The thesis examines the relationship between Martha Stewart's rendition of domesticity and a broader cultural trend of the late 1990s U.S. domestic retreatism. It argues that the mode of construction and representation of the "domestic dream" in Stewart's programs cannot be examined outside of such concepts as class and ethnicity, whose understanding depends on the cultural, social, and political context of a given era, a context, in which they become transparent as aspects of the Western (white, patriarchal) status quo. Performing a deconstructive reading of these categories as employed by Stewart in the process of creation of her media persona, the thesis examines what the negative as well as positive reactions to "Martha Stewart" convey about the condition of American society of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The protagonist Martha in Doris Lessing’s Martha Quest is born to white British settler parents and grows up in a British colony in southern Africa in the 1930s. Although officially the coloniser rather than the colonised, Martha tries to reject this role mentally, verbally, and physically. This essay aims to show that a postcolonial reading of Martha in relation to the colonial context helps in understanding her double consciousness and, more specifically, her inability to find a real or lasting sense of home. Using Homi Bhabha’s concept of unhomeliness, the essay argues that Martha does not truly feel at home anywhere, because the “unhomely” always disturbs the “homely.” Through close reading of the text, it shows how Martha tries to find a sense of home in four areas of her life: her physical home, nature, her body, and her mind. This essay finds that despite Martha’s efforts in moving from her family home to rented accommodation, from the bush to the city, from girlhood to womanhood, and from her individual thoughts to the solidarity of others, she still does not feel at home anywhere. Whenever she starts to feel comfortable in a place or situation, unhomely moments, such as reminders of her nationality, race, or class, always disturb the homely feelings of belonging. Ultimately, Martha cannot escape her unhomeliness.

The thesis „Martha Nussbaum’s philosophy with regard to its feministic orientation” represents Martha Nussbaum’s theory of the good life, demonstrates it as a feminist philosophy and locates it in the context of feminist theory. It is shown that Martha Nussbaum’s capability approach in connection with her reflections about the political liberalism and communitarianism is an important contribution for a feministic ethic of equality. Martha Nussbaum combines questions of justice with a theory of the good life. In her demand for the ethicing of the political, lies the relevance of her philosophy for feminism.

This dissertation seeks to understand how Martha Medeiros' chronicles represent the common subject. To do so, it is given an overview of the construction of the subject’s concept throughout history, as well as the role of the chronicle in Brazil and Latin America. Thus, the scenario is described to situate the analysis. The study uses as corpus the production of Martha Medeiros, published in the Donna's pages in the Zero Hora newspaper from September 2011 to February 2012. The methodology used is the content analysis, guided by a path made by Nísia Martins do Rosário (2006) consisted of four steps: Which chronicle languages are used in the analyzed texts? How these elements are being used? Which senses are being produced in the selected texts? and How the signification process is presented?. Generally, the research concludes that the chronicles of Martha Medeiros represent the common subject by addressing issues and using a language capable of producing meanings relevant to readers. It is possible to notice that the sense given by the texts refers to something that happens to most of the people, or to the common subject. This can explain why Martha Medeiros’ chronicles have reached this level.

Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway met in Key West in 1937, married in 1941, and divorced in 1945. Gellhorn's work exhibits a strong influence from Hemingway's work, including collaboration on her work during their marriage. I will discuss three of her six novels: WMP (1934), Liana (1944), and Point of No Return (1948). The areas of influence that I will rely on in many ways follow the stages Harold Bloom outlines in Anxiety of Influence. Gellhorn's work exposes a stage of influence that Bloom does not describe-which I term collaborative. By looking at Hemingway's influence in Gellhorn's writing the difference between traditional literary influence and collaborative influence can be compared and analyzed, revealing the footprints left in a work by a collaborating author as opposed to simply an influential one.

