This book arises from a three-year comparative research program concerning co-operative enterprises in Australia and Italy. The book explores the historical development, legal framework and the peak organisations of co-operatives in the two countries. Specific comparative chapters focus on consumer, credit, and worker-producer co-operatives. The book deepens the analysis of co-operatives by containing chapters that examine specific theoretical and empirical issues such as the theory of co-operative firms as collective entrepreneurial action. Monographic chapters include more in depth analysis of specific typologies of co-operatives, such as social and community oriented co-operatives, some of which were created to contrast organized crime in Southern Italy. The book concludes with an assessment of the implications of the project for public policy.

Each Concentrate revision guide is packed with essential information, key cases, revision tips, exam Q&As, and more. Concentrates show you what to expect in a law exam, what examiners are looking for, and how to achieve extra marks. This chapter discusses the co-ownership of property. Co-owned property is where two or more people are entitled to possess and enjoy the property at the same time. Today, there are two types of co-ownership: a joint tenancy and a tenancy in common. Co-owned property is held on trust and, since the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996 (TLATA) this is generally a trust of land. Legal title can only be held as a joint tenancy, by a maximum of four people. Equitable title can be held as a joint tenancy or a tenancy in common by an unlimited number of people. A joint tenancy in equity, but not at law, can be severed to create a tenancy in common. Disputes between co-owners may be dealt with by making an application to court. Where a co-owner becomes bankrupt, the trustee in bankruptcy must make an application to court to request a sale of the co-owned property.

The community co-operatives that are spreading today in many parts of the world are the arrival point of an evolutionary process that has seen the progressive shift of co-operatives’ focus from specific social and professional groups to society as a whole. Since the term ‘community co-operative’ is relatively new and similar institutions are named differently at different times, the first task is to elucidate the concept. Its basic elements are community goods, territory, and citizenship, which are discussed with reference to factual cases. We then discuss differences between new community co-operatives and old ones. In the second part we review some data about them, with a special focus on customer-owned providers of public services. The chapter closes with a discussion of the economic reasons why citizen participation through consumer ownership this organizational mode is more likely to expand today in response to privatization failures than it did in the past.

The United States has a long and proud tradition of co-operative labour arrangements. Today, worker co-operatives in the US encompass great diversity, not only in the type and size of enterprise, but also in their objectives and ideological commitments. This, in addition to the fact that the US lacks a consistent national policy as regards co-operatives, makes it challenging for researchers to provide more than a general picture of the sector in the United States. It is, however, clear that, although co-operatives are present in many different sectors, worker co-operatives today make up a very small portion of the US economy. This chapter discusses the historical development and current extent of US worker co-operatives, and the challenges and opportunities for growth and change they face. It also considers the character of the sector in terms of different development models, its role in community/economic development, and its orientation towards democratic social change.

Alan Berkman (1945–2009) was no campus radical in the mid-1960s; he was a promising Ivy League student, football player, Eagle Scout, and fraternity president. But when he was a medical student and doctor, his politics began to change, and soon he was providing covert care to members of revolutionary groups like the Weather Underground and becoming increasingly radicalized by his experiences at the Wounded Knee takeover, at the Attica Prison uprising, and at health clinics for the poor. When the government went after him, he went underground and participated in bombings of government buildings. He was eventually captured and served eight years in some of America's worst penitentiaries, barely surviving two rounds of cancer. After his release in 1992, he returned to medical practice and became an HIV/AIDS physician, teacher, and global health activist. In the final years of his life, he successfully worked to change U.S. policy, making AIDS treatment more widely available in the global south and saving millions of lives around the world. Using Berkman's unfinished prison memoir, FBI records, letters, and hundreds of interviews, Susan M. Reverby sheds fascinating light on questions of political violence and revolutionary zeal in her account of Berkman's extraordinary transformation from doctor to co-conspirator for justice

This chapter outlines the history of the Fair Trade movement, and discusses several key issues and challenges it faces. It then explores the relationship between Fair Trade and the co-operative and mutual movement, considering the close connection between the two, both in terms of producer groups and of wholesale organizations. Both share key elements of participation and empowerment and pay careful attention to economic development and fair governance. The development of Fair Trade globally is then examined, and some of its wider impacts, such as fairer supply chain practices, are explored. The authors conclude by affirming that Fair Trade is more than just a re-actualization of the co-operative idea

All books in this flagship series contain carefully selected substantial extracts from key cases, legislation, and academic debate, providing able students with a stand-alone resource. This chapter deals with the priority rules applicable where co-owned land is sold or mortgaged. It concentrates on overreaching.. It is theorised that s 27(1) of the Law of the Property Act 1925 (LPA 1925) provides the basis of overreaching. Other theories include that the basis of overreaching lies in the doctrine of conversion and the trustees’ powers of disposition. The chapter considers the preconditions for overreaching to take place and the practical division that arises between trusts with one and two (or more) trustees. The chapter explores the contentious question of the effect on overreaching where a transaction constitutes an intra vires or ultra vires breach of trust and the protection available to purchasers in those circumstances where a breach of trust precludes overreaching.

