Un homme de 55 ans est examiné à la consultation des pathologies du pied du CHU de Montpellier pour une tendinopathie bilatérale d’Achille. Il a pour antécédents une paraplégie spastique évolutive, un retard mental léger, un retard d’acquisition de la marche marqué par une démarche spastique, une difficulté à participer aux activités physiques et sportives scolaires depuis l’enfance. Il rapporte, ce qui est confirmé par sa mère présente lors de la consultation, une aggravation progressive des symptômes neurologiques tout au long de sa vie jusqu’en 2016. À l’âge de 53 ans, l’examen clinique retrouve un syndrome tétrapyramidal avec des réflexes vifs et polycinétiques, un signe de Babinski bilatéral, sans déficit sensitif ni moteur, il a de plus une discrète dysarthrie avec une élocution hachée. Sur le plan moteur, la démarche est manifestement neurologique, talonnante dans un premier temps mais aussi associée à un steppage bilatéral ainsi qu’à une légère ataxie. Il marche sans limitation du périmètre de marche et sans aide de marche. L’examen podoscopique ne retrouve pas de désaxation majeure de l’arrière-pied en dehors d’un discret valgus de l’arrièrepied, mais surtout un empâtement bilatéral au niveau des tendons calcanéens. On remarque également une tuméfaction bilatérale des tendons d’Achille à la palpation, sans nodule ni signes inflammatoires locaux, indolore. Devant l’aspect tuméfié des tendons d’Achille et du tableau neurologique aspécifique est évoqué le diagnostic de xanthomatose cérébrotendineuse (XCT), diagnostic probable par les lésions cérébrales à l’examen IRM, l’aspect échographique et IRM des tendons d’Achille et confirmé par l’anomalie chromosomique. La XCT est une maladie rare, autosomique récessive, causée par une mutation génétique du chromosome q33-qter modifiant l’enzyme 27-sterol-hydroxylase (CYP27). Le patient était atteint de troubles neurologiques, et notamment neuro-orthopédiques non étiquetés depuis la petite enfance. La mise en évidence des tuméfactions diffuses et indolores présentées au niveau des deux tendons d’Achille a permis d’orienter vers le diagnostic de XCT et l’instauration d’un traitement palliatif et chélateur, l’acide chénodésoxycholique, visant à ralentir l’évolution de la maladie, le traitement étiologique n’étant pas disponible à ce jour.

Deficiency of CD83 in thymic epithelial cells (TECs) dramatically impairs thymic CD4 T cell selection. CD83 can exert cell-intrinsic and –extrinsic functions through discrete protein domains, but it remains unclear how CD83’s capacity to operate through these alternative functional modules relates to its crucial role in TECs. In this study, using viral reconstitution of gene function in TECs, we found that CD83’s transmembrane domain is necessary and sufficient for thymic CD4 T cell selection. Moreover, a ubiquitination-resistant MHCII variant restored CD4 T cell selection in Cd83−/− mice. Although during dendritic cell maturation CD83 is known to stabilize MHCII through opposing the ubiquitin ligase March1, regulation of March1 did not account for CD83’s TEC-intrinsic role. Instead, we provide evidence that MHCII in cortical TECs (cTECs) is targeted by March8, an E3 ligase of as yet unknown physiological substrate specificity. Ablating March8 in Cd83−/− mice restored CD4 T cell development. Our results identify CD83-mediated MHCII stabilization through antagonism of March8 as a novel functional adaptation of cTECs for T cell selection. Furthermore, these findings suggest an intriguing division of labor between March1 and March8 in controlling inducible versus constitutive MHCII expression in hematopoietic antigen-presenting cells versus TECs.