Resumo:
Vulnerability is one of the key notions in contemporary sciences and humanities, as well as in the self-understanding of a human being. It encompasses our ontological fragility and the existential mutability and unpredictability of the world, our relationships, and ourselves. The multidimensionality of the notion is a subject of intense academic research. In this thesis, I discuss whether vulnerability should assume more importance in philosophical anthropology than autonomy, or whether they are equally important. The writings of Martha Nussbaum offer a particularly rich perspective from which to reflect upon this problem. In my thesis I set the following aims: 1) to systematise and critically evaluate the notion of vulnerability in the works of Nussbaum; 2) to examine its relation to the notion of autonomy; 3) to identify and evaluate the advantages and challenges that stem from thinking of the two together. In Nussbaum’s early writings, ontological vulnerability is a starting point for her anthropological reflections. The analysis of her later writings unveils that a profound understanding of vulnerability requires that we distinguish between various forms of vulnerability, and consider it in tandem with – and not in opposition to – the notion of autonomy. Drawing closer attention to Nussbaum’s understanding of imagination, enriched by a reflection on the relationship of imagination to autonomy, appears fruitful in addressing the challenges that stem from the intertwining of autonomy and vulnerability. Apart from imagination’s role in intersubjective understanding, it is central for an understanding of oneself as a subject who, despite his/her limitations, has agency. Imagination conditions the capacity to strive for freedom within the context of our fundamental vulnerability, to reach beyond our immediate conditioning but within the context of such conditioning. Imagination thus becomes extremely important for an ethics between vulnerability and autonomy.

Resumo:
This essay aims to examine Martha Nussbaum's proposal for a classical defense of reform in liberal education and her critique of utility thinking in higher education. I want to explore how Nussbaum uses history to create an ethical alternative that cultivates both moral and intellectual virtues, which she considers to be crucial for the survival of democracy. In examining Nussbaum's use of Aristotle, I focus on her work as a proposal for institutional implementation of an Aristotelian epistemology and the cultivation of the individual as an ethical political subject. This study highlights the epistemological, educational and political ideas that form the basis of Nussbaum's ideals. I intend, however, to go beyond a contextualizing reading and thus establish a dialogue with a radical intersubjectivity to respond to Nussbaum's ambitions to recognize human vulnerabilities as assets for reason. From this perspective, I problematise Nussbaum's aspirations for reform and argue that she maintains a loyalty to an ideal that stands in contrast to the possibilities for epistemological and thus ethical political change.

Marta Medeiros is an important contemporary chronicler. She usually writes about everyday themes, which mostly involves reflections about human behavior. She is a well-known author, quoted in several blogs and also on social networks, which undoubtedly spread and form opinions. The books published by Medeiros are almost always on the best-seller lists and often receive indications to literary awards, which are, sometimes, received by her. These were some of the reasons which initially motivated the purpose of this research: to check what there is in her texts that attracts this range of heterogeneous readers. In order to conduct this study, concepts of the Modern Cognitive Linguistics, which study the great ability of the human brain to perform projections, were used. Projections are an ability believed to be a fundamental part of the human cognition to our survival. It is known that, due to projections, we can use literary texts not only as entertainment while reading, but also, in some situations, to educate, moralize and persuade. The corpus of this research is made of chronicles from Medeiros’s last two chronicle books: “Doidas e Santas” (2008) and “Feliz por nada” (2011). By writing about everyday facts, Martha presents many reflections about life and, when expressing opinions, she uses parables, metaphors and metonymies. It was judged important to verify and understand the processes of projection and the parables used in the chronicles, intending to visualize their persuasive effects. Moreover, special attention was given to metaphors and metonymies present in the texts, which are widely used in projection, and also very often responsible for transmitting the author’ intended messages. Linguistic “strategies” present in the texts, which make them popular among the readers, were also investigated. Furthermore, other mechanisms... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
In this M.A. thesis, we analysed the work of the war correspondent Martha Gellhorn which we categorised as 'war journalism' according to Cunha (2012b.). Based on the proposal of critical analysis of narrative by Luiz Gonzaga Motta (2013), we have directed our focus especially toward the narrative construction of Gellhorn reports, passing by the war scenario and the ‘place where she sits’ (CUNHA, 2010; 2012a; CUNHA E CORRÊA, 2011): a woman who is war correspondent, writer and journalist who at same time combines journalism and literature – that is the called literally journalism (CASTRO, 2002; PENA, 2011). We have selected four articles extracted from the Brazilian version of The Face of War (2009) to compose the research corpus of this thesis. The articles have been written in four distinct times during the covers performed by Gellhorn: in 1938, during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39); in Finland, 1939, and Netherlands, in 1944-5, while was occurring the II war world (1939-45); and also during the Vietnam War, in 1966. In our analysis, we have highlighted the particular sight of the major narrator Martha Gellhorn, who tells the history of her time and describes war with emotion, sensibility and anger without committing what Eugenio Bucci (2006) identified as the “ethical sin” of journalists, since she does not hide her reviews and convictions, adopts a honest posture in her reports and, whenever possible, clarifies her personal interventions. The results of our analysis showed that , in her narrative Gellhorn combines characteristics of factual journalism and literature and, in addition, provides her own interpretation to facts, without des-informing her readers.

