Martin Luther King, Jr., gazes serenely, almost expressionless, in a somber suit and tie before a backdrop of prison bars. Around his neck hangs a booking number, “7089.” Around his head is a brilliant golden halo. The picture is not a mug shot but an icon in the Byzantine tradition. It is, as its Greek inscription says, “Holy Martin.” St. Martin Luther King. This icon is a popular piece of merchandise for a mail-order Company in Vermont. Each January, just before King's birthday they receive a flood of Orders. This phenomenon is an enigma, the fountainhead for a flood of questions. How can a black Baptist minister become the subject of a popular icon? What in American society and culture fostered its creation? Who invokes this great civil rights leader as a saint? But the most basic question is, how can Martin Luther King be considered a saint in the first place? Was it simply because he was slain for the cause of civil rights? Others died for the cause, and there are no icons of them.

AbstractThe Martin and Morris Music Studio (MMMS) imprint permeated the first fifty years of black gospel music. Jointly owned by singer/impresaria Sallie Martin (1895/6–1988) and composer/arranger/pianist/organist Kenneth Morris (1917–88), the MMMS delivered gospel songs to an eager public and offered ordinary Americans the chance to see their names in print as author or composer on the cover of a gospel octavo, copies of which could then be sold to benefit that same ordinary American. Their influence extended far beyond that service, however. Martin and her Singers performed and popularized music bearing the MMMS imprint in venues ranging from small churches in the Deep South to national conventions in Washington, D.C., and widened circulation of MMMS music via Los Angeles recording studios. The unprecedented accomplishments of the MMMS, active from 1940 to 1993, have not been fully explored. Relying on transcribed interviews of the owners by Bernice Johnson Reagon, James Standifer, and others, accounts in historical newspapers, and company archives, this article addresses that void. The centrality of the MMMS in twentieth-century gospel of all types is clarified through examination of contexts for black-owned music publishing in the last century, the owners’ early business models, and their changing roles in the creation, publication, popularization, and dissemination of gospel music for more than fifty years.

Should we suffer boredom in the theatre so long as it can be properly theorized? Dare performance stand alone, without hermeneutical crutches? What are the practicalities of practice-based research? And should we be scared of scare quotes? These are some of the questions asked by Martin Welton, tongue not so much in cheek as brazenly challenging some of the new orthodoxies of theatre studies. Martin Welton is a lecturer in Performance in the School of English and Drama at Queen Mary, University of London. Over the course several years - from late in the 1950s to the early 1970s - Lockheed was embroiled in the Deal of the Century where the company was found guilty of bribing foreign countries governments to select the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter over arguably better alternatives in addressing those nations respective air force needs. Today, Lockheed Martin is the leading contractor on the F-35 Lightning II project, which is intended to produce the worlds most advanced stealth strike-fighter for US armed forces and those of several allied foreign nations. However, the F-35 program has become the single most expensive project in American history and has been beset with serious technical problems, major schedule delays, cost overruns, and the F-35s performance capabilities are seen by many as inferior to the nations potential adversaries fighter aircraft, if not inferior to the aircraft it is intended to replace.

ABSTRACT: Lisa Martin, the newly promoted controller at International Retail Computer Solutions (IRCS), faces an ethical dilemma. According to her calculations, the company should record a substantial inventory impairment loss. However, top management at IRCS is concerned that Martin's proposed inventory impairment adjustment will place the company in violation of an important debt covenant, which would allow the bank to call IRCS's $10 million note. Should Martin insist on keeping her original inventory impairment adjustment? Or should she be a team player and revise the adjustment downward to prevent a debt covenant violation? As students respond to the case questions, they are exposed to a realistic scenario requiring them to think critically about the underlying accounting issues and to consider the ethical implications of Martin's actions. In addition, the case requires them to apply an ethical framework (the AICPA's Code of Professional Conduct) to determine the ethical course of action.

