The hospitality is the only industry which serve essential food and shelter and make the customers to feel at home. Thereby we take our food in outside restaurants.Hence personnel working in the hotel industry who serve food should be nutritionally fitand active, then only they can provide good food to the customers. A survey was conducted regarding the life style and nutritional status of the food service personnel in selected hotels from Trichirapalli district. Hundred samples of male personnel were selected in purposive random sampling method from production, service and dishwashing areas because these are the main areas were the hygienic practices should be followed strictly. An interview schedule was framed with questions regarding life style pattern,Dietary intake personal hygiene and their nutritional status is analysed by Selected Antropometric measurements, Biochemical assessment and by Dietary survey method. The results showed that Majority of the food service personnel were not following healthy lifestyle and they have lot of stress due to long working hours and they have improper meal timings and their nutritional status were not satisfactory.

Although homeless women appear to be at notable risk of unintended pregnancy, insufficient attention has been paid to understanding their access to birth control services and the characteristics of homeless women who want birth control services. To address these research gaps, the authors analyzed data from a probability sample of 974 homeless women who were interviewed in shelters and meal programs in Los Angeles County. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that among those women who wanted birth control services during the past year, using these services was associated with fewer perceived barriers to health care, having a regular source of care, consistent use of contraception, and lower odds of alcohol dependence. Availability and cost barriers to birth control services must be reduced, and effective service linkages should be developed among providers of birth control services, substance abuse treatment, and primary care.

Aims: Homelessness is associated with poor health outcomes and increased use of hospital and emergency department (ED) services. Little is known about the duration of homelessness in relation to health care service use. The aim of this study was to examine the use of hospital and ED services among the homeless in Helsinki, Finland, and for the first time, to examine the relationship between service use and duration of homelessness. Methods: Six hundred and eighty-three persons staying at least one night in a shelter between September 2009 and September 2010 were followed until the end of 2014. Using negative binominal regression analysis we calculated the use of hospital and ED services and compared the use with that of a matched control group ( N = 1361). We also analyzed service use in relation to the time spent homeless during follow-up. Results: The mean time spent homeless during the follow-up was 8.5 months, one third was temporarily homeless (less than 2% of the follow-up time), but recurrent episodes of homelessness were also common. The study group’s incidence rate ratios for medical-surgical hospital days was 6.23 (95% CI: 4.73 to 8.21), for psychiatric hospital days 43.11 (95% CI: 23.02 to 80.74) and for ED visits 10.21 (95% CI: 8.77 to 11.90), compared with controls. The number of medical-surgical hospital days and ED visits/person-year increased as homelessness was prolonged, but the pattern was opposite for psychiatric hospital days. Conclusions: Homeless persons are heavy users of hospital and ED services, and there is also increased use among those temporarily homeless.

Forests are the most important renewable resources and provide critical ecosystem services worldwide, especially the provisioning service, making a great contribution to human well-being. The Three-North Shelter Forest Program (TNSFP) is a large-scale ecological project aimed at improving ecological environments and consolidating economic construction in China through the development of artificial forests. In our study, stochastic frontier analysis was adopted to estimate forest production efficiency (FPE) by using dynamic panel data. Based on the FPE of 13 provinces located within the TNSFP region during the period 2000–2016, the effects of the natural and socioeconomic influencing factors on FPE were further explored by using the Tobit regression model. The estimated results confirmed the validity of the constructed model and revealed an increasing trend of the mean annual FPE value, which ranged from 0.3147 in 2000 to 0.5681 in 2016. The FPE was declining from the eastern region to the western region in 2000. However, this spatial distribution characteristic changed enormously in 2016; regions with low FPE were in the center of the TNSFP region, surrounded by the regions with high FPE. Moreover, the following factors positively influenced FPE: average temperature (1.4476), total annual rainfall (0.0800), per capita GDP (0.0882), the education levels of forestry employees (0.2120), the number of forest technology stations in townships (0.0149), and disease and pest control areas (0.0190). However, the impacts of the policy relating to the Natural Forest Protection Program on FPE were insignificant. These influencing factors had differential effects on FPE within the TNSFP’s three sub-regions during the period 2000–2016. These findings can contribute to more efficient forest management and strengthen resource and environment management.

