This article represents the first stage of a research project dedicated to analyzing the structuration of Russian society throughout the period since the mid 1800’s and until this day. The timeline for part one includes the period up until 1917, while part two will be dedicated to Soviet and post-Soviet times. This article utilizes the methodology of A. Giddens, who suggested using the term “structuration” in order to analyze social relationships in space and time. This methodology implies examining structuration processes through the lens of those studies which were conducted during periods when radical shifts were occurring within the structure of Russian society. The main event which defined the direction for social change turned out to be the emancipation of the serfs in the Russian Empire, which lead to shifts in the population’s structure: accelerated development of a working class, social transformations in the village, and the advancement of internal migration in Russia. The article shows that in Russia these processes were accompanied by science, which included official agencies conducting population censuses, studying the composition and working conditions at factories and plants (this function was carried out by plant and manufactory inspectorates), as well as studies conducted by scientists and practitioners. The works of Nikolai Kalachov, N. Flerovsky, Evgeny Pogozhev, Mykhailo Tuhan-Baranovskyi and others aided in developing detailed social characteristics of workers and their position in the structure of society and at work. Studying the village (and consequently the largest social class – the peasants) was the prerogative of provincial councils. Comprehensive monographic studies were conducted by Piotr Semionov, Vassily Pokrovsky, Vassily Orlov, Piotr Chervinsky, Fedor Shcherbina, as well as other researchers. The article shows that the population’s structuration at the turn of the century in regards to the territorial aspect depended on resettlement and internal migration to a significant degree. Remarkable studies of this process were conducted by Denis Davydov, Evgeny Anuchin, Isaac Hourwich, Ivan Yamzin and other Russian scientists. Aside from scientists, practitioners also took part in these studies. The Russian intelligentsia actively partook in field research. The educated class’ efforts made it possible to attain valuable data on society’s structure, on the state of social relationships in Russia, migration processes, and the social characteristics of society’s key structural elements – peasants and workers.

Purpose During the first quarter of the twentieth century in Russia rapidly developed management thought, generated by many reasons, including socio-economic and political transformations, the results of scientific and practical activities of domestic and foreign experts in management. The purpose of this paper is, first, to acquaint readers with some of factors of the development of the history of Russian Management Thought in nineteenth century and at the beginning of twentieth century and, second, to present the most striking results of the formation of the History of Soviet Management Thought (SMT) in post-revolutionary Russia in the form of the movement of the so-called “The scientific organization of labor” (SOL), including “The scientific organization of managerial labor” (or SOML). Design/methodology/approach The review and causal analysis of the process of formation of the SMT and historiography of the SMT, a brief description of the institutions of SOL and SOMT and a comparative analysis of little-known works of some Russian authors on management topics of nineteenth century are chosen as research methods. Findings The paper emphasizes the action of objective historical inertia (or “non-Markoviness”) of the process of development of managerial thought, manifested, on the one hand, in the stable action of some management paradigms but, on the other hand, in identifying paradigmatic anomalies, in identifying the need for constant development of managerial thought, in the development of sought-after ideas and concepts of management, and even in the institutionalization of applied scientific research in the field of management throughout the country (in the form of SOL and SOML). Originality/value The paper attempts to attract the attention of researchers to the little-known Russian and Soviet authors and their little-known works in the field of management thought.

The article presents an analysis of scientific literature devoted to the study of the linguistic local history direction of language learning. The aim of the work is to describe the origins of Russian linguistic local history, regional onomastics based on the use of textological analysis, descriptive method, elements of comparative and comparative-historical methods. The material of the research is presented by works that have a linguistic local history character, starting from the 30s of 18th century. Based on the analysis of scientific works of the 18th and early 19th centuries, including the linguistic local history component, the author comes to the following conclusions. Since the first third of the 18th century in Russia, there have been some fragmentary attempts at linguistic local lore commenting when describing settlements by historians, geographers, physicians, and biologists who participated in research expeditions across Russia. Of particular importance in this respect was the historical and regional studies activities of V.N. Tatishchev, who compiled detailed questions for the study of settlements in Russia, prepared the first part of the “Lexicon of Russian historical, geographical, political and civil”. The material of the research shows that the origins of scientific linguistic regional studies in Russia are associated with the activities of V.K. Trediakovsky and M.V. Lomonosov. M.V. Lomonosov consistently introduced the linguistic local history component into the research methodology, which was applied in practice in the compilation of the “Russian grammar”, in the organization of centralized work on the historical and geographical study of Russian settlements, in the development of the foundations of teaching Russian students in their native language. M.V. Lomonosov is the founder of the linguistic local history direction in Russian linguistics. The beginning of scientific regional onomastic research is associated with the activities of E.A. Bolkhovitinov, who for the first time in 1800 gave a detailed historical and linguistic description of the toponymy and microtoponymy of the Voronezh Territory.

