The problem that is examined is how to make courses from the product of Academy World "Kunskapsbanken" to be suitable for accessing from a smart phone. "Kunskapsbanken is Web product where customer take courses over the Internet. To determine the suitability of each course page three Factors:  Page size  Transmission rate  Information presentation technique are examined of how they are configured and then checked against three criteria's:  15 second criteria  Page size criteria  Comparison criteria If the factors are within the limits of the criteria's the course page in question is suitable. All pages are examined according to the mentioned procedure individually Seven of seventeen tested course pages in the course "Euron i din vardag" where approved according to the comparison criteria. Three were approved with exception, which means that some part of the page was not approved. With a 9.6 kbps connection three pages were approved, with a 28.8 kbps connection nine pages were approved and with a 43.2 kbps connection nine pages were approved according to the 15 second and page size criteria. Important things to find out are the technical features of the smart phone(s) which are suppose to access the pages e.g. browser version, support for presentation techniques HTML, WML and scripts and in what way it is connected to the Internet. The use of client side scripting should not be relied on, there should be an alternative way to the functionality it provides e.g. server side scripting. Frames should be avoided, when making a Web page for mobile accessing.

In addition to the problems that may occur in the Internet, the people who test mobile internet services confront additional challenges due to the wireless environment. If something goes wrong, it is very problematic for a tester to determine exactly where the error occurred and the reason why it occurred. Is it the software in the telephone that does not work properly, is the GPRS link stable, is the core network of the Internet working as it should, or is there something wrong at the server? The staff at Sony Ericsson has major difficulties determining where the origin of a problem is. They often simply know that something is not working. The major effort is often to detect the source of the actual problem rather than solving it. The PlayNow service provided by Sony Ericsson will be used as a reference service in this master’s thesis project. The PlayNow service is currently used for distributing ring signals. It is built on Internet standards, but depends on GSM’s specific features both for distribution and for e-commerce which makes it hard to test using existing web test tools. This Master’s Thesis examines the difficulties in establishing robust IP traffic links between a server and a mobile telephone. It examines the entire communication path between the mobile telephone and the server, and focus on how to detect (potential) errors. Within this project, development of a test tool is included. It supports features necessary for testing the reference service PlayNow. This report covers many different technologies within the mobile internet such as GSM, GPRS, and mobile IP. Moreover, the normal infrastructure of the Internet will also be considered; as well as how the different parts interact in an environment consisting of a mobile Internet with GPRS. A major part of the project has been evaluation of the communication link between a mobile device and a server. Additionally, some efforts have focused on developing the new test tool.

Mobility is becoming an integrating part of todays Internet of Things, as many applications such as wildlife monitoring or target tracking in the battlefield cannot be done only with the help of static nodes. The goal of this thesis is to provide new communication architecture articulated around providing mobility support in Low Power and Lossy Networks (LLNs). First we analyzed from a theoretical point of view the IPv6 address auto-configuration with all optimizations made in Neighbor Discovery Optimization for IPv6 over 6LoWPAN. This step is of crucial importance for protocols that offer mobility support in IP networks, such as MIPv6. Our findings, increased message size that leads to fragmentation and high energy consumption for routers that are involved in Neighbor Discovery message exchange, have lead us to use the IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) in order to provide mobility support. RPL is build from ground up with respect to LLN requirements. Our second contribution enhanced RPL operations to support mobility management. Finally, we proposed a cross-layer protocol – Mobility Triggered-RPL – that leverages actions from the X-Machiavel preamble sampling MAC protocol into RPL

In this master thesis we investigate Mobile Internet with the help of a user perspective and discuss the problems of Mobile Internet today. As the Internet revolution evolves into the Mobile Internet revolution the need for usable and desirable wireless services is increasing. Designing web based services for mobile devices and mobile users is significantly different than designing web based services for desktop use. Not only are there differences in the underlying technology but also, and perhaps most important, in the way people use the services. Our main purpose in this thesis is to investigate the occurrence of Mobile Internet from a user’s perspective, to present a definition of Mobile Internet and provide a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. The main objective is to present a theoretical framework regarding Mobile Internet usage and to investigate which user related factors to consider when developing services adapted for mobile use.

Can the socio-economic logic of the club can be apply somewhere else than in the cablo-distribution in Quebec? Answering this question can make use better understand convergence markets of mobile internet investigating users and industrial clubs. Our main hypothesis are the lack of club (for the antiope system), user club as a toy to limitate users autonomy by prescribing uses, industrials club as organizer of the sector according the size and , specialization. Users clubs are made of two functions: "fidelisation" and "to make user to pay". For the industrial clubs, the functions are federation, coalition and normalisation. Elements confirm the importance of the Club socio-economical logic and present four fundamental aspects: the supply logic (a leadership in a membership), the subscription, the traceability and a limitation of the costs