Abstract In antigen presenting cells (APC) ubiquitination regulates the trafficking of immune modulators (e.g. MHC II). MARCH1 (membrane-associated RING-CH), a newly identified ubiquitin E3 ligase expressed in APC, ubiquitinates MHC II and prevents efficient surface expression. Following LPS-induced maturation of dendritic cells (DC), MARCH1 mRNA is downregulated, permitting MHC II redistribution to the cell surface. Here, we show that MARCH1 expression is also regulated at the post-transcriptional level. In primary DC and APC cell lines, MARCH1 is degraded with a half-life of <30 min. MARCH1 degradation appears to occur mostly, if not exclusively, in lysosomes, since inhibiting lysosomal activity stabilized MARCH1 protein levels. Similar stabilization was observed when MARCH1-expressing cells were treated with cysteine protease inhibitors. Mutational analyses of MARCH1 defined discrete domains required for destabilization, proper localization, and functional interaction with substrates. Together, these data suggest that MARCH1 expression is regulated at a post-transcriptional level by trafficking to endocytic compartments where MARCH1 is proteolysed. The short half-life of MARCH1 permits very rapid changes in the levels of the protein in response to changes in the mRNA, resulting in efficient induction of MHC class II and CD86 once APC receive maturational signals. Le marché du snapshot – photographies anciennes à caractère banal, issues de pratiques privées ou professionnelles, également nommées photographies amateur, anonymes, de famille ou encore vernaculaires – s’est lentement développé en France et à Paris au cours des quarante dernières années. Le marché des collectionneurs de Saint-Mandé, dans la proximité immédiate de Paris, en est l’un des lieux clés. À partir d’une étude ethnographique de quelques stands de ce marché, et d’échanges avec plusieurs de ses acteurs et actrices, cet article se propose d’étudier les valeurs accordées aux snapshots, notamment la valeur marchande, qui dépend de multiples facteurs et de mécanismes institutionnels parfois discrets. Les snapshots apparaissent ainsi pris dans de multiples valeurs, concurrentes et complémentaires, qui s’enchevêtrent. Il s’agit ici de rendre compte des pratiques observées à Saint-Mandé, et du rôle des individus rencontrés dans l’attribution de valeurs aux snapshots.

Desigualdade de membros inferiores (DMI) está presente em cerca de 70% da população geral, podendo ser do tipo estrutural onde existe diferença no comprimento de estruturas ósseas, ou funcional, como resultado de alterações mecânicas dos membros inferiores. A desigualdade pode ainda ser classificada quanto a sua magnitude, sendo discreta, moderada, ou grave. As desigualdades discretas têm sido associadas especificamente à fratura por estresse, dor lombar e osteoartrite, e quando uma desigualdade está presente em indivíduos cuja sobrecarga mecânica é acentuada pela sua prática profissional, diária ou recreativa, estas alterações ortopédicas podem se manifestar precoce e gravemente. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar e comparar a força reação do solo (FRS) durante a marcha de corredores com e sem DMI discreta. Os resultados mostraram que os sujeitos com desigualdades de 0,5 a 2,0 cm apresentaram no membro menor maiores valores da força vertical mínima (0,57 ± 0,07 PC) em relação ao membro maior (0,56 ± 0,08 PC). Logo, sujeitos com DMI discreta adotam mecanismos compensatórios capazes de gerar sobrecarga adicional ao sistema musculoesquelético para promover uma marcha simétrica como demonstrado pelos valores do Índice de Simetria Absoluto das variáveis da FRS vertical e horizontal.

Résumé Les modèles de choix discrets ont récemment été utilisés pour étudier les marchés de produits différenciés. Le modèle estimé ici associe des demandes définies par un modèle Logit multinomial emboîté à une offre oligopolistique dispensée par des firmes multiproduits ayant un comportement non coopératif. Une application est réalisée sur le marché automobile français. Nous déterminons les caractéristiques des produits et des individus qui influencent les achats et donc les parts de marché des véhicules. Nous proposons également des éléments d'analyse des effets générés par la prime à la qualité, qui était en vigueur en France en 1994 et 1996, ainsi que des marges des producteurs.