The article deals with the problem of the creative method and style of A.P. Chekhov in the mid-1880s. The analysis is based on the development of the methodology of P.N. Sakulin, who developed the concept of two methods / styles of creativity: realism and unrealism. A controversy is being conducted with those literary critics who saw in Chekhov only a realist, alien to new aesthetic currents and trends in art of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, and opposed him to D. Merezhkovsky, Z. Gippius, Vl. Solovyev and decadence and symbolism in general, were affirmed the irreligious nature of his work. It is concluded that Chekhov stepped over the heads of seekers of a new faith and adherents of its subjective interpretations, returning to national historical and cultural foundations. Elements of irrationalism in his prose become carriers of spiritual realism, which in its entirety manifested itself later, in the works of I. Shmelev, B. Zaitsev, N. Gumilyov, A. Akhmatova.

In essence, this article will focus on the subject classical Malay fiqh works 1600-1800. Classical Malay fiqh works are Malay intellectual works produced by Malay Muslim scholars in various topics of Islamic law including worship (ibadah), commercial transaction law (muamalah), family law (munakahat) and others. This fiqh Malay work played an important role in Malay society at the beginning of Islamic development in the Malay world. It is a means of communication, scientific knowledge or developmental science. The premise of this article analyzes the writing of fiqh works that developed in the early days of the great intellectual nature of the Malay world. There are features of fiqh writing in the year 1600 and it is different from the features of fiqh writing in 1700 and 1800. The discussion of this writing includes the difference between the writing text and the style of writing fiqh and being reviewed from various scopes, items and writing features. The method of analysis used is the method of historiography or historicalism which examines the development of an idea. Facts obtained will be thoroughly screened using the Malay induction history approach. Research shows that the earliest classic Malay fiqh writing has its own identity and superiority and is a Malay intellectual work.

This article discusses the reception of Kepler’s work in the earliest interpretations of the history of astronomy, which appeared in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The focus is not on the reception of Kepler’s work among astronomers themselves but instead on its significance for the history of science as seen by early historians of mathematics and astronomy. The first section discusses the evaluation of Kepler in the so-called “Prefatory Histories” of astronomy that appeared in various astronomical works during the seventeenth century. In these, Kepler was considered mainly to be the person who brought the work of Tycho Brahe to completion, rather than an original astronomer. The second section is devoted to the evaluation of Kepler in interpretations of the history of astronomy that appeared in the eighteenth century (often as part of the history of mathematics). In these works, Kepler is regarded as a genius who deserves tremendous credit for the advancement of the human spirit. Both sections also devote attention to Copernicus and Tycho Brahe because this facilitates the explanation of how Kepler’s contribution was judged. By studying the reception of Johannes Kepler’s work, we may gain greater insight into the transition from a cyclical perception of the history of science to the progressive model.

Ann Radcliffe’s novels were extremely popular in early nineteenth-century Russia. Publication of her work in Russian translation propelled the so-called gothic wave of 1800-10. Yet, many of the works Radcliffe was known for in Russia were not written by her; rather, they were works by others that were attributed to Radcliffe. This article traces the publication and translation histories of Radcliffiana on the Russian book market of 1800-20. Building on JoEllen DeLucia’s concept of a “corporate Radcliffe” in the anglophone world, this article proposes a Russian corporate Radcliffe. Identifying, classifying, and analysing the provenance of Russian corporate Radcliffe works reveals insight into the transnational circulation of texts and the role of copyright law within it, the nature of the early nineteenth-century Russian book market, the rise of popular reading and advertising in Russia, and the gendered nature of critical discourse at this time. The Russian corporate Radcliffe assures the legacy and influence of Radcliffe in later Russian literature and culture, although a Radcliffe that represents much more than just the English author. Exploring the Russian corporate Radcliffe expands our understanding of early nineteenth-century Russian literary history through specific case studies that demonstrate the significant role played by both women writers and translation, an aspect of this history that is often overlooked.

The article explores the diaries of the Kyivan Metropolitan Serapion (Alexandrovsky) as a historical source, written by him in 1804-1824. They serve as one of the main sources for studying the development of church building in Kyiv at the beginning of the nineteenth century. These diaries were studied by historians in the nineteenth century, but were only partially published. At the same time, they retain a significant amount of information related to the daily life of the city, the status of certain church monuments, church building, etc. Metropolitan paid particular attention in his diaries to the state and development of the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery. During 1803-1822, Serapion (Alexandrovsky) (1747-1824) served as Metropolitan of Kyiv. He simultaneously performed the functions of the archimandrite of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Historians paid him little attention to him. About him wrote E. Bolkhovitinov, V. Askochenski, Ph. Ternovsky, V. Ikonnikov, D. Blazheiovsky and others. After Serapion's death, there were a few tabs of personal diaries. In them, the Metropolitan recorded his daily activities and impressions of the events that took place with him and around him. His diaries were the subject of scientific research in the nineteenth century. The greatest interest is the information concerning the state of Lavra caves in the early nineteenth century. These are the records of the Metropolitan on emergency situations and the elimination of their consequences. Emergency situations on long caves obviously did not arise. Information about the temples over the caves tells about the construction works, and only occasionally - in connection with other events or situations. The diaries also contain curious information about the caves. Metropolitan Serapion can also be considered the first tour guide in Kyiv. Lavra caves appear in diaries as one of the main locations of Kyiv as a city. And to this day they still remain unexplored. They are stored at the Institute of Manuscripts of the Central Scientific Library National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine of V.I. Vernadsky. Especially a lot of space in the recordings was given under the description of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Often in these messages are mentioned from different sides and Lavra caves. The study distinguishes three types of information about the caves: a description of their condition, a description of temples over them and information of a tangential nature. There is a special interest Metropolitan Serapion in the caves. Indicates the variability of the information recorded in his diaries. Emphasizes its religious character. At the same time, it is noted that the caves were an important geographical location of the life of the population of the city of Kyiv. The purpose of the study is to introduce new information on the history of the caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery to the scientific circulation. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, systemicity, science, concreteness, comprehensiveness and objectivity.

