Microexpression can manifest the real mood of humans, which has been widely concerned in clinical diagnosis and depression analysis. To solve the problem of missing discriminative spatiotemporal features in a small data set caused by the short duration and subtle movement changes of microexpression, we present a dual-stream spatiotemporal attention network (DSTAN) that integrates dual-stream spatiotemporal network and attention mechanism to capture the deformation features and spatiotemporal features of microexpression in the case of small samples. The Spatiotemporal networks in DSTAN are based on two lightweight networks, namely, the spatiotemporal appearance network (STAN) learning the appearance features from the microexpression sequences and the spatiotemporal motion network (STMN) learning the motion features from optical flow sequences. To focus on the discriminative motion areas of microexpression, we construct a novel attention mechanism for the spatial model of STAN and STMN, including a multiscale kernel spatial attention mechanism and global dual-pool channel attention mechanism. To obtain the importance of each frame in the microexpression sequence, we design a temporal attention mechanism for the temporal model of STAN and STMN to form spatiotemporal appearance network-attention (STAN-A) and spatiotemporal motion network-attention (STMN-A), which can adaptively perform dynamic feature refinement. Finally, the feature concatenate-SVM method is used to integrate STAN-A and STMN-A to a novel network, DSTAN. The extensive experiments on three small spontaneous microexpression data sets of SMIC, CASME, and CASME II demonstrate the proposed DSTAN can effectively cope with the recognition of microexpressions.

A micro-expression is defined as an uncontrollable muscular movement shown on the face of humans when one is trying to conceal or repress his true emotions. Many researchers have applied the deep learning framework to micro-expression recognition in recent years. However, few have introduced the human visual attention mechanism to micro-expression recognition. In this study, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal convolutional neural network with the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) for micro-expression recognition. First image sequences were input to a medium-sized convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract visual features. Afterwards, it learned to allocate the feature weights in an adaptive manner with the help of a convolutional block attention module. The method was testified in spontaneous micro-expression databases (Chinese Academy of Sciences Micro-expression II (CASME II), Spontaneous Micro-expression Database (SMIC)). The experimental results show that the 3D CNN with convolutional block attention module outperformed other algorithms in micro-expression recognition.

Aiming at the problems of weak intensity of facial micro-expression changes, background noise interference and low feature differentiation, a micro-expression recognition network integrating LBP and parallel attention mechanism is proposed. The network inputs RGB images into the densely connected improved Shuffle Stage branch to extract global facial features and enhance the association of contextual semantic information; the LBP image is input into the local texture feature branch composed of multi-scale hierarchical convolutional neural network to extract detail information; after the dual-branch feature extraction, the parallel attention mechanism is introduced at the back end of the network to improve the feature fusion ability, suppress background interference, and focus on the micro-expression feature interest area; the proposed method is tested on three public datasets including CASME, CASME II and SMIC, and the recognition accuracy rates are , and respectively ; the experimental results show that the proposed method effectively improves the accuracy of micro-expression recognition, which is better than many current advanced methods.

This thesis explores education quality by introducing the concept of "a-quality," akin to the model of "a-synthesis" (Perez, 2008). The prefix "a" is suspensive, inviting us to explore educational quality by examining it at the level of its theoretical constructs. A-quality is approached in its dual aspects of micro-attention and micro-violence in Lebanon, beset by severe crises. Our thesis aims to unveil the role of the human who interacts with others and with the environment, an overlooked aspect of quality and the sole defence against societal flux. The research question that guides this study is: What humanistic a-quality aspects can define the blind spot of school quality to address the uncertainty of the Lebanese context? We hypothesize that humanistic a-quality focuses on the holistic development of educational actors, harnesses their distinctive capacities, and cultivates an eco-emergent institution to meet the challenges in an uncertain context. Our thesis employs a mixed-methods approach, following Creswell's (2014) sequential explanatory design, combining quantitative and qualitative data. The findings reveal that a-quality is perceived more in uncertain contexts by the absence of micro-violence rather than by the presence of micro-attentions. Faced with societal shifts, educational actors appear more attuned to micro-violence than micro-attention, as harmful practices leave often indelible marks on humans. Therefore, the evolving school embeds itself in its context, becoming eco-emergent, and capable of transforming obstacles into learning opportunities and growth. It empowers educational actors with life skills, mindful of their well-being within a benevolent otherness, valuing everyone’s uniqueness within a collective intelligence (De Ketele, 2020a) serving the common good and a non-uniform world (Mutuale, 2020)

