AbstractThe St. Petersburg Paradox is a famous economic and philosophical puzzle that has generated numerous conflicting explanations. To shed empirical light on this phenomenon, we examined subjects’ bids for one St. Petersburg gamble with a real monetary payment. We found that bids were typically lower than twice the smallest payoff, and thus much lower than is generally supposed. We also examined bids offered for several hypothetical variants of the St. Petersburg Paradox. We found that bids were weakly affected by truncating the gamble, were strongly affected by repeats of the gamble, and depended linearly on the initial “seed” value of the gamble. One explanation, which we call the median heuristic, strongly predicts these data. Subjects following this strategy evaluate a gamble as if they were taking the median rather than the mean of the payoff distribution. Finally, we argue that the distribution of outcomes embodied in the St. Petersburg paradox is so divergent from the Gaussian form that the statistical mean is a poor estimator of expected value, so that the expected value of the St. Petersburg gamble is undefined. These results suggest that this classic paradox has a straightforward explanation rooted in the use of a statistical heuristic.

Background: Early prediction and quick diagnosis with simple, quick and easily available tool is essential part of early management of acute coronary syndrome e.g. ST segment elevated myocardial infarction. As platelet has a significant role in thrombus formation and larger sized platelets are more active in thrombotic pathogenicity, as such platelet indices can be the early predictor for acute coronary syndrome. Objective: Aim of this study was to assess the association of platelet count and mean platelet volume (MPV) in acute ST-elevated myocardial infarction. Methodology: This observational study was conducted at the department of Cardiology of National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Dhaka, Bangladesh from November 2019 to October 2020. Total 166 subjects were enrolled in this study. Among them 82 subjects (Group I) had acute ST-elevated myocardial infarction on resting ECG were admitted at CCU of NICVD and without any prior history of anti-platelet drugs intake, another 84 subjects (Group II) were enrolled in this study as control group with normal 12 lead resting ECG with normal Troponin-I. Results: No significant age difference observed between two groups (p =0.063). Significantly higher smoking and family history of coronary artery disease observed with ST elevated MI subjects (p:0.002 and <0.001 respectively). Associated risk factors like hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia were significantly high (<0.001) in ST-elevated MI patients. No significant difference observed in platelet count between ST elevated MI groups compared with the control (258 X 109/L vs. 267 X109/L). Mean platelet volume (MPV) was found to be higher in group I patients as compared to control (12.20±0.86 vs. 9.26±0.77) and it was significant (p <0.001). Conclusion: In acute ST-elevated myocardial infraction, higher mean platelet volume (MPV) and lower platelet count may be a useful marker. Bangladesh Heart Journal 2023; 38(2): 120-126

This contribution describes a novel iterative radio channel estimation algorithm based on superimposed training (ST) estimation technique. The proposed algorithm draws an analogy with the data dependent ST (DDST) algorithm, that is, extracts the cycling mean of the data, but in this case at the receiver's end. We first demonstrate that this mean removal ST (MRST) applied to estimate a single-input single-output (SISO) wideband channel results in similar bit error rate (BER) performance in comparison with other iterative techniques, but with less complexity. Subsequently, we jointly use the MRST and Alamouti coding to obtain an estimate of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) narrowband radio channel. The impact of imperfect channel on the BER performance is evidenced by a comparison between the MRST method and the best iterative techniques found in the literature. The proposed algorithm shows a good tradeoff performance between complexity, channel estimation error, and noise immunity.