This study is about the implantation and the work education of the North American missionary Matha Hite Watts between the end of the century XIX and the beginning of the century XX, in the city of Piracicaba, located in the state of São Paulo. The analysis to interpret the historical interfaces of the period is based in three points: gender, education and mission. Martha Watts, is considerate the first Methodist educator in Brazil. Her reputation was built in 1881, in the city of Piracicaba, where she founded the Piracicabano School, which still exists. Her educational experience was relevant for the Methodists Schools performance, adopting an innovative ped agogy, having the templates of the European countries and also from her home place. During the final century XIX in Brazil, Martha Watts showed determination in facing the difference of a new culture and environment with habits, gestures and words unknown for her. This study sought from the dialog of the letters left by the missionary, contributing for the research line in Brazilian History Education. The missionary work of Martha Watts is a valuable legacy for the study in History of Education, Women s History and Gender.(AU)
Martha Watts, é considerada a primeira educadora metodista no Brasil.

Abstract: Marta Medeiros is an important contemporary chronicler. The corpus of this research is made of chronicles from Medeiros's last two chronicle books: "Doidas e Santas" (2008) and "Feliz por nada" (2011). By writing about everyday facts, Martha presents many reflections about life and, when expressing opinions, she uses parables, metaphors and metonymies. It was judged important to verify and understand the processes of projection and the parables used in the chronicles, intending to visualize their persuasive effects. Moreover, special attention was given to metaphors and metonymies present in the texts, which are widely used in projection, and also very often responsible for transmitting the author' intended messages. Linguistic "strategies" present in the texts, which make them popular among the readers, were also investigated. Furthermore, other mechanisms... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

The three first books show to us the exterior spaces while the last one reveals the interior spaces - the private ones -, described in an autobiographical way by the Argentinian writer born in Salta. After that we analyse the novel Juanamanuela mucha mujer (1980), by Martha Mercader, in which she tells the life of Juana Manuela Gorriti and re-reads her writings. This is a book we consider a contemporary historical novel, in which the lifetime of the writer from Salta is recreated in a fiction revealing to the readers aspects and ideas already implicit in the own discourse of this novelist of the nineteenth century. In this way, it is possible to conclude that the conquest of the feminine space benefited itself with the positions and propositions of Juana Manuela Gorriti. It is possible to be said once they reached an explicit position about the questions and the feminine universe in Martha Mercader's narrative, whose book reaffirms and solidifies the feminine victories and advances already begun in the ninenteenth century besides asseverating the existence of a feminine writing which has been amplified and enlarges itself more and more.