Cette thèse explore expérimentalement et numériquement les invariants de volume et de bord dans un réseau photonique synthétique 2D soumis à des marches discrètes. Le réseau est réalisé par multiplexage temporal d'impulsions lumineuses dans deux anneaux de fibres optiques de longueurs inégales, couplés à un coupleur variable (VBS). Dans cette configuration, une dimension présente une dynamique dans l'espace réel, tandis que l'autre est gouvernée par un modulateur de phase externe (PM). En utilisant la détection hétérodyne, nous accédons aux informations spectrales et mesurons les valeurs propres et les vecteurs propres, ce qui permet d'extraire les invariants de volume tels que la courbure de Berry et le nombre de Chern associés aux bandes photoniques. De plus, nous dérivons une expression pour le nombre d'enroulement et démontrons que l'émergence des états de bord est liée à des frontières géométriques spécifiques. Enfin, nous soulignons l'impact de la topologie des bords sur la topologie globale du système, qui peut soit supprimer soit induire la présence d'états de bord
This thesis presents experimental and numerical investigations into bulk and edge invariants within a 2D synthetic photonic lattice subjected to discrete step walks. The lattice is engineered by time-multiplexing light pulses in two unequal-length optical fiber rings coupled with a variable beam splitter (VBS). In this configuration, one dimension exhibits real-space dynamics, while the other is governed by an external phase modulator (PM). Employing heterodyne detection, we access spectral information and measure eigenvalues and eigenvectors, enabling the extraction of bulk invariants such as Berry curvature and Chern number associated with the photonic bands. Furthermore, we derive an expression for the winding number and demonstrate that the emergence of edge states is tied to specific geometric boundaries. Finally, we highlight the impact of edge topology on the overall system topology, which can either suppress or induce the presence of edge states

Les marches a termes et d'options sont complementaires et efficaces parce qu'ils offrent des services specifiques et sont necessaires du fait de leur role informatif. Dans le cadre d'un modele d'equilibre partiel, qui abandonne l'approche courante par arbitrage, on montre que l'option est un actif financier non redondant. Le processus de formation des prix s'etablit grace a des agents qui eprouvent de l'aversion pour le risque et ont des anticipations rationnelles. A travers leurs transactions sur les marches financiers, les agents en couverture d'actifs parviennent a transferer aux speculateurs le risque de prix qu'ils ne sont pas prets a assumer, et a deceler toute leurs informations sur les realisateurs futures du marche au comptant a travers les prix a terme et d'options. Nous testons empiriquement le role informatif des prix a terme et d'options sur la base du marche du petrole brut
Futures and options markets are both complimentary and efficient because they offer specific services whose informative roles are necessary. In the frame work of partial equilibrium models, leaving behind a common approach of arbitrage, we can show that an option is a financial non redundant asset. The pricing process is established by agents who are frightened of risk and have rational anticipation, the hedgers through their financial transactions may transfer the risk to the speculators and may also be informed of future spot market conditions, we empirically test the informative role of futures and options prices on the basis of the crude oil market