AbstractThis paper outlines the development of world trade from 1800 to 1938. It relies on a newly compiled database, which, unlike previous works (e.g. Lewis 1981), reports series of imports and exports at current and constant prices and at current and constant (1913) borders for almost all existing polities. In the first sections, we outline the estimation methodology and assess the reliability of the series (now available athttp://www.uc3m.es/tradehist_db). World trade grew very fast throughout the «long» 19thcentury, but growth rates were higher before 1870. We measure the effects of war and the Great Depression on total trade and trade by continent and polity. Within this general upward trend, the performance of polities differed by geographical location, level of development, political status and factor endowment. Finally, we estimate trends in the share of primary products, which declined until World War One, with an acceleration in the second half of the 19thcentury.

Swedish Short Stories in the Early 19th Century. Publication and Subgenres The present study of Swedish short stories published between the years 1810 and 1829 illustrates that authors representing the Romantic Movement made special efforts to put the short story on the market. At V. F. Palmblad’s publishing house, German contemporary short stories were translated and distributed, later followed by Swedish contributions to the genre, which appeared primarily in literary magazines. Only a small number of short stories were published over the course of these 19 years, and the means of publication varied. Out of 45 works found in the catalogues of the National Library of Sweden, 27 are published separately, while 14 are published in periodicals or newspapers and two in anthologies (one of which is a frame story and the other a modern collection). Authors connected to the Romantic school introduced two new varieties of short story: the exotic story and the fantastic story. The pre-existing subgenres included, for instance: adventures, satirical or comic stories, stories of family life, travel stories and historical short stories. Among these, the historical story was the only subgenre to be printed separately. Characteristic for the short story is its ability to be inserted into many different kinds of publications. Another result of the study is the discovery of the ease with which a short story may be transferred from one form of publication to another. For instance, the short story may originate as part of a novel, only to turn into a separate work in its own right. Alternatively, it may develop as a serial story in a newspaper and go on to be printed separately, and later appear in a publishing house series or in a volume of selected works. This adaptive, or transferable, quality should be included in the ongoing discussion pertaining to the definition of the short story.

This study comprises two distinct sections. The first part is a study in the origins and methodology of Saint Jerome's Excerpta de Psalterio; and the second part a first translation into English of the Latin text, which is printed in the Corpus Christianorum Series Latina. In the first part, (the dissertation), I have arranged my research into three chapters. The first tackles the history of the Excerpta text, its title(s), and the question of Jerome's authorship. In this chapter I was particularly interested to research the links between this work and another by Origen, whom many scholars have suggested is the true author of the Excerpta. The second chapter takes a look at the educational background and situation of Jerome in the history of Biblical interpretation. Then it moves on to a more particular examination of Jerome's interpretative technique in the Excerpta. One of the aims of this chapter was to try to see Jerome's technique both as heavily indebted to, and yet innovatively building upon the work of other previous and contemporary Biblical interpreters. The third chapter examines in detail some of the characteristic uses of Hebrew words in Jerome's works, with an aim to assessing Saint Jerome's level of understanding of the Hebrew language. This is done with a view to reviewing the Excerpta in a new light, which takes into account all the linguistic work done by Jerome and not by Origen. This goes some way to clarifying dispute over the authorship of the work in question. This is followed by the Translation, the first (known) into English from the Latin of the CCSL, including footnotes and biblical references.

The goal of this thesis is a critical edition of the Secrets des femmes, a text attributed to Arnold de Vilanova. In the exegetic tradition, this attribution has been widely argued. Our preliminary findings lead to the same conclusions. The text composed in French couldn't have been written by Vilanova, who would have composed it in Latin, the language of the "clerks", or in Catalan, his first language. Critical tradition shows that the Secrets des femmes is based on three manuscripts. But we have demonstrated that the Mazarine's manuscript is not at the base of this work, but rather of a text entitled Les Termes et secrets des femmes. For the critical edition, which is the objective of our study, there is no doubt that the Arsenal's text is the basic manuscript, while the Vatican's manuscript is the Arsenal's metalanguage.

