Recently, a global market for anti-aging skin care using botanicals has been noticeably developing. Morin, 3,5,7,2′,4′-pentahydroxyflavone, is a polyphenol with many pharmacological properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammation and photoprotection. However, poor aqueous solubility of morin restricts its application in pharmaceuticals. The present study aimed to encapsulate morin into liposomal vesicles to improve its water solubility and skin penetration, and further investigated its ROS inhibition and anti-aging activity in HaCaT keratinocytes induced by particulate matters (PMs). Our data presented that morin was a strong DPPH• radical scavenger. Morin displayed a remarkable ROS inhibitory ability and protected keratinocytes against PMs by downregulating matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) expression via suppressing p-ERK and p-p38 in the MAPK pathway. Moreover, water solubility of liposomal morin (LM) prepared by the thin film hydration method was significantly better than free form of morin due to particle size reduction of LM. Our results also demonstrated that deformable liposomal vesicles were achieved for increasing dermal absorption. Additionally, LM (morin:lecinolws-50:tween-80:PF-68, 1:2.5:2.5:5) was able to effectively reduce generation of ROS, inactivate p-ERK, p-p38 and MMP-1 in HaCaT cells exposed to PM. In conclusion, our findings suggested that LM would be a bright candidate for various topical anti-aging and anti-pollution products.

Neste artigo, pretende-se discorrer sobre a aprendizagem da docência, bem como refletir sobre a natureza dessa aprendizagem, a partir do diálogo entre o Pensamento Complexo e a teoria dos Multiletramentos. Este estudo se firma numa pesquisa qualitativa do tipo bibliográfica de aprofundamento teórico com base nas concepções de Morin (1999, 2011, 2015, 2017); Nóvoa (2014); Reali e Mizukami (2000); Silva (2016); Rojo & Moura (2012), dentre outros trazidos ao debate. Dessa forma, espera-se, com tais diálogos, oportunizar uma discussão acerca da aprendizagem da docência tendo em vista os processos de multiletramentos para a formação do professorado.

Este artigo analisa como a Amazônia é representada no filme “Tainá – Uma aventura na Amazônia” (2001). O objetivo é verificar se a obra citada está apoiada no reforço de estereótipos regionais e clichês culturais. Como embasamento teórico, optou-se por seguir o pensamento complexo de Edgar Morin, em diálogo com a ideia de “invenção da Amazônia”, trabalhada por Neide Gondim, e com as noções trabalhadas em “A Sociedade do Espetáculo”, por Guy Debord. O trabalho foi elaborado a partir de pesquisas bibliográficas e da observação do filme em questão. Conforme a análise realizada, foi possível constatar que a região é representada de forma exótica e seus personagens reforçam estereótipos cristalizados pelo senso comum. A bandeira da sustentabilidade e da preservação ambiental serve como um discurso superficial para justificar a proposta ecológica do filme.
Abstract
This paper examines how the Amazon is represented in the film Taina - An adventure in the Amazon (2001). The aim is to check that the aforementioned work is supported in strengthening stereotypes regional and cultural pastiche. As theoretical basis opted for Edgar Morin in dialogue with the idea of the Invention of the Amazon, crafted by Neide Gondim and The Society of the Spectacle by Guy Debord. The work was developed from literature searches and empirical observation of the film in question. According to the analysis, it was found that the region is represented exotically and his characters reinforce stereotypes crystallized by common sense. The flag of sustainability and environmental protection serves only as a superficial speech to justify the ecological proposal of the movie.

Le Temps du ghetto (Frédéric Rossif) and Chronique d’un été (Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin), both released in 1961, are the first French documentary films featuring Jewish survivors recounting their persecutions during World War 2 in front of a camera. The appearance of Shoah survivors in cinema is commonly assessed as a consequence of the 1961 Eichmann trial. This article aims to take a different stance, highlighting the mise-en-scène of these two particular films, which invite a survivor to symbolically relive his traumatic past in front of the film crew and showing that this cathartic process is used similarly twenty years later in selected sequences of Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah.

