Texto completo da fonteThe formation of the West Alpine foreland Basin results from the alpine collision starting from ~34 Ma and the exhumation of the internal Alps during the Oligocene and the external Alps during the Miocene. Its development is divided into two distinct phases: an underfilled basin between the Eocene and the middle Rupelian and an overfilled basin from the upper Rupelian until the end of the Miocene. The evolution of the sedimentation and the source to sink framework during this second phase are still poorly documented. The aim of this work is to provide new data and a better understanding of the development of this basin. This manuscript consists of three main parts. The first part focuses on the reorganization of sediment routing between the Eocene and the lower Miocene. For the first time, a precise and detailed chronostratigraphic synthesis of all Oligocene basins in southeastern France is proposed through the acquisition of new field and biostratigraphic data, as well as the reinterpretation of subsurface data. This work has highlighted the crucial role of the Pyrenean-Provencal orogeny, which promotes the export of Alpine material outside the foredeep from the upper Rupelian and the ECRIS, which creates subsiding zones in the Rhone Valley from the Priabonian, influencing the rest of Oligo-Miocene sedimentation. The development of the orogenic wedge and the exhumation of the external Alps caused, particularly during the Chattian, a decrease in sedimentary inputs from the internal Alps into the Oligocene basins. This work has shown that the current sediment routing in southeastern France began to establish itself from the upper Oligocene, with the establishment of a long-lasting longitudinal system (paleo-Rhone) in the Rhone Valley flowing towards the Gulf of Lion and fed by two major transverse systems (paleo-Isere & paleo-Durance) ensuring connection with the western Alps. In the second part, detrital thermochronology results confirm that at 30 Ma, a new source appears in the sedimentary record of the Rupelian basins, originating from the northern internal Alps. This source almost disappears during the Chattian in the West Alpine Foreland Basin, replaced by a source from the internal zones of the south, related to the exhumation of the external Alps causing a migration of the drainage divide and a reorganization of the drainage network. The Miocene is characterized by continuous inputs from the internal Alps although sedimentation during this period is strongly influenced by the exhumation of the external Alps. Our results have shown that the basement of the external Alps becomes a source in the Tortonian. In the third part, we show that sediment fluxes decrease in the middle Aquitanian, up to the upper Burdigalian, a phenomenon common to the entire foreland basin, which we have linked to a decrease in sedimentary inputs associated with a reorganization of the drainage network related to the exhumation of the external Alps. The beginning of the Langhian is characterized by a very rapid increase in sediment volumes, with volumetric rates remaining very high until the lower Tortonian. We have linked this increase to two causes: a readjustment of the drainage network and the recycling of sediment from the northern Alpine foreland basin into the western Alpine foreland basin. The end of the Miocene is characterized by very low sediment volumes, implying that the West Alpine Foreland Basin has become a sediment transfer zone and that most Alpine material is now exported to the Gulf of Lion. Based on our results, we propose a palaeoenvironmental and source to sink reconstruction for the West Alpine Foreland Basin, comprising six phases between the Eocene and Upper Miocene, each corresponding to major changes in the sedimentary record

Texto completo da fonteThe studied area is located in the South-east of France in the Rhone River valley between the Alpine chain to the East and the European craton (Massif central) to the West. The Valence basin is a molassic foreland basin due to the orogenesis of the Alps during the Miocene with a surface area around 1600 km2. This foreland basin is filled with multilayered sands, sandstones, clays and marls with an average thickness of about 400 m. This basin is an important unconfined ground water resource for freshwater supply and agriculture. The use of geochemical and isotopic tools made it possible to understand the ground water flow system of this patrimonial resource. Indicators of groundwater time residence were defined. These tools showed the systematic presence of sectors marked by the upwelling of major circulation recognizable by old groundwater aged from few hundreds to several thousands years (14C less than 30 PMC, tritium free, high contents of magnesium, sodium and silicate) and infiltrated in altitude (18O and D depleted). Moreover, these sectors are located downstream the aquifer or localised under river valleys. Apart from these sectors, the groundwater is infiltrated in the vicinity and is described as Actual with the presence of tritium and sometimes of nitrate and pesticides. Only the conceptual groundwater flow diagram suggested by Hubbert (1940) and Tóth (1963) could explain this hydrochemical and isotopic groundwater behaviour. The relief and the geological structure of the basin govern the water flow run-offs. The groundwater flow velocity ranges between 5-10 m /y for the deepest flow and for the flow which circulates in the less permeable layers to 100-200 m /y for the shallowest flow and /or for the flow which circulates in the more permeable layers. The vulnerability of the Neogene aquifer was shown. An effective protection of this patrimonial resource should be developed from the groundwater flow model

Texto completo da fonteNew thermochronological data (AFT, ZHe, and ZFT) on the Belledonne and Grandes Rousses ECMs basement show a similar and relatively rapid exhumation dynamic around 18 Ma for all the External Cristalline Massifs. However, the exhumation of southern massifs (e.g., Oisans) could start earlier, from 25 Ma suggesting a diachronous exhumation along the Alpine Arc. This also suggests a progressive localization of deformations along the crustal ramps between ~25 and 18 Ma. Finally, the rapid exhumation starting at around 18 Ma seems to correspond to the limit of mega-sequences in the molassic basin. Field analysis, borehole data and seismic lines show that the basin was deformed as early as the Oligocene (25 Ma). This also allows the calculation of the sediment volumes preserved within the West Alpine Molassic Basin. Finally, a preliminary study of the source to sink in the West Alpine basins is approached from petro-detritic analyses, detrital thermochronology and calculation from the seismic lines. These results highlighted the progressive denudation of the Variscan crust of the upper plate whose detrital signal has been present since the Eo-Oligocene in the peri-alpine basins. The late Miocene appearance in the West Alpine Molassic basin of a tertiary thermochronological signal suggests a change in surface dynamics and/or a different sedimentary routing over time, but also significant differences compared to the basins located north of the Alps