Resumo:
Introduction - Malaria is a major global health problem, with more than 500 million reported cases and at least 1 million deaths each year. The main problem with malaria control is the emerging drug resistance. Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) developed widespread resistance to antimalarial drugs such as chloroquine (CQ) and mefloquine, but not to the artemisinins. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended artemisinin combination therapy (ACT) for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria in all chloroquine resistance areas. However, P. falciparum has recently started to display resistance to these ACTs, highlighting the need for new chemotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of P. falciparum infections. Aims - The aims of this study were: (i) to design and synthesise a new series of antimalarial hybrid drugs, consisting of dihydroartemisinin (DHA) and aminoquinoline moieties bound covalently through different, very distinctive linkers; (ii) to determine the in vitro antiplasmodial activity and cytotoxicity of the synthesised series; (iii) to ascertain whether the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of the promising compounds would be carried over in vivo against Plasmodium vinckei (P. vinckei); and, (iv) to obtain an indication of the pharmacokinetic properties of this class of antimalarial drugs by performing snapshot pharmacokinetic analysis. Methods - DHA was coupled via an aminoethylether bond to various aminoquinolines to give hybrids and hybrid-dimers. CQ-susceptible (D10 and 3D7) and CQ-resistant (Dd2) strains of P. falciparum were used to determine the in vitro antiplasmodial activity. In vitro cytotoxicity was assessed using a mammalian cell-line (Chinese Hamster Ovarian, CHO). The antiproliferative activity of the hybrid-dimers was tested against three cell lines; renal adenocarcinoma (TK-10), breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and melanoma (UACC-62). P. vinckei-infected mice were treated with the hybrid drugs for four days at a dosage of 0.8 mg/kg, 2.5 mg/kg, 7.5 mg/kg or 15 mg/kg intraperitoneally (ip) or orally (po), with 2.7 mg/kg, 8.3 mg/kg, 25 mg/kg or 50 mg/kg, in order to determine their antimalarial activity. A snapshot oral and intravenous (IV) pharmacokinetic study was performed. Results - All compounds were obtained as the 10-β-isomers and were isolated as the oxalate salts. Low nanomolar in vitro antiplasmodial activities were displayed by several compounds in this series, with IC50 values ranging from 5.15 to 29.5 nM, in comparison with the values of 2.09–5.11 nM and 21.54–157.90 nM for each of DHA and CQ respectively. All compounds displayed good selectivity towards P. falciparum in vitro (selectivity index (SI) ≥ 20). Two of the hybrids, featuring non-methylated and methylated two-carbon diaminoalkyl linkers, exerted potent in vivo antimalarial activities, with ED50 values of 1.1 and 1.4 mg/kg by ip route and 12 and 16 mg/kg po, respectively. Long-term monitoring of parasitaemia showed a complete cure of mice (without recrudescence) at 15 mg/kg ip and at 50 mg/kg po for these two hybrids, whereas artesunate was able to provide a complete cure only at 30 mg/kg ip and 80 mg/kg po. Conclusions - These compounds may provide a lead into a new class of antimalarial drugs so badly needed for treatment of resistant strains. Despite shorter half-lives and moderate oral bioavailability in comparison with DHA, two of the compounds of this series were able to cure malaria in mice at very low dosages, implicating extremely active metabolites. The optimum linker length for antimalarial activity was found to be a diaminoalkyl linker consisting of two carbon atoms, either unmethylated or bearing a single methyl group.

Resumo:
How war is depicted matters vitally to all of us. In the vast literature on war representation, little attention is paid to the fact that where the war recorder1stands crucially affects the portrayal. Should the writer be present on the battle-field, and, if so, where exactly? Should the recording figure be present in the text, and, if so, in what guise? 'Standing' differs from person to person, conflict to conflict, and between genders. Therefore, this thesis focuses on one particular war recorder in one particular war: the American journalist and fiction-writer, Martha Gellhorn (1908-98), in the European Theatre of Operations during World War Two. The fact that Gellhorn was a woman affected how she could and did place herself in relation to battle - but gender, though important, was not the only factor. Her course in and around war was dazzling: hitching rides, stowing away, travelling on dynamite-laden ships through mined waters, flying in ancient planes and deadly fighter jets, driving from battle-field to battle-field, mucking in, standing out. Her trajectory within her prose is equally versatile: she zooms in and out like a camera lens from impassiveness to intense involvement to withdrawal. The thesis is organised along the same spectrum. The first two chapters plot the co- ordinates forming the zero point on the graph of Gellhorn's Second World War writings (earlier American war correspondence, the 1930s' New Reportage, Gellhorn's upbringing and journalistic apprenticeship). Chapter Three then shows her in the guise of self-effacing, emotionally absent recorder. Moving from absence to presence, Chapter Four considers Martha Gellhorn in the field and Chapter Five 'Martha Gellhorn' in the text. Chapter Six describes the shift from presence to participation, before reaching the end of the parabola in Gellhorn's disillusionment in the power of writing to reform and her concerns about women's presence in the war zone. Given that positioning is the central concern, it is important to note the placement of Martha Gellhorn within the thesis itself. She stands as the central, pivotal example of the war recorder, illuminated by various contexts and comparisons with other writers (notably Ernest Hemingway, to whom she was married from 1940 to 1945). As a result of this approach, there are necessarily stretches of the text from which she is absent, as the survey turns to theoretical and comparative discussion. The hope is that this methodology reveals why Gellhorn, in the field and in the text, went where she did.