Mobile Internet is currently considered as the future for the Internet. Apparently the number of mobile handset sold as compared to desktop PCs is noticeable. These hints depict the potential of mobile Internet and the future market strongly relying on mobile devices. But at the same time mobile internet users are growing slower in numbers. Particularly in market where the internet access is very simple through computers, mobile internet users seems not very enthusiastic to use internet on mobile phones. Author of this study supposed on the basis of literature findings that this lack of interest is due to an unsatisfactory mobile internet user experience. This thesis work is an effort into the complex area of mobile internet and shed some light on how to improve user experience for mobile internet. The main focus of this research work is the identification of hurdles/challenges for mobile internet user experience and explores the concepts present in academia. In order to understand it properly, the author performed a systematic literature review (SLR). The overall objective of SLR is to examine the existing work on thesis study topic. This in depth study of literature revealed that mobile internet user experience is categorized into aspects, elements and factors by different researchers and considered as a central part of mobile internet user experience. There are few other factors that affect and make this job complicated and difficult such as usage context and user expectations. In this work current problems of the mobile internet user experience are identified systematically that never happened before and then discussed in a way that provide a better understanding of mobile internet user experience to academia. To fulfill the aim and objectives author of this study conducted the detailed systematic review analysis of the empirical studies from year 1998 to 2012. The research studies were identified from the most authentic databases that are scientifically and technically peer reviewed such as Scopus, Evillage, IEEE Xplore, ACM digital library. From SLR results, we have found different aspects, elements, factors and challenges of mobile internet user experience. The most common challenge faced by user and reported in academia was screen size, input facilities, usability of services, and data traffic costs. The information attained during this thesis study through academia (literature) is presented in a descriptive way which reflects that there is an emerging trend of using internet on mobile devices. Through this study author presented the influencing perspective of mobile internet user experience that needs to be considered for the advancement of mobile internet. The presented work adds contribution in a sense as to the best of knowledge no systematic review effort has been done in this area.

A key objective for 3G wireless networks, such as the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), is the explicit support for data communications for mobile users. Today, the dominant transport protocol in the Internet is the Transport Control Protocol (TCP). Since TCP was not tailored for wireless networks, there are some performance issues occurring when TCP traffic is transferred over a UMTS radio link. In this paper, the characteristics of TCP and UMTS are specified and the problems of TCP over UMTS dedicated channels (DCHs) are analyzed. The problem is high delays implying low utilization of allocated resources for small file transfers or due to packet losses. High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA)’s potential to solve the problem is studied. Since in HSDPA, High-Speed Downlink shared channel (HS-DSCH) is introduced as an alternative of DCH on downlink packet access, a model of HS-DSCH is built and simulations are performed in order to compare its TCP performance with DCH. The focus is on studying retransmission delay and Block Error Rate (BLER) targets. Some scheduling methods are also compared. The results indicate that HS-DSCH gives better TCP performance than a DCH, and that advanced scheduling methods gives similar result as round robin if there are packet losses. Moreover, a somewhat surprising result is found regarding fast retransmission and channel utilization for increasing BLER targets.

Doutoramento em Informática (MAP-I)
The constant evolution in new technologies that support the way our devices are able to connect, as well the way we use available on-line services and capabilities, has created a set of unprecedented new challenges that motivated the development of a recent research trend known as the Future Internet. In this research trend, new architectural aspects are being developed which, through the restructure of underlying core aspects composing the Internet, reshapes it in a way capable of not only facing these new challenges, but also preparing it to tackle tomorrow’s new set of complex issues. Key aspects belonging to this set of challenges are heterogeneous networking environments composed by di↵erent kinds of wireless access networks, the evergrowing change from peer-to-peer (P2P) to video as the most used kind of traffic in the Internet, the orchestration of Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios exploiting Machine-to-Machine (M2M) interactions, and the usage of Information-Centric Networking (ICN). This thesis presents a novel framework able to simultaneous tackle these challenges, empowering connectivity procedures and entities with a middleware acting as an advanced control management mechanism. This control management mechanism brings together both high-level entities (such as application services, mobility management entities, routing operations, etc.) with the lower layer components (e.g., link layers, sensor devices, actuators), allowing for a joint optimization of the underlying connectivity and operational procedures. Results highlight not only the flexibility of the mechanisms composing the framework, but also their ability in providing performance increases when compared with other specific purpose solutions, while allowing a wider range of scenarios and deployment possibilities.

