The increasing and diversified internal mobility in the periurban and rural areas of Cameroon leads to a proliferation of cultures and a close contact between native and migratory languages. In such a plurilingual context, the coexistence of languages, practices and varieties with varying status and symbolism can be a source of dynamisation or alteration of the autochthonous languages whose intergenerational transmission is challenged by a defy of originality. This article examines the sociolinguistic impact of Medumba language use by non-natives, thereby addressing the following question: what is the sociolinguistic impact of Medumba language use by non-natives ? The theory of interactionism which examines the interaction between language and society in order to understand the language practices resulting from situations of languages in contact, frames this study. It argues that the permanent contact between languages and the interaction between their speakers have a considerable impact on their structures and uses. The analysis is based on previous work, verbal interactions and oral information collected through direct observation techniques, surveys and semi-structured interviews with informants. It reveals that, Medumba language use by non-native speakers leads to the emergence of a composite language, representing an hybrid variety that incorporates the differents cultural and social realities of the non natives communities. The use of those composite languages represents a communicative strategy implemented by non-natives to preserve their culture thereby ensuring communication with natives for “un meilleur vivre ensemble”.

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the temporal interpretation of propositional attitude complement clauses in four typologically unrelated languages: Washo (language isolate), Medumba (Niger-Congo), Hausa (Afro-Asiatic), and Samoan (Austronesian). Of these languages, Washo and Medumba are optional-tense languages, while Hausa and Samoan are tenseless. Just like in obligatory-tense languages, we observe variation among these languages when it comes to the availability of so-called simultaneous and backward-shifted readings of complement clauses. For our optional-tense languages, we argue that a Sequence of Tense parameter is active in these languages, just as in obligatory-tense languages. However, for completely tenseless clauses, we need something more. We argue that there is variation in the degree to which languages make recourse to res-movement, or a similar mechanism that manipulates LF structures to derive backward-shifted readings in tenseless complement clauses. We additionally appeal to cross-linguistic variation in the lexical semantics of perfective aspect to derive or block certain readings. The result is that the typological classification of a language as tensed, optionally tensed, or tenseless, does not alone determine the temporal interpretation possibilities for complement clauses. Rather, structural parameters of variation cross-cut these broad classes of languages to deliver the observed cross-linguistic picture.

This paper examines language practices in two services offered in the main Catholic Church in the town of Sangmelima in the South region of Cameroon. The research is motivated by the need to find out what languages are used in this church and what the terms “French service” and “Bulu service” imply in the multilingual city of Sangmelima. The informants were the priests, catechists, choir leaders, and some parishioners of this church. Three main instruments were used to collect data in these two church services, i.e., interview, questionnaire and participant observation. The frame adopted for the analysis was Kouega’s structural-functional approach (2008). The findings revealed that the services in this church include 28 parts. In the French service, the languages used to realise these parts were found to be French, Bulu (Sangmelima), Ewondo (Yaounde), Fang (south of Cameroon and north of Equatorial Guinea), Fe’efe’e (Bafang), Ghomala’ (Bafoussam), and Medumba (Bangangte). In the Bulu service, on the other hand, the languages used were: Bulu (Sangmelima), Ewondo (Yaounde), and French. These languages were chosen for a variety of reasons. First, a language like Bulu was chosen because it is understood by the parishioners as it is the main language of the locality. Second, French is the official language of the territory; third, some languages like Fe’efe’e, Ghomala, and Medumba were chosen on the basis of the involvement of the speakers of these ethnic languages in the activities of the church. Fourth, the availability of printed religious materials in a language was an important factor.

AbstractThis study investigates how discourse particles and intonation contribute to the modification of speech act. In particular, it focuses on the interplay between the speaker’s and the addressee’s commitment toward the proposition in assertions, biased questions, and requests for confirmation. A syntactic analysis is proposed, in which speaker commitment and call on addressee are represented as two functional projections of the speech act structure. Data from nontonal (Canadian English) and tonal languages (Cantonese and Medumba) are analyzed for cross-linguistic comparison. In Canadian English, the particle “eh” and rising intonation are associated with speaker commitment and call on addressee, respectively. In Cantonese, a single particle associates with these. In Medumba, the two positions are occupied by two distinct particles. This neo-performative approach toward speech act structure differs from Ross’s 1970 original insight by positing a high functional layer called grounding, rather than a higher matrix clause of the familiar type.

Recently, an infinite hierarchy of languages accepted by stateless deterministic pushdown automata has been established based on the number of pushdown symbols. However, the witness language for the nth level of the hierarchy is over an input alphabet with 2(n − 1) elements. In this paper, we improve this result by showing that a binary alphabet is sufficient to establish this hierarchy. As a consequence of our construction, we solve the open problem formulated by Meduna et al. Then we extend these results to m-state realtime deterministic pushdown automata, for all m ≥ 1. The existence of such a hierarchy for m-state deterministic pushdown automata is left open.

