British Airways was recently granted permission for its fleet of Boeing 747-400 and 767 aircraft to operate using automatic landing systems in Category IIIB conditions; that is, decision height lower than 50 ft and a runway visual range of less than 200 m. This development might lead some people to think that the weather is no longer a significant factor in aviation operations. However, while these developments are taking place one sees reports such as ‘departure delays are still on the increase’; ‘poor weather slowed airport operations’; ‘BA flight from Singapore delayed by strong winds was five minutes from declaring an emergency’; ‘heavy rain might reduce wing lift when an airliner most needs it’. These reports confirm the realistic state of affairs that the weather, despite the introduction of modern avionics on board the aircraft, and automated instrumentation on the ground assisting aerodrome operations, is still a vital part of aircraft operations decision-making, affecting the safety and efficiency of flying.

Resumo:
Meteorology has seen unparalleled growth and change during the past 50 years. Rapid advances in theory, applications, and technology have demanded constant revision and updating of basic meteorology course material. This continued growth and expansion of basic knowledge and applications requires that older materials be replaced with new, that depth be replaced by breadth, or that fundamental pedagogical changes be made in instruction and curricular content. These choices are symptomatic of meteorology's current and future educational dilemma: How do we adequately prepare future meteorologists for their careers as the wealth of meteorological information, theory, and applications change? Answering this question requires a brief consideration of the history and effectiveness of undergraduate meteorological education. Perhaps more importantly, it points to the need for a consensus within the field as to what constitutes appropriate undergraduate meteorological preparation. Only then may possible solutions be outlined and their merits, cost-effectiveness, and efficacy reviewed. Based on this assessment, a plan of action can be developed to ensure the field's growth and its ability to produce viable meteorologists. Seven options are outlined in this paper as possible solutions to the dilemma. Of these, we believe that a revision of the pedagogy of meteorology with regard to curriculum requirements, course content, certification, and methods of instruction may be the most appropriate.

One of the ironies of teaching mathematics is that real-life problems, although interesting, are often too difficult to consider in a secondary school classroom. Consequently the problems that are used in texts are often somewhat contrived. While working at the local weather office, I came upon several applications of trigonometry that are both interesting and instructive for high school students. The problems require that some background knowledge be presented to the students, but often they will have at least heard about the ideas from the nightly weather forecasts on television. These ideas make an interesting discussion for both teacher and student.

Resumo:
The need to be in touch with ground control units is important due to the unexpected and quickly evolving complex structures of meteorological data in the aviation industry, which must be adhered to at all times during the flight. One of the key elements influencing how effectively airlines fly is the impact of meteorology on aircraft. Risks associated with meteorology must be continuously assessed and carefully managed by the flight crew in order to ensure the safety of flights. The goal of crew resource management, on the other hand, is to ensure safe flight operations in the field of international aviation. Pilots have been put through rigorous training to see if different crew resource management tools are adequate to improve flight efficiency in adverse weather conditions caused by meteorology. The goal of this study is to examine the favourable and unfavourable effects of meteorological events on crew resource management in recent aviation operations. The face-to-face interview technique, one of the qualitative research methods, was used and data were collected in the light of the information obtained from the pilot pool of 50 people. In the study, the opinions of the teams on what kind of flight management and data analysis application they carried out were taken, accompanied by questions directed through meteorology, flight safety and crew resource management factors. The collected data were analysed by content analysis method. As a result of the analysis, it was concluded that theoretical knowledge on stress management and a good analysis of meteorology are of vital importance. It has been evaluated that accidents and incidents that occur indirectly in aviation in meteorology can be completely prevented, and by drawing attention to the importance of the team resource management factor, it has been concluded that they can be prevented by working together with advanced meteorology systems and an up-to-date training.