Co-creative methods are increasingly used to understand and facilitate integration processes of migrants in immigrant societies. This volume aims to contribute to the debates on the ways in which co-creative methods may advance migrant integration. More specifically, the contributions investigate how co-creative research strategies can provide insights into how integration processes into various domains of immigrant society (e.g., language learning, housing, employment) are shaped, and how they can contribute to policy making and new policy practices. Because co-creative methods are relatively new approaches to research and policy making, the authors evaluate and demonstrate the pitfalls and benefits of using them. Starting with a theoretical and methodological overview of co-creative methods, empirical chapters document and critically assess ongoing research experiences and studies to incorporate co-creative methods in academic research across Europe. Co-creation in Migration Studies analyses the use of co-creative methods in migrant research and policy making, reflects upon the conditions required to successfully implement these methods, and offers new insights and recommendations for future research and policy making practices.

The main analytical and multidisciplinary frameworks adopted for understanding the multinational enterprise (MNE) have tended to be largely non-spatial and non-geographical in nature. Although there have been some recent developments incorporating geography into the analysis of the of MNE studies the longstanding and widespread absence of geography in MNE studies leads to analytical problems. In particular, in the investigation of MNE operations and their interactions with different economic actors and contexts, the use of typical dichotomies, such as home versus host, horizontal versus vertical integration, and determinant versus impact, today prove to be much less effective or relevant than might previously have been the case. More specifically, the fundamental geographical and institutional re-orderings associated with modern globalization mean that nowadays we see increasingly co-dependent and co-evolutionary corporate and geographical networks. Understanding these is essential in order to understand the new international division of labour.

Dual diagnosis, the co-occurrence of substance abuse and another psychiatric disorder, is common. There is evidence to suggest that impulsivity may serve as a common substrate for these comorbidities, despite behavioral and biochemical differences between disorders. This chapter describes common neurobiological and behavioral findings between individuals with high impulsivity and those with dual diagnosis. Specifically, we focus on the co-occurrence of substance abuse with schizophrenia, eating disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, antisocial and borderline personality disorders, and bipolar disorder. For each type of dual diagnosis, we review literature that provides empirical evidence for the presence of impulsivity and treatment recommendations. In this context, we propose a “bottom-up” conceptualization, in which clusters of co-occurring phenotypes are used to formulate diagnostic and clinical plans; such an approach may produce more homogeneous diagnostic groups than exist in the current system. Further, a bottom-up approach may reveal that dual-diagnosis disorders represent distinct groups that share a common factor of impulsivity.

Up until recently, the role of the customer in economic geography seems to have been confined to a passive recipient of products at the end of the value chain. Innovation, in particular, has been conceived as an affair within and between firms. More recently, however, this traditional perception has been challenged. Consumers, in fact, are no longer seen as mere buyers of commodities but are more and more perceived (and perceive themselves) as competent users who contribute valuable knowledge to innovation processes and who have the power and capacity to intervene at all stages in the value creation process. Value co-creation has emerged as a new paradigm that signifies this transformation of the role of consumers. The prime aim of this chapter is to map out the evolving terrain of value co-creation and to draw conclusions for economic geographical inquiry into innovation processes.

The role of co-operatives as providers of goods and services, as in the industrial age, more recently became overshadowed by their potential as providers of social services. In the post-industrial or service society, co-operatives are found in a growing number of countries. Co-operative enterprises have a unique capacity to mobilize social capital and provide relational goods that neither public nor private for-profit providers demonstrate. This brings co-operative enterprises full-circle in terms of their historical political role as democratic pioneers, since they can now also contribute to reducing the growing democratic deficit. This chapter explores the political and social dimensions of co-operative enterprises that pursue multiple goals. It also introduces a dynamic model of co-operative development that can be fruitfully employed for analysing the social and political dilemmas faced by co-operative enterprises.