One of the countries in Europe with the biggest refugee crisis is Greece and triggers the emergence of refoulement. The non-refoulement principle is an absolute form protection for a refugee and must be obeyed by all ratifying countries. On that basis, Greece needs an additional assistance from the European Union as a regional organization that houses most European countries. This study aims to explain the commitment of the European Union in fulfilling the principle of non-refoulement to the refugee crisis in Greece, especially after the fire incident at Camp Moria. This research is a normative legal research with a statute approach and a conceptual approach. The sources of legal materials used are based on 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees also the non-refoulement principle. The technique of collecting legal materials used is library research and analyzed through inductive analysis techniques. The results showed that the condition of the refugee crisis in Greece especially after the fire at Camp Moria was so alarming where the refugees are in danger of being refoulemented. In dealing with the refugee crisis that occurred in Greece, the European Union has tried to issue policies and decisions but the policies have not been implemented optimally.

Si les travaux portant sur la ville et le cinéma de fiction sont nombreux, l'étude des relations entre l'espace urbain et le film documentaire demeure peu développée. Cette thèse explore cet autre versant de la production cinématographique urbaine, à travers l'analyse d'ceuvres contemporaines faisant écho au projet fondateur du cinéma direct en France. Relu en tant que film urbain, Chronique d'un été (1961) se révèle être une riche matrice pour interroger la manière dont le cinéma peut non seulement représenter les villes d'aujourd'hui, mais aussi prendre part aux dynamiques urbaines. Dans les trente dernières années, le projet de J. Rouch et E. Morin trouve des échos nouveaux chez les cinéastes à « disposition ethnographique » (Clifford) qui se font à la fois spectateurs et acteurs de / dans la ville. Dans les films de ces derniers, la mise en scène urbaine est modelée par l'expérience vécue de la rencontre et du parcours. En pratiquant la ville par le cinéma, les documentaristes contribuent à renouveler l'urbanité de celle-ci, c'est-à-dire la densité et la diversité des interactions sociales. Contre les dynamiques contemporaines de déliaison, les cinéastes urbains tentent en effet de réinventer la possibilité d'un corps collectif. Dans différents contextes, en Europe et en Amérique du Nord, ils imaginent des communautés multiculturelles plus ou moins instituées et proposent au spectateur d'en faire l'expérience imaginaire, mais dans le cadre d'une « lecture documentarisante » (Odin). Elle s'ancre dans la multiplicité des pratiques ordinaires pour donner forme à une ville possible, une ville à venirThe study of the relationships between urban space and documentary cinema has not been given the necessary attention next to the numerous academic works focused on city and fiction film. This research explores this other aspect of urban cinema, through the analysis of contemporary works echoing the project that founded direct cinema in France. Seen as an urban film, Chronicle Of A Summer (1961) offers a rich matrix to explore how cinema can not only represent contemporary cities, but also take part in urban dynamics itself. In the last thirty years, J. Rouch and E. Morin's project finds new resonances among filmmakers with "ethnographie disposition" (Clifford) who are both spectators and actors in the city. This research aims to understand how, in their films, urban mise en scène is shaped by the experience of interaction and walk. By practicing the city through cinema, documentary filmmakers contribute to renew urbanity, that is to say, the density and diversity of social interactions. Against contemporary dynamics of fragmentation, urban filmmakers try to reinvent the possibility of a collective entity. In different contexts, in Europe and North America, they imagine more or less instituted multicultural communities. These filmmakers invite the spectator to engage in an imaginary experience of this social space, but as part of a "documentarizing reading" (Odin). The objective of this study was to survey the use and occupation of land from the land-based water systems within the boundaries of the GUAJUMA Environmental Protection Area, taking as a space-time scale the physiognomy of the current landscape from the 1980s (State Park) to the 2010. The study area (APA GUAJUMA, municipality of Nhamundá - Amazonas) covers the following geographic coordinates: North - 2 ° 5'21.61 "S - 56 ° 51'30.86" W; Sul-2 ° 18'17.48 ° S-56 ° 49'20.07 ° W; East-2 ° 10'20.68 "S-56 ° 46'49.60" W; West-2 ° 12'26.02 "S-57 ° 3'33.07" W. The methodology was based on the Case Study, whose main techniques are: data collection at the research site - Direct Observation, Geographic Inventory Protocol; Geographic Information System - computer environment consisting of the following: ArcGis 10.1; TerraClass Project (INPE / EMBRAPA-2004-2014), LANDSAT TM 5 and 8; Images of Radar SRTM; Planimetric Letters 1: 100,000 (DGS-MI 469 - Vila do Arari - AM and MI 470 - Nhamundá, 1981); and documentary surveys. The approach that served as the basis for the research was Edgar Morin's Complex Thought. From there the data were systematized, analyzed and discussed, reaching the result that the water systems, landscape modellers are altered. This concludes by confirming the Hypothesis. "What anthropic actions are generating change in the physiognomy of the landscape of the Guajuma APA in the time space 1980 to the decade of 2010.
O estudo realizado objetivou inventariar o uso e ocupação da terra dos sistemas hídricos de terra firme, nos delimites da Área de Proteção Ambiental GUAJUMA, tomando como escala espaço-temporal da fisionomia da paisagem atual, da década de 1980 (Parque Estadual) até a de 2010. A área de estudo (APA GUAJUMA, município de Nhamundá - Amazonas) abrange as seguintes coordenadas geográficas: Norte - 2° 5'21.61"S- 56°51'30.86"W; Sul - 2°18'17.48"S - 56°49'20.07"W; Leste - 2°10'20.68"S- 56°46'49.60"W; Oeste - 2°12'26.02"S- 57° 3'33.07"W. A Metodologia teve por base o Estudo de Caso, cujas principais técnicas estão: as de coletas de dados no local da pesquisa – Observação Direta, Protocolo de Inventariamento Geográfico; Sistema de Informação Geográfica – ambiente computadorizado constituído pelos seguintes: ArcGis 10.1; Projeto TerraClass (INPE/EMBRAPA-2004-2014); LANDSAT TM 5 e 8; Imagens de Radar SRTM; Cartas Planimétricas 1:100.000 (DGS-MI 469 – Vila do Arari - AM e MI 470 – Nhamundá, 1981); e os levantamentos documentais. O método de abordagem que serviu para fundamentar a pesquisa foi o Pensamento Complexo de Edgar Morin. A partir dele os dados foram, sistematizados, analisados e discutidos, chegando ao resultado, que os sistemas hídricos, modeladores da paisagem estão alterados. Com isso conclui-se confirmando a Hipótese de que ações antrópicas estão gerando alteração na fisionomia da paisagem da APA Guajuma no tempo espaço década 1980 à década de 2010”.

