Texto completo da fonteToday we often try to understand what will happen to books and libraries in relation to the development of digital technologies and to the changing of urban and social function of libraries. Trying to suppose a plausible future scenario is very difficult, especially because books and libraries are both closely linked to various and different issues of contemporary society that have not yet found their own identity. In addition, the contemporary society is in a technological transition phase that risks, without doubts, to produce very important changes, not only in libraries world, but especially in our own lifestyle. For these reasons, just from the title, this thesis aims to investigate the “becoming” of the Public Library and his "destiny" that, today, is far from being written and disagrees with predictions and empirical data that result from different researches, in order to obtain new design strategies for the architectures of the twenty-first century. In this context it is necessary to examine three major issues related to the libraries: the question of the future of books and public reading, i.e. “support issue”; the question of the architecture of Public Libraries; the question of the role of Public Library as cultural institution and urban architecture. The last point permits to understand the new relationships, both at the small and the large scale, between public buildings and urban space. Those relationships are now linked to the new citizens' mobility between suburbs and city centres. The public library became the prism with which we can study the relationship between built and open spaces in the city. Changes due to these aspects certainly will affect Public Libraries and, to a certain extent, they will be able to modify the use of this institution (as we know it today) and especially its traditional mission. The research wants to give a strong and multidisciplinary answer to all these issues using the “own architectural tools”

Texto completo da fonteIn Cambodia, exceptional archaeological heritage site was revealed. Tangible and intangible, preservation proves difficult. From the nineteenth century, scientists have established a work memory on culture, history, archaeology, evolution of architecture and styles. Then the years of war have destroyed much of the social structure in the country. Actually, education faces the challenge of stabilizing a contemporary national identity around a memory, a culture and a common language. In this logic, this thesis tries to contribute to the preservation of this heritage and its transmission to the young generations. It is devoted to the vocabulary of Khmer architecture. It characterizes the specificities of various construction and religion space, through Brahman or Buddhist temples and monasteries, then the civil space, through traditional housing. It discusses the methodological difficulties on the reliability of information related to the ancient terminology. It issues the logical choice, the meaning and the precision of the notions. It addresses the backing of architectural culture to language, strongly rooted in Khmer culture, as well as the close relationship between the history of the building and that the society. Without pretending to exhaustive, many literary and familiarly words abandoned, lost and many words related to architectural design, spatial characterization, and usages on site were found or recovered. An illustrations effort, in the form of drawings and original sketches, help better understanding of the technical and operational contexts. The focus was placed on the precision and clarity of text, in French and Khmer

Texto completo da fonteToday, in a context of strong global competition, many cities have to find ways to position themselves on the global market and to distinguish themselves. In order to do so, some cities will specifically seek to enhance their local architectural heritage. This thesis aims to understand the role that a major cultural and symbolic capital plays in a city’s identity construction and its communication, heritage and tourist development. The research is centered on the role played in particular by the figure of an emblematic architect, and focuses especially on the role of Antoni Gaudí (1952-1926). Indeed, in only a few years, Barcelona has witnessed a spectacular increase in tourism figures and has become an international cultural destination. This increase in tourism, has been accompanied by the enhancement of the work of this representative architect of Catalan modernism. His work remained for a longtime closed to the public, and yet today they have become the major tourist attraction of the Catalan capital. Barcelona is now instantly identified with Gaudí who has become the symbol of the city. Through an in-depth comparative analysis of the the heritagization and touristification of Antoni Gaudí’s work in Barcelona and Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work in Glasgow, this thesis aimsto understand why in some cases, the “city-architect” constructions are well developed and the cities are immediately identified to an architect, and on the other hand, why in other cases, this link that occurs between the image of a city and the image of an architect, is much less developed and obvious