Cette thèse étudie deux modèles de calcul: les marches quantiques (QW) et les automates cellulaires quantiques (QCA), en vue de les appliquer en simulation quantique. Ces modèles ont deux avantages stratégiques pour aborder ce problème: d'une part, ils constituent un cadre mathématique privilégié pour coder la description du système physique à simuler; d'autre part, ils correspondent à des architectures expérimentalement réalisables.Nous effectuons d'abord une analyse des QWs en tant que schéma numérique pour l'équation de Dirac, en établissant leur borne d'erreur globale et leur taux de convergence. Puis nous proposons une notion de transformée de Lorentz discrète pour les deux modèles, QW et QCA, qui admet une représentation diagrammatique s'exprimant par des règles locales et d'équivalence de circuits. Par ailleurs, nous avons caractérisé la limite continue d'une grande classe de QWs, et démontré qu'elle correspond à une classe d'équations aux dérivées partielles incluant l'équation de Dirac massive en espace-temps courbe de $(1+1)$-dimensions.Finalement, nous étudions le secteur à deux particules des automates cellulaires quantiques. Nous avons trouvé les conditions d'existence du spectre discret (interprétable comme une liaison moléculaire) pour des interactions à courte et longue portée, à travers des techniques perturbatives et d'analyse spectrale des opérateurs unitaires
This thesis is devoted to the development of two well-known models of computation for their application in quantum computer simulations. These models are the quantum walk (QW) and quantum cellular automata (QCA) models, and they constitute doubly strategic topics in this respect. First, they are privileged mathematical settings in which to encode the description of the actual physical system to be simulated. Second, they offer an experimentally viable architecture for actual physical devices performing the simulation.For QWs, we prove precise error bounds and convergence rates of the discrete scheme towards the Dirac equation, thus validating the QW as a quantum simulation scheme. Furthermore, for both models we formulate a notion of discrete Lorentz covariance, which admits a diagrammatic representation in terms of local, circuit equivalence rules. We also study the continuum limit of a wide class of QWs, and show that it leads to a class of PDEs which includes the Hamiltonian form of the massive Dirac equation in (1+1)-dimensional curved spacetime.Finally, we study the two particle sector of a QCA. We find the conditions for the existence of discrete spectrum (interpretable as molecular binding) for short-range and for long-range interactions. This is achieved using perturbation techniques of trace class operators and spectral analysis of unitary operators

Les dénommées marches quantiques, évolutions quantiques locales sur graphes discrets, sont un outil très pratique pour simuler certains systèmes physiques. Nous nous limiterons à leur version à temps discret, les marches quantiques à temps discret (MQTD). Dans certaines limites en espace-temps continu, ces marches quantiques coïncident avec des équations d’onde pour fermions relativistes, dont l’archétype et pilier est l’équation de Dirac. Dans la présente thèse, nous poursuivons l'étude des propriétés des MQTD comme possibles schémas de simulation quantique. Nous pouvons résumer nos résultats en trois parties: i) Nous introduisons un schéma MQTD permettant de simuler, dans la limite au continu, la dynamique de fermions relativistes dans une théorie de branes; ceci ouvre la possibilité d’étudier différents modèles de théories Kaluza-Klein; ii) Nous discutons l’invariance de jauge U(1), i.e., électromagnétique, des MQTD, nous comparons notre modèle aux invariances précédemment introduites dans la littérature; notre invariance de jauge présente de fortes similitudes avec celle des théories de jauge sur réseau; iii) Nous introduisons des MQTD sur grilles non-rectangulaires, plus précisément, triangulaires et hexagonales, avec toujours comme condition de retrouver l’équation de Dirac au continuum; ces modèles peuvent être étendus au moyen d’opérateurs unitaires locaux spatio-temporelle inhomogènes et n’agissant que sur l’espace interne du marcheur, afin de générer dans la limite au continu l’équation de Dirac en espace-temps courbe
There are many problems that cannot be solved using current classical computers. One manner to approach a solution of these systems is by using quantum computers. However, building a quantum computer is really challenging from the experimental side. Quantum simulators have been capable to solve some of these problems, as they are realizable experimentally. Discrete Time Quantum Walks (DTQWs) have been proved to be an useful tool to quantum simulate physical systems. In the continuous limit, a family of differential equations can be achieved, in particular, the Dirac equation can be recovered. In this thesis we study QWs as possible schemes for quantum simulation. Specifically, we can summarize our results in: i) We introduce a QW-based model in which a brane theory can be simulated in the continuum, opening the possibility to study more general theories with extra dimensions; ii) Electromagnetic gauge invariance in QWs is discussed, presenting some similarities and differences to previous models. L'étude des marches aléatoires fait apparaître des connexions entre leurs propriétés algébriques, géométriques ou encore combinatoires et leurs propriétés stochastiques. Si les marches aléatoires sur les groupes - ou sur des espaces homogènes - fournissent beaucoup d'exemples, il serait appréciable d'obtenir de tels résultats de rigidité sur des structures algébriques plus faibles telles celles de semi-groupoide ou de groupoide. Dans cette thèse il est considéré un exemple de semi-groupoide et un exemple de groupoide, tous les deux sont définis a partir de sous-graphes contraints du graphe de Cayley d'un groupe - le premier graphe est dirige alors que le second ne l'est pas. Pour ce premier exemple, on précise un résultat de Campanino et Petritis (ils ont montre que la marche aléatoire simple était transiente pour cet exemple de graphe dirigé) en déterminant la frontière de Martin associée à cette marche et établissant sa trivialité Dans le second exemple apparaissant dans ce manuscrit, on considère des pavages quasi-périodiques de l'espace euclidien obtenus à l'aide de la méthode de coupe et projection. Nous considérons la marche aléatoire simple le long des arêtes des polytopes constituant le pavage, et nous répondons a la question du type de celle-ci, c'est-à-dire nous déterminons si elle est récurrente ou transiente. Nous montrons ce résultat en établissant des inégalités isopérimétriques Cette stratégie permet d'obtenir des estimées de la vitesse de décroissance du noyau de la chaleur, ce que n'aurait pas permis l'utilisation d'un critère de type Nash-Williams.