Presently, there is little research on how people experiencing homelessness prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Existing emergency management literature does not provide an understanding of how disasters affect homeless shelter services. The present study seeks to fill these gaps by examining how Hurricane Sandy impacted homeless shelters and their guests in New Jersey. Presenting findings from ethnographic research in Atlantic City and Hoboken, this study identifies several areas in which homeless shelters and their guests may be able to assist in emergency response and disaster recovery such as preparing meals for victims, sorting and processing donated items, and assisting victims in filing for emergency assistance.

For 10 years, Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC) hosted a week-long on-campus emergency homeless shelter during the College’s short Winter Session. The mission of the extracurricular student-initiated, student-run project was to serve the homeless, raise awareness, dispel myths about homelessness, and reflect VWC’s mission. This research is a qualitative assessment of transferable-skill development and attitudinal change of alumni who, as students, held Shelter Manager positions. Results show that all former managers who responded to the survey think about the Shelter with some regularity, and each has continued their involvement with Shelter postcollege. Reported outcomes include changed stereotypes and broader worldviews, as well as the development of transferable skills, including interpersonal and communication skills, leadership, and teamwork. Respondents reported specific examples of ongoing impacts of Shelter in both their personal and professional lives. Research findings provide an assessment of this unique engaged learning experience specifically and contribute to the literature on postcollege outcomes of service learning more broadly.

The design of services is increasing in complexity; contemporary businesses must now consider how their services can be both provided at commercial scales while being meaningful to their users. This difficulty is captured by the meal kit service model, which must determine how to accommodate the numerous customer food values with a limited product range. In response to this challenge, this study observes how customers routinely use the meal kit service through design and service dominant logic concepts. The findings identify that customers would draw upon both their personal network and the meal kit service to achieve their personal dinner values. This study then concludes with the mechanisms of this network management, the insights of which can be used to inform the design of service functions that accommodate multiple customer values.

Hall, Jeanne Kathleen. "Student satisfaction regarding meal experience at the residential dining halls of the University of Pretoria". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/41114.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
The residential meal experience has certain unique characteristics that can be attributed to both the socio-demographic profile of the student and the type of food service provided. These characteristics result in specific expectations that should be satisfied to meet the organisational and financial goals of the service provider and the University. The main challenges include addressing cultural diversity of captive consumers and providing for the specific needs of Generation Y. Globally there is an increased effort to determine the level of satisfaction of students with their meal experiences, in order to improve the food service provided. Limited research within the unique multi-cultural South African context; the changing demographic profile of Pretoria University students since 1996, and the increase in negative media reports regarding foodservice provided on campus motivated the urgent need for an investigation. The aim of this study was to describe the satisfaction of the University of Pretoria‟s residential students regarding their meal experience in terms of the food itself, the service and the ambience, in order to provide the University‟s Department of Residence Affairs and Accommodation with recommendations to improve the meal experience offered by taking into account the demographic profile of students. To obtain the relevant data to meet the stated aim, focus group discussions in which probing questions were asked of the participants were conducted in order to develop a questionnaire. Self-administered questionnaires were issued to a stratified random sample of 878 respondents from 22 responding residences. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics and the chi-square test. - vi - Results indicated that most respondents were satisfied with the meal experience. Respondents were most satisfied with the ambience and least satisfied with the food. Respondents were most satisfied with the sensory and portion size attributes, but least satisfied with the price attributes of the food. Respondents were most satisfied with the tangible and empathy attributes of the service and most satisfied with the cleanliness and neatness attributes of the ambience. Food was ranked as most important followed by service and ambience. Freshness, nutritional value and cost (value for money) were ranked the most important attributes of food. Operating hours and cleanliness (neatness) were ranked most important for service and ambience respectively. The food dimension was identified as a priority for improvement, specifically with respect to: the price of both booked meals and commercial items, regular incorporation of new menu items, healthy/nutritious food and variety of fruit and vegetables provided. Apart from the food attributes the availability of stock at item sales and the operating hours in general, were identified as attributes of the service requiring improvement. In addition, statistically significant relationships were found between satisfaction and specific profile characteristics such as ethnic group, gender and the number of years using a specific dining hall. The results of the open-ended question confirmed the findings of the rest of the questionnaire. This study has contributed to the limited literature on student satisfaction regarding their meal experiences at residential dining halls. Valuable recommendations for improvement of the residential meal experience were provided.

