Introduction. The article considers the processes of resettlement of the Mennonites in the Black Sea region in the 19th century and solving the land issue which is closely connected with it. Methods and materials. The archival documents of funds of the State archive of the Republic of Crimea and published materials from collections, first of all the acts devoted to the issue of foreign colonization in the Russian Empire formed the source base of the research. The general historical principles of historicism and objectivity and also specific methods are the methodological basis of the research: historical and comparative, historical and genetic, historical and system methods. Analysis. The analysis of the colonization legislation concerning foreign immigrants shows high interest of the government in involving the Mennonites to settling of Novorossiysk region. The land issue was resolved differently: till the 1840s all lands were given to the Mennonites to “eternal” possession of the whole colony, without the right of alienation to third parties; also because of the shortage of free state lands the colonists were granted the permission to buy lands; the government also bought comfortable lands to treasury for its distribution among the Mennonites. Results. The authors underline the following features of land management in Mennonite settlements: land plots were distributed by household and family, without splitting (sixty five tithes per family); there was a minority right, which led to an increase in the number of landless. In the second half of the 19th century resettlement of the Mennonites went due to the land purchase or long-term rent with the subsequent repayment, land plots began to be split.

Introduction. The relevance of the research topic is due to the weak elaboration in the works of modern historians of the problem of participation in civil service in the Russian Empire at the beginning of the twentieth century of representatives of non-Orthodox Christian denominations (Mennonites and Molokans). Methods and materials. The article presents correspondence of the Main Directorate of Posts and Telegraphs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Empire on the issue of admission to the postal and telegraph service of Molokans and Mennonites in 1909–1914. This set of documents reflects the practical implementation of the principle of freedom of conscience in the Russian Empire during the period of gradual abandonment of civil rights and freedoms declared in the course of the Revolution of 1905. The documents also record the transformations that took place in the worldview of Mennonites and Molokans. The research uses historical-comparative, problem-chronological methods, methods of archeography and historical source studies. Analysis. The purpose of the article was to identify the attitude of state bodies to the admission to the civil service (on the example of the postal and telegraph department) of candidates from among sectarians (Mennonites and Molokans) after the revolution of 1905–1907. An active liberal reform of the Russian religious legislation there was in 1905–1912. However, the religious factor continued playing a role in entering the civil service. The documents reflect the negative attitude towards the admission of sectarians (primarily Molokans) to the civil service of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Department for Foreign Confessions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. They focused on the anti-state tenets of the Molokan creed. The management of the Main Directorate of Posts and Telegraphs in 1914 decided to ban Molokans from taking positions in the postal and telegraph department. It is noted that in the Mennonite ethnoconfession, a revision of the attitude to family and marriage, to the role of women, to civil service begins. Molokans at the beginning of the twentieth century also rejected some tenets of faith, in particular, pacifism and denial of the state oath. Authors’ contribution. O.Yu. Redkina identified and prepared archival documents for publication, conducted a historical source and archeographic description. T.P. Nazarova considered the transformation in the worldview of Mennonites and Molokans at the beginning of the twentieth century, their attitude to civil service, to the position of women in the family and society.

Purpose Literature on immigrant and ethnic minority entrepreneurship almost exclusively focusses on the west, while neglecting other world regions. This neglect is problematic not only because international migration is on the rise outside the west, but also because it reveals an implicit ethnocentrism and creates particular presumptions about the nature of ethnic minority entrepreneurship that may not be as universally valid as is often presumed. The purpose of this paper is to examine ethnic minority entrepreneurship in non-western contexts to critically assess two of these presumptions, namely that it occurs in the economic margins and within clear ethnic community boundaries. Design/methodology/approach The authors draw on academic literature (including the authors’ own) to develop two case descriptions of ethnic minority entrepreneurship outside the west: the Mennonites in Belize and the Chinese in Cambodia. For each case, the authors describe the historic entrepreneurial trajectory, i.e. the historical emergence of entrepreneurship in light of relevant community and society contexts. Findings The two cases reveal that, in contrast to characterisations of ethnic minority entrepreneurship in the west, the Mennonites in Belize and the Chinese in Cambodia have come to comprise the economic upper class, and their business activities are not confined to ethnic community boundaries. Originality/value The paper is the first to elaborate the importance of studying ethnic minority entrepreneurship outside the west, both as an aim in itself and as a catalyst to work towards a more neutral framework.