Resumo:
The Internet of things (IoT) represents a new era of networking, it envisions the Internet of the future where objects or “Things” are seamlessly connected to the Internet providing various services to the community. Countless applications can benefit from these new services and some of them have already come to life especially in healthcare and smart environments. The full realization of the IoT can only be achieved by having relevant standards that enable the integration of these new services with the Internet. The IEEE 802.15.4, 6LoWPAN and IPv6 standards define the framework for wireless sensor networks (WSN) to run using limited resources but still connect to the Internet and use IP addresses. The Internet engineering task force (IETF) developed a routing protocol for low-power and lossy networks (LLN) to provide bidirectional connectivity throughout the network, this routing protocol for LLNs (RPL) was standardized in RFC6550 in 2012 making it the standard routing protocol for IoT. With all the bright features and new services that come with the futuristic IoT applications, new challenges present themselves calling for the need to address them and provide efficient approaches to manage them. One of the most crucial challenges that faces data routing is the presence of mobile nodes, it affects energy consumption, end-to-end delay, throughput, latency and packet delivery ratio (PDR). This thesis addresses mobility issues from the data routing point of view, and presents a number of enhancements to the existing protocols in both mesh-under and route-over routing approaches, along with an introduction to relevant standards and protocols, and a literature review of the state of the art in research. A dynamic cluster head election protocol (DCHEP) is proposed to improve network availability and energy efficiency for mobile WSNs under the beacon-enabled IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The proposed protocol is developed and simulated using CASTALIA/OMNET++ with a realistic radio model and node behaviour. DCHEP improves the network availability and lifetime and maintains cluster hierarchy in a proactive manner even in a mobile WSN where all the nodes including cluster heads (CHs) are mobile, this is done by dynamically switching CHs allowing nodes to act as multiple backup cluster heads (BCHs) with different priorities based on their residual energy and connectivity to other clusters. DCHEP is a flexible and scalable solution targeted for dense WSNs with random mobility. The proposed protocol achieves an average of 33% and 26% improvement to the availability and energy efficiency respectively compared with the original standard. Moving to network routing, an investigation of the use of RPL in dynamic networks is presented to provide an enhanced RPL for different applications with dynamic mobility and diverse network requirements. This implementation of RPL is designed with a new dynamic objective-function (D-OF) to improve the PDR, end-to-end delay and energy consumption while maintaining low packet overhead and loop-avoidance. A controlled reverse-trickle timer is proposed based on received signal strength identification (RSSI) readings to maintain high responsiveness with minimum overhead, and consult the objective function when a movement or inconsistency is detected to help nodes make an informed decision. Simulations are done using Cooja with different mobility scenarios for healthcare and animal tracking applications considering multi-hop routing. The results show that the proposed dynamic RPL (D-RPL) adapts to different mobility scenarios and has a higher PDR, slightly lower end-to-end delay and reasonable energy consumption compared to related existing protocols. Many recent applications require the support of mobility and an optimised approach to efficiently handle mobile nodes is essential. A game scenario is formulated where nodes compete for network resources in a selfish manner, to send their data packets to the sink node. Each node counts as a player in the noncooperative game. The optimal solution for the game is found using the unique Nash equilibrium (NE) where a node cannot improve its pay-off function while other players use their current strategy. The proposed solution aims to present a strategy to control different parameters of mobile nodes (or static nodes in a mobile environment) including transmission rate, timers and operation mode in order to optimize the performance of RPL under mobility in terms of PDR, throughput, energy consumption and end-to-end-delay. The proposed solution monitors the mobility of nodes based on RSSI readings, it also takes into account the priorities of different nodes and the current level of noise in order to select the preferred transmission rate. An optimised protocol called game-theory based mobile RPL (GTM-RPL) is implemented and tested in multiple scenarios with different network requirements for Internet of Things applications. Simulation results show that in the presence of mobility, GTM-RPL provides a flexible and adaptable solution that improves throughput whilst maintaining lower energy consumption showing more than 10% improvement compared to related work. For applications with high throughput requirements, GTM-RPL shows a significant advantage with more than 16% improvement in throughput and 20% improvement in energy consumption. Since the standardization of RPL, the volume of RPL-related research has increased exponentially and many enhancements and studies were introduced to evaluate and improve this protocol. However, most of these studies focus on simulation and have little interest in practical evaluation. Currently, six years after the standardization of RPL, it is time to put it to a practical test in real IoT applications and evaluate the feasibility of deploying and using RPL at its current state. A hands-on practical testing of RPL in different scenarios and under different conditions is presented to evaluate its efficiency in terms of packet delivery ratio (PDR), throughput, latency and energy consumption. In order to look at the current-state of routing in IoT applications, a discussion of the main aspects of RPL and the advantages and disadvantages of using it in different IoT applications is presented. In addition to that, a review of the available research related to RPL is conducted in a systematic manner, based on the enhancement area and the service type. Finally, a comparison of related RPL-based protocols in terms of energy efficiency, reliability, flexibility, robustness and security is presented along with conclusions and a discussion of the possible future directions of RPL and its applicability in the Internet of the future.

Network bandwidth and server capacity are gradually becoming overloaded due to the high demand and rapid evolution of high quality multimedia services over the Internet. Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is among the multimedia services that demand more of network and server resources, especially with the emergence of Mobile IPTV. It is imperative for the service providers to maintain good quality management services in order to satisfy their clients. To guarantee the required quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) in IPTV, the server must have the required capacity and resources to serve all the clients’ requests. The flexibility of IPTV services which provide users with the ability to stream multimedia content at anytime and anywhere they want, makes the demand for video-on-demand (VoD) services higher. However, the server bandwidth capacity is limited, and as such the numerous requests from the clients may exhaust all the available bandwidth depending on the number of requests at a given time, which may lead to the poor QoS and QoE. In this research, a new algorithm called Intelligent Routing Algorithm for Mobile IPTV (IRA-MIPTV) is proposed. The algorithm combined features and advantages of Internet Protocol (IP), Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) characteristics and Content Delivery Network (CDN) based network architecture to improve on the QoS and QoE in mobile IPTV. The proposed algorithm is aimed at reducing total dependency on the server by the mobile nodes. The algorithm intelligently learns the best server or client to serve an incoming service request depending on the available server capacity and the number of requests received at a point in time. The routing decision is made by the Designated Server (DS) that selects and reroutes a request to the most appropriate server or client. The novelty of this research work can simply be identified as the designing, developing and evaluating an Intelligent Routing Algorithm for mobile ITPV (IRA-MIPTV) that intelligently learns and select a reflective server or client to serve a particular service request on behalf of the server during high service demand. The selection depends on the server available bandwidth, load and proximity. The proposed algorithm also dynamically adjusts to server failure by assigning the role of designated server to the backup server and re-elect another backup server to guarantee service delivery at all times. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, different simulation tests were conducted using OPNET/Riverbed Modeler 18.0. A typical IPTV network, where packets are delivered over IP, and the proposed algorithm were modelled and incorporated into the Modeler. For the study to reflect more on real situations, live video programme was streamed using VLC media player. The packet’s size and packet inter-arrival time data were collected and used in the simulation’s environment. After conducting a series of simulation tests, the results showed that the proposed algorithm outperforms the normal IPTV system in server load reduction, high throughput and low amount of end-to-end delay, as well as adaptability and robustness. The results also showed that the efficiency of the proposed algorithm increases as the number of clients increase. It also confirmed that the algorithm reduces the server overload during high service request periods by using clients to serve some of the incoming service requests on behalf of the server. The algorithm produced low server and network load, low end-to-end delay, high throughput, adaptability and robustness.