Literature relies heavily on mythology. Myths are stories of deities, monsters or immortals which are transformed from one generation to the other. In addition to documenting the religious and cultural experiences of a specific community, myths also outline the consequent literary, artistic and dramatic customs. Some Greek myths have survived for thousands of years because they accurately depict historical events, cultural values, and trends. Among the most famous classical myths are the myths of Medusa and Medea. As for the myth of Medusa, the earliest known record was found in Theogony (700BC) by Hesiod (8 th-7th century BC). A later version of the Medusa myth was made by the Roman poet Ovid (43BC –17/18AD), in his “Metamorphoses” (3-8 AD). Then again, Medea is a tragedy produced in 431 BC by the Greek playwright Euripides(480–406BC) based on the myth of Jason and Medea. Both Medusa and Medea are among the most fascinating and complex female protagonists in Greek mythology which have captivated many writers and playwrights for ages. In the twentieth century, there were many adaptations of both mythological figures; among these adaptations were those made by contemporary American and Irish women playwrights like Carol Lashof (1956-) and Marinna Carr (1964-). This paper examines the myths of Medusa and Medea and analyses the ways these myths are borrowed, refashioned and exploited in Lashof’s Medusa’s Tale (1991) and Carr’s By the Bog of Cats (1998). Both playwrights explore hidden dimensions of the traditional myths, combining elements from the old and modern worlds.

Decentralized from decision-making processes, women have been placed at the periphery. Their silencing has been fundamental and intentional on the part of patriarchal institutions, for the sake of keeping them behind the discursive scene. To this effect, this paper examines the rebirth of women from prior states whereby they used to be denied the right to sprout the wings towards language within a ‘logocentric’ society. A deep dive into Helen Cixous’s “The Laugh of the Medusa”[i] provides grassroots for allowing a woman to transform silence into articulation. The poetry of Anne Sexton is a case study to witness the drastic change from a crippling fear of speaking into an audacity of a number of speakers in “Lullaby”, “Music Swims Back to Me” and “The Exorcists” to acquire language with which every female orator will be equipped to conquer the masculinist world without anxiety. Despite the enormous changes in feminism, philosophy and literary theory since 1975, the year in which Hélène Cixous first wrote the small manifesto by which she remains best known, ‘The Laugh of the Medusa’ continues to find generations of new readers who, upon discovering it, often declare their passionate love for it. This essay explores the relation between the enduring love that this text continues to inspire and the deconstruction of love that is inscribed within it. Irreverently and playfully drawing upon psychoanalytic descriptions of laughter as a transgressive release of bound libidinal energies, Cixous's text gives birth to a language of love that inhabits and resists the laws of language from within.

SummaryThe poet Virgil in his Aeneid employs Gorgon imagery and its attendant connection to the goddess Minerva as part of his explication of one of the key themes of his Augustan epic, namely the progress from a Trojan past to a Roman future. Close analysis of the references to the Perseus myth and related Gorgon legends in the Aeneid reveals a carefully constructed web of intratextual allusions that serve in part to underscore the end of the Trojan order and the advent of the Roman.

Background: A clinical case of isolated unilateral hypoglossal nerve (HN) neuropathy, which spontaneously occurred from vertebral artery dolichoectasia and was cured by a new method of microvascular decompression by transposition of the vertebral artery using the Teflon cuff. Case Description: A young patient with an anamnesis of the disease for more than 4 years and complaints of a deviation of the tongue to the right and dysarthria was examined. MRI of the brain revealed compression of the medulla oblongata by an elongated, dilated, and deformed right vertebral artery. Compression of the medulla oblongata and HN was confirmed during surgery. A transposition of the vertebral artery was performed using a Teflon cuff in the ventral direction to the clivus. Three months after surgery, positive dynamics was noted in the form of regression of dysarthria and improvement of mobility and trophic language. Conclusion: Thus, isolated HN neuropathy as a result of compression by an elongated, dilated, and deformed vertebral artery is a rare neurological disease that can be successfully treated by transposition using a Teflon cuff.

Ruskin's complex attitude toward women has long been important to feminist and Victorian studies; over a quarter-century ago Kate Millett published Sexual Politics and its famous attack on Ruskin's essay "Of Queens' Gardens." She charged Ruskin with promoting a sugar-coated but perfidious system of separate spheres for men and women. Yet shortly after Ruskin produced that idealized vision of housewife-queens in 1865, he created a new ideal queen in his mythological study The Queen of the Air (1869), this time elaborated from Athena. Through his mythopoesis, Ruskin disrupts both conventional gender categories and his own implication in them. Ruskin presents a series of binary oppositions that he immediately conflates: Athena and Medusa, air and earth, bird and snake, formation and destruction, science and myth, male and female. Ruskin documents the instability of his oppositions through a bizarre "natural language" where real-life creatures such as birds and snakes serve as eternal hieroglyphs, signifying universally recognizable abstractions. That seemingly fixed signs in Athena's hieroglyphic code inevitably change is clear from Ruskin's acknowledgment of Darwin's evolutionary theory. But evolution slips into a wild image of degenerative metamorphosis, where all the divisions that Ruskin has so laboriously noted dissolve. Since Ruskin identifies Athena with each seemingly opposed animal signifier in his language of living hieroglyphs, he subverts all linguistic difference and ultimately feminizes signification itself. Through myth Ruskin creates a mutable language, one where genders as well as signs become mobile rather than fixed.

In this article, humour is viewed as a strategic resource for informing in media discourse. It is analyzed through the case of “Evening Meduza”, a Russian-language nightly newsletter, received via email or Telegram messenger. A media linguistics analysis of polycode hypermedia text is used to identify communicative linguistic means, contributing to a comic reinterpretation of news on the paratextual, intratextual and visual-illustrative level. News messages in the newsletter are created in the format of compressed “packagings” (a term borrowed from Chafe) with embedded links, following which an addressee goes to the page with source text or concomitant informational resources. Humour is analyzed in packagings as well as in whole text and paratext blocks. Humorous means are revealed in three vectors of analysis: empathy in packaging texts, paratextual focus interaction, and news visualization. The change of narrative perspectives in text packages allows the authors to shift the focus of contrast within a newspiece and create humorous content while showing empathy to readers with different presuppositional expectations. The author’s signature always includes a prepositive ironic addition (attribution) that highlights one of the issue’s news elements and forces the audience to reread the newsletter in order to understand the semantic relation. Subheadings create a comic contrast, focusing on individual parts of the reference content while preparing the reader to perceive the news of the day interconnectedly. A mandatory humorous component in the block “And – picture” was found to show the news event in a visual semiotic code using a demotivator style that expresses a pun.