Dans cette thèse nous nous intéressons à deux types d'approches pour la planification de pas pour robots humanoïdes : d'une part les approches discrètes où le robot n'a qu'un nombre fini de pas possibles, et d'autre part les approches où le robot se base sur des zones de faisabilité continues. Nous étudions ces problèmes à la fois du point de vue théorique et pratique. En particulier nous décrivons deux méthodes originales, cohérentes et efficaces pour la planification de pas, l'une dans le cas discret (chapitre 5) et l'autre dans le cas continu (chapitre 6). Nous validons ces méthodes en simulation ainsi qu'avec plusieurs expériences sur le robot HRP-2.

Les caméras de surveillance font depuis quelques années partie de nos paysages urbains, voire même ruraux. Ces dispositifs n’ont pourtant pas réglé l’ensemble des problèmes qui ont amené à leurs déploiements dans de nombreux espaces publics. L’une des solutions proposées afin de régler ce défaut de la vidéosurveillance consiste alors en l’ajout de logiciels de détection automatique au système existant. Ces briques supplémentaires sont de différentes sortes : comptage de personnes, détection de types de véhicule, détection de dépôts sauvages, analyse de situations anormales, reconnaissance faciale etc. Les premiers usages de ces nouvelles formes de vidéosurveillance ont eu lieu en France, bien que celles-ci ne soient pas aussi nombreuses que dans d’autres pays. Cette thèse cherche à apporter des première réflexions concernant ces nouveaux outils de surveillance et le contexte qui les entoure en les abordant par trois aspects principaux. Le premier de ces aspects concerne les développements scientifiques qui participent de la construction de ces nouvelles solutions de surveillance. Le deuxième aspect se concentre sur le débat public autour de la vidéosurveillance automatisée et la forme particulière que prend ce débat. Le troisième et dernier aspect interroge les utilisations, expérimentales pour la plupart, qui ont lieu en France, les objectifs et les conditions de ces usages. Pour le premier aspect, ce travail tend à montrer l’importance particulière des infrastructures dans la réussite de ces outils d’intelligence artificielle. Que ce soit à l’étape du développement ou bien de l’usage, l’intelligence artificielle repose en grande partie sur tous outils, tous ces matériaux mobilisés dans son fonctionnement. Données, réseaux, capteurs sont autant de tamis par lesquels le travail du logiciel passe et qui imposent des limites techniques. Pour le second aspect, la recherche a exploré la question de la présentation de ces solutions techniques, de leur promotion ou de leur critique, en tant que problème, dans les débats publics ou bien dans les espaces économiques. Il en ressort que malgré une critique diffuse dans la société les arguments économiques dominent dans les rapports officiels. Pour le troisième aspect, alors que le sujet de la surveillance automatisée ne fait pas consensus, la thèse analyse l’ensemble des stratégies et ressources mobilisées afin de construire malgré tout un marché de la vidéosurveillance automatisée
CCTVs have been part of our urban and even rural landscapes for some years now. However, they have not solved all the problems that led to their deployment in many public spaces. One solution to this problem is to add automatic detection software to the existing system. These additional components come in a variety of forms: people counting, vehicle type detection, illegal dumping detection, analysis of abnormal situations, facial recognition, etc. The first uses of these new forms of video surveillance have taken place in France, although they are not as numerous as in other countries. This thesis seeks to provide some initial thoughts on these new surveillance tools and the context surrounding them, by approaching them from three main angles. The first concerns the scientific developments involved in the construction of these new monitoring solutions. The second focuses on the public debate surrounding automated video surveillance and the particular form this debate is taking. The third and final aspect examines the uses - most of them experimental - that are taking place in France, and the objectives and conditions of these uses. For the first aspect, this work tends to show the particular importance of infrastructures in the success of these artificial intelligence tools. Whether at the development stage or in use, artificial intelligence relies heavily on all the tools and materials mobilized for its operation. Data, networks and sensors are all sieves through which the software's work passes, and which impose technical limits. As for the second aspect, the research explored the question of how these technical solutions are presented, promoted or criticized as a problem, in public debates or in economic arenas. This revealed that, despite widespread social criticism, economic arguments dominate official reports. As for the third aspect, while there is no consensus on the subject of automated surveillance, the thesis analyzes all the strategies and resources mobilized to build an automated video surveillance market in spite of everything