When Salini v Morocco held that the word ‘investment’ in the ICSID Convention has an objective meaning that limits the ability of Member States to submit disputes to ICSID arbitration, the tribunal included ‘a contribution to development’ as an element of its definition. This chapter introduces the concept of a micro-investment dispute, which focuses attention on small investments giving rise to ICSID cases. The micro-investment lens reveals the failings of Salini’s contribution-to-development prong. By conditioning ICSID jurisdiction on an individualized showing of such a contribution, this prong disproportionately burdens micro-investors, inhibiting their access to ICSID despite the fact that the drafters of the ICSID Convention specifically rejected a minimum size requirement. In so doing, the development prong also limits ICSID’s value to those who need it most. In the name of promoting development, Salini may well undercut it.

How do people deal with diversity in deprived and mixed urban neighbourhoods? This book provides a comparative international perspective on superdiversity in cities, with explicit attention given to social inequality and social exclusion on a neighbourhood level. Although public discourses on urban diversity are often negative, this book focuses on how residents actively and creatively come and live together through micro-level interactions. By deliberately taking an international perspective on the daily lives of residents, the book uncovers the ways in which national and local contexts shape living in diversity. The book will be a valuable resource for researchers and students of poverty, segregation and social mix, conviviality, the effects of international migration, urban and neighbourhood policies and governance, multiculturality, social networks, social cohesion, social mobility, and super-diversity.

This chapter analyzes performer interactions, bringing together many of the themes and issues discussed in previous chapters to demonstrate some of the ways that micro-moments of interaction on- and offstage are critical moments of complex cultural and ideological work. Building on Benjamin Brinner's attention to the importance of competence and authority in shaping interactions between performers as well as the ways such interactions affect what is performed, this chapter focuses on the relationship between the dancer and the drummer. It argues that contradictions between dominant ideologies that privilege the knowledge of a more senior male and a performance structure in which leadership roles are flexible provide spaces for men and women to negotiate their authority and articulate senses of gender in different ways as they negotiate the form and content of a dance.

After a brief discussion of the anthropological model that has transformed lyric scholarship in recent decades (highlighting both achievements and areas that have received little attention), two meanings of ‘Textual Events’ are set out. The first relates to pragmatics: lyric texts create their own settings, which variously interact with the actual circumstances of the performance. The second gestures to the concept of ‘event’ in contemporary philosophy: lyric creates unique interpretative, sensory, and emotive encounters with each listener and reader. A case is made for applying the term ‘literary’ to Greek lyric, despite (and because of) its anachronism. The remainder of the Introduction develops the notion of context (to encompass intellectual context), discussing continuities and discontinuities with context in book lyric; sets out ‘lyric moves’ (micro-traditions within the genre); and discusses aspects of performance not fully captured by the anthropological paradigm.

This chapter argues that, although the principle of R2P was initially underpinned by strongly cosmopolitan roots, since 2009 it has been defined and implemented in ways that elevate the importance of state responsibility. This trend may have fostered political consensus and given R2P added normative grounding, but it has also obscured both the challenges posed by non-state actors and the opportunities for implementation that exist beyond and below the state. R2P implementation in the next decade will be advanced by micro-level efforts to embed atrocity crime prevention and response into the work of a variety of actors in international society. This agenda requires not only increased attention to those regional or local actors in a position to prevent or respond to atrocity crimes, but also deeper engagement with the specific elements of each of the four crimes and violations specified in the 2005 Summit Outcome Document.

While political network research is often a holistic enterprise, the network paradigm can also be used to study individual behavior. Specifically, rather than focusing on full network structures, a well-established area of research considers individuals’ “core” networks, their perceptions of interpersonal connections, and the consequences of said micro-social environments for myriad political outcomes and processes. This chapter examines this research tradition, tracing the history of its use in the study of political behavior. It begins with discussion of network research, paying specific attention to “egocentric” network name generator techniques. It then outlines several challenges to this research paradigm: (1) the difficulty of making causal inferences, (2) debates over concept and measurement, and (3) questions about mechanisms of influence. The chapter concludes by reviewing advances in the field that have developed from these challenges and points toward next steps in this research agenda, focused on the connected citizenry.