After the 9/11 attack, the US invasion of Afghanistan and later the invasion of Iraq, not only changed the dynamics of global politics but also impacted the US defence industry by reaching a new height. This paper analyzes factors that are impacting the financial performance of Lockheed Martin which is measured via Earnings per share (EPS). After analyzing the data of Lockheed Martin for 20 years using Multivariate regression analysis, results indicate that The Defence budget of Iraq and Goodwill hurts EPS. On the other hand, retained earnings and Total debt positively impact the EPS. The company must focus more on its research & development to keep itself ahead of its competitor. The study suggests that Lockheed Martin should focus on obtaining contracts from various countries, especially those who are the major importers of defence equipment, which will help them in enhancing their performance positively.

The article is devoted to the fate of the Company of Cathay, a joint-stock company established in England in the second half of the 1570s to search for the Northwest Passage to China (the English called this country "Cathay") and to colonise Baffin Land in North America. The company was headed by the navigator Martin Frobisher and merchant Michael Lock, who challenged the Muscovy Company for a monopoly on the exploration of the Arctic seas. The documents (charters, reports, letters, petitions, treatises) directly related to the Company of Cathay and its founders served as the main source base for the study. Although the company was formed as a research project to find a significant northern sea route to Asian countries, the geographical discoveries made by Martin Frobisher in the polar waters of the Americas during three expeditions between 1576 and 1578 led shareholders to decide to colonise the northern lands found. The main reason for founding the colony of Meta Incognita, the first English colony in North America, was the prospect of discovering gold on Baffin Land. Based on materials from the National Archives at Kew, the British Library and published sources, the author analyses the reasons for the company’s failures, including the failure to establish the colony of Meta Incognita. A comprehensive analysis of archival and published materials makes it possible to identify the role of the Company of Cathay in the study and formation of geographical knowledge about North America in the last quarter of the 16th century.

The plant hired a company to run a calibrated turbine meter through the pipes. The total generating capacity at TU Electric’s plants tops 20 million kilowatts. TU Electric’s Martin Lake plant, in Rusk County, Texas, has three units, each with a capacity of 750 megawatts, which makes it the largest-capacity plant in the utility’s system. The first field measurements at the Martin Lake plant were conducted for TU Electric by Encor–America Technologies 1nc. Encor subcontracted with Flow Simulation Services (FSS) to perform a CFD simulation. CFD involves the solution of the governing equations for fluid flow at thousands of discrete points on a computational grid.

Freelance journalist and theatre critic Martin Morrow is clearly excited about rabbits – not just any rabbit of course – specifically those crazy, creative Rabbits who are the subject of his first book, Wild Theatre: The History of One Yellow Rabbit. Well travelled nationally and internationally, this eclectic and dynamic theatre company from Calgary, Alberta has been one of Western Canada’s best-kept secrets, and as Morrow says in his acknowledgements, it was high time someone wrote a book about them. Written with a fresh, journalistic eye, Wild Theatre chronicles the twenty-year history of One Yellow Rabbit (OYR), by investigating the work and aesthetic influences of the artists who originated and who still form the company today. In order to write the book, Morrow was given full access to the members of OYR and to the company files and photos. For the most part, Morrow’s book has a relaxed chronological structure, with “flashbacks” provided to explore OYR’s touring history, and finishes with a meditation on the company’s future.