Comme elle traite d'un sujet particulièrement vaste, notre analyse de l'oeuvre de Robert Morin ne cherche pas à être exhaustive, mais tend plutôt à mettre en perspective les différents modèles d'entremêlement de documentaire et de fiction explorés par le cinéaste tout au long de son parcours. Par conséquent, nous avons classifié le contenu de la filmographie de Morin en nous appuyant sur les trois axes relevés par Fabrice Montal dans un texte critique paru en complément de Moments donnés (Robert Morin: entrevue(s)), et avons arrêté notre sélection sur deux films et une vidéo, représentatifs de chacune des catégories: Le voleur vit en enfer, Ma vie c'est pour le restant de mes jours et Le nèg '. Au cours de notre analyse, il s'agira de caractériser la relation de ces documents avec la réalité, en établissant la part de documentaire et de fiction qu'ils comportent, et de déterminer quelles sont les conséquences de cette fusion des genres sur l'acte de spectature ainsi que sur la question de la vérité au cinéma. Nous traiterons, donc, du rapport particulier qu'entretient avec la réalité le cinéma en général, tant sur le plan de l'image que du récit. Ces deux angles nous permettront de présenter les principales théories sur le sujet: la transparence d'André Bazin, l'illusionnisme tel que présenté notamment par Jacques Aumont et le réalisme perceptuel de Gregory Currie, en ce qui concerne l'image; la narratologie explicitée par Christian Metz, André Gaudreault et François Jost, les images-temps et les images-mouvements relevées par Gilles Deleuze, pour ce qui est du récit. Il sera ensuite question des caractéristiques propres aux deux grands genres cinématographiques que sont le documentaire et la fiction, à la lumière des ouvrages de Jean-Marie Schaeffer et de Guy Gauthier. La nation s’est affirmée à partir de la fin du 18e siècle comme l’un des grands paramètres de la modernité. Sa remise en cause, tout spécialement dans les dernières décennies du siècle dernier, est à la fois partie prenante et symptomatique de l’actuel phénomène d’effritement des identités collectives. Le Québec n’échappe pas à ce courant de fond, comme en témoigne l’œuvre du vidéaste et cinéaste Robert Morin, qui propose une galerie de personnages en manque d’attaches et souvent réduits à leur propre subjectivité. Dans un contexte de questionnement généralisé des concepts de nation et de collectivité, ces individualités se sentent isolées et tentent désespérément de réactualiser les liens qui les unissent à leurs semblables, mais sans grand succès. La communauté revêt ainsi une dimension nostalgique, parcourant l’œuvre de Morin dans son entièreté et se manifestant de différentes manières, tant à l’écran qu’à travers son approche du médium qui reste grandement tributaire des pratiques filmiques et vidéographiques des années ’60 et ’70. Écartelé entre la prise de conscience de son isolement et son désir d’appartenir à une entité collective, qu’elle soit nationale ou autre, le sujet délié que l’on retrouve chez Morin, comme cette thèse tente de le démontrer, subit ce phénomène de déliaison et lutte simultanément pour l’enrayer.Since the end of the 18th century, the nation has asserted itself as one of the cornerstone institution of modernity. Its questioning, especially in the later decades of the last century, is at the same time symptomatic and partly responsible for the present erosion of the sense of collective identity. In Quebec, this phenomenon is also discernable, as the works of the filmmaker Robert Morin seem to suggest, with their cast of solitary characters frequently reduced to their own subjectivity. In this context, isolated individuals are trying with great urgency to revive the ties that bind them with their fellow men and women, but without much success. Thereby, in different ways, the concept of community appears in a nostalgic light, on the screen as much as in Morin’s ways of dealing with the medium, his practice being very influenced by those of the sixties and the seventies. As this thesis tries to suggest, the unbind subject which is represented in Morin’s works, torn between his awareness of aloneness and his desire to be part of a social community (whether national or not), experience this ongoing process of social erosion, while simultaneously trying to stop it.

