Resumo:
Forestmodellers have long faced the problem of selecting an appropriate mathematical model to describe tree ontogenetic or size-shape empirical relationships for tree species. A common practice is to develop many models (or a model pool) that include different functional forms, and then to select the most appropriate one for a given data set. However, this process may impose subjective restrictions on the functional form. In this process, little attention is paid to the features (e.g. asymptote and inflection point rather than asymptote and nonasymptote) of different functional forms, and to the intrinsic curve of a given data set. In order to find a better way of comparing and selecting the growth models, this paper describes and analyses the characteristics of the Schnute model. This model has both flexibility and versatility that have not been used in forestry. In this study, the Schnute model was applied to different data sets of selected forest species to determine their functional forms. The results indicate that the model shows some desirable properties for the examined data sets, and allows for discerning the different intrinsic curve shapes such as sigmoid, concave and other curve shapes. Since no suitable functional form for a given data set is usually known prior to the comparison of candidate models, it is recommended that the Schnute model be used as the first step to determine an appropriate functional form of the data set under investigation in order to avoid using a functional form a priori.

Resumo:
Bacterial survival upon sharp fluctuations of environmental parameters and exposure to lethal doses of stressors (antibiotics, disinfectants, heat shock, and others) is ensured by the use of different strategies of resistance, an important place among which is occupied by the forms with reduced or stopped metabolism, antibiotic tolerant (AT) persister (P) cells, anabiotic dormant forms (DFs), and viable but non-culturable (VBNC) cells. Elucidating the role of these forms of bacterial resistance to an impact of chemical and biological toxicants and physical stressors is of great fundamental and practical interest. The aim of this research was to study the dynamics of the resistance forms in bacteria developing in biofilms and, for comparison in liquid media, upon exposure to lethal doses of antibiotics and heat shock (80 °C, 15 min). In the trials, the experimental model of the development of monospecies and binary forms of bacterial biofilms including contaminants of meat products (eight strains of genera Pseudomonas, Escherichia, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, and Kocuria) on the fiberglass filters was used. It was established that survival of populations in the presence of lethal doses of antibiotics and upon heating was ensured by persister cells forming in bacterial populations and, at the late stages of the development of biofilm or planktonic cultures (28 days of incubation), by anabiotic DFs. With that, the number of thermoresistant (TR) DFs (103–104 CFU/mL) in dying biofilms (28 days) developing in the standard conditions (composition and volume of a medium, pH, growth temperature) weakly depended on the bacterial taxonomic status. This study demonstrates the heterogeneity of DF populations of biofilm bacterial cultures in terms of the depth of dormancy, as a result of which the number of thermoresistant DFs after heating can exceed their total number before heating (due to the effect of DF revival, resuscitation). When studying the dynamics of TR cells and P cells in bacterial biofilm and planktonic cultures, it was found that their number (CFU/mL) in populations decreased up to the absence of TR cells and P cells on the 21st day of growth and was restored on the 28th day of growth. The revealed phenomenon can be explained only by cardinal changes in the ultrastructural organization of cells, namely, cytoplasm vitrification due to a sharp decrease in an amount of free water in a cell, which, according to the results obtained, occurs in the period between the 21st and 28th days of incubation. A high degree of correlation between the number of AT cells and TR cells (0.5–0.92) confirms the hypothesis that regards P cells as precursors of DFs.

This study aims at developing and empirically testing an integrated model incorporating the factors that form university image in Syria. The study used a quantitative survey of students at Syrian universities. A pre-test of the questionnaire was undertaken using a convenient sample of 40 students. Thereafter, a sample of 259 students was used to test the model using structural equation modeling. The findings suggest word of mouth and faculty-individualized attention, one of service quality dimensions, as the antecedents of university image. Moreover, the findings reveal a positive effect of faculty-individualized attention and support staff helpfulness, as service quality dimensions, on student satisfaction. It is also found that student satisfaction positively affect word of mouth. This study is expected to help Syrian universities understand the key factors contributing to university image formation, and, therefore, strengthen their positions in the market. This study comes to be one of the first studies that attempt to understand how university image is formed.