Hypertensive heart disease is a major cause of heart failure (HF) and mortality. Hypertension precedes HF occurrence in 75% of cases, and carries a sixfold increase in HF risk as compared to non-hypertensive individuals. Most importantly, a minority of patients survive 5 years after the onset of hypertensive HF. In hypertensive patients, the heart may present different patterns of adaptive remodelling: concentric remodelling, concentric hypertrophy, and eccentric hypertrophy. Although most hypertensive patients are at high risk of developing concentric hypertrophy, a growing proportion of subjects display a concentric-to-eccentric progression eventually leading to left ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction. Several factors including myocardial ischaemia, ethnicity, genetic background, history of diabetes, and blood pressure pattern may significantly influence the pathway from hypertension to left ventricular dilation. Patients with a concentric hypertrophy usually develop HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), whereas those with an eccentric (dilated) phenotype develop HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Lowering blood pressure has a striking effect in reducing the risk of HF. Although available antihypertensive drugs are all successful in lowering blood pressure, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blocker (ARBs), and diuretics are more effective than other drug classes in preventing HF. The combination of the neprilysin inhibitor sacubitril with the ARB valsartan (LCZ696) has recently been shown to be highly effective in reducing HF-related outcomes in hypertensive subjects. An individualized treatment scheme taking into account blood pressure levels, type of HF (HFpEF or HFrEF), and relevant co-morbidities (i.e. renal disease, diabetes) is currently the best approach to improve morbidity and mortality in hypertensive patients with HF.

This chapter examines the performance of several types of member-owned businesses since the financial crisis. It summarizes evidence for three financial co-operative sectors (European co-operative banks, the worldwide credit union sector, and the UK building societies), finding that they have been less risky, more stable, and on a range of indicators more successful than conventional investor-owned banks. It then examines the performance of retail consumer co-operatives, insurance mutuals, retailer-owned wholesalers, and employee-owned businesses. The wider benefits of having a significant member-owned sector are then considered. The conclusion is that economic resilience cannot be taken for granted: it has to be competed for in each industry sector, and the results will vary depending on the extent to which, in each sector, they can realize the ‘co-operative advantage’.

A substantial amount of development programming assumes that women have preferences or aptitudes that are more conducive to economic development. For example, conditional cash transfer programmes commonly deliver funding to female household heads, and many microcredit schemes focus on women’s savings groups. This chapter examines a public goods game in northern Liberia. Women contributed substantially more to a small-scale development project when playing with other women than in mixed-gender groups, where they contributed at about the same levels as men. We try to explain this composition effect using a structural model, survey responses, and a second manipulation. Results suggest women in the all-women group put more weight on co-operation regardless of the value of the public good, the fear of discovery, or the desire to match others’ behaviour. We conjecture that players have stronger motivation to signal public-spiritedness when primed to consider themselves representatives of the women of the community.

Mutuals and co-operatives have a distinct legal form which sets them apart from commercial companies. This chapter reviews the theoretical and empirical literature on the governance and performance effects of these differences, showing that it may be misleading to think of workers and customers as the owners of mutual enterprises, and that a more precise focus on the content of voice, income, and control rights in particular organizations is needed in order to assess the implications of different legal structures for economic performance. Empirical evidence suggests that, on average, worker and customer mutuals are more risk-averse and less profitable, but more sustainable, than commercial entities structured as companies limited by share capital. However, the mutual form does not guarantee that the firm is run in a more democratic and participative way. Mutualization, therefore, while useful in some contexts, should not be explored at the cost of wider corporate governance reforms.

ADHD and communication disorders are both common neurodevelopmental disorders that often co-occur. Comorbidity (i.e. co-occurrence or two or more disorders in a person) is potentially important for the theory, the underlying aetiology, treatment, and prevention of the disorders. This chapter first reviews the extent of co-occurrence between ADHD and various subtypes of communication disorders (language disorders, speech sound disorders, social pragmatic communication disorders), along with their clinical manifestation. Next, the extant evidence to support or refute various models of comorbidity (i.e. artifactual versus non-artifactual) is reviewed and critiqued. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the implications of co-occurring communication disorders and ADHD for the clinical assessment and management of ADHD.

Resumo:
State and federal courts are available to resolve disputes between co-religionist parties the same way that they are available to all Americans. Religious parties, however, are increasingly choosing to avoid resolving co-religionist conflicts of this kind in traditional courts, instead opting for private dispute resolution methods based on religious principles. This chapter explores this phenomenon by focusing on an argument put forth by Professors Michael A. Helfand and Barak D. Richman that state and federal courts can and should be more willing to engage in resolving co-religionist disputes. This chapter argues that one of the reasons for the increased demand for and importance of religious arbitration is that secular courts are poorly equipped to address such cases in ways that effectively uphold the understandings and expectations of religious parties engaged in co-religionist commercial conflicts.