Wind is the dominant environmental factor affecting wildland fire intensity and spread.
Previously, fire analysts and managers have relied on local measurements and site-specific
forecasts to determine how winds influence fire. The advancements in computer hardware,
increased availability of electronic topographical and experimental data, and advances
in numerical methods for computing winds, have led to the development of new
tools capable of simulating wind flow. Several numerical models have been developed
for fire prediction and forecasting. Modelling wind in physics-based models like Fire
Dynamics Simulator (FDS) has been shown to produce promising results, but at an inordinate
cost. Because of the high computational expense, physics-based models are not
suitable for operational use. Little research has been conducted to improve the computational
speed of these models. The current study intends to decrease the computational
cost of physics-based fire simulations and improve physics-based models by including
more complicated driving winds.
Physics-based wildfire simulations are driven by inlet boundary conditions which model
the atmospheric boundary layer. Various inlet conditions, such as the 1/7-powerlaw or
the log law models with artificial turbulence (e.g. the synthetic eddy method, [SEM])
can be used as an inlet to generate a statistically steady wind field for a fire simulation.
The power-law inlet is the default inlet condition used in FDS where the wind develops
turbulence as it sweeps through the domain, and is often used with wall-of-wind type
methods. The log-law inlet generates a log wind profile similar to Atmospheric Boundary
Layer (ABL). Development of techniques for imposing inlet conditions and initial conditions
for flow simulations have been topics of interest for the past few decades. Current
inlet and initial conditions requires time in a scale order of 100s of CPU hours, for generating an appropriate condition to start a fire simulation, hence resulting in increased
computational expense. A novel nesting method has been implemented, which involves
two regions : penalisation and blending, named as the PenaBlending method. The initial
conditions of the fire simulations in FDS are set to the initial condition prescribed by an
external model or simulation. This is achieved by a one-way coupling method. External
wind data, for which u,v,w can vary in space and time, can be obtained. The precursor
data can be generated either from any reduced wind model such as Windninja, which
gives terrain modified wind data, or by using analytical methods such as generating logarithmic
windfield using Matlab. These external data can be introduced into the FDS domain
through a penalization region at the inlet/outlet. A blending region has also been
implemented near the specified inlet/outlet which allows a smooth mixing of a precursor
wind field to that in the simulation domain. This new inlet condition allows complicated
terrain modified temporally and spatially varying wind fields, obtained from precursor
simulations or any other models, to be implemented relatively easily in the FDS domain.
To test the implementation of this method, a flat terrain is considered in the current study.
However, this method could also be used for complicated terrain structures, as a part of
future studies. The PenaBlending method provides appropriate flow conditions with reduced
computational effort (up to ~ 80%), to start a fire simulation, and, hence, reduces
the computational expense of physics-based models.
The results obtained using the PenaBlending method have been compared with that obtained
using the existing inlet conditions of FDS, like the SEM method, wall-of-wind
method and mean-forcing methods, using the 1/7 power-law or log-law inlets. To test
these three methods, a set of fire simulations have been conducted and tested against the
PenaBlending method. It was found that the results of the PenaBlending methods agree
well with that of existing methods, with small variations for both the wind and fire cases.
FDS 6.6.0 (the version used in this study) requires a very fine grid to obtain grid convergence.
This is not feasible in the case of a large-scale simulation because of very high
computation cost. FDS 6.2.0, with a reaction-rate-limiter combustion model, needs less
fine grids to obtain grid convergence. Therefore, this combustion model is re-introduced into FDS 6.6.0, providing an option of choosing between two different combustion models,
as a part of this study. For all the simulations, the reaction-rate-limiter combustion
model has been used. The simulations are carried out in a neutral-atmospheric stability
condition. However, the PenaBlending method can apply any general driving wind, and
the effect of atmospheric stability, could be included, as part of future studies. The PenaBlending
method could be extended in conjunction with Monin-Obukhov Similarity
Theory (introduced in FDS 6.6.0) to model fire in various atmospheric stability conditions.