Subject area Human Resource Management Study level/applicability Postgraduate business students, particularly MBA students. Case overview This case examines the working environment of Fritz Publishing, a small independent South African publishing company. Fritz Publishing was established in 1960 by Nick Fritz. After his retirement, ownership passed to his son, Martin. In 2011, Martin Fritz decided to sell the company to the Prys Group, an international publishing house headquartered in Germany. February 2011 saw the arrival of a newly appointed CEO for Fritz Publishing, Vadim Arshavin, who had already experienced excellent financial results as the head of another publishing house. In the wake of his arrival, the company experienced several changes. The case highlights the challenges at Fritz Publishing that have resulted in a growing sense of dissatisfaction. After Martin Fritz sold Fritz Publishing, the organisational culture shifted quite drastically which created challenges for managers, employees and customers alike. Employees, including some members of management, are de-motivated, disengaged and frustrated because of the leadership style and behaviour of the new CEO Vadim Arshavin and consider their psychological contracts to have been breached. The case explores factors that have helped create this situation. It considers challenges to the sustainability of the organisation given recent events including an internal employee engagement survey and feedback from key customers. The case further examines the potential dangers that toxic leadership creates within organisations and encourages discussion on ways this form of destructive leadership can be handled. Expected learning outcomes The learning objectives to be drawn from the case are: to assess the impact of leadership on organisational culture; to analyse how leadership impacts the psychological contract; to identify the cross-cultural factors at play in an emerging market organisation and to understand the way a toxic leadership style can detrimentally affect a high-performance workplace. In addition, there are further learning objectives that can be explored. These are: to examine the change process and associated challenges with the introduction of new leadership into a family-type organisational culture; to understand how breach can be avoided and/or how the psychological contract can be reconstructed. However, questions of how an anti-suit injunction obtained against a State may be enforced largely remain unanswered.

The emergence of new technologies has changed the way people communicate. Social media have allowed businesses to connect with customers and to market their products more efficiently. However, these platforms also allow customers to share information and opinions with the company and fellow customers, diverting from previous online service encounters which only allowed the interaction between the service provider and the customer. This new digital space of communication is in need of research. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to analyze how customer (dis)affiliation is discursively realized on Facebook. To do so, a corpus of comments published by customers on the Facebook page of a British grocery chain was compiled. The data were analyzed drawing on Appraisal Theory (Martin & White, 2005). The findings show that customers used a varied range of Appraisal resources to evaluate the company and express (dis)affiliation with it and fellow customers.

The selection of samples is carried out using a snowball technique which retrieved as many as 198 distributors registered at the Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Company in Medan, namely; PT. Herbalife Indonesia, PT. Orindo Ayu (Oriflame), PT. Sophi Martin Indonesia, PT. K-link, PT. Tupperware Indonesia and PT. Amway Indonesia. The result of the study finds that entrepreneurial competency and committment simultaneously have a significant influence to the career success of MLM distributors. Moreover, the study finds a partial relationship between the entrepreneurial commitment and motivation that has a significant effect on career success, while the entrepreneurial competency does not partially influence the success of career significantly. The results also show that entrepreneurial motivation is a moderating variable that is able to strengthen the influence of the entrepreneurial commitment to career success, as well as between the entrepreneurial competency and career success.

A corporate mission statement aims to communicate the established goals of a company internally and externally. In this type of statement, attitude plays an important role in the expression of interpersonal linguistic meanings. Therefore, following Martin and Rose’s (2007) systemic functional linguistics (SFL) approach, this paper qualitatively analyzed the mission statements of the companies that hold the top seven spots in Fortune’s corporate reputation rankings in 2021, namely Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Walt Disney, Starbucks, Berkshire Hathaway, and Alphabet, from the perspective of the appraisal system. The results indicate that the most common sub-system of attitude found in these corporate mission statements was positive appreciation. However, it was also found that the distribution patterns of evaluation resource words of the selected mission statements are not quite similar. Further, given the functions of this particular genre, that is, shaping the identity of the company and its employees, it was found that the selected corporate mission statements employ attitudinal resources that are all positive in orientation.

The introduction of the article includes the justification of the necessity to determine the role of the English Muscovy Company in the study of the geography of North America in the last quarter of the 16th century. The monopoly of the Muscovy Company and the significance of this commercial firm in the discovery of the northeast coast and Arctic waters of North America have not yet been studied. Documents (charters, reports, letters, petitions, and treatises) directly related to the organization of English voyages to the American Arctic waters, as well as diplomatic documents, are used as materials. Analysis. The reasons and circumstances of the Muscovy Company’s monopoly on the search for the North-West Passage in North America are studied. The company’s contribution to the organization of the expeditions of Martin Frobisher in 1576 and John Davis in 1585– 1587 is determined. The attempts of the Cathay Company and Humphrey Gilbert at the turn of the 1570s–1580s to deprive “Muscovite” merchants of this privilege are analyzed. It is proven that even at the beginning of the 17th century, the Moscow Company retained a monopoly on the exploration of the Arctic seas. Results. With its monopoly on the search for the North-West Passage and its organizational and financial support, the Muscovy Company made an important contribution to the exploration of the north-eastern coast of North America in the last quarter of the 16th century. English navigators had the opportunity to explore Arctic waters, step by step shaping the modern geographical shape of North America on maps.