The Mobile INTernet router (MINT for short) is a core element of the Walkstation II Project. Its purpose is to link via a radio resource one or many mobile hosts, the latter are either independant or connected together forming a isolated subnetwork. The MINT has a communication device consisting of an Ethernet Controller and a radio tranceiver, currently working at 2GHz. The RadioNet Driver, a device driver is used control these pieces of hardware. Progress has been slow. Initial work involved exploring the MINT's programming environment (cross-compiler, debugger) and doing some experiments with the MINTs. Next, a dummy RadioNet driver was written to become familiar with programming in the (SunOS) kernel. Then the LANCE driver for the MACH kernel was modified, resulting in the RadioNet driver. This talk will decribe the tools and the current status of the RadioNet driver.

Just as for Markus Oelhafen's thesis, Pascal was an exchange student with EURECOM, so I do not know the credits or even if he was registered at KTH.

Accessible and affordable access to the Internet is crucial for socio-economic progress in developing countries and reducing Digital Divide. The disparity in mobile broadband penetration between urban and rural areas in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu can be explained by per capita income disparities. However, despite the vast body of multidisciplinary research, there are still large gaps in understanding Tamil Nadu’s upstream Internet market structure and its impact on mobile broadband affordability. Moreover, there is a lack of research analysing the Internet market structure in developing countries using Network Analysis. This dissertation explores the presence of structural connectivity bottlenecks in the upstream Internet market for three mobile operator networks in Tamil Nadu. The exploration employs Complex and Statistical Network Analysis on primary data collected via active Internet periphery measurements through the Portolan application. The results obtained indicate the existence of hierarchical upstream Internet market structures for all operator networks. Moreover, the collected evidence indicates the reliance of mobile operator’s connectivity on Tier-1 Internet Service Providers, while also revealing new Autonomous System relationships. This collected evidence highlights the crucial role that the level of hierarchical structuring of upstream Internet market structures plays in determining affordability. We show that endusers’ prices per Megabyte increase with the level of hierarchical structuring, indicating the policy relevance of assessing Complex Network metrics to understand and address the hierarchical structuring of the relevant markets. In conclusions, this work indicates the importance of studying structural bottlenecks and connectivity hubs, as our evidence shows that the upstream Internet market structure also defines the bargaining powers exerted by Internet Service Providers, resulting in reduced competition and less affordable price plans. These results should also nudge policymakers’ efforts to consider the different roles of ‘bottlenecks’ and ‘hub-like’ Internet Service Providers when aiming to reduce the Digital Divide.

Resumo:
With the popularity of portable computers and the proliferation of wireless networking interfaces, there is currently a great deal of interest in providing IP networking support for host mobility using the Internet as a foundation for wireless networking. Most proposed solutions depend on a default route through the mobile host's horne address, which makes for unnecessarily long routes. The major problem that this gives rise to is that of finding an efficient way of locating and routing that allows datagrams to be delivered efficiently to moving destinations whilst limiting costly Internet-wide location updates as much as possible. Two concepts - "local region" and "patron service" - are introduced based on the locality features of the host movement and packet traffic patterns. For each mobile host, the local region is a set of designated subnetworks within which a mobile host often moves, and the patrons are the hosts from which the majority of traffic for the mobile host originated. By making use of the hierarchical addressing and routing structure of Internet, the two concepts are used to confine the effects of a host moving, so location updates are sent only to a designated host moving area and to those hosts which are most likely to call again, thus providing nearly optimal routing for most communication. The proposed scheme was implemented as an IP extension using a network simulator and evaluated from a system performance point of view. The results show a significant reduction in the accumulated communication time along with improved datagram tunneling, as compared with its extra location overhead. In addition, a comparison with another scheme shows that our functionality is more effective both for location update and routing efficiency. The scheme offers improved network and host scalability by isolating local movement from the rest of the world, and provides a convenient point at which to perform administration functions.