Abstract Background Pennsylvania is home to Amish and Mennonite communities with an estimated combined population of over 90,000 people. Under-immunization is common with vaccine preventable diseases, including tetanus, periodically presenting among children from these communities. Nearly 20% of nationally reported pediatric tetanus cases in the past 10 years were treated at our institution, the tertiary care center which serves these unique populations. We characterize demographics and costs of treating this rare, but largely preventable infection. Methods Chart review based on ICD-9 codes for tetanus infection in patients aged 0–17 years treated for clinically diagnosed tetanus infection between January 2006 and December 2015. Cost data were extracted from Horizon Business Insight software and analyzed in Microsoft Excel. Cases were mapped using UDS Mapper. Results Four cases of pediatric tetanus infection were identified with 100% occurring in unimmunized patients and 3 of 4 (75%) in Amish individuals. Treatment costs amounted to $121,170 with estimated payment of $80,664 resulting in a net loss to the hospital of $40,506 over the course of 10 years. Each case treated resulted in a median loss of $4,402 to the hospital. Conclusion The costs of treating this vaccine preventable disease for both hospitals and under-immunized Amish and Mennonite communities, who tend to pay out-of-pocket, should be emphasized in targeted outreach and education programs at the population level. Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is considered to be a pediatric emergency, with respiratory distress being the most common presenting symptom. The authors present two cases of SCID in children <4 months of age with respiratory distress at a tertiary care centre due to a recently described homozygous CD3 delta mutation found only in the Mexican Mennonite population. Failure to respond to broad-spectrum antibiotics prompted investigation for possible SCID. Bronchial alveolar lavage fluid from both patients grewPneumocystis jiroveci, and flow cytometry revealed absent T cells. TheCD3 deltagene is believed to be important in T cell differentiation and maturation. The present article reminds pediatricians and pediatric respirologists that the key to diagnosing SCID is to have a high index of suspicion if there is poor response to conventional therapies.

Introduction. The authors proceed from the understanding that medical culture is a complex of factors contributing to the preservation of health, and these positions analyze the culture of the German Protestant communities (Lutherans, Hernguthers, Mennonites) inhabiting the Povolzhye (Volga region) in the second half of 18th – early 20th centuries. The study of cultural contexts of health, including religious ethical norms, is key to analyzing health and well-being of a population. Methods and materials. Materials for the study were statutes of Protestant communities, data of zemstvo medical statistics, publications in central and local periodicals, as well as eyewitness accounts of visitors of German colonies. The comparison of ethical standards contained in the statutes and recorded by witnesses with data on morbidity and mortality allow us to estimate the role of religious and ethical views in the medical culture of Volga Protestants. Analysis and results. The authors have found that the conditions for maintaining health in German colonies, including the availability of high-quality medical care, were directly related to the labour ethics of Protestantism and the high level of dwellers welfare. Labour ethics determined importance to keep fit, influenced nutritional culture and the perception of medical care. The total literacy of colonists contributed to the spread of advanced medical practices among them (for example, vaccination). Protestant virtues of diligence and order became the basis for the development of hygienic skills – an important factor in the prevention of infectious diseases. The ideals of marital fidelity and family values promoted health maintenance. Self-government characteristic of Protestant communities made it possible to quickly respond to the challenges posed by threats to health.

This book is a delightful read. The somewhat unoriginal title (compilationsof conversion accounts under the title Islam Our Choice have been aroundfor several decades, including stories that date back to the mid-twentiethcentury) belies the original and unique stories told within. However, thesewords might be rather startling for many non-Muslims, and thus piquetheir curiosity enough to pick up the book and inquire further.Islam Our Choice, aimed primarily at non-Muslim Americans, tellsthe stories of fellow Americans who have chosen to follow a different pathbut who are still Americans. The authors express the hope that “each non-Muslim American reader will probably be able to relate to and identifywith the pre-Muslim background of at least one of the authors” (p. 2). Theinclusion of family photos and illustrations adds to the book’s visualappeal and shows the contributors as ordinary Americans who are at homewith their new identity as Muslims.Although the contributors cover a wide range of geographical locations, levels of education, and career paths, their ethnic and religious backgroundscover a narrower range. Most of the respondents were former Christians ofvarying denominations, and most are white; one African-American womanalso contributed her story. It is now well known that there are Jewish,Latinos/Latinas, and Native American converts, and, hopefully, their storieswill be told in the near future in order to present a fuller picture of how Islamis reaching all sections of American society. The book opens with a brief overview of Islamic faith and practice, Islamin America, and a comparison between the position of women in modernAmerica and in Islam. This research is a quantitative content analysis and qualitative rhetorical analysis of U.S. Mennonite women’s rhetoric in two prominent Mennonite publications, The Gospel Herald and The Mennonite, between 1963 and 1977. During this time period 150,000 Mennonites considered themselves members of the church. The context of each paper was identified through content analysis Women who chose to submit articles to the church press faced enormous obstacles when promoting gender equality. Gender equality was a direct challenge to Mennonite’s traditional view of "divine order," which is a hierarchy of God, man, then woman. Due to the these obstacles Mennonite female authors who were supportive of gender equality took on a facilitating tone and a double identity persona comprised of both Mennonite and feminist. Mennonite women who supported a more traditional view of gender roles had an instructional tone and a "selfhate" persona. Invitational rhetorical theory helps to explain the rhetorical choices made my female rhetors during this time period.