The English title of a recent book by renowned film scholar Yomota Inuhiko reads: “What is Japanese Cinema?”. In the preface to the English edition Yomota states that the direction we might take, should we try to provide an answer to the question, changes according to which word, “Japanese” or “Cinema” we choose to emphasize. When his survey reaches the recent past, the Japanese scholar describes the 2000s as “an era of chaos”. Starting from these questions and affirmations, and combining them with others made by scholars such as David Bordwell, Mitsuyo Wada-Marciano, Andrew Dorman and Mori Naoyuki, the following article attempts to explore a more specific doubt: “What is contemporary Japanese cinema”? In so doing, however, other questions arise, as we need to define when contemporaneity starts and what makes it different both from previous eras, and from the contemporaneity of other national cinemas. The further we probe, the more complex our definition becomes.

This chapter explains the resulting decision to have the Army of South Vietnam (ARVN) enter Laos in early 1971 to block North Vietnamese soldiers and supplies from moving down the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The critical actor in this planning was General Alexander Haig, who was the link between Nixon and Kissinger in Washington and General Creighton Abrams and President Thieu in Saigon. Secretary Rogers and CIA Director Richard Helms opposed the plan. In Vientiane, US Ambassador Godley enlisted Souvanna Phouma’s reluctant support. On the eve of the operation, Daniel Ellsberg confronted Henry Kissinger at an MIT gathering about the prospect of civilian casualties.