This dissertation is generally concerned with Plato's conception of philosophy, as the conception is ascertainable from the Republic and certain ‘post-Republic' dialogues. It argues that philosophy, according to Plato, is multi-disciplinary; that ‘philosophy' does not mark off just one art or science; that there are various philosophers corresponding to various philosophical sciences, all of which come together under a common aim: betterment of self through intellectual activity. A major part of this dissertation is concerned with Plato's science par excellence, ‘the science of dialectic' (he epistêmê dialektikê). The science of dialectic is distinguished in Plato by being concerned with Forms or Kinds as such; the science of dialectic, alone amongst the philosophical sciences, fully understands what it means for Form X to be a Form. I track the science of dialectic, from its showcase in Republic VI and VII, and analyze its place in relation to the other philosophical sciences in certain post-Republic dialogues. Ultimately, I show that, whilst it is not the only science constituting philosophy, Plato's science of dialectic represents the intellectual zenith obtainable by man; the expert of this science is the topmost philosopher. In this dissertation I also argue that Socrates, as variously depicted in these dialogues, always falls short of being identified as the philosopher par excellence, as that expert with positive knowledge of Forms as such. Yet I also show that, far from being in conflict, the elenctic Socrates and the philosopher par excellence form a complementary relationship: the elenctic philosopher gets pupils to think about certain things in the right way prior to sending them off to work with the philosopher par excellence.

Kotarcic, Ana. "Aristotle's concept of lexis : a theory of language and style". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7754.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Aristotle's concept of lexis has been discussed by numerous scholars, yet no comprehensive account of lexis has been produced so far. To fill this gap in scholarship, this thesis offers a systematic analysis of Aristotle's concept of lexis by dividing it into three levels, which allow a step-by-step approach to understanding this multi-layered concept. By considering Plato's and Isocrates' thoughts on lexis, Chapter 1 outlines the intellectual context in which Aristotle's ideas on the concept of lexis developed. Chapters 2-5 focus on the three levels of lexis and Chapter 6 brings a concluding discussion of metaphor. In Chapter 2 the linguistic elements treated under the notion of lexis and Aristotle's theory of language are delineated. These not only present Aristotle's thoughts on language as an abstract system, but they also form the most fundamental level upon which the remainder of Aristotle's thoughts on the concept of lexis are based. Chapter 3 explores Aristotle's remarks regarding individuals' use of linguistic elements as determined by sociolinguistic factors. Aristotle's occasional statements about language usage within the concept of lexis provide valuable pieces of evidence for studies in sociolinguistics and for his ideas on lexis on its third level as discussed in Chapters 4 and 5. In Chapter 4 the intra-textual aspect of Aristotle's remarks on lexis as a means for the creation of different kinds of poetry and rhetoric, i.e. lexis as technē, is examined. In Chapter 5 extra-textual factors are considered and are followed by a discussion of the purpose and function of lexis on its third level. Chapter 6 concludes the discussion of lexis by focusing on metaphor, the linguistic and stylistic element par excellence treated under the notion of lexis, which further highlights the benefits of a three-level approach to Aristotle's concept of lexis.

In this account of the pan that heat plays in the conception and development of living substances according to Aristotle, I begin by examining the concept of heat. I discover that Aristotle uses a distinction between to thermon and thermotes: the former is, in living substances, material; the latter is never material, being the powerful aspect of heat. For example, an animal possesses heat (to thermon) which maintains it through its power (thermotes) to concoct. I then turn to the biological works. Conception, it seems, does not fit the standard account of change, but is rather a concoction, performed by the heat of the semen. Nor is the usual account of conception ascribed to Aristotle adequate: I attempt to demonstrate that he held a more moderate account in which pneuma, the nature of which is to thermon, is transmitted to the embryo. I then examine the development of the embryo, which is performed using to thermon as a tool. The transmission and development of the rational psuche in particular has often caused problems: I offer an account of the transmission of psuche from parent to embryo, and describe the part that pneuma plays in this transmission and in the development and operation of the various levels of psuche. Development extends from foetal development until adulthood, and this poses another problem for the standard account of change as it appears to be neither substantial nor accidental change, yet these are apparently exhaustive possibilities. I conclude that development, like conception, is a concoction performed by the vital heat. Finally, I turn to the conception and development of spontaneously generated animals, and of abnormal animals such as monsters. I demonstrate the relationship between these generations and sexual generation, and the significance of heat and pneuma.

Among the vast assembly of Biblical mythology, the tower of Babel stands as an exclusive representation of the limits of human endeavor. As a paradigmatic extremity, it circumscribes the field of civic artifice. Babel is the absolute limit, and in that regard, its presence is enduring and timeless. The legacy of exegetic readings are textual shades, emanating from the point source of the paradigm. Athanasius Kircher's Turris Babel is an appropriate and intentional unfolding of this condition.
Firstly, that in the awakening of the Baroque scholar to history, origin materializes as the sole legitimate chronological reference.
Secondly, that the paradigmatic extremities collapse into the empirical standard of the theoretical discourse.
This thesis is a speculative study of architecture, drawn through Turris Babel, in the shadow of the paradigmatic limits of Babel. Written in three parts, each dealing with the implications of artifice in confrontation with the post-Babel adversaries of dispersion, tyranny, and decay.