Little attention has been paid in the literature to participant perception of, and attitudes toward, program and service quality in the congregate meals program. Based upon the scarcity of knowledge in this area, managers and participants in the Title III C meals program in Montgomery County, Maryland were surveyed to explore how differences in perception of program and service quality affect participant acceptance and evaluation of the program. A nutrition monitoring instrument was designed for managers at 14 meal sites to assess major components of the food service operation. A survey addressing participant perception of meal quality, meal acceptance, program administration and management, and food service personnel was designed and administered to 264 participants. The two surveys contained 17 identical or similar questions to identify any perceptual differences. Several social variables such as age, educational level, sex, marital status, living arrangement and acquisition of information about the program were found to significantly influence participant response to certain questions. Significant differences in perception between managers and participants were found in response to questions regarding availability of nutrition education lessons, need for therapeutic diets, adequacy of program transportation, temperatures at which food was served, and the degree to which substitutions were made for posted menu items. The results of this research will be used to make suggestions for program planning and evaluation, as well as to aid in continuous quality assurance.

AbstractThis chapter reflects on the sharing economy in France and what can be considered a favourable ecosystem for alternative platform models. This chapter starts by reviewing a large amount of academic literature, reports, and legislation that have been produced for the last ten years and that has certainly helped businesses, public sector institutions, and local communities to anticipate changes inspired by technology and its uses and to open up their innovation processes. The chapter then focuses on platform cooperatives in three emblematic domains (meal delivery service, carpooling, and energy) that illustrate how France has embraced the criticisms of the sharing economy and its platforms. This chapter finally discussed how some factors could be considered as characteristics of a ‘French touch’ in terms of platform cooperativism.

This chapter shows that the foundation of the working-class family was the male wage, and a recurring memory in the autobiographies was the weekly tradition of father handing his earnings over to mother. Family life involved a complex web of rights and responsibilities. The father's place in this matrix was simple: he was responsible for providing for his wife and children and his execution of this duty outside the home earned him special rights — with respect to food, service, and sex — within it. Provision lay at the heart of working-class conceptions of fatherhood, and time and again, writers used this as the benchmark with which to evaluate their fathers. The chapter thus considers how well the autobiographers' fathers provided for their families. This question is analysed with respect to an individual man's skills and capacity for earning. Furthermore, the answer to this turned upon two related factors: how regularly a father worked, and — crucially — how much of his earnings he actually shared with his family.

Abstract Far from being indiscriminately critical of the morality system, Bernard Williams offered vindicatory explanations of its crucial building blocks: the moral/nonmoral distinction, the idea of obligation, the voluntary/involuntary distinction, and the practice of blame. The rationale for these concessions, the author argues, is that understanding what these ideas do for us when they are not in the service of the system is as important to leading us out of the system as the critique of that system. The author then shows how regarding the aspiration to shelter life from luck as the system’s organizing ambition explains why the system elaborates and combines these building blocks in the way it does. Finally, he argues that the ultimate problem with this construction is its frictionless purity. It robs valuable concepts of their grip on the world and, by insisting on purity from contingency, threatens to engender nihilism about value and skepticism about agency.

They provide vital needs, commonly described as “ecological services,” for all the living things residing within that particular system, or for those on its fringes. Such services include shelter, food, maintaining soils and hydrology, and providing livelihoods for its dwellers. Water is considered an important resource for mankind and other living organisms. Therefore, maintaining the water to a high quality is crucial. Bioremediation of heavy metals and micro pollutants by microorganisms (algae, bacteria, fungi, and yeast) has been used for the last two decades. All micro-organisms and microalgae are gaining increasing attention because microalgae can easily grow and is cheap to process and able to accumulate high metal content.

As late as 1911, a leading American geographer could confidently assert that blacks in the United States would always live chiefly in "the warm, moist air of the Gulf and South Atlantic states," "where they find the heat and moisture in which they thrive"; nature decreed that few would ever settle and fewer survive in the North because they could not withstand the cold. Events, though, were contradicting this blend of racial and climatic determinism. Black migration from the South to the colder states was already substantial. It intensified dramatically during World War I. A boom in labor demand in industry, along with a near-cessation of the immigration from Europe that had once filled it, drew black and white southerners alike in unheard-of numbers to the manufacturing cities of the North. The black exodus to Kansas in 1879 and 1880 had briefly looked as if it would become just such a mass interregional movement of population. But the pioneer Exodusters had suffered from the drastic change in climate, most of all because it affected their livelihoods in farming. Their skills, which lay in cotton growing, were useless in Kansas, and their experience did little to encourage others to follow. The great northward migration of the early twentieth century was a migration not to new farmlands but to the cities for factory and service employment. The difference in climate between southern origin and northern destination did not matter much to it. White southern farmers, fearing the loss of cheap labor, warned departing blacks that they would find the winters of the North too bitter to endure. The new exodus proceeded all the same, and it discredited in the process the long-held idea that either race or habit always imposed a latitudinal pattern on human movement. The change in climate from South to North did mean discomfort or worse for many who undertook it. They suffered especially from the unaccustomed cold that few could afford stoves and fuel to ward off—though they had suffered too from inadequate shelter and clothing in the southern winter.