In her essay, ‘The Laugh of the Medusa’, Hélène Cixous talks about bisexuality and writing. Feminist writing may be said to be truly bisexual not in the sense which does away with sexual difference thereby producing neutrality, but in the sense that male and female are both omnipresent, exchanging, intermingling, enriching each other. Freed from the constraints of conventional binary opposition, male and female are able to unite, divide, multiply in an almost endless expansion of possibilities. The celebration of difference which does not divide, which is at the heart of sexual pleasure, transfusing and transforming the whole living being, will be found in women's writing, since women's songs spring from a body which denies castration. I use the future tense, since in the same essay Cixous declares that these songs use the future tense, since these songs have not yet been written, that women must liberate themselves from the dominance of the phallus, of men's language, in order to give voice to thensensuality, their sexuality, in all its complexity; to speak in the language which existed before patriarchal dominance, the fore-language which has a multiplicity of tongues. To sing a woman's song, in the language of the body, which rejects the law of the castrating father, telling of a total sexual pleasure knowing no guilt, no boundaries, is a courageous act in a world which has invented the direst forms of punishment for such transgression.

Murasaki Shikibu is one of the most famous court lady writers, or Feminine Hand, in Heian Japan. Her work The Tale of Genji, usually interpreted as revealing womens sufferings, needs an alternative explanation with a new eye. That is, a feminist voice must exist at that time, as well as unconscious feminist awareness. They have already begun to explore love, desire, and pleasure for themselves. They were even eager to express themselves in their language system, and, most importantly, they were successful in doing it. Helen Cixouss ricture Fminine theory from The Laugh of Medusa provides a new lens to look through Murasakis era and the Genji. Indeed, Murasaki can be regarded as a medieval feminist who voiced her thoughts on gender inequality in a new language system. The characters she created are individualized rather than generalized. Murasaki, a representative of many other female writers, heralded an era of female writing and entered the canon of world literature: use her body to write and never stop exploring womens own galaxy.

Jane Campion’s work regularly revolves around women’s often complex relationship with socio-cultural discourses and their articulation in language, whether in familial and institutional structures or in cultural and creative practice. In this sense, Campion’s filmmaking continues a feminist tradition of exploration regarding female subjectivity, identity and desire as it is represented in language (cinematic or otherwise). In the Cut (2003), adapted from Susanna Moore’s novel of the same name, again places language and the (dis)articulation of the female voice at its heart: the renewal of which is positioned within the film as crucial to women’s survival. In taking its cue from Hélène Cixous’s ‘The Laugh of the Medusa’ (1976) and later writings such as ‘Castration or Decapitation?' (1981) and ‘Coming to Writing' (1991), this article frames its discussion of Campion’s interrogation of ‘Woman’s’ attempts at the articulation of the self as an exemplar (in both theme and form) of Cixousian strategies. The article will argue that techniques such as a cinematic écriture feminine, and the appropriation and adaptation of the language of Hollywood genre film, form part of Campion’s feminist inquiry into the discourses and legacies of a phallogocentric patriarchal culture which traditionally delimit Woman as a ‘speaking’ subject. In this way, In the Cut exposes the tensions between what Cixous calls the ‘Absolute Woman’ of culture (the aphonic hysteric) and attempts towards agency, thus challenging phallogocentric representations of women. In using these strategies, Campion’s adaptation creates a polyphonic artefact which not only revises Moore’s novel but also re-visits (in order to reclaim) female articulation; re-writing phallogocentric claims to agency and subjectivity, imagining women's ‘survival’ through language. In this sense, then, adaptation itself can be thought of as a feminist act of subversion.

The immense popularity of the images of the Gorgon Medusa (mainly the gorgoneus) on various artifacts found in the mounds of Scythia and the Bosporus is usually explained by the apotropaic significance of her image, which was due to the influence of Greek culture on the barbarians. However, the finding of the golden gorgoneus, which was the main object of worship in one of the Maeotian sanctuaries near the village of Ulyap (Adygea), cannot be interpreted in this way. The similarity between the Gorgon Medusa and the ancient Chechen and Ingush Mother goddess Tusholi, who was worshiped in the form of an ominous mask, suggests that the Maeotes saw in the gorgonea the image of one of the main hypostases of the Great Goddess, who was also worshiped by other local tribes of the Black Sea region. In addition, among the barbarians, who practiced the ritual cutting off of the human head and religiously revered it, the gorgoneus should have been associated with this cult.