AbstractThe dynamic nature of an early childhood education workplace is a challenging one that continuously seeks to test educators*, and therefore it is common for them to consistently seek to improve their knowledge, skills, and competencies. Amongst the myriad of different professional development strategies that exist to help early childhood educators with their professional development, how might we capture teacher development? How do we authentically capture this dynamic context and make visible how teacher practices change and teachers themselves develop? One tradition has been to undertake pre- and post-surveys. Yet this method does not in itself bring out what Vygotsky (The collected works of L. S. Vygotsky (Vol. 5. Child psychology) (Rieber, R. W. (Ed.)). Plenum Press, 1998) theorised as the idea of a developmental ‘crisis’. Further, teacher development was never the focus of Vygotsky’s theory of human development. This chapter provides insights into how this can be achieved through a cultural-historical re-conceptualisation of pre- and post-survey design which includes a series of data collection points over time within and across dynamic practices of a professional development program that was simultaneously challenging and motivating for teachers.

This chapter begins with an overview of the translation of Russian literature in China and of Fedor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881) in particular. It next examines two translators Geng Jizhi and Lu Xun, whose work respectively demonstrates the value of microhistorical methodology in translation history (Geng) and the difficulty of assimilating Dostoevsky’s philosophy into the Chinese cultural mode (Lu Xun). The early twentieth century witnessed the gradual reception of Dostoevsky in China, including the publication and introduction of his short stories in newspapers. Originally, English translations were the primary intermediary for Dostoevsky’s works in China. Not until the 1940s was the first translation directly from Russian completed by the translator Geng Jizhi. Chinese scholars and readers creatively misread some of Dostoevsky’s ideas; their adaptations of his work reflected their own social status and cultural milieu. Due to the dominant theme of ‘literature for life’ in early twentieth-century China, Chinese scholars positioned Dostoevsky as ‘a realist writer’. Hence their choices for translation and research mainly served pressing nationalist ideological principles. Partly because of Dostoevsky’s strong religious sensibility, a gap persists between his gloomy, laboured style and traditional Chinese cultural promotion of gentleness and generosity in aesthetics, thus distancing Chinese readers from his writing. Dostoevsky’s interpretation and promotion by the important Chinese writer Lu Xun (1881-1936) transformed the former’s reception in twentieth-century China. His articles ‘An Introduction to Poor Folk’ and ‘Something about Dostoevsky’ sent Chinese Dostoevsky research in a new direction.

AbstractAround 1800, merchants, scientists and adventurers travelled to Latin America with different purposes. Their multifaceted interests in a world region, experiencing a threshold of independence from Spanish colonial rule, inspired new historical and political works about the continent’s recent past. The Enlightenment provided not only the philosophical armamentarium against corruption, but it also paved the way to a new expression of sentiments and to the loss of fear when addressing injustice. Some examples of these are Hipólito Villaroel’s list of grievances and Humboldt’s Political essay. These two authors provide some thoughts on the political landscape of New Spain (now Mexico), while the two Swiss physicians Rengger and Longchamp describe the ruthless and odd dictator Francia of independent Paraguay as a champion of anti-corruption. Finally, Argentine dictator Rosas—and his robberies as described by Rivera Indarte, Sarmiento and other anonymous authors—represent the embodiment of corruption through pure larceny, for whose crimes the Spanish colonial past apparently no longer served as a comparison.

Abstract The story of early music performance in nineteenth-century France has no clear beginning. Instead, it arises from eighteenth-century traditions that persisted despite changing ideologies brought by the Revolution, the Empire, the Restoration, and the July Monarchy. The new century saw a small number of works between 2 5 and 65 years old by Pergolesi, Durante, Jommelli, Rousseau, and Rameau (the latter heavily diluted)-survive the turmoil of the 1790s and achieve a place in the repertories of Paris’s leading musical institutions: the recently opened Conservatoire, the concerts spirituels, and the Opera.

Harriet Martineau (1802–76), recognised as one of the founders of sociology, was one of the most prolific professional female writers in the nineteenth century. Martineau wrote over 2,000 articles in her lifetime, published over a dozen books on a wide range of topics, and earned sufficient income from her work to support herself financially. Her Illustrations of Political Economy (1832), which sought to make the complex ideas of Adam Smith, Robert Malthus, David Ricardo, James Mill, and John Stuart Mill more accessible to popular audiences, was enormously successful. In her three-volume study Society in America (1837) Martineau affirmed her commitment to abolitionism and support for early women’s rights. How to Observe: Morals and Manners (1838) contained an extended exploration of her method of observation. Her novel Deerbrook (1839) explored the complex interrelationships between individuals, households, and communities. The Hour and the Man (1841), based on the life of Toussaint L’Ouverture, leader of the Haitian Revolution, further reinforced her abolitionist views. Martineau’s translation and abridgment of Auguste Comte’s six-volume work Positive Philosophy (1853) provided another opportunity to fine-tune her own methodology. Seen largely as a ‘populariser’ of ideas espoused by more prominent thinkers, Martineau is increasingly recognised for her own philosophical and theoretical contributions.