Resumo:
The intention of this study was to understand more fully the process of creating musical composition. As a means to to this I created a compositional model, "Maya's Words", a conscious experiment which utilised the techniques I discovered and codified from children's compositions. By utilising rhe model as a working tool and the information extracted from the children's works I was able to draw together my own theories and observations concerning the process of musical composition and how it works. Within this study I have also examined my own process of musical composition and drawn, in a limited way, upon my work on the methodology behind the compositional procedures of composer Elisabeth Lutyens. The way in which the children used their own musical ideas in a flexible and original manner illustrated a mental state that seemed to be able to grasp thoughts from anywhere, without reference, for example, to tradition or style. This dexterity brought to my attention the notion that the children were using fragments of ideas/music/sound and integrating them into their own compositions. In the compositional model for this study I chose to compose in a way that utilised information from this study in many manifestations but it also had to be an organic growth as a means to be real and for me to have a true input into it a sa composer. It also had to incorporate many of the study elements into it otherwise it would not be a conscious experiment. The two forces here, for me haave worked in tandem as the flexibility of approach used by the children has allowed me to work in a flexible way in this compositional model and yet the uncomplicated way in which the children evaluated their own progressions has had a profound influence on me too and provided me with a method of self-evaluation which does not create self-inflicted damage to my own feelings about my composition. I hope in the same way that this study will allow composers a freedon of perspective that will open for them a new understanding of musical composition.

Allick, Steven. "The common forms of contemporary videogames : a proposed content analysis model". Thesis, Teesside University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10149/254616.

Resumo:
The aim of this thesis was to investigate trope usage in videogames, including the emergence of undiscovered ‘videogame’ tropes, and to create a new model for videogame categorisation using these tropes. This model serves to complement genre as a means of distilling videogame contents. The investigative work formed two parts, initially considering how videogames use existing rhetorical tropes such as metaphor as expressive and communicative devices and secondly to analyse videogames as a source of shared literary tropes. Each shared literary trope was validated as a common form of expression (referred to simply as 'common form'), where its presence was proven in a substantial sample of videogames. Common forms were gathered through a wide-ranging investigation of ten mainstream genres one at a time and in isolation to arrive at a pool of genre-specific common forms. The most closely related forms combined, with the help of relationship modelling techniques. A set of common forms capable of representing the contents of any videogame was reached. The result is a powerful hierarchical content model allowing a game to be described in terms of its common form usage profile. Common forms can effectively describe games which span several genres and differentiates between games which appear similar on the surface e.g. within the same genre hence aiding effective classification. Common Forms were proven to exist on a number of different hierarchies ranging from those specific to a particular game, to a game type (genre) and even to those which are universal and hence can be observed within any modern videogame. Finally, it was possible to see the very core or 'heart' of the functioning videogame, the never-ending competition between player resources such as energy, ammunition or shields, the 'player status' and the threats, challenges or obstacles the game's systems throw at the player, the 'game status'. The model does have considerable potential for application in educational settings such as college and university game development or appraisal classes and further development and testing would provide an effective tool for industry use.

Sevegnani, Martina. "The role of Parkin R274W in genetic forms of Parkinson’s disease". Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trento, 2022. https://hdl.handle.net/11572/361162.

Resumo:
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the progressive loss of nigral dopaminergic (DA) neurons and the formation of Lewy bodies. Despite most cases being idiopathic, mutations in several genes have been implicated in familial forms of PD. In particular, recessive mutations in Parkin gene (PARK2) are the most common cause of young-onset inherited parkinsonism. Parkin is an E3 ubiquitin ligase involved both in the control of mitochondrial turnover and in the proteasome-dependent degradation of proteins, two pathways that have been causally linked to PD development. Although initially described as a recessive disorder, experimental evidence suggests that heterozygous Parkin mutations can exert dominant toxic effects causing neurodegeneration. In 2012, Ruffmann and colleagues identified the first pure heterozygous R275W Parkin patient with clinical features of typical late-onset PD and a diffuse Lewy body pathology. To assess the impact of R275W Parkin, we generated the first mouse line carrying Parkin R274W mutation, which corresponds to the human R275W substitution. Unlike Parkin deficient mouse models, both homo- and heterozygous R274W mice show an age-related motor impairment, degeneration of dopaminergic neurons and neuroinflammation. We detected structural and functional mitochondrial abnormalities related to PARIS-PGC-1α axis impairment in R274W+/+ mice brain and skeletal muscle. Strikingly, we noticed signs of protein aggregation in both R274W+/- and +/+ mice, while we identified bona fide Lewy bodies only in the midbrain of heterozygous mice. Additionally, in the brains of R274W mice we discovered overt abnormalities of the glymphatic system, the main route for brain waste clearance. Our preliminary observations suggest that Parkin influences aquaporin-4 (AQP4) localization. Altogether, our data suggest that R274W Parkin substitution behaves both as a loss ofand a gain of toxic function, highlighting a link between Parkin dominant toxicity and age-dependent motor impairment, neuroinflammation, DA neurons loss, glymphatic system dysfunctions and α-synuclein aggregation in vivo. Hence, our study provides a new robust mouse model to explore PD pathogenesis and glymphatic dysfunctions, offering the possibility to test novel therapeutic strategies with great predictivity.