Internet Telephony defined as real time voice or multimediacommunications over packet switched networks dates back to theearly days of the Internet. ARPA's Network SecureCommunications project had implemented, as early as December1973, an infrastructure for local and transnet real time voicecommunication. Two main sets of standards have emerged: H. 323from the ITU-T and the session initiation protocol (SIP) fromthe Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Both includespecifications for value added services. Value added services,or more simply services, are critical to service providers'survival and success. Unfortunately, the service architecturesthat come with the ITU-T and the IETF sets of standards arerather weak. Although they are constantly evolving, alternatives and complements need to be researched. This thesiswhich is made up of a formal dissertation and 6 appendices, proposes a novel mobile agent based service architecture forInternet Telephony. The architecture addresses the issues noneof the existing architectures solves in a satisfactory manner.Furthermore it adds mobile agents to the panoply of servicecreation tools. The appendices are reprints of articlespublished in refereed magazines/journals or under considerationfor publication. The formal dissertation is a summary of thepublications. A consistent and comprehensive set ofrequirements are derived. They are TINA-C flavored, but adaptedto Internet Telephony. They are used to critically reviewrelated work and also used to motivate the use of mobile agentsas the pillars of a novel architecture. The components of thisnovel architecture are identified. The key component is themobile service agent. It acts as a folder and carriesservice(s) to which the end-user has subscribed. Mobile serviceagents need to be upgraded when new versions of service logicare available and when end-users make changes to service data. This thesis proposes a novel upgrading framework. The currentInternet infrastructure comprises a wide range of hosts. Mobileagent platforms are now available for most of thesehosts/clients including memory/processing power constrainedPDAs. Our mobile service agents need to adapt to hostvariability when roaming. A novel adaptivity framework is alsoproposed. These two frameworks are general and can be appliedto any other mobile agent which meets a basic set ofassumptions. A key advantage of a mobile agent based servicearchitecture is that it enables the developement of mobileagent based services. The thesis proposes a novel mobile agentbased multi-party session scheduler. The feasibility and theadvantages of the architecture proposed by this thesis havebeen demonstrated by a prototype on which measurements havebeen made. Future work includes the addition of a securityframework to the architecture, and refinenements to theupgrading and adaptivity frameworks. More mobile agent basedservices, especially mobile multi agent based services willalso be developed.

Resumo:
Software mobile agents is a new distributed computing paradigm which was developed to support efficient computing over the Internet. Since its inception there has been a significant research effort to produce concrete agent-based artefacts. This phenomenon resulted in the proliferation of a large number of agent systems, mostly based on proprietary programming languages, each with its own characteristics, peculiarities and assumptions. Hence the agent technology has largely remained hidden and incomprehensible by Internet end users. Moreover the issue of interoperability and integration of agents with existing legacy software has only just started to be addressed by the agent research community in a rather ad hoc way. In this thesis we attempt to design an agent architecture which is independent of any programming language and therefore is directly suitable for Internet end users. The proposed architecture, labelled as Mobile Agent System for Internet Computing (MASIC), addresses several important contemporary issues in agent research. It defines an agent as a container of reusable components that can be copied or moved to other agents. Each agent has a symmetric I/O access control module and is also equipped with associative access collaboration facilities. Additionally every agent contains a navigator module which stores the agent's itinerary plan and provides an interface via which the agent itself or other authorised agents can dynamically adapt the plan to reflect run-time events and constraints. The agent system provides an integrated access control architecture which enables an agent to define customised access control structures that can be fully or partially shared with other agents. Existing access control structures can be combined to create new structures that represent more complex access mechanisms. Agents can discover other agents offering pertinent services via an adaptive, customisable agent discovery architecture incorporated in MASIC. This discovery architecture enables the full interaction of links with queries and supports the definition of access paths which are tightly coupled with access control and. other customised services. MASIC also provides the conceptual architecture of a message-oriented agent communication system integrated with a mobility management scheme. Finally, this thesis presents the design and implementation of a prototype graphical interface which enables the potential user of the system to create, manage and interact with agents in real time. In conclusion the research presented in this thesis aims to provide a comprehensive, language-neutral, secure, collaborative environment within which mobile agents can interact with their peers in order to perform their tasks efficiently while human operators can oversee and manage these activities through a user friendly interface. The architecture is generic in nature as it can support general-purpose, agent-based computations. Its concepts, entities and mechanisms can be fully or partially re-used to provide architectural solutions to challenges in various application domains such as Knowledge Management, the GRID and E-Commerce.

In recent years, wireless networks with Internet services have become more and more popular. Technologies which integrate Internet and wireless networks have extended traditional Internet applications into a more flexible and dynamic environment. This research work investigates the technology that supports the connection between a Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Network (MANET) and the Internet, which enables the current wireless Internet technologies to provide a ubiquitous wireless life style. With detailed analysis of the existing wireless Internet technologies and MANETs regarding their features and applications, the demand and lack of research work for an application to provide Internet connection to MANET is indicated. The primary difficulty for MANET and Internet connection is that the dynamic features of MANET do not suit the traditional connection methods used in infrastructure wireless networks. This thesis introduces new concept of the 'Gateway Awareness' (GAW) to the wireless devices in the MANET. GAW is a new routing protocol designed by the author of this thesis, at the University of Warwick. Based on GAW, an inclusive definition for the connection method, which supports the Internet connection and keeps the independency of routing in MANET, is addressed. Unlike other research work, this method supports the MANET and Internet communication in both directions. Furthermore, it explores possible ways of using the Internet as an extension for wireless communications. The GAW routing method is developed from destination sequenced distance vector (DSDV) routing protocol. However, it defines a layer of wireless nodes (known as GAWNs) with exclusive functions for the Internet connection task. The layer of GAWNs brings a new set of route update and route selection method. Simulations show that the GAW routing method provides quality Internet connection performance in different scenarios compared with other methods. In particular, the connection is completed with minimum effect on the independent MANET while the routing efficiency and accuracy is guaranteed.