Texto completo da fonteThe city of Najaf has inherited a rich architectural heritage and is today threatened with extinction. Thanks to the large number of religious tourists, the city is undergoing a metamorphosis although these changes are often at the origin of the destruction of this heritage. This thesis focuses on the architecture of the city of Najaf in its urban and historical context. The history of the city of Najaf is in continuity with that of the city of al-Kufa (capital between 36H / 658 and 40H / 662) which is located a few kilometers from Najaf. This city built by the Muslims in the year 17H / 639 represented a strategic point but also a political hub grown fast not far from the city a proximity of al-Hira, capital of the Lakhmids, also located a few kilometers away from it. This geographical configuration is locally called "the triangle of civilization", and represents a melting pot of several architectural and urban styles. The study of the two cities (al-Rira and alKufa) is therefore essential to understand the context in which the city of Najaf was created and developed. To understand the architecture of Najaf, we will first study the architecture of these two cities. Then to better know the architecture of the city, we will demonstrate the relationship created between the Imam Ali mausoleum, (considered as the central core of the city, and who kept these provisions since 1032H / 1623) and the rest of the city by the religious and civil monuments such as masques, schools and many other monuments. Through this thesis, we will present this architecture in its current state and in its urban, social and historical context

Texto completo da fonteIn 1912, France already possesses, in North Africa, Algeria and Tunisia. Their respective military colonization was accompanied by a transfer of the political, administrative and cultural metropolitan practices as process of patrimonialisation. This last one consistes in safeguard monuments with a pronounced historic and artistic characteristic. At first, French people protected the antique buildings but little by little, they widened this protection in some representative moslem monuments of a precise period or a precise artistic style. When the treaty of Fes, of March 30th, 1912, establishes French protectorate in Morocco, it foresees, besides the administrative and economic modernization of the country, the protection of the Sultan’s spiritual power and that of Moroccan customs. In this prospect, the General Hubert Lyautey tends to rule Morocco, from his appointment at the post of Police Commissioner general Resident of the protectorate, on April 27th, 1912. He sets up a legislative and administrative device as concerns the preservation of historic monuments, which is inspired by French and Tunisian experiences but which postpones from it. Contrary to Tunisia or Algeria, the conservation of the arabian-moslem buildings prevails on that of antique monuments. Other originality of the Moroccan patrimonial program is in safeguard of urban fabrics among which the aimed first ones of which are imperial cities, Fes, Meknès, Marrakesh and Rabat Salé. These last ones synthetize by their geographical localization, their history and their ethnic, cultural, social and economic varieties the whole Morocco. They exemplify to arrest the study of patrimonial program and its means of action. From the first year of the protectorate, a dahir (decree) of November 26th, 1912 what deals with "vestiges of the past which touch the history of the Moroccan Empire as well as the artistic things which contribute to its embellishment " is established. The law of February 13th, 1914 supersedes it and establishes the modalities of preservation of historic maroccan monuments, inscriptions, objects of art and antiquity as well as places surrounding monuments, sites and natural sites. These two legislations are applied by means of the Service of antiquities, fine art and historic monuments, created on November 26th, 1912. Its role is to look for and to preserve antiquities, buildings and historic or artistic objects, to watch the executed works of restorations, to study the measures of defence, protection and renovation of the Moroccan crafts, and to preserve in full medinas and their architectures. However this objective is questioned, in particular, by the urbanistic turnovers bound to the overpopulation of the medinas that engendered drift from the land, one of the consequences of the thirties economic crises. After 1945, the protection of medinas is always a priority. The Inspection of historic monuments shapes even the former cities in cities museums to protect them from new modern constructions which menace them, although Moroccans are favorable to architectural innovations in metropolis

Texto completo da fonteThe scientific approach conducting the present piece of research combines both tradition and innovation; historical continuity on one hand – first of heritage and cultural history – initiated by the first studies on heritage policies and responsible administrations: the “Conseil supérieur des Beaux-arts” and Marie-Claude Genet-Delacroix's thesis, the early museums and the associated heritage effect studied by Dominique Poulot, then continuity of a general history of restoration and the Jean-Michel Léniaud's papers on the “service des Edifices diocésains” and cathedrals, and Françoise Bercé's book on the “Monuments historiques”; innovation on the other hand by focusing here on the question of restoration at work in a comparative study of three gothic cathedrals work sites – Our Lady of Rheims, Our Lady of Laon and Our Lady of Paris – from 1789 to 1914. Intersecting religious history, art history and political history, this research deals with monumental restoration as a political, administrative, technical and aesthetical concept and its application to every ancient monument including gothic cathedrals: but from a concept to its tangible realisation lie numerous actions and professionals (contractors and owners) as well as numerous hindrances and factors that diversify its application and implementation. This study is a comparative analysis of the conditions, programs, modes and technics employed during the 19th century on the three restoration sites