Malgré sa plus grande complexité, la valorisation des options exotiques suit le même principe que celui des options traditionnelles, à savoir qu'une classe très large d'approximation et de diffusion de processus en vue de la valorisation d'actifs contingents s'obtient à partir d'un même formalisme. En temps continu, lorsque l'option est européenne, les praticiens aboutissent parfois à des formules paramétriques et non paramétriques sous forme analytiques avec des hypothèses de départ différentes, le dénominateur commun à toutes ces méthodes et qu'elles supposent la positivité de la loi de densité de distribution des rendements des actifs sous-jacents, ensuite grâce aux théorèmes de changement de probabilité, la valorisation se ramène aux calculs de lois de densité au sein d'une marche aléatoire gaussienne associée à une diffusion risque neutre. Cependant, lorsque l'option est américaine, il n'existe pas de solution analytique et les praticiens utilisent souvent des techniques d'interpolations et d'approximation par des options obtenues par des convolutions le long de la frontière d'exercice optimale. En temps discret, les méthodes de valorisation avec maillage (deux ou trois points d'appui) ou sans maillage (méthode des plus proches voisins) sont fondées sur des simulations numériques formulées en termes d'équations aux dérivées partielles stochastiques ou sous forme variationnelle intégrale, nécessitant une discrétisation nodale du domaine et une génération du nuage de points recouvrant le domaine dans le sens d'une répartition de densité de points, tenant compte à la fois de la géométrie du domaine et des informations réelles liées à la nature des équations de diffusion. De ce fait, la méthode discrète semble plus générale et permet de valoriser une classe importante d'options américaines ainsi que de nombreuses options exotiques plus complexes sur un ou plusieurs actifs sous-jacents

The three basic parameters controlling electron transfer are presented: electronic interaction, structural change and interelectronic repulsion. Then electron transfer in discrete molecular systems is considered, with cases of inter- and intramolecular transfers. The semi-classical (Marcus—Hush) and quantum models are developed, and the properties of mixed valence systems are described. Double exchange in magnetic mixed valence entities is introduced. Biological electron transfer in proteins is briefly presented. The conductivity in extended molecular solids (in particular organic conductors) is tackled starting from band theory, with examples such as KCP, polyacetylene and TTF-TCNQ. It is shown that electron–phonon interaction can change the geometrical structure and alter conductivity through Peierls distortion. Another important effect occurs in narrow-band systems where the interelectronic repulsion plays a leading role, for instance in Mott insulators.

