Abstract The Roman Catholic Church, the Church of England and the British Methodist Church have retained or restored the diaconate. These diaconates remain distinctive and capable of further change. This article uses a receptive ecumenical approach to ask what the Roman Catholic Church can learn or receive with integrity from the diaconate in the Church of England and British Methodism. The first section examines the reassessment of the diaconate of service by John N. Collins. The next two sections explore specific learning opportunities from the Church of England Distinctive Diaconate and the British Methodist Diaconal Order. The fourth section examines the way that British Methodism has become alert to the possibilities of unhealthy notions of diaconal service. The final section explores work towards the interchangeability of deacons, concluding that, in the development of the diaconate, the current historical moment provides opportunities for ecclesial learning and perhaps a step towards visible unity.

This study was designed to investigate the comparative ego development, religious orientation, and doctrinal beliefs of three Protestant groups: life-long fundamentalists (n=25), fundamentalist converts (n=25), and nonfundamentalist converts (n=25). Subjects from the Southern Baptist Church (fundamentalists) and United Methodist Church (nonfundamentalists) were used. Three instruments were employed: the Wiggins Content Scale of Religious Fundamentalism from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Loevinger's Washington University Sentence Completion Test of Ego Development, and Allport's Religious Orientation Scale. The fundamentalist and nonfundamentalist groups were doctrinally different; however, the groups did not differ in levels of ego development. The two fundamentalist groups scored higher on Allport's measure of intrinsic religious orientation. Methodological suggestions were made for future research of fundamentalists.

John Wesley’s sermon ‘Of Former Times’ (1787) provides just one example of his belief in the historical importance of the eighteenth-century Great Awakening. In its conclusion he noted that ‘[n]o “former time” since the apostles left the earth has been “better than the present”’. In another sermon he argued explicitly that religious progress in the eighteenth century was greater than during the Reformation. Undecided about a more suitable comparison, he could not choose between the apostolic age and the rule of Constantine the Great. In these arguments the early Methodists understandably afforded little time to the Middle Ages, which were seen as a dark period between the light of early Christianity and the brightness of their own movement. Yet this essay will argue that, despite this general approach to the history of the medieval church, there is an early Methodist medievalism worth recovering and that it can be best understood in the context of eighteenth-century religious polemic and debate.

Despite the proliferation of online interaction through the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs), religious organizations like churches have fallen behind in their adoption. Lagging rates of ICT integration in these organizations have created a number of challenges for many Christian denominations as membership numbers have declined. The present paper seeks to identify the dialectic tensions with which religious leaders of churches in one denomination, the United Methodist Church, struggle as they attempt to integrate new ICTs into their congregations. Through interviews with pastors and youth directors (N=27), three dialectic tensions were revealed, creating difficult challenges for organizational administration as they attempt to negotiate competing needs. The organizational approaches taken to ICT adoption and integration were influenced by the resolution of each dialectic.

Abstract This study examined perceptions regarding application of smart robot companions to facilitate homebound religious ministry programming to older adults. A total of N= 7 participants consisting of ministers, pastoral volunteers, and older adult members from Methodist, Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic traditions engaged in a 60-minute focus group. One key goal was to address the question: If you could design a robot for ministry to homebound older adults what would you want it to do? All responses were recorded, transcribed and coded for thematic content. Three core themes emerged relative to spiritual privacy, prospective intervention, and inclusive monitoring. Relative to spiritual privacy, participants expressed concern regarding robotic ability to maintain the spiritual privacy of the older homebound adult, especially when engaged in faith-based behaviors such as private prayer, confession, and pastoral counseling. Second, participants suggested that a robot companion serve as a memory aide for older homebound members. In particular, participants acknowledged a need for robot intervention relative to sending alerts concerning prayer requests, reminders of upcoming church-related events, and notices concerning future homebound ministry visitations. Finally, participants indicated an interest for the robot to actively monitor community inclusion, noting that many older homebound adults are left out of weekly church-related services or events and experience seclusion, yet most “retain a desire be included and remain an integral part of their faith community.” Results will be used to present a conceptual model for a smart robotic faith assistant designed for delivery of homebound ministries to older adults.

Teaching Arabs, Writing Self traces Evelyn Shakir’s evolution from a buddingstudent of canon English literature who was desperately trying to “becomewhite” to her epiphany that stories from her own working-class immigrantneighborhood might be of equal worth. There, she found her unique niche bybecoming an author and scholar of Arab-American literature who helped gainrecognition for this literature as a genre, and who helped readers see ArabAmericans as people rather than stereotypes.Shakir divides her memoirs into three sections. In the first, she reflectson her childhood during an era that frowned upon diversity. Like many immigrantchildren, she turns up her nose at the “wrong” foods: “Bread withpockets. Hummus and tabouli. ‘Don’t put that stuff in my lunch box,’ I said”(p. 8). She even goes so far as to join a Methodist church whose quiet, orderlysimplicity seems more “American” than her family’s ritualistic but expressiveOrthodox church. Acculturated to the “Protestant disdain for Eastern churchesand, by extension, for the East itself,” only later does she develop “[a]n inklingthat there might be treasures I had turned my back on. That I might not alwayshave to be ashamed” (p. 13).In this section, we see the historical value of Shakir’s work not only as apersonal memoir, but also as an account of twentieth-century Americana. Bornin 1938, she offers a rare narrative voice of that era – that of a Lebanese-American and a woman; a handful of personal photos literally offer a rareglimpse into the society of Arab-American women. Many of her childhoodmemories center on Boston’s nearby Revere Beach, which boasted “slot machinesspitting out weight, fortune, photos of Rita Hayworth,” “Dodgems (‘nohead-on collisions’ but we did),” and “clams in a Fryolator … corn poppingfrantic in a display case … frozen custard (banana my favorite) spirallingthick-tongued into waffle cones, then dipped headfirst in jimmies” (p. 32).Her true claim to Americanhood is that her uncle ran the beach’s “glitzy” Cycloneroller coaster, which “gave me bragging rights among my friends andhelped situate me closer to the American norm that was always just beyondmy reach” (p. 29). The Cyclone was so important to the beach’s identity thatits closure in 1969 signaled the demise of the beach itself. “It’s those cars thattell the story,” she recollects. “As soon as masses of people could afford them,Revere lost its reason for being” (p. 43) ...