One of the pillars of modern science, statistical mechanics, owes much to one man, the Austrian physicist Ludwig Boltzmann (1844–1906). As a result of his unusual working and writing styles, his enormous contribution remains little read and poorly understood. The purpose of this book is to make the Boltzmann corpus more accessible to physicists, philosophers, and historians, and so give it new life. The means are introductory biographical and historical materials, detailed and lucid summaries of every relevant publication, and a final chapter of critical synthesis. Special attention is given to Boltzmann’s theoretical tool-box and to his patient construction of lofty formal systems, even before their full conceptual import could be known. This constructive tendency largely accounts for his lengthy style, for the abundance of new constructions, for the relative vagueness of their object, and for the puzzlement of commentators. This book will help the reader cross the stylistic barrier and see how ingeniously Boltzmann combined atoms, mechanics, and probability to invent new bridges between the micro- and macro-worlds.

Abstract This chapter uses East Belgium as a case to conceptualize the relevance of micro-destinations for tourism development and strategic planning. The chapter provides an integrative definition of the term 'micro-destination' and explores the extent to which the region of East Belgium can be called a micro-destination. In addition, attention is paid to the strategic considerations required to ensure the sustainable tourism development of the region. By collecting primary data through a workshop and expert interviews, the authors propose projects that will only be efficiently implemented if a partnership and team spirit of all stakeholders is ensured.

AbstractViet Nam’s response to its vulnerability to climate change impacts is marked by the integration of climate change concerns into sectoral laws. The Government of Viet Nam has also acknowledged the interlinkages of climate change, gender equality, and mobility within its climate regulatory framework. However, the focus on climate-related mobility has predominantly centred on macro-level mobility, which refers to the broad categorisation of migration, displacement, and planned relocation, with limited attention given to micro-level mobility. This chapter understands micro-level mobility as the smaller-scale and day-to-day movements which involve individual decisions regarding daily activities, destinations, and modes of travel. Furthermore, challenges remain in translating national commitments into local action, as evidenced by urban flooding in Can Tho City. Complex interactions between political, economic, social, and environmental elements contribute to recurring floods, with a disconnection between central Government commitments and local implementation, resulting in gendered impacts. Women in Can Tho City bear disproportionate impacts during recurring flood events, restricting their micro-level mobility in the household and public sphere. Women’s decision to remain during floods results from a complex interplay between risk perception, socio-economic elements which contribute to vulnerability, and limited macro-level mobility options. However, at the same time, these women also actively employ strategies to cope with their restricted mobility, which signifies their agency in negotiating the associated risks and adapting to recurring floods. These insights into women’s mobility behaviour during flooding offer a valuable starting point for policymakers to integrate gender and mobility, both at the macro and micro-level dynamics, into concrete climate actions. The findings also underscore the need to pay more attention to micro-level mobility within the climate-related mobility discourse.

AbstractThis paper analyzes the content of “Arbitrary angle and radian system” in Chinese and American high school mathematics textbooks from macro and micro levels. At the macro level, curriculum standards and content range are compared, while at the micro level, concept learning, exercises and mathematical history are compared. The results show that compared with American mathematics textbooks, Chinese mathematics textbooks pay more attention to the cultivation of students’ “basic knowledge and ability” rather than inquiry ability. Chinese textbooks respect the logic of mathematical knowledge and emphasize the expression of mathematical language in concepts and exercises, while American textbooks are more reflective of real life. Chinese textbooks are more closely related to knowledge than American textbooks. Finally, some suggestions are put forward.

AbstractThe dry machining strategy has recently received high attention in the field of metal cutting as it can eliminate the environmental impacts associated with the usage of cutting fluids. However, high-generated heat and severe tool wear are usually observed for the dry machining operations. One of the suggested techniques to improve the dry machining performance is to utilize the textured cutting tools, reducing the friction at the chip-tool interface. In this study, three different micro-textured tool designs were used during the machining AISI 1045 at different cutting conditions. A life cycle assessment was performed including the power consumption for preparing the textured tool designs and the measured power during the machining experiments. Furthermore, some measured machining outputs (flank wear, surface roughness, and the unit volume machining time) were further included to offer a comprehensive and effective sustainability assessment for the performance of the utilized textured tools. The performance of these textured tools was also compared with the non-textured tool under the same cutting conditions. The textured tool design with narrow micro-groove width showed better sustainable performance compared to the non-textured tool and other textured tool designs.