Over the past five years, mobile Internet services in Japan have seen major expansion as a result of collaboration between mobile operators acting as mobile portal providers, and their complementors, namely, content providers. However, the content business is currently under pressure to become profitable, and major players have found it difficult to differentiate their services from competitors In other words, service has become commoditized, which has resulted in a shift to the mature stage. This thesis suggests Web services as a solution to overcoming the commoditization of mobile Internet services and spurring new development in the industry. This emerging technology allows users to create a combination of Web resources through two fundamental approaches that lead to an innovation. The Web service requester approach enables integration of a variety of Web services as complementary assets from their business partners into their content. System Dynamics modeling methodology is used to examine how Web service requesters could promote product and process innovation as well as outsourcing. The analyses indicate that it is critical to adopt a different strategy under different scenarios of Web services diffusion, taking into consideration the requesters' dependence on Web service providers. The Web service provider approach offers an excellent opportunity to create distribution channels for services. Two case studies are analyzed in depth to understand how the subject companies took advantage of being a Web service provider with the support of complementors as well as users to promote innovation. Finally, suggestions are made for how the mobile industry value chain could evolve through Web services implementations, and policy
(cont.) recommendations are offered for major stakeholders. Web services will likely enable close collaboration between players in the industry, including Web service providers, Web service requesters, and toolkit developers, all of which should see increasing value, which leads to further evolution of the mobile Internet industry.

The aim of this research is to highlight the factors and barriers that render mobile phone users averse to using their mobile handsets as an internet platform in Jordan. Three studies were conducted to achieve the aim of the conducted research of this PhD thesis. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used in all studies. Data was collected from the participants using questionnaires, open-ended questions and sketching techniques. Firstly, mobile internet usage in Jordan was explored in its wider sense. On the basis of these results, the second study compared PC and mobile internet use. This comparison resulted in the preference of PC internet rather than mobile internet. The study covered many aspects such as usability, familiarity, achievement and satisfaction in dealing with both mobile and stationary tools internet. The third study was divided into two sections. The first part required participants to design (using a sketching technique) a mobile application with regard to handling a critical issue (car violations), to establish the possibility for internet users in Jordan to perform tasks on a mobile platform that they currently perform on stationary internet tools. The second part of the study was an evaluation of this prototype application. The results revealed that the application was found to be very easy and useful by the participants of the study. They added that they would benefit from using such applications in their lives. There was an observed issue of security and trust related to the payment option provided as an option in the application. Participants were cautious and declined to use any ―untrusted‖ method of payment. In addition to lacking trust in e-commerce, participants lack trust and confidence in online payment methods, and stated that they would not recommend the payment option to anyone. Finally, the outcome of the study showed that the application is a novel idea in Jordan, and it is very easy to handle and use. Participants commented that it was easy to interact with the mobile application in order to complete different tasks. The key benefit of the application for participants lies in saving time, by avoiding long queues at the Traffic Department.

There has been little understanding of how consumers adopt and use the mobile Internet. This dissertation seeks to bridge this gap in prior literature by focusing on consumers’ cross-platform consumption behavior on mobile devices. The first study of this dissertation addresses how the adoption of mobile applications influences the use of corresponding mobile websites. Pseudo-panel analysis based on repeated cross-sectional data suggests that the introduction of a mobile app by a major national media company leads to a significant increase in demand at the corresponding mobile news website. In addition, it reports that this effect is greater for consumers with higher appreciation for concentrated news content, with stronger propensity for a particular political viewpoint, and with fewer time constraints. The results are consistent with the interpretation that adoption of a provider’s news app stimulates corresponding mobile news website visits. The second study of this dissertation examines whether the quality of local fixed-line Internet service influences mobile Internet adoption and usage. An empirical analysis shows that local fixed-line Internet speed relates negatively to mobile Internet adoption and usage; if the local fixed-line connection is insufficient, consumers tend to get online through their mobile phones. Further, better local mobile Internet speed increases the likelihood of adopting and using the mobile Internet. Neither fixed-line nor mobile Internet speed has significant impacts on mobile-specific offline services such as taking photos or videos. In some circumstances, competition between the two platforms is stronger, such as among younger consumers and those living in areas with lower fixed-line Internet speeds.

The mobile technology is under constant development and the mobile phone today has many other functions besides just talking. The demand for new mobile services is constantly getting stronger since the mobile phone becomes more and more powerful. Among these services is the possibility to perform transactions of money. With this we mean using the mobile phone to pay bills and other services that is connected to a user’s assets. The transaction of money of course requires high security. What do the consumers know about the security surrounding these kinds of services? Today many payments and transactions that involve money takes place over the Internet from the home computer and the banks that offers these services claims that this is safe. But what do they say about the security surrounding their mobile alternatives? Does the necessary security exist for these mobile services and does it have the consumers trust? If the users do not trust the security surrounding the mobile service, they will probably not use them. We will therefore with this thesis try to investigate if the security that surrounds the mobile payment services is equivalent to when the services is used on a home computer and if the services has the users trust?

The purpose with this thesis is to investigate the users trust regarding mobile payment services and if these services fulfil the same security demands as when they are used normally at the home computer. The study began with a review of existing theories regarding the security for mobile Internet and Internet usage on the home computer. Thereafter interviews took place with experts having great knowledge regarding mobile Internet security. We then performed a web-based survey to get information about the users trust for the security surrounding mobile payment services. We used a focus group with the aim of helping us selecting relevant questions for the survey. The results from the interviews and the survey study were then analyzed with the chosen theory.

On the basis of our survey we can draw the conclusion that the majority of respondents do not trust the security that surrounds mobile payment services. The majority is of the opinion that it is not as safe to use mobile Internet services as to use the corresponding service from the computer at home. However half of the population could very well consider paying bills with the mobile phone and a large part of the respondents would also like to use financial transactions with this kind of media. We also conclude that a mobile phone does not reach the security standard of a home computer.