Abstract At 6.30 a.m. on 12 March 1930, M. K. Gandhi, accompanied by seventy-eight marchers, left the Sabarmati Ashram for Dandi, a coastal village in South Gujarat. He did not ever return to live in the ashram that he had created and nurtured since 1917. It is evident that the self-imposed exile applied not only to the Ashram but also increasingly to the city of Ahmedabad and Gujarat itself. In the remaining eighteen years of his life, Gandhi was to spend 301 days in Gujarat. His last visit to Ahmedabad was on 2 November 1936. His exile from Ahmedabad is reminiscent of a tap [penance]. He did not visit Gujarat after January 1942. If we understand something of this obvious turning away from Gujarat on the part of Gandhi, we might be able to capture something of the relationship that present-day Gujarat has with him. This chapter attempts in very broad strokes to capture the fraught cultural relationship that Gujarat shared with Gandhi—in his times and in ours.

Abstract In this study, discrete time models of continuous time fractional order filters are obtained by using the Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA). Marine Predators optimization algorithm is a population-based heuristic method. This method is inspired by the hunting behavior of marine predators. The algorithm works on three basic phases. These phases occur according to the difference or equality of the velocity of the prey and the predator. As it is known, uniform distribution is generally used in stochastic based optimization algorithms. However, in the MPA method, Brownian and Levy distributions are also used as well as uniform distribution. First, continuous time frequency responses of fractional order filters are generated. Then, fourth order discrete time filters are designed that can give similar responses with generated continues time filter frequency responses. Ten parameters were optimized for the design of fourth order discrete time filters numerator and denominator. The Marine Predators method’s results are compared with the results of the Fractional order Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization (FODPSO) algorithm, from which discrete time filters are obtained for two fractional order continuous time filter models. In this way, it has been shown comparatively that the Marine Predators Algorithm can be used in real engineering problems and can do filter discretization better.

In this paper, the versatility of discrete element analysis (DEM) in modeling ice-related problems is discussed and further demonstrated using the results from the DEM works conducted by the National Research Council’s Institute for Ocean Technology (NRC-IOT) using a commercial code DECICE. These works include a wide range of icestructure and ice-ship interaction problems of current interest, i.e., ice loads on conical structures, jamming of floes at bridge piers, modeling of the mechanical behavior of ice rubble, pack ice stability and associated forces on offshore structures, rubble loads exerted on an inclined retaining wall, ridge keel resistance during seabed scouring, dynamic response of a moored conical drill-ship in ice, and ship maneuvering performance in ice. Representative simulations for each case are presented including load, motion and/or interaction process, whichever is appropriate. The simulations from DECICE were compared with experimental data and found satisfactory in terms of accuracy and real-time simulation capability. The accuracy is important for design and engineering of marine structures and ships, whereas, the real-time simulation capability allows it to be used in marine simulators for personnel training and marine operation assessment. The performance of DECICE is also addressed and improved via the implementation of a new contact detection sequence and parallel considerations.

Abstract Marine cables deployed in a fluid environment possess stiffness and drag properties which show strong directional dependence. This directionality significantly impacts dynamic cable response; particularly the dynamic tension developed due to environmental disturbances. This investigation focuses on one resonant dynamic tension mechanism that derives from nonlinear fluid/cable interaction. This mechanism is successfully captured using a discrete approximation to a continuous fluid/cable model as suggested by the results of a recent numerical study. An asymptotic solution of the discrete model is derived that reveals the principal fluid/cable parameters that control this tension resonance mechanism. The fidelity of the asymptotic solutions is also assessed through comparison with numerical solutions of the discrete and continuous models.

Despite numerous efforts and a large investment by the Ecuadorian Government and the international community, fishery management in Galapagos remains highly conflictive and essentially ineffective. Levels of mistrust and lack of communication have eroded the governance mechanisms in place to resolve conflicts over competing uses in the Reserve. In an effort to provide new information and analytical content into the policy debate regarding fisheries management in the marine reserve, the authors of this paper developed this research utilizing an economic approach to regulating use of the primary commercial fisheries in Galapagos. In particular, the objective of this study is to determine the optimal harvest, escapement, and fishing effort for the small-scale fishing fleet of the Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR). In this study, the focus of attention is the two most important fisheries: the sea cucumber (pepino de mar, or "pepino") and the spiny red lobster. The authors base their analysis on a stochastic discrete time bioeconomic model developed by Reed (1979).