Owusu, Yaw Boahene. "Incident coronary atherosclerosis, unstable angina, non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction or ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in type 2 diabetes : is mean glycated hemoglobin a good predictor?" Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2010-12-2067.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Background: Glycated hemoglobin is the indicator of long-term diabetes control and a value below 7 percent is recommended by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to reduce cardiovascular complications. Diabetic patients have a two- to four-fold risk of cardiovascular disease and approximately two-thirds of diabetic patients die as a result of cardiovascular complications. Three large prospective randomized controlled long-term trials within the last decade reported no significant reduction in cardiovascular complications in type 2 diabetic patients by intensive glycemic control. To the author's knowledge, no known retrospective studies have examined the association between mean serial glycated hemoglobin and coronary atherosclerosis (CA) or acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Objective: This study was designed to determine the association between mean serial glycated hemoglobin with incident CA or ACS in type 2 diabetic patients after controlling for age, gender, hypertension, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), microalbuminuria, aspirin use, statin use, insulin use, tobacco use, and body mass index (BMI). Methods: The study was a retrospective cohort database analysis using the Austin Travis County CommUnityCare[trademark] clinics' electronic medical record for the time period between October 1, 2004 and September 30, 2009. The primary outcome of the study was the incidence of CA or ACS and the primary independent variable was glycated hemoglobin (<7% vs. [greater than or equal to]7%). The study subjects included type 2 diabetic patients aged 30 to 80 years with at least one glycated hemoglobin value per year for a minimum of two consecutive years. Study subjects were excluded if CA or ACS occurred within six months of the index date (i.e., first glycated hemoglobin). Logistic regression analysis was used to address the study objective. Results: Overall, 3069 subjects met the study inclusion criteria with a mean follow-up period of approximately two years. Two percent (N=62) of the subjects had incident CA or ACS. After controlling for age, gender, hypertension diagnosis, LDL-C, microalbuminuria, aspirin use, statin use, insulin use, tobacco use and BMI, there was no significant association (OR=1.026, 95% CI=0.589-1.785, p=0.9289) between mean serial glycated hemoglobin and the incident diagnosis of CA or ACS. Increasing age (OR=1.051, 95% CI=1.025-1.077, p<0.0001), male gender (OR=1.855, 95% CI=1.105-3.115, p=0.0195) and normal weight (normal or underweight compared to obese: OR=0.122, 95% CI=0.017-0.895, p=0.0438) were significantly associated with incident CA or ACS. Conclusions: Mean serial glycated hemoglobin (comparing [greater than or equal to]7% to <7%) was not significantly associated with CA or ACS over a mean follow-up period of approximately two years. Until more evidence becomes available, clinicians and diabetic patients should target glycated hemoglobin level below or close to 7 percent as recommended by the ADA soon after diagnosis while concomitantly controlling nonglycemic risk factors of cardiovascular disease (statin use, aspirin use, blood pressure control, smoking cessation and life style modification), to reduce their long-term risk of incident CA or ACS.

This book is the author's sustained and devastating meditation on Jesus's anguished cry on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Why did this abandonment happen, what does it mean within the logic of the Gospels, how have believers and nonbelievers understood it, and how does it live on in art? The book unfolds context upon context in which this cry has reverberated, from early Christian apologetics and heretics to twentieth-century literature and philosophy. The author's guide through this unending story of divine abandonment is Johann Sebastian Bach's monumental Matthäuspassion, the parabolic mirror that bundled eighteen hundred years of reflection on the fate of the crucified and the only available medium that allows us post-Christian listeners to feel the anguish of those who witnessed the events of the Passion. With interspersed references to writers such as Goethe, Rilke, Kafka, Freud, and Benjamin, the book gathers evidence to raise the singular question that, in its view, Christian theology has not been able to answer: How can an omnipotent God be so offended by his creatures that he must sacrifice and abandon his own Son?

This chapter directly tackles a persistent objection to the use of secular law as a conversation partner in Christian ethics: the worry that a close relationship with the methods and concerns of law risks falling into a “legalism” that obscures the Good News of the Gospel. But what is legalism? Although Germain Grisez and H. Tristram Engelhardt Jr. both condemn “legalism,” close analysis shows that they mean opposite things by the term. The chapter uses St. Thomas Aquinas’s definition of law and its five primary components to examine and compare the different viewpoints of Grisez and Engelhardt. The chapter concludes that labeling an ethics “legalistic” is too imprecise a critique, and needs to be replaced by more specific challenges and concerns. When properly addressed, these challenges and concerns do not impede the use of law as a constructive conversation partner for Christian ethics.

