This short essay provides a summary of various interpretations of the concept, marginality, with particular focus on positive conceptualizations. From this backdrop, a new term, transcendent marginality, is presented. It is suggested that this term more clearly highlights the emancipatory potential of marginality—both for those occupying marginal positions and for those who may be at (or near) the center but who recognize the inherent oversimplistic, monolithic view of center–periphery dichotomies.

Abstract This article examines the “mainstreaming” of Sowa Rigpa (Tibetan medicine) into primary healthcare in Ladakh, Himalayan India. It explores fields largely overlooked by existing studies of medical integration, such as the social dynamics of public health facilities, the effects of limited drug supplies, and changes in medicine production. Although Sowa Rigpa practitioners experience aspects of their integration as positive, it is also forcing approaches toward prescription practice, patient care, and pharmaceutical production that are at odds with their clinical, social, ethical, and practical grounding. The article argues that integration is exacerbating existing inequalities while creating new forms of hardship and marginality. However, paradoxically, only by occupying such marginal spaces can the amchi continue practicing Sowa Rigpa in a recognizable form. The article later reflects on what the Ladakhi case tells us about the Indian government’s policy of “rational integration” and contributes to debates concerning subaltern therapeutic modes and medical pluralism.

Marginality takes a particular place in any group, be it social, cultural or therapeutic. This article discusses a hypothesis considering marginality in a group as an area of particular interest for the process of change. Marginality considered as a border space between the group inside and outside, offers an important potential, both creative and destructive.

The article deals with an attempt to single out verbal representations of marginalityin French novels of the 20th century, to prove the productivity of using specific linguopoetic meansin portraying marginality as well as to analyse peculiarities of their using by different authors. We found out that each author invokes specific themes and finds his own linguistic and stylisticmeans to represent marginality in fictional text.

Resumo:
Africanist discourse today displays a strong, widespread and growing sense of optimism about Africa's economic future. After decades of decline and stagnation in which Africa found itself reduced to the margins of the global economic stage, upbeat Afro-optimism seems fully justified. One only needs to consider African economies' solid growth rates, the emergence of new export markets earning unprecedented quantities of foreign exchange, and the rise of novel groups such as innovative African entrepreneurs (Taylor 2012) and urban-based middle classes (Simone 2004). Ironically, Africa's bright future stands in strong contrast to the stagnancy of European and American economic powers, once seen as superior to their African relatives. Deeply held feelings of Afro-pessimism, affecting intellectuals as well as ordinary Africans, are thus giving way to almost millennial expectations of Africa's economic future: the continent's imminent catching up with a degree of private and public prosperity so commonly registered elsewhere on the globe. Some go as far as to declare the rise of a proper African renaissance wherein Africa can (finally!) claim its rightful position on the global stage.

The theatre season of the year I arrived in Canada was marked by The Kiss of the Spider Woman. Later, while watching it receive all the Tonys that it did, I noted, in front of a fellow actor, how unimaginable it would be for, say, Peter Brook, Eugenio Barba and Heiner Muller – in short, the established theatre people in Europe – to rejoice in a standing ovation to a piece that through “sizzling” song and dance “celebrates” the tragedy of a gay man and a revolutionary in a Latin American prison. And how this still remains the most important distinction in the “culture of theatre” between the two continents, in terms of both ethics and aesthetics, as obvious and banal as the comparison may seem. I was promptly instructed then that, yes, there is “them” – commercial theatre, and there is “us” – fringe theatre, serious theatre to be exact, and although both may constitute the theatre culture at large, the distinction is quite clear, here in North America, too.

A consideration of the position of Edward Said as exiled intellectual and cultural critic can spur a fruitful discussion on the location of travel and migrant identity within postcolonial criticism. This article looks at the representations of the exile and the migrant, of cosmopolitanism and marginality, in the work of critics and writers of postcoloniality such as Said, Auerbach, Spivak, JanMohamed, Aijaz Ahmad, Kwame Anthony Appiah, Salman Rushdie, Vikram Seth, Hanif Kureishi and Bharati Mukherjee.