Cruise AL534/2 is part of a multi-disciplinary research initiative as part of the JPI Oceans project HOTMIC and sought to investigate the origin, transport and fate of plastic debris from estuaries to the oceanic garbage patches. The main focus of the cruise was on the horizontal transfer of plastic debris from major European rivers into shelf regions and on the processes that mediate this transport. Stations were originally chosen to target the outflows of major European rivers along the western Europe coast between Malaga (Spain) and Kiel (Germany), although some modifications were made in response to inclement weather. In total, 16 stations were sampled along the cruise track. The sampling scheme was similar for most stations, and included: 1) a CTD cast to collect water column salinity and temperature profiles, and discrete samples between surface and seafloor, 2) sediment sampling with Van Veen grab and mini-multi corer (mini-MUC), 3) suspended particle and plankton sampling using a towed Bongo net and vertical WP3 net, and 4) surface neusten sampling using a catamaran trawl. At a subset of stations with deep water, suspended particles were collected using in situ pumps deployed on a cable. During transit between stations, surface water samples were collected from the ship’s underway seawater supply, and during calm weather, floating litter was counted by visual survey teams. The samples and data collected on cruise AL534/2 will be used to determine the: (1) abundance of plastic debris in surface waters, as well as the composition of polymer types, originating in major European estuaries and transported through coastal waters, (2) abundance and composition of microplastics (MP) in the water column at different depths from the sea surface to the seafloor including the sediment, (3) abundance and composition of plastic debris in pelagic and benthic organisms (invertebrates), (4) abundance and identity of biofoulers (bacteria, protozoans and metazoans) on the surface of plastic debris from different water depths, (5) identification of chemical compounds (“additives”) in the plastic debris and in water samples.

The first Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRA) regional expert workshop was held in hybrid mode (in person and online) in Bogotá, Colombia from 3–7 October 2022. The goal was to identify and delineate three dimensional and discrete portions of habitat that are critical to the survival of sharks, rays, and chimaeras, and that have the potential to be managed for conservation. The region covered was the Central and South American Pacific, from the Gulf of California in Mexico to southern Chile. This scientific collaboration amongst regional and global experts resulted in the identification of 65 Important Shark and Ray Areas, 5 candidate ISRAs, and 11 Areas of Interest. Identified ISRAs range in size from small underwater areas of 1.59 km2 at depths of 1,650–1,700 m (Northern Galápagos Hydrothermal Vents ISRA) to large areas of 3,191,603 km2 (Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor ISRA) from surface waters to a depth of 1,928 m. This compendium provides an overview of all areas delineated.

Autonomous marine vehicles (AMVs) are typically deployed for long periods of time in the ocean to monitor different physical, chemical, and biological processes. Given their limited energy budgets, it makes sense to consider motion plans that leverage the dynamics of the surrounding flow field so as to minimize energy usage for these vehicles. In this paper, we present two graph search based methods to compute energy optimal paths for AMVs in two-dimensional (2-D) time-varying flows. The novelty of the proposed algorithms lies in a unique discrete graph representation of the 3-D configuration space spanned by the spatio-temporal coordinates. This enables a more efficient traversal through the search space, as opposed to a full search of the spatio-temporal configuration space. Furthermore, the proposed strategy results in solutions that are closer to the global optimal when compared to greedy searches through the spatial coordinates alone. We demonstrate the proposed algorithms by computing optimal energy paths around the Channel Islands in the Santa Barbara bay using time-varying flow field forecasts generated by the Regional Ocean Model System. We verify the accuracy of the computed paths by comparing them with paths computed via an optimal control formulation.