Aristotle's moral philosophy is a pillar of Western ethical thought. It bequeathed to the world an emphasis on virtues and vices, happiness as well-being or a life well lived, and rationally motivated action as a mean between extremes. Its influence was felt well beyond antiquity into the Middle Ages, particularly through the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. In the past century, with the rise of virtue theory in moral philosophy, Aristotle's ethics has been revived as a source of insight and interest. While most attention has traditionally focused on Aristotle's famous Nicomachean Ethics, there are several other works written by or attributed to Aristotle that illuminate his ethics: the Eudemian Ethics, the Magna Moralia, and Virtues and Vices. This book brings together all four of these important texts, in thoroughly revised versions of the translations found in the authoritative complete works universally recognized as the standard English edition. Edited and introduced by two of the world's leading scholars of ancient philosophy, this is an essential volume for anyone interested in the ethical thought of one of the most important philosophers in the Western tradition.

They cover the months after the publication of his prospectus in April of 1779 until his departure in late 1781 to assume a new post in Grenoble. In 1780, his stipend was doubled to 1000 livres by the intendant, no doubt in compensation for a new course in botany that villars would inaugurate in March of 1780. This cross-sectional aimed to; 1) to explore the symptom management and quality of life (QoL) of palliative cancer patients, 2) to compare the perceived QoL outcomes between the patient who received standard treatment (ST) and who were treated with Cannabis treatment (CT). The study was carried out between 1st Febuary to 30st September 2021 from two hospitals in Roi-Et Regional Hospital and Sawang Dandin Crown Prince Hospital in Thailand. Using the EORTCQLQ-C30 and PPS assessment form, analysing with descriptive statistics, comparing mean scores for two patient groups by Independent T-test. The results found that patients of CT groups had a very high level of QoL while ST group had a high level. The consistency was statistically significant for overall QoL scores of CT higher than ST group (P-value < 001.0) both Cognitive functioning and Dyspnea symptoms (p-value=.05). However, the insomnia symptom indicated ST scores was higher than CT (P-value < 001.0). The results confirm that established the efficacy and safety of medical use of cannabis was benefit for patients. Therefore, it will be enhancing healthcare professionals to take opportunities for treatment for palliative patients’ care.

Abstract In October 1879, after ten months in Oxford, Hopkins was appointed to Liverpool. First he had to go on supply to St Joseph’s, Bedford Leigh,1 possibly to take the place of Fr Charles Karslake, brother of his schoolfriend Lewis Karslake. One bad aspect of the posting was its stopgap nature; he did not know what work faced him in Liverpool and came to doubt whether he should ever get there. There was no constancy even about his work in Leigh-he was liable to be sent for the odd day or week to nearby parishes, such as St John’s, Wigan, or the town of St Helens. St Helens he found ‘probably the most repulsive place in Lancashire or out of the Black Country. The stench of sulphuretted hydrogen rolls in the air and films of the same gas form on railing and pavement.’ Leigh itself was not much better, ‘a darksome place, with pits and mills and foundries’ . It was smaller and less dignified than nearby Rochdale, where Bridges’s mother lived: ‘the houses red, mean, and two storied; there are a dozen mills or so, and coalpits also; the air is charged with smoke as well as damp’.

Abstract What did Lossky expect his readers to understand by ‘mystical theology’? For when his Mystical Theology was published (in 1944), ‘mysticism’, or la mystique was very much in the air. Von Hügel had begun a trend, picked up by Heiler and Otto, and in Catholic circles by Bremond, Poulain, and Saudreau; Baruzi’s influential book on St John of the Cross discussed the problem of ‘mystical experience’. The ‘mystical’ was a category used by Balthasar and Daniélou; and then, just after Lossky’s book, Stolz, Gilson, and Bouyer wrote about it (Bouyer exploring its patristic origins). All this time Lossky was engaging with the mystical in his thesis on Eckhart, seeing in something beyond conceptualization, grasped by experience. In his Mystical Theology, Lossky expects such a pre-understanding of the mystical, but sees it as the deeper meaning of Church dogma, and associates it with sacramental experience.

