Texto completo da fonteScientific applications with High Performance Computing (HPC) requirements are migrating to cloud environments due to the facilities that it offers. Cloud computing plays a major role considering the compute power that it provides, avoiding the cost of physical cluster maintenance. With features like elasticity and pay-per-use, it helps to reduce the researchers procurement risk. Most of HPC applications are implemented using Message Passing Interface (MPI), which is a key component in common and distributed computing tasks. However, for this kind of applications on cloud environments, the major drawback is the lost of execution performance, due to the virtualized network that affects the communications latency and bandwidth. To use a cloud environment with scientific applications of this kind, low latency communication mechanisms are required. The network topology detail is not available for users in virtualized environments, making difficult to use the existing optimizations based on network topology information done in bare-metal cluster environments. In some cases, cloud providers can migrate virtual machines, which impacts the efficiency of routing optimizations and placement algorithms. Moreover, if resource isolation is not guaranteed, resource sharing can lead to variable bandwidth and unstable performance. In this thesis a Dynamic MPI Communication Balance and Management (DMCBM) is presented, to overcome the communication challenge of HPC applications in cloud. DMCBM is implemented as a middle-ware between the users application and the execution environment. It improves message communication latency times in cloudbased systems, and helps users to detect mapping and parallel implementation issues. Our solution dynamically rebalances communication flows at higher levels of the virtualized HPC stack, e.g. over MPI communications layer, to dynamically remove communication hot-spots and congestion in the underlying layers. DMCBM abstracts the communications state between application processes based on latency measurements. This middleware characterizes the underlying network topology and analyzes parallel applications behavior in the cloud. This allows for detecting network congestion and optimizing communications by either selecting alternative communication paths between processes, or leveraging live migration of virtual machines in cloud environments. These options are analyzed in real-time and selected according to the type of congestion (link or destination). DMCBM achieves lower application execution time in case of congestion, obtaining better performance in clouds. Finally, experiments that verify the functionality and improvements of DMCBM with MPI Applications in public and private clouds are presented. The experiments where done by measuring execution and communication times. NAS Parallel Benchmarks and a real application of dynamic particles simulation NBody are used, obtaining an improvement of up to 10% in the execution time and a communication time reduction of about 40% in congestion scenarios.

It is based on an empirical survey of knowledge management practitioners in the private, public and NGO sectors in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The major findings of this study are (1) that many knowledge management practitioners have not received any formal training in knowledge management, (2) that for most of them their practices are not informed by explicit knowledge management policies, (3) that there is no culture of sharing knowledge established within particular organisations, and finally (4) that knowledge managers are not using e-learning facilities to keep their knowledge of knowledge management current.

Texto completo da fonteThis mini dissertation reports on the findings from a study on Chief Executive Officers of dually listed companies which, measures the value they place on Corporate Communication professionals. Using the Hill and Knowlton quantitative framework, the study explicates the role Corporate Communication professionals play within the organisational context and identifies their strategic legitimacy. Much of the literature on the topic of strategic Corporate Communication asserts that this function is drastically marginalised and its value disputed within the inner circle of organisations. The literature states that Corporate Communication managers and strategists are expected to validate their presence within the top levels of management in organisations. CEOs of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and at least one other international stock exchange were surveyed. Findings include evidence of inconsistency and confusion on the part of CEOs, with regard to the understanding of Corporate Communication as a discipline and business function, as well as its location within the organisational structure. Further study is recommended to investigate the determinants of value within Corporate Communication for CEOs, to bridge the current strategic and knowledge gap.

In the past few years there hás been considerable debate over the question of mobility management in móbile cellular communication networks, due to the need of using the signaling system resources in a careful way. Among the strategies of location management, the utilization of registration areas has been difunded since the emergence of the second generation mobile communication systems, allowing to reduce the resource consumption due to location updates. Another concept, named paging areas, has also been extensively employed, allowing to save resources utilized localization of mobile terminals during the call setup for mobile stations. Initially, the Location Area Partitioning Problem (LAPP) is treated as a graph partitioning problem, largely recognized as NP-complete ([GARE 79], [LENG 90]) and leading to the utilization of heuristics, able to produce good sub-optimal solutions. The heuristics are proposed to solve the more usual case, where location areas are coincident with paging areas, and the frequency spectrum (radio resources). With the same methodology, another problem, named Inter- Switch Handover Minimization Problem (ISHMP), is adequately solved, being its relevance due to the elevated system resource consumption and to the severe delays imposed to users when their Mobile Switching Centers are changed. Thus, the diminution of the occurrence of such events id advantageous from both the user`s and the system`s points of view. The heuristics are eddentially the same for the two problems, and it is shown the superiority of the quality of the quality of the obtained solutions, when comparing them with other published results. The work also presents discussion about mobility models employed in the study of problems and techniques in the mobile communications area. Among such models, the fluid flow and the gravitational models are highlighted. A study concerning to the signaling load imposed to the fixed network (including queries and location update traffic over databases) and to the air interface is presented. Finally, starting from the average rate of mobile terminated calls and from a previously defined user impatience threshold, a new proposal for the definition of the optimal number of cells per paging area is presented.