The Atlantic Theater Company has been one of Off-Broadway's most successful theatre companies over the past twenty years, having won twelve Tony Awards, eight Lucille Lortel Awards, thirteen Obie Awards, and three Outer Critics Circle Awards. The company, originally founded in 1983 by the playwright David Mamet and the actor William H. Macy, has mounted over one hundred plays, many by new writers. Included among its successes are Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore and The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Woody Allen's A Second Hand Memory and Writer's Block, the revival of David Mamet's American Buffalo, Celebration and The Room by Harold Pinter, Mojo and Night Heron by Jez Butterworth, and the new musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind's play Spring Awakening, which won the 2007 Tony for best new musical. But producing plays is only part of Atlantic's mission: it also runs the Atlantic Acting School, which operates both as a private conservatoire and an undergraduate training studio in conjunction with New York University. Its curriculum focuses on Practical Aesthetics, the acting technique developed by Mamet and Macy. Mary McCann, in conversation here with NTQ Contributing Editor Ian Watson, is a founding member of the Atlantic Theater Company and Director of the Atlantic Acting School, where she also teaches. She continues to act, having appeared in many of the company's productions, on Broadway, on television, and in several independent films. The conversation took place over two meetings at the Atlantic Acting School in New York City, on 25 April and 5 June 2007.

The Advanced Materials Institute (AMI) is the materials research arm of the Colorado Advanced Technology Institute (CATI), a state agency created in 1983 by the state General Assembly as an economic development initiative involving academic, industry, and government sectors. AMI represents a unique process in academic research: long-term materials needs of industry members are addressed by university investigators, with federal agencies providing the major source of funding.AMI is a consortium of four research universities (Colorado School of Mines as the lead institution, Colorado State University, and the Universities of Colorado and Denver) and a present industrial membership of nine corporations (AMAX Inc., Adolph Coors Company, Digital Equipment Corporation, Gates Company, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Manville, Martin Marietta, and Telectronics). The Institute is governed by a Board of Directors with representatives from each participating organization. Sustaining memberships, which do not include representation on the Board, are available; memberships of both kinds are open to non-Colorado-based companies. The long-term materials needs of industry members provide AMI's research agenda; many items, once identified, become company-shared interests. Requests for proposals, based on the agenda, are distributed to the affiliated universities for competitive awarding of seed funds. Proposals receive peer review and the Board selects those to be funded.

This study explored the implementation of the integrated production system program established by PT. HM Sampoerna Tbk Indonesia, a leading Indonesian tobacco company, and examined its potential and constraints. The program was intended to develop cooperation between the company and its tobacco suppliers to get a sustainable supply of tobacco from farmers with quantity, quality and price set according to the company’s standards. This study employed an interpretive research design, following a post-positivist paradigm. The data were collected by means of in-depth interviews, observation and document study and were analyzed using the key tenet of Martin Heidegger’s interpretive phenomenology. The interpretive process was achieved through hermeneutic circle to understand how individuals involved in the program interpreted the program including their own experiences as well as their interactions with other parties. The results of the study indicated that the created contract farming partnership was capable of providing the company with a sustainable supply of tobacco and increasing its production volume. Nevertheless, it was unable to improve the quality of the farmers’ lives as it was chiefly intended to meet the company’s commercial needs. The results from the study have direct relevance to policy makers in Indonesia, especially those that have been implemented contract farming and to agribusiness companies seeking contractual relationships for commodity production.