<em>Abstract.—</em>Changes in abundance, seasonal occurrence, and mean size of American eels <em>Anguilla rostrata </em>in the lower St. Lawrence River during the past 50 years were examined. Catch per unit effort indices were calculated from daily catch records of eels captured in an experimental trap fishery and from the personal logbooks of a knowledgeable fisher. These two indices indicated a significant declining trend in eel catch rate by more than 50% since the early 1970s. Interannual fluctuations in catch rate were not related to variability in water level or water temperature. The timing of eel occurrence varied significantly between years and was inversely correlated to water level in August and September. It is hypothesized that eel movement is strongly determined by climatic/hydrological conditions in the previous summer. The average weight of eels has increased by 30% over the past eight years. The decline in catch rate and the increase in mean size of migratory silver eels in recent years are interpreted as the most significant symptoms of low recruitment levels and the precursory signal that the eel fishery in the lower St. Lawrence River may not be sustainable in the near future.

To get to the idea that we can find meanings not just in conventional signifying objects (words, stories) but in the world and hence envision a “book of nature,” we need to reimagine signification itself. This chapter examines how, beginning with St. Augustine, Christian thinkers proposed various schemes for seeking and discovering meanings in nature just as we do in Holy Scripture. This is because, as Augustine explains, signs are things that “point beyond themselves,” and natural objects can function as signs. Accepting that natural signs point beyond themselves to something else requires accepting a form of idealism according to which there are truths and qualities that dwell in a realm removed from that of direct experience. The “book of nature” conceit was temporarily brought to an end by the Protestant Reformation and the rise of modern science—the former through the motto “sola scriptura” (by Scripture alone), which pushed readers to seek fixed meanings in the holy texts, and the latter through its insistence that natural objects possess not metaphysical meanings but only empirically discoverable properties. Then the “book of nature” conceit returned in the work of George Berkeley (1685–1753) and his philosophy of immaterialism, according to which we lack all direct perceptual access to objects in the world, and so those supposed objects are equivalent to the “meanings” that lie behind our perceptions.

Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem and also preached by the shore of the Sea of Galilee. If we are supposed to imitate him, does that mean we also need to ride a donkey into Jerusalem and preach by the Sea of Galilee? The chapter shows how it is important to go beyond superficial mimicry to understand how to imitate the mind of Jesus at a deeper level. It ends by contrasting two cases that more or less demonstrate what it means to imitate Jesus (i.e., Anthony of the Desert and St. Francis of Assisi).

<em>Abstract.—</em>The American eel <em>Anguilla rostrata </em>is declining in the St. Lawrence River watershed, where sex ratio is highly unbalanced in favor of females. Since the American eel is a panmictic species, this demographic dominance is implicated in reproductive potential of the species. The major objective of this study was to evaluate the reproductive strategies of five subpopulations of female eels. It was assumed that fecundity varies among subpopulations according to their migration distance because of the tradeoff between energy allocated to gonads and to somatic tissues. Thirty female silver eels were collected from each of five locations in the St. Lawrence watershed 2,850–4,300 km from the spawning area. Among subpopulations, mean length ranged from 67.9 to 104.3 cm, weight from 595 to 2,366 g, fecundity from 6.5 to 14.5 million oocytes, age from 20 to 23 years, gonadosomatic index from 2.9 to 4.1%, and somatic lipid content from 17.5 to 21.7%. Because of panmixia, no genetic influence on intersite variability is expected. Environmental differences in growth habitats and individual fitness might determine acquisition and allocation of resources, as well as subsequent variability in traits that would affect reproduction. In contrast to previous hypotheses, variations in such traits were attributed to eel size rather than migration distance. The number of oocytes per silver eel was positively correlated with length rather than negatively correlated with migration distance. In the St. Lawrence watershed, large eels are highly fecund regardless of their distance from the spawning ground.

Limitation of infarct size (IS), using ST-261, was evaluated in a group (I) of eight dogs, during acute MI. Another group (II) served as the control group. The protocol for both groups was the same except that each dog in the treated group was ST-261 as a single bolus (25 mg/kg, in 20ml normal saline), before inducing an occluding thrombus in the mid-LAD, using a closed-chest model, under x-ray visualization. Percentages of total (gms) myocardium at jeopardy (TMJW) and myocardial necrosis (TMNW), delineated by fluoroscein and TTC dyes, respectively, were calculated and compared to the total ventricular myocardial weight (TVMU), by computer technique for both groups at 3 Hrs post-occlusion of the LAD. Mean serum total CPK (CPK-t) and isozymes (mb-band) were measured before and up to 3 Hrs post-occlusion, as were various hemodynamic and mean precordial (21 lead) ST-segment and T-wave amplitudes. There was 14% less TMJU (p<0.05) and 41% less TMNW (p<0.01) in Group I compared to Group II. The mean % of CPK-mb/CPK-t decreased in I and increased in II over the 3 Hrs of observation. Mean HR decreased (p<0.01) in I compared to II at 3 Hrs postocclusion. The sum of the mean T-wave amplitudes from the precordial electrode sites was less in I at 3 Hrs. It is felt that ST-261 had a protective effect on the myocardium during acute myocardial infarction.