Abstract The short Monologen (1800) and the broad Grundlinien einer Kritik der bisherigen Sittenlehre (1803) argue for an ethical perspective based on mutually “formative” (bildende) interactions between individuals and communities as well as between peculiarity and universality. Whereas in the Monologen this perspective is presented in an “effusive” and “evocative” style, the Grundlinien develop it at a theoretically deeper level, detailing an impressive systematic confrontation with ancient, modern, and contemporaneous philosophers. The Vertraute Briefe über die Lucinde von Schlegel (1800) also consider conjugal love and the relationship of sexes from a “formative” ethical perspective. There are some differences between these early works and the later writings, both in an attenuation of the more “ideal” and “prophetic” aspects and in an accentuation of the “institutional” and “pragmatic” ones; however, the republications of the Monologen until 1829 and the systematic relationships between the Grundlinien and the late academic papers demonstrate a specific continuity on important basic principles of Schleiermacher’s “formative” ethical thought.

Abstract The press was an integral part of the religious revival that swept through early modern Ireland but the different doctrinal, political, and pastoral priorities that separated the reforming agencies, Catholic and Protestant, ensured that the book functioned in confessionally distinctive ways. For reforming Catholics, the encounter with God took place primarily through the sacraments, administered, in Latin, by a trained priest.² Here the potential of the press lay in modernizing the inherited devotional system, largely by providing the clergy with catechetical and homeletical material and supplying the laity with works of piety. For reforming Protestants, on the other hand, God was encountered in the Scriptures, a fact that tied the success of their mission to the provision of the vernacular Bible and form of service.

Abstract The chapter develops a genealogy of the epistemological paradigms present in private law scholarship since the nineteenth century. It identifies a recurring pattern of three epistemic pathways to legal knowledge, namely the normative, descriptive, and analytical methods. These paradigms have emerged in various combinations since 1800. In particular, they have shaped three methodologically pivotal phases of private law scholarship: the German Historical School prevalent in the first half of the nineteenth century, the analytical scientism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the turn to the ‘conflicting considerations’ mode of legal argument and the ‘jurisprudence of values’ in the second half of the twentieth century. Based on these historical findings, the chapter describes the three epistemic pathways as concurring and recurring models of private law methodology and shows that there is no one ‘right’ methodological approach to private law.

Abstract THE first sign that times were beginning to change was an advertisement on 4 August 1770 by van Ghelen, publisher of the Wienerisches Diarium, for nearly a whole column’s worth of music imported from Paris. It included keyboard works by the London composers J. C. Bach and C. F. Abel, as well as ‘6 Airs Opera Comique’ by Mlle Bayon. The music by Bach and Abel was exclusively for ‘clavicembalo’ or ‘clavecin’, but a repeat advertisement for Bayou’s ‘Airs’ adds that they were ‘arranges pour le Biano forte ou le Clavecin’: this is apparently the first music advertised in Vienna that was intended for the new instrument. Van Ghelen continued for the next few years to advertise music published in Paris and elsewhere; the bookseller Kruchten quickly followed his lead, and by 1776 (possibly 1774) was advertising music from London publishers as well (see App. D). Much of this imported music named the piano as an alternative to the harpsichord, 1 the former instrument being well established in London, and probably also Paris, by the early 1770s.

Process planning is a key product development activity that links design and manufacturing, and is traditionally carried out based on the outcome of the design process. One of the consequences of conducting process planning after design is that the process planning (manufacturability) information needed in the execution of upstream activities is in most cases not available formally. Using informal manufacturability information in the early phases of the product development process can lead to e.g. untrustworthy feasibility study or unnecessary design iterations. As an attempt to solve this problem, a modular procedure for execution of process planning activities is proposed in this paper. It allows for the execution of some of the process planning activities to commence as soon as the details of the order and the requirements for the product are known. The goal is to ensure that formal manufacturability information is available in various stages of the product development process, including to those activities that take place prior to process planning. The new modular process planning procedure has been applied, and it has been found that the design iterations caused by lack of manufacturability information can be avoided. This paper first defines the problem and presents related works. It then introduces the modular process planning procedure, and presents an application case study.

Abstract A new approach was implemented to confirm the start of ductile tearing relative to assessments by other methods such as direct-current Electric Potential (d-c EP) method in coupon specimens. This approach was developed on the Key-Curve methodology by Ernst/Joyce and is similar to the ASTM E-1820 Load Normalization procedure used to determine J-R curves directly from load versus Load-Line Displacement (LLD) record of the test specimen. It is consistent with Deformation Plasticity relationships for fully plastic behavior. Using this Experimental Key-Curve method, crack initiation can be determined directly from load versus LLD data or load versus Crack-Mouth Opening Displacement (CMOD) obtained from a fracture test without the need for additional instrumentation required for crack initiation detection. It is based on the fact that plastic deformation of homogeneous metals at the crack tip follows a power-law function until the crack tearing initiates. Crack tearing initiation is determined at the point where the power-law fit to the load versus plastic part of CMOD or LLD curve deviates from the total experimental load versus plastic-CMOD or LLD curve. The procedure for fitting of the data requires some care to be exercised such that the fitted data is beyond the elastic region and early small-scale plastic region of the Load-CMOD or Load-LLD curve but include data before crack initiation. An iterative regression analysis was done to achieve this, which is shown in this paper. The iterative fitting in this region typically results with a coefficient of determination (R2) values that are greater than 0.990. This method can be either used in conjunction with other methods such as direct-current Electric Potential (d-c EP) or unloading-compliance methods as a secondary (or primary) confirmation of crack tearing initiation (and even for crack growth); or can be used alone when other methods cannot be used. Furthermore, when using instrumentation methods for determining crack-initiation such as d-c EP method in a fracture toughness test, it is good to have a secondary confirmation of the initiation point in case of instrumentation malfunction or high signal to noise ratio in the measured d-c EP signals. In addition, the Experimental Key-Curve procedure provides relatively smooth data for the fitting procedure, while unloading-compliance data when used to get small crack growth values frequently has significant variability, which is part of the reason that JIC by ASTM E1820 is determined using an offset with some growth past the very start of ductile tearing. In this work, the Experimental Key-Curve method had been successfully used to determine crack tearing initiation and demonstrate the applicability for different fracture toughness specimen geometries such as SEN(T), and C(T) specimens. In all the cases analyzed, the Experimental Key-Curve method gave consistent results that were in good agreement with other crack tearing initiation measuring method such as d-c EP but seemed to result in less scatter.

