Texto completo da fonteUltra-wideband systems (UWB)are considered a cost-effective strategy to boostthe per-fiber through put in optical communications by pushing the boundaries of operational bandwidth beyond the conventional C-band. Recent experiments have showcased promising results with UWB high-capacity transmissions operating across the S+C+L bands, and evenfurther. These advancements raise the question of whether this technology can be effectively used to meet the growing demands for data traffic. This thesis provides an extensive investigation in to the opportunities and challenges ofUWB systems. Through the analysis of models that address the challenging wavelength dependent impairments, the core of this thesis consists in the development and validation of model-based power optimization techniques designed to enhance UWB system performance. The investigation is performed in numerical and experimental assessments in S+C+L systems. Moreover, the accurate model-based predictions obtained in this study offer invaluable insightsinto the transmission quality. These include ananalysis of the implications associated with potential UWB system failures. Finally, this thesis casts a vision for the future of this technology, discussing the feasibility of adopting UWBsystems over the deployment of parallel fibersystems

Texto completo da fonteA key challenge in today’s networks is to bridge the gap between high-speed optical transmission and limited electronic processing. This can be achieved by enabling payload to be switched directly in the optical domain.A simple solutionto provide optical switching is by allocating one wavelength channel to each source-destination pair, a technique called Optical Circuit Switching (OCS). Due to lack of sharing, OCS suffers from limited scalability. To overcome this issue, the capacity of each wavelength channel must be dynamically shared among different source-destination pairs. This requires data to be switched at subwavelength granularity by means of subwavelength switching. In this thesis, wepropose several solutions which enable subwavelength switching in optical networks. To show the relevance of the proposed solutions, we analyse their performance in terms of traffic capacity, flow throughput and packet delay. Performance is evaluated both through simulations and by means of appropriate queueing models. We first consider the case of Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) and we study the performance of synchronous time-slotted Wavelength DivisionMultiplexing (WDM) ring in which network nodes communicate by inserting and extracting data from time-slots. We present a fully distributedMedia Access Control (MAC) protocol designed to ensure fairness. We also propose a burst assembly mechanism able to ensure low assembly delays and high fill rates of the optical time-slots. We then propose subwavelength switching solutions which can be applied in the more general case of asynchronous wide area networks. We first propose to solve the contention problems of conventional Optical Burst Switching (OBS) and the low utilization issue of wavelength-routed OBS byimplementing a two-way reservation OBS scheme in which the size of the opticalburst increases proportionally with the network load so as to maximize resourceutilization. Next, we propose a solution for building an all-optical wide area network based on multipoint-to-multipoint lightpath sharing. We also design an associated MAC protocol and a dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm and analyse the performance of the proposed solution. By means of a case study, we show that the proposed solution has the potential to considerably reduce power consumption with respect to current router-based architectures. Finally, we propose a novel optical device able to solve contention directly in the optical domain withoutrequiring any optical buffering, electronic signalling or header processing. We show that thissimple device can be used as a building block for dynamic and power efficient short-range optical networks such as access networks or data centers