This chapter is concerned with Michael Haneke’s Funny Games and the role of imagination in cinematic engagement. Drawing upon the work of Richard Moran, the chapter shows how Funny Games makes the case that a film’s audience is, through its imaginative engagement, morally implicated in the events depicted on screen. I demonstrate that Funny Games develops certain themes found in Moran’s “The Expression of Feeling in Imagination.” While the bulk of Moran’s article is devoted to attacking a particular trend in the philosophical aesthetics literature, wherein film viewing is understood as an exercise in make-believe, Moran ends on a constructive note, recommending additional ways that imagination might be deployed for the purpose of appreciating art. My suggestion is that Funny Games uses the resources of its medium to investigate the role of imagination in our engagement with film in ways first suggested by Moran, thereby engaging philosophically with questions about aesthetics, art, and the philosophy of film.

It attends to the representation of black people in various locations—from the inner city to the suburbs to a historical memory of the plantation slavery, the middle passage, and an African motherland—in visual forms, including Afrocentrist iconography, photography, and fine art. By attending to popular images, an important if not fuller picture of Black visual politics during the post-civil rights era becomes apparent.

According to Zavala (2016) the aesthetics of cinema is any philosophical reflection on the nature of cinema and on the experience of the film viewer. According to Aumont et al (1985) the aesthetics of cinema is the study of cinema as art and one of the aspects it presents is the analysis of films. For Lotman (1979), contemporary cinema incorporates acoustic-visual messages and extra-textual relations that add structures of very varied meaning, and allows us to define cinema as a polyphonic art. Based on the contributions of Morin (1994, 1999) and Nicolescu (2009) with the epistemology of complexity and transdisciplinarity, the analysis of the film V for Vendetta (2005), presents the understanding of dystopia as a complex social system where different levels of reality intervene.

This chapter is set at a Tokyo meeting of international journalists with Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa, at a hotel on Mount Fuji. Kurosawa is there to discuss Ran, his 16th century tale of Lord Mori, a King Lear-like personage with three sons replacing Lear’s three daughters. There is also in Ran a femme fatale, Lady Kaede, who could be said to resemble Lady Macbeth. Kurosawa insists that “About Shakespeare, I am not a specialist,” and that he chose to make a film about Lord Mori not for King Lear because “I liked his personality. If he lived in Kyoto, he would have united Japan.”

On the night of 8 September 2020, the Lesvos’ Reception and Identification Centre (RIC) – better known as Moria-hotspot – was set on fire by its inhabitants. After two days of consecutive fires, ‘the worst refugee camp on earth’, according to MSF, was burned to the ground. At that moment, the camp and the surrounding olive groves were the residence of circa 12,500 people, among which more than 400 unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) living in inhumane conditions. A few days later, the URMs from Moria were poised to be relocated to other EU countries, providing an Aristotelian catharsis after the ongoing tragedy. This event was followed by another attempted arson, that of the overcrowded Samos Reception and Identification Centre. It started from the URMs’ quarters, a desperate attempt to make themselves visible by setting their living space on fire. The purpose of this chapter is to see how international, European and national legislation on unaccompanied minors are translated into actual reception practices in the RICs on the Greek islands. We hereto examine relevant international, EU and Greek legislation, describe the evolution of the Greek refugee camps on the islands of Lesvos and Samos, and analyse interviews with URMs about their experiences in these hotspots.

Drawing from notions of ‘synthesis’ and ‘ideology’ associated with Edgar Morin and Richard Dyer, theories of late-colonial stardom proposed by Guy Austin and Sarah Leahy, alongside Ginette Vincendeau’s understanding of Jean Gabin’s ‘redeemed’ militarised masculinity, this chapter is split into two sections. In part one, it focuses on Alain Cavalier’s 1964 L’Insoumis/The Unvanquished, illustrating the ways in which Cavalier frames the face of Alain Delon, undoubtedly one of the biggest French film stars of the late-colonial period, as a beautiful object; one that neutralises the paramilitary violence performed by his filmic body. Part two of this chapter then extends these thoughts to Mark Robson’s Les Centurions/Lost Command (1966), suggesting that a similar tendency towards historical sublimation is at play in Robson’s film, specifically in relation to the director’s portrayal of paratroopers as visual spectacles to be admired and adored. I ultimately suggest that – through their configurations of stardom – neither film represents the French military as guilty of the colonial crimes committed in the extra-filmic world. In both, beauty supersedes violence as France’s complicity in atrocities is – to use Dyer’s lexicon – ‘obscured’.