The central grassland region of North America (Fig. 1.1) is the largest contiguous grassland environment on earth. Prior to European settlement, it was a vast, treeless area characterized by dense head-high grasses in the wet eastern portion, and very short sparse grasses in the dry west. As settlers swept across the area, they replaced native grasslands with croplands, most intensively in the east, and less so in the west (Fig. 1.2). The most drought-prone and least productive areas have survived as native grasslands, and the shortgrass steppe occupies the warmest, driest, least productive locations. James Michener (1974) provided an apt description of the harshness of the shortgrass region in his book Centennial:… It is not a hospitable land, like that farther east in Kansas or back near the Appalachians. It is mean and gravelly and hard to work. It lacks an adequate topsoil for plowing. It is devoid of trees or easy shelter. A family could wander for weeks and never 4 nd enough wood to build a house. (p. 64)… The objective of this chapter is to introduce the shortgrass steppe (Fig. 1.3) and its record of ecological research. First we present an ecological history of the shortgrass steppe since the Tertiary, and provide the geographic and climatic context for the region. Second we describe the major research sites, and the history of the three major entities or programs that have shaped much of the science done in the shortgrass steppe: the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)–Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the International Biological Programme (IBP), and the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program. Grasses have been an important component of the shortgrass steppe of North America since the Miocene (5–24 million years ago) (Axelrod, 1985; Stebbins, 1981). Before that, during the Paleocene and Eocene (34–65 million years ago), the vegetation was a mixture of temperate and tropical mesophytic forests. Two causes have been proposed as explanations for this ancient change from forest to grassland. First, global temperatures decreased rapidly during the Oligocene (24–34 million years ago), creating conditions for a drier climate. These drier conditions, combined with a renewal of the uplift of the Rocky Mountains that had begun during the Paleocene, left the Great Plains in a rain shadow.

The emergency shelter with disaster prevention facilities provides a safe place by construction for emergency situations such as earthquake, nuclear accident etc., which can supply emergency evacuation and temporary residence for refugees. The disaster prevention facilities of emergency shelter are complete sets of measurements which ensure the daily essentials for refugees. The paper classifies the emergency shelters and puts forward their scales and service scopes; it also proposes the setting requirements of disaster prevention facilities for every kind of emergency shelter. The study is not only has advantages to the general plan and distribution of various emergency shelters, but also makes a significant sense of improving the level of disaster resistance and rescue.

Community members who evacuate to shelters may represent the most socially and economically vulnerable group within a hurricane’s affected geographic area. Disaster research has established associations between socioeconomic conditions and adverse effects, but data are overwhelmingly collected retrospectively on large populations and lack further explication. As Hurricane Florence approached North Carolina in September 2018, RTI International developed a pilot survey for American Red Cross evacuation shelter clients. Two instruments, an interviewer-led paper questionnaire and a short message service (SMS text) questionnaire, were tested. A total of 200 evacuees completed the paper survey, but only 34 participated in the SMS text portion of the study. Data confirmed that the sample represented very marginalized coastline residents: 60 percent were unemployed, 70 percent had no family or friends to stay with during evacuation, 65 percent could not afford to evacuate to another location, 36 percent needed medicine/medical care, and 11 percent were homeless. Although 19 percent of participants had a history of evacuating for prior hurricanes/disasters and 14 percent had previously utilized shelters, we observed few associations between previous experiences and current evacuation resources, behaviors, or opinions about safety. This study demonstrates that, for vulnerable populations exposed to storms of increasing intensity and frequency, traditional survey research methods are best employed to learn about their experiences and needs.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted homeless populations and service workers, especially within homeless shelter/hostel settings. To date, there have been few evidence syntheses examining outbreaks of COVID-19 among both homeless shelters residents and service workers, nor has there been a critically engaged summary of relevant infection control and prevention (IPAC) measures. This scoping review offers a timely and much-needed synthesis of COVID-19 prevalence within homeless shelters and a review of current and pertinent IPAC measures. Methods: We conducted a scoping review in June 2021 that synthesized academic and grey literature published from March 2020 to July 2021 pertaining to 1) the prevalence of COVID-19 among both residents and staff in homeless shelters and hostels in high-income countries, and 2) COVID-19 IPAC strategies applied in these settings. Two reviewers independently screened the results of the literature search of several databases that included MEDLINE, PsycInfo, and the WHO’s COVID-19 Global Health Portal. All the extracted data was mapped, categorized, and thematically discussed. Results: Thematic analysis of included literature revealed five key themes: 1) the demographics of COVID-19 in homeless shelters, 2) asymptomatic spread, 3) pre-existing vulnerability of the homeless and shelters, 4) the limited application of IPAC, and 5) IPAC effectiveness. Conclusion: This review offers a useful glimpse into the landscape of COVID-19 outbreaks in homeless shelters/hostels and the major contributing factors to these events. The scoping review revealed that there is no clear indication of generally accepted IPAC standards for homeless populations and shelter care workers. This review also illustrated a great need for future research to establish IPAC best practices as well as additional resources for shelter systems to protect residents and staff at homeless shelters/hostels in high-income countries. Finally, the findings from this review reaffirm that homelessness prevention is a key to limiting disease outbreaks, and the associated negative health outcomes in shelter populations.