Kamshad, Kimya Moghadam. "The dynamics of firm growth and failure under alternative forms of ownership". Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1993. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1249/.

Resumo:
This thesis extends the literature on the dynamics of firm growth and failure by testing the robustness of past findings for capitalist firms to alternative ownership structures. While the theoretical results are altered by the internal organisation of the firm, the empirical findings are unchanged. This suggests that the theoretical models place excessive emphasis on the organisational structure and inadequate emphasis on more basic and fundamental factors affecting firm growth. The thesis applies the learning models of growth to the case of the Illyrian labour managed firm, where members maximise profits per worker. The critical efficiency-size relationship is indeterminate under labour management. Thus, the majority of the clear cut empirical predictions of the model for profit maximisation no longer hold. Three possible explanations for the breakdown of the results are examined. One explanation is that the Illyrian model is overly simplistic and does not accurately reflect the actual behaviour of cooperatives. This is rejected using an institutional structure model of the French producer cooperative which yields predictions which are remarkably similar to those of the Illyrian model. The second explanation considered is that the growth and survival of cooperatives in fact substantially differs from capitalist firms. This explanation is rejected in the empirical section which tests the actual growth and survival relationships using a dataset of French producer cooperatives. The estimated survival-size relation is convexly positive and the growth-size relation convexly negative, exactly as they have been found previously for conventional firms. The final remaining explanation is that the theoretical models are structured so as to overemphasize the internal structure of the firm to the neglect of more generic factors affecting growth and survival. This is accepted in a final section which proposes new directions for theoretical research on the growth and survival of all firms.

Scotti, Simone. "Applications of the error theory using Dirichlet forms". Phd thesis, Université Paris-Est, 2008. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00349241.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
This thesis is devoted to the study of the applications of the error theory using Dirichlet forms. Our work is split into three parts. The first one deals with the models described by stochastic differential equations. After a short technical chapter, an innovative model for order books is proposed. We assume that the bid-ask spread is not an imperfection, but an intrinsic property of exchange markets instead. The uncertainty is carried by the Brownian motion guiding the asset. We find that spread evolutions can be evaluated using closed formulae and we estimate the impact of the underlying uncertainty on the related contingent claims. Afterwards, we deal with the PBS model, a new model to price European options. The seminal idea is to distinguish the market volatility with respect to the parameter used by traders for hedging. We assume the former constant, while the latter volatility being an erroneous subjective estimation of the former. We prove that this model anticipates a bid-ask spread and a smiled implied volatility curve. Major properties of this model are the existence of closed formulae for prices, the impact of the underlying drift and an efficient calibration strategy. The second part deals with the models described by partial differential equations. Linear and non-linear PDEs are examined separately. In the first case, we show some interesting relations between the error and wavelets theories. When non-linear PDEs are concerned, we study the sensitivity of the solution using error theory. Except when exact solution exists, two possible approaches are detailed: first, we analyze the sensitivity obtained by taking "derivatives" of the discrete governing equations. Then, we study the PDEs solved by the sensitivity of the theoretical solutions. In both cases, we show that sharp and bias solve linear PDE depending on the solution of the former PDE itself and we suggest algorithms to evaluate numerically the sensitivities. Finally, the third part is devoted to stochastic partial differential equations. Our analysis is split into two chapters. First, we study the transmission of an uncertainty, present on starting conditions, on the solution of SPDE. Then, we analyze the impact of a perturbation of the functional terms of SPDE and the coefficient of the related Green function. In both cases, we show that the sharp and bias verify linear SPDE depending on the solution of the former SPDE itself

PHMSA report. This project developed and validated tools to assist in integrity assessment and management in both forms of SCC. Because the understanding that underlies integrity management tools was most comprehensive for high-pH SCC, development targeted NN-pH SCC, with work on high pH SCC being more application-oriented. To broaden the utility of the deliverables, this project targeted technology in the context of generic modules applicable to both forms of cracking, recognizing their key difference lies in the mechanisms of cracking and how that impacts their kinetics and pipeline susceptibility. For the high-pH scenario, the work was focused on tools to facilitate the evaluation of factors that drive day to day integrity-management decisions. In contrast, work for NN-pH situations targeted was at the level of understanding the mechanisms that underlie the evolution of hydrogen involved with this form of SCC. Some key conclusions include: a mechanism for NN-pH SCC was developed and modeled in a fundamental framework, and found to produce hydrogen in sufficient quantity to support crack nucleation and growth under typical pipeline service conditions; a spectrum of reversible environments exist that sandwich NN-pH SCC between corrosion at lower pH levels and high-pH SCC that bounds the high end, each of corrosion, high-pH SCC, and NN-pH SCC is possible either individually or in association with the same crack; conditions driving NN-pH SCC were found to be consistent with temperature conditions throughout the United States. A host of other conclusions and recommendations also were developed.