Abstract Kogut and Zander (1996) have proposed “that a firm be understood as a social community specializing in the speed and efficiency in the creation and transfer of knowledge” (p. 503). This is an important and relatively new perspective on the theory of the firm currently being formalized through the ongoing work of these authors (Kogut and Zander 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, Zander and Kogut 1995) and several others (Boisot 1995, Conner and Prahalad 1996, Loasby 1991, Nonaka and Takeuchi 1995, Spender 1996). Standing in stark contrast to the more established transaction cost theory that is grounded in the assumption of human opportunism and the resulting conditions of market failure (e.g., Williamson 1975), those with this new perspective essentially argue that organizations have some particular capabilities for creating and sharing knowledge that give them their distinctive advantage over other institutional arrangements, such as markets. For strategy theory, the implications of this emerging perspective lie in a shift of focus from the historically dominant theme of value appropriation to one of value creation (Moran and Ghoshal 1996).

A presente pesquisa estuda a representação da figura do gladiador dentro da linguagem cinematográfica a partir de uma análise comparativa entre dois filmes, Spartacus (Stanley Kubrick, 1960) e Gladiador (Ridley Scott, 2000). Oestudo se baseia na relação entre cinema e história proposta por Marc Ferro, segundo a qual o filme ultrapassa o seu caráter de obra de arte para ser um produto das relações sócio-históricas, e alia-se ao trabalho de Edgar Morin sobre as características de projeção e identificação presentes na relação do público com as imagens projetadas no écran, assim como no processo de construção destas imagens. Por fim, busca entender como uma imagem de Antigüidade é reconstruída e compreendida dentro de concepções que estão presentes na atualidade.

Concrete has been one of the most popular construction materials around the world. However, sulphate ion will cause of concrete degradation and lead to the decrease of service life of concrete structures. The formation of ettringite and other reaction products can lead to the decrease of service life of concrete structures, thus, a continuous monitoring of sulphate ions is needed as a reference for the maintenance work of concrete structures. This paper presents the design and development of a fluorescence-based fiber optic sulphate sensor for this purpose. The sensor's design capitalizes on the changes in fluorescent intensity of morin-metal ion complexes induced by sulphate concentration changes. By using cellulose acetate, the complex is transformed from a solution to a thin film, serving as the sensing element in the sensor probe. The sensor provides a response over a sulphate molarity range of 0 mol/l to 0.010 mol/l. And after being embedded inside the cement paste, the sensor still responds to sulphate. These features make this fluorescence-based fiber optic sulphate sensor potentially suited for in field and long-term monitoring of sulphate ions in the concrete structures, thereby enhancing structural health monitoring within the civil engineering sector.

The experiment took place over horizontally homogeneous terrain. The intensity variances were measured simultaneously from a laser beam received through a 1-mm aperture and from a large-aperture scintillometer. The ratio of these variances gives the inner scale l0. Knowing l0, either variance gives C n 2 Monin-Obukhov similarity theory relates heat and momentum fluxes to C n 2 and l0. A three-axis sonic anemometer and resistance wire thermometer were used to provide in situ measurements of these fluxes. Good agreement was obtained. Spaced hot film anemometers measured the velocity structure parameter, from which an in situ value of l0 was obtained. Optical scintillation was the superior method of obtaining l0. An optical scintillation crosswind meter was also deployed. Its axis was oriented vertically to measure the net vertical drift of rising, hot, turbulent air. These measurements correlated with heat flux for very unstable conditions. Also, C n 2 scintillometers were operated at two heights.