ObjectiveTo report an anti-metabotropic glutamate receptor 1 (mGluR1) encephalitis case present with cerebellar ataxia and a paraneoplastic retinopathy and optic neuropathy case with anti-inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor type 1 (ITPR1) antibodies.BackgroundMedusa-head antibodies refer to a group of autoantibodies with a staining pattern resembling a Gorgon's head, caused by binding of IgG to Purkinje cell somata and dendrites in tissue-based assay. Although these antibodies often related with cerebellar ataxia, increasing cases presented or accompanied with encephalopathy or peripheral neuropathy have been reported.Design/MethodsCases report.ResultsCase 1: A 48-year-old woman presented with acute dizziness and unsteady gait developed head titubation, repeated language and calculation impairment. Her neural antibodies were negative with commercial kits. Further investigation showed serum and CSF “Medusa head” staining pattern of Purkinje cell in rat cerebellum. An in-house cell-based assay proved the existence of anti-mGluR1 antibodies. One-year follow-up revealed serum antibodies titers dramatically decreased and CSF antibodies negative after using steroids and intravenous immunoglobulin, but still left prominent cerebellum atrophy and severe cerebellar deficits. Case 2: Two years ago, a 61-year-old man presented with painless nasal defects of right eye, photopsia and progressed to 1 m/FC within 3 days. A similar episode happened 7 months ago in his left eye. Prior malignancy including renal carcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma discovered seven and four months ago, respectively. On admission, visual acuities were OD 50 cm/FC and OS 1 m/FC. There was a right RAPD. MRI showed bilateral optic nerves atrophy. Serum AQP4, MOG and paraneoplastic antibodies were all negative. ITPR1 antibodies were proved by tissue-based assay and Euroimmun cell-based assay. He didn't accept immunotherapies and was discharged.ConclusionsBesides cerebellar ataxia, anti-mGluR1 antibodies may also cause encephalopathy symptoms. Our findings indicate a possible role of autoimmunity to ITPR1 in the pathogenesis of paraneoplastic retinopathy and optic neuropathy and expand the panel of diagnostic markers for this condition.

AbstractA well-known relief pithos in the Louvre (CA 795) shows Perseus confronting a Gorgon whose human torso terminates in the body of a horse. Her equine features have proven difficult to explain, and earlier discussions of the scene have appealed to lost narratives, seventh-century artistic conventions and broad symbolic associations between Gorgons and horses. Focusing on her combination of equine and maidenly characteristics, this article interprets Medusa's unusual form with reference to a series of ancient Greek metaphors connecting maidens, horses and Gorgons. It argues that recognizing the metaphorical logic of the image allows us to understand Medusa's form as a sympathetic comment upon her death, which has parallels in the sacrifices of maidens in Greek art and literature.

Abstract This article re-evaluates the translation strategy of the Italian publisher Mondadori for Pearl S. Buck. From the first translations in the book series Medusa to the latest editions of the 2010s, the publisher’s literary assessment and marketing strategy for Buck’s oeuvre fluctuated towards and away the standing of a Nobel Prize laurate. By collecting and analysing a variety of records from the publisher’s archive at Fondazione Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori (Milan, Italy) and the Deutsches Literaturarchiv (Marbach, Germany), this contribution challenges pre-existing narratives concerning this author’s Italian publication history. By identifying four phases in Mondadori’s programme for Pearl S. Buck, it argues that a rebranding that intentionally moved her public image away from the unwieldy shadow of the Nobel ultimately prolonged Buck’s success in the Italian language throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

The article examines the typological features of the image of an artist with trauma and its correlation with the issue of identity. The subjet matter for the analysis are the novels My Name is Red by O. Pamuk and The City with Chimeras by O. Ilchenko. The article utilises historical-literary, comparative, and mythopoetic research methods and studies of traumatic writing and identity problems. The article defines the characteristic features of the image of a traumatised artist, such as the artist's stay in a traumatic situation of creative and personal crisis, fanatical worship of the idea of serving Beauty with a dominance of the aesthetic over the moral, willingness to justify death as a form of convincing opponents; the presence of a physical injury. The article also substantiates the expediency of Medusa Gorgona’s image as a mythos-archetypal counterpart of this image. The results of the comparative analysis prove that an artist with trauma is relevant primarily for the artistic understanding of the post-colonial experience as a type of trauma. Their heroes are in search of identity. It becomes their successful or unsuccessful attempt to overcome the trauma through creativity.

Purpose: To investigate the pharmacological effect of Angelica essential oil (AEO) on anxiety disorder and the mechanism of action involved, using network pharmacology and molecular docking. Method: Chemical compositions of AEO were determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The potential targets involved in the effect of AEO on anxiety were predicted by searching Bioinformatics databases. Cytoscape software was applied for networks construction. Analysis of Gene Ontology (GO) and pathway was done via R Programming Language, while molecular docking analysis was conducted by Autodock vina software. Results: Network analysis showed that there were 10 bioactive components and 34 potential targets. The potential targets were distributed in cerebellar cortex, basic ganglia, hippocampal formation, amygdala, pons and medulla and liver. AEO was involved in multiple biological processes (BP), cell components (CC) and molecular functions (MF) associated with anxiety disorder. Molecular docking revealed good binding affinity between the major bioactive components and targets. Conclusion: This study has revealed the pharmacological mechanism involved in the effect of AEO on anxiety, through network pharmacology and molecular docking. The pharmacological mechanism provides a firm theoretical basis for further studies in this area of research.

Similar to what occurred in the Iberian Peninsula with the assimilation of Napoleon Bonaparte as the multi-headed biblical monster, cultural manifestations in Río de la Plata during the first decades of the xix century adopted the use of ancient images —classical and Catholic— to bestow a delegitimizing figure upon the adversaries of this region. As a result of a merge between historiography and discourse analysis, this work seeks to scrutinize the use of classic language features in the political culture of Río de la Plata region at the beginning of the xix century through texts such as Metamorphosis, by the Roman poet Ovid, or General Estoria, by Alfonso X “the wise.” xix century publicists from Río de la Plata put into circulation the metaphor of anarchy and its factions in terms of a permanent regeneration of their heads, thus establishing a kind of political pedagogy where it was convenient to root out the opposing elements, emulating the heroic character of Perseus and Hercules in the ancient myths of Medusa and the Lernaean Hydra. An approach to this scarcely addressed subject is inserted in a corpus of works that try to observe the way in which social actors at Río de la Plata gave meaning and intelligibility to the changes that occurred in this region during the first decades of the XIX century.