Tweet, Justin, Holley Flora, Summer Weeks, Eathan McIntyre e Vincent Santucci. Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument: Paleontological resource inventory (public version). National Park Service, dezembro de 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2289972.

Resumo:
Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument (PARA) in northwestern Arizona has significant paleontological resources, which are recognized in the establishing presidential proclamation. Because of the challenges of working in this remote area, there has been little documentation of these resources over the years. PARA also has an unusual management situation which complicates resource management. The majority of PARA is administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM; this land is described here as PARA-BLM), while about 20% of the monument is administered by the National Park Service (NPS; this land is described here as PARA-NPS) in conjunction with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE). Parcels of state and private land are scattered throughout the monument. Reports of fossils within what is now PARA go back to at least 1914. Geologic and paleontologic reports have been sporadic over the past century. Much of what was known of the paleontology before the 2020 field inventory was documented by geologists focused on nearby Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) and LAKE, or by students working on graduate projects; in either case, paleontology was a secondary topic of interest. The historical record of fossil discoveries in PARA is dominated by Edwin McKee, who reported fossils from localities in PARA-NPS and PARA-BLM as part of larger regional projects published from the 1930s to the 1980s. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has mapped the geology of PARA in a series of publications since the early 1980s. Unpublished reports by researchers from regional institutions have documented paleontological resources in Quaternary caves and rock shelters. From September to December 2020, a field inventory was conducted to better understand the scope and distribution of paleontological resources at PARA. Thirty-eight localities distributed across the monument and throughout its numerous geologic units were documented extensively, including more than 420 GPS points and 1,300 photos, and a small number of fossil specimens were collected and catalogued under 38 numbers. In addition, interviews were conducted with staff to document the status of paleontology at PARA, and potential directions for future management, research, protection, and interpretation. In geologic terms, PARA is located on the boundary of the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range provinces. Before the uplift of the Colorado Plateau near the end of the Cretaceous 66 million years ago, this area was much lower in elevation and subject to flooding by shallow continental seas. This led to prolonged episodes of marine deposition as well as complex stratigraphic intervals of alternating terrestrial and marine strata. Most of the rock formations that are exposed in the monument belong to the Paleozoic part of the Grand Canyon section, deposited between approximately 510 and 270 million years ago in mostly shallow marine settings. These rocks have abundant fossils of marine invertebrates such as sponges, corals, bryozoans, brachiopods, bivalves, gastropods, crinoids, and echinoids. The Cambrian–Devonian portion of the Grand Canyon Paleozoic section is represented in only a few areas of PARA. The bulk of the Paleozoic rocks at PARA are Mississippian to Permian in age, approximately 360 to 270 million years old, and belong to the Redwall Limestone through the Kaibab Formation. While the Grand Canyon section has only small remnants of younger Mesozoic rocks, several Mesozoic formations are exposed within PARA, mostly ranging in age from the Early Triassic to the Early Jurassic (approximately 252 to 175 million years ago), as well as some middle Cretaceous rocks deposited approximately 100 million years ago. Mesozoic fossils in PARA include marine fossils in the Moenkopi Formation and petrified wood and invertebrate trace fossils in the Chinle Formation and undivided Moenave and Kayenta Formations.