New contexts of distributed computing emphasize the need of programming abstractions able to deal with asynchronous communication and concurrent tasks. Event-driven or threaded programming models are able to deal with these issues, but each model presents particular advantages and problems. Normally, when choosing the model more appropriate for a context or problem, the programmer must deal directly with the difficulties related to this model, making the development task more complex. In this work we discuss a way to combine the advantages of the traditional programming models in order to support a programming interface more suitable for the programmer. We explore asynchronous communication and cooperative task management based on the co-routine construction. By using these concepts, we implement: (1) a set of operations for building client/server applications upon an asynchronous communication basis; and (2) a more appropriate programming interface for TinyOS, the state of the art of operating system for sensor networks.

Texto completo da fonteGiven the current scenario of constant organizational changes, many authors have been dedicated to study and research in project management, aiming to contribute to the process of changes implemented through projects. Based on the assumption that communication is the arena in which people and the organization itself can create meaning (WEICK, 1995), this dissertation aims to understand how communication is perceived by individuals and how it affects the processes of creation of sense when these individuals participate in a process of organizational change brought about by an implementation project of an ERP - Enterprise Resource Planning. A field survey was carried out by taking an ERP implementation project as a case study. The communication of the project was analyzed first from a positivist perspective, and later a counterpoint was made, in which the present work has deepened, with an interpretative perspective, using the theoretical model proposed by the Montreal School. The results of the research evidenced the importance of the role of communication as constitutive of the project and of the organization itself (TAYLOR and CASALI, 2010).

Texto completo da fonteThe traditional way of increasing capacity in a wirelesscommunication system has been cell splitting and fixedchannel-allocation based on prediction tools. However, theplanning complexity increases rapidly with the number of cellsand the method is not suitable for the large temporal andspatial traffic variations expected in the future. A lot ofresearch has therefore been performed regarding adaptivechannel allocation, where a channel can be used anywhere aslong as the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is acceptable. Acommon opinion is that these solutions must be decentralizedsince a centralized one would be overly complex.
In this thesis, we study the locally centralizedbunch conceptfor radio resource management (RRM) in aManhattan environment and show that it can give a very highcapacity both for outdoor users and for indoor users covered byoutdoor base stations. We show how measurement limitations anderrors affect the performance and wepropose methods to handlethese problems, e.g. averaging of measured values, robustchannel selection algorithms, and increased SIR margins. Wealso study the computational and signaling complexities andshow that they can be reduced by splitting large bunches, usingsparse matrix calculations, and by using a simplified admissionalgorithm. However, a reduction of the complexity often means areduction of the system capacity.
The measurements needed for RRM can also be used to find amobile terminal's geographical position. We propose and studysome simple yet accurate methods for this purpose. We alsostudy if position information can enhance RRM as is oftensuggested in the literature. In the studied scenario, thisinformation seems to be of limited use. One possible use is toestimate the mobile user's speed, to assist handover decisions.Another use is to find the location of user hotspots in anarea, which is beneficial for system planning.
Our results show that the bunch concept is a promisingcandidate for radio resource management in future wirelesssystems. We believe that the complexity is manageable and themain price we have to pay for high capacity is frequentreallocation of connections.

Texto completo da fonteOver the last decade, the most widespread approaches for traditional management were based on the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) or Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP). However, they both have several problems in terms of scalability, due to their centralization characteristics. Although the distributed management approaches exhibit better performance in terms of scalability, they still underperform regarding communication costs, autonomy, extensibility, exibility, robustness, and cooperation between network nodes. The cooperation between network nodes normally requires excessive overheads for synchronization and dissemination of management information in the network. For emerging dynamic and large-scale networking environments, as envisioned in Next Generation Networks (NGNs), exponential growth in the number of network devices and mobile communications and application demands is expected. Thus, a high degree of management automation is an important requirement, along with new mechanisms that promote it optimally and e ciently, taking into account the need for high cooperation between the nodes. Current approaches for self and autonomic management allow the network administrator to manage large areas, performing fast reaction and e ciently facing unexpected problems. The management functionalities should be delegated to a self-organized plane operating within the network, that decrease the network complexity and the control information ow, as opposed to centralized or external servers. This Thesis aims to propose and develop a communication framework for distributed network management which integrates a set of mechanisms for initial communication, exchange of management information, network (re) organization and data dissemination, attempting to meet the autonomic and distributed management requirements posed by NGNs. The mechanisms are lightweight and portable, and they can operate in di erent hardware architectures and include all the requirements to maintain the basis for an e cient communication between nodes in order to ensure autonomic network management. Moreover, those mechanisms were explored in diverse network conditions and events, such as device and link errors, di erent tra c/network loads and requirements. The results obtained through simulation and real experimentation show that the proposed mechanisms provide a lower convergence time, smaller overhead impact in the network, faster dissemination of management information, increase stability and quality of the nodes associations, and enable the support for e cient data information delivery in comparison to the base mechanisms analyzed. Finally, all mechanisms for communication between nodes proposed in this Thesis, that support and distribute the management information and network control functionalities, were devised and developed to operate in completely decentralized scenarios.