Severe spinal cord injury (SCI) resulting in permanent sensory-motor and autonomic dysfunction caudal to a damaged spinal cord (SC) segment is a catastrophic event in human as well as in veterinary medicine. The situation of paraplegic/tetraplegic people or animals is further impaired by serious complications and often displays an image of permanent suffering. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has shown neuroprotective capacity in numerous experimental and several clinical studies or case reports. Hence, the method draws increasing attention of neuroscientists as well as health care workers. While systemic TH is a too complex procedure for veterinary practice, local application of TH with a reduced risk of the whole body temperature fluctuations and minimal side effects can become one of the therapeutic tools considered in the treatment of acute traumatic SCIs in bigger animals, especially when surgical decompression of spinal medulla and vertebral column reconstruction is indicated. Still, additional large prospective randomized studies are essential for the standardization of therapeutic protocols and the introduction of the method into therapeutic armamentarium in canine and feline spinal traumatology. The research strategy involved a PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE (Ovid), and ISI Web of Science search from January 2000 to July 2021 using the terms “canine and feline spinal cord injuryˮ, “hypothermiaˮ, and “targeted temperature managementˮ in the English language literature; also references from selected studies were scanned and relevant articles included.

Abstract This article offers examples from the antebellum period that bear out Judith Lee's matters of empire framework; it exposes the ways in which American humor both continues and breaks away from its English antecedents, showing in particular how Sara Willis Parton as Fanny Fern does and does not fit into aesthetic and philosophical parameters about satire and satirists that can be traced back to English periodicals. After outlining a colonial continuity through a discussion of Parton and two contemporaries, Lewis Gaylord Clark and William Makepeace Thackeray, I go on to suggest that Parton's Fanny Fern persona also functions as a symbolic origin for a genealogy of women satirists who evoke Hélène Cixous's image of a laughing Medusa, a genealogy I describe as a neocolonial hybrid because it details American women writing satire to mock and resist the domestic imperium of US patriarchy.

The facts of Gogol's appeal to the models of classical forms of myth and ritual are interesting not only by themselves but also in the aspect of their relationship with the arsenal of Christian mythology. The fundamental point here is that in light of the historical interpretation of the myth and the Revelation by F. W. J. Schelling, the mythology since its initial stage organically developed to Christianity, to the truths of Revelation (as the historical movement “flowed” into them). The symbolic complex of the story Vij, interlacing with Eros and Thanatos, allows parallels to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice since in the case of the story Vij and in the case of myth, the motive of prohibition on sight also holds. The philosopher (i.e. the poet in the archaic and romantic notion) Homa Brut comes into contact with the world of death not of his own free will, besides, the panicle Eurydice died because of him. Orpheus partakes of the Dionysian sacraments. A visit to Orpheus of hell equated him, in Christian understanding, with Christ. In Gogol's story Vij, Dionysus and Christ have implicitly come together. The motive of the story Vij for blindness is related to Oedipus's self-blindness motive. Mythological Erinnes, persecuted by Oedipus, are old women, which correlates with one of the chthonic incarnations of the plaque, thereby drawing closer to the goddesses of revenge, punishment, and remorse of conscience. The fact of the final recognition of Oedipus as “holy” is reflected in the potential Christian semantics of the image of Homa as a martyr and passion-bearer. As the winner of the witch, the deliverer of people from her misfortunes and the passion bearer Homa is a Christian ascetic. Against the background of Christian parallels, the second stay of Homa on the farm becomes as if his “second coming”, symbolically comparable to the expected second coming of Christ, who is coming all the time. The terrible glance of Vij and pannochka certainly reminds of the slaying glance of Medusa Gorgon, which forced all living things to petrify. There is pathos of fighting tyranny in ridding the farm from the witch by Homa. Although Homa defends himself first of all in the beating scene, the general social meaning of his action is obvious. The power of the pannochka (she is the daughter of a wealthy sotnik), who for some reason considers himself pious, is not only socio-political but, in the main, existential-anthropological, this domination over man as a species, over man as such. The motives of ancient Greek and in general pagan mythology are closely intertwined in Gogol's story with Christian motives, which formed the unique spiritual and aesthetic synthesis of the story Vij.

ABSTRACTA set of computer programs has been developed to draw chemical-equilibrium diagrams. This new software is the Java-language equivalent to the Medusa/Hydra software (developed some time ago in Visual basic at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden). The main program, now named “Spana” calls Java programs based on the HaltaFall algorithm. The equilibrium constants that are needed for the calculations may be retrieved from a database included in the software package (“Database” program). This new software is intended for undergraduate students as well as researchers and professionals. The “Spana” code can be easily applied to perform radionuclide speciation and solubility calculations of minerals, including solubility calculations relevant for the performance assessment of a nuclear waste repository. In order to handle ionic strength corrections in such calculations several approaches can be applied. The “Spana” code is able to perform calculations based on three models: the Davies equation; an approximation to the model by Helgeson et al. (HKF); and the Specific Ion-Interaction Theory (SIT). Default SIT-coefficients may be used, which widens the applicability of SIT significantly.A comparison is made here among the different ionic strength approaches used by “Spana” (Davies, HKF, SIT) when modelling the chemistry of radionuclides and minerals of interest under the conditions of a geological repository for nuclear waste. For this purpose, amorphous hydrous Thorium(IV) oxide (ThO2(am)), Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) and Portlandite (Ca(OH)2) solubility at high ionic strengths have been modelled and compared to experimental data from the literature. Results show a good fitting between the calculated values and the experimental data especially for the SIT approach in a wide range of ionic strengths (0-4 M).