Industrial energy systems involve many components where fluid flow, heat and mass transfer are the important transport processes. For design and development as well as investigation of innovative ideas, computational methods are of vital importance. Since the early pioneering works (by, e.g., the Spalding group) in the 1960s and 1970s, the development has been tremendous and nowadays CFD (computational fluid dynamics) is an established methodology. During the same time period computer capacities in addition have been brought extensively forward. Although still many topics need further development, applications to industrial problems are constantly increasing. In this paper examples of computational heat transfer, fluid flow and related transport phenmena applied to plate heat exchangers (PHEs), gas turbine heat transfer, and fuel cells are highlighted.

A combustor is a crucial unit of gas turbine engine because it should work reliably at high temperatures; provide a suitable temperature distribution at entry to the turbine and supply a low emission level of harmful substances. An operational development of combustors is a very complex process, involving a great volume of design and experimental work. The application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods allows to decrease the volume of experimental works on operational development of combustors and to make changes to the design of combustors on early stages. This paper describes development and validation of CFD-based analysis methodology, used to predict NOx emission level for different types of gas turbine combustors. This methodology includes comprehensive modeling of physical and chemical processes that take place in gas turbine combustors: turbulent flow of reacting gases, heat transfer, chemical kinetics and formation of nitric oxide. To simulate these processes the following mathematical models were used and validated: • Navier-Stockes equations; k-ε RNG, k-ε RSM, k-ω SST turbulence models; • Flamelet and Flamefront combustion models; • Different chemical kinetics mechanisms, describing methane and aviation kerosene oxidation processes; • Diffusion radiation model and discrete ordinates method to calculate radiation heat fluxes; • Extended n-heptane oxidation mechanism to simulate PAH and soot formation; • Prompt and thermal NO formation mechanisms; • Wide band exponential model for gases and empirical correlation for soot to calculate radiation properties of medium. Different factors that affect NOx formation process are considered. They include O and OH prediction methods, influence of radiation heat transfer, and choice of combustion and turbulence models. Developed methodology was used to simulate combustion process in gas turbine combustors that use RQL, LPP, wet NO technologies of low NOx combustion. Merits, demerits and peculiarities of considered low NOx combustion technologies are discussed. According to the results of the analysis, the most efficient technology for NOx reduction was selected.

Abstract The article will have the proposal to develop a study on the relationship between psychoanalysis and education as an educational practice in Early Childhood Education, considering that the educational model is undergoing transformations due to the advancement of technology, political changes and innovations of globalization. The objective of the work is to reflect on the importance of the concept of Pedanalysis as an instrument that allows working with the learning process and the stages of development of children. The methodology will encompass a bibliographical review, based on specialized literature on the subject in question, in the quest to present the theoretical framework and how such works contribute to building a human, technical and meaningful teaching. The bibliographic content covers a set of authors and professionals in the field of psychology, education and psychoanalysis, in this case: Brenner (1987), Hal; Layton (2013); Lindsey (1984); Siqueira (2003); Shultz (1992); Tales (2001); Taquette (2013). In this way, research is of paramount importance to offer an investigation tool that makes it possible to identify conflicts, emotions and problematic behavior in childhood, which is capable of bringing a sensitive look to the level of learning difficulties and to intervene in such situations. situations that occur in the classroom. It was concluded that the value of the object is to think about the existing connection between pedagogy and psychoanalytic action as a method that allows explaining certain conflicts in the school environment and working on the subjectivity of students.

In response to the Paris Agreement with its Climate Action Plan 2030+, The Hong Kong government aims at 26% to 36% absolute carbon reduction by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. As the construction industry accounts for a significant amount of carbon emission, engineering practitioners have begun searching for ways to reduce the industry’s impacts through greener construction processes. Understanding and assessing the carbon footprint of the construction process enables benchmarking how “green” currently our works are. It provides insights on areas for improvement including reducing carbon emissions. While the methodology of carbon footprint assessment has been developed and adopted for superstructure, the same for underground elements such as foundations have yet been discussed and proposed. This is due to the great variety of substructure, the uniqueness of geological and geotechnical conditions in different regions, as well as the influence of local practices and regulations. The above makes the standardization and benchmarking of carbon emissions for substructure a challenge. In this paper, the authors attempt to develop a strategy for the assessment of embodied carbon on substructures in Hong Kong. Current obstacles and difficulties, as compared to those for other structures and structural elements are discussed. A strategy to look into the carbon footprint systematically and logically for foundations is then proposed and explained. The authors discuss possibilities to reduce and optimise carbon footprint of foundation works through careful decisions in early-stage planning, design, and construction control.