Resumo:
This study asks whether the use of non-English words in the novels of Canadian Mennonites perpetuates a cultural binary, and concludes that it does not. The use of the non-English word, rather than enforcing a binary between "us and them", ultimately reveals that cultural boundaries are permeable and unstable. Recent reader-response theory, which sees the reader as always influenced by a context, is central to this inquiry. Analysis of readers' responses in the form of questionnaires constitutes part of the support for my assertions, while an examination of typography, orthography, interlingua, and theme in three novels by Canadian Mennonites provides the balance. Chapter one lays the theoretical framework for the investigation. It discusses: reader-response theory and the impossibility of accessing a stable textual meaning coincidental with the author's intention, the challenge of the non-English word to the concept of universality, and the distinction between proper “English" and non-institutional "english". Chapter two examines some readers' responses to non-English words and finds that “inside" readers have interpretations in common with "outside” readers, and that variations exist between the interpretations of “inside" readers. A binary model is too simplistic to encompass the range of contexts from which readers read. Chapter three discusses typography, orthography, and interlanguage in relation to (Low) German, and suggests the importance of these features to a discussion of the texts. Chapters four through six examine Rudy Wiebe's The Blue Mountains of China (1970), Anne Konrad's The Blue Jar (1985), and Armin Wiebe's The Salvation of Yasch Siemens (1984) respectively. Each novel's thematic concern with cultural boundaries serves as a framework for interpreting its physical and linguistic features. Chapter seven concludes by examining the influence of my own fragmented identity on the development of my argument, and revisits the issue of authorial intent in our politically less-than-perfect world. A lengthy appendix serves as a pluralistic glossary to the texts, and contains the responses to my questionnaires. A brief section outlines some of the appendix's interesting patterns and trends. An index to the appendix is provided since the appendix is not arranged alphabetically.

This chapter describes a 17-year partnership between the James Madison University Art Education Center and the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. The collaboration centers on a service-learning experience for pre-service art educators to provide art instruction to the residents of the retirement community. In 2009, the author became the coordinator of this service-learning experience and instructor for its corresponding art education course. The art education students work with independent living and memory care residents of the retirement community. Being a part of a collaborative, long-term program with the retirement community has provided tremendous learning experiences for the author, her students, the residents, and the retirement community staff regarding the power of art making in an intergenerational setting. This chapter includes a literature review, examples of artwork made in the program, descriptive observations, and reflections on the author's experience working with students and residents in the retirement community.

Rural communities often face the need to reach out to immigrant groups to help sustain their populations. However, rural communities often lack the necessary support and resources required to meet the needs of immigrant communities. This chapter reports on the role of a participatory education project in meeting the needs of immigrant Old Colony Mennonite women. Building on an existing ESL program in a rural community in Southwestern Ontario, a participatory health literacy pilot project was developed employing an action research format. With the participants, the authors explored the participant identified topic of dealing with the stress of parenting, using metaphors (presentational knowing) and collaborative inquiry. Post-project, in-depth, semi-structured interviews were completed with participants and program staff. Interview data was analyzed using a constant comparison method and five themes are identified and discussed: (1) reconsidering the nature of their children; (2) the power of language to transform; (3) modeling with language; (4) changing parental behaviours; and (5) normalizing what happens at home. The authors then discuss the efficacy of utilizing presentational knowing and collaborative inquiry as a pedagogical strategy for meeting the learning needs of rural immigrants.

Abstract Jakob Spener did not consider himself a reformer in the tradition of Luther and Calvin. He did not intend to establish a sect in competition with other Protestant churches, and he never formally severed his ties with the Lutheran church in Germany. But his collegia piatatus gathered in homes during the week, enjoying an atmosphere of warmth and community that was far more conducive to an emphasis upon Christian experience in daily life than was the foreboding air of the European cathedrals. These meetings, however, were viewed with suspicion by both civil and ecclesiastical author ities, who were aware of the dissent of the Moravians, Mennonites, and other Anabaptist groups elsewhere on the continent. Already troubled by the continuing Catholic presence, Germany did not need additional conflicts at home, and so, while no actual persecution of the kind associated with the Inquisition was instituted, pressure was brought to bear upon the Pietists to keep them from straying too far from the orthodox fold. One of the measures taken was the closing of several universities to persons espousing Pietist con victions. In response, the Pietists opened their own university at Halle in 1694, and out of this institution grew the first Protestant missionary agency, the Danish-Halle Mission. One of the first graduates of Halle University, Ludwig von Zinzendorf (1700-1760), introduced pietistic concepts to a group of Anabaptist refugees he had permitted to build a town on his property. From this group he recruited the first members of what became the Moravian Missionary Society.