Abstract: The present study aims at contributing to the discussion concerning the technical procedures for the formation of the actor-dancer. In order to do that, it analyzes two formative proposals of body-in-art, Modern Dance/Martha Graham and the method of work developed by LUME - Nucleus of Interdisciplinary Research on Theater from Unicamp. It also identifies and describes the principles of these two practices, correlating them for, thus, analyzing the possibilities of similarities between them. From the practical experience with both techniques, it was speculated that there could exist common principles between both and relations between the technical works developed, although the scenic results are different and do not constitute an object of interpretation in this study. This way, it was analyzed the possibility of dialogue between some principles that compose the practical aspect of these proposals, having as a starting point the field work carried out along with Carlos Simioni, founder of LUME, and with Nair Moura, teacher of modern dance and Cecy Frank's disciple

“Socrates, it is said, did not attend to tragedies,” wrote Clement Rosset in his book Tragic Philosophy. According to the American philosopher Martha C. Nussbaum, it is specifically this anti-tragic impulse that has characterized philosophy since Plato. In the nineteenth century, the Nietzsche of The Birth of Tragedy had already declared the murder of tragedy by philosophy; although Nussbaum generally agrees with the diagnosis of the German philosopher, she adds an innovative element to it. Indeed, she sees in Aristotelian philosophy a breach in tradition: a counterargument to Platonist theory as well as a continuity of tragic thought. Aristotle, the first great thinker of tragedy, had already given an important role to fortune (tuchè) in his ethical theory. However, this ontological vulnerability, that is the fact that human beings are to a certain extent at the mercy of forces beyond their control, a phenomenon that we will try to think of as the tragic content of existence, would be precisely what, according to our author, would make it possible to found a contemporary philosophy that is “fully human”. However, in order to apprehend this tragic component, the perceiving being must present an organization of the world that allows him to see it as such. For Nussbaum, this reconfiguration of experience would be possible through imagination; more specifically, through literature. Moreover, the moral imagination hereby proposed by our author is, specifically, the encounter with life’s fundamentally tragic components. We can therefore say that, by relying on the Aristotelian method as well as on tragic experience, Nussbaum belongs to a tradition that addresses the notion of moral imagination and makes a rich and particular contribution to it.

Through examining the life of Martha Jane Knowlton Coray, a nineteenth-century Mormon woman, this thesis establishes an analytical framework for studying the lives of Mormon women in territorial Utah. Their faith, femininity, and the frontier form the boundaries in which their lives are studied. Their faith was primarily defined by the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, such as a belief in a restored gospel and priesthood, temples, and polygamy. These unique beliefs also fostered an identity as a chosen people and contributed to hostile feelings from their neighbors. Persecution followed and the Latter-day Saint community responded by isolating themselves geographically and ideologically from their perceived enemies. This isolation, in turn, elevated the importance of LDS doctrine and culture in Mormon women's lives.Mormon women also brought to Utah territory Northeastern notions of domesticity promulgated through women's magazines of the time. In Utah, local newspapers also forwarded the ideals of purity, piety, submissiveness, and virtue. Mormon women claimed to implement these values in their lives, but Protestant women found their acceptance of polygamy an insult to womanhood. Finally, Mormon women lived on the western frontier, isolated from markets in a desert. Such circumstances inevitably affected their lives. They had to sacrifice convenience, economic stability, and physical comforts while establishing a reliable food supply, irrigation systems, schools, and homes. Domestic production of food stuffs and goods became essential to a family's survival. This picture of Mormon women, though generally accurate, is not enough to examine the many unique facets of their lives. The triad of faith, femininity, the frontier sets the boundaries for the study, but does not account for the differences between each woman's unique personality and circumstances. I have chosen Martha Jane Knowlton Coray to test the boundaries established in this framework. As a believer, Martha was concerned with building the Kingdom of God. She followed Brigham Young's 1870s directives and her own ambitions to sell medicinal products throughout Utah Territory. Doctrine regarding eternal families and her domestic ideals no doubt contributed to her choice to have twelve children. But Martha and Howard failed at their attempt to practice polygamy, and poverty prevented Martha from doing as much for her children as she would have liked. Martha's life illustrates that although the greatest influences in Mormon women's lives can be identified, the individual paths followed were forged by choice, personality, and determination.