This paper describes measurements of the global turbulent consumption speed, ST,GC, of atmospheric pressure H2/CO flames at mean flow velocities and turbulence intensities up to U = 50 m/s and u′/SL = 100, respectively. The particular emphasis of the paper is to characterize H2/CO mixture properties upon turbulent flame speeds — a number of prior studies have noted that different fuels, with the same laminar flame speed and combusted in the same turbulent flow, can have widely different turbulent flame speeds. This effect is believed to be due to flame speed sensitivities to stretch and possibly thermo-diffusive instabilities. While this effect is widely known, little data are available for syngas blends. Turbulent flame speeds were obtained with blends ranging from 30–90% H2, with the mixture equivalence ratio, φ, adjusted at each fuel composition to have nominally the same laminar flame speed, SL. In addition, equivalence ratio sweeps at constant H2 level were also performed. The data clearly corroborate results from other studies that show significant sensitivity of ST,GC to fuel composition. In particular, at a fixed u′ and SL, values of ST,GC increase by almost a factor of 1.5–2 when H2 levels are increased from 30% (at φ = 0.59) to 90% (at φ = 0.46). Moreover, ST,GC in the 90% H2 case is 3 times larger than the φ = 0.9 CH4/air mixture with the same SL value. An important conclusion from this work is that fuel effects on ST,GC highlighted above are not simply a low turbulence intensity phenomenon — they clearly persist over the entire range of turbulence intensities used in the measurements.

Evapotranspiration (ET) estimation takes an important role in hydraulic designs and agricultural yield. Even it is non-negligible for hydraulic designers and irrigation engineers it is not clear enough to estimate or calculate ET because of direct and indirect parameters effects. In this study Solar Radiation (SR), Air Temperature (AT), Relative Humidity (RH) and Wind Speed (U) meteorological parameters are used to create a M5T model. 1158 daily RH, U, AT and SR records are used to create model and 385 daily values are used to test it. Data set is taken from St. Johns, Florida, USA weather station. The test set is also applied to the Ritchie empirical formula. M5T model and Ritchie formula Results are compared with daily ET records using determination coefficient. Determination coefficient is found 0.966 for M5T model and 0.913 for Ritchie formula. According to the determination coefficient, Mean Square Error (MSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) statistics, it is understood that M5T method can be used for daily ET estimation effectively.

The aim of this work is to provide insight into the state-of-the-art turbulent flame speed (ST) correlations and to determine the most appropriate correlations to use under different turbulent premixed combustion conditions. The accuracies of 16 correlations for ST are determined using a large volume of data over a range of conditions. Accuracy is based on a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). The comparison is completed once using the original authors’ adjustable parameters and a second time using parameters proposed by the current work that minimize MAPE for four different groups of data. Based on the results of the analysis using the newly-suggested parameters, the five most accurate correlations are then further examined to evaluate their respective abilities to predict trends under various turbulent conditions. While many correlations perform well over the range of data (MAPE < 33%), no single correlation can predict all experimentally-observed trends for methane flames under these conditions. Further issues are found when predicting trends for larger hydrocarbons; ethane and propane. Although low errors are again found (MAPE < 25%), correlations are not generally able to replicate the observed trends of experimental data for C2H6 and C3H8. While it is commonly accepted that no single correlation can accurately predict ST, this work has shown that the correlation derived by Muppala provides the closest overall agreement to the data examined. However it cannot be defined as a general correlation. For this reason the authors have proposed to continue development of an ST modeling tool based on a modified version of the Cantera 1D freely propagating laminar flame speed (SL) code. Greater cooperation in the ST research community to expand the range of available experimental data and better enable direct comparison of data and correlations from different experiments is also recommended.

Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were performed for Mach 0.9 and 1.3 cold jets to associate the structures of the shear layer with near field pressure fluctuations. The jets were excited by Localized Arc Filament Plasma Actuators (LAFPAs) arranged around the periphery of the nozzle with the axisymmetric (m = 0) mode. Excitation frequencies of St = fD/Uj = 0.05 to 0.25 (close to the column mode frequency) were computed for each Mach number. The St = 0.05 produces one pulse that propagates downstream without interacting with previously emitted pulses. This is referred to as the the impulse response. The St = 0.25 frequency exhibits subsequent pulse interactions. Simulation data for both Mach numbers was collected along three arrays at different radial locations. Strong agreement was found for the near field response to excitation and the mean center-line axial velocity between the subsonic simulations and the experiments. The experiment and simulations depict a large hydrodynamic wave downstream of the exit moving at the speed of convection near the shear layer consisting of a large peak followed by a large trough after the actuator pulse. For the highest excitation frequency, the interaction between structures yields an almost sinusoidal wave in the near field. These hydrodynamic waves are associated to the phase-averaged flow structure which includes a series of rollers and ribs and the associated dilatation field. The structure interactions from subsequent pulses results in a quasi-linear superposition of the impulse jet response (St = 0.05) to actuation. Auto-correlations and two-point correlations describe the development and interaction between adjacent structures in time and space.

It has been suggested that anomalous fluctuation phenomena found experimentally in dye lasers(1) can be due to fluctuations of the pump parameter. The schochastic dynamical model proposed is In appropriate units I is the intensity of the laser field and ∝ is the mean value of the pump parameter. The stochastic force ξ (t) models fluctuations of ∝. Away from the immediate vecinity of the instability point, ξ (t) can not be modeled by a white noise. We take for ξ (t) and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise with correlation <ξ (t) ξ (t')> = z-1 exp (-|t-t'|/z). Combustion instabilities continue to cause significant reliability and availability problems in low emissions gas turbine combustors. It is known that these instabilities are often caused by a self-exciting feedback loop between unsteady heat release rate and reactive mixture equivalence ratio perturbations. We present an analysis of the flame’s response to equivalence ratio perturbations by considering the kinematic equations for the flame front. This response is controlled by three processes: heat of reaction, flame speed, and flame area. The first two are directly generated by equivalence ratio oscillations. The third is indirect, as it is generated by the flame speed fluctuations. The first process dominates the response of the flame at low Strouhal numbers, roughly defined as frequency times flame length divided by mean flow velocity. All three processes play equal roles at Strouhal numbers of O(1). The mean equivalence ratio exerts little effect upon this transfer function at low Strouhal numbers. At O(1) Strouhal numbers, the flame response increases with decreasing values of the mean equivalence ratio. Thus, these results are in partial agreement with heuristic arguments made in prior studies that the flame response to equivalence ratio oscillations increases as the fuel/air ratio becomes leaner. In addition, a result is derived for the sensitivity of this transfer function to uncertainties in mean flame position. For example, a sensitivity of 10 means that a 5% uncertainty in flame position translates into a 50% uncertainty in transfer function. This sensitivity is of O(1) for St<<1, but has very high values for St∼O(1).

Megakaryocytes were grown from medullary progenitor cells using the plasma clot technique, with 5 % human serum and with or without 2,5 % PHA-LCM. Using this technique megakaryocyte cultures were done in 5 patients essential thrombocythemia (ET) ( platelet count :0,6 x 106 to 1,4 x 106 /μi) before chemotherapy and antiplatelet agents and in 2 patients with secondary thrombocytosis (ST) (platelet count : 0,65 x lO6 and 0,8 x 106 /μi) corrected after effective anti-bacterial or iron therapy. The results were as followsx number of colonies mean number (in brackets) of cells per colonyIt appears therefore that in ET, megakaryocyte progenitors grow without PHA-LCM and show however a better proliferation in its presence. On the contrary in ST, PHA-LCM is required for obtaining a 6 times increase of MK colonies. The effect of MK growth under chemotherapy is reported in some of the patients studied before treatment and results analyzed and compared to platelet function involvement