Texto completo da fonteThis research study examined the general business problem that ineffective communications caused project management outcomes that lead to increased business costs. The specific business problem was complexity experienced by virtual teams, due to the lack of physicality, contributed to environmental barriers and ineffective communications. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to capture the lived experiences of project leaders who managed the complexity associated with virtual communication environmental barriers. The research question was: What are the lived experiences and informed perceptions of project leaders who managed the complexity associated with virtual communication environmental barriers? The conceptual framework guiding this inquiry was comprised of complexity theory’s complex adaptive systems framework to include project leadership, team dynamics, virtual communication environments, communication method selection, and the management organization as the integrating components that influenced complexity. Data was gathered through telephone interviews conducted with 14 certified project management professionals sourced from LinkedIn, all of whom experienced project complexity and communication challenges within the virtual environment. The resulting data transcripts were analyzed using NVivo 11. The research question was answered through the findings that revealed a central theme and sub-themes of managing complexity due to virtual environments and communication barriers. The research findings indicated sub-themes of five virtual environments experienced by the research participants, created by the type of communication tools’ attributes that were experienced. The virtual environments were established from the types of communication links by using specific tools, and not defined as the physical environments based on locations of the senders and receivers. Secondly, the research findings indicated sub-themes of internal environmental barriers that were created inside of the project teams by people, language, culture, training, and leadership. Thirdly, the research findings indicated sub-themes of external environmental barriers that were created outside of the project teams by executive leadership, organizational structure, and customer relationship. Fourth, the research findings indicated sub-themes of task and project outcomes included project failure, project success, and project recovery. The results of this study contributed to the business practice through the findings that indicated how the participants managed communication environments through implementing processes, leadership escalations, communication tool selection, reduced feedback delays of communication, and built relationships among the team members that were central to managing the complexity in virtual teams. In addition, this study contributed to research by providing a holistic description of the virtual environments, identification of communication environmental barriers, and consolidated understandings from other studies.

Texto completo da fonteChange management and communication have been studied by researchers in the past. In this case the researcher identified the need to investigate specific factors influencing the successful communication of change at a workplace. The organisation used in this study recently experienced a range of changes and was the perfect case for the study. The paper deals with the communication of change to employees of different (1) age groups, (2) levels of education, and (3) positions in the organisation. The planning for this study was presented in a research proposal to the higher degrees committee (HDC) of Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). The researcher reviewed literature from previous studies and defined key concepts to be used in this study. The revised literature of previous studies, applicable to this study, can be found in Chapter 3 of this thesis. The researcher used the mixed method research design for the study. Data was collected through qualitative and quantitative research methods, using a questionnaire and interviews as data collection tools. The data collected with the questionnaire was analysed by use of the statistical package for social science (SPSS) to generate descriptive results. The data collected during the interviews was analysed qualitatively. The research findings indicate that the organisational change communication strategy does not provide for differentiation between age groups, varying education levels or positions in the organisation. The division, in which the research was performed, has its own internal ways of dealing with the differences in education levels and positions. Recommendations and suggestions are presented in Chapter 7. It is intended that this research will contribute to academic knowledge in the fields of change management and change communication fields. Further studies on this phenomenon will be required as the organisational environments are ever-changing.

Texto completo da fonteThe fundamental activities of a business can be summarized as being a cycle of strategy development and implementation, operations design and management and finally performance measurement, which feeds back into strategy design. This research aims to determine whether visual management can assist the quality motive by adding value to the above‐mentioned business activities for start‐up businesses and strategic business units within the South African context. The main topics to be addressed are performance management and visual management (VM). Performance management entails investigating the concept of strategy, its formulation and eventual implementation; performance measurement; improvement initiatives and greater quality theory. Visual management will be introduced as an angle on corporate communication and the importance of sharing information indiscriminately throughout the organisation. Both empirical and non-‐empirical research methods are used to answer the question of the impact of VM on business activities. The first involves a theoretical synthesis from the literature, the second was based on interviews with professionals from the relevant industries, the third is content analysis of the above.
