Texto completo da fonteIn this thesis, we consider a simple version of the spring-block model of Burridge-Knopoff for seismic faults, in which stick-slip instabilities have been numerically observed (phenomena corresponding to earthquakes). In the first part, we consider the version of this model introduced by Carlson and Langer, in which the friction law is of type velocity-weakening. This law is nonsmooth and multivalued at zero sliding velocity. As equations of motion, we obtain an infinite system of coupled differential inclusions. We prove, using the Lyapounov-Schmidt reduction, that there exist periodic travelling waves in this system in a limit of weak coupling between the masses. In the second part, we consider the model combined with a rate-and-state friction law, taking into account the ageing of the interface. The friction law is smooth but depends on an additive variable accounting for the state of the surface. In this part, we formally derive a Ginzburg-Landau equation as a modulation equation and prove that there exist small solutions in our system, that can be described by this equation in a sufficiently large time-scale, when the system lies at the threshold of instability

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis describes analysis and control approaches for the vibration and energy flow through periodic structures. The wave description is mainly used to address the structural dynamic problems considered in the thesis: forced response is calculated as the superposition of the wave motions; natural modes are understood as standing waves induced by the propagating waves that recover to the same phase after traveling a whole circle of the finite structure. One advantage of the wave description is that they can remarkably reduce the dimensions of structural dynamic problems. This feature is especially useful in mid- and high frequencies where directly computing the full Finite Element Method (FEM) model is rather time-consuming because of the enormous number of degree-of-freedoms. This thesis extends one widely used wave-based numerical tool termed Wave Finite Element Method (WFEM). The major improvements are the use of several Component Mode Synthesis (CMS) methods to accelerate the analysis for general waveguides with proportional damping or piezoelectric waveguides. The numerical error is reduced by using the proposed eigenvalue schemes, the left eigenvectors and the reduced wave basis. Another contribution is the multi-scale modeling approach for the built-up structures with both periodic and non-periodic parts. The main idea is to model the non-periodic parts by FEM, and model the periodic parts by WFEM. By interfacing different substructures as reflection coefficients or mechanical impedance, the response of the waveguide is calculated in terms of different scales. These two contributions extend WFEM to more complex structures and to more realistic models of the engineering applications.Another benefit of the wave perception is that it leads to new ideas for vibration control. In this thesis periodically distributed piezoelectric materials and shunt circuit are used to artificially modify the wave properties by electric impedance. A novel metrics termed the Wave Electromechanical Coupling Factor (WEMCF) is proposed, to quantitatively evaluate the coupling strength between the electric and mechanical fields during the passage of a wave. This factor can be post-processed from the wave characteristics obtained from WFEM through an energy formula. We show that WEMCF is strongly correlated to the best performance of the piezoelectric waveguide. Hence the design for the geometric and electric parameters can be done separately. An application is given, concerning the vibration reduction of a cantilever beam. WEMCF is used as an optimization objective during the geometric design, when the overall mass of the piezoelectric materials is constrained. Then the negative capacitance is used with a stability consideration to enlarge the Bragg band gap. The vibration is localized and efficiently dissipated by few boundary dampers. The wave-based design process yields several broadband, stable, lightweight and boundary condition insensitive solutions. Therefore, it is promising at mid- and high frequencies where exact modal information is difficult to access

Texto completo da fonteVibration and structure borne noise are generally undesirable phenomena for both the reliability and comfort issues. Many approaches to vibration control have been studied over the years, using various geometrical designs, damping materials, or active control strategies. In addition, lightening mechanical structures is a major challenge in terms of energy consumption, particularly for transport applications. In these combined contexts, the aim of this thesis is to develop new vibration control concepts by adapting the principle of Herschel-Quincke (HQ) filters, traditionally applied to plane acoustic waves in tubes, to the realm of elastic waves in beams and plates. In acoustics, HQ filters exploit the principle of a phase shift between two parallel tubes of varying lengths created from a primary tube, resulting in destructive interference and hence zero transmission at certain frequencies. The attractiveness of HQ filters lies in their capacity to provide multiple transmission loss peaks, presenting a viable alternative to traditional resonance-based approaches. This study extends this principle to bending waves by partitioning a thin beam into two segments of equal length but different thicknesses. The resulting disparity in bending stiffness induces the requisite phase difference, leading to wave filtering. This approach positions HQ filters as a promising solution for vibration and noise control applications without increasing the mass of the considered structure. First, the HQ principle for structural dynamics is theoretically analysed through wave based models considering non dispersive longitudinal or torsional waves and bending waves in beams. An experimental study also demonstrates the practical interest of this filtering technique. Then, the principle is extended to plates structures, leading to annular filters that may surround a vibration source and so isolate it from the rest of the plate. Third, some more sophisticated designs based on serial, parallel or periodic arrangements of structural HQ devices are proposed and analyzed to assess how they can optimize vibration filtering performance

Texto completo da fonteComplex wave systems can be classified in two categories, whatever the type of wave equation involved. When complexity is induced by the geometry of boundaries one speaks of Wave Chaos. In the case of heterogeneous media complexity is due to multiple scattering. Microwave 2D cavities are ideal model systems to investigate both regimes on a macroscopic scale. In the Wave Chaos regime, a first experimental study of a rectangular cavity perturbed by a point-like metallic defect. Using a semiclassical approach based on periodic orbits, we provide evidence for the contributions of diffractive orbits in the length spectrum. Through the use of open strongly disordered dielectric media, the observation of 2D localized modes, in the sense of Anderson, is performed. We give details about the experimental setup and protocol to produce the spatial pattern of a localized mode. We experimentally demonstrate that the spectral widths of localized modes, related to leakage at the boundary, exponentially decrease with the system size. We also show that this decrease is controlled by the largest localization lengths