Aim/Purpose. This is a literature review that defines agile supply chain management (ASCM), discusses several competing theories (particularly ones with some empirical evidence), their research limitations (e.g., cultural and industry homogeneity), and future directions for research that would add to the field’s body of knowledge. Background. Agile supply chain management (ASCM) is a relatively recent phenomenon, with most academic articles published between 2001 and the present. However, the ASCM literature is quite fragmented, with no dominant theory. Both the ASCM literature and private industry would benefit from a heterogenous (i.e., multi-site, multi-industry) empirical study in the U.S. In this context, several forward-looking topics are considered as business “problems of practice”, including: 1) elaborating on existing agile supply chain rating instruments; and 2) generating empirical data from industry to support Zhu et al.’s (2022) EDGE supply chain framework. The challenges for supply chain managers are ones of assessing the agility of their firm’s supply chain and deciding on a theoretically based action plan for making targeted improvements. Methodology. The literature review was limited to refereed journals (i.e., does not include popular business journals, unpublished dissertations, etc.), yielding approximately 30 topic-relevant papers. The three-step review methodology (i.e., comprehensive material search, descriptive analysis and classification, theoretical and content analysis) attempts to replicate that of Shashi et al. (2020). Contribution. This paper defines ASCM and examines some of its key theoretical paradigms, including Christopher’s (2000) three-dimensional model for achieving agility, Lee’s (2004) Triple-A framework, and Lin et al.’s (2006) “route to agility” drivers-capabilities-goals model. It then discusses empirical support for the respective theories as well as some of their research limitations (e.g., cultural and industry homogeneity). Finally, it reviews some of the germane tools developed to assess the appropriateness of an agile approach in industry. This effort groups the literature into major theories with empirical support, identifies existing instruments to gauge an organization’s level of agile supply chain, and proposes several potential lines of research that would help the practitioner assess and improve the agility of the supply chain. Findings. In this context, several forward-looking topics are considered as business “problems of practice”, including: 1) elaborating on existing agile supply chain rating instruments; and 2) generating empirical data from industry to support Zhu et al.’s (2022) EDGE supply chain framework. Recommendations for Practitioners. The challenges for supply chain managers are ones of assessing the agility of the firm’s supply chain and deciding on a theoretically based action plan for making targeted improvements. Recommendations for Researchers. Here are some possibilities going forward: • Replicate the Balaji et al. (2015) TADS study with a more culturally and industrially diverse sample. In terms of theory, the TADS instrument has a link to Lin et al.’s (2006) notion of the SC agility index. The original pilot study used a small Indian steel industry sample. For example, a sample of 10 to 25 U.S.-based Institute of Supply Management (ISM) member companies might be used. Another variation from the original study might be varying the intervention intended to improve the firm's SC agility. • Operationalize the Hofman and Cecere (2005) proposed portfolio of agile SC metrics based on dimensions of speed, predictability, ease, and quality. In all likelihood, this would be a series of studies that would include development of scale items, questionnaire administration to an appropriate sample, and a factor analysis to evaluate item conceptual loadings. Here, the factor analysis ostensibly would be part of advancing the inherent theory. The next step would be an instrument reliability and validity study. • Conduct a correlational study to examine further the relationship between the agile SC and customer satisfaction. Such a study has its roots in the previous work of Jawahar et al. (2020), Kisperska-Moron and Swierczek (2009), and Power et al. (2001). • Advance Zhu et al.'s (2022) EDGE (i.e., enablers, suppliers, goals, and expertise) supply chain framework by doing a correlational study of firms whose agile SCs are blockchain and Internet of Things (IoT) capable. The authors themselves suggest this approach as no empirical data yet exists to support the EDGE model. • Similarly, conduct an empirical study to provide support to the Bamakan et al. (2021) six-layer evaluation system of service supply chain performance that is based on a blockchain-IoT-big data framework. Impact on Society. Despite the diverse theoretical perspectives, there are tools available for sup-ply chain managers to assess their firm’s supply chain agility. Future Research. This author recommends taking the direction suggested by Zhu et al. (2022), one of examining firms whose supply chains are blockchain and IoT capable. This approach would provide some empirical support to the EDGE supply chain framework.
