in independent India. Particular attention is given to the contemporary period and to Indian Muslims’ group rights. In this research, legal representations that emerge from the analysis of public and intellectual debates are paralleled with the viewpoints of seventeen of Kolkata’s middle-class informants (summer 2011). Using this approach, the discourse analysis informs the reader on the conception of secularism discussed in contemporary, independent India. Recognising the value of diversity, duties and self regulation, the majority of respondents reject differentiated rights for Muslims. Two approaches of the state emerge; one in which the State is more directive and one which provides more autonomy to the group.