Yu, Wusheng, Thomas Hertel, Paul Preckel e James Eales. Projecting World Food Demand Using Alternative Demand Systems. GTAP Working Paper, fevereiro de 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.21642/gtap.wp21.

Resumo:
Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models are increasingly being used to project world food markets in order to support forward-looking policy analysis. Such projections hinge critically on the underlying functional form for representing consumer demand. Simple functional forms can lead to unrealistic projections by failing to capture changes in income elasticities of demand. We adopt as our benchmark the recently introduced AIDADS demand system and compare it with several alternative demand systems currently in widespread use in CGE models. This comparison is conducted in the context of projections for disaggregated global food demand using a global CGE model. We find that AIDADS represents a substantial improvement, particularly for the rapidly growing developing countries. For these economies, the most widely used demand systems tend to over-predict future food demands, and hence overestimate future production and import requirements for agricultural products.

The article discusses the physical model of the implicative form of Consciousness in the form of a holographic wave matrix, for which the material basis is directly the phase environment that fills the entire Space. It is shown that a similar form of Consciousness that exists outside the human brain can be represented as a kind of software shell that controls all forms of matter by implementing a fractal cyclic iterative algorithm. The condition for the completion of each iterative cycle at each scale level is the observance of the laws of symmetry that ensure the survival of the object in the process of copying-incarnation.

Resumo:
As economists are increasingly working across disciplines, they are assessing alternative mathematical formulations to more closely align with the results from these disciplines. Two of the most widely used functional forms in quantitative economic analysis are the constant-elasticity-of-substitution (CES) and constant-elasticity-of-transformation (CET) functions. However, neither functional form preserves volume additivity, which may be a desirable feature in a number of contexts including labor and land allocation, energy systems, etc. This paper explores two alternatives to the ubiquitous CES and CET formulations, which have many of the same characteristics in terms of ease of implementation, but also preserve volume additivity. It illustrates some of the properties of the so-called additive forms of the CES and CET and assesses the impacts of switching to the additive CET in the context of land-use allocation in the Envisage model.

The Polish film system is characterized by a variety of forms. Michał Zabłocki, the author of the comprehensive study of the «Organization of the production of feature film in Poland», isolates two models of world cinema: a producer and a producer – director. The first one features the dominant role of the producer, which means the person who is responsible for the work of all the film departments – direction, cinematography, production management, scenography and costume design. The second one, the model which is still the most popular in Poland, assumes close cooperation between the producer and the director.

Natural Resources Canada, in partnership with the Global Earthquake Model Foundation, has prepared a public Canadian Seismic Risk Model to support disaster risk reduction efforts across industry and all levels of government, and to aid in Canada's adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. Developing this model has involved the creation of a national exposure inventory, Canadian specific fragility and vulnerability curves, and adjustment of the Canadian Seismic Hazard Model which forms the basis for the seismic provisions of the National Building Code of Canada. Using the Global Earthquake Model Foundation's OpenQuake Engine (OQ), risk modelling is completed using both deterministic and probabilistic risk calculations, under baseline and simulated retrofit conditions. Output results are available in all settled regions of Canada, at the scale of a neighbourhood or smaller. We report on expected shaking damage to buildings, financial losses, fatalities, and other impacts such as housing disruption and the generation of debris. This paper documents the technical details of the modelling approach including a description of novel datasets in use, as well as preliminary results for a magnitude 9.0 earthquake on the Cascadia megathrust and nation-wide 500 year expected probabilistic losses. These kinds of results, such as earthquake scenario impacts, loss exceedance curves, and annual average losses, provide a quantitative base of evidence for decision making at local, regional, and national levels.

Resumo:
Social indexicality and enregisterment are basic notions of a theoretical model elaborated in the United States, the aim of which is to describe the relationship between the use of language variation and patterns of social behavior at the level of formal classification. This analytical approach is characterized by focusing on the interrelation of social performance and language awareness. In my contribution, I want to show how this modern methodology can give new impetus to the study of today’s problem areas in Europe, such as migration and language or urban life and language use. In particular, I am interested in the case of Catalan, which has been studied for some time by proponents of the North American enregisterment theory. This leads me to indicate that explicit forms of social conduct, such as language shift or the emblematic use of linguistic forms, can be interpreted with regard to the social indexicality of Catalan. I thus analyze them in a way which shows that authenticity and integration in Catalan society can be achieved to a considerable extent by practicing forms of linguistic enregisterment.