This study replicated a study by Martin (1993) to examine the corporate perceptions of the current and future roles and activities of the occupational health nurse and the nurse's value added contributions in the local operating units of a large Fortune 100 company. A descriptive design was used for this study. The sample consisted of 44 corporate officials. The study findings are consistent with Martin (1993) and suggested that management is aware of the traditional roles and activities of the nurse, including direct care, education and counseling, and case management. The desired future activities identified were trend analysis, conducting plant rounds, and developing health programs specific to the needs of the corporation. The activities identified as adding value to the corporation included: planning and developing educational programs specific to the needs of the corporation, supervising the provision of nursing care, assisting in rehabilitation of injured workers, and providing follow up on workers' compensation claims. Corporate officials are aware of the traditional roles of the nurse. However, they may not be aware of the newer nursing roles, such as trend analysis, research, and budget development.

Most enterprises in the developed, and developing world, are facing frequent, irregular and significant changes in their environment, which shorten the life span of both present products and future opportunities and increase the unpredictability of their nature. The enterprises which seem best able to deal with these changes are those that focus on opportunity recognition and capture. In other words, those that engage in the entrepreneurial process. This paper is based on an ongoing research study into entrepreneurial companies in America and Europe of different sizes and in different stages of development, from small (Martin Aviation, Controlonics, and D. L. Martin) to medium size (Mettler-Toledo and MHZ) and large (Johnson and Johnson, 3M, Rhone-Poulenc, and DEC). In this research we have observed common patterns of opportunity, focus and capture at all levels of the organization as well as the mechanisms which are needed to maintain direction and control of the organization as the company increases in scale and diversity in order to harvest broader and increased amounts of value. This paper describes both these characteristics and what is needed to transform a more traditional organization into an entrepreneurial one.

In The Larkin's Technologies of Trust, Zeynep Çelik Alexander uses the card ledger invented by Darwin D. Martin, corporate secretary for the Larkin Company, as a starting point for a new history of a well-known modernist building: the Larkin Administration Building in Buffalo, New York, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Founded in 1875 as a soap manufacturer, the Larkin Company had grown dramatically by the beginning of the twentieth century, in large part because of innovative marketing strategies made possible by ingenious information-processing techniques. But it was also thanks to Wright's designs for office equipment—informed by principles of modularity and interchangeability—that armies of “human computers” were able to maintain this information regime. Çelik Alexander argues that the bureaucracy made possible by the Larkin Administration Building's architecture has been a blind spot in historiography; she aims to offer an architecturally oriented account of the history of data as epistemic unit, contending that the Larkin's protodatabase was, first and foremost, a moral technology predicated on managing networks of trust.

Purpose – This paper aims to examine the association between financial reporting quality in target companies and acquisition profitability in a sample of 280 acquisitions in South Korea between 2002 and 2011. Design/methodology/approach – Using the accruals quality measure developed by McNichols (2002) as a proxy for financial reporting quality, it was found that high-quality financial reporting in target companies is associated with more profitable acquisitions for the acquirer, as measured by the acquirer’s announcement returns. Findings – It was found that high-quality financial reporting in target companies is associated with more profitable acquisitions for the acquirer, as measured by the acquirer’s announcement returns. This finding suggests that higher-quality accounting information leads to better decision-making during acquisitions. It was also found that the importance of financial reporting quality increases when information about the target company is scarce. In addition, it was found that the financial reporting quality of target companies is less important when the agency costs of the acquirer are high. Practical implications – This analysis also complements several recent papers that examine target firm accounting information and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) returns (Shalev and Martin, 2009; McNichols and Stubben, 2012). By expanding this analysis, the authors help to provide a more complete understanding of how target firm’s accounting quality relates to the valuation of the target company and future expected synergies in M&A deal practice. Originality/value – This study is one of a growing body of literature on the relations between financial reporting quality and investment decisions (Bens and Monahan, 2004; Biddle and Hilary, 2006; Hope and Thomas, 2008; McNichols and Stubben, 2008; Biddle et al., 2009; Francis and Martin, 2010). These results extend and generalize the results of prior studies, in that data pertinent to acquisition profitability of M&As in South Korea are used.