The present study aims to investigate the psychological mechanisms beneath the change in the facial expression of some of the beheaded characters in Caravaggio’s works, starting from The Head of Medusa, from the artist’s youth, and reaching David with the Head of Goliath, a mature workpiece, searching the continuity between them through a series of self-portraits/ self-insertions of the artist in his work. The psychodynamic analysis is limited by the constitution of its practice to the study of the process of image production and the artistic imaginary, rather than to the investigation of man or the artist out of reach by means of figurative and symbolic language. This approach aims to highlight the drives of the unconscious, the structures of censorship and the technique of operating of the defensive mechanisms that ultimately could contribute to the production of such masterful images that are both seductive and confusing. The study incorporates and continues the contribution of authors such as Leo Bersani and Ulysse Dutoit who applied Laplanche’s theory of generalized seduction theory in the analysis of Caravaggio’s works, but also the mirror stage of Lacan and the masterful study of Winnicott regarding the reflection of the baby in the mimics of his mother, an unconscious unclear image that will stand forever for the perception of the self. The change of the affective resonance, expressiveness and emotional relating to violence is natural in the course of human evolution. While not even the artist Caravaggio can elude it, his work can illustrate by deflection these transformations of the dynamics of the mind, it can raise new questions and open new perspectives of understanding the artistic drive.

Tliis article is about appropriating Pierre Bourdicn for feminist theory. This means a critical assessment of a given theory formation with a view to taking it over and using it for feminist purposes. Only recently, Bourdieu has found an audience outside the social sciences in the English-speaking world. One of the reasons for this belated interdisciplinary interest is surely the fact that his resolntely sociological and historical thought (classical french sociology, structuralism and marxism), could find little resonance in a theoretical space dominated, in the humanities at least, by poststructuralism and postmodernism. Today, however, there is a renewed interest in the social and historical determinants of cultural production. The fact that Bourdieu has always devoted much space to problems pertaining to literature, language and aesthetics makes his work particularly promising terrain for literary critics. His theory allows feminists to produce highly concrete and specific analyses of the social determinants of the literary énonciation. This is not to say that such determinants are the only ones that we need to consider, nor that feminist critics should not concern themselves with the énoncé, or the actual statement itself. In this article 1 hope to show that a Bourdieuian approach enables us to reconceptualize gender as a social category in a way which undercuts the traditional essentialist/nonessentialist devide. In reading with Bourdieu Héléne Cixous's highly influential essay "The Laugh of the Medusa" can be analysed as an effort to snub Simone de Beauvoir, a deliberate challenge to the doyenne of French feminism, and, more specifically, as Cixous's bid for power - legitimacy - within the field of French feminism. Implicitly casting Beauvoir as orthodox, Cixouss defiant exclusion of the author of The Second Sex in her essay signals her need to erase a figure she perceives as the powerful and censorious origin of her own discourse.

In spite of the high economic value of the Saussurea species in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR), the potential of most of the species is yet to be investigated. Therefore, an attempt has been made to study the diversity, distribution, habitat preference, nativity, endemism, status and indigenous uses of Saussurea species in the IHR. A total of 62 species were recorded from the IHR; of these, 37 species were native to the Himalayan region, 8 were endemic and 21 were near endemic to the IHR. Twenty-seven of the 28 species that were known to have indigenous uses also had medicinal value and are used for the treatment of various diseases/ailments. Many species, e.g., S. affinis (Ganga Mula*), S. auriculata (Pachak Kut), S. bracteata (Prerak Mul), S. costus (Kuth), S. gossypiphora (Kasturi Kamal) and S. obvallata (Brahm Kamal), have multiple uses. The genus showed high habitat specificity in that 16 species were recorded to be restricted to one or two habitats only. As many as 44 species were identified as rare in the study region. Considering the high industrial demand for raw materials and the endangered status of S. costus, S. gossypiphora, S. obvallata and S. simpsoniana (Fen Kamal), these species should be prioritized for conservation (in situ and ex situ) throughout the IHR. Population assessment of the rare-endangered, native, endemic and economically important species using standard ecological methods has been suggested for the quantification of the existing stock of these species in their natural habitats. Further, phyto-chemical investigations for the identification of active ingredients are suggested. Propagation and cultivation techniques are lacking for most of the species of Saussurea except for S. costus, S. obvallata and S. medusa (Snow Lotus). Furthermore, the native communities need to be sensitized to the sustainable use and conservation value of the species in this genus. *Local names given in parentheses throughout are in the Pahari language, spoken by native communities in the Himalayan region.