Today more and more objects in our daily lives are getting connected to the Internet. This phenomenon is called the Internet of Things and is a way for physical things such as cars, buildings or even bus stations to get access and communicate with other objects using the Internet. The problem is that for every Internet of Things device, an application is often needed in order to communicate with these devices. Developing mobile applications in a separate programming language for each operating system can be an expensive and time consuming task. In this thesis, we implement and evaluate a cross-platform mobile solution for users to interact with smart things using the advantages of web technologies. To compare previous findings in this area, two literature reviews has been performed to find out which is the state of the art on cross-platform mobile development frameworks and smart-things technologies used for interacting with physical objects. The result is a mobile application developed using PhoneGap and jQuery Mobile that interacts with iBeacons, where students inside a university building can get directions and schedules for different rooms. The application received good results from a couple of usability studies, and performed well when measuring its performance. The outcome shows that web technologies that exist today are a viable solution to native mobile applications in terms of interacting with smart things such as tagging technologies.

The Internet Protocol (IP), established by IETF, is a standard for internet communication, which supports the network node addressing and packet routing, and currently has two versions: IPv4 and IPv6. The routing method compares the network prefix coded of the packets to determine the routing path. When roaming to the other network, the un-updated prefix code will cause the packets sending to wrong destination. Followed by the progress of wireless network technology, various mobile devices roaming around different networks make the problem of packet loss more crucial. Solutions for these problems were proposed, such as “Mobile IP” and “Mobile IPv6” by IETF, most of them need to remodel the current network architecture or to revise the packet format to achieve IP’s mobility. So it’s too complicated to be accepted by public. This pager proposes a new method for IP mobility, which adopts a mutual endorsement scheme on both networks. It also gets connection for authentication and information exchange by TCP and inquires the latest address by ICMP. In addition, the IP mobility can be achieved without changing network architecture or packet format. Through implementation, we have proved the validation of this method.

Internet and mobile communication are two of the most important trends in recent years. Although people have also talked about mobile Internet for a few years, there was not really a mobile Internet, except NTT DoCoMO’s i-mode demonstrated some kind of success. But as technologies and business models keep evolving; those prerequisites for integrated user experience and a true mobile Internet are getting mature. Under this new circumstance, the mobile Internet will have an open ecosystem for third party applications and devices. There are many value chains of different industries involved in the open ecosystem of mobile Internet 2.0. In this thesis, these industries related to mobile Internet and those business wars happened between players on these value chains are first described. Then the evolution of mobile Internet from a closed ecosystem to an open one will be introduced. This research proposes a value network, derived from related value chains jointly, to provide an overview of the open ecosystem of mobile Internet 2.0, for better understanding the multiple relationships of cooperation and competition between these players. Based on the knowledge of the value network of mobile Internet, the initiatives and their strategic implications of some important players or companies will be analyzed for further comprehension of the current and future development of the Mobile Internet 2.0. The cases analyzed in this research include mobile operators, Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Nokia and Apple. In addition some advices are also provided to smaller players or new participants.

This research is mainly discussing how the developed mobile network and the popularity of smartphone influence the traditional conversation way. By the limit of wired network, in the past, the internet phone was greatly limited the way people used. Now, because of the mature of 3G network, not only the stability of a substantial increase in mobile networks, but also the price of internet phone is lower than the traditional phone. Those reasons increase the willingness of consumers to use. Based on Rogers’ diffusion of innovation theory, this study explores the impact of the compatibility, relative advantage, usability, functionality, and service, to observe consumers’ willingness of using the mobile network to make an internet phone call. The results showed that age is significant in impact of usability, in the range of 21-30 years old, the respondents are more concerned about this impact. Gender is significant in both of functionality and service impact. In the functionality impact, men are more consider than women. But, in the service impact, women are more consider than men.

This thesis presents a new design of information architecture for the mobile Internet to achieve scalable content creation. The core originality of our design is a data structure for Web content encoding. With a unique tree hierarchy, this data structure enables the information architecture to take advantage of many open technologies for Internet content development, resulting in a dynamic adaptation of Web content based on variations in communication channel conditions and terminal device capabilities. Compared with proposals offered by other researchers, our design accomplishes content adaptation based on a more detailed analysis of the channel and device, an approach highly necessary for today's digital world of flourishing multimedia. As an empirical evaluation, a three-tier Web-browsing application is built to show that our solution can reach the adaptation objectives with an easy and cost-effective implementation. Thus, our design can be quickly employed in content creation for the mobile Internet. Furthermore, through extensions, our work can serve end-users through attractive mobile applications, while contributing significantly to the development of the mobile Internet.

The security of home, office, laboratory, warehouse and factory is important to human being. An accident was often caused by the negligence of humans. The burglary, fire accident and toxic gas accident are increasing, year by year. Recently, the internet based robotic systems have been successfully applied in factory automation, dangerous environments, hospitals, surgery, entertainment, space exploration, farmland, military, service, etc. Users can easily know what happens and control the situation through remote supervisory control interface of a robot system. The two major topic of this thesis are to develop a kernel for subsystems cooperation in the robotic and a technique suitable for internet based supervisory control systems. The robot system is basically a decentralized architecture through a kernel controller to handle the activity of each subsystem. Each subsystem has the capability to deal with a specific assignment by its intelligence. The cooperation of the overall subsystems is through the communication handled by a kernel. Finally, the operator could control a mobile robot and monitor environment situation by connecting a kernel through the internet or LAN. It is more convenient and efficient for operators to control an intelligent robot by selecting supervisory control mode or direct control mode on the interface with GUI or human-language-like commands.