The education of the emotions is a valuable tool not always taken into account in the development of the democratic, egalitarian background essential to empower citizens. Perhaps the difficulty lies in the fact that, firstly, it is necessary to probe the possibilities of educability of emotions. Martha Nussbaum is one of the contemporary philosophers who have devoted much of their work to the study of emotions, and from her theory, conclusions can be drawn about the question of their educability. Her theory of emotions can be situated within a set of theories that understand emotions as cognitive, which turns literature into a useful tool for their education. However, the author does not put forward an explicit methodology for such development from narrative. To this end, in this interview Nussbaum is asked about the concept of self-conscious reflection as a feasible proposal to enable the education of emotions, as well as about whether a list of democratic emotions” can be built from her theory. Also, in this context, Nussbaum responds and elaborates on these themes.

The purpose of the research is threefold. The reasons why agricultural co-operatives converted and were still converting to agricultural companies were looked at first. This was done, secondly, to determine which business form was the best for new and emerging era farmers. Lastly the changes to the Co-operative Act (9111981) were scrutinised in order to determine the effect of the new Co-operative Act (14/2005), which has been published but the date of commencement is not yet known, on the form of business selected. Chapter 1 is an introductory chapter, in which the problem is stated, as well as the method of investigation which was followed. The problem is stated as follows: Agricultural co-operatives, which played a huge role in the farming activities of farmers in the past, have change drastically in form and the manner in which business is done. A large number of the traditional agricultural co-operatives have converted to agricultural companies. The developmental history of agricultural cooperatives and reasons for conversion to agricultural companies are important in determining which business form would be to the best benefit of the modern and emerging farmer. The influence of the new Co-operative Act No. 14 of 2005, which was published in the Government Gazette on 18 August 2005, is also investigated. In chapter 2 we looked at the developmental history of agricultural co-operatives, firstly abroad and then in South Africa. Agricultural co-operatives and agricultural companies were investigated in chapter 3 and 4 respectively in order to determine the difference in business forms, after which a comparison is made. The essence, composition, structure and external organisation of both business forms were investigated. The operational investigation was discussed in chapter 5, where reasons for conversion could be identified. The reasons why agricultural co-operatives converted to companies were determined and it was clear that conversion took place due to political reasons, business considerations and the possibilities which the company format could offer, which were not possible in co-operative form. The reasons were therefore not any negative characteristics or problems in the co-operative form. On the basis of the above, the conclusion was reached that the co-operative form would best serve a new era or emerging farmer. Chapter 7 deals with the new Co-operative Act and it is clear that the government is focussing on supporting the so-called "previously disadvantaged agricultural cooperatives. The issues of equality and poverty are also addressed strongly in the sense that co-operative structures should be put in place to assist in furthering equality and relieve poverty. The reaction of the ABC (Agricultural Business Chamber) to the Act was also discussed. After this chapter the conclusion that that the co-operative sector can best address the needs of the emerging farmer, was confirmed. A new or young farmer needs the assistance and advice of an agricultural co-operative due to the co-operative benefits which helshe can enjoy. Government will also go out of its way to support agricultural co-operatives where necessary and the influence of the new Act is very positive for agricultural co-operatives. As agricultural co-operatives grow stronger, they can convert to agricultural companies, thereby acquiring other benefits.

One of the most serious phenomena plaguing families and societies worldwide is teenage pregnancy. In South Africa teenage mothers are permitted to return to schools after giving bith however, not much is done to support these mothers in order to ensure that they are not psychosocially vulnerable and not drop out of school due to possible stress, frustration and lack of scholastic progress. This is where this study is located. This was a Qualitative study that used symbolic drawings accompanied by short descriptive narratives and individual, semi-structured interviews as data collection methods. The study involved 10 teenage mothers who had been re-admitted to schools after giving birth. The participants were aged 15 and 16 and is grades 9 and 10. The findings show that teenage mothers enjoyed family support, had dreams for the future, were anchored in religion and spirituality, had determination and that they had abilities to learn from mistakes. I could not locate a study that had focused on the typical vulnerabilities and empowerment of teenage mothers. Therefore, this study provides useful insight into the factors that are known to render young girls vulnerable to teenage pregnancy and the resultant motherhood and the personal and exological processes that combine in complex ways in order to enable young mothers to cope resiliently. The findings add to theory and have implications for practice