The term of “incidentaloma” involves multiple disciplines of the medicine, especially on the era of modern medicine with massive progress of investigations tools that increased the epidemiological implications of this entity. “Endocrine incidentaloma” represents a term mostly used for adrenals and pituitary glands (and less used for thyroid where it is replaced by the term of “thyroid nodule”). Adult adrenal incidentaloma (AAI) is expected to be found up to 5-20% of population depending on age group, co-morbidities, radiological/imaging method (the incidence increases with age), and not in children. We aim to overview the spectrum of pediatric AI (PAI) as an umbrella term for various histological and endocrine conditions. This is a brief narrative review of literature. Inclusion criteria are: PubMed published papers, in extenso articles (English language), the year of publication between 2016 and 2021; the selection is based on clinical relevance. A number of 70 references is included. PAI may be related to various tumors of the cortex and medulla, while AAI mostly means an adrenocortical adenoma with a very good prognostic. AAI diagnostic (based not only on radiological, but also an endocrine assessment) exceptionally underlines an adrenocortical carcinoma or evolves to a malignancy while in pediatric population the eventuality of an incidental adrenocortical carcinoma is not so rare (the non-functional pattern is more frequent in children than in adults). Neural crest-derived tumors may be located at adrenal levels; while ganglioneuroma is a benign tumor which typically respects the incidental detection, neuroblastoma is mostly aggressive and the clinical presentation suggestive for a malignancy is more frequent rather than a completely asymptomatic picture. 10-14% of pheochromocytomas are incidentally detected; however, the adrenalectomy is imperative, regardless the phenotype. PAI represents a large multidisciplinary field which is still a matter of debate in certain areas. The key message is the fact that accidental detection of an adrenal mass on an apparently healthy child needs careful examination; serial follow-up is less likely the elective approach (opposite to adult population) since adrenalectomy provides adequate histological report in order to sustain the endocrine and imaging workup.

Background: The cerebellum is a very important part of central nervous system. It is involved in the maintenance of balance and posture, coordination of voluntary movements, motor learning and cognitive functions such as language. Inferior cerebellar peduncle connects the spinal cord and medulla oblongata with the cerebellum and carries unconsciousness proprioceptive information from body and limb. The mean diameter of inferior cerebellar peduncle at birth is only a fraction of the adult diameter then diameter increases up to certain age and decreases in old age. Objectives: The present study was done to observe the diameter of the inferior cerebellar peduncle in different age groups of Bangladeshi cadaver which will serve as a baseline data for clinician about the neurological disorders in our country.Materials and Methods: A cross sectional, analytical type of study was carried out in the department of anatomy, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh from April'2009 to September'2009. A total of 63 cerebellums were collected of which 40 (male 25 and female 15) were from during postmortem of unclaimed Bangladeshi cadaver aged between 5 to 60 years and 23 (male 14 and female 9) were from caesarian section of dead fetuses aged between 34 wks to 42 wks. of gestation. The collected sample was grouped into three age groups like Group A (34 to 42 weeks of gestation), Group B (5 to 30 years) and Group C (31 to 60 years). The diameters of the inferior cerebellar peduncles were measured by using slide calipers and expressed in millimeter (mm).Result: The mean (±SD) diameter of right inferior cerebellar peduncle was in Group A 5.40±1.13, B 7.72±1.18 and C 6.77±1.68 mm respectively and the mean (±SD) diameter of left inferior cerebellar peduncle was in Group A 5.20±1.09, B 7.59±1.23 and C 6.66±1.58 mm respectively. Conclusion: From the present study it is observed that the mean diameter of the inferior cerebellar peduncle increased with age upto certain level then slightly decreased in the late age. The result of the present study will enrich the information pool on diameter of the inferior cerebellar peduncle of Bangladeshi people.KYAMC Journal Vol. 8, No.-1, Jul 2017, Page 27-32

Case Study ResearchCultural Poetics identifies literature as a social text or discourse. My paper argues the significance of the works of Cather, Morrison and Ehrenreich as models for cultural change. Literature is a social text or discourse which dynamically interweaves multiple strands. My creative approach to teaching blends metacognition and hermeneutics with a concentration on social justice as a paradigm for the English classroom which resounds with tension and resolution dependent upon the silent resilience of the individual. Through student-directed pedagogical model, writing class fuses into a learning community for reflection, discovery, and peer editing for student motivation and success. We actively engage students to explore archetypical universes created by current imaginative writers. Mythological Literary Criticism and Film Theory as a lens into archetypes. We also engage in analysis of personal essays on identity. Metacognition and a student-directed pedagogical model. Through the paradigm of active learning, we engage in reading key articles by scholars in the field in blogs, wikis, web sites, books, pamphlets, newsletters, or journals or other material demonstrating techniques of close reading in order to explicate a text with terms of the literary scholar that apply to writing across the curriculum and differentiating among major literary genres to converse, to analyze, and to use cultural heritage. Students possess qualities of memory based upon human every day experiences similar to those experiences within literary works they read. I play pod casts of sample student essays that show how students recall events or conditions based upon the relationship of reading to memory. One of my students recalls her own beliefs in mercy killing and relates her heritage based upon family and cultural beliefs in the right to life. Students use life story writing next to recount experiences that may help them find thesis. We write for a global multiethnic and ageless audience. Stories can indeed reach all readers. To write, we engage memories of readings, life experiences and imagination. Accordingly, these three patterns compose voice on the written page. But, writing is an essential skill needed for human dignity. My claim emphasizes the importance of reading, writing, and analysis of short stories by Toni Morrison and Willa Cather as well as poetry by Rita Dove as a doorway to practicing social justice in your community and to developing a consciousness and awareness of social justice praxis. I perform case study research on a single subject, myself. Dove was born in 1952. She is an American poet and fiction writer. My model in writing is Hélène Cixous. A visionary, Hélène Cixous (“The Laugh of the Medusa”) realized that we are writing to find ourselves. Applicable to the study of Willa Cather, Toni Morrison, and Barbara Ehrenreich, the writing of oneself represents our search for words to describe situations. Based on the study of Aristotle’s Poetics (free online text), a good companion work to interpret “art as imitation”, I argue that Cather, Morrison, and Ehrenreich use language in specific modes of discourse, such as fiction, essay, and dialogue, for the purpose of reaching readers. In doing so, they absolutely attempt to motivate and to teach us. In fact, through the art of poetics as a practice, they capture emotions or actions. Then they apply language as metaphors of our actions, ethics, and attitudes. The works portray the human condition. Cather, Morrison, and Ehrenreich create the poetics of language essential to the significance of the messages. In this context, all three writers portray actions and indicators that are significant to us as readersFirst, the significance of the message of Willa Cather is suffering, in her book, My Mortal Enemy. My readings signify the message of Cather as a writer who designs poetics as the cause of the work. Recent research in the area of stylometrics…explores the ways in which the voice of Cather, in her correspondence, differs from the voice she used in her public writing. Conclusions point to similarities between Cather’s novel, My Mortal Enemy, a work noted for both its economy of style and autobiographical features, and her recently published letters (Dimmit et al.). The researchers acknowledge that Cather was very private. She did not want her letters shared with the public. Only recently have her letters finally been published. Arguably, in the model of Hélène Cixous, we suggest that the writing of the work certainly brings a new voice that carries the message of the feminine myth.