Texto completo da fonteSilicon photonics stands as a promising solution to replace copper interconnections for communication requirements highly integrated inside data centers, inter and intra chip links. To achieve high data rate, one can use multiplexing on optical links combined with disaggregated resources. In such architectures, an optical switch being able to cope with high size and data rate is a core element to be designed. In this study, we focused on intrachip interconnections on a photonic interposer, based on wavelength multiplexed links around the 1310nm communication channel. Integration of laser sources, modulation of the data and reception of the signal is not addressed here. Our goal is the optical switching. At first, the choice to use ring resonators based links has been justified in terms of compactness, network flexibility and low optical losses. Those structures are though very sensitive to environment and geometry fluctuations: it is important to understand well physical effects at stake. We thus describe different ring resonance models to then create a model both analytic and enough accurate to describe peak shifts. The validation of this model is performed with optical and electrical tests. This work allowed a better understanding of the ring parameters in order to minimize its impact on a WDM link. We then propose ideas of possible improvements for those resonators. Disks and resonators using the silicon nitride layer have been simulated, fabricated and tested to compare their performances to the reference design. One of those improvements is topologic. One resonator is replaced by two coupled rings, to achieve a higher order of resonance. Since most of the switching architecture are not adapted to the use of double rings, we developed a new approach on that topic. To limit thermal crosstalk in WDM switches while keeping low footprint, resonators are grouped with respect to their wavelength. The scalability is preserved with a truth table kept to a fair level of simplicity for any number of wavelength multiplexed. The way to drive every resonator is a core topic in switching architectures, especially the detection of the resonance to perform a feedback loop. We demonstrated in this work a transparent and non-invasive way to detect light in a ring waveguide, based on the doped junction already used to drive the ring. Finally, we tackle the question of the switch scalability (without use of active amplifiers). Starting from reasonable hypothesis, we estimate the total switch bandwidth of a classical architecture taking into account data rate, number of ports and the wavelength multiplexing. Those system results confirm or invalidate some of the hypothesis taken in the architecture part

Texto completo da fonteThe next generation of fibre-optic internet infrastructure will involve long-haul transmission systems with wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) channels at 40 and 100 Gb/s, and will be most likely based on coherent detection. This thesis focuses on these systems. We first demonstrate their unparallaled tolerance to linear fibre impairments, thanks to digital signal processing in the receiver, making them compatible with the legacy fibre infrastructure. Nevertheless, on top of linear fibre effects, optical systems may be limited by nonlinear fibre effects. This thesis gives insights on the nonlinear behaviour of signals detected with a coherent receiver, especially when multiplexed in polarisation. We show that the two polarisation components interact nonlinearly, which limits the system reach, even if a single channel is used. We particularly investigate the evolution of the impact of nonlinearities when increasing the bit rate from 40 to 100 Gb/s. We demonstrate that moving to higher symbol rates increases the tolerance to cross nonlinearities. This thesis also gives further insight on the interaction between polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) and nonlinearities. Unlike legacy systems, we have proved that, when distributed, PDM often turns out to be beneficial by reducing these nonlinear-induced penalities. On the contrary, when lumped, PDM may further increase the detrimental impact of nonlinearities. Finally, as a proof of the carriers' interest in 100 Gb/s technologies, this thesis reports the results of a field trial we have recently conducted on Telefónica's network in Spain showing the potential of coherent technologies to upgrade already deplyed networks

Texto completo da fonteThe continuous growth of Internet traffic implies an increased power consumption due to the many optical-to-electronic (OEO) conversions required by routers and switches. Transparent networks could curb this uncontrolled growth, but keeping the data in the optical domain has two adverse consequences: physical layer impairments accumulation which strongly degrades the performance due to amplication noise and non-linearities; and the wavelength continuity constraint (WCC) to keep the opticalsignal's wavelength unchanged in wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) optical networks which degrades network blocking performance. Wavelength converters (WCs) can alleviate the WCC constraint, but the only commercially available devices are the OEO-based WCs (OEO-WCs), however, their cost increases with bit-rates. On the other hand, all-optical wavelength converters (AO-WCs) have been demonstrated in research laboratories albeit with a limited conversion range and a performance that degrades converted signal's quality. In this thesis, we design the transmission layer using two different modulation formats sets with different bit-rates ranges; and consequently different performance estimation models. At the network level, our analyses show that WCs' contribution depends on traffic demands serving ordering in the online traffic assumption; that using xed-alternate routing (FAR) or least-loaded routing (LLR) algorithms and first-fit (FF) wavelength assignment algorithm, AO-WCs give the same performance enhancement as OEO-WCs. Moreover, we identify an optimum AO-WC conversion range and cascadability which shows that LLR requires lower number of conversions per channel compared to FAR