Ambition, innocently defined as ‘something one ardently desires to achieve,’ by the Oxford Learners Dictionary, harbors a paradoxical trait - its capacity for peril when taken to excess. This enigma finds early expression in the myth of Icarus, whose disregard for moderation led to his tragic demise. Across the annals of English literature, from the Renaissance to the Modern era, this theme of ambition’s double-edged sword echoes prominently. Works like Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragedy of Dr. Faustus, the Shakespearean tragedies both Macbeth and Julius Caeser straddling the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, Mary Shelley’s Romantic masterpiece Frankenstein, Emily Bronte’s enduring classic Wuthering Heights from the Victorian era, and Arthur Miller’s Modern American drama Death of a Salesman all serve as vivid canvases depicting the havoc wrought by unchecked ambition. This paper examines the motivations and consequences of unrestrained ambition, highlighting the importance of moderation in pursuing one’s goals. Applying a qualitative methodology rooted in textual analysis, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of overreaching ambition on literary characters and its reflection on society.

Infrastructures are essential for the development and flourishing of countries; in this context, bridges play an irreplaceable role as links for goods and people. Nowadays, their structural integrity is threatened by ageing and increased traffic loads: according to the American Society of Civil Engineering, 42% of US bridges are at least 50 years old. The extension of the problem requires the application of techniques for resource prioritization and effective interventions. Structural health monitoring (SHM) has emerged as a promising quantitative tool for ensuring infrastructural network resilience and optimizing maintenance. In particular, damage detection is crucial in preventing catastrophic failures and minimizing repair costs. However, the influence of exogenous factors on sensor signals often complicates the identification of damage, since they might hide the insurgence of structural anomalies. The problem is especially critical when dealing with early-stage damage, characterized by a small extension. Among such external variables, temperature, in particular, significantly disturbs SHM both on seasonal and daily levels. The latter is further exacerbated by the thermal inertia of bridges, which renders the structural behavior highly non-linear with respect to temperature and solar radiation. This study proposes a novel approach to enhance the identification capability of structural health monitoring systems by removing the temperature effect on static measures thanks to a statistical learning algorithm. In particular, signals from inclinometers and LVDTs collected for a year are considered for temperature influence removal. The method works according to a two-step process described in Figure 1. First, the seasonal dependence is removed; then, the daily influence of temperature and solar radiation is treated by exploiting a machine learning algorithm able to estimate the structural response delay caused by thermal inertia. The methodology herein presented is applied and tested on two railway bridges: a Warren truss steel bridge and a CACP bridge with simply-supported spans. In both case studies, the variability of the measured signals associated with temperature reduced substantially. Indeed, the correlation coefficients dropped close to zero, and the standard deviation of signals diminished by 80% on average. Moreover, the different structural characteristics of the two test cases proved the methodology effective and versatile, suitable for different typologies of bridges. The algorithm described in this work enhances the damage detection power of structural health monitoring systems and fits with the idea of SHM deployment on a larger scale, given its successful application to diverse structural archetypes.

Abstract This work describes a comprehensive approach to tackle systemic failure in gas lift valves in pre-salt wells. Failure analyses in gas lift valves were performed after unexpected early failures leading to tubing-annulus communication. Understanding the root causes of this problem generates value for assets, increasing equipment life, preventing unnecessary workover, and reducing costs. Suspect failed valves are systematically removed from the wells, usually by slick-line workovers, and brought to an onshore workshop, where their integrity and mechanical functionality can be analyzed. The valve's run life, equipment model and manufacturer, annular fluid, flow through the gas lift valve, operational pressure and temperature, composition of reservoir fluids and solids deposition were verified. Besides, transient simulations were carried out to provide insights on the root causes of the failure. Also, a good understanding on how each valve works, including its engineering design, was necessary to thoroughly understand the failure process. The study of gas-lift injection valves early failure in pre-salt wells have been an excellent way to understand the life cycle of production wells before the need to start lift gas injection. That leads to a comprehensive understanding about the effects of the fluids left in annulus and have supported Petrobras in most effectively managing of well integrity and workover costs. The analysis incorporates the impact of oil production, water cut, completion type, annular fluid composition, anti-scaling fluid injection (composition and efficiency) and the differential pressure between the tubing of the annulus in the valve failure model. The composition of the deposit found inside the valves and the production history of the well were essential to assemble the puzzle of how the failure mechanism works. With the acquired knowledge, it has been possible to apply barriers to avoid future events of unwanted tubing-annulus communication arising from gas-lift valve failures. This article provides a methodology and examples for a most effective understanding of the gas-lift valves failure mechanisms and their root causes, which proved to be a valuable tool for the artificial lift design and for the planning of well operations. That has contributed to maximize equipment life, cost reduction and, at last, generating value for the company.