This a r t i d e deals with Hélene Cixous's relation to t h e theatre. Her first play, La Pupille (1972), isn't p e r f o r m e d so far. Her breakthrough as a playwright was Portrait de Dora (1976), where Freud's case study is called in question by Cixous's text and Simone Benmussa's production. In a feminist theatrical manifesto Cixous declares theatre for h e r to be "a political gesture, with a view to changing", i.e. "the position of victim" of women in western theatre. (I.e Monde, April 28, 1977). Her opera Le nom d'Oedipe (1978), however, has been criticized for the static role of Iocaste (Kolk, 1990). Cixous describes her development as a writer as a way f r o m "the staging of the unconscious to the staging of History", and indeed her great historical plays, Sihanouk (1985) and LTndiade ( 1987), produced by Ariane Mnouchkine & T h é å t r e du Soleil, have proved her ability for the theatre. But Cixous has not remained exclusively a playwright for t h e "Stage of History", as the play On ne part pas, on ne revient pas (1991) shows. In this a r t i d e it is a r g u e d that Cixous' early interest in body & text, as it came about in "The Laugh of t h e Medusa" and La jeune née ( b o t h in 1975) as well as in her "fictions" in the 1970's happily goes together with her work for the theatre, the medium which works through the living body. A distinguishing quality of Cixous's "fictions" (after 1975 she no longer calls t h em "novels") is h e r advanced linguistic play o n the signifier, which highlights the patriarchal power over language, tlius she is challenging the predominant order. For example, she writes "måle élevée" (instead of "mal élevée"), signifymg an "ill-bred girl", thus summing up the whole debate on gender as a social construction within 'Taccent circonflexe"! In working with the theatre Cixous finds o t h e r possibilities to reveal power, lies a n d stereotypes, especially in working on contradictions p r o d u c e d by a confusing inter- play body / voice / image. In Portrait de Dora even a filmed sequence is projected to counter-act t h e f r e u d i a n interpretation of Dora produced on stage. In her plays as well as in h e r "fictions" Cixous thus urges us to take an active role, as spectators and readers, in the construction of "truth".

Introduction: Injuries of upper cervical spine many times associated with false localizing signs as a neurological deficit means there is a no clinic-radiological correlation. Purpose of this case report is to diagnose rare clinical presentation due to injury of pyramidal tract decussating at lower medulla. Method and Materials: A 21 years old male patient presented with traumatic quadriplegia (Frankel-A). Primary treatment was given along with immobilization of neck with collar. Routine X-ray of cervical spine was taken. X-ray was showing shear fracture of C 2 vertebra with intact dens. Crucified tong was inserted. Methyl Prednisolon injection in proper dose within 8 hours was given. (NASCIS II) CT SCAN was done to know exact fracture geometry. It was showing a fracture of C2 body in an oblique plane shearing off in one piece with the dens tilted towards right side and with subluxation of C1-C2 articular process on left side. Clinically patient improved in 24 hours in form of 4/5 power grade in all limbs except left upper limb. Left upper limb shoulder and elbow muscle power was grade 2/5 and o/5 in hand. Bladder/bowel was improved. Even though there was a weakness of left upper limb, but reflexes were preserved remarkably (Cruciate paralysis as a false localizing sign). Considering atypical unstable fracture, open indirect reduction of C-1-2 done from posteriorly and stabilization done with apofix clamps after fusion between C1-C2 posterior arches. Result: Patient had Frankel grade-A on admission. At three months follow up patient had almost full neurological recovery except finger grip power grade was 4/5. On final follow up at 12 months, neurology improved to Frankel grade-E. He had no neck pain with mild restriction of rotation. X-ray of cervical spine in flexion-extension shows stability and fusion of C1-C2 posterior elements. Conclusion: Atypical clinical presentation like cruciate paralysis as a false localizing sign should be kept in mind while dealing with fracture of upper cervical spine. As this fracture has good prognosis, proper treatment is needed. If close reduction is not achieved then open reduction and stabilization with fusion will provide early mobilization and faster neurological recovery. Keywords: Fracture; Axis; Cruciate; Paralysis.