A theologically-pastoral examination of the socio-economic situation of the brown welfare pensioners in the Redeemed African Methodist ChurchThe South African society is characterised by socio-economic inequality between various social components which is also reflected in the older persons’ population (Beukes 2014:32). The objective of this article is a theological-pastoral investigation of how apartheid and neoliberal market economy could be structurally responsible for the socio-economic situation of brown welfare pensioners which is then interpreted in the light of God’s justice. The insight gained could then be used by the Redeemed African Methodist Church to devise an appropriate theological-pastoral strategy to assist these older persons. This article is based on empirical data that was gathered by means of focus group methodology. The findings are that these older persons are victims of external factors determining their socio-economic situation. The theoretical framework of this article is that theological-pastoral care to these older persons cannot be separated from theological-pastoral care of the public life.

AbstractThrough a Critical Race Theory perspective, we investigated how racial ideology, in particular colorblind ideology, was present in Black forgiveness narratives for racial violence. We collected United States news articles from two high profile cases of Black forgiveness (N = 122), the shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and the killing of Botham Jean. We used a thematic analysis to address an overarching research question of: In what ways are these Black forgiveness narratives reflective of racial ideologies that may pressure or misrepresent Black forgiveness? Our results suggested that colorblind ideologies were present in representations of Black forgiveness. Colorblind representations of Black forgiveness ignored and diminished the racial context of the cases, reinforced false equivalencies through Christian messaging, perpetuated Black forgiveness as a palatable path to peace, and maintained a perception of White virtue and morality despite racial violence.

Abstract Faith-based organizations, with broad reach and trust, are well-positioned to promote health. The purpose of the study was to examine 12-month implementation and its predictors in the statewide Faith, Activity, and Nutrition (FAN) dissemination and implementation (D&I) study. Churches (n = 93; 42% predominantly African American) in the [South Carolina] Conference of the United Methodist Church trained by Community Health Advisors participated in the study. Church FAN coordinators (n = 92) completed implementation surveys regarding opportunities, policies, messages, and pastor support for physical activity (PA) and healthy eating (HE) at baseline and 12 months. FAN coordinators and pastors (n = 93) completed CFIR-based measures at baseline, immediate post-training, and 12 months. Repeated measures ANOVAs tested change in PA and HE implementation composite scores; Cohen’s d indicated magnitude of change. Mixed model linear regression tested whether CFIR items predicted 12-month implementation, controlling for baseline implementation. PA (d = 1.42) and HE (d = 2.05) implementation increased significantly over time. PA and HE implementation were significantly greater in predominantly African American (versus White) congregations, and HE implementation was greater in churches with <500 members. FAN coordinators’ ratings of the inner setting (networks/communication, culture, tension for change, organizational rewards, readiness, and congregant needs) and implementation process (engaging opinion leaders and champions) domains were most predictive of implementation outcomes. Few pastor ratings related to implementation outcomes. This study identified constructs, guided by CFIR, that may be important for understanding PA and HE implementation in churches. Future studies will need to test them for replication. Greater changes in implementation outcomes among African American churches underscores the potential of promoting health equity through this setting.

Pruitt, who regularly attended the First Methodist Church, photographed religious rituals including births, christenings, baptisms, weddings, funerals, and revivals. In the buckle of the Bible Belt, he took pictures of countless church groups, Black and white. He had no reservation about taking pictures of African Americans: “All you had to do was to pay him,” Lula May Williams said in a 1994 interview. She recalled how in 1942, Pruitt photographed her church—the only time Pruitt ever took her picture. She pointed to a panorama on her living room wall. The picture shows a hundred church members in their Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes. This image depicts the installation of a new pastor, Rev. R. M. Prowell, and the officers of the auxiliary groups of Shiloh Missionary Baptist, the oldest Black church in Columbus, founded in 1861. Lula May Williams’s treasuring of the photograph testifies to the power of an image to carry forth the memory of faith and faithfulness. Pruitt took the picture he was paid to take; the subjects of the photograph paid the price he asked and then put on the wall or on a table a framed picture to reinforce their belief in something spiritual, something they considered priceless.

This short essay establishes in pictures and words the Tombigbee River town of Columbus, an agricultural center for northeast Mississippi, from the antebellum, slavery, Civil War and Reconstruction eras and into the early twentieth century when Pruitt first arrived. He established his photo studio in the time of the Great Migration of Blacks fleeing the South’s Jim Crow laws. Chapter includes seventeen images of landscape and people from post-World War One to pre-Civil Rights periods when most people in the agrarian American South lived in rural communities, not cities. Photographs of turkeys, chickens, horses, and hay wagons. One panoramic image on a gatefold spread depicts the late 1920s Main Street of Columbus, Mississippi. To the east, the spire of the First Methodist Church, to the west, the new bridge across the Tombigbee River. “We Buy Hides and Furs,” one storefront proclaims. Another one says: “Mules, Horses, Wagons and Buggies.”