Internet is a kind of new communication model in the end of the 20th century. However, with the rapid growth of telecommunication technologies, comes a brand new communication paradigm: mobile Internet. According to the research presented by Ovum in 2003, the total revenue of mobile Internet market may reach 71 billion dollars high in 2007. Although the usage of mobile Internet has been expected to increase rapidly, the profits of mobile Internet services providers do not seem to meet their expectations. As a result, this may result from mobile Internet users’ initial adoption behavior. The main objective of this study is to investigate the critical factors that affect users’ and nonusers’ adoption of mobile Internet. After literature review, the study proposed an adoption model for mobile Internet adoption which consists of seven critical factors: perceived of usefulness, perceived ease of use (usability), system quality, social influence, compatibility, playfulness, and perceived sacrifice. An on-line survey was conducted in order to find more mobile Internet users. The result of this study is to understand the difference between the two groups under the impact of seven critical factors. There are 409 valid samples returned, including 151 users and 258 nonusers. The interviewees can be divided into three categories: users, potential users, and nonusers. In demographic variables, education and personal income have significant difference among the three. There is also difference among the three in the seven critical factors except system quality. In regression analysis, this study found that ‘perceived usefulness’, ‘compatibility’, ‘playfulness’, have great influences on users’ and potential users’ attitude toward mobile Internet service. To have more effective ways of marketing and customer retention, in the future providers have to make great efforts to enrich their contents with usefulness and playfulness, and to improve interface.

In the diversification of teaching environment, learning places are no longer limited to classrooms. The learning contents can also be presented in various ways. In such a learning environment, software of computer-assisted instruction with distinguishing features of multimedia that can promote user’s learning motivation and effect. In this paper, we present three kinds of teaching software that uses animation to help users to understand teaching contents. In our implementation, the users can learn teaching contents by using different terminal devices in anywhere and at anytime. Especially, the teaching software of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) version presents a new concept of learning. Most WAP websites provide text-only content. Animation is one of the desirable features for WAP servers. However, most WAP toolkits do not provide animation tools for WAP websites. In order to improve the common limitation of the WAP toolkits, we also present WAP animation templates and a templates processor that can generate animation WML codes automatically.

This paper uses TAM and TRA to explore consumer attitude to mobile internet completely, and combines subjective norm influencing on attitude. We also integrate variables influencing on attitude from mobile internet literatures. Besides, we use expe-rience of mobile internet to compare the difference. In this paper, samples are both mobile phone subscribers and internet users. The collected data were analyzed and con-firmed hypotheses by using SEM. The results indicate that attitude positively influence intention and found consum-ers are significantly influenced by perceived ease of use、perceived usefulness、perceived enjoyment and perceived price. This paper also indicates image、perceived enjoyment、perceived quality and subjective norm have significantly difference between experience and inexperience samples. In addition, we also understand telecommunication operators can promote mobile internet for different groups.

The target of this study is to develop a smart antenna array for mobile communication application, so as to improve the transmission efficiency and interference suppression. The center frequency of 2.4 GHz is chosen, which is one of the ISM band (Industrial Scientific Medical Band) and is commonly used for WLAN (IEEE 802.11b / IEEE 802.11g), Bluetooth, and ZigBee applications. Most of the conventional antenna designs for mobile application are omnidirectional ones because the signal may come from any direction. However, this does not lead to optimal data transmission performance and the antenna will also receive interferences from all directions. Since the wanted signal comes from a particular direction only, we propose an antenna array for mobile devices, in which the relative phases of the antenna elements are varied in a way that the main beam of the radiation pattern can be set to the desired direction with suppression of undesired interferences from other directions. This work employs a 2×2 patch antenna planar array on a PCB (printed circuit board) size of 200 mm ×137.5 mm, which is about the size of a 7.9 inch tablet. The relative phase of the antenna feed is controlled by digital phase shifters. The main beam of proposed antenna array can be set to four directions, which are the east, west, south, and north sides. The measured bandwidth for 10 dB return loss is about 4.6%, with a peak gain of 1 dBi and a HPBW (half-power beam width) of about 50 degree. It can be applied to the back of tablet of size larger than 7.9 inch for improving the transmission efficiency and interference suppression.

At present, information and technology are very advanced, people almost received information about what happened outside all the time. In the past, people through television, newspapers and radio to received information, but now, because of technology of internet is more and more advanced they can through computer or mobile to received anything they want know. Although the mobile internet is very advanced, but there are still have not many people to use it in Taiwan. This study is want to know what factors can attract people to use mobile internet. This study proposes a research framework that integrates enjoyment and switch cost with technology acceptance model (TAM), theory of planned behavior (TPB). We used the proposed model to explore antecedents of consumers’ behavioral intention to adopt mobile internet. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine relationships among constructs in the proposed model. Our findings indicated that perceived ease of use, perceived useful and perceived enjoyment are significantly influence on attitude toward and behavioral intention, and perceived behavioral control is not significantly influence behavioral intention. The group of high switch costs is less effect than group of low switch cost on behavioral intention, and subjective norm is more heavily effect group of high switch cost than group of low switch cost. Keywords: switch cost, TAM, TPB, mobile internet