Increasing population growth and high living standards, coupled with high consumption of energy and raw materials, result in a variety of emissions and waste that pollute the environment and pose a serious threat to the environment and health if not disposed of effectively. Pollution of the environment with plastic wastes and endocrine disruptors is one of the most important environmental problems affecting today's societies and nature. The Turkish Academy of Sciences, Environment, Biodiversity and Climate Change Working Group organized the "Workshop on Micro plastics, Endocrine Disruptors and Environmental Impacts" hosted by ITU North Cyprus on 3-5 November 2023 in order to draw attention to this global problem, raise awareness and develop solutions. At the workshop, experts and respected scientists, officials of institutions and organizations, non-governmental organizations, members of the press and participants from the public discussed the issue comprehensively for a sustainable future. This work has compiled and presented to you, our esteemed readers, the important issues that were presented, discussed and debated during the workshop on plastics, micro pollutants and endocrine disruptors, which can create awareness in our country and universally, and the scientific research and project outputs that can guide decision-makers.

Substantial attention has been paid in recent years to the risk of maturity mismatch in emerging markets. Although this risk is microeconomic in nature, the evidence advanced thus far has taken the form of macro correlations. This paper empirically evaluates this mechanism at the micro level by using a database of over 3,000 publicly traded firms from fifteen emerging markets. The paper measures the risk of short-term exposure by estimating, at the firm level, the effect on investment of the interaction of short-term exposure and aggregate capital flows. This effect is (statistically) zero, contrary to the prediction of the maturity-mismatch hypothesis. This conclusion is robust to using a variety of different estimators, alternative measures of capital flows, and controls for devaluation effects and access to international capital. The paper finds evidence that short-term-exposed firms pay higher financing costs and liquidate assets at fire sale prices, but the paper does not find that this reduction in net worth translates into a drop in investment.

Presumptive tax has become a popular way of taxing businesses operating in the informal sector in middle- and low-income countries. The introduction of the presumptive tax system in Ethiopia in 2002 was intended to widen the tax base by bringing more informal sector operators into the tax net. However, the unintended consequences of its introduction were not adequately scrutinised, and it has been a source of criticism and complaints due to its alleged unfairness and lack of clarity in its implementation. A simple imposition of the presumptive tax upon the informal sector, without considering its complexity and the diversity of its actors, might have various negative consequences. In particular, it would likely compromise both horizontal and vertical equity. This study examines the issue empirically, exploring the equity implications of the presumptive tax system to tax the informal sector in Addis Ababa. The informal sector receives limited attention from either policymakers or researchers, and, prior to this research, we had no evidence on the characteristics of informal micro enterprises and the equity implications of Ethiopia’s presumptive tax system.

Rizzo, Tesalia. Shaping political trust through participatory governance in Lat in America. Inter-American Development Bank, agosto de 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003601.

Resumo:
This paper critically assesses research that examines the link between participatory institutions and political trust in the context of developing countries, with a focus on Latin America. A significant limitation in the systematic accumulation of knowledge in this field is inattention to identifying a clear causal chain through which citizen participation shapes political, economic, and attitudinal outcomes such as political trust. This is particularly important in the Latin American case where constitutionally stated objectives of participatory governance include the improvement of citizen welfare as well as strengthening of political trust in public institutions. Future work should concentrate in providing clear and testable models of the complex relationship between participatory mechanisms, policy, governance, and trust, with particular attention to what mediates and moderates this relationship. Additionally, empirical work done of the Latin America case should move away from a predominantly case-study based and macro-level perspective in the study of participatory institutions to micro-level studies from the citizens point of view. A new frontier for the study of participatory governance in Latin America lies in understanding how citizens experiences with and expectations of participatory institutions as well as the policy outcomes delivered by these institutions shape political trust.
